On a recent Saturday, my date and I went to the Philadelphia Flea Market held that weekend in Headho

On a recent Saturday, my date and I went to the Philadelphia Flea Market held that weekend in Headhouse Square, near the east end of South Street. Dozens of vendors were crowded under the covered walkway between Lombard and Spruce, spilling out onto the sidewalk on both sides.

We started at one end and worked our way slowly through the teeming treasure trove of vintage toys, retro clothes and shoes, ceramics, jewelry, watches, furniture, antique cameras, handmade quilts, faded photographs, and every imaginable kind of trinket.

Admiring this or that piece, pointing out particularly ugly artifacts, or sharing a moment of nostalgia over some common remembrance from our childhoods gave us plenty to talk about. It was also fun to engage the vendors about specific objects – a lot of the people on the flea market circuit are avid collectors or specialize in a particular era or manufacturer, and they can really tell you a lot of information about what they’re selling.

But the best part was the challenge we gave ourselves of finding a great gift for the other person for under $10. My date bought me an old-school pocket level and package of straight razors, to add to my collection of vintage office supplies. And, after looking at nearly every single item at the flea market (twice), I purchased for my date a shallow wood bowl with a unique square shape. Having satisfied ourselves that we had seen everything we wanted to see, we tucked our packages under our arms and headed home to exchange presents.

For me? You shouldn't have!

How cheap we talkin’: Free to browse! Spend up to $5 on an iced drink or a snack to walk around with, and up to $10 buying your date a little gift!

Why this will impress your date: Show off your knowledge of obscure comic book characters, vintage lace, cast-iron horseshoes, or any number of treasures you might have once collected (or maybe still collect).

The Inside Game: The best time for great finds is first thing in the morning. The best time for great deals is just before close.

Score Extra Points: By making an offer. There’s something really sexy about watching someone engaged in the art of assertive and persuasive bargaining.

Next date: Most any weekend there is a flea market going on somewhere in Philly. For example the Uhuru flea market takes place in Clark Park once a month on Saturdays (rain date Sundays). The next date is July 23rd. (Thanks, Lily!)

There are also the Philadelphia Flea Markets, which rotate locations around the city (the Headhouse Square market was part of this series). Their next market is one of their most popular annual events, Saturday, Sept 10th at 22nd and Fairmount.

Meanwhile, the Market at the Piazza operates every Saturday and Sunday, 12-7pm, year round. It’s more of an artisan market than a true flea market, but there are plenty of niche vendors.

Look like rain? Head via free shuttle to the Pennsy flea market, Philadelphia’s largest (and indoor/outdoor) flea market, which also operates every Saturday and Sunday, year round (8am-6pm). Another rainy day option would be the semi-annual (spring and winter) R5 productions Punk Rock flea market, which is held indoors and is an especially good place to find vintage clothes and records.

One of my favorite cheap dates this time of year is to take a blanket and some treats to one of the many outdoor movie screenings that take place all over Philly all through the summer months. I said it once, and I’ll say it again: There is something undeniably romantic about cuddling up after the sun goes down, sharing some candy and maybe a clandestine bottle of wine or beer, and taking in an outdoor movie on a hot summer night.

And from the looks of this handy-dandy list I’ve prepared − complete with titles and times! – this is a date you can enjoy almost any given night of the summer! Choose from Blockbusters at Penn’s Landing, classic favorites at Schuylkill Banks and Liberty Lands Park, Indie hits at the Piazza, films with local ties at Headhouse Square and more! There is literally something happening almost every single night, and they are all FREE to attend.

Just BYO blankets and bottles and enjoy the show − and your date!

Last year, I recommended going to one of Philly’s many street fairs and festivals, as a great cheap date idea: There’s (usually) no cost for entry, there’s (almost always) live music or entertainment to enjoy, and there’s lots of cool stuff to look at and fun foods to try! Of course, if you don’t want to spend date money at the food stands you can always bring your own and dine picnic style – and bringing your own water anyway is a smart (and cost-saving) move.

In short, Philly’s festivals come in all shapes and sizes, and they are a great opportunity to venture out to a different park or neighborhood, mingle with a new crowd, get some sun and some exercise, see some great live music, meet up with friends, or just enjoy the company of your date.

Once a month, starting tonight, June 2nd, take your date and a fistfull of dollars to Baltimore Avenue in West Philadelphia for the second (now) annual Dollar Stroll!

Featuring live music, street performers, sidewalk vendors and $1 deals on everything from ice cream to samosas to theater tickets, it’s going to be hard to find more bang for your buck anywhere in the city tonight.

This event turns Baltimore Avenue into a delightful open-air parade of sights, smells, and sounds, but as I learned last year, the lines do get long. My advice for making it a great date: go early (the event runs from 5:30-8:30pm), don’t try to hit every venue, and use this handy vendor list to plan your route!

Note: If you miss tonight’s stroll, there are 3 more this season. Pencil in your next date for July 7th, August 4th, or September 1st!

I admit that I was a little hesitant at first (ok, resistant may be more accurate) to the idea of trying “disc golf,” “frisbee golf,” (or “FROLF” as my date likes to call it). But after a few hours spent flinging discs, tramping through the woods, and feigning a competitive edge, I was sold. This game is really fun! And being that it’s totally free to play, it’s also a cheap date! In fact, the Sedgley Woods disc golf course is actually one of the oldest free, public pole-hole disc golf courses in the United States. A more detailed history of the sport here in Philadelphia can be found here.

Disc golf also has the benefit of being an outdoor sport that takes place mostly under the cover of trees — a definite advantage for hot summer afternoons. And much like standard golf, you can go at your own pace, allowing plenty of time for flirting and joking around. You will need to invest in a specialized disc, which is flatter and smaller than a traditional frisbee and specially designed for the sport. Never fear if you find that aspect intimidating — there are usually some kind and friendly Friends of Sedgley camped out at the entrance to the park selling discs (proceeds go to benefit the park). The best part? The satisfying clang of metal you hear every time you throw your disc into the basket.

Benches!

How cheap we talkin’?: Entrance to the course is absolutely FREE! If you are a first-timer, you may have to invest $9-12 in a disc, generally available for purchase on site.

Why this will impress your date: Because throwing a frisbee is athletic but it is also laid-back. So you can show your date that you are (importantly) both.

The Inside Game: By showing your date the “back 9″ – an additional 9 holes that are more challenging than the regular 18, but will lead you into some lovely deep dark woods (read: where to MAKE OUT).

Score Extra Points: By bringing a picnic or some drinks. There are plenty of places throughout the course to stop and enjoy the view.

Next Date: Anytime! Sedgley Woods are open to the public year round, during daylight hours. Check SEPTA for your exact route, but the 48 bus will get you within walking distance (the park is at 33rd and Oxford in East Fairmount Park).

The basic idea of FROLF is to get your disc into a metal basket at the far end of each hole. I will not lie. The art of throwing a small plastic disc 50 yards or more through/around multiple trees with the goal of having it land in a small metal basket is not an easy one to master. Or even achieve a medium level of competency in. I learned this quickly, as my first throw veered off sharply from the direction I was aiming for, and flew straight into a bush. My second, third, and fiftieth throws were not much better, but I did develop a special move that my date dubbed the “Samurai” by which I threw the disc vertically like as if I were throwing a knife (good for distance!). But my frustrations quickly dissipated every time I stopped to look around and realize how wonderful it is to just be out in the woods. And make no mistake, this game is played in the woods.

