The gap between the years 2000 and 2010 seems like a good time for me to write about my favourite al

The gap between the years 2000 and 2010 seems like a good time for me to write about my favourite albums of the decade. These also happen to be the years that I went from the angst ridden age of 16 to the slightly (emphasis on slightly) maturer age of 26. It also provides me with a great opportunity to show you that my taste in music is probably not the same as yours (and obviously not as good), and that my list isn’t eclectic in the slightest.

I have fallen in love with hundreds of albums in the past ten years so to name only ten of them is an extremely difficult task. However, I’ve done it and if you’d like a rough idea of my top artists over the last few years, you can take a gander at my last.fm page.

The following list includes ten albums that for me, have either; strongly influenced me in different ways, remain nostalgic and still spark brilliant memories of growing up or simply, still remain extremely enjoyable for me to listen to from start to finish. In fact, these are the factors that helped make my final decision a hell of a lot easier. Oh and don’t expect any of these albums to appear in any other list of ‘Great albums from the last decade’. It just wouldn’t happen…

So let’s get on with it. (Beware – I WILL go over the top when I write about my number 1)

#10. Fenix TX – Lechuza

The number ‘10′ spot was the hardest spot for me to fill, and if I’m honest I’m still not sure what should have truly gone here. This album was released whilst I was in the sixth form and it was usually on repeat during my I.T lessons via my trusty mini-disc player. The eleven tracks on Lechuza have a bit of everything, from angst to emotional with some humour and fun to boot. I guess this albums lasting power could have been due to the fact, the band split up a couple of years afterwards, but I honestly still get enjoyment from it and am now itching to see these guys live once more. I’m pretty certain that the inclusion of ‘Lechuza’ in this list will surprise almost everyone, but I feel it rightly deserves its place in my personal top ten.

#9. Less Than Jake – Borders & Boundaries

So here’s the token ska-punk inclusion in my list. I have to admit I have gone off ska in general an awful lot over the past couple of years but Less Than Jake will always be welcome in my collection with open arms. Borders and Boundaries is another album that spent A LOT of time making friends with that trusty mini-disc player of mine. It’s an album that worked for me all year round and it provided so much fun it’s unreal. It mainly reminds me of bus journeys and walks to work, so technically it shouldn’t be great based on the memories, but the fact is, those bus journeys and walks to work were really great thanks to my favourite Less Than Jake album. Admittedly it doesn’t get played as much these days, but I think I’ve unfairly abandoned it. So 22 tracks of ska-punk fun help to earn Borders and Boundaries the #9 spot.

#8. Coheed & Cambria – In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3

Ok, this is getting a bit harder now. I have the next 8 albums decided upon, but I’m putting them into order as I go. I was slightly late getting into Coheed & Cambria, and probably discovered this album about a six months after its release in 2004. This album is probably one of the few in my top ten that took a while to grow on me, but once it did I’d discovered a new favourite band. At the time of writing this the band have four albums and this remains my favourite by a substantial way. It also introduced me to a new genre of music that I hadn’t really given the time of day prior to discovering number eight in my top ten. Prog-Rock, punk rock, pop and t’riffz all in one near perfect album. That’ll slot it nicely into my list. Thanks Coheed.

#7. Saves The Day – Stay What You Are

So number seven in my list brings me to a band that I’ve never really loved quite as much since the release of this album in 2001. This album is mainly in my list for the memories it conjures up as a ‘just discovered alcohol’ eighteen year old ‘yoof’. I can recall many drunken nights where me and my good friend Greg would recite the dark lyrics off of this album whilst wandering the well known streets of my home town slightly inebriated. ‘Stay What You Are’ is truly host to many anthems of ‘the best years of my life’ and to this day I continue to enjoy them just as much as I did eight years ago. I keep worrying that this album shouldn’t be here, but the more I think about it, the more I realise it still brings a huge smile to my face on every listen. Yeah it’ll definitely remain in my list at number seven.

#6. Jimmy Eat World – Jimmy Eat World (Bleed American)

Jimmy Eat World are easily one of my top three favourite bands from the last decade. Every album I own by them could have probably been here if I’m honest. The reason I picked this one however, was because 1) It’s the first one I owned (and consequently fell in love with) and 2) It easily owns the nostalgia factor over any of the others. The catchy pop rock from start to finish on this album is as fresh to me now as it was the first time I heard it. I’m starting to realise there is a theme of anthems helping these albums into my top ten list, but that’s what it’s all abut for me. The anthems that moulded me into who I am today and were with me through both good times and bad. A little cheesy? Maybe! But I’m not writing the popular classic albums of the last decade list am I now.

