I remember getting a call from Rahul Jethi, a banker in Sydney, and a good friend and whose brother

I remember getting a call from Rahul Jethi, a banker in Sydney, and a good friend and whose brother is in Indian army, early in the morning of 27th Nov 2008 [Sydney time which is 5.5 hours ahead of Indian time], about the terrorist attack in Mumbai. I switched the TV on and saw the reporting of the attack. It made me sad and angry at the same time. As it became clearer that LET was involved, I became more angry. I was helpless as I could not do much to help the people in Mumbai.

I watched the attack unfold and kept myself updated through the days. I kept reading the statements from leaders from all over the world. Thankfully, Kasab [the lone terrorist survivor] was arrested. I was angry that pakistan kept denying the nationalities of the terrorists even when the evidence was overwhelming. That has become the standard operating procedure for Pakistan. Shameful and outrageous!!

By now, we have details of Kasab’s interrogation/trial, and have seen the reports in various channels including ABC Australia, CNN and BBC. Only recently, Farid Zakaria covered it in CNN GPS programme. A great deal is known by now. It is all clear that 10 terrorists came from Pakistan and LET was the sponsoring terrorist organisation. These terrorists were trained in Pakistan. The whole world is asking Pakistan to bring the perpetrators [supporters/sponsors] of the Mumbai terrorist attack to justice.

Lot of things have changed since 26th Nov, 2008. I hope, things would keep moving in the right direction to prevent further terrorist attacks in India. The whole world has to work against the menace of terrorism. Either Pakistan changes its ways itself or the world forces it to change. There is no alternative option.

So many people lost their lives for no reason. This has to end.

As I see it, following come to my mind;

1. India will continue to have attacks of this nature because some elements in Pakistan are hostile to India and have an agenda to harm India. Some inside ISI and Pakistan army are madly fundamentalists and are pathologically inimical towards India.

2. India is a vast country with long borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh, from where these terrorists do cross into India and will keep crossing in future too. We have to do every thing to reduce if not prevent it. India must identify illegal Pakistani/Bangladeshi stayers in India and expel them without much delay. Throw them in the ocean if we have to but they can’t be allowed to stay in India. No vote bank politics please!

3. The whole world has to force Pakistan to dismantle the terrorist organisations and their infrastructure to prevent attacks from Pakistan. USA and Europe are crucial in this. India must keep working with the world powers to force Pakistan to change its ways. India needs to have the right people in the ministry of external affairs to be able to have a desired effect in this matter. Shashi Tharoor is a competent minister with the contacts and experience in these matters and may be, he should be made the cabinet minister.

4. India has to improve the intelligence gathering capability significantly.

5. India has to improve the command structure to face such attacks effectively and efficiently. There was a significant delay in getting NSG commandos to Mumbai during the attack. They had to wait for hours before a plane could be arranged to fly them to Mumbai. That is outrageous. India needs to have a proactive thinking rather than a reactive one. Even the chief minister Mr Deshmukh took more than 4 hours to return to Mumbai.

6. Indian media must be forced to follow certain rules during such attacks. Media was showing the live coverage of the attack which was used by the terrorists’ minders/handlers in Pakistan to guide the terrorists. It was not helpful. I dare say, it led to many more deaths than it would have been otherwise. Indian media needs to be told that certain things are not on. Their TRP battle is not above human lives and national interests.

7.1. India has to become ruthless in investigating and prosecuting those who are involved in terrorism and those who are supporting such elements. There should be a speedy trial. Once convicted, these terrorists should be punished severely without any delay. It is not a good idea to keep convicted criminals like Afzal Guru to stay in the jail because his mercy petition is pending with the president for this unusually long period. Why is his mercy petition pending with Indian president for years? This is outrageous! Those dreaded terrorists who were released during the Indian Airlines plane hijack, were also in the Indian prison for years without a trial. India has done a good job by establishing a national investigation agency [NIA]. NIA officials should be given freedom to work independently without any political pressure.

7.2. India must not allow any segment of its society to feel alienated. All opportunities/benefits must be truly available to every Indian irrespective of their region, religion or caste. Nation building must be taken up with redoubled vigour.

