What a month it has been! Since the last post, there has been many things happening and all in line

What a month it has been! Since the last post, there has been many things happening and all in line with Food, Fitness, Fotos and Fun!! I have pretty much wrapped up this years wedding season with only a few albums to complete. My last wedding was at the historic Camelot in my local town of Camden, where channel 7s new series A Place Called Home is filmed. My personal Photography, has amounted to some work with film on my Diana camera, which I will share once developed and a new app I have fallen in love with ” pinhole”. The easter long weekend saw Lily and I down at the beach and me obsessively taking photos with this new app! Playing with the double exposure was cool, as you have no idea where it is going to put each image really, here are some of the results.

Sticking with the Diet

I wont lie that it has been tough. The last post was when I first started this calorie counting and my single white female obsession with Michelle Bridges. Those first few weeks they were tough. But there is a reason why these programs that have you counting and watching what you eat are successful. Because they work. I have in the past been a member of weight watchers, becoming a life time member, during this time I learnt a lot about food. This time however I have gone a little further in reading labels and looking at what is in the products I am eating. Within the first week, I felt like my stomach was less bloated. The second week I took measurements and there was 1cm off the waist and 1kg lost on the scales. Now, a month on I have lost 5cm off my waist and the flat stomach I have been so desperately wanting is finally coming along. So what have I been eating??? Plenty! I love my dinners and I am enjoying raspberries ( they are costing me a fortune) Kangaroo is a new dinner time fav, and I am still able to keep Miss Lily happy with the occasional Pasta meal. During easter is when I could tell my body was loving all the healthy eating as two days off the wagon and eating rich food, desserts and chocolate topped off with wine, sent me into agony come night time!! My stomach just wasnt coping with the quantity of food and the heaviness of my rich cooking. What I have loved with all of the Michelle Bridges recipes is they are mostly very quick after getting home from my gym classes I am able to whip it up quickly. Heres a look at some of the months meals. As you can see they look amazing, and they are tasty and most importantly KID FRIENDLY. Eating like this I will admit takes a little forward planning, but the results speak for themselves, 5cm off the waist, feeling healthier and having energy to get through my days at work then at the gym.

My Month in Fitness and Learning to RECOVER

Recovery. Its become my most hated word. What has become hard for me now is learning the balance of all of my three incomes and trying to have a life within it all aswell. What has become lost along the way is my own fitness regime and love of working out with my Bestie, Sara. Today for the first time in months we trained together, although we had a lot of catching up to do, we work well together. I also hit the gym with my old PT Bri for a workout this week. Many people ask why I would want to be working out more. Apart from instructing I have always held the belief that we need to stay fit outside of what we instruct. Before becoming an instructor I had my own fitness goals and things I wanted to achieve within the gym. Now that the diet is under control, I need to revisit my goals and approach my fitness accordingly. Which means also learning to juggle my 8 classes a week! After a mammoth recovery session with Anh this week, he basically communicated throughout the intense massage – RECOVERY is important if I want to continue with my training. So, the purchase of a new foam roller ( which I have labelled the torture roller ) and continuing my Chiro appointments and regular saunas whilst watching the weight selection I use in classes. We all need some time to recover those muscles after a mammoth workout AND have a good stretch.

I finally completed Body Pump Aim1 this month, throughout having an awful fever and unable to give it my all I was able to take in the material given to us on the day to make us better instructors. It was days like this that makes me so proud to be part of Les Mills. 14 other instructors lead by our mentor Jako, spent the day presenting and recieving feedback on selected tracks. And the biggest thing, learning to take who we are as instructors to the next level. I met some wonderful people at this training who were motivating and whom I learnt a lot off also. A little professional development goes a long way, and whilst I am loving every minute of it, Ill continue to read, learn and attend modules to see where it can all go. Knowledge is power after all. This weekend, our absolute idols are coming from NZ to coach and instruct at FILEX. I simply cant wait for it.

So my message to you all this post. Stay Motivated. Stay Educated. And RECOVER. There are so many magazines at the moment out supporting healthy living and how to be mindful of what you are doing throughout the day. Be mindful of your body and learn to respect it, its the only one you get, and we want it to be here for a long time. Within your recovery time close your eyes and focus on the goals you want to achieve and set forth into reaching them with a positive outlook, as being positive about what you want to achieve and what you are doing will make the results more achievable. Believe in yourself!!!

