Jabberwocky, by Lewis Carrol

‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! and through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.

‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Best. Poem. Ever.

At the risk of over-explaining things, I love the fact that this poem is mostly made up nonsense words, and yet it still totally makes sense. Is there any doubt that a vorpal blade would go snicker-snack when it cuts off the Jabberwock’s head? Doesn’t “came whiffling through the tulgey wood, and burbled as it came” give you a good picture of what it looked like? And some of the nonsense is so good, the words have made it into common language. Brilliant.

Everything’s got a moral, if only you can find it” [Lewis Carroll].

This past summer, my book club attended an author reading at The Thurber House. The weather was perfect, the picnic dinner was tasty, and the author was gracious and entertaining. While there, we all spent a little time pursuing the gifts. One of Thurber’s books caught my sister’s fancy, Fables for Our Time and Famous Poems Illustrated.

As is her custom, Dawn recently finished the book and passed it on to me. The author, in the little volume, with its amusing chapter titles and line drawings, concludes each chapter with a clever moral like “don’t get it right, just get it written,” and “you can fool too many people too much of the time,” and “there’s no safety in numbers, or in anything else.”

Certainly not the typical morals that appear in children’s books.

All this reading about morals started me wondering about the moral of my story. If you were to sit down and read about my exploits and failures, adventures and detours, what fundamental principles would become evident? What practical lessons would you take away?

I think it should be something clever and fun, amusing and easily recalled. It should be practical, but inspire action. I like this one:

You can’t win if you don’t play. You must stay in it to win it.

What is the moral of your story? What are you teaching others through your life?

If you don’t like the way things are shaping up, it’s time to change your life. Rewrite the ending. Allow others to learn a lesson from your missteps. Be authentic. Share the good and the bad.

Whatever you are, be a good one!

Ah, mundo, pra onde ele iria, pra onde ele iria?

..

Fall (por Ricardo Jevoux)

Comentado por Alice:
Don’t u say that! heheheh. I’m Kiding (I’m a kid also). Everyone feel like this. And you wanna know something? I even enjoy those feelings. =D aehuaehiau. See u (along the queen’s castle)!

Cortem-lhe a cabeça, cortem-lhe a cabeça!

I guess everyone is a bit exhausted from Halloween parties and trick-or-treating so for today’s posting, I have decided to post this picture instead of beginning a new lesson. This is one of Diyanah’s traditional media portraits, only this time she used water based markers and not watercolour. Enjoy!

This is her description of the drawing:

“This is my depiction of the Lewis Carrol characters, Alice and the Cheshire Cat. In my spin-off fiction, which I am still writing from time to time, the Cheshire Cat grows affectionate towards the heroine, Ellis, though she is unaware of it. I was in the mood to draw a romantic picture of both of them. Notice that only the tree they are sitting under blooms cherry blossoms while the other trees in the background are still the same green and autumn colours. I’ve never seen a cherry tree in real life; only on television and in stories but I do believe they are beautiful “

The assignment was to write a poem using a bunch of made-up words, but make it so that even though the reader doesn’t know the words, they can figure out what’s going on. (i.e. “Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carrol)

(Pronunciation Guide, for the harder words, at the bottom)

.

.

.

Josh the Yosh

.

Josh the Yosh was a dansky old fool,
Who trimbled down in the ighelic Brühl*.
His sprizzity antics would flouster the town,
And often cause police to flizzle and frown.
One day his spry, hargie mind thought
Of a yznarn to acquire the fame that he sought.
So the grouphy cardgomer krumphed up the flue
And proceeded to do as any good Yosh would do,
He spew zonomious words to the whole neighborhood
Perched like a frasé bird who fall rightly should,
But fall he did not, and he flaboozled his mouth,
Into forming some words that just raggered the south.
He said they were woldy and pickered with vridgens,
And praying for beauty’s how they should use their religions.
The west he called blickers and the east, he chollicked,
Was a groobious group that could make a man sick.
He claimed the north is a horth place with ribbious bicks
And their mothers should all be shallayed at with bricks.
His xextrification ingroofled the people,
And they let out a bleel that he be hung from the steeple.
Now poor Josh (that old Yosh), he baroobled too far;
He fell from the flue where he was smulched by a car.
And thus ends the tale of Josh, who learned the rule,
That karma’s a blitch if to people you’re cruel.

.

.

.

*A town in Germany
.

