SO IT WAS OUR SECOND TO LAST SHOW! And fate knew we were ripe for the picking – it gave us all

SO IT WAS OUR SECOND TO LAST SHOW! And fate knew we were ripe for the picking – it gave us all the studio problems it could. (So like we couldn’t play MP3s so we had to record them all to Digital Audio tape (which is really fun!) because we had no CD-Rs, and then the DAT player in the on-air studio didn’t work so we played it in ANOTHER studio and pulled it through from another studio and it was hellish and fun.)

So yeah, next week there will be probably our greatest giveaway ever, or at least second best. It’ll be fair cool. (Y)

T.M.Z. is reporting that Michael Jackson’s latest single ”This is It” is a direct

T.M.Z. is reporting that Michael Jackson’s latest single ”This is It” is a direct rip-off of a Paul Anka song. John Branca, the special administrator for Michael Jackson’s estate tells TMZ Paul Anka is right — “This Is It” was not written by MJ alone, it was co-written with Paul Anka”…

Branca and his people are negotiating a settlement with Paul Anka’s lawyer.

Branca tells TMZ, “We acknowledge that Michael and Paul wrote this song together.”

As we first reported, the other special administrator, John McClain, told Anka “We’ll give you whatever you want, whatever it takes we’ll do the right thing.”

Read more: http://www.tmz.com/#ixzz0TlX7Q1IG

People need to realize, once and for all, as illustrated by this case, that copyright infringement is bad for business.

If you are caught stealing a fellow artist work, then the best thing for your business is to ”pay” whatever the correct percentage is for the contribution of the plagiarised work, and partner up with the artist that you tried to steal from,…and everyone can get paid, and participate in a positive way, in the promotion of the production…

I am sure this was an innocent mix-up, due to the death of M.J.because he was always fair, and a strong advocate for fellow artist and entertainers, especially when it came down to intellectual property rights.

In my career, I have had an intimate confrontation with protecting and maintaining a fellow artist and entertainer’s copyright to his original works. As reported in the Random House, David A. Price book,” The Pixar Touch”, without my knowledge or consent, I am a strong advocate for artist copyright protection.

http://books.google.com/books?id=6ium9aok5yMC&pg=RA2-PA205&lpg=RA2-PA205&dq=jerrry+lee+brice&source=bl&ots=5nM-Xc2ahm&sig=U-yKaS1oTQqS12uHHVLVZ9QIsHM&hl=en&ei=S7jTStWRDoyoMPHhqZUD&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=8&ved=0CCIQ6AEwBw#v=onepage&q=&f=false

My efforts and discovery won this case, and protected a fellow artist copyright, from the infringement of a major corporation. Mouse’s Grateful Dead album covers are iconic, and have influenced the spirit of a lot of young artist out there, as well as me.

If I were their attorney, I would have told them to settle immediately, they got Jerry Brice investigating the case. Funny part about all of this, is that I wanted to keep it a secret, because it is embarrassing for the losers of the case, but somehow this book was released with all of my words in print, and I am not even mentioned as the author in the bibliography, just the index, unlike what he did for the idiot’s that Pixar/Disney hired…

Basically, if you settle for over a million dollars, you stole the work, but you did not hear that from me….lmao….you definetly read it here.

This case between M. J.’s estate and Paul Anka will go away, and let’s just hope that the executors and brilliant attorneys that are handling the estate, as well as the entire Sony music and film company, can be more thorough in the future. I want to see all of his children benefit from this, as well as Paul Ankas’.

http://www.tmz.com/2009/10/12/michael-jackson-paul-anka-this-is-it-john-branca-settlement/

St Jude’s have added two new cover designs to their popular range of large square format sketchbooks. Both cover designs are by Angie Lewin, one is called Ellipse which is a simple pattern of mustard, teal and green ovals against an antique white background. The other cover design is called Seedheads and is classic Angie Lewin pattern in pale blues and light greys against a very light grey background, this one we are sure is going to be very popular with fans of Angie’s work.

Made in England, both notebooks measure 21cm x 21cm and contain 96 pages of plain paper and are 100% recycled. Finishing touches: bound with a brown paper belly band.

We offer the full range of St Jude’s stationery including these new sketchbooks here: http://www.onebrowncow.co.uk/stationery-cards/st-judes-stationery/cat_99.html

Also from Angie Lewin are two new greetings card designs, Autumn Spey and 5 Trees (shown below) see our Angie Lewin pages for these new additions http://www.onebrowncow.co.uk/stationery-cards/angie-lewin/cat_57.html

Refreezing is the third of Lewin’s change transition stages, where people are taken from a sta

Refreezing is the third of Lewin’s change transition stages, where people are taken from a state of being in transition and moved to a stable and productive state.

