I have a favorite saying: “Less is more.”
The phrase is still correct if inverted: “More is less.”

You may ask, “What in the world are you talking about?” 

OK then, I guess I’ll need to explain.

Many women (and some men) like to buy and collect things until the home is completely cluttered with “stuff.” This doesn’t mean they stop buying. This stuff needs to be stored, cleaned and maintained. That means space, effort and time. Some of it draws electric energy. Some stuff gets in your way. Some things block one’s view and hide things we actually NEED so that we have to waste more time looking for what we really need by wading through the unnecessary items.

This is when MORE IS LESS.

I play tennis. Sometimes when my game is off, I realize that I am trying to win too hard and that is why I am missing shots I should be able to make. I back off on the intensity and my accuracy returns.

This is when LESS IS MORE.

Now let’s reverse this idea. 
I buy nothing I don’t absolutely need.
I have more spare money, more space, more free time… and so you see…

LESS IS MORE.

You buy more stuff, you have less money.

You complain more, you have less friends.

You think more clearly, you have less problems.

Again, 

I see what has happened in my tennis game and I slow it down and make sure I am on target and get more balls back. As a result, the opponent tries harder and misses more shots and I start performing well again.
The principle remains:

LESS IS MORE.
 and MORE IS LESS.

This rule applies in many ways in life.
 Check it out in your life!

I wish you a life with enough of everything you actually need.

And nothing that merely consumes your mind, body, soul, time, effort and closet space.

She needs a life with less in it. She is becoming overwhelmed with all the tasks, responsibilities, and things in her life. She’s also working her tail off in school to get a kick-ass degree that she hopes to use to help others one day.  With all this school work rightfully taking priority in her life, it’s no wonder she feels suffocated by all the extra.

This is not to say that she’s a miserable person.  She’s actually quite cheerful most of the time, even in the face of the numerous obstacles that are being thrown in her path.  All of these trials continue to leave her a stronger and better person in the end.

We have gotten to know each other through work.  She has been reading my blog, intrigued by the idea of minimalism and having a life with less and, therefore, started to do her own research.  She has become enthralled in these ideas that had initially grabbed me and inspired me to make changes in my own life.  So she came to me asking for my help, and I am more than happy to do so.

Because, you see, I think I may have found my purpose in all of this. Not only to help myself–which would have been reward enough–but also to help others who yearn to take this path but don’t know where to begin.  I feel that, even if I do nothing else to contribute in their journey, I–at the very least–have been called to raise awareness in their minds of how much better their lives could be if they break free from the consumerism monster!

Why should we live like the world tells us we should?

Show yourself that you’re better than that.  Show yourself some respect.

Treat yourself to a life far better than anyone else is capable of, as long as they are stuck in this depressing and disappointing cycle of More.  Learn the value and love the truth in Enough.

Live like nobody else!

I’m excited to begin incorporating my experiences of helping others into my blog.  It will still be, overall, about my journey; only now with the addition of my perspective of the journeys of those I’ve helped.

It would thrill me beyond belief to know that I’ve inspired someone to begin their own journey, and I would be ecstatic to be part of their support in its beginning.  It could mean offering a helping hand in going through their stuff (which is what I’ll be doing with this particular friend), or even just using my knowledge of the subject to guide and counsel them through some other form of communication. Whatever the means, I’m all about the end result.

Let’s get de-owning….and learn to want less together!

Say, what’s this, you ask?  A cigarette post on a food porn blog?  How vulgar!  Uncouth! Degenerate!

And while I understand your reaction – let me offer this explanation.  I do not smoke.  I never have.  Yeah, sure.  I have puffed my way through a few in my lifetime, made reckless either by youth or alcohol but in all cases – I regretted it.  I think cigarettes are really gross & I am very grateful for every stride this country takes making smokers feel like second-hand-smoke-baby-killers & relegating them to places like those DEPRESSING lucite cubes they corral them in at airports & the like.   It is so nice to come home from a night at a bar & not return home with hair that smells so bad that it gags you.  Nice not to have to wash all the clothes your wore, etc.  The one time I can get behind smoking is perhaps controversial but I stand by it.  It is OK to smoke if you are just trying to look cool.  I mean – look at these babes! No.  I am kidding.  I don’t think smoking looks cool.  Not anymore, at least.  But, the reality is – is that my boyfriend is a pretty heavy smoker and I am blown away by the amount of money he spends on cigarettes.  So – when driving through North Hollywood one day – I spotted a sign that read “Cigarettes – any carton – $24.95″ and I thought of Miles.  On his most recent trip to Los Angeles, I dragged him out there to suss out the situation.  Neither of us had any real expectation that he would be buying cartons of Marlboro Lights for $25 but it was worth the trip to find out.  We parked outside the very nondescript exterior (seen here – the white storefront to the left of Odyssey):

which was now devoid of any signage & stepped inside to see this:

