The sun is still being temperamental and refuses to come out which is a bit annoying as I’m trying to show my brother & sister-in-law our beautiful island. Instead it just looks gray and damp!

We will make the most of it though but I can’t help but think that today is a good day for sitting in front of the TV or computer and having a mooch around.

I never really watched any TV when I was younger, partly because I was too busy playing sport, and partly because our parents limited our TV watching to 30 minutes per day as well as censoring the shows we were allowed to watch. The list pretty much consisted of sesame street and play school and banned any soaps.

I remember when I was 18 and one of the girls at school was in Neighbours. I came home and wanted to watch one episode just so I could see her. Every 5 mins dad was saying ‘has she been on yet? turn it off!’. I just remember thinking that if he was worried that at that age I was going to be corrupted by watching one episode I was in trouble!

I have to admit to owning most episodes of Xena, and the increasingly obvious subtext between her and Gabrielle is brilliant. Lucy Lawless is hilarious which is due in part, I suspect, to the fact that she is New Zealand and they are generally pretty good fun.

The only soaps I watch these days are clips that contain lesbian couples and these are predominantly in European countries. They all have a massive fan base and wonderful people have taken the time to translate the relevant clips so you can follow their stories without having to resort to learning Spanish or German.

I have become addicted to trawling the internet trying to find present and past couples so I can follow their storyline. I was devastated when Tina & Bette split up on the L word, especially as a friend had told us that we reminded her of them! A few of the many other couples I have followed over the past couple of years include the Spanish Pepa & Sylvia in Los Hombres de Paco, Bianca & Marissa in the American All my children which is about to wind up this month, and before that Reece & Bianca.

The German show Verbotene Liebe has featured a number of gay and lesbian storylines which is to be expected with a title that means ‘forbidden love’. The very lovely Carla was with Hannah who died, Susanne and later Stella whom she married before they both left the show.

Another Spanish show, Hospital Central featured the gorgeous Maca & Esther who have had a very long storyline over a number of years. The young but very well acted Hand auf Herz follows the lives and loves of Jenny & Emma but has unfortunately finished this week. It has been compared to a German version of Glee which has Santana & Brittany as its lesbian couple.

A number of web series are made in America which are made by lesbians for lesbians. A few of these are the popular Anyone but me
http://anyonebutmeseries.com
, 3Way,
girl/girl scene

I suppose it is inevitable that these storylines meet an end sooner or later which is to be expected in a soap opera. The characters live on in the abundance of fan fiction that people write about their continued stories and lives. My newest obsession is PC games with lesbian characters & storylines. I have played Dragon Age but now need to stop for a while so I can get some work done! When I have a bit more time on my hands I will play the next one as well as Mass Effect which I have sitting waiting for me.
