“Chacun cherche son chat” avait son lot de jolis moments, “Un air de famille” était tristement hilarant, “Le péril jeune” avait le mérite de mettre sur le devant de la scène une impressionnante brochette d’acteurs voués à réaliser de belles carrières par la suite, “Peut-être” est trop sous estimé mais, sans aucun doute, “Les poupées russes” est le chef d’oeuvre de Klapish.

Cette scène est terrible.

Oui? Then you’d love Les Poupées Russes (The Russian Dolls). After hunkering down with a good glass of wine (or three) last night to watch it we both exclaimed that it was one of our favorite foreign films.

It’s the sequel to L’Auberge Espagnole and all of the characters come back for a final hoorah! I won’t go into any of the details, just that we really enjoyed watching them both.

Wendy - You are the perfect guy.
Xavier - You’re making a mistake… I’m really not! If there is someone on earth who is a wreck, it’s me.
Wendy - That’s what I just said: you’re a perfect guy.
Xavier - How come you’re such a nice girl?
Wendy - I’m not being nice… you just happen to be the best thing that’s happened to me in the past 26 years.
Xavier - I’m not sure I’m the one you’re talking about. The one you think I am.
Wendy - What do you think? I know you’re not always perfect. I know you have tons of problems, defects, imperfections… but who doesn’t? It’s just that I prefer your problems. I’m in love with your imperfections. Your imperfections are just great! I mean, you can’t imagine, before I had to deal with Ed and compared to him, you’re a day at the beach! I know most girls they go weak at the knees for what’s beautiful, you know, that’s all they see, that’s all they want. But I’m not like that. I don’t just see what’s beautiful. I fall for the other stuff. I love what’s not perfect. It’s just how I am.

L'auberge Espagnole

There are two other movies I’d like to have added to my list as a 2-for-1 deal.  I’m not actually sure what initially compelled me to buy L’auberge Espagnole, but it probably had something to do with Romain Duris or Audrey “Amelie” Tautou.  Audrey is actually rarely in it, which made the film much more intriguing as it followed Duris’s character–a French grad student in econ–from Paris to Barcelona (before the big B became caliente) to study what he thinks will land him the vie en rose.  Of course, it turns out to be la douleur exquise, but before that there’s the French guy living with a Dane, an Italian, a German, a Spaniard, a Belgian, and a Brit.  Outside of the literal title (they do, as it happens, live in a Spanish Apartment), an auberge Epsagnole in French is an idiom for a sort of potluck.

It’s only appropriate, then, that the international title for an international movie get re-written for the various audiences–Una Casa des Locos (“Madhouse”) in Spanish, Euro Pudding in the UK, The Spanish Apartment in the US…

More than a metaphor about life as a 20-something searching through the foreign-ness of growing up (and all the trappings that come with it), Cedric Klapisch’s film was also a metaphor for the newly-formed European Union.  A continent with some nations only 20 years old (in their current incarnation) figuring out their new identities.  One of my favorite exchanges is between the fabulous Cecile de France and an unnamed Catalan student in which Cecile says: “It’s contradictory to defend Catalan at the very moment we’re creating a European Union,” and the student replies: “I don’t agree. First of all, because we’re dicussing identity. There’s not one single valid identity, but many varied and perfectly compatible identities. It’s a question of respect. For example, I have at least two identities: my Gambian identity, which I carry internally, and my Catalan identity. It’s not contradictory to combine identities.”

In the sequel (which I almost bought on DVD in Paris because I couldn’t wait for its US release), Les poupees Russes, we see everyone 5 years later.  Roman Duris ditched economics to follow his true calling as a writer and still keeps in touch with some of his Barcelona buddies.  They also bring Eastern Europe into the mix with the brother (William) of the original movie’s Brit (Wendy) marrying a St. Petersburg ballerina, which is really where my motor got running.

I love Russia.

It was the first country I went to outside of the US and I fell.  Hard.  Watching parts of this movie is like looking at pictures of an old boyfriend and remembering how you couldn’t keep your hands off one another in restaurants, movies, and cafes.  But apart from that, I love the music.  With a soundtrack primarily backed by Kraked Unit, there’s a blend of musical cultures similar to the blend of every character’s culture in the film.  It’s such a basic medium, and one that could easily be overlooked in a film, but the impact is striking (try watching some of the scenes without the music).  There’s not only the combination of cultures–Mediterranean, Slavic–but the meld of genres–folk, gypsy, pop, classical, house.  If we can have a union of wildly different countries connected by a continent, why not the same with music?