It looked like a store that was going out of business.  To our surprise – we were greeted warmly & cheerfully.  Folks wanted to know how they could help.  Miles inquired about the $25 carton of cigarettes & they explained the situation.  You tell them your regular brand & they custom blend a few fresh tobaccos so that the resulting product tastes like your brand BUT without any chemicals or additives or any other harmful matter beyond what comes naturally in tobacco.  Then – for $25 – they give you a box of 200 empty cigarette tubes & you use a huge machine there & basically roll your own!  Here is the machine:

They put your box of tubes in a large cartridge & slide it into the machine & before you know it – the machine is spitting out perfect cigarettes.  Here is Miles watching his first few emerge.

So – while I do not encourage anyone take up the very nasty & VERY dangerous habit of smoking – it is kind of nice – for the inveterate smokers out there – to have an option like this that cuts out at least some of the toxins & a lot of the cost.  Perhaps, once you were fully transitioned to smoking just these – the quitting completely part might be that much easier.  I don’t know.  I just really liked the whole “roll your own” vibe & the people at Ciggy’s were really friendly.

Ciggy’s 4 Less is at 4812 Vineland Avenue in North Hollywood, 91601.  They even sell Tupperware-style containers to store the ciggies in & protect them from being crushed.  They also have a loyalty program involving referrals & frequent smoker miles.   Check them out, smokers, and don’t say I never did anything for you!

And PS – they also claim to be able to repair ANY broken computer or smart phone!

If you are procuring post-it notes from another firm, you agree on the price, quality, and amount of items, then you procure them. That’s the end of the relationship, except for those annoying stationery catalogues that will be sent for evermore.

If you are outsourcing a business process your company presently performs to a supplier then you are effectively lifting up the boundary wall of your company and rebuilding it around the supplier. Yes, they are still a supplier and are just contracted to provide a service, but to all intents and purposes they become a part of your supply chain, and therefore, an integral part of the service you offer to your own customers.

The oil spill caused by a BP rig explosion a couple of years ago off the southern coast of the USA is a textbook example. Several contractors were involved in the errors that led to the explosion and subsequent disaster, but as far as the media and politicians were concerned it was BP’s mess.

BP could have turned around and blamed the contractors they had working in the area at the time of the explosion, but would anyone have listened? When a firm contracts another to deliver a service there is an operational transfer of responsibility for delivering that service, but the accountability for making sure it works is not transferred from the client to supplier.

The buck stops with the client. Even if they paid a supplier to deliver a service, it doesn’t mean they can blame the supplier when it goes wrong. This is an important point to remember if you are considering the use of outsourcing as a way of sorting out a messy or disorganised business function. The supplier might sell their services as ‘your mess for less’, but the mistakes will still be your problem when they occur – both in terms of actual liability and reputation.

Today’s edition of You & Yours was subtitled ‘What makes a good pub?’ and presenter, Shari Vahl, was discussing this very topic with a Leeds publican by the name of Nicola Storey. Ms Storey went on to explain that the general population is now drinking less than it was a couple of years ago, something she backed up with statistics, concluding that ‘… that means we drank 138 million fewer pints in 2012 than in 2011.’ I smiled fondly at Ms Storey, as I smile fondly at all those who know the difference between ‘fewer’ and ‘less’ — and not only know the difference academically but actually put it into practice when they speak. ‘Fewer,’ in case you were wondering, goes with countable nouns (fewer occasions, fewer friends, or — in this case — fewer pints) and ‘less’ with uncountable nouns (less time, less company, or less beer). Ms Storey didn’t wonder, however; she knew; she was straight in there with her ‘fewer pints’ without even a hint of hesitation or doubt. This woman was elevated in my eyes. I liked her. I considered her a friend, almost.