Two ravines cut through the area, which you will have to descend if your disc lands there. Plus there are trees everywhere. Big ones. With lots of leaves and branches. In fact, the course was designed such that the trees serve as natural hazards and each golfer must find their own way around them. Or not… My date’s disc landed nearly flat on top of a lone tree branch in the middle of the course and got stuck. We were throwing sticks and water bottles at it, trying to dislodge it, when two guys from a neighboring hole came to see what was going on. They watched us for a few minutes, then one of them calmly reached into his disc-holster and pulled out one of his many discs. He nailed the frisbee on the second try, knocking it loose. Amazing!

It really is fun to watch the experienced “frolfers,” and the course is designed to challenge serious players and newbies alike. Each hole is unique, both in length and the type and variety of hazards. The layout of the course can be confusing, especially because the holes are so spread out from each other, but a sign posted at the “tee” of every hole shows you the location of the obstacles and the basket. Sometimes it can be hard to find the start of the next tee, but everyone is so happy to be helpful, it is really impossible to get too lost.

It took us about two hours to get through the course, but we were taking our time. By the very end, I was almost getting the hang of it, or at least I wasn’t afraid anymore to just fling the disc will all my might. The worst that would happen would be more traipsing around in the woods, and on a warm spring evening with a cute date, who’s going to complain about that?

On the first Friday of every month, Philadelphia’s art galleries stay open late and welcome everyone — from casual passerby to serious collectors — to come in and peruse their current curations. The aptly dubbed “First Friday” has been happening, rain or shine, since 1991, and has become one of the city’s most visible and popular events. Although historically focused on the 40+ galleries between Front and Vine and Market and 3rd streets in Old City, First Friday open houses are now hosted by galleries all over the city, from Space 1026 in Chinatown to the Projects Gallery in Northern Liberties to Highwire in Fishtown. The best thing about this expansion is that, even though every First Friday shares the same core elements, depending on who’s showing what where, you can have a radically different experience every single time.

How cheap we talkin’: FREE!

Why this will impress your date: Because you can show you are as comfortable around refined oil portraits as you are around avante-garde video art. This is a good thing, I promise.

The Inside Game: If you want to know who’s showing where, need to plan a route, or find galleries in a particular neighborhood, there are a lot of great resources for planning ahead, like this linked list of Philly art galleries. Another great resource is Phrequency’s “DIY First Friday” list, conveniently organized by neighborhood. The Philadelphia Weekly also shares its pick of noteworthy exhibitions each month in its Arts and Culture section.

Score Extra Points: By doing a little homework before hand (see above) and then leading the way. Strolling from gallery to gallery is perfect for hand-holding.

Next date: Friday April 1, 2011! And then the first Friday of every month, all year round (approximately 5-9pm).

Keep reading for highlights from First Fridays past, and where to find the galleries that still have free booze!

The First Friday experience offers a wide range of environments for art appreciators from all over the spectrum. From the huge, almost museum-like Trust Gallery at 249 Arch Street, to the upstart collaborative Stupid Easy at 307 Market Street, there is something to engage and interest everybody.

Work by PJ Smalley at Stupid Easy

If you want to play art collector for a night, stick to Old City bastions like the Wexler Gallery and 3rd Street Gallery (on 2nd). A fun game to play with your date is to pick out, from every gallery, which piece you would take home, where you would hang it, and why. (These are also the galleries to head to in the dead of summer, as some of the more DIY spaces don’t have AC).

Although the posh and polished venues are more visible, seeking out smaller, newer, and less established galleries can be a particularly rewarding experience. For example, when I went to check out a friend’s piece in a collaborative show at Space 1026 a few months ago, Iended up catching a captivating electronic music set by Zomes (e.g. Daniel Higgs from Lungfish). True, the drinks weren’t free, but I didn’t mind paying $2 for a beer which went, in part, to support the gallery.

Meanwhile, nearby artist collective Vox Populi is a great place to explore if you’re not in the mood for wandering the streets. With several stories of studio space hosting openings on First Fridays, this warehouse is chock full of experimental art and artists working largely with newer mediums like scultpure and video. It’s also where to find the after-party: First Friday’s at Vox Populi stay open to 11.

Lobster Mac n Cheese from Continental

Finally, don’t overlook non-traditional sites when planning your route. Although the Drink Philly headquarters don’t generally function as an art gallery, DP supports emerging artists by lending their ample wall space to the cause on First Fridays. As a regular contributor to DP, I have been to more than one of these events, and I have been impressed by how well-attended and fun they are. In addition to showcasing under-represented artists on the walls of their second-floor office space at 209 Chestnut Street, Drink Philly’s First Friday events include live music and a featured bar/restaurant offering complimentary food and (obviously) drinks to attendees(bring ID!). Past event partners have included Continental, Tria, and Triumph Brewery. If you are interested in the food, get there early (it goes fast!), but if you’re just looking for a good party with a laid-back and diverse crowd, feel free to come late!

Whatever the artsy atmosphere you are looking for, you can find it somewhere in this city on First Friday. Particularly lovely in the spring and fall months, First Fridays are a chance to wander the streets at dusk, mingle with artists, collectors and other curious folks, and appreciate how diverse and active Philly’s art scene really is. And with art being the reliable and provoking conversation starter that it is, First Fridays are a particularly good choice for couples on those first few dates.

It’s not a bad way to meet new people, either.

The scene at DP HQ

My date’s stats:

Blog: PhilaDate — Hot Spots for Great Dates in Illadel!

Age: Started blogging in October 2010.

Likes: Walking the city, singing, jazz and blues, and being the go-to source for her friends (especially her guy friends) for date ideas sure to impress the ladies.

Dislikes: Negative Feedback. (Who doesn’t?)

Little Known Fact: Also writes Songs That Won’t Make You Vomit, where she details the ups and downs of her dating life as it relates to, and reminds her of favorite songs.

Favorite Cheap Date: Brunch at Fitzwater Café.

Meg Mirzoff is a 27 year old “self proclaimed dating pro” and the author of PhilaDate, a relatively new (October 2010) blog that highlights fun date spots culled from Meg’s own extensive experience with both dating and Philadelphia. A lifelong area resident, her twitter profile quips positively that “Philly is a hotbed for the singles… you just gotta put yourself out there!” And that is exactly what Meg did when she agreed to meet me for a blind date after I pitched my I’m Seeing Other Blogs idea to her via email.

Of course, as soon as we met I realized that Meg really never had a moment’s hesitation – a spirit of adventure is just a part of who she is. Outgoing and enthusiastic, her fun-loving personality comes across in her blog as well. For example, for a date with “heat” she recommends following a meal of tacos with a night out dancing at a salsa club, and she isn’t afraid of proposing ideas for a 24-hour long date (for some “serious” quality time).

Her idea for our Cheap Date was equally adventuresome: an afternoon Busker-hunting in and around Suburban Station, followed by drinks at Village Whiskey. For those that don’t know (I didn’t), “Busking” is the act of performing in public while soliciting tips or gratuities (i.e. passing the hat). Those engaged in Busking are called “Buskers,” also known as street performers, street musicians, minstrels, or troubadours. I’ve passed by countless such performers before − on South Street, in Rittenhouse, and in the subway stations – but it hadn’t occurred to me that intentionally seeking out these performances could make for a highly entertaining afternoon and a great cheap date.

How cheap we talkin’: $1-5 in tips for the Buskers; Approx. $6 for a beer at Village Whiskey.

Why this will impress your date: Not only does Busking have a long history dating back to at least the 1860′s, but today’s Buskers have their own culture involving unspoken but understood rules and customs about who gets to play when, and where.

Score Extra Points: By ordering tater tots to share at Village Whiskey. They are only $3 and they are delicious.

The Inside Game: All Buskers are entertainers, but not all are equally entertaining. For a nice profile of various Philly Buskers and their stomping grounds, check out this article from Penn music blog God Save the Beat, or this blog by local Busker David Richenbacher.