8.1. India must have a campaign to do public education to make people aware re how to keep the eyes/ears open to anything unusual and what to do when a terrorist attack is happening. We saw a big crowd of onlookers during NSG [National Security Guards] counter-attack which is not smart. Where was the crowd control?

8.2. The civil police must be trained properly. It is not a good idea for top police officials to be in one single car which was not bullet proof. This was the case even when they had access to the bullet proof vehicles. This led to costly loss of lives of the leaders of police force. We hear that Mr Karkare and others did not receive immediate help after being wounded. One wonders whether some of these great policemen would not have died if we had an efficient medical, police and rescue systems.

8.3. India and Indian public needs to do every thing to look after the near/dear ones/dependents of the brave security men/women who give their lives to protect us and the country. Gov authorities need to do many things to let people know that India has utmost respects and gratitude for such brave men/women.

9. Indian leaders were issuing the statements after statements but not much came out of that. We should learn to show results rather than just talks.

10.1. India needs to improve its military capabilities in such a way that Pakistan or its supporters do not dare look towards India. We need to revamp the capabilities of our air force, navy and artillery.

10.2.While working on the military capabilities, India needs to work with redoubled vigour to settle the outstanding issues with its neighbours.

I am keen to hear from you with your views on these matters.

This was the same day when a lot sufferring and drama unfolded. This was the same day when India was humiliated in front of the whole world by a meagre of ten terrorists that too for a time period of 60 hours. No one in India and even in the world can forget that. So what have we done to withstand such a future attack(specially when LeT terrorists Headly and Rana are caught) and also to bring the perpetators behind this vandal act.
So guys, I am waiting for comments, debates, clarifications, pionts and suggestions on ” has anything changed and what all we can do”.
For tommorrow, let’s pray for all those who were killed in the deadly attacks and declare a no tolerance policy towards terror…..let our leaders know about it.

THIS PARTICULAR POST HAS BEEN MAILED TO US BY A VISITOR (SIDDARTH REDDY), SO WE CLAIM NO AUTHORITY O

THIS PARTICULAR POST HAS BEEN MAILED TO US BY A VISITOR (SIDDARTH REDDY), SO WE CLAIM NO AUTHORITY ON THE MATERIAL.

Mumbai. Exactly a year back, ten terrorists came to Mumbai to kill people and subsequently to get killed in the process, so that they were rewarded virgins in the heaven after they died. Nine of them (assuming the official count to be true) were killed while one, called Ajmal Amir Kasab, was captured alive. While we know (to the extent government and media wants us to know) how Kasab has been doing in the last one year, have we ever wondered what happened to those nine killed?

Our correspondent immediately took up the assignment and did a GODgle search (a search engine especially made for heaven by dead Google engineers) to find about the nine terrorists, but he couldn’t get any result. Since no Microsoft employees were involved in making of Godgle, our correspondent was dead sure that it was not some bug.

After filing an RTI in the office of MCH (Municipal Corporation of Heaven), our correspondent received the shocking revelation that none of those nine killed terrorists actually reached the heaven. They didn’t even get a waiting list, in fact they were straightway sent to the hell.

Clearly it was a Breaking News. So our correspondent decided to travel to hell to interview some of the dead terrorists. Since the diplomatic relations between Hell and Heaven are on rocks due to the ongoing and historical enmity between Satan and God, our correspondent was denied visa to go to hell. But after a lot of deliberations and requests, finally permission for a telephonic interview with one of the terrorists was allowed.

The nine dead terrorists apparently authorized a certain Imran Babar to speak on their behalf to Fake News. Followings are the highlights of the Fake News interview with the dead terrorist:

Fake News (FN): Thanks for speaking to us Imran. How are you feeling?

Imran Babar (IB): O benchod! Aag laga ke rakhi hai pichhwade mein ek saal se inhone, aur kaisa feel karunga? (My ass has been on fire since last one year, what am I supposed to feel?)

FN: Sorry for your ass Imran, but it must have been a shocker to find yourself in the hell after being promised virgins in the heaven?