#5. Brand New – Deja Entendu

You know, if I had written this list two years earlier, I’m certain that this album would have been a bit higher up the list. In fact it would easily have been number one at one stage in my life. Don’t get me wrong, I still adore it but I just can’t love it as much as I once did. If listening to an album on repeat too many times could break your CD Player then this album would have done just that. Brilliantly written songs, that you can’t necessarily relate to, but they were so good you didn’t need to. I don’t really know why I’m talking in past tense because to this day they still are really good and that’s why it made it into my top five. If you knew me five years ago, the chances are you heard me harping on about how this was the best album since your favourite album of all time. Unfortunately, not many people agreed.

#4. New Found Glory – New Found Glory

I’ve sort of surprised myself here, because I didn’t really expect New Found Glory to rank so highly in the list. I’m unashamedly a huge fan of pop-punk, a genre my peers will say I should have grown out of when I hit the 21 mark, but… I haven’t. This is an album I discovered shortly after Blink182’s album ‘Enema of The State’ (which was painfully released before 2000) and included some of the biggest ‘tunes’ for an eighteen year old who was on the verge of becoming a punk rocker. All the songs on this album are also about girls, and for an eighteen year old me, it was easy to relate to. I can still put this album on and sing along to every single word. My neighbours probably think I’m singing my heart out to busted, but little do they know it’s actually my fourth best album from the last decade. An album that earns it’s place easily. An album that I’ll always have on my ipod.

#3. Alexisonfire – Watch Out

It would appear that most of my list isn’t really the last decade at all. It’s mainly albums from around 2000-2004 and this is no exception. Although it was probably around 2005/6 I actually discovered it. This album for me can do no wrong. I love it from start to finish. Obviously I have my favourite tracks on ‘Watch Out’ but I love every single track on this album. This is probably the heaviest album on my list, but it does have a bit of everything. I’d be prepared to bet this is one of my ‘most listened to’ albums in my life and actually contains a couple of songs that would certainly be on my top ten songs of the decade list. Well written lyrics, well written music and some of the best vocals you’ll ever hear (Dallas Green *ahem*) and I have myself an album that I have no hesitation to put in my top three of this decade.

#2. Frank Turner – Sleep Is For The Week

Anyone that knows me probably saw this coming. Frank Turner has quickly become my favourite song writer of the last decade. I literally could have put any of his albums in this spot, because I love them all but I chose this one for a couple of reasons. I can relate to the lyrics a bit too much to describe my life over the last ten years. This sort of makes it perfect for this list too. Also whenever I see Frank live, I always get an amazing feeling when he plays anything from ‘Sleep Is For The Week’. More-so than any other material. This album helped shoot Frank Turner to the top of my played artists list on my last.fm account, and as a recent discovery that’s pretty good going. I could sing my praises for this album and Frank Turner for another 2000 words, but I guess I’ll spare you the boredom. Just know this was always going to be in the #2 spot.

#1. The Movielife – This Time Next Year

I’m laughing to myself as I fill in the spot for my number one album of the decade. I can hear 90% of the people reading this article going ‘Who?’. Some of you are probably even a little baffled or disappointed. Just hear me out. This album – this band were always going to be here. If you asked me in the year 2000 to state my favourite album I would have said this one. Ask me now? You get the same answer. This album single-handedly defines the last decade of my life. It’s at least played a couple of times a month and has been for the last ten years. It’s the album that made me want to start a band. It even played a hand it me purchasing my first guitar (although Green Day and Blink182 also deserve some credit for that). I very rarely get excited about seeing a band live for the first time, as I did when I first saw The Movielife live. It’s influenced me in so many ways, and even probably convinced me I was punk rock back in the day. Unfortunately the band split a few years after this album was released and I was absolutely gutted. However, last year I got to see a sort of re-union and it was the best gig of my life. This album sits above any other album I own. Its not musically genius, it’s not ground breaking and you probably won’t like it, but to me it’s everything. To me it’s my number one album of the last decade.

So there you go. If you’ve made it this far I congratulate you. If you’ve skimmed it, then I don’t blame you, but you might need to read it to understand why my list is so shocking. If you think my list is crap then I probably think the same about yours. That’s why it’s my list. Oh and I’d also like to list some albums below that could just have easily been in this list. Now I’m finished I’m even a bit confused as to why some of them weren’t.

Found at nataliedee.com The debate of 4th wave is upon us! There are more theories out there than I

Found at nataliedee.com

The debate of 4th wave is upon us! There are more theories out there than I can count on one hand, but I’ll probably touch on the most commonly believed ones.