This was my afternoon with Lily on the beach before a photoshoot. We simply sat ( in the wind ) and just enjoyed the moment together, with nothing to do but relax.

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! For many of us, this means a day off from work and school. Technic

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! For many of us, this means a day off from work and school. Technically we’re not even back at school yet, but I’ll take it!

I got back to Ithaca on Saturday afternoon, and got pretty lucky with a mild and sunny day for moving. I had SO much stuff to bring back! After a break I always come back with about twice as much stuff as I brought home in the first place — especially since Christmas I’ve accumulated so much more stuff! So I have spent the last two days or so unpacking, de-Christmas-decorating (boo!), and cleaning the house. It needed a good scrubbing so I took one for the team! I do feel better now that all that is mostly done! I can’t relax until I feel settled, so I’ve literally been running around non-stop for the last two days. I feel like a dog scratching at its bed before it can get comfy!

Today I went to Target and the grocery store. I am now officially all stocked up on healthy food! It should hold me over for a while. I do usually have to go back at least once a week though for things like produce, milk, and yogurt that go pretty quickly.

Tonight my friend Sophie and I are trying a new exercise class at the gym — Body Pump! I’ve heard a lot of good things about it, so I decided to commit to going twice a week this semester! I hope I like it, because I already built the gym time into my schedule! I’m a little nervous because the class is on a first-come-first-serve basis, so you have to get there early to sign up. We plan on going a full half hour early! Then maybe get a little cardio in before the class begins. I’ll be sure to update on how I liked the class!

On Friday I completed Ripped in 30! I don’t think my body necessarily looks much different, but I can definitely feel a difference, specifically in my waist/stomach (problem area!). I feel good and of course very accomplished. I hope I can keep that momentum going now that I’m back at school. Between Body Pump and Friday afternoon spin class, I’ll definitely be keeping busy. Unfortunately I find it pretty difficult to do workout videos in my house since I have 3 roommates. It’s not that they would care, I just don’t necessarily like being looked at/judged. Also, our walls/floors are paper thin so the jumping around and everything would probably cause tremors, haha.

One video that I like doing in my room is Jillian’s “Yoga Meltdown” since it’s low impact. I did that this morning but found myself a little distracted picking hairs and fuzz out of my carpeting. Gross!

Gotta get ready for the class- wish me luck!

Everyone remembers my friend Lil, right? Well, she is back! That’s right, double duty I told

Everyone remembers my friend Lil, right? Well, she is back! That’s right, double duty

I told you she was a gym crazy, right? This girl SERIOUSLY puts my workout schedules to shame. Personally, I’m a big fan of working out on my own and namely at home. The hassle of getting my butt to the gym, when all it wants to do is stay at home after work is a personal hurdle of mine. Although I will say that I love my gym and always leave a class feeling great afterwards. Lil, is the opposite as you’ll soon find out. Even though I TRIED to get her to share some pictures of all the different moves she does for the classes, she declined (next time), but she DID agree to talk about the crazy gym schedule she’s worked herself into. Check it out.

Ok so another entry. This one will be about my working out on my own versus the classes at the gym. When the first treadmill my husband bought for me died from inactivity, he bought another one. Why? I didn’t want another treadmill. He wanted the treadmill. This purchase was before we joined the gym and I wanted an elliptical. OK, so we ended up with an elliptical AND a treadmill. They both are in my laundry room. I worked out on my elliptical for a while, listening to my iPOD, but feeling isolated. My family was in the living room watching tv while I was in my laundry room staring at the spot where the two walls meet. Not fun at all.

Now as a member of Gold’s Gym, I have the option of working out on my own or attending classes. It is such a difference. My gym has a theater where they play different movies every day. That is where I usually run on the treadmill, in the dark, listening to my iPOD and watching movie subtitles. That is not my first option. My first choice is the classes. My absolute favorite class is Les Mills Body Attack. Body Attack is a high intensity cardio class. I started with Body Attack and it is still my favorite. Body Attack is a 60 minute class with tons ‘o jumping jacks, squats, lunges, and pushups. Your body definitely knows you mean business in that class. All that work to “get ‘cha into those booty shorts” as the instructor, Jen, says. Ha, yeah, booty shorts, that’s my goal. (Said in a sarcastic tone) It is nice keeping up with all the young people in class. What is even nicer is seeing that I can outlast the young people. Who knew?