Pronunciation Guide:
“Ighelic” – [eye-gell-ick] (g as in gas)
“yznarn” – [yiz-narn] (with as short an “i” as possible)
“zonomious” – [zone-oh-mē-us]
“frasé” – [frah-ZAY]
“vridgens” – (rhymes with pigeons)
“xextrification” – [tzecks-trif-ick-ay-shun]

me lembro bem, eu já fui um deus

daqueles que moviam mundos e fundos

bastava rir para ver tudo florir

mas aqueles que eu chamava de meus

aqueles que deveriam ter fé

In the Sir John Ritblat Gallery: Treasures of the British Library, you can see Lewis Carrol’s original manuscript of Alice’s Adventures Under Ground, early town-planning maps proposed for New York, a Beatles exhibit containing original lyrics (one by John, scribbled on the back of his son Julian’s first birthday card), photos and memorabilia, Captain Scott’s final diary entry, Shakespeare’s First Folio, Handel’s original score of Messiah, the Magna Carta and the Gutenberg Bible (one of the first printed books) among other historic scripts.

It’s worth making a special visit to see this gallery at any time, but definitely so if you’ve a couple of hours to kill in the King’s Cross area. Admission to the Sir John Ritblat Gallery is free.

After a lackluster-at-best summer movie season, we have all been (strangely) blessed with an incredi

After a lackluster-at-best summer movie season, we have all been (strangely) blessed with an incredible 09-10 season to look forward to. I seriously haven’t been this jazzed about movie-going in a few years. It seems that an amazing new debut is announced weekly at this point, which is really cutting in on my Hollywood bitching time. Below, I’ve created a haphazard, make-shift rundown of what I am absolutely chomping at the bit to see in the upcoming season:

The Road-Cormac McCarthy’s novel’s big screen adaptation was recently pushed back to Thanksgiving, frightening me all the more as I fear that studios are losing faith in its bankability.

Sherlock Holmes-Robert. Downey. Jr.

Alice in Wonderland-Tim Burton’s CGI-fest update of Lewis Carrol’s classic. Though I am EXTREMELY skeptical, Depp as the Mad Hatter with Matt Lucas, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Michael Sheen, Crispin Glover, Stephen Fry, and Alan Rickman are keeping my cries of “CGI-FOUL!” at bay.

Iron Man 2-I’m intrigued to see Downey fight Mickey Rourke. Intrigued enough to include this entry on this list. Past that, to be honest, I don’t see this film panning out much differently than its predecessor, but, as long as they deliver on some great Downey/Rourke headbashing, I’ll be content.

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus-This is, hands down, the crown jewel of this list. Terry Gilliam’s fantasy epic starring the late Heath Ledger had to improvise with its script as Ledger passed away during filming. So what is one of the most revered directors in Hollywood to do when he loses his lead actor? Simple, he calls in Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Ferrell to replace him. All in one movie. Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Colin Ferrell, and Heath Ledger all play the same role. I was trying to come up with a new word to describe this event, but I simply can’t.

Zombieland-I’m not even a self-professed zombie-buff like many of my co-horts, but the trailers for this endeavor look too astounding to pass up. Watching Woody Harrelson annihilate zombies while taking the less-than-menacing Jesse Eisenberg under his wing is all I wanted over the summer ‘09 movie season. Was that so much to ask?

I Love You Philip Morris-Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor in a dark comedy about an inmate who breaks out of jail once his lover is released from the same prison. I love Jim Carrey. I love Ewan McGregor. I love the premise. I Love You, Philip Morris. (I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

A Christmas Carol-Robert Zemeckis retells Dickens’ classic utilizing Jim Carrey as Scrooge and all three ghosts. Need I say more?

Fantastic Mr. Fox-Wes Anderson helms this Roald Dahl retelling with a cast the likes of Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, and Owen Wilson. CAN. NOT. WAIT.

Inception-Christopher Nolan’s first at-bat (no pun intended) since The Dark Knight. A sci-fi/thriller starring Leo DiCaprio. How many good things can we combine into a single movie?

Youth in Revolt-Michael Cera adopts an alternate persona all in the hopes of wooing a love interest. My description doesn’t do the title nearly as much justice as images of Cera with a faux mustache.

Bronson-Having been called A Clockwork Orange of our time, Bronson chronicles the true story of Charles Bronson, the prisoner, who attained superstar status from simply being an unruly inmate.

(Untitled)-An art flick commenting on the absurdity of art flicks and art in general. Seems to be everything Art School Confidential promised to be but failed to deliver on.