IB: abbey jale pe namak mat chhidak! (abbey, don’t add injury to my insult!) Virgins? My ass! I’m getting fucked in my ass daily by the Satan here.

FN: Oh! Sorry again for your ass Imran, but did you seriously have no idea, when you were alive, that you could actually end up in such a situation?

IB: How was I supposed to know then? I could make bombs, use Google Maps and operate Kalashnikovs, but that doesn’t mean I knew everything. I depended upon my commanders (in LET) for all the instructions and knowledge. I blindly trusted them on these matters.

FN: Do you feel cheated by them?

IB: inki maa ki! I feel such an asshole now to have believed their crap. I’m sure those bastards would too end up coming here. I’m gonna fuck their happiness I swear! benchod saale!

FN: Can you tell us a little more about yourself and your friends?

IB: There is nothing to tell. We are being tortured like hell. Well, what more do you expect in hell?

FN: Do you repent your beliefs and deeds?

IB: Do I need to answer that question?

FN: Apart from earlier terrorists, whom else did you meet in hell?

IB: Oh that’s so funny, you would be shocked to know, and your editors back on earth will never publish the names. In fact, now I’m dead sure there is no way out there on earth where we can predict who’s gonna land up in heaven or hell, and yet we are fighting for ages now. I’m sure you too must be feeling the same back there in the heaven. Tell me dude, do you really get virgins there?

FN: None that I’ve been awarded yet.

IB: What the hell! Then where are all the virgins?

FN: You still believe in this infidel vs. faithful talk?

IB: Well, the Satan talks about them before pounding my ass. Sometimes he sounds just like my earlier commanders in Lashkar-e-Taiba. But the good thing is that he doesn’t promise me any good days ahead like those assholes in Lashkar.

FN: One of your friends, Kasab, has been caught alive. Do you guys know it?

IB: Of course we know it. When we found him missing in the hell, we were pretty sure he was alive, as there is no way he could have gone to the heaven. We heard he’s been provided biryani and books. Lucky bastard! Man, this sucks! Here I’m getting ass-fucked by Satan and there he is enjoying all the hospitality of Indians. I’m sure the future terrorists will not listen to the assholes of Lashkar and won’t kill themselves. It’s far better to be alive.

FN: Where do you see yourself five years from now?

IB: With a wider ass and a hungrier Satan.

FN: Since this interview will be read by living people back on earth, do you have any message for the aspiring terrorists down there?

IB: Oh yeah! I have one simple advice for them – if you want the virgins, stay away from the assholes.

AP People light candles outside the Taj Mahal Hotel which was attacked last year in Mumbai, on the eve of he first anniversary of the 26/11 terror attacks.

Amid the ongoing blame game in Mumbai’s police establishment over who failed in the line of duty, the bustling metropolis observes on Thursday the first anniversary of the 26/11 terror attack in solemn remembrance of those who lost their lives.

Former Mumbai police commissioner Hasan Gafoor’s interview to a news magazine wherein he said that a section of senior police officers refused to be on the ground and take on the terrorists, touched off a controversy ahead of the anniversary, prompting Chief Minister Ashok Chavan to say, “police are a very disciplined organisation and this (remarks) does not fit into it.”

The report of the government-appointed Ram Pradhan Committee, which went into the lapses leading to one of the most brazen terror strikes in recent memory, is yet to be made public though “relevant portions” were tabled in the Legislature.

There will be a series of events to commemorate the attacks, including a parade by police and with its new weaponry and communication gadgets.

Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram will unveil a martyr’s memorial at the Police Gymkhana in south Mumbai, while a prayer meeting is also scheduled at the historical Gateway of India.

Declaring security as the government’s top priority, State Home Minister R.R. Patil said Rs 226 crore have been allocated to the Home department for strengthening it.

Force One, an elite force formed on the lines of the National Security Guards (NSG), became operational with the first batch of 216 commandos of the State’s own specialised counter-terrorism unit inducted on Tuesday.

The commandos have undergone rigorous training and will be provided all infrastructure to enable them be on par with international counter-terrorism units, Mr. Chavan said.

