SUSAN Boyle shrugged off claims that she had a break down during her visit to America earlier this week as she signed autographs for fans outside her home in Blackburn.

The star has been pictured in tears as she was surrounded by fans in New York’s Rockefeller Centre, where she was doing a live performance for NBC’s Today show.

But she said that her trip had been “absolutely brilliant” as she proudly posed with her debut album.

Casually dressed in a cream jumper and sporting a black beret adorned with jewels to keep away the cold, the 48-year-old waved to passers-by on the narrow street where she lives.

Looking happy, she said that she hoped people would like her album.

I Dreamed a Dream is set to be number one in the album charts this weekend, after setting the highest first-day sales of the year with a whopping 130,000 copies flying off shelves.

And it is on track to beat the highest first-week sales of 375,872 for a debut album, which was set by Leona Lewis two years ago.

The CD is dedicated to the singer’s mother – Bridget Boyle who died in 2007 – and each song was chosen by SuBo because it had a special meaning.

Her management strongly denied that the Britain’s Got Talent performer had a breakdown whilst in the States, saying that she was overcome by emotion after receiving a quilt from fans.

A spokesman for Susan said: “She was just overjoyed and extremely touched with the reception she has had from everyone in America.”

JLo falls onstage...then pops up and keeps it moving

Last night,Dick Clark and ABC television hosted the annual American Music Awards, where all kind of crazy and cool happenings went on,and Lady Gaga and Adam Lambert still stood out.

I like it how every year some new act feels the need to shock and push the limits of the public morals to the breaking point, and this year the winner for that category is Adam Lambert.

Adam,the runner-up for last seasons American Idol competition,decided to out do Katy Perry who kissed a girl, or at least had a hit record about it, by kissing a guy on stage.

And, as if that was not enough to get his point across, he then grabbed a male dancer, and had him kiss,…or do something like that, to his crotch. Many guys have done this on stage before,except with women.

I think the best one was that awards show on Spike TV hosted by Jamie Foxx,when he grabbed Halle Berry’s nice behind and laid a good kiss on her…remember that.

…Oh yeah…as usual,like clockwork…Lady Gaga got down!…she is the most interesting performer out there currently, and whenever she performs…I simply can not take my eyes off of her,because of her performances.

She has way more concept than the rest of her fellow performers,and I can tell she is having a big influence on others stage shows. Good going Gaga….

… They better be. F1 see’s two back to back British champions for the first time in forty years, and also it seems that both of those British champions will be in the same British team, that’s the second oldest team in the sport. Not to mention the fact that it was an all British team (Brawn) that won both the Drivers and Constructers titles in 2009, and McLaren won the Drivers title in 2008. So it seems ridiculous to think that there may not be a British Grand Prix in 2010! Britain really is the heart of motorsport, so I hope that it all gets resolved, as the market for F1 in Britain clearly must be at a high that hasn’t been experienced for quite some time.

So in closing… Please Bernie, please don’t forget you and F1’s roots, and where it all belongs. Don’t let your ego and love for money get in the way.

Bosh and Superman are set to battle

I see you’re not gonna sit this one out with an “injury”, hey Vince? Alright, I’d be lying to myself if I said Carter didn’t love coming to Toronto and torching the Raptors. Air Canada and the Magic are in for the second time this season, tipping at 12:30 this afternoon at the ACC. As always, check out the full preview over at Raptors Republic.

I honestly believed coming into this season Orlando would be worse off with Carter than Hedo Turkoglu, but as much as it kills me to say it, I was wrong. Vince seems to have found the perfect scenario — one where he’s not pressured to be the top guy, or better yet, one where he can routinely take nights off and people won’t notice because Rashard Lewis and Superman will pick up the slack. Yeah, Turkoglu was killer in the clutch, but Vince has been known to hold up alright come crunch time when he feels like it. The Magic, behind Carter’s 18.1 points per game, come in at 10-3, including a 125-116 win in Toronto on Nov. 1.

As usual, the key for the Raptors will be D’ing up, especially on the perimeter against a team like Orlando. The Magic drilled 17 threes in their previous win over Toronto, and that came without Carter, who’s averaging almost three per game. Chris Bosh & co. will also do well to attack Dwight Howard early and try to get him in foul trouble.

