Som jeg skvaldret litt om i kommentarfeltet forleden dag har jeg levert avhandlingen. Weeee!

De siste par ukene har jeg vært i humørversjonen av dansk vær, og veksler gjennom å tasse rundt med et fårete glis, og å lengte etter å krølle meg opp i sofaen for å stortute. (Ok, sistnevnte kan ha å gjøre med at tre måneders oppsamling av  sjukdommer og mensverk bestemte seg for å slå inn, alt på en gang.)

Men selv om det er herlig å være ferdig, så er det ikke herlig å forlate fine kollegaer og god veileder, og det er heller ikke spesielt moro at fremtiden stadig er usikker. Nå har jeg fått noen halve løfter om drømmejobb, men jeg tør ikke å juble enda. Ikke minst fordi jeg presterte å si noe dumt. Det kommer noen spennende uker.

Men nå er dere oppdaterte Det blir noen runder med boblevann fremover, og jeg er _veldig_ letta, ikke minst med tanke på hvor usikker jeg følte meg for et år siden — jeg lider bare av post-thesis-stress-disorder.

Og den derre Pffft’en er lyden av en ballong som blir sluppet ivei uten knute. Det er meg, det. Så får vi se hvor jeg lander hen!

I like to collect 90s magazine and post some interesting articles on this blog. I only did it once so far, and since there is a large time gap between my post these days, I decided to post some more.

Here are the albums that were just released, appearing in the February edition of TV Hits magazine. I don’t have any of these albums so I can’t give my personal opinion on them.

“Yield” Pearl Jam – Those mad rockers Pearl Jam are finally back with their latest album, “Yield”. The excellent single, “Given To Fly” and the tracks “Brain Of J” and “Wish List” will have Pearl Jam fans in rapture! This album is reminiscent of the excellent “Vitalogy” and “10″ albums. If you haven’t been a fan of the Jam, start now!

Okay! Sounds like a plan!

“LSG” Levert. Sweat. Gill. – Three legends of R&B unite to make LSG – it’s Gerald Levert, Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill – and they’ve made one very smooth album. Don’t go past the tracks “My Body”, “Where Did I Go Wrong”, “Curious” and “You Got Me”. This is definitely the CD to play if you’re in the mood for some sultry sounds.

I don’t think I have ever heard of these guys. =S

“An American Werewolf In Pairs” Various – This soundtrack to the freaky movie with Julie Delpy and Tom Everett Scott is just awesome. With “Mouth” by Bush, “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Cake, Eva Trout’s (!) “Soup Kitchen”, Fat’s “Downtime” and loads of other great tracks, this album is made to be played very loud! Way-cool.

Never saw the movie and I’m not exactly interested in it either. The title of the movie sounds . . . lame, but hey, if you’ve seen it and recommend the flick or soundtrack, leave a comment! I’m just going to prejudge this flick as terrible until somebody tells me otherwise.

“A Moment of Love” La Bouche – If La Bouche’s latest CD doesn’t get you up and dancing’, nothing will! Fans will love unreal ditties like ”A Moment Of Love”, “You Won’t Forget Me” and “Oh A Night Like This”. Also check out the cover of “I Can’t Stand The Rain” …the oldies might even like this one! So whack it on and start shakin’ your thang!

Their song “Be My Lover” is a pretty tough single to beat. I love that song.

“Ground Zero” Various (Polygram) – Whoa! From the TV show Ground Zero, this CD is chock full of hits. With Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping”, The Chemical Brothers’ “Block Rockin’ Beats”, Dannii’s “All I Wanna Do”, Texas’ “Say What You Want” and Spice Girls’ “Say You’ll Be There”, it’s an absolute must-have CD!

That’s all.

I can’t help but ask, is there anything this reviewer doesn’t like? Everything happens to be Rad! Cool! Whicked!

After this, I realized I definitely don’t have a big enough music collection…

Is there still no better Gangsta movie than NEW JACK CITY!? More entertaining and exciting than GOODFELLAS or A BRONX TALE. Hell, I’ll take it over SCARFACE!.. While, Wesley Snipes stole the show as Nino Brown, the cast and music director showed of in this 90’s flick loosely based on Oakland, Ca druglord, Felix Mitchell. Some didn’t like the fact that producers set the movie in NY instead of Oakland, but in my opinion, that was the only way the story would recieve any recognition.

I had a thought! NEW JACK CITY: The Stage Play!… Starring Allen Payne (below on left) as Nino Brown. Seeing as how Payne is the number one C-List Black actor, and works with Tyler Perry (House of Payne) he could murder this role…

While I consider the rest of the casting of the play, enjoy my favorite cuts off the soundtrack. Help me cast this mug!

Birth

1947. Glen Buxton (Alice Cooper) born in Akron, Ohio.

On Stage

1965. Bill Graham stages his first promotion at the Fillmore Auditorium featuring The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane.

In Court

1978. Johhny Rotten starts legal proceedings in the High Court in London to wind-up The Sex Pistols. His lawyers are granted special leave to serve notice of the action on Sid Vicious who is currently on bail in a New York hospital accused of murdering his girlfriend, Nancy Spungeon. Vicious was admitted to hospital after slashing his wrists in an abortive suicide attempt. Further action is adjourned for a hearing date to be set.

