French singer Michel Sardou was born on January 26, 1947. He left school at 16 to work at his father’s cabaret, which is kind of ironic since I use his 1978 hit “En Chantant” to teach the present participle to 16 year olds. He has released over 40 albums, 12 of which have gone to number 1 in France. The most popular of his songs include “La Maladie d’amour” (Love Sickness) and “Les Lacs du Connemara” (The Lakes of Connemara”). He won a Victoire de la Musique in 1987 for “Musulmanes”, in 1990 for record attendance at a concert, and in 1991 as New Male Performer of the Year. He’s also very interested in acting, on stage, the small screen, and movies. In fact, he co-owned a small theatre in Paris for several years. His involvement with political and social causes is no act, however.

Today’s expression, monter au créneau (montay oh craynoh) literally means “to go up on the crenellations” of a fortress. It means to get personally involved in a fight, to put oneself in the line of fire, like Sardou did with his 1968 song “Les Ricains” (Ricains is a dated French short form for Américains). At a time when anti-American sentiment was running high in France due to Vietnam, Sardou went way out on a limb with a song in support of them, reminding everyone of their sacrifices on the Normandy beaches. Charles de Gaulle recommended that the song not be played on the air. The major boost to his career from the controversy was admittedly a nice side benefit. There’s no such thing as bad publicity.

Et ça commence fort avec, une fois n’est pas coutume, une occasion de se foutre de la gueule de nos amis américains. Car à la suite d’un très sérieux sondage fait par l’agence Gallup/Harris, on apprend que 37% des américains sont infoutus de localiser l’Amérique sur une mappemonde ! Lorsqu’on leur montre une carte des U.S.A. un certain nombre de sondés suggèrent que ce pays mystérieux pourrait bien être “Hollywood,” “Palestine,” “The Shire,” ou le “Club Med Punta Cana.” !!! Mais bon, cela ne semble traumatiser personne. Shirley Matheson, une employée à temps partiel résidente dans l’Ohio déclare même “Je vis aux U.S.A, alors pourquoi aurais je besoin de savoir où cela se trouve !”. Argument implacable vous en conviendrait… Autre argument implacable, celui de Michael Chertoff secrétaire au département de la Sécurité Intérieure qui fait remarquer de façon très sérieuse que : “Personally, I believe if fewer people in this world could spot America on a map, we’d have a much better chance of avoiding national tragedies like 9/11. You can’t attack a country you can’t find.”…

Tellement fort qu’ils ont même organisé la journée du “Global Orgasm“. D’ailleurs, je présente mes excuses à toutes et tous pour vous prévenir de cet évènement en retard… C’était en effet le 21 décembre où la Terre entière devait s’envoyer en l’air au même moment “to effect positive change in the energy field of the Earth through input of the largest possible instantaneous surge of human biological, mental and spiritual energy.” La paix dans le monde est peut être à ce prix… Mais à condition d’y aller mollo aussi, car un peut trop de fougue peut entraîner de graves lésions auditives comme le prouve la mésaventure de cette pauvre chinoise qui s’est retrouvée en partie sourde suite à un baiser (trop) passionné…