Some believe that 4th wave is already here, while others say that it isn’t here/it never will be (because it was never truly mainstream). With the latter, many try to “guess” what 4th wave will sound like, pretty much by just combining another genre with ska that we haven’t witnessed yet. For example, in a Zune forum, this topic is discussed rap-ska, folk-ska, electro-ska and emo-ska, which is contradictory since emo is most ska fans’ most hated music. Whether these are just joke genres or serious ones, it’s something to think about since ska has gone punk too.

Or, on a slightly different track, will 4th wave simply be a ska band from another country, adding their cultural differences to influence the genre? This is what some ponder, especially since ska has popped up in a few countries where it wasn’t popular before, such as Japan with Oreskaband.

Going along the same lines of other countries making something new with ska, one of the beliefs that ska is already here is because “salska” genre. Emerging from Puerto Rico and Latin America, salska uses ska and combines the genre with Latin pop-rock sound. This song by La Ruda Salska, has really fast vocals and a somewhat-punk sound.

Christian ska, which has been seen for a while but never got much recognition, has gotten bigger lately as well. Bands like Five Iron Frenzy and the O.C. Supertones claim that they’re Christian Ska. Will it become more mainstream?

There’s also freestyle ska from Europe, but this was introduced two decades ago. It never caught on in the United States, so could songs like this, by Messer Banzani, catch on here?

Finally, there are some that argue that this is fourth wave. Notice that the song is aggressive like punk, but still very different; I can’t exactly put my finger on what I would call it. That song, by Streetlight Manifesto, is starting to be seen in new music by older bands, such as LTJ, TTMT, and Chase Long Beach, who were once classified as ska-punk. Many believe that SM started 4th wave, especially since they have a song from an earlier album called “Riding the Fourth Wave” and also every song on SM’s latest album, Somewhere in the Between, sounds just like “Would You Be Impressed,” the song from above. Other bands with similar sounds only have a handful of songs like this and released them after the release of SM’s album.

I love this theory because this is my favorite type of ska– however, many believe that this beat is simple ska-core. At the same time, genres are a bit misunderstood by many, because even though I labeled Voodoo Glow Skulls in a past post as simple a ska-punk band, some sites online will call them ska-core.

That’s really all I have for right now. Whatever happens, I hope it’s good.

I would like to believe that the more aggressive-type of ska is/will become fourth wave, but that may be just wishful thinking. It’s different than past ska, but it may not be different enough; salska and freestyle ska may just be the answer.

And now, this title’s post comes from Streetlight Manifesto’s Everything Went Numb. I had such a big selection of applicable songs to choose from for this post, but I chose this one because I probably couldn’t use this title for another ska-related post.

So. Sorry it’s been a while since my last post. More will come soon.

Anyway, this post will be dedicated to ska news.

To start with the saddest news, Streetlight Manifesto will not be on tour for a while and instead will be hitting the recording studio. This may not sound like a big deal, but oh, it is. They’ve been on the road nonstop for the past five years. Their last album (which is a completely different type of ska than third-wave; I’ll talk about it in a later post) is one of my favorites of all time, so I guess I shouldn’t complain too much if they’re going to record something new. I guess I also shouldn’t be complaining too much since SM was here twice this year, but they’re absolutely mindblowing live. I believe they’re the only band I’ve seen live four times.

Less Than Jake is still on the road since the beginning of the summer for Warped, but on a new tour. This time will definitely be different than the prior tours, however, since they’re not only having one, but TWO j-rock bands, one of them being j-skaaa.

J-ska. Oreskaband.

I’ve been told that their name literally translates into “We are a ska band,” but I can’t seem to fact-check it online. Regardless, they can still rock a tuba. Oreskaband consists of six members, and they sing mostly in Japanese. The last time they toured in the States was for Warped ‘08, and they were so cute and FOB-y. I didn’t get to see them play (I had been there since none, and their stage time on Hurley was 7:45. I had intended to stay alive to see them perform, but I got extremely dehydrated due to too much alcohol and too little food. I left around 4 or 5, it was an extremely short Warped for me), but I met them at their signing and got them to sign some stuff. I am so psyched for J-Rock night with LTJ, one of the most funniest bands to see live.

Oh yeah, and the Casualties will be co-headlining with LTJ. There’s your small dose of punk. All of these crazies will be at the Masq Nov. 13, doors at 6:30-ish.