While there was outrage and spontaneous outpouring of grief over the tragic loss of lives in the 26/11 carnage, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Mumbai in July and met the staff of Hotel Taj, who risked their lives to save the guests, many of them foreigners.

Ms. Clinton stayed at the Tower Wing of the Hotel to express solidarity with the victims of the terror attack that left 166 people dead, including 22 foreigners of whom five were Americans.

NSG commandos killed eight of the 10 Lashker-e-Taiba terrorists who attacked Mumbai, while police killed another and captured Ajmal Kasab.

NSG lost Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan and commando Gajendra Singh Bisht. Unnikrishnan’s parents plan to visit the spot where their son attained martyrdom, on November 27, a day after the anniversary.

The Jewish Chabad House where Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivka were killed along with others in Colaba’s Nariman House, will reopen on Wednesday. A memorial service for the Holtzbergs and other victims of the attacks will mark the reopening.

Though Mr. Patil said his priority would be to ensure compensation to the victims’ families at the earliest, the government recently admitted before the State Human Rights Commission that more than 70 per cent of the 26/11 victims had not received compensation from the Centre.

Indian Hotels, the company which owns the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, and EIH Ltd, which operates Oberoi-Trident, have so far got Rs 167 crore as insurance claim from General Insurance Corporation on account of the attacks. The part-payment was given from the total claim of Rs 500 crore, a GIC official said.

The terror onslaught had triggered a spontaneous public outcry against the government with a string of protest demonstrations and candle-light vigils.

The outcry forced heads in the government to roll and both Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and his deputy Mr. Patil had to quit in quick succession.

However, a year later, Mr. Deshmukh has been appointed a Union minister and Mr. Patil is back as Home Minister.

Caesar Mandal, TNN 24 November 2009, 01:14am IST

KOLKATA: In a major boost to counter-insurgency operations against North-East militant outfits and terrorism, a top Jamaatul Mujahideen

Bangladesh (JMB) leader has reportedly has been neutralized’ by Indian intelligence officers with the help of their Bangladesh counterparts.

Moulana Saidur Rahaman, chief (aamir) of the JMB, has sneaked into India after being hounded out his hideouts in Bangladesh, say intelligence sources. The outfit is believed to be the mentor of NE insurgents and Islamic terror masterminds, who have been in Bangladesh for years. Due to the crackdown, top JMB leaders are either on the run or in custody.

Intelligence officers believe Rahaman played a crucial role behind jehadi activities in Bangladesh and his organisation worked in tandem with the Bangladesh chapters of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and HuJI who are responsible for several terror attacks in India. Directed by their Pakistani handlers, Rahaman and his brigade arranged for training and shelter of LeT and HuJI operatives, say sources.

Sensing trouble in Bangladesh, Kamtapur Liberation Organisation chief Jiban Singh has sent feelers to Indian agencies to surrender, say sources.

Rahaman and son Abu Talha Muhammad Fahim alias Bashar narrowly escaped a Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raid on a hideout in Sabujganj near Dhaka on November 1. But his wife Nurunnahar alias Himu and brother-in-law Russel’s wife, Mimi, were rounded up. RAB officials seized SIM cards and documents that revealed his network across Bangladesh and how he liaised with N-E insurgent outfits.

“Most N-E militant leaders, including the top rung of Ulfa, were under Rahaman’s shelter, and their cadres were trained by JMB instructors,” said a senior intelligence officer.

“JMB men are now on the run. In fact, most Indian rebel leaders are trying to return to India. We have spoken with some of them through our sources, and they are now ready to join talks or even surrender,” said a top intelligence officer in the North-East.

The direct cooperation of Bangladesh security forces helped Indian agencies round up two top Ulfa leaders Sashadhar Chowdhury and Chitraban Hazarika, self-styled foreign secretary and finance secretary of Ulfa.

Sources said Indian intelligence agencies are now trying to neutralize one of Rahaman’s most trusted lieutenants, who knows every detail about Indian insurgents in Bangladesh. Like India, the USA is also interested in JMB’s top leaders as they hold the key to Islamic militancy in south Asia. Sources said a telephonic intercept by a US agency led to the arrest of five dreaded LeT operatives operating from Bangladesh, who were in direct contact with the LeT leadership in Pakistan.