I also take Body Pump and Body Step. Body Pump is weight lifting while isolating different muscle groups. It has given me awesome muscles and I have gotten several compliments on how good I look. A woman asked me after Pump one day a few months ago if I did any additional workouts outside of classes. She wanted to know how I got my arms to look like they do. Until that point, I hadn’t realized that my arms had taken shape. Sadly, I will have to miss one of my Pump classes this week but it is all good. I know my muscles can use a rest every now and then.

I also take Body Step, which is a step aerobics workout. That class always gets me huffin’ and puffin’. I have never been much of a dancer and some of step is like dancing. It has taken me a few years to step out of my shell and be open to the idea of even swinging my hips in front of a mirror in the first row of class. I do sashay and swing my arms, heck, sometimes I even sing. I hardly think anyone would call my style “dancing” but it is all for the workout. I am directionally challenged, turning left when the rest of the class is turning right, and I usually end up laughing about my mis-steps. Once you realize that everyone misses a step or gets a move wrong, you are no longer self conscious about being off. An important thing to remember is to be sure the step does not move as you are jumping on and around it. Once, the class was doing a move that involved a stutter step, which is a step on the step followed by a step on the floor with the same leg, while hopping on the weight baring leg. Yeah, it happened, the step got away from me and I slid across the floor on my butt as if I were sliding into third base. The funny thing is that everyone around me noticed but the instructor didn’t. It makes for a funny story.

My gym recently started offering Body Combat on a regular basis. I will check that one out next week. I love attending the gym classes more than working out on my own. I have a group of friends in those classes who keep me on track. It is so much easier to go to the classes when you know your friends will be there. It holds you accountable and you want to attend the classes. The friends who come may not always be the same friends but I always know there will be someone I know at class. I plan my evenings around what class is offered on which night. I have been called a “gym rat”. Not necessarily a bad thing, right? At 45, I am in the best shape of my life. It is never too late to start working out.

See? I told ya she was ca-ra-zy. And for the record, I’ve seen those arms – they’re pretty stellar. She’s kept the booty shorts under raps though…

xo

I hope every one had a great holiday weekend this past weekend, whether it was Passover or Easter We had a great time hosting my parents and little brother for a few days and enjoyed a homecooked (by yours truly!) Easter dinner and some fantastic baseball seats! I spent the better part of Saturday in the kitchen and while I made a whole bunch of food to be proud of (ham?!), this little beaut was probably my most favorite part of the night (although hummus platter is a close second)

On the menu?

Homemade Hummus with Homemade crackers (!!) and veggies (not, homemade), ham, cranberry apple lentil loaf for the veggie (me), some side dishes and a vegan carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. That EVERYONE liked. I love when Vegan meals can surprise people. I also love that 3/4 of our food was homemade by me. Saved some serious bucks and cooking makes me happy.

After a night of food, we spent Sunday at the ballpark – I couldn’t have been happier! Check it out!

After a weekend of fun, it felt really good to get back into training this morning! Today started my training for the Baltimore 10 miler in June. And like the rest of my Hal Higdon schedules, I opted to keep my Mondays as my strength and stretch day. Even though I had a rough night of sleep, I’m really glad I made it to my Body Pump class. It was a great set of tracks and I upped my weights for most of them. I felt strong and toned all day – and there is NO better way to start the week

Does anyone else love starting off the week with a morning workout? Or do you prefer to sleep in and ease back into the routine??

How was your weekend?!? (Go O’s!)

Why is it so hard to diet? What is it about food we can’t resist. It’s fuel for our body, so why do we have such a ‘love hate’ relationship with it?
I started my diet pretty well and lost five pounds. I have been doing great in the evenings, eating healthier, smaller portions. Then tonight I bought some French bread!!!! I brought it home with the intention of having one small piece, with a little cheese. It was soooo good. The second piece was larger than the first. Yes, I succumbed and ate way too much. Now I feel fat and guilty. It was just one slip up. One set back.I haven’t given up. Tomorrow is another day!