Here are some positive and constructive ways to make it happen:

Evidence stream

Show them time and again that the change is real.

Get people to accept that a change is real by providing a steady stream of evidence to demonstrate that the change has happened and is successful. You can plan for change projects to reach milestones and deliver real results in a regular and predictable stream of communications that is delivered on a well-managed timetable. This is as opposed to the early ‘big bang’ followed by a long period of relative silence. Communicate through a range of media. Get people who have been involved to stand up and tell their stories of challenge and overcoming adversity. Ensure the communications reach everyone involved, and do so over and over again. Keep posters and data charts up to date. Regularly show progress, demonstrating either solid progress against plan or robust action to address any slippage.

Golden handcuffs

Put rewards in their middle-term future.

When loyalty and the joy of the job are not enough to keep people, they may need some financial or other rewards. However, this can re-bound -paying them today could still lead them to leave. The promise of future reward, however, may be enough to keep them engaged. The promised rewards cannot be too far out or they would not be enticing — usually reasonable reward needs to be within a twelve-month timeframe. This risk is that when a reward is gained, this could be a point at which the person leaves. If you want them to stay, you may need to keep a rolling handcuff system.

Institutionalization

Build change into the formal systems and structures.

The formal systems and structures within the organization are those which are not optional. People do them because they are ‘business as usual’ and because they will be criticized or otherwise punished if they fail to do them. After a while, institutionalized items become so entrenched, people forget to resist and just do what is required, even if they do not agree with them. So you can make make changes stick by building them into the formal fabric of the organization, for example:

Building them into the systems of standards – this the way we do things here!.

Put them or elements of them into the primary strategic plan.

Build them into people personal objectives including the CEO.

Ensure people are assessed against them in personal reviews.

Reward people for following the house rules – see below

New challenge

Get them looking to the future.

One of the key things that makes people happy is challenge. In particular, people who have discovered this get hooked on the buzz and fall into the psychological flow of getting deeply engaged. Challenge is a future-based motivator that focuses people on new and different things, rather than basic motivations such as control and safety that may lead people to resist change. Get people to maintain interest in a change by giving them new challenges, related to the change, that stimulate them and keep them looking to the future.

Reward alignment

Align rewards with desired behaviors.

A surprisingly common trap in change is to ask (or even demand) that people change, yet the reward system that is driving their behavior is not changed. Requesting teamwork and rewarding individuals is a very common example. Many people are driven by extrinsic rewards, and the saying ‘Show me how I’m paid and I’ll show you how I behave’ is surprisingly common. So when you make a change, ensure that you align the reward system with the changes that you want to happen.

Rites of passage

Use formal rituals to confirm change.

Rituals are symbolic acts to which we attribute significant meaning. A celebration to mark a change is used in many cultures, ranging from rites of passage to manhood for aboriginal tribes to the wedding ceremonies of Christian and other religions. Such ritual passages are often remembered with great nostalgia, and even the remembrance of them becomes ritualized. When a change is completed, celebrate with a party or some other ritualized recognition of the passing of a key milestone. You can also start a change with a wake (which is a party that is held to celebrate the life of someone who has died) to symbolize letting go of the past. Create new rituals to help shift the culture to a new form. Use these, if possible, to replace the rituals that already exist.

Socializing

Build it into the social fabric.

Society is almost invisible and people accept its rules without even noticing that they are doing so. A change that is socialized becomes normal and the ‘way things are’. When something becomes a social norm, people will be far more unlikely to oppose it as to do so is to oppose the group and its leaders. Seal changes by building them into the social structures. Give social leaders prominent positions in the change. When they feel ownership for it, they will talk about it and sell it to others. Create rituals, utilize artifacts and otherwise build it into the culture.

Continuing our discussion of business clothing, the dress shirt is particularly important. Most busi

Continuing our discussion of business clothing, the dress shirt is particularly important. Most businessmen wear dress shirts to work; furthermore, most suit-wearers remove their jacket for at least part of the day, thus exposing their shirt for all to see. To that end, it is important to get the dress shirt right.