I am indeed happy that many of my former classmates were able to pass the recently-held licensure exam. To celebrate this occasion, one had arranged a party and I was invited. =D

So after going to church yesterday, I went to Molino in Cavite to have fun with them. Several months after our graduation day, nothing seemed to have changed much. They are still the same noisy and hilarious friends I once had.

There were kainan, kwentuhan, tawanan… typical of our unique Pinoy culture where every single event calls for costly treats and a merry celebration…

To learn more about contemporary Filipino culture, check out the Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

http://www.ejournals.ph

I met a friend who, instead of pursuing teaching, has ventured on modeling as a career. He taught me several things of the elite, from diet to drinking vodka. =P

Speaking of the licensure exam, I was told that LET review classes did little help to my former classmates. It is still what you had learned in college that determines your chance to pass the exam.

After the party, I asked the host to lend me her LET reviewers which she happily gave me. It was a bag full of highly valuable scratch hand-outs. =D

I am going to collect more reviewers. I just don’t know how to find them. Mind helping me guys? =D

~

I am sick right now. It feels terrible. My thinking processes are barren.

I hate this! A healthy mental condition is necessary to retain information from our timetabled LET review sessions.

If it won’t cease till tomorrow, I will have to file a sick leave for a day or two.

Need rest and healthy foods.. also, a Sabbath day but I can’t rest at home… Housemates are too noisy…Hayyyyy…

Sports and Music. Both packed with vibe, aggression, anticipation, excitement, noise, energy, and soul. As an athlete, hearing a song that boils your blood and widens your eyes is just one small characteristic in which music can transcend physically into your own actions and thoughts. Eclectic restaurants and lounges are effective with paralleling their visual atmosphere to the aura it emits. Sport venues are no different. Rarely, unless you are at a cricket match, will the arena blair ‘Mozart’s 21st concerto in C major’ at the height of battle. 4th and 2 and one play to win or lose the game, here are the top 10 (due to change with time).

Source: DNA India

Soumya Menon / DNATuesday, November 17, 2009 10:06 IST

Bangalore: Extracts from conversations between suspected Lakshar-e-Taiba members Tahawwur Hussain Rana and David Coleman Headley, who are currently in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), speak volumes on the code words – mostly corporate and business jargon – that were used to pass on information to each other.

According to senior police officers, the two used corporate jargon during conversations because they did not figure on the intelligence agency radar, even when sleuths were looking for clues.

It was only after the FBI started tapping into telephonic conversations, emails and personal meetings between Rana, David Coleman Headley, ‘Individual B’ and ‘Individual A’ (an LeT member) that the duo were trapped and their schemes revealed. Serious ’spying’ began soon after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and continued till October this year.

Interestingly, Rana used to run an immigration services business, for which Headley – at times – claimed to work. After his arrest, Headley made it clear that words like ‘property’ and ‘investments’ were used as cover terms for violent actions.

From a copy of the criminal case filed by the FBI against Rana, which is currently in the possession of DNA, it can be deciphered that in addition to the ‘Mickey Mouse Project’, which referred to a plot to target a Danish newspaper that published cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, the co-conspirators referred to targets through words like ‘investments’, ‘projects’, ‘business’ and ‘action’. They described theirs hopes for success through terms like ‘rich’, ‘richer’ and ‘profit’.

The document stated that in July and August 2009, Headley exchanged a series of emails with ‘LeT member A’. The emails specifically used businesslike statements (quite literally, at that) such as ‘I need to see you for some new investment plans’, the reply for which was ‘What do you want me to do? Where are you interested in making investments?’ The conversation further mentioned ‘Rahul’, which was reportedly found to stand for Rahul Bhatt, son of film veteran Mahesh Bhatt.