On a more successful note, I got plenty of exercise snowboarding on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday I walked three miles during my lunch hour, enjoying the lovely Spring sunshine. On Tuesday evening I attended a ‘Turbo Kickboxing’ class. On Wednesday I went to a Les Mills ‘body pump class’

Today, had a crazy day at work so no walk. We all know what I did tonight.

I will continue my diet tomorrow and hopefully have a better day. I would love to lose another fifteen pounds. I can do it.

Am I crazy thatI didn’t want to sleep in today? Sloth-like behavior is something that I can sometime

Am I crazy thatI didn’t want to sleep in today?

Sloth-like behavior is something that I can sometimes support, but at the same time I also love those Saturdays when you accomplish more before the crack of noon than you could ever imagine.

It is also great when you mentally tell yourself that you would like to do something active, but no big deal if the plan changes since you didn’t say it out loud. This too occurred today. I had secretly noted that it would be great to hit the 8AM Body Works class at the Orange Active 24 Hour Fitness or do a hike at Peter’s Canyon. This secret notion just means that I could have been easily thwarted by a good cuddle. It wasn’t a cuddle that changed my mind; my husband suggested that we hit the streets for a run. Let’s be honest, a jog or a neighborhood jaunt.

I strapped on my IPOD and started to link my Nike+ program when we discovered it was drizzling enough to soak us to the bone before the end of a 2 mile jog. Genius that I am, I suggested the gym giving me 20 minutes to make it to my Body Works class. Secret triumph.

But this goes deeper. I have been meaning to resurrect my fitness healthy blog – Fit Streak. I have also had an idea bouncing around my head for months that I thought I would start today.

I plan on reviewing fitness classes. This is my devious plan to ensure incorporate of lots of workouts. I love a good class. There is something about having another person lead me through 1 hour of sometimes hell that kills me and inspires me every time. It won’t stop me from watching the clock entirely, but it does make me feel fantastic after I have given it my all and completed that pesky hour. It also breaks the monotony and will often be fun.

I have a 24 Hour Fitness and LA Fitness membership (crazy I know) so I can easily share with you my reviews of local classes from those gyms throughout Southern California and maybe sometimes when I travel. We will see about that. I have also been known to attend other work out venues in search of the holy grail of motivation and optimum health. (See my old posts about a boot camp class I took in Anaheim – Boot Camp Post 1 & Boot Camp Post 2) I will bestow each class with a numerical rating: 1 representing not worth the sweat and 5 marking excellence in my humble opinion. I am also open to recommendations on classes/venues I should review next. Let me know by leaving a comment of sending me an email.

Let’s jump to it.

CLASS: Les Mills BODY PUMP

INSTRUCTOR: Mary Ellen

DAY: Saturday

Time: 8AM

Location: 24 Hour Fitness, Orange Active, 3521 East Chapman Ave. Orange, CA

Rating: 5

Lucky for me, I have taken this class before and I have loved it every time. I would go so far as guarantee a great workout filled with lots of sweat, swelling muscles and overall confidence building. If you like strength training, this is the place for you to be. The class uses bar bell and free weights. Step equipment doubles as a bench and mat work is involved. It is a total body workout. Plan to be sore if you don’t typically use weights in your normal workouts. The routine switches between big muscles and small muscle groups ending in abdominal work.

Here’s an example of what I experienced today:

5-10 minute warm-up with a bar bell filled with light weight. This includes shoulder rolls, dead lifts, and squats.

From the warm-up, we moved right into major leg work getting a little more intimate with squats (load on the weight appropriate for you and balance it all on your back just under your neck). We did basic squats, wider plié squats, back to basic squats, sink deeper into that seat squats, pumping squats and more. Your legs are wobbling and your butt is getting less giggly. It is worth the intense focus.

Flip from squat work into chest work lightening the weight load accordingly. Leading with a basic bench press on the step bench, we careen our way through weighted chest variations on our way straight to the next muscle groups – triceps, biceps, shoulders, back, more legs; you name, we hit it.

I won’t give it all away, but I will tell you again it is worth it.

It isn’t just the workout routine that makes it great. The instructor, Mary Ellen is very motivating from what she says to encourage you along to seeing her cute little body demonstrate moves. That can be inspiration enough as you dream of sculpting your own body to that of hers.