And then she betrayed me — betrayed me in the most heinous way imaginable. Almost without pausing for breath she went on to tell us that ‘…back in March, when the chancellor made his budget, he announced to cut beer duty by one pence…’ Forget the weirdness of ‘he announced to cut’ — that’s bad, but could be put down to nerves, to having started one sentence and then got side-tracked into saying something slightly different. I could forgive my new Bestie for that. What I found unpardonable was — and it pains me to type such an abomination — ‘one pence’! One… pence? Oh, Nicola, Nicky, sweetie, how could you do that to me? I was all set to veer north and head to The Mustard Pot, for that is the name of Ms Storey’s pub, and imbibe several pints of best Yorkshire ale in an attempt to make up the shortfall in publicans’ incomes left by the 138 million fewer pints that had been consumed last year.

My quondam BFF should, of course, have said ‘one penny’ — a ‘penny’ is the name of the coin, thusly labelled, and of the smallest denomination of UK currency. It has two plurals: ‘pennies’ when referring to a multiplicity of small coins and ‘pence’ when referring to more than one example of the unit of currency. Neither ‘pennies’ nor ‘pence’ can be used as singular nouns. Now, don’t get me wrong, I have no beef with singular nouns ending in —ence. I do not see a fence and immediately insist it be called a ‘fenny’; nor do I recoil in horror from the synecdochically-named ‘sixpence’ or uncountable nouns like ‘independence’. But let’s be consistent, eh? The plural of ‘fence’ is ‘fences’; the plural of ‘sixpence’ is ‘sixpences’; and ‘independence’, being uncountable, has no plural. If this Storey woman (see how she’s fallen from grace?) is to be believed and ‘one pence’ is correct, then it is clearly countable, and must have the plural form ‘pences’. I shall petition the Royal Mint immediately to recast their dies and issue new coins bearing the words ‘five pences’, ‘ten pences,’ and so on.

Oh, and while I’m at it, I feel the Beatles’ back catalogue needs to be amended — ‘Penny Lane’ must be expunged and replaced by ‘Pence Lane’; The Big Bang Theory’s female sex bomb should similarly change her name; and as for the successor to the early Victorian boneshaker…

Provavelmente este problema em breve será resolvido no site oficial, por isso vamos ficar de olho no  http://lesscss.org/
Este erro pode ocorrer em alguns browsers quando compilamos nosso LESS via javacript (usando o “less-1.3.3.min.js” do site http://www.lesscss.org/), ele deveria fazer todo trabalho automaticamente, porém talvez seja necessario fazer o ajuste descrito abaixo.

Lembrando que usar javascript para compilar nosso LESS não é essencial para usarmos este recurso, e nem sempre a melhor prática. Podemos fazer uma pré-compilação do arquivo .less, para não usarmos o tempo de carregamento do browser do cliente (tem ferramentas bem legais que faz isso), para não ser necessario fazer esta complicação a cada carregamento de página com nosso javascript.  

Usar o javascript pode ser útil para pequenas aplicações ou mesmo para nosso desenvolvimento ser mais dinamico.
E se é bem legal testar este recurso afinal não vamos atrasar nosso aprendizado e migração para esta util ferramenta por conta desta pequeno detalhe.

Este erro acontece por causa de  uma falha na leitura do arquivo LESS com o ajax.
Abaixo esta o exemplo da excessão e como contorná-la.

Salve o mesmo na pasta do projeto  e mude a referencia da pagina html para ”less-1.3.3.X.js”  (nome do arquivo do link acima)

Notem que coloque a referencia do JQuery no codigo HTML citado acima, usei o mesmo para fazer o acesso do aquivo LESS (no ponto onde se encontra o problema)
Isto resolveu estes erros em todos os browsers que testei.

É importante se lembrar também que alguns navegandores (como no caso do  chrome) são habilitados para fazer requisições ajax apenas passando pelo servidor.

Portanto sua requisição não funcionará em todos os browsers se você colocar os arquivos em uma pasta fisica e tentar fazer o acesso diretamente pela URL (exemplo: c:/…/index.html), você deverá ter um serviço em sua estação para processar requisições (IIS, Apache) e assim passar a requisição para o servidor (exemplo http://localhost/…/index.html), só assim o AJAX funcionará devidamente.
Neste caso isto não é um problema com o LESS e sim um comportamento das requisições “Http Request”.
Porém você também pode configurar o navegador para processar o AJAX sem a necessidade de passar pelo servidor.