Next Date: Anytime! But Saturday and Sunday afternoons are a pretty safe bet at Suburban Station, as well as early evenings weeknights (rush hour).

If you or your date are into architecture, Suburban Station at 1600 JFK Boulevard is a worthy destination in and of itself for its classic pink and black art deco facade. All Septa regional rail lines stop here, so it’s a major hub of travel in and out of the city. Meg and I wandered around the mezzanine level and encountered our first Busker there, a solo flautist. It was mid-December and he was playing a delicate rendition of Silent Night. We were the only two people who had stopped to watch him at that point, and stalking him with my camera from across the way, Meg joked it seemed like something out of Animal Planet — the Busker in his natural habitat. This got us laughing, and the gentleman took a break between songs to talk to us about the adamantly pro-stance he’d taken on playing religious Christmas Carols that year. After leaving a few dollars in his flute case, we wandered on to see what else we would happen upon.

There weren’t any other Buskers underground that day, although according to this piece by the Philly Inquirer, on another afternoon we might have run across talents such as folk songwriter Cassendre Xavier or singer John Sutton. We may have cheated a bit with our second street musician find – a Saxaphone Quartet playing on the stage set up for the Christmas Village at City Hall – but we enjoyed it anywayas they were talented and fun to watch.

From City Hall we walked back to Village Whiskey at 118 South 20th street. We had intended to take advantage of their popular Saturday afternoon happy hour, but found out they had recently abandoned it (although the special menu is still up on their website advertising $3 bar snacks, $4 drafts and $5 wines — a definite bargain, so I hope they reprise it eventually). Without the happy hour offerings, Village Whiskey does not really make for a cheap date (unless you are prepared to limit yourself to one drink). In our case, having spent the last half hour or so outside, enjoying the warm atmosphere was worth enduring the self-imposed limitation.

Narrow and dim, with painted tin ceilings and a wide wooden bar, Village Whiskey is cozy bordering on claustrophobic. Their tight leather booths looked like they would be good for eye contact, and for brushing knees under the table, although due our impatience to be inside, Meg and I took seats at a small counter in the back.

Over drinks and a shared order of tots, Meg told me a little more about herself and her hopes for her blog. She loves Philadelphia and hopes to show people, especially her friends who live and work in the suburbs, the kinds of food, culture, and nightlife that the city has to offer. Her sophisticated knowledge of the city and her enthusiasm for its possibilities shines through in PhilaDate, even in its early stages. And while her date ideas aren’t always “cheap” by Cheap Date standards, they are definitely inventive and fun. Just like my date with Meg.

Don't miss the chance to share tots at Village Whiskey!

Now that Baltimore Avenue’s $1 Dollar Stroll series is done for the winter, why not head down to South Street instead? That’s what my date and I did on a recent afternoon, and as it turns out, this underappreciated thoroughfare has lots to see and do, for next to nothing. We checked out artwork on the walls in the Bean Café, had a competition for who could find the most hilarious album cover in the fifty-cent record bins at Repo Records, made friends with the store cat at Mineralistic, browsed shops with everything from edible underwear to x-rated comic books, and stuffed ourselves with South street must-haves: slices from Lorenzo’s and ice cream (well, frozen yoghurt) from Phileo.

How cheap we talkin’: $2.75 for slices, $2 for coffee or tea, $5-7 for yoghurt (it’s sold by weight – so be careful not to overdo it!)

Why this will impress your date: Because South Street is an iconic Philly attraction that has been referenced by everyone from the Dead Milkmen to Boys II Men.

Wait for it……around 50 seconds in…Yes!

The Inside Game: Do not try this within 2 hours after an Eagles or Phillies win. (Unless getting shoved around by crowds of cheering fans and possibly getting thrown up on is your idea of romance).

Score Extra Points: By buying your date a little gift along the way, like a $1 trinket from the dispensers in Atomic City Comics, or a folkart tchotske from Eyes Gallery.

Next date: Anytime, day or night! Lorenzo’s serves until at least 4am most nights, the Bean Café stays open until midnight every night, and Phileo is open until 11 on weekends and 10 most weekdays.

We started our stroll at the intersection of South and 7th streets. The first thing that caught our eye was the Society Hill Loan pawn shop, whose large storefront window is filled with instruments, electronics, and other treasures. Inside, long glass counters house all sorts of jewelry and watches, there’s a whole wall of shiny trumpets, and dozens of guitars dangle from the ceiling like a giant musical chandelier.

We eavesdropped on some bargains-in-the-making as we shuffled around the huge pile of amps in the middle of the room, and just marveled at the sheer amount of stuff.

Next, we went to Atomic City Comics at 640 South Street. In addition to comic books, Atomic City has a large selection of graphic novels, animated movies, t-shirts and toys, which were all fun to browse through. And don’t miss the Adult Book section in the back, displaying plastic-wrapped books of hand-drawn porn. Naughty illustrators! There were also some obscure arcade games there, although according to a sign on one of them, they weren’t allowed to have any more than three on at a time without a special license. Weird.

When we tired of comics, we wandered into the Bean Café at 615 South street, a tiny coffee shop with a cozy bohemian vibe and a rotating display of local artists’ work, gallery-style, on its walls. You can pick up a coffee or tea there to go, or sit for a while and soak in the atmosphere of “the toughest coffee shop on South Street.”

Just past the Bean Café on the side of the firehouse at the corner of 6th street check out the huge Mural Mapping Courage honoring the legacy of W.E.B. Dubois. There’s more art to see across at the Arts on South Gallery. They do other cool events too, like a Fourth Friday Art Walk, that are worth looking into. We also popped into Retrospect at 534 South street, a giant Goodwill that has been carefully culled to cater to vintage lovers. If you’re not looking for clothes, it’s also fun to browse the housewares section in the back.

Repo Records was our next stop, a hip used CD and record store at 538 South Street that stocks mostly indie, punk, and new-wave. There’s a listening station (with a 10 minute limit) where you can compare thoughts on new records and staff picks, and a musty basement of 50 cent record crates. My date and I had a great time flipping through the vinyl looking for the best cover art. It was pretty hard to choose.

Another fun thing to do on South Street is to pop into any one of the sex shops en route. We had fun “poking” around in Condom kingdom, stocked with pecker cake pans, penis pasta, vibrators, erotic dice, and of course, condoms. This kind of detour is the fastest way to tell how uptight your date really is. Some things just aren’t for everyone.

After making some key discoveries at the Kingdom, we headed over to Phileo for dessert. This place lets you choose (and dispense!) your own yoghurt from over a dozen flavors, and then add your own toppings. It’s sold by the ounce, so beware – those heavy Reeses Pieces chunks can add up fast! The yoghurt comes in both sweet and tart varities, from red velvet cake to lycee fruit, and toppings include everything from Pomegranite seeds to cheesecake bites. Aptly described as having a “futuristic atmosphere” by the Hungry Hungry Food Bro, there’s a nice, clean counter at the front where you can sit and watch the traffic (both cars and people) on South Street.

After finishing our yoghurt, we kept heading east, passing the two child-sized knights of armor outside Tiffany City Lighting at 343 South street (it’s pretty cool inside, too), and Mineralistic, a jewelry and art store whose main attraction, for me, was the lazy store cat strategically positioned on the countertop – for maximum attention, according to the shop owner.

Our final stop was Lorenzo’s where we dutifully waited for our giant, greasy, and unbeatably cheap $2.75 slices of pizza. I do have some complaints about Lorenzo’s: You can only get cheese (they don’t do toppings), they don’t have any seating, and the sauce is a little on the sweet side for my taste, but, it’s hard to complain about $2.75 for a slice of pizze the size of your head, and they get bonus points for being open until the wee hours. Plus, it’s just so quintessentially South Street.