Anyway, fresh off a home win over Miami Friday, it would be nice to make it two and a row with a walk in the park coming in the form of Indiana on Tuesday.

For a fifty year old film, The Nutty Professor doesn’t lose it touch. It retains a certain form of comedy that will still be enjoyed for years to come. This is also the first time I’ve seen a Jerry Lewis full length film. It was refreshing in a jesting sort of way.

If you’re familiar with the Eddie Murphy 1996 film The Nutty Professor, it borrows a lot of elements from the original. This time, the original, gives us the more slapstick acting of Jerry Lewis, who is also the director. For the youngsters out there, think of the slapstick movements of Jim Carrey, this is that brand of comedy.

It felt that this paved way for the funny opposites provided by the idea of the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde theme. In a humorous tone, Jerry Lewis provides and tells us that he can do two personalities at one time and at that time, it was quite a feat.

The film still provides us some fresh punch lines, probably because some of them were not re-used save for the exploding experiments reminiscent of those old school Looney Tunes animation. And at the same time, it also gives us a rather diminutive view of the brand of comedy of the era of the Marx Brothers.

I’ve always thought that Jerry Lewis films were lame but I was wrong after I’ve seen this.

Pocono Mountain Regional Police had five new police officers sworn into duty during the November Police Commission meeting.

Pocono Mountain Regional Police swore five new police officers into duty during the November Police Commission meeting.

In addition to the new hires, two officers were recently honored for their work in the department, according to Chief Harry Lewis. Lt. William Laverty and Officer Gary Gaus of the Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department were presented with an Act of Valor Award last month during a Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner held at The Chateau Resort and Conference Center, presented by Tri-State Troopers Fund Inc., Monroe County Crime Stoppers Association and the Greater Pocono Chamber of Commerce.

The act honored was for handling of an armed standoff that occurred in Tobyhanna Township with Michael Schaffer.

PMRPD officers were initially dispatched for a mental health commitment at the residence. When officers arrived, Schaffer began shooting at officers.

Gaus and Laverty, veteran SWAT officers, were able to help maintain a perimeter. They were just 15 feet from Schaffer when he began firing at them. Officers returned fire and hit Schaffer, who later died at Lehigh Valley Hospital.

Laverty’s and Gaus’ acts helped to resolve the situation with minimal loss of life and no injuries to any of the police officers.

On Nov. 10, Angella M. Tullo, Treasurer of the Tri-State Troopers Fund Inc., presented Gaus with a plaque for an Act of Valor Award for the same incident at the Pocono Mountain Regional Police Commission meeting as he was unable to attend the Tri-State Troopers Fund Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner where Laverty received his award.

Random thoughts

That would have to be one of the most expensive security cameras in the world to be able to show the flight of a bullet. We can have a think about what would actually be required with a back-of-the-envelope calculation:

At the slower end, a handgun bullet might travel at 300 m s^-1 (just under the speed of sound), and the horizontal distance covered by the camera when Astrid was clicking through video frames was about a metre (based on the size of August’s arm). The bullet travelled about 60 % of the distance, or 0.6 m, in three frames and so we can conclude that each frame lasted for about 0.00067 s, which is 1500 frames per second. By way of comparison, video cameras generally capture around 30 fps.

Once again we can see some old-school communication equipment; this time a dot matrix printer. I posit (Walterism) that communication between the two worlds is only possible with equipment that existed before the event that caused them to diverge. It therefore looks like the two timelines separated in the 1980s, right when Walter was retrieving Peter.

This is bordering on the obsessive, but if Flight 821 went down two hours out of Rome then it could not have been off the Italian coast and was probably not in the Atlantic Ocean. Either it was two hours away and in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Spain or Portugal (or possibly France), or it was in the Mediterranean Sea (or even the Tyrrhenian Sea – technically these are within the Atlantic Ocean, but they are always referred to by their localised names) and closer than two hours to Rome.

The photographs and paintings of The Observer at key points in history reminded me a little of James in 12 Monkeys (he’s shown in a WWI trench). Perhaps it’s also how J. Robert Oppenheimer got the idea for his hat.