The Ska is Dead Tour (which is an awesome site for ska news, too) is in effective! And it’s coming to the Masq Nov. 21, engulfing two stages (the Masq’s website only says the Hell stage, but I’m going to assume it’s on Purgatory as well). Fifteen bucks to see: The Toasters, Mustard Plug, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Deal’s Gone Bad, The Independents, Taj Motel Trio, Fatter than Albert, Dead Like Lincoln, and 50:50 Shot. My top choices of the tour? TTMT, Mustard Plug, and the Toasters. I haven’t seen the Toasters yet, but they’ve been alive since ‘81, not to mention they still have a cult following, so that’s pretty impressive. Mustard Plug isn’t bad, but TTMT is awesome live. Albeit, the only time I saw them was on a lonely 4th of July for an article (it was at Swayze’s, and because of the holiday+location, no one would make the drive to Marietta. However, it was sweet because it was literally my own private show alongside my boyfriend. Not to mention they gave me free stuff.) Doors open at 6:30…ish. It’s always going to be “ish” with the Masq, but in my opinion they have the best ground for all of that skanking.

Other ska news: The somewhat-ska band Bomb the Music Industry will be at a few places in Atlanta from the 29th to Nov. 3rd. Chase Long Beach, a third-wave ska band with a female frontwoman, will be at Swayze’s on the 6th. They’ve actually kinda been exploding on the scene, even though I’m not a particular fan of theirs (lately I’ve been a bigger fan of the newer ska which doesn’t even have an official name yet, but I’ll get into detail about that later).

That’s it for now, I’ll keep you guys posted. But before I go, here’s a video to the post’s title. It’s a song from Less Than Jake’s Borders & Boundaries (it’s gonna be ritual), where the original page can be found here.

Oooh this is a hot one! First up in this weeks auditory mind assault is a full album download of down and dirty, psytrance from Xamanist…

Xamanist is 31 year old Sérgio Ribeiro from Portugal and he’s been messin’ about on guitar and bass and tweakin’ synths since diaper days. Then came what the man himself describes as a “life changing moment” - Boom Festival 2000 – and the next thing ya’ know Sergio is creating his own psytrance compositions. Together with Syul, the twosome formed Swan X-1, who performed live across Portugal until disbanding in 2007. Sérgio wasn’t quite done yet though, and hence, his solo project, Xamanist, was born. But, and I love this part, Xamanist still performs live on guitar and synths, at every show. This is not your average bot-a-track electronica. Rather, Xamanist is like all good scotch, wine, coffee and smoothies an exercise in the perfection of the blend. Xaminist is old and new, darkness and light, melody and rhythm. This fusion philosophy is breathtakingly executed on Sérgio’s debut album, Initiation, mastered by Akhentek @ Ilum Studios. Sure, it’s laced with that good ‘ol Goa, but its also an amalgamation forged in the fires of a full-on, progressive style that provides an epic backdrop for creative storytelling. Personal favorite has gotta be the banging “White Magick”, but hey, I loved this whole album and it gets better with every listen. Oh and I almost forgot yo, that psychedelic cover art is from the delightfully curious mind of Adam Scott Miller – another interesting cat to say the least.

The Jam-Tex selector has been working on a study and organization of the essential tracks of reggae music called “The World of Reggae Music Collection.” The selector invites others to comment on the selected tracks and to join in on the conversation about the history of reggae music. This collection of singles began with the greatest roots reggae hits in categories entitled: “Reggae’s Superstars: The Lions of Jah”and “Reggae’s Superstars: The Lion Youth.”

Now the selector moves back in time to the roots of reggae, exploring the greatest singles from the ska tradition. Please feel free to suggest your favorite singles. The examination of the ska genre included a focused study on the founders of ska music from the late 1950s to the 1960s called: “The Ska Originals.” The next post explored the “Two-Tone Ska” movement of the 1970s and 1980s often called the second wave of ska music. This post focuses on “Third Wave Ska” music that fused ska and elements of punk.

In the 1990s the revival of ska music, known as the third wave, came in a raw form with strong ties to the punk rock music scene. It’s no surprise since ska music comes with a fast-paced rollicking energy that appealed to young working-class youths. British and American punks ate up reggae and ska, and the sound fused well with rip-roaring punk rock. My favorites from this genre include Operation Ivy, Fishbone, Rancid, and Sublime. Brad Nowell of Sublime had a knack for making great third-wave ska punk rock.

The Aggrolites have mad a distinct impression on the third-wave ska movement, bringing their California soul-drenched sound to the mix. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are symbolic of this genre, laying grimy vocals over ska horns and rock guitars. Some of the great punk bands have made their own ska-infused tracks, including NOFX, Goldfinger, the Offspring, and even the hardcore punk group Propagandhi.