And yes, South Street is still bascially an outdoor mall often overrun with angsty pre-teens and (sometimes more angsty) tourists. But it was still fun to immerse ourselves in it for an afternoon and, as my date so rightly observed, its punk rock charm is still there in bits and pieces, if you just know where to look.

As my date and I recently discovered, there are a whole date’s worth of cool (and cheap!) things to do, see, and eat in the small area of Center City between Walnut and Locust streets to the north and south, and 6th and 8th streets to the east and west. After checking out the gorgeous Tiffany glass mural in the Curtis Center, we went to Lore’s Chocolates, a gourmet chocolatier, and spent at least half an hour picking out a half pound box of chocolates to enjoy in nearby Washington Square. On our way to the park, we stumbled across even more hidden treasures: a curious little troll, and a fun, no-frills, bulk nut and candy store too.

How cheap we talkin’: Approximately $11 for a half pound of chocolate from Lore’s. $2-$5 per pound for nuts or candy from Nuts to You.

Why this will impress your date: You can whip out all kinds of interesting facts after reading this fascinating account of the making of this majestic mural, by Kim Sajet, Senior Vice President of Museum and Public Programs at PAFA.

The Inside Game: If you or your date doesn’t like chocolate, Nuts to You is a great alternative for snack fare. So is the fruit cart on 7th – for only $6 they will jam pack a container full of melon, strawberries, pineapple, grapes and mango for you, and even throw in a banana. They also make fantastic smoothies for less than $5.

Score Extra Points: By letting your date eat the last chocolate.

Next date: Weekdays or Saturday morning. Note: Lore’s closes at 5pm and the Curtis Center closes at 6pm. Saturdays, the Curtis center is only open 10-1pm.

We started off at the Curtis Center, a beautiful and imposing building designed in 1910 to headquarter the Curtis Publishing Company. The atrium on the 6th street side is also home to a gorgeous Tiffany mural that was constructed by commission and has been described as “perhaps the finest Tiffany mural in the world.” The sparkling, verdant scene is titled “The Dream Garden,” and was designed by Louis C. Tiffany based on a Maxfield Parrish landscape. Made up of 100,00 pieces of hand-fired Favril glass in over 260 iridescent color tones, it measures 15′x49′ and is comprised of 24 panels that took six months to install in 1915-1916. According to the Atlas Obscura, it is arguably the largest Tiffany piece in the world, and until 2007, was the largest glass mural in the country (it was surpassed by the Wing Lung Bank Mural in Alhambra, CA). It is a truly stunning masterpiece of craftsmanship that glows and glimmers for as long as you look at it.

The mural was designated a “historic object” by the Philadelphia Historical Commission in 1998 after the piece was put up for sale and casino magnate Steve Wynn attempted to purchase it. It is now owned by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and remains completely free and open to the public.

When we finished taking in the mural, we walked through the Curtis Center to the 7thStreet exit. The interior of the building is flanked with palm trees and features a sprawling marble fountain that is plenty impressive in its own right.

Once outside, we turned right and walked up to Lore’s Chocolates at 34 S.7th street. This tiny shop is wall-to-wall chocolates, which are handmade on the premises, including milk, dark, and white varieties. It’s $17.95 a pound (although a half-pound is plenty for two) and you can mix and match your perfect assortment. We spent a good half hour considering all the options (Three marizpan or four? Dark or milk chocolate turtles?) before letting the woman at the counter know what we wanted and watching her assemble our carefully edited selection into a flat white box.

With chocolates in hand, we turned south again on 6th street. All of a sudden, a strange little fellow caught my eye: Ray, the Security Troll. Stationed in the front window of 106 6th street, I couldn’t help but look fondly on this ugly little creature.

Ray the Security Troll

There is something very dear about him, and my date and I spent a few minutes pondering the story that must lie behind his presence there.

We continued on towards Washington Square park. When crossing the street, we noticed a store at 721 Walnut called Nuts to You, and decided to check it out. With the air of an old-fashioned general store, it had painted wooden shelves stacked floor to ceiling with bags of nuts and nut mixes, bulk candy, and other snacks like salted peas, popcorn, and dried peaches. We didn’t end up buying anything, but it was definitely fun to look around.

We finally made it to our designated chocolate gorging spot: Washington Square, a small but peaceful plot of green between Chestnut and Spruce. Although it has several attractions, including a statue of George Washington and the memorial to an unknown solider, the park doesn’t seem to get quite as much foot traffic as the park behind Independence Hall, which is across the street. It also has the advantage of having most of its pathways lined with benches, so it’s a nice park to sit in, even if you don’t have a blanket.

There was something distinctly satisfying about digging into an entire box of chocolates, especially while enjoying beautiful weather in a park. Of course, by that time we had already forgotten which confection was which, so we spent some time biting off corners and trading for our favorites. The hazlenut truffles and chocolate covered grahams were definitely mine. We definitely spoiled our dinners with that indulgence, but it was worth it.

On a Friday night, Old City can sometimes seem a bit overrun by heavy drinkers, flashy dressers, and unruly crowds – not necessarily the most inviting atmosphere for a date. But that’s only if you don’t know where to go (or where not to go). For an Old City date with old-fashioned charm, start with homemade ice cream from Franklin Fountain, then take in the concert and fireworks at Penn’s Landing. (Concert starts at 7:30, fireworks at 9:15). After the big show, head to Sassafras International Cafe (and bar) at 48 S.2nd between Market and Walnut. With painted tin ceilings, a faux fireplace, and international beer list, this intimate and classy joint is a welcoming respite from the mayhem of the club scene. That is, if you can make it past the throngs on the street.

How cheap we talkin’: $5-7pp for ice cream (it gets pricey fast if you opt for the waffle cones like we did!) and $6 for drafts at Sassafras (plus tip!).

Why this will impress your date: Because there is something even more awesome about fireworks when it’s not the Fourth of July.

Score Extra Points: By splurging for the waffle cone at Franklin Fountain. Trust me, it’s worth it.

The Inside Game: There is a full sized couch in the ladies room at Sassafras. And a lock on the door. Just sayin.’

Next Date: Ice cream and drinks are available anytime, but the last Friday for fireworks is September 3, 2010.

On any given summer evening in Philadelphia, it is a safe bet that there will be a line at Franklin Fountain. Although the building is from the turn of the century, this old-fasioned “soda fountain” is a relatively new addition to the neighborhood, having opened its doors in 2004 (you can read more about the history of the Fountain here). Attention was paid to every detail, from the period dresses and shirtwaists worn by the young and friendly staff, to the Victrola radio playing old-timey tunes in the back, to the foot-pump operated water fountain outside.

In addition to ice cream, Franklin Fountain carries an array of nostalgia-inspiring sweets such as Necco Wafers and Violet Candy, and hard to find soda pop brands such as Fentiman’s and Dad’s Root Beer. These diversions are fun to browse, but truly, the ice cream is the main attraction here. My date showed a little more restraint, but I went for broke and ordered two scoops in a waffle cone: Hydrox (e.g. Cookies and Cream - Hydrox was apparently invented in 1908, 4 years before the Oreo) and Black Raspberry (made with real fruit pureé). Both flavors exceeded expectations with their rich and creamy deliciousness. (My date also got Hydrox. It’s just that good).

Our cones lasted us our walk from Franklin Fountain to Penn’s Landing over the Walnut Street bridge. We arrived a little before 9pm, in time to catch the end of the free jazz concert that had been going on at the River Stage since 7:30pm. The ampitheater steps were crowded with people sitting on chairs they had brought —or dancing in the aisles.

