Another Michel Tremblay Musical: Le Chante de Sainte Carmen de la Main

Following the success of Belles-Soeurs, the musical adapted from Michel Tremblay’s iconic play Les Belles Soeurs, another Tremblay musical is on the way: Le Chante de Ste. Carmen de la Main.

Created by the same team that launched Belle-Soeurs (director René Richard Cyr and composer Daniel Bélanger) Le Chante de Sainte Carmen de la Main will be presented next spring (April 30 to May 25, 2013) as the final production of Théâtre du Nouveau Monde’s 2012-2013 season.

Maude Guérin will play the title role of the Quebec Country and Western singer, Carmen, who returns from Nashville with dreams of writing her own songs. (In some ways, this Tremblay play is actually better suited to being adapted into the musical theatre format than Les Belles Soeurs was.)

In the original production of the play Sainte Carmen de la Main directed by André Brassard, in 1976, Michelle Rossingol played Carmen and Lorraine Pintal, now artistic director of Théâtre du Nouveau Monde, was a member of the chorus, along with playwright René Daniel Dubois (Being at Home with Claude, Ne blâmez jamais les Bédouins).

Le Chante de Sainte Carmen de la Main will be a coproduction involving Théâtre du Nouveau Monde, Spectra musique, Les Francofolies de Montréal, and B14 Productions.