Propagandhi’s track “Ska Sucks” is really a critique of the ska revival. As a representative of the punk intelligentsia, Propagandhi questions everyone and everything, including authority, religion, and the quality of the ska revival. The song makes a captivating argument why the ska revival “sucks,” singing the message over a wonderful third wave ska sound.

Disclaimer: This here is my half ass attempt to describe the Warped Tour experience. It was not my goal to be objective. I’m a biased reviewer right now, I only featured the bands I saw and liked. With some commentary

Guitarist Chris #2 flipping off the auto industry and the crowd

Amidst the remnants of what was once the gold mine of the World War II era steel and weapons mill, four punks dressed in black and wielding guitars shouted obscenities at the three guilty parties responsible for the ongoing disorder of the town. Their names were Ford, General Motors and Chrysler. They flipped them off. The crowd cheered on, fists pumped up in the air. The band was called Anti-Flag, and the mohawks and sweaty concert goers were part of the fifteenth edition of Warped Tour.

This is how Warped Tour started for me. Obviously, the bailout was the protest du jour. As I have said before, everything in this city is a cry for protest, the rest of us outsiders are only there to support it. So went Anti-Flag’s set. Singing their usual hits from Underground Network, A New Kind of Army, Terror State and For Blood or Empire, the band riled up the crowd into a massive circle pit that swallowed a big chunk of the parking lot in which the show took place. Sweaty punks (using the term freely) surfed the crowd and sang about what makes the United States of America suck and what the people need to do to fix it. It’s 1 in the afternoon, the sun beating down our necks, the mosh pit bleeding to the sides and angry cheer pumping through our veins: we sang “Death of a Nation”. Our corporate sponsors, including Kia, AT&T and venue owner Comerica Bank puked all over their shoes.

After that fire bomb, it was Less than Jake’s turn to rock the crowd. It didn’t take much to keep what Anti-Flag got going. Roger Manganelli (bass) and Chris Demakes (guitar) led the band into “Johnny Quest thinks we’re sellouts” and “Sugar in your Gas Tank” and we all went crazy moshing and skanking as if our lives depended on it. Actually, they did, because if you didn’t dance somebody was gonna knock you senseless with their flying fists and elbows. Every set on Warped Tour lasts about half an hour, and this one was well spent. Crowd surfers put their butts on our faces or just plain simple fell on top of us, but that’s part of the deal right? It’s where it’s at. They finished their set with their usual announcement type goodbye. We looked for water.

Chris Demakes and bassist for Less than Jake

Bouncing Souls’ turn was up. They always bring their A-game so it’s a no-brainer to write that their set was the shit. Twenty years and still up and running. A nothing beats like singing “True Believers” live: it makes you live one more time. It makes you feel like you’re part of this big family and everybody in the crowd is your brother and sister. It sounds extremely corny, but guess what…it’s the truth. It makes me sad that they all looked a little bit older than last year…but so is life. (More on that later).

Bouncing Souls' lead singer rocking the crowd

Returning to some fucked up ska punk, Big D and the Kids Table skanked away thirty minutes of pure ska punk, singing about the end of the world, drunk girls and dudes and what not. It was fucking great. Streetlight Manifesto proved how ska can make a wicked comeback (although I’m not even sure it ever went away, never mind the detractors). I didn’t know much about them, but “What a wicked gang we are below” was the shit. As my cousin would say: “Horn’s rock!”. They do indeed.

Big D and the Kids Table at the Hurley.com stage

Now, for the grand finale: Bad Religion. What can I say…nothing. Because if I did, I would ruin that experience for everyone else. They said they were getting too old for touring, I say bullshit. Stick it out for one more year. And after thirty, their songs are as relevant as ever. “21st century digital boy”, “Atheist Peace”, “Broken”, “The Hand Shake”…need I say more? Greg Graffin is getting old, but it doesn’t matter. To them I say: The world still needs Bad Religion. And so does Warped Tour.

Bad Religion at the Vans Main Stage

Last year I kind of suggested to myself that I was too old for this shit. We’re not. It’s just that the bands are getting younger and not better. Now, I’m not that old (I’m almost 22), but having 14 year old girls complaining about Bad Religion because they want to see 3OH3! is fucking terrible. I’m not one to judge, but this is when Warped stops being a punk tour and surrenders their ass to MTV style politics and their favorite corporate sponsors. There were two groups of die hards: the punk kids and the hardcore kids. The rest were too many teeny boppers. I know, I’m getting old. But so is Warped Tour and it’s time they grew their balls back. Even if it means losing some sales (although, I don’t think they can afford to lose much). I refuse to get too old and I’m sick of hearing it was better in the old days…let’s make it better now so we can tell that to our kids in twenty years.