The key element to any dress shirt is the collar as it is always visible. It sets the tone in terms of the formality of the shirt and also tends to be the first thing on a shirt to wear out. There are several basic collar types for business: the spread collar (with it’s offspring, the cutaway collar) seen on the left, the point collar (middle), the tab collar (not shown) and the button-down collar (on the right). I’ve listed these from most formal to least formal.

I should state right off the hop that I find the spread collar infinitely more appealing than the point collar for a number of reasons. First, I think that it is far and away the more dashing and handsome of the collars and lends itself to a more formal appearance (it says “management” more than “lackey”, and you should always dress for the job you want, not the one you have). Furthermore, it accommodates a wider variety of tie-knots; it is nearly impossible to tie a half-windsor (let alone a full windsor) knot with a point collar, as the collar tips will likely be lifted well off the front of your shirt. Finally, it hides the ends of the collar under the lapels of your suit, which I have always thought was a cleaner, more proper, look. That said, it doesn’t suit everyone’s face. If you have a longer, leaner face, I would definitely trend towards a spread collar. However, if your face is more round, than a point collar may be more suitable. Additionally, if being worn by itself, a cutaway collar (a particularly wide spread collar) can look a bit strange worn open and so a less spread collar might be a better choice if you are only wearing a dress shirt (no tie, no jacket) to work. In terms of regional tradition, the spread collar is more European (most British, French and Italian shirts sport spread collars, with the Brits tending to a wider spread than their European brethren), while the point collar is more traditionally American. The tab collar was once a popular alternative, however it is very rare to find now and so, for now, we’ll leave it by the wayside. Finally, the button-down collar is the least formal and was initially made for sportsman so as to prevent collars from flipping up in the course of hitting a polo ball. Therefore, in Europe (and, to a lesser extent, in Canada) it remains a more casual option and rests in the grey area in terms of office-wear. On the other hand, the famous Brooks Brothers button-down oxford remains an office standard in the U.S. (and was favoured by famed Italian businessman Gianni Agnelli, one of the best dressed men in history). Again, I would highly recommend at least a moderately spread collar; it better shows off your tie and nearly always is more aesthetically pleasing.

In terms of discussing shirt quality, there are a number of features that good quality shirts often have. First, they tend to have what is known as a “split yoke” (pictured on the right), which is to say that the back of the shirt below the collar consists of two panels and not one, which increases the comfort and ability to move of the wearer. Along the same lines, some high quality shirts sport a piece of fabric called a “gusset” that connects the front of the shirt to the back (pictured at left), once again allowing ease of movement. An additional feature of many higher-end shirts is a higher collar stance (which is particularly evident on shirts made by the British maker Turnbull & Asser and Italian brand Pal Zileri). The collar ought to have a certain stiffness to it as well, so as to prevent premature curling of the collar points. The pattern of the shirt (if there is one), should match across the seams (including at the back where the yoke of the shirt is split) and across the pocket if there is one in front. Finally, the quality of the fabric itself is the most important factor of all in determining a shirt’s collar. If a particular shirt has, or doesn’t have any of these factors, it isn’t necessarily a poorly made shirt (although it ought to have nice fabric and a split yoke); rather, these are merely guidelines. The highest quality shirts have hand-sewn button-holes and mother-of-pearl buttons as both features tends to stand up to laundering better (having said that, I’ve had several mother-of-pearl buttons reduced to powder by dry-cleaners). A shirt should also always have removal collar stays, which can be plastic or metal and are inserted into the collar in order for it to keep it’s shape. Nearly every shirt will have collar stays when first purchased.

The second most important aspect of the shirt is the fit. So often guys walk around with shirts that could double as tents. For some reason, the idea that an overly baggy shirt is more comfortable than a more fitted one has become a common belief. This is simply not true. Not only do baggy shirts tend to constantly attain a muffin-top-eque look above one’s pants, but they also will be uncomfortable under a well-fitted suit given the excess fabric in play. The best part of this is that I’m not going to tell you to scrap your ill-fitting shirts because there is an extremely easy and cheap solution to the problem. Simply take them to your neighbourhood tailor and have him or her remove the extra fabric, narrow the arms and perfect the fit for somewhere around $10 a shirt. Basically, you will have a brand new shirt for $10. Better yet, if you’re thin, buy a brand’s ‘Slim Fit’ line rather than their regular line and simply get into the habit of taking new shirts to your tailor (and add $10 onto the price of each shirt you buy in your head). One thing to note is that a shirt’s collar cannot easily be tailored (and neither can a shirt sleeve be easily lengthened) and so you must purchase a shirt that fits correctly at the neck and the sleeve. A properly fitted shirt will allow you to place two fingers between your neck and the shirt collar without too much discomfort; the sleeve a shirt should hit you at the base of your thumb.