We stayed towards the back and found a seat on the edge of one of the fountains there. It turned out to be the perfect spot for the fireworks which started at around 9:15pm behind the Seaport Museum sign. At first the display seemed to be more loud than big, but the finale included all of my favorites (the sunbursts, the streamers, the sparkle showers), and more than made up for the slow start.

The show ended around 9:30pm, and it began to clear out right away. We tried to linger, admiring the lights on the Ben Franklin Bridge and the giant 3-mast ship anchored nearby, but we were shooed out by security guards closing up the park. Not ready to call it a night yet, we headed back into Old City.

This historic 3 masted ship is hauntingly luminous during the fireworks

Walking from the family-friendly scene at Penn’s Landing into the club scene on Walnut street was a little like going from the state fair to a street fair, but Sassafras was the perfect bubble in which to preserve the old-fashioned aesthetic that had permeated our date so far. Romantically lit, authentically decorated, narrow, and cozy, we crowded around a small table in the back and ordered beers from their international list. Although their drinks are not inexpensive, they do have an interesting selection, from Guiness (on tap, $5) to Young’s Double Chocolate Stout (bottle, $6) to something called Spaten Optimator (bottle, $5). Based on my stated affinity for Yuengling, the bartender recommended Fullers ESB lager (bottle, $5.50), which was very tasty indeed. We stayed until the evenings activities caught up with us, and then we wandered home, immune to the noise on the streets, imagining ourselves in a simpler time when ice cream and fireworks could be enough excitement to last a whole year.

The boat ride scene has long been a staple of the romantic film genre (case in point, anyone remember the Chicago Ferry slow-dance scene from My Best Friend’s Wedding?). But truly, what is more romantic than a boat ride? Watching the wind tousle your date’s hair, listening to the waves slap rhythmically against the side of the boat, and exalting in the subtle danger of being so far from solid ground. Didn’t think you could experience this in Philadelphia? Enter the River Link Ferry. For only $7 round trip, my date and I cruised the Delaware across and back, and during our layover in Camden, found a place to enjoy a cold beer near the waterfront.

How cheap we talkin’: $7 for round trip tickets on the River Ferry. $2-4 for beer and optional $4.50 for fries to split.

Why this will impress your date: I talked about the hair tousling, right?

Score extra points: With this move:

Classic.

The inside game: The Camden waterfront has some nice benches and green space to sit. The rest of Camden does not. So for a nicer time (and a cheaper date), maybe skip the beers and bring a picnic instead.

Next date: Anytime! (between Memorial Day and Labor Day). Season regular hours are 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with departures from Philadelphia every hour on the hour beginning at 10:00 a.m. Departures from Camden are every hour on the half hour beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Ferry upper deck

The River Link ferry departs Philadelphia from Penn’s Landing every hour on the hour beginning at 10:00 a.m., and from Camden at Wiggins Park ferry terminal every hour on the half hour beginning at 9:30 a.m (see schedule). We bought our tickets on the Philly side from a freestanding booth just outside the Seaport Museum and boarded the ferry without having a wait. The vessel has two levels, and is wheelchair accessible. The lower deck is fully enclosed, but you can still see outside through the windows along either side.

Ferry lower deck

The upper deck also has seating and partial cover along the sides, but if you move to the front or back of the boat it is standing room only. Once onboard we found our way to the upper deck at the back of the ship, which turned out to be the front when we got going. The ferry left the dock with very little fanfare, save the blowing of a loud horn, but I was glad that there wasn’t an announcer narrating the history of the Delaware River or pointing out this and that along the way. It was nice to be able to hear the soothing hum of water churning underneath the boat and wind whipping around our ears – sounds you don’t hear often on the busy streets of Philadelphia.

The ride itself was only 12 minutes long, but instead of charging straight across, the boat takes a scenic detour up the Delware River — past Penn’s Landing, Dave and Buster’s, and Pier 5 —before turning underneath the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. Our spot on the deck turned out to be the best in the house (er, boat) as it provided an unobstructed views of all the sights on both sides. The views underneath the bridge were especially cool.

When we disembarked at Wiggin’s Park, we found ourselves on a brick path along the Camden waterfront. We followed the path past Adventure Aquarium (at $21.95 per person, definitely not a cheap date) to Market Street, where we turned right and wandered alongside a large parking lot about 2 blocks until we came across a small commerical strip with a Rita’s water ice shop and a bar called Victor’s pub.

As a bar, Victor’s doesn’t have a lot of charm, but it does have outdoor seating facing the waterfront, which was what finally convinced us to go there for a beer instead of to Rita’s for a water ice. Their least expensive beers on tap range from $2.oo for Rolling Rock to $4.00 for Blue Moon. If you’re feeling snackish, they also have several variations of french fries for $4.50 – we ordered some shoestring style with American cheese and crab seasoning, and yes, they were as guilt-inducing as they sound. There was apparently some kind of country music concert happening at the nearby Susquehanna Bank Center ampitheater, because the parking lot across from Victor’s was filled with rowdy tailgaters wearing cowboy boots and hats. We amused ourselves watching them for awhile as we drank our beers, and then headed back toward the marina. There really isn’t a lot to do in Camden if you aren’t there for a specific purpose like seeing a show or a Riversharks game, but it was easy enough to kill a couple hours nursing drinks and wandering around the buildings by the waterfront. On the next half hour, we boarded the ferry for the trip back, found our post at the helm, and enjoyed our second brief, but lovely, ride on the River Link.

Since its renovation in 2006, Franklin Square Park has been transformed into a vibrant amusement park, complete with a carousel, two playgrounds, the impressive and historic Franklin Square Fountain, and the perfect Cheap Date diversion: an 18-hole miniature golf course designed around iconic Philadelphia landmarks like Love Park and the Liberty Bell. After battling it out on the green, my date and I cooled off by getting frosty treats from Square Burger, the park’s freestanding snack stand, and taking them on a stroll (part-way) across the breezy and beautiful Benjamin Franklin Bridge.

How cheap we talkin’: $8 for a round of golf ($7 if you have a Septa pass!)$3.50-$4.75 for a rootbeer float or shake from Square Burger.

Why this will impress your date: By showing that you can be a gracious winner. Or loser.

Score extra points: By offering to be the one to keep score. (Do not literally score extra points by cheating).

The inside game: Access to the Ben Franklin Bridge closes at 9pm, and is not reputed to be the safest after dark, so make sure you are finished walking well before sundown.

Next date: Anytime! Well, almost. The course is open from 10am to 9pm every day May 28th through September 7th. Then, through October 23rd, you can golf Tuesday through Saturday 9am-9pm (although from October 1st – 31st the hours Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are 11am-8pm). The course is also open Columbus Day, and November 26th-28th, 5-8pm. December 4th-19th golf Saturday and Sunday 5-8pm. December 27th-31st golf every day 5-8pm. Then the course will close until daily hours resume March 26th. Whew! Did you get all that???

The course (as reviewed by uwishunu in 2007) is located in the northernmost area of Franklin Square park. From the gate, it doesn’t look like there could be 18 mini golf greens back there, but there are! Each hole incorporates oversized replicas of Philly monuments as obstacles and design elements, mostly successfully. The Art Museum hole was one of my favorites, having to putt the ball up the Rocky Stairs and into a chute. By contrast, the simple Chinatown arch in the middle of an otherwise straight shot was still cool, but a little less challenging.

Tiny houses!

The is course is clearly designed for whole-family fun — most of the holes are pretty straightforward 2-par putts – but that didn’t keep my date and I from making a sport of it. The game also easily lends itself to both kinds of flirting – the ego boosting kind (“Wow, that was an amazing shot! You’re so good at this!”), and the affectionately teasing kind (“Whoa, try to keep the Love in the park, ok?”). Things can still get heated though: the couple ahead of us was taking it so seriously, when they ended in a tie they circled back to putt a tie-breaking round (she won).