The answer actually ended up being pretty simple. Let’s say the gem has generated a style-sheet Less file named “bootstrap_and_overrides.css.less“. If you want to use the classes and mixins from it, all you have to do is to place the following at the top of your Sass file:

  @import "bootstrap_and_overrides";

Now, all the definitions from Less part of the story are available in your Sass too. An added bonus is that now you can separate your HTML from the style completely and just add Twitter related classes in your Sass style-sheet. For example, here is how you can set the image container div width to “span2” Twitter class.

The Haml source:

Sass style-sheet:

@import "bootstrap_and_overrides";

    @extend .span2;
  }
}

The resulting html is:

The end result is that the “span2″ will actually be applied to the image container because the “image_container” css class is acutally extended with “span2” mixin.

Apologies. That was a tad dramatic. I am not shelterless, sleeping in the cold or without any food. Neither did I default on rent. My apartment was not incinerated in fire and brimstone. I have not greatly sinned (that I am aware).

However, May 1st did herald my first day as a person without ownership of a shelter. This is by choice. This, allow me to clarify, is not some dastardly experiment to try to “identify” with people who are homeless, foodless and without shelter. But it is an experiment of a fashion. I chose this for the following positives that I felt I would gain.

1. No time or $ spent on cleaning, groceries and renting.
2. Being forced to be out in the city and more accessible to spontaneous lunches (at un-tried food trucks). Friends welcome!
3. Learning-by-doing about the challenges/negatives of being a  full-time professional urban itinerant.

So, some things I don’t look forward to:

1. No place I can come “home” to and cook on a daily basis.
2. No place to cook wearing nothing but an apron (apron optional).
3. No place to cook, Skype and listen to P-Square on full blast.
4. Did I mention no place to cook? (This is the part where I think I can exchange a busy 8-5 working friend’s couch for home cooked authentic Thai food. Hint, Hint, friends!)

Some other possible gains I look forward to:

1) Living with less. Everything I currently own fits into two rolling suitcases and a backpack. Many people have written about the “weight” of possessions. All I have to say on this topic is to quote a wise person. Every freedom, every choice, every liberty comes with a bondage, an attached partner, like Einstein’s theory of relativity, a requisite opposite. If you want to be free of brushing your teeth, you will be in bondage to cavities. If you want to be free of cavities, you must be a slave to your toothbrush. If I am going to be free of the cares of a living space to my name… what am I going to be a slave to? I want to find out. Secondly,

2) Less environmental impact, less consumption, less energy use, less food going bad. Borrowing books from the library, and Kindle, using public transportation, my bicycle, and more walking. Studying in the Library of Congress, like law students of old!

3) Being more considerate. Considerate of what I really consume, consider whether buying a new thing is worth the price of carrying it.

4) I will never have to get out of my bed at midnight and allow a stranger into my apartment because my roommate forgot she invited her friend, and forgot to be at home to receive him. (Sorry, my darling, precious and wonderful ex-roommate, I couldn’t resist adding this tale. I hope you know that I tell it with love and laughter!)

When I threw everything out and donated the rest, I learned that once it was gone… I could not even remember what it was I let go. And with it went any care I had about “What I would do without it?” Possessions have an uncanny knack for possessing us. I have a Property Exam tomorrow and I may fail the policy part of the exam because I agree with little of the underlying assumptions in…. so, I will update the particulars after I master the subject!

I would be lying to say I am not attached to anything. I could not get rid of the pale blue scarf with soft tassels that my Mom purchased for me in Kuala Lumpur in the 90’s. I could not let go my red silk robe with the golden embroidery that I found in Beirut. I kept a bottle with the sands of Qatar from a close TCK friend. I held on to a green round-bellied buddha figurine from another kindred spirit. I kept the necklace my Dad gave to me in Thailand when I was a little girl playing hide and seek with our pig-tailed macaque. I kept the copper and gold plated cuff bracelet with dancing elephants, a gift from a refugee in Kampala. The things that had epic stories attached to them, I did not let go. Because at the end of all things, when we take our last breath, what is left… is the story. It’s the only thing we own… our story. We get to tell it how we want, leave out the portions we don’t like and exaggerate the thrill of unforgettable moments.

So, as my part in this blog continues, living without a shelter that I own will become a tale, for the things I learn, the challenges I conquer and the truths I find. So, I hope you forgive the dramatic opening. But now you’re hooked aren’t you? I will let you know how the story goes as I live it, love it, and laugh all the way through it!