They also used a lot of business jargon while discussing the death of Harkat-ul-Jihadi-Islami (HUJI) chief Ilyas Kashmiri, who was killed on September 14, 2009. The most striking part of the conversation was the liberal usage of the word ‘doctor’. Kashmiri was referred to as ‘doctor’ while Rana was labelled ‘Dr’ or ‘doc’.

After the initial conversation between Headley and the other members, which spoke on ‘the doctor getting married’ (referring to him getting killed), the FBI found Headley checking for information on Kashmiri’s death through the Google search engine.

During an interrogation, Headley revealed that after Kashmiri’s death, Rana had sent out a cryptic message stating: “There is some sort of an arrangement that is very accurate…I mean that of these guys… all their estimates are so accurate….The estimate…whatever assessment they do for any property is always accurate, so that have a very discerning eye, a very discerning eye on the market.”

Headley had then replied by stating that he “will be coming to Pakistan soon, but there is nothing to do there. Now, let us quit the company. When a company goes bankrupt, it starts laying off its employees.” Through this, Headley was referring to Kashmiri’s death as a major loss to the jihadi cause.

The person, referred to as Individual B, then said, “When a businessman wants to do something, he has to contend with the risk factor also. Most people don’t want to take risks but be praised for whatever little they have done.”

To this, Headley responded: “Then there will be no profit because when you have high aims, the investment will be as risky as the chance of profit. At the same time, there will be a great chance of loss. I am telling you, other companies competing with us are running losses in terms of profit as well as the market. In these conditions, we will have to face bankruptcy within six months. By the end of twelve months, our companies will be done for.”

On September 20, 2009, Headley was found telling another associate in Pakistan that the “business must go on. The main thing is that I should have a steady income. I don’t care if I have to work for Microsoft or GE or Philips.”

Through the names of multi-national companies, the alleged militant was referring to terror groups such as LeT and HuJI.

Updated on Sunday, November 15, 2009, 18:41 IST Tags:Lashkar-e-Toiba, Bangladesh, Exremists

Dhaka: More than 60 Pakistani and Indian “foreign extremists” are operating in Bangladesh, with security agencies tracking at least 20 operatives of Lahore based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), reports and officials said on Sunday.

“We are aware that Bangladesh could be a soft area for foreign militants and terrorists to take refuge particularly from neighbouring Pakistan and India in view of intensified security clampdown there” deputy commissioner of polices’ detective branch Monorul Islam told a news agency.

He said that in the past several months police had arrested 11 suspected foreign extremists belonging to different outfits from both India and Pakistan and a manhunt was underway to nab several others in line with the information obtained from them.

Islam said of the 11, six were suspected LeT operatives or linked to the Pakistani outfits. Three being Pakistani and three being Indian while others belonged to India’s separatist ULFA, KLO or the gangster Dawood Ibrahim’s network members.

His comments came as the New Age newspaper quoting intelligence sources today reported that over 50 religious extremists from Pakistan and India were active in Bangladesh in collaboration with Bangladeshi Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI). In another report, the Daily Star quoting intelligence sources said police were tracking 20 more LeT operatives after the arrest of three Pakistani nationals three days ago.

Of the 20 LeT operatives, some hail from Kerala and Jammu and Kashmir and some from Pakistan. Most of them work as textile technicians here; the report said quoting anonymous official familiar with investigation.

The reports and comments came as Bangladesh three days ago arrested three suspected Pakistani operatives, all qualified engineers who were planning to return home soon.

Their arrest came under a manhunt for militants who allegedly hatched a plot to attack the Indian High Commission and US Embassy in the capital city after the detective branch’s plane-clothesmen last week arrested two suspected LeT operatives and one HuJI man.

Police earlier said the local operatives of LeT and their Bangladeshi partner HuJI man received information from Pakistan over phone while they visited Baridhara diplomatic enclave to chalk up the attack plan.

Ret Maj Gen ANM Muniruzzaman, who heads Bangladesh Institute for Peace and Security Studies (BITSS) told PTI that geographic features has made the country a safe heaven for such foreign operatives.