Women dominated class attendance, but not by much. There were more than a handful of gentlemen firing up their muscles in the class as well.

The class can get crowded so get there early, but no need to get up at the crack of dawn to secure your spot.

I love this class and hope that Mary Ellen continues to teach it. She sticks around and teaches the 9AM Cardio Mix. I haven’t taken this, but maybe I will stick around one of these days.

A solid 5 for sure, and I will look forward to you joining me.

Okay, you have to take out a few elements here to see why I’m addicted to Body Pump, like the way-to

Okay, you have to take out a few elements here to see why I’m addicted to Body Pump, like the way-too-motivated, too-loud-yelling instructor; and her toned legs and short shorts; and whatever platform she’s standing on in front of some car repair shop; and while you’re at it take out the pine trees and the whole outdoor scene. And no one in my class yells like someone at a tea party.

But this is my favorite track, as they call it (there are back and chest and shoulder and lunge and bicep and tricep and abs tracks, all set to very loud cool music). The clean and press shown here is my favorite move, and for some reason I could listen to this particular music track all day.

It’s difficult to let a day go by without talking about healthcare reform, but never fear: there’s a woman in my class who is such a fanatic about health care she makes Howard Hughes look germy. There’s a little dispenser on the wall of the gym filled with those supposedly anti-bacterial wipes, and before class starts, and even after class starts because it takes her so long, she proceeds to wipe down every single piece of her equipment: the bar, each of the six round weights, her dumbbells and body bar, her mat, and her entire step.

May she and the bottoms of her shoes be forever protected.

Now that I’m working at the YMCA, I need to present myself to other people and attend meeting and look…well, professional. That means no more workout clothes to work! I think I have quite a base at home, but needed some new additions. I think I did very well with what I have shopped for this weekend. Here is what I have acquired:

1 pair dressier khaki capris with belt

1 pair of white capris with belt

1 black skirt with belt

short sleeved grey jacket

1 pair of brown casual/dress shoes

1 pair of white/grey snakeskin dress shoes

1 pink tank top

1 yellow henley short sleeved

1 white cardigan

1 hot pink/white scarf with fringe

1 light blue short sleeved belted top

1 purple/black plaid tie belted top

1 green blouse top

Grand total: $217

Not bad in my book, and I’m stylin’ with the best of them. AND I got $20 in Kohls cash to use next week!

Still learning my way around here, not that I did not know, but there are so many ways to get to so many places and its grown so much. But I’m loving being here and loving my job, just missing Joey. Time seems to go fast with all the projects I’m doing and have already done.

This past weekend we did a Les Mills Body Pump launch at our YMCA and had two launch classes that had full sign ups and full attendance. Its an awesome choreographed workout to weights and great music. We are starting these classes tomorrow at our location and all the others in the Greater San Antonio area as well. I just have to keep things interesting and make people want to join our gym as well as help our community. I’m doing a Pilates Reformer demo this saturday to try to bring more members into the pilates room and make a profit off of those beds. We will see how well that goes too.

Time to read my book and relax for the night. I hope to get to update once during the week. If not, next weekend.

This 12 week challenge is absolutely flying by. We turned our books to the last page today, which symbolizes there’s only one month to go. How unreal.

Today, as every Monday was weigh-in day and due to it being the end of another month of the challenge, it was also measurement day. I knew I had pushed myself hard this week at the Gym, and bringing back up my visits to what the previous weeks were (Going twice a day on a couple of occasions). As well as my Personal Training session on Tuesday, I had partaken in Body Pump on Wednesday and also BodyJam & Body Balance back to back on the Saturday. Plus my own cardio and weight sessions on the other days.

This week I lost 1.4kg. Which after last weeks gain of .3, is really 1.1kg. Still, a girls gotta be happy with those results. My measurements were taken and this months results are:

Bust: 99cm (-1)

Waist: 78cm (-4)

Hips: 99cm (-2)

Upper thigh: 63cm (-2)

Lower Thigh: 58cm (-3)

Arms: 30.5cm (-1)

Total CMS lost for Month Two: 13

Total KGS lost for Month Two: 3.5kg

TOTAL CMS LOST FOR TWO MONTHS: 40.5cm! (15.94 inches)

TOTAL KGS LOST FOR TWO MONTHS: 9.9kg (21.8 pounds)