Les poupees Russes

There’s something about the way we travel that can translate into the way we listen to music.  Before I heard the LpR soundtrack, I wouldn’t qualify myself as a house music fan.  But as I write this I’m listening to Kraked’s “La ballade de Neus.”  Before I went to Russia, I never thought I’d be pining for Soviet-holdover grocery stores and Stalinist apartment buildings.   In Auberge, William was a prick and an ass, making Nazi jokes, talking bad French, and grating on everyone in the apartment.  A trip that someone else takes to London makes him reevaluate himself to the point where he learns Russian and tracks her down in St. Pete’s.

Maybe selling classical music as a destination, an experience, rather than a product (an archane one at that) is what we really need.  “When I first met William, I thought he was an idiot,” says Auberge character Tobias in LpR.  “Because I am German, he thought I am kinda Nazi.  A lot of people think like that.  But today, Germany has changed.  Russia has changed.  And William has changed as well.  People can change.”

If shifts in social consciousness are possible, are shifts–or better yet, expansions–in musical consciousness so far off?

“C’est quoi ce bordel avec l’amour ? Comment ça se fait qu’on devient dingue ? T’imagines le temps que tu passes à te prendre la tête dessus ? Quand t’es seul, tu te plains, est-ce que je vais trouver quelqu’un ? Quand t’as trouvé quelqu’un, est-ce que c’est la bonne ? Est-ce que je l’aime vraiment et est-ce qu’elle m’aime autant que moi je l’aime ? Est-ce qu’on peut aimer plusieurs personnes dans sa vie ? Pourquoi on se sépare ? Est-ce qu’on peut réparer les choses quand on sent que ça part en couille ? Toutes ces questions à la con qu’on se pose tout le temps…”

Lucky You : Film sur le poker. A réserver aux passionnés de ce jeu de carte… et encore. On passe un bon moment mais sans plus, jusqu’à arriver à la pathétique et tant attendue table finale. Pas de all-in pour ce film !

Les poupées russes : Suite directe de l’énorme Auberge Espagnole, celui-ci déçoit d’entrée avec une méthode des plus basiques : on prend les mêmes et on recommence. Sauf que là, tout le monde a sa petite vie et c’est plus dur de se retrouver. Bref, oubliez les poupées russes.

A la croisée des mondes : Déception pour ce film avec de beaux décors mais au scénario “trop” basique avec une Nicole Kidman en demi-teinte dans son rôle de méchante voleuse d’enfants. Il se finit sur un cliffangher (assez moisi) nous obligeant à attendre la suite… 

Deux soeurs pour un roi : Grosse déception encore. L’ayant maté juste pour voir la magnifique Scarlett Johansson (non, pas Nathalie Portman), on tourne en rond dans ce film basé sur des coups de p*** entre les deux soeurs. Bref, une chamaillerie moderne mais avec des conséquences plus lourdes au Moyen-Âge.

Lions et agneaux : Le film se découpe en 3 parties se déroulant en temps réel. 1°) Dans le bureau d’un sénateur, une journaliste apprend un scoop sur une attaque surprise en Afghanistan. Elle devra choisir entre son article (son job, son revenu) ou sa conscience personnelle. 2°) Dans un bureau d’enseignant, un élève de sciences-po a une discussion sur son avenir avec son professeur. 3°) Sur le front, 2 soldats se préparent à attaquer l’Afghanistan.

3 scènes pour un sujet qui se coupe et recoupe, un enjeu politique et stratégique et la vision encore une fois, que la vie humaine n’est rien quand elle est manipulée par les a-priori ou les décisions supérieures.

Le film n’est pas transcendantal mais la fin, basique dans les faits, montre bien que nous ne sommes rien que du vent.

De battre mon coeur s’est arrêté : Je savais que ce film avait été récompensé et lorsque je l’ai lancé je me suis dit que j’allais passer un bon moment… Et bah, il faut l’avouer, je me suis ennuyé. L’histoire d’un garçon qui reprend la piano (arrêté après la mort de sa mère) et qui retrouve un sens à sa vie…

Ce soir je dors chez toi : On passe un bon moment avec ce film et on rigole un peu. L’histoire d’un type qui n’ose pas dire à sa copine qu’il a peur d’emménager avec elle. Trouvant excuse sur excuse pour que chacun garde son appart’. Elle découvre le pot aux roses et elle décide de se venger (tout en s’amusant).

Il fut un temps où cette tirade, somptueusement prescrite par le talentueux et authentique Romain Duris dans Les Poupées Russes, me parlait furieusement. Et de toutes les manières, ce temps reviendra, réminiscence d’une époque jamais révolue, sournoisement cyclique.