In The Studio

1966. Brian Wilson is hard at work in Gold Star Studios, Los Angeles on the new Beach Boys album, “Smile”. The track “Fire” doesn’t seem to be coming together so he sends an aide out to a toy store to buy plastic red fire helmets for the orchestra, studio crew and friends assembled there. Even that doesn’t quite capture the feeling he’s trying to create so he gets the studio’s janitor, Brother Julius, to start a fire in a bucket in the middle of the studio. On the 24th take he is finally satisfied. Later in the evening, Brian is told that the studio was nearly burned down. A wave of fires had been sweeping the city during the week and Brian decides they’ve been caused by his recording of the track. He tries to set light to the master tape but it won’t ignite. Convinced that he’s imbued the track with magical properties he has the tape locked in a vault where it can do no harm.

1972. The Partridge Family (ABC, U.S.A.) Swiss Family Partridge. Here’s the complete episode. The first clip links to the other two parts.

Death

2006. Gerald Levert (LeVert) dies in Newbury, Ohio, U.S. from an accidental mix of prescription drugs and over the counter medications.

a long time ago in a galaxy far away (let’s say, circa 1985), the internet didn’t exist.

music wasn’t free, it was only available in record stores, for those who had the £££. and let’s face it most ten year olds didn’t. those who didn’t have whsmith birthday tokens (books? yeah right) would spend hours hovering over the red record button on their ghettoblaster waiting for the songs they wanted to come on the radio. this could take days and you always missed the intro, and most of your summer holiday, if you were dedicated.

some clever, if clunky, editing was required to retain as much of the song as possible before the dj started smarming again. for the 80s preteen generation this was usually bruno brookes and mark goodier on radio 1, the former last seen presenting a fishing show on sky sports 3. what if the tape ran out before the end of the song, and this was before 1987 when tapes didn’t flip over to the other side automatically? don’t smirk, generation y, that was the height of convenience and technology back then!

add this to the equation – there were some songs that were never played on the radio. you’d have to fork out for the whole tape to get one song. there were even some songs that weren’t commercially available because they were used on a soundtrack which didn’t get released. so what did you do? you waited three to four years until the movie arrived on tv, that’s what you did, then you recorded it to video. then you played it back and shoved your ghettoblaster right up to the tv speakers. repeat process until you managed to get the whole way through the song before being interrupted by a rogue family member. if you were smart you locked the living room door.

the best john hughes movie that never was, and i think, the most underrated of all the 80s teen movies. the atlantic starr track is from the scene near the beginning when the cheerleaders are practising. i wanted this song so i could copy cindy mancini and co’s dancing. what happened to amanda peterson? she was a great actress, reversing the hollywood trend of twentysomething highschoolers, actually being younger, at 15, than her senior year character. the second track is the setting for ronald’s public premiere of the infamous ‘african anteater ritual’ dance. a truly legendary moment – think david brent’s ill-advised office high-kicks set to a high school dance.

 everyone knows the big tune released from this movie – soft rock singalong ‘nothing’s gonna stop us now’ by starship. it went to number one across the world but this wasn’t enough to warrant a full release for the soundtrack. belinda carlisle provided an unreleased track for the memorable cartoon intro that sees emmy transformed from egyptian spinster to 80s department store dummy. the second track is from 80s pop star alisha’s second album, and was used in the scene where andrew mccarthy and kim cattrall scamper around the department store after hours. which i was so jealous of.

coming to america (1988)

back then, eddie murphy was a comic genius. as soon as you’d stopped laughing at his standup tales of ice cream vans and drunk uncles, he introduced you to soul glo, crazy barbers who argue about boxing champions and that reverend, jacked by countless comedians since (richard blackwood, i am so talking to you). the first song is from the club scene where akeem and semi find out that every woman in queens is severely unhinged. the second is from the scene where lisa receives the $500,000 earrings. while her sister prances about in big plastic earrings worthy of pat butcher, oblivious to the injustice.

by the time this movie was released, tom cruise was invincible. (oh, this was way before he discovered scientology and keeping impressionable young women hostage…) which was just as well because as much i love it, the plot is sketchy at best. from what i can gather, tom visits an old bar colleague in jamaica and also meets elisabeth shue. then they dance and drink a lot. fair play to them. both of these songs are from scenes in balmy, outdoor clubs that make you want to head on over to www.sunshine.co.uk to book your next getaway.

madonna – crazy for you
madonna – gambler
fortuitously (or not, for the rest of the cast) this release coincided with the exact moment when madonna blew up in the uk. rosanna who? in the hot summer of 1985 holiday’, ‘crazy for you’ and ‘into the groove’ were simultaneously in the uk charts. i would boom them out of the living room as i kicked, spun and crawled across the carpet in leggings and fingerless gloves. i used to think my mum hated madonna. it turns out she was similarly impressed by her music, but was afraid of her effect on my behaviour. can’t think why…oops, we haven’t talked about the movie. despite her brief cameo as a nightclub singer, it was and still is, all about madonna.

I wish I knew more about Karin Jones but I’m at a total loss on this one. Under The Influence Of Love, released in 1982 on the Handshake label appears to be her only album. The set features arrangements by Dunn Pearson and Dennis Williams and co-production and background vocals by Eddie Levert.

What I DO know is that this album is virtually impossible to find as an original pressing nowadays for less than three figures and the equally elusive twelve inch single of the title track (pictured above) commands anywhere from $50 -$100.

I can’t imagine what Poppa Levert is going through right now. It has been reported that Sean Levert, son of O’Jays lead singer Eddie Levert, was found dead in a Cleveland, Ohio jail over the weekend, sources said.

Sean Levert, 39, was being held for allegedly failing to pay about $80,000 in child support. The cause of death was not immediately known.

Sean Levert was a member of the R&B group LeVert with his late brother Gerald Levert and Marc Gordon. Gerald Levert died Nov. 10, 2006 at the age of 40.

The Levert family is definitely in the aGEnT’s prayers!!