Gentlemen Broncos-Jared Hess’ latest directing forray is a surreal fantasy about a down-on-their-luck sci-fi writer who steals a young boy’s manuscript and profits greatly. I was sold upon reading “A surreal fantasy.”

The Box-Richard Kelly (who I’m STILL giving credit for Donnie Darko) directs James Marsden and Cameron Diaz in a thriller about a married couple who discover an obscure box left on their doorstep. Try to forget Southland Tales for just a minute and remember: James Marsden.

World’s Greatest Dad-This could very well be the role that brings poignancy back to Robin Williams’ career. Williams plays a failed poet father who finds his son dead due to auto-erotic asphyxiation. To lull his son’s unfortunate fate, he writes a beautiful suicide note that gets absurd publicity and paints his son as a genius. Williams then must decide whether to out himself as the genius or maintain his son’s newfound celebrity. Did I mention that Bobcat Goldthwait is helming the project?

The Vampire’s Assistant-All production stills simply do not do this flick justice, you HAVE to check out the trailer. Otherwise it just looks like John C. Reilly attempting a recreation of Nic Cage’s The Magician’s Apprentice, and that isn’t even out yet! This quasi fantasy-quasi comedy-quasi drama seems to be perfect for John C. Reilly who stars in the lead role. After pulling schlock duty at the Apatow-Factory for the last few years, it will be good to see him be able to stretch again and actually play with something with some meat to it.

Where the Wild Things Are-Spike Jonze’s adaptation of everyone’s favorite children’s book looks amazing and I’m very curious to see how good/bad it pans out.

9-Back to John C. Reilly! This voice cast is amongst the best I have seen in years. Christopher Plummer is a catch in any medium.

The Lovely Bones-The trailers all look AMAZING and have kept my appetite satiated for this neo-fantasy thriller involving a young girl slain before her time and her attempt to reach out from beyond the grave.

Big Fan-Patton Oswalt has put down a show-stopping dramatic performance that has stunned and stupefied most critics with its un-abashedly powerful and sincere dramatic intent. Oswalt steps out of the image he has been stereotyped with and fully explodes on the scene with a (hopefully) attention grabbing portrayal.

Not Quite Hollywood-A documentary (which I am usually a sucker for) about the explosion of the Australian film market in the ’70’s. Pure. Genius.

Kick-Ass-Michael Cera and Nick Cage star in Mark Miller’s adaptation of his own graphic novel in which an everyday kid takes on the mantel of the superhero. Miller’s graphic novel has a die-hard, monstrous fan base while being a relatively new title. Plus, Nic Cage.

Cold Souls-Paul Giamatti plays himself in a Being John Malkovich sort of drama, in which Paul, a successful actor, takes part in a breakthrough soul-removal-procedure.

This entire effort seems fairly frivolous, because, while this is all I can think of now, as soon as I finish writing this article, fourteen more trailers will be released and will stupify me. I’m FAR from complaining, however, as it has been years since I’ve been anywhere near this excited about anything Hollywood has done. Happy movie-going everyone!

Shameless self-promotion, everyone!

“… Off with his head!…”

Well the ALS 2009 Tour rolls on, and the 4th leg of the tour took me too the cooler climes of Melbou

Well the ALS 2009 Tour rolls on, and the 4th leg of the tour took me too the cooler climes of Melbourne town. The big difference on this leg of the tour was that guitar-slinging Rock Pig, Sheish Money was along for the ride. Now Sheish and I have played lots of local gigs, but outside of QLD and Northern NSW, the other states have so far missed out on the Nunn/Money experience. So I have to say… we were fairly excited!

Friday kicked off with the launch of Overload 2009 at the Fitzroy Town Hall, MC’d by poetic raconteur, Myron Lysenko. A truly beautiful venue and great space to mingle with the Melbourne poetry crowd. I was really impressed by the passion of the Mayor who delivered the best speech I have ever heard from a politician at such an event. You really got the sense that she was right behind the festival. After the speeches, The Heart Chamber featuring Matt Hetherington, Tom Joyce, Lia Hills, Marian Spires & Michelle Leber performed a set of love poems. Matt Hetherington’s poem , When I Am Not With Her There Where She Is, the absolute stand out and one of the best contemporary love poems I have read in the last decade.