It wasn’t overcrowded, and we played through all 18 holes relatively quickly, although the few times we did have to wait, the course itself made for easy conversation (“Have you ever been to the Liberty Bell?”).

After tallying our scores and engaging in more ego- boosting/affectionate ribbing regarding the outcome, we stopped in at Square Burger, the Stephen Starr owned burger and shake shack that services the park. Reviews of the burgers have been mixed, but the thing to get there is indisputably the Tasty Cake Shake. I ordered a root beer float, which was still pretty good — the vanilla ice cream was the perfect creamy consistency, but it’s a difficult beverage to take in with a straw - even an extra-wide Bubble Tea straw.

Floats are nice, but shoulda had the Cake Shake...

We took our treats to the southeast corner of the park and crossed 6th street to get to the pedestrian entrance to the historic Benjamin Franklin Bridge (it was once the longest suspension bridge in the world). There are walkways on both sides of the bridge, but only one side at a time is open to foot-traffic. As you might expect, the walk grades gently uphill until the halfway point, and then down again. It’s by no means an arduous climb, but you will feel it if you’re moving any faster than a leisurely stroll. It’s a long 1.8 mile walk to reach the other side; my date and I went about 3/4 of the way before turning back, stopping for awhile to watch the Riversharks game at Campbell’s field stadium from our “nosebleed” seats on the bridge. We also took in the sweeping views of the Delaware river and Camden waterfront and Aquarium, but the best views are of the Philly skyline on the way back, because you know you are heading home.

Every Wednesday until August 24th, as part of its Summer Nights Music Series, the Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology hosts a live music series in its verdant garden from 5-8pm. The museum is located at 3260 South Street, at the intersection of Spruce and 33rd, in the shadow of the Palestra on Penn’s campus. Entry is pay-what-you-want, and beverages (alcoholic and non) are available for a donation. The lush and stately garden makes you feel like you have been transported away from the city to another time and place – making it the perfect setting for the diverse musical acts featured by the series, which come from all over the globe. My date and I had a lovely time there, wandering leisurely among the small crowd of students, families, and professionals unwinding after work, taking in both the music and the museum, which remains open to visitors for the duration of the event.

How cheap we talkin’: Your $5 entry fee includes museum admission. (It’s free for Penn Museum members and PennCard holders). Drinks are provided with donation.

Why this will impress your date: Completed in 1915, the Chinese Rotunda at the museum is one of the largest unsupported masonry domes in the United States, housing one of the finest collections of monumental Chinese art in the country, covering some 4,000 years of Chinese history.

Score extra points: By knowing the difference between congas and bongos.

The inside game: If you get there early enough, there might be some Yuengling available.

Next date: Wednesdays 5-8pm, through August 25th, 2010.

The night that we were there, an eclectic fusion group called Animus played. We could hear the music from the street well before entering the museum courtyard through its imposing iron gate, but upon entering the grounds what first caught our eye was a small group gathered around a man hunched over a long trough, whose watery surface he was speckling with paint. The man’s name was Richard Aldorasi and he was making silk scarves with an Ottoman/Islamic art technique called “marbling.” And if you wanted, for $15 you could pick out the color and design and watch him create one for you right on the spot.

We watched for awhile, then moved over to the drink table. For an event at prestigious Penn University, the selection left much to be desired, particularly in the beer department. Bud Lime, Penn? Really?

After turning our noses up at the drink selection, we wandered through the garden and sat down on the steps to watch Animus. The group was comprised of only five musicians, but at least ten instruments: We spotted accordian, flute, congas, bongos, djembe, oud, a full drum kit, gourds, guitar, electric bass, and additional unidenitfied percussion. It was a complete melange of world styles and influences – at times the rhythms rose to an intensity that felt incongruous with the somewhat subdued atmosphere at the event, but I think that grogginess was the fault of the oppressive heat that night. Walking around was hard enough, let alone dancing, so most of the attendees remained seated at tables shaded by umbrellas, or along the back wall under the trees. However, there was one woman dressed in a long skirt adorned with bells who mesmerized everyone watching her with the fluid motions of her hips and arms as she twirled and shimmied through the entire set.

When the band took a break, we wandered into the museum. The Penn Museum is a world class museum and research institution that houses over 1 million archaeological and ethnographic artifacts from all over the world. The building itself is a remarkable cavernous Beaux Arts structure, that is apparently only one-third of the size of its original design. Only the third floor collection was open to visitors that evening, but it contained Chinese, Japanese, Greek, and Egyptian artifacts fitting for the Silk Road theme. (The Silk Road, as my date impressively explained, is an ancient network of trade routes that stretched 4,000 miles from Europe to Asia). The dominant feature in each of the rooms was its large statues, including a giant bust of an Egyptian labeled simply: “Head of a Colossal Statute of a King.” Indeed. When we reached the Upper Egyptian Gallery we were momentarily stunned thinking we were looking at the Rosetta stone, but it turned out to be a replica. However, the museum did have several very real mummies on display, and it was more than a little creepy to be wandering around the museum’s silent galleries at dusk, surrounded by stone coffins, ancient funerary objects, and mummified remains. I for one, was glad to get back outside where we took in the last few minutes of the performance before we headed home, visions of silk dancing in our heads.

There is something undeniably romantic about curling up on a blanket, sharing some candy, and maybe

There is something undeniably romantic about curling up on a blanket, sharing some candy, and maybe a brown-bagged bottle of cold beer, and taking in an outdoor movie on a hot summer night. Every Wednesday through September 1st, the Headhouse District Indie Film Series screens an independent film in Headhouse Square (2nd street between Pine and Lombard). All films in the series have a connection to Philly (whether the film was shot in the area or the filmmakers are natives) and the directors are usually on hand to discuss their films or answer questions after the show. If you don’t want to take a chance on an unknown indie flick, Thursday evenings through August 26, the River Stage at Penn’s Landing (Columbus Boulevard at Chestnut) also hosts a series of “Screenings Under the Stars” featuring popular films, such as Star Trek and, this Thursday July 15th, the Secret Lives of Bees. Importantly, however, both of these screenings are located within walking distance of the Sweettooth Candy Storeon 4th and Bainbridge, a delightful old-fashioned bulk candy store (reviewed recently by uwishunu), where we had fun assembling a grab bag of treats before the film.

How cheap we talkin’: Per person, $3.50 for candy at Sweettooth. Optional $4.50 for falafel at Maoz and/or $2 beer or beverage.

Why this will impress your date: Because you can bond over your shared love of snowcaps and other obscure confectionaries.

Score extra points: By bringing a couple of cold brews, cleverly disguised, ofcourse, in brown paper bags.

The inside game: If you forget to bring a blanket, Headhouse has thick pillars along both sides to lean up against, which may offer a more comfortable position than indian style on cement.

Next date: Every Wednesday at Headhouse Square through September 1st. Every Thursday (except July 29th) at Penn’s Landing (Through August 26th, 2010).