As is fairly common knowledge, screw-on silencers (or, more correctly, suppressors) do not “silence” bullets very much at all.

The Lewis Code

We are treated to another chemistry-inspired code this week, this time to do with the Lewis structure of atoms. However, like the code in Earthling it’s pretty much impossible to decipher.

Different atoms have different numbers of electrons, and this is one of the ways we can tell different atoms apart (it’s called the atomic number). However, the Lewis bonding model is all about electrons in the outer shell of an atom (the valence electrons), which are not so unique. Each atom in a group (a vertical column in the periodic table) has the same number of valence electrons as the other atoms in the group – this is one of the reasons why those atoms have similar properties. This means that for every dot diagram that Walter noted, there would be at least four elements that it could match (and possibly six, depending on the group in question).

Firstly, Astrid’s code-cracking program would have picked up on some of the repeated symbols – for example, “7″, “As” and “N” are the same. Secondly, the numbers in the address do not seem to correspond to the number of electrons. It seems to be (number of electrons)+2 except in the case of “2″, though how Walter would know this is beyond me (perhaps there isn’t a 2536 Hastings). Thirdly, as I mentioned above, each symbol can represent different atoms (this is illustrated in the code with “As”/”N” and “Ti”/”Ge”). Walter would have found the address with a lot of trial and error, and could easily have gone to the wrong place – for example, by taking other elements in the same groups, we could make vaguely plausible names like “Kassipsis” (K-As-Si-P-Si-S).

A less ambiguous code?

On top of all that, titanium (Ti) is a transition metal and has partially filled d-orbitals. We do not normally describe transition elements using Lewis structures, as they tend to break the rules – this is one of the reasons why the Lewis model is not used very much in modern chemistry. Titanium does have four valence electrons, but it would be unlikely to come to mind from a Lewis four-electron diagram (though perhaps Walter thinks in unconventional ways).

In order to make the code clearer, there would have to be some method of either identifying the correct period (row), or identifying the number of electron sub-shells underneath the valence shell (though of course this would also make it easier for someone else to decipher). I propose a second symbol (inside the large circle) to identify the electron shell that is being filled, and more dots to identify the correct period. Thus an empty circle would be interpreted as a number, a second circle (s-orbital) as groups I and II, a looped cross (d-orbital) as groups III-XII and a figure of eight (p-orbital) as groups XIII-XVII. The code would then look like the second diagram on the left – more complex but unambiguous.

Thought I’d add some rich colours to this blog and as it’s Autumn there’s plenty of gorgeous rich tones around.  The following shots are of the same leaf  taken at the Tropical Gardens in Abbotsbury in Dorset.  They flood light part of the gardens for a month, so I thought I’d try some night photography – luckily it wasn’t windy!

C.S. Lewis wrote the Chronicles of Narnia, declaring that these books were “not an allegory.”  While not all of his stories may have Biblical parallels, his depiction of Aslan, the “untamed lion” who rules above all other rulers, has pointed many to a better understanding of the Lord.

A couple of weeks ago, I took myself to a coffeeshop, with my computer, headphones, a journal, and no agenda.  I was feeling frazzled and stressed, and empty.  Mentally, physically, even spiritually– I was worn out.  I did what I should have done a couple of weeks before, before I passed my limits, and went away for some alone time to reflect and relax (but mostly to relax, honestly ). 

Days earlier some people had been prayed for me that I would hear God speak to me in a way I could receive (just a sense of His presence, a word of encouragement from someone, an insight into Scripture– that would be nice, I thought)– and I didn’t get it.  “Why don’t You speak, Lord?” I wondered before Him, sipping my half hot chocolate/half  coffee (my favorite).  “Why don’t You just zap me and make me what I should be?”

I had been listening to Pandora, an internet radio station that lets you plug in your favorite artists, and then plays artists that are similar.  A song came on that I had never heard before– called “Aslan.”  God was singing His response:

Our God is untamed, and will not do things according to my plan.  Oh, He is good, though.  Even when He cuts deep– a time in life when He wants us to boldly risk things, and understand that talk is cheap– we can be at peace knowing that He never leaves a wounded one behind.  He is not controllable– but He is good.