“Particularly an intensified military campaign and US intervention against militants in Pakistan alongside Afghanistan could prompt these elements to seek refuge in Bangladesh” he said suggesting “an effective regional cooperation to face a regional crisis”

A senior security official preferring anonymity told a news agency earlier that the previous “sub-state” activities of Pakistan’s Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) made Bangladesh a transit route for regional militants groups.

Posing as a Jew, he even visited Nariman House, the Jewish Chabad centre, in July 2008.

The Mumbai police today carried out raids in Bandra, its adjoining suburb Khar and BPO hub Goregaon in search of Headley’s local acquaintances and contacts.

“He (Headley) mapped the Chhatrapati Shivaji terminus, Taj and Trident hotels and Nariman House. We are interrogating (filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt’s son) Rahul to find out when he went to Leopold Café. That he did is certain — when he did that is what we need to know,” a top officer said.

Headley had visited the Mumbai home of Rahul, who contacted police after learning of the terror suspect’s arrest by America’s Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) last month.

The source said Headley, a Pakistani-born US national, and his associate Tahawwur Hussain Rana stayed in Hotel Outram, a seedy motel in Mumbai’s Fort area, for about a fortnight in July 2008.

Born Daood Gilani, Headley, who changed his name and passport in 2006, posed as a Jewish American during his Mumbai stay. A source close to Rahul too confirmed that Headley had claimed to be a Jew.

“It is a mystery how he got into that building (Nariman House) just posing as a Jew. We are probing if he had anybody helping him locally. The FBI seized a book called “How to Pray Like a Jew” from him at the time of his arrest in Chicago. He had prepared himself thoroughly to pose as a Jew,” the officer said.

This morning, the police detained two tourist guides near the Gateway of India for questioning. It is suspected they may have aidedHeadley or other 26/11 plotters.

“The lead for this came from the FBI,” the officer acknowledged. “We now know most details about Headley’s recce of the terror targets, but there is a bit of a problem in case of Trident hotel as much of its past records were destroyed in the 26/11 attack. But we are getting there and will soon have the information.”

The investigators were always sure that Lashkar operatives had done a recce of both hotels. “The speed with which the Trident attackers moved around the lobby, visited the basement restaurant, Frangipani, and later headed straight for the lift to go to the 18th floor to set up their control room proves this,” the officer said.

Between 2006 and 2009, Headley ran a firm called Immigration Law Centre out of Tardeo AC Market in south Mumbai with the help of a local Parsi woman. Late last night, officials of the federal National Investigating Agency, which has now joined the probe withMumbai police, visited Headley’s immigration firm.

“A lot of facts have emerged from the interrogation of his co-worker/partner at the firm. She has been very co-operative. We now knowHeadley rarely used mobile phones and computers; but he did have a Tata Indicom landline number that he used while operating this immigration business. His mobile number is also with us and is leading us to some of his local contacts/acquaintances,” thesource said.

Officially, Headley’s job was to facilitate US and Canadian visas for semi-skilled and unskilled workers. The investigators are trying to find out whether he had any contacts in local consulates.

Headley preferred to pay salaries, or make other payments, in cash. He rarely used banking channels and spent limited time at the office —“hardly two hours in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening”, thesource said. (News sourced from The Telegraph)

Source: ASIA TIMES By Siddharth Srivastava NEW DELHI – As India’s military, police

Source: ASIA TIMES

By Siddharth Srivastava

NEW DELHI – As India’s military, police, intelligence and civilian authorities combine resources to launch the nation’s largest-ever offensive to root out Naxalite (communist) rebels, high-level government sources are pointing towards growing evidence of foreign support of the Maoist rebels.

Among the “outside forces” at work are remnants of the Sri Lankan Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), claim Indian security agencies. Contacts have told Asia Times Online that the LTTE, defeated in May by the Sri Lankan government after decades of struggle, is training the Maoists in the type of guerilla war tactics for which the LTTE were known, including surprise hit-and-run tactics and jungle warfare.

The location of these LTTE-Maoist training centers is thought to be remote parts of central and southern India already under the complete control of the leftists, who have recently been dubbed the “Red Taliban”.

Security officials, who say they are monitoring coastal areas for infiltration by the LTTE in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Orissa, say the joint expertise of the two insurgent groups could form a potent mixture.