So with the room feeling the love, Santo Cazzati hit the mic dressed in checked suit and matching hat with all the energy of a box of snakes, promising us to keep us safe from the Fitzroy Ghouls as he lead the poetry crawl, Takin’ it to the Streets. And we were off…

First Stop Dantes.

Kicking things off was Gabrielle Everall (WA), who I had seen perform last weekend in Perth. Gabrielle delivers her words in a darkly musical voice. Her poems brimming with equal parts beauty and menace. Her set was followed by fellow West Australian, Vivienne Glance and the man who is on a quest to become Australia’s first poet laureate, Ben Pobje. So with the first leg of the crawl setting the bar high, the crowd was whitled into action, and set off to Southpaw in pursuit of Santo Cazzati and the offerings of poems by Anthony O’Sullivan, Jenny Toune, Kimberley Mann & Sam Byfield. Sadly, Sheish and I had to miss Stop Two to rush back to The Nunnery, get our gear and head off to Blue Velvet to sound check for the the third and final stop for the night.

Third Stop Blue Velvet.

With the sound check done and the crowd squeezing in to the lounge-room sized back room, we hit the stage to open proceedings. No intros, no talking, just the sparkle of Sheish’s big red Kasuga brightening my poems. This was the teaser for Saturday night’s set, so we played only three poems Nomads, Ocean Hearted & Seeing a girl off in a summer storm. The room feel into that deep silence, and for those few minutes, the world seemed to close its eyes. We looked at each and smiled, eager to play an extended set tomorrow night. We were then followed by the be-helmeted Alex Scott and Bribane’s surrealist wildcard, Ghostboy. A Ghostboy set is something to behold. The crowd is just as much a part of the show as the man/ghoul/poet himself. Tonight Ghostboy tied one woman to a chair and incited another pair of ladies to passionately kiss on the carpet. He was on, the crowd lapped it up and he lapped the cheeks of several men in the audience.

We had taken to the streets and the streets had embraced us.

Saturday was the big one… tonight Sheish and I stretched our poetic riffs at the Bella Union Trades Hall, sharing the stage with tap-dancing poet Jenny Toune and the mighty Sean M. Whelan & the Interim Lovers. Jenny kicked things off with a show that blew away all my expectations. I have to admit, when I read tap-dancing poet, I wondered whether one of the art forms would suffer, but within minutes, she put all those concerns to rest. She had the moves and the words to make the stage light up. It was a great opening set and a real pleasure to have seen.

Sheish and I were up next, and champing at the mic. From the moment we plugged in, it felt good. We opened with Gutter & Edge which is on the forthcoming CD and the sound, lights and crowd were all in sync. From there we kicked in to Save Me/Lessons, Sheish showing off his full-throated growl, with me stepping in and out to punctuate the verses. It was then in to the newer poems, Sentinel and And What Voice Says. The dark guitar loop and lead flourishes giving And What Voice Says a whole new life. Sheish then pumped straight into the big open chords of Grounded before channeling Bootsy for a funky version of Oooo… We then reinterpreted old favourite In Devotion to Life’s Sordid Affairs and closed the set with Sheish tearing into the mic with his song Poetry and this Lost Shark, dropping in Point Danger between verses. It was a tight set, the interplay was good and we walked off stage, only to be called on for an encore. This is where the true brilliance of Sheish comes into play. I named a poem and he just knew the right chords… it was off the cuff, it was spontaneous and it was right. We walked off into bright lights of the Bella feeling good.

And to round off the night Sean M. Whelan & the Interim Lovers took to the stage unveiling a new set of poems, which reinterpret the Lewis Carrol classic, The Hunting of the Snark. Whelan is a gifted poet and performer. Tonight he swayed with the band’s subtle movements and writhed as they reached crescendo. The poems, never overshadowed by the band and the band… well, I was mesmerised. In fact I could have watched/listened to it all again. I look forward to seeing this project evolve.

And with MC Steve Smart, bringing the night to a close, we all stumbled off into glorious Lygon Steet for more wine, pizza and endless conversation.

During my time at Overload I also had the pleasure of seeing Eric Beach at The Dan; Santo Cazzati, Steve Smart & Carmen Main, Eddy Burger and Jo Truman & Warren Burt at Glitch Bar and launching Maurice McNamara’s debut collection, Half-Hour Country at Dantes (more about that soon).

There is something incredibly special that happens when poets come together… and this Lost Shark was once again, honoured to be a part of the poetry community. Sheish and I tip our hats to James Waller and crew for all their hard work. I hope you guys are still revelling in it.