Upon entering Sweettooth, my date and I literally became like kids in a candy store. We ran up and down the brightly tiled aisles, exclaiming and reminiscing to each other over every favorite candy we’ve ever had, from sour cherry cola bottle gummies to rock candy crystals to kookaburra red licorice (a hard to find personal favorite of mine). The candy is $2.47 for 1/4 pound, and it’s easy for your eyes to be bigger than your stomach. We got about a half pound between the two of us (costing about $7 total), and it was more than enough. I think a good rule of thumb would be not to get a bag of candy bigger than your fist…

After examining every single jellybean and jawbreaker on the shelves, we headed north to South street and then east toward Headhouse Square. (Had we been going to Penn’s landing, we would have kept going east on South Street, then across Columbus Avenue). Being that it was around dinner time, we agreed we were hungry for a little more than just candy and decided to get sandwiches at Maoz vegetarian, a quick-order falafel restaurant (and global chain) located at 248 South Street. Maoz is fun in much the same way the candy store was – there are an array of different hearty salad toppings on offer, and you can assemble your own sandwich however you like. The “junior Maoz” falafel sandwich is only $3.68 (and still plenty big), but if you don’t like falafel you can also just fill your pita from their salad bar for $3.75, or add hummus for $.70 more. They are a bit messy though, so don’t forget to grab napkins.

We took our sandwiches and candy to the block-long covered market structure that defines Headhouse Square and caught the last few minutes of The Great Unknown, who played a set before the film. Featuring romantic, slightly distorted vocals, a banjo, and minimalist drums (the entire kit consisted of a bass drum, a snare, and two symbols), they played a soothing kind of Wilco-esque alt country music that was fitting for the setting sun.

Following their set, we set out a blanket on the ground in front of the screen that had been inflated for the projection. It’s not a huge screen, but it’s big enough for the space. There were a small handful of people already gathered, and as it got closer to the 8pm showtime, more arrived. Some people even brought their own lawn chairs. We didn’t have that luxury, but our simple groundcover was cozy enough. The film shownig that night was a coming of age story with some thought-provoking moments, but in the hit-or-miss world of low budget filmmaking, we agreed it was a miss. But we were able to laugh about it (a little too loud probably, in some places), and after all, it’s often the missteps on dates that make for the best inside jokes (inside jokes, in turn, being one of the most fun things about dating).

All in all, it was a perfect summer evening date - with candy to spare.

Lining up for $1 treats! The stretch of commerce along Baltimore Avenue between 50th and 43rd street

Lining up for $1 treats!

The stretch of commerce along Baltimore Avenue between 50th and 43rd streets in West Philly offers a fantastic variety of restaurants, stores, and services. At least, that is the conclusion I came to after checking out the Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll on a recent date. Tonight (July 8th) and again on August 12th, from 5:30 until 8:30 pm, participating merchants will be showcasing their wares and enticing passerby with special, one-night-only offerings for $1. Starting off with $1 pizza slices at Dock Street Brewing Co. and ending with $1 ice cream cones at Milk & Honey (with $1 theater tickets and cat toys in between), we had a great time: discovered some new places to put on the we-should-come-back-here-sometime list, picked up some free books (that we probably should have just put down), and ended the evening by watching the fireflies light up nearby Clark Park.

How cheap we talkin’: With 15 vendors at last count, you could spend up to the budget on $1 coffee, cookies, sandwiches, beer, records, clothes, etc. We spent about $8 each, and still ended the night full and happy.

Why this will impress your date: Because of the confidence with which you can pick up the tab and say, ”I got this.”

Score extra points: By coming up with a game to play to pass the time while waiting in line. Rock, paper, scissors is a good one. Or I-spy.

The inside game: If there is something you know you want to try, go there first. In some places supplies were limited.

Next date: The 2010 season is over. Hopefully they will reprise this event in 2011!

As early as 5:00, the crowds started to thicken along Baltimore Avenue. With events like this, lines are inevitable, and if you want things to run smoothly it’s important to have a strategy. Of course, this goes for the vendors too; our first stop, Dock Street Brewing Co. at 701 S.50th street was clearly lacking in line management strategy. After milling about for awhile in what appeared to be a takeaway line (er, mob), we grabbed a table instead, hoping that sit-down slices would still be $1. They were! The place was clearly overwhelmed with demand, and we waited a good while for our order, but the pizza came out hot and fresh and it was worth the wait.

After we devoured our pizza, we headed south on Baltimore, browsing $1 items set out flea-market style on card tables set up on the sidewalk. The lines for $1 tofu skewers at the quaint Vientiane Café and for $1 pastries at The Gold Standard Café proved longer than our patience, but we walked right up to the table set out by the Curio Theatre Company for what I thought was the best deal on the street – $1 tickets to preview performances of any show in their forthcoming season. Our attention was next captured by the array of free books outside of the A-Space, a collectively run anarchist community center and art gallery at 4722 Baltimore Avenue. Apparently, A Space has free stuff outside everyday, but it was still fun to paw through their selection and compare finds.

We saw people enjoying $1 cans of beer outside the Ethiopian restaurant Queen of Sheba, but decided instead to try the tiny vegetarian eatery and juice bar down the block at 4505 Baltimore Avenue, Atiya Ola’s Spirit First Foods. We were not disappointed. Their $1 raw food sampler was light, crunchy, and very flavorful.

Delicious raw food from from Atiya Ola's

Finally, feeling full but wanting to end the night with something sweet, we headed over to Milk & Honey Market at 4435 Baltimore Avenue. There was a wait, but unlike Dock Street, these guys appeared to have crowd management down to a fine art. The line weaved quickly through the market and around to the counter, where two diligent scoopers presented us with a choice of vanilla, chocolate, or coffee – cup or cone. We took our cones across the street to the part of Clark Park affectionately known as “the bowl” and watched people, dogs, and lightning bugs for awhile. Then the sun went down and the mosquitos showed up and we knew it was time to go home.

Let's hear it for ice cream!

Rittenhouse Square park, between 18th and 19th streets on Walnut, is a tree-filled haven of green in

Rittenhouse Square park, between 18th and 19th streets on Walnut, is a tree-filled haven of green in the middle of Center City’s busy downtown shopping district. It is also a centrally located and easily accessible place to bring a blanket and some snacks and have a picnic. But before setting up camp, stop in across the street at Barnes and Noble and pick out some fun magazines to read from or a book of crossword puzzles to work on together after you get bored of people and/or cloud watching.

How cheap we talkin’: $30 or less. Magazines, $12-$15, for 3. Snacks: $15 or less.

Why this will impress your date: Good elocution skills are sexy.

The Inside Game: Cherries are portable and delicious, but they are not an ideal date food, because, well, they inevitably involve spitting. Also, do not picnic on fleece blankets if you can help it. Apparently they generate a lot of heat (and not the good kind).

Score Extra Points: By bringing something homemade. My date surprised me with fresh guacamole (my favorite!), and it was delicious.

Next date: Anytime.

The day we went to Rittenhouse it was sunny and clear, but not too humid. It was still hot though, and after biking to the park, I was glad for the air conditioning inside Barnes and Noble. Their magazine section is on the first floor, just to the left as you walk in, and is well stocked with magazines for any and all interests. I learned a lot about my date just perusing the aisles – The New Yorker? Yes. People? Yes. Suduko? No. We finally settled on three: an issue of Nylon (for the photography), Harper’s (for the fiction), and Star (for the hell of it).

Then we trekked back across the street and found a semi-shaded spot to set up camp. As we leisurely snacked our way through our grapes and cheese and pretzel chips, we flipped through our magazines, taking turns reading interesting tidbits aloud to each other, and pointing out funny ads or cool photos.

My date suggested we play a game where we look at a photo spread of two people and make up what we think they would be saying to each other, sort of like MST3K in stills. Highly amusing. But not as highly amusing as the game we played after that, which was to lay on our backs and make up stories from shapes the clouds, all while pretending to have the most pretentious British accents. I doubt we fooled the group of Spaniards who sat down next to us (and I mean RIGHT next to us, which was a little irritating, given that there was more than enough space that was not a mere six inches away) but we did crack ourselves up.

When we finally ran out of snacks and steam, we packed up. Even though Rittenhouse is in the middle of the city, after spending a few hours amongst the trees it was still a little bit of a shock to walk off the grass and back onto the sidewalk. Or, as the British would say, the “pavement.”

