I guess it started some time ago when we reviewed the excellent Bye Bye Standby system on TakTikTech. This efficient and simple device appealed to my gadget mentality wonderfully – using one switch to control a multitude of devices all the way around the home (and saving you a small fortune in electricity at the same time!)… Perhaps I’ve always had a penchant for ‘remote control’ / wireless but as the years have passed and technology has leapt forward in leaps and bounds, the potential for this mentality and indeed lifestyle is gathering momentum.

Recently we also sent CB off to explore the newly launched PowerMat (which I’ve still to get my hands on personally) which enables you to drop your phone on to the mat and stroll off. Your phone will re-charge automatically. No more scrapping around by the bedside searching for that trailing wire – or if like me you need to charge a couple of phones and a bluetooth headset, scrapping around for a whole stack of tangled infuriations. Blah.

A good percentage of us have our computers, printers already running wirelessly throughout our property and even bounce photographs from our mobiles to these other devices via bluetooth.
My Jabra Halo system keeps me company completely wirelessly on both Skype and my mobiles as I stroll about making coffee and doing the washing up!

Meanwhile, Annalisa – our wonderfully blunt and super successful Italian reviewer – has just popped a “Drop ‘N’ Charge’ wi-fi XBox 360 / Wii remote system through its paces too.

The World is quietly going wi-fi, even in the home. Much of the above is of course relatively frivolous and non-essential except that many products are also eco-friendly which gives me great heart – but there’s a more serious side to all of this too.
Our security for homes is also going both wi-fi and remote. Now you can install webcams into each room and remotely view who is accessing your property and when. If your child is prone to sleep-walking or nightmares, in minutes you can set up a motion sensing tracking camera that lets you know when there’s a problem, is just a very simple but reassuring example.
Home broken in to? Pull up the program on your mobile phone and watch the action via a live feed from the webcams you’ve got dotted about the place. These systems have already helped numerous friends of mine combat crime.

Presently, much of the gadgetry required is billed fairly expensively but if DIY is your thing, you’d be amazed how much you can achieve, from scheduling your heating to turn on, security lights to come to life – and in some cases now, this technology control is available via your iPhone! Ten years ago wi-fi and remote control of your property remained firmly in the homes of the very real Mr Bill Gates and the charming James Bond of 007 fame but mark my words, the wi-fi home will soon become standard – and I’m rather looking forward to it.

A new industry benchmark, the 100% polyester toner offers superior fusing in high speed applications, even on label stock and heavy paper.

FGIC offers two combinations, depending on what is more critical to the remanufacturer.

For example, for yield, FGIC recommends item number OPTRASMKIHYPNPE (high yield OPC).

For customers who require bold text, the OPTRASMKIPNPE (standard yield OPC) is recommended.

Thoroughly tested at the FGIC Research and Development facility, both density and yield are comparable to the OEM (call your sales rep for test data).

The FGIC toner and OPC for remanufactured Lexmark T640 are in stock now and ship from convenient locations all over the globe.

Symptoms: Print jobs don’t delete from the print queue after they are finished. Restarting the computer will allow the next job to print, after which the queue stops again.

Steps to reproduce: Install Lexmark’s printer software on a Windows Vista computer. Try to print more than one document. Get ticked off because Lexmark doesn’t have any solution on their website.

Printers affected: The list goes on and on—models X1270, X5130, X5150, X6100, X6150, and several others all seem to be affected. In general, if your printer seems to be having the symptoms above, then this solution might work for you. I have only tested this solution with the X6150, and your mileage may vary.

Solution:

Phase 1: Eliminate all Lexmark software/drivers

1. Disconnect the USB cable to the printer and open up the Control Panel. Go to Programs and Features and find the Lexmark software for your printer. Uninstall it. If it gives you any problems, try opening up Printers (under Control Panel), right-click on the Lexmark printer, and select “Cancel All Documents”. If they don’t delete right away, restart your computer. You may need to connect the printer again to finish deleting the jobs from the queue. Make sure you disconnect the printer before trying to uninstall the Lexmark software again.
2. Restart your computer.
3. Go to Start, type in “cmd” (without the quotes), right click on “cmd.exe” and choose “Run as Administrator”. Type in “printmanagement.msc” and press Enter.
4. Go to Action->Manage Drivers. If any Lexmark drivers are listed, click on each one and click “Remove…” In the window that appears, choose “Remove driver and driver package”. When you’ve finished removing any drivers, you can close the Print Management window.
5. At this point, we should be rid of any leftover Lexmark crap. If you’re feeling extra cautious, you could go through and check your Program Files for any remnants, and maybe reboot your computer again.