The next major decision to make when buying a shirt is the type of cuff. Effectively there are two types: barrel (which are fastened with buttons and can be seen on the left) and french (which are fastened with cuff-links and can be seen at right, sans cuff-links). The more formal of the two is the french cuff. In Britain, the predominant cuff is the french cuff, while in North America, it tends to be the barrel cuff. Barring a tuxedo shirt (which should always sport french cuffs), the working man can choose either without any fear. The more interesting option is french given that it allows for the addition of cuff-links to an outfit; however, in some positions it may be deemed to be too formal. Either way, it’s probably best to a have a mix ofthe two amongst your shirts, allowing you to adapt to the formality of the occasion; my preference is for french cuffs given that I enjoy the opportunity to wear cuff-links.

The two colours most acceptable for business are white and pale blue. You are treading in dangerous water with any other colours if they are the predominant colour of the shirt. Thus, a white shirt with blue and brown checks would be completely acceptable on a day-to-day basis, as would a white shirt with a brown check. However, a totally brown shirt is not. Solid shirts colours that are NEVER appropriate in a business context include red, orange, black, brown and teal. Colours like pink and violet are acceptable, particularly in Europe (although they should be approached with some trepidation outside of Europe if you’re at the bottom of the corporate ladder; best to get somewhere in the middle before you assert your personal style to any major extent). Again, this isn’t to say that a shirt can never have black, red, orange or brown on it; it just can’t be solidly those colours. You will, without fail, like a jackass and the number one goal for any business person ought to be not to look like a jackass. If you wish to wear a black shirt (never with a tie) open under a suit at night, all the power to you. However, leave it in the closet during the day otherwise you will bare a strong resemblance to an extra in the Sopranos at work. To reiterate, the safest colours for solid shirts (and most of your shirts should be solid, at least at the outset) are always white and pale blue and, luckily, they tend to be the most flattering colours for most people anyway (particularly pale blue).

The highest quality shirts in the world are made by firms such as Charvet (France), Turnbull & Asser, Thomas Pink and Hilditch & Key (Great Britain), Ralph Lauren (particularly the Purple and Black Label lines), Tom Ford and Brooks Brothers (the United States), Pal Zileri, Borelli, Lorenzini, Brioni, Kiton, Ermengildo Zegna and Armani (Italy) and Ascot Chang (Hong Kong). However, my recommendation for more affordable (but still well-made) shirts is to go to T.M Lewin (www.tmlewin.co.uk), a British firm that sells a wide variety of beautiful shirts in a number of collar styles. Worth a look are the “house” labels from higher-end department stores such as Nordstrom’s, Saks, Harry Rosen and Holt Renfrew. Finally, shirts by Hugo Boss, if on sale, can be decent (although, again, not at full price).

As a final consideration, given that many offices are hot and most people remove their suit jacket to sit behind their desk, sweat can become an issue in the summer. To this end, I would highly suggest wearing an undershirt in order to prevent the dreaded pit stains. Ask any woman you know; there is nothing worse than seeing a guy rocking massive pit stains. Contrary to what one may think, the best undershirts tend to be grey, as darker colours show up less than white under a white dress shirt. If you’re planning on wearing a tie, go with a crewneck undershirt as it will not show at the collar, while a v-neck ought to be your choice if you’re wearing your dress shirt open. Undershirts should never be seen at the office, even under an open dress shirt. Furthermore, there is nothing more comfortable than a cotton undershirt (particularly while reading the paper on a Saturday morning) and, since they’re incredibly cheap, it’s in your best interest to have quite a few in a variety of styles. One final word of warning: it may have been acceptable to leave your dress shirt untucked during the dot-com era. However, now it is most definitely not so make sure that during office hours, your shirt tails remain within the confines of your pants.

Unfreezing is the first of Lewin’s change stages (the Square) – this is about getting people ready to accept change. You need some way of readying people for change in whatever Change Model you apply. The techniques below need to be applied with care and they are probably best used in combination. I have included what I regard as recommended approaches. I have not included “Command “ (just telling them they are going to change and expecting obedience) or the “Burning Platform” ( the platform is burning so we must jump) approach which I regard as cop-outs in most circumstances – although they may have their place in a crisis – see the Evidence point below! .