Come summertime, it seems like every Philadelphia neighborhood throws down block party style with a neighborhood festival or street fair. Providing a full day of live music to listen to, vendors’ wares to peruse, yummy treats to try, and in most cases, green space to camp out on, these events make great dates because there’s a lot to see, a lot to do, and a little something for everybody.

How cheap we talkin’: FREE plus the (optional) cost of food, which could be very little, but could run you up to the budget if you decide you just have to get ice cream, and kettle corn, and funnel cake…

Why this will impress your date: Because you also look good in daylight.

The Inside Game: Bring your own water. Bottled water will be overpriced, and you could spend your whole day in line for it. Also, take public transportation or walk if you can – parking at and around these festivals can be a huge hassle.

Score Extra Points: Meet up with your friends or your date’s friends and make some introductions. These kinds of events are a great, low-key way to casually see how your date mingles with a crowd. Or, more specifically, with your crowd.

Next date: There are festivals all year long! I will continue to update this post as I hear about more festivals, so check back! In the meantime, mark your (2010) calendar for:

The festival we went to was Fishtown’s Shadfest held at Penn Treaty park on N. Delaware Avenue at the corner of East Columbia and Beach Streets. I had never been to Penn Treaty before, but was pleasantly surprised by how lovely it was, with its wide swatch of well-maintained grass, sizeable playground (which was overrun with kids), and direct access to the Delaware River (via a rocky embankment). The whole park faces the waterfront, and there’s a great view of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge from the shoreline. There is also a very cool looking, but defunct, industrial building whose tall narrow smokestacks overlook the park, like guardians.

Shadfest featured music all day, various vendors of crafts and food and local business information, and a moon bounce (just for kids, unfortunately). We were disappointed in our attempt to procure the Shadfest’s famous “Shadburger” (prepared by Johnny Brenda’s special for the event – and they apparently run out every year), so we wandered through the stalls looking for our lunch. Instead we had some pretty tasty veggy burgers and wraps, hot off the griddle, which were about $6, and iced tea, $2. There were also vendors selling more traditional festival fare, like hot dogs and funnel cakes. And of course, the Mr. Softie truck was there.

Birdie Busch live at Shadfest

After eating, we lounged in the grass digesting, and listening to the bands and dog/people watching (ok, mostly we were just mesmerized by these two girls twirling hula hoops with their toes). We also managed a game of catch, despite the high traffic on the green. The weather eventually turned, cutting the afternoon short, but what a pleasant afternoon it was.

Every Tuesday evening throughout the summer (or as long as the season lasts) the folks down at the Piazza in Northern Liberties throw the big game up on the big screen. Whether you are a huge Phillies fan (because you live in Philadelphia and therefore pretty much have to be), or are feigning interest (because you didn’t always live in Philadelphia but it’s too early in the relationship to quibble about sports), this weekly event – when coupled with some take-out slices from nearby Pizza Rustica – is a downright pleasant way to spend a summer evening.

How cheap we talkin’: $5-10 pp (depending on how hungry/thirsty you are). Figure $3 or less per slice for pizza, and $2, give or take, for beverages. Optional post-pizza treat, about $2.

Why this will impress your date: Because baseball is America’s pastime, dammit.

The Inside Game: Avoid your dinner getting cold by getting drinks first and asking for your pizza extra hot.

Score Extra Points: By treating your date to a frozen dessert. The Pink Dolphin market in the Piazza (1001 N. 2nd) has Klondike bars for $1.75, or split a pint of Ben & Jerry’s for $5

Next date: Every Tuesday night, for the win!

I met my date at Pizza Rustica which is located at 903 North 2nd Street. This cozy brick-oven pizzeria carries a good selection of by-the-slice pies.

My date’s favorites were the Chicken Chile Verde – a Mexican twist on pizza finished with cilantro – and the “perfectly tangy” BBQ Chicken pizza. I was partial to the plain, which had a well-balanced spicy-sweet tomato sauce and plenty of cheese. Slices range from $2.10 (for plain) to $3.

Buy a soda there, or if you are looking for something a little more interesting/alcoholic, pop into The Foodery across the street (corner of 2nd and Poplar). They have an impressive selection of beers available by the bottle, and brown paper bags. Note: the Piazza’s website states that alcoholic beverages are not allowed, although we didn’t see anyone enforcing that.

Once you have all the provisions, head north on 2nd street to the Piazza and hopefully score a table in the square. We arrived around 7:30 p.m. and had no problem getting a seat, but there were people sitting on the pavement and they appeared to be reasonably comfortable, so that’s always an option.

The Piazza is a large open space, and can have kind of an eerie vibe at times when it’s empty, but it’s actually the perfect setting for this kind of event. The screen is huge, everyone has a good view, and the volume is kept at a reasonable level, meaning, you aren’t going to be able to hear every second of commentary, but you will be able to converse with your date. Hopefully, this is a good thing.

We watched the game for awhile, and when we tired of that, watched all the dogs and kids running around. When the game was still 0-0 at the bottom of the 6th, we took our seventh inning stretch by walking 2 blocks west to the Northern Liberties Community Garden and playground (at 3rd, Wildey & Bodine streets). They have swings!

On the first warm evening of the spring this year, my date and I were looking to do something outdoo

On the first warm evening of the spring this year, my date and I were looking to do something outdoors. We also wanted a drink, but the bars in my neighborhood had yet to put any tables outside. So we decided to make our own drinks and take them on a walk. Obviously, this date could work with any number of libations, but what’s more fun to make when you are thinking ahead to summer than a cold, delicious smoothie? (Alcohol not required, but recommended).

How cheap we talkin’: Approximately $8- $13 pp, depending mostly on the quality and quantity of the alcohol you invest in. A small (6oz. ) bottle of vodka runs $6-15, Sherbert is $2-3, Frozen fruit is $3-4, as is juice.

Why this will impress your date: You knowledge of the romantic park benches in your neighborhood will be much appreciated, especially post-smoothie.

Next date: Anytime!

The Inside Game: Drinking straws are key. If you don’t have any, beg a couple from a local restaurant, like we did!

Score extra points: I picked up the ingredients for the smoothies ahead of time, but laboring together over whether to go with the frozen pineapple or mango could be fun too.

We started with this smoothie recipe, but our final drink was a product of trial and error. But doing the whole – “Here, taste this, what do you think?” “I think it needs more Vodka” was, of course, part of the fun.

1 c. mixed frozen berries

1 c. frozen pineapple chunks

1/2 c. orange juice

1/2 c. mango sorbet

1 tray ice cubes

6 shots vodka

Put all ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth.

After making your drinks (and putting them in non-conspicuous containers), take to the streets. It doesn’t matter too much where you wander. You can take this as an opportunity to show your date your neighborhood, or explore together an area you haven’t walked around in before. On our walk, we headed from Bella Vista toward South Philly on Passyunk Avenue. Passyunk is interesting because it has a lot of history (Giant coins embedded in the sidewalk commemorate that it originally an Indian trail, and George Washington housed many of his soldiers on the 800 and 900 blocks) and it changes character as you walk. Around 6th street, you will pass Pat’s and Geno’s (which may spur discussion on which of the two warring cheesesteak empires you prefer – or, in the other direction, may inspire a discussion about vegetarianism). At 11th and Tasker, check out the Passyunk Fountain, which used to spout music in addition to water. Further down, you and your date can compare your favorite bands at the Beautiful World Syndicate record store, open until 9pm every night.

If you made your smoothies right, you should be feeling pretty good right about now, so you might want to try to find a place to sit down and relax for a minute before heading home. Or you might just want to stumble back the way you came, hopefully hand in hand.