Phase 2: Reinstall drivers, the right way

1. Okay, now this is the important part. We want to reinstall the printer drivers without using the Lexmark installer. First, download the appropriate drivers for your printer from Lexmark’s website. Make sure you choose the Vista drivers and also make sure you choose x32 or x64 drivers, depending on which version of Vista you are running. As of writing, this page allows you to locate the drivers for your printer. Lexmark’s download descriptions tend to be a bit confusing, so read carefully.
2. Once you’ve downloaded the correct installer, go ahead and run it, but don’t go through the installation! When the installer starts, cancel out of it. If everything has gone well, we should be left with a new folder located at C:\drivers\printer\[insert your model here].
3. Now we’re ready to plug in the printer. When you plug in the printer, Windows will try to locate the drivers for it. There are two possible outcomes: Windows searches Windows Update and finds the correct driver, in which case we need do nothing more; and the second outcome, Windows can’t find the correct driver, in which case we need to point it to the one we downloaded.
4. At the first “Found New Hardware” screen, choose “Locate and install driver software”. If you are asked whether to search online, choose “Yes, search online this time only”. If the window “Windows couldn’t find driver software…” appears, choose “Browse my computer for driver software” and navigate to C:\drivers\printer\[insert your model here]. Make sure that “Include subfolders” is checked. Windows should then recognize and install the driver from that location.
5. If everything goes successfully, you should now have a working printer. Try to print out a few documents and make sure it is working. If so, congratulations! You’ve managed to get your printer working with Vista. If not, read on for some more troubleshooting advice.

Still having trouble?

If your printer still isn’t working at this point, there are a few more things to try:

• Disable the Lexmark printer spooler service and make Window’s spooler the default. To do this, press Ctrl-Alt-Del and choose “Start Task Manager”. Go to the Services tab, and click on the Services button at the bottom right. Scroll through the list and see if you can find a service called “lexbce” or any other reference to Lexmark. If you find such a service, right-click on it, go to Properties, and change the Startup Type to “Disabled”. Next go to Start, type in cmd, right-click on “cmd.exe” and choose “Run as Administrator”. In the window that appears, type “sc config spooler depend= rpcss” (without the quotes, with a space after depend= ), and press Enter. Restart your computer and try printing again.
• Make sure that bidirectional support is enabled. To do this, open Control Panel and go to Printers. Right-click on the printer, and choose “Properties”. Go to the Ports tab, and make sure the box is checked next to “Enable bidirectional support”. Restart your computer and try printing again.
• Restart the print spooler after each job. You can do this by going to Start, typing in “services.msc” and pressing Enter. Find “Print Spooler” on the list, right-click and choose Restart.

Conclusion

If you’re still having trouble, then you’re probably stuck with working around your problem (restart your computer after each print) or buying a different printer.

If you have a chance, feel free to call Lexmark and complain. They’ve done a crappy job with their drivers, and haven’t even addressed this and other problems on their website. Even though they claim that their printers are “Windows Vista Compatible”, the printers don’t work at all or only work after some workaround. Either Lexmark needs to fix its software/drivers so that they work out of the box, or they need to stop calling their printers “Vista Compatible”.

I’ve used the standard color cartridge Lexmark #33 factory (OEM) Color Print Cartridge for lots of photos, with excellent results, but I noticed I had to lighten the images in an image editor before printing them.Even without that step, the photos came out well.With the Photo ink cartridge, that is not a problem; the brightness of the image is fine, and it seems the colors are slightly more true.But unless I had two prints of the same photo, one printed with the standard 33 cartridge, one with this 31 cartridge, it would be hard to tell the difference.

This color ink cartridge was shipped quickly.It provides great print quality whether printing documents or photos on my Lexmark X3430 printer that uses only this color cartridge.It is much easier to order the printer cartridges online than to try to find them in local stores.

I just purchased a Lexmark Z32 which came with this cartridge as well asthe 17G0060 color cartridge.This is my third inkjet printer and BY FARthe best.I’ve had an Epson and a Canon that were ok but this Lexmark isincredible.I realize this review is for the black cartridge only (sorry). I know everyone out there sees “laser quality” or “laserlike” in reference to inkjets lately but this one truly is.The blacktext and lines from this cartridge are dark, crisp, and virtually withoutany bleed or feathering.An excellent product.

Blame it on Apple. I am saying this in a nice way.  Perhaps there are other who came ahead of Apple when it comes to touch screen technology but Apple definitely made it cool. After the iTouch and iPhone, mobile phones and other gadgets has embraced the touch screen technology. It’s not really surprising then that printers should also be “touchable”.

I think what is more surprising is who came away with it first. Lexmark’s T656DNE is believed to be the world’s first printer to utilize touch screen technology in navigating its functions and applications. I wonder why the likes of HP and Canon did not race Lexmark on this one.

It remains to be seen if this sophistication would be a demand among users. The close to 2 grand price tag of the T656DNE might turn off buyers as well. More than the hoopla on touch screen, the T656DNE offers a whole lot of other features that might justify its price.

Being a pioneer is a two-edge sword. But I have a feeling Lexmark did well.