Visioning: Done well, visions work to create change. Visions work when they act to motivate and inspire the large numbers of people that are needed to make the change happen. For the vision to be motivating, it must be memorable. For it to be memorable, it is usually surprising and short. To be surprising, it should be different from everyone else’s vision. To be believed, it must be a regular part of the conversation of senior people.

Challenge: Inspire people to achieve remarkable things. Stimulate people into change by challenging them to achieve something remarkable. Show confidence in their ability to get out of their comfort zone and do what has not been done before. This works particularly well with small groups, as well as individuals. Once the group has bought the challenge, then they will bounce off each other to make it happen. This is most effective when the people create their own stretch goals, so rather than telling them to do something, challenge them to achieve greatly, then, when they are fired up, ask them how far they can go.

Evidence: Cold, hard data is difficult to ignore. When you have incontrovertible evidence staring you in the face, for example, where the numbers are showing the company in the red or sales sinking into the sunset, it is difficult to put your head in the sand and wish it away. Cold, hard evidence is a good way of changing minds as counter-arguments require better data or sufficient strength to show the data as invalid.

Education and training: A gentler way of helping people see the need for change is by educating about why change is necessary and how change can be managed. This includes presentations, communications and full-on training sessions.

Use of Objectives: Tell people what to do, but not how. Set formal objectives for people that they will have to achieve, but do not tell them how they have to achieve this. In particular, if you can, give people objectives that they can only achieve by working in the intended change. Set the person a goal or formal objective that requires them to change.

Restructuring: Redesign the organization to force behavior change. Just as function follows form, so also will changing the shape of the organization. It will change how people behave.Groups that can cohere into separate units are likely to become very internally motivated. Motivation is good, but the internal facing can be away from the organization, so you must ensure that group goals are aligned, for example by regular external communications.

Rites of passage: Hold a wake to help let go of the past.

In the early 20th century, psychologist Kurt Lewin identified three stages of change that are still

In the early 20th century, psychologist Kurt Lewin identified three stages of change that are still the basis of many approaches today.

Unfreeze

People like to feel safe and in control and their sense of identity is tied into their present environment particularly if it has been relatively stable for a while! This creates a feeling of comfort and any challenges to it even those which may offer significant benefit, can cause discomfort. See why change hurts!

Talking about the future is rarely enough to move them from this ‘frozen’ state and significant work is usually required to ‘unfreeze’ them and get them moving. In frustration some managers may revert to using a Push method to get them moving – coercing them into a change. The Pull method of leadership, persuasion and modeling behavior takes longer but has a much better long term effect . The term ‘change ready’ is often used to describe people who are unfrozen and ready to take the next step. Some people come ready for change whilst others take a long time to let go of their comfortable current realities.

Transition

For Lewin change is a journey. This journey may not be that simple and the person may need to go through several stages of misunderstanding before they get to the other side. A classic trap in change is for the leaders to spend months on their own personal journeys and then expect everyone else to cross the chasm in a single bound. Transition takes time and needs leadership and support! But sometimes transition can also be a pleasant trap – it may feel better to travel hopefully than arrive – particularly for the team leading the change.

Refreeze

At the other end of the journey, the final goal is to ‘refreeze’, putting down roots again and establishing the new place of stability – embedding new processes and developing a new culture. In practice, refreezing may be a slow process as transitions seldom stop cleanly, but go more in fits and starts with a long tail of bits and pieces. There are good and bad things about this. In modern organizations, this stage is often rather tentative as the next change may well be around the next corner. What is often encouraged, then, is more of a state of ’slushiness’ where freezing is never really achieved (theoretically making the next unfreezing easier). The danger with this that many organizations have found is that people fall into a state of change shock, where they work at a low level of efficiency and effectiveness as they await the next change.

He interviewed more than 100 players about their debuts in the big leagues for this fascinating book. Among the notable players are A-Rod, Barry Bonds and Manny Ramirez. Anybody who is following the recent news about these three and steroid use will want to read this book! (As a Red Sox fan let me just say that we are more grateful for Jason Bay every day!)

This isn’t the type of book you’d want to sit down and read through but it’s a great book to pick up when you just have a few minutes, or when you get curious about your favorite players. It is a welcome diversion from the current bad news about steroids, suspensions, tell-all books, and court cases.

Un álbum de fotos en que salgo bien
de pronto mis penas echaron a correr
explotaron y alzaron el vuelo
y no sé deciros