New Delhi, pointing to the lack of an effective LTTE leadership in the wake of its defeat, is for now ruling out deeper strategic ties between the two groups, such as them launching a combined war against the state. Security forces believe out-of-work mercenaries who were earlier involved in training LTTE cadres are now heading Maoist training camps in India.

“One element that we are closely looking at is the indoctrination processes followed by the LTTE that turned some of the cadres into suicide attackers. This could have dangerous portents as far as Indian Maoists are concerned,” one official said.

India’s Maoists rebels are estimated to number about 25,000. The insurgent group’s heavily armed, well-trained guerillas say they are fighting oppression and exploitation to create a classless society. With the group’s ability to hide among civilian populations and connections to other insurgent groups in northeast India, India’s security forces face a serious challenge.

Sources say that at least 12 LTTE members recently infiltrated India to teach guerrilla warfare techniques to the Naxalites. Indian security sources suspect the LTTE militants may already be training the Maoist’s military wing, the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army.

In June, New Delhi labeled the Naxalite underground political party, the Communist Party of India (Maoist), a terrorist organization, putting it in the same league as outfits such as the Lashkar-e-Toiba and the decimated LTTE.

India is also concerned about aid possibly coming to Indian Maoists from Nepal, including the supply of arms, as well as from China.

New Delhi this week insinuated that Maoists were procuring arms from China. “The Chinese are big smugglers … suppliers of small arms. I am sure that the Maoists also get them,” said Home Secretary G K Pillai. He ruled out deeper links beyond the delivery of arms.

Indian security agencies claim Nepal is an important source of weapons and possibly funds being channeled to the Naxalites from international sympathizers. Home Minister P Chidambaram said that aside from well-known routes through Myanmar and Bangladesh, the rebel group may be procuring weapons through Nepal.

Unlike more secure borders with Pakistan or Bangladesh, due to high human traffic the India-Nepal border is porous and remains an active smuggling route.

The Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoists) has declared that its backing of Indian Maoists is only ideological, with no “working relationship”, but New Delhi feels the reality is quite different.

Long way to go

In the past few weeks, India set in motion its biggest and most-organized offensive to root out the four-decade-old communist insurgency. “Operation Green Hunt” involves more than 100,000 federal paramilitary forces, some of which have being withdrawn from Kashmir.

The central forces’ offensive is focused on strongholds in Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh states. Although it has not yet been launched, intelligence-gathering has begun with the aim of catching Naxal leaders in Andhra Pradesh, as this group constitutes the majority of the Maoist’s top brass.

With security forces poised to begin flushing out the Maoists, voices of dissent are being raised.

Using direct force against the Maoists will not be easy, given the widespread areas of their influence, largely sympathetic civilian populations and the difficult terrain, argue some critics. Others suggest that a better solution lies in improving the long-term economic prospects of poor tribal and peasant populations through land reform and employment opportunities.

However, observers say the state cannot build roads, schools, hospitals and electricity in such a hostile environment

Although comparisons have been made with this year’s defeat of the LTTE by Sri Lankan forces, these overlook the facts that the Tigers were cornered in a much smaller pocket of land and it had taken many years for the conflict to reach that stage.

In the face of the looming government offensive, the communist rebels have killed more than 40 people – including 21 security forces – in the past month. Brazen attacks have included the hijack of an express train for several hours, kidnaps and killings of government officials as well as blowing up schools across central and eastern India.

Since 2008, Maoists attacks have claimed about 1,200 lives, with Maoist-linked violence killing nearly 8,000 people in India over the past two decades. According to official estimates, Naxalism has affected 2,000 police stations spread over 223 districts across 20 states in India.

In the early 1990s, the number of districts affected by Maoist violence stood at just 15 in four states; this has now risen alarmingly. The Maoists rebels have proliferated in the states of Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, Bihar, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh, referred to as the “red corridor”.

India’s rich coal-mining activity is concentrated in these states, which have large tribal belts. These provinces, though rich in natural resources, score very low on human development indices, creating wealth gaps that the rebels often capitalize on to gain public support.
