DETROIT (AP) — The Tesla Motors Inc. Model S electric car has tied an older Lexus for the highest score ever recorded in Consumer Reports magazine’s automotive testing.

The Model S, which starts at $62,400 after a federal tax credit, scored 99 points on a scale of 100 in the magazine’s battery of tests.

“It accelerates, handles and brakes like a sports car. It has the ride and quietness of a luxury car and is far more energy-efficient than the best hybrid cars,” Jake Fisher, the magazine’s director of automotive testing, said Thursday in a statement.

The magazine tested a Model S that cost $89,650 and was equipped with an 85 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery that’s larger than the standard battery. The car went from zero to 60 mph in only 5.6 seconds. The magazine said it handled like a Porsche sports car, yet it was the quietest car it had tested since the Lexus LS. The interior, the magazine said, was beautifully crafted and reminded testers of an Audi.

Consumer Reports found that the Model S had a range of about 180 miles on cold winter days and 225 miles in moderate temperatures, far higher than other pure electric cars that go 75 or 80 miles on a single charge. Tesla says the 85 kwh battery-car can go 300 miles at 55 mph.

Charging the Model S costs about $9 at the national average of 11 cents per kilowatt-hour, the magazine said, making the car equal to running a conventional vehicle on gasoline that costs $1.20 per gallon, Consumer Reports said. The magazine calculated that the Model S got the gasoline equivalent of 84 miles per gallon.

The Model S, though, didn’t get Consumer Reports’ coveted “Recommended Buy” rating because the magazine doesn’t have sufficient data to judge reliability of the car, which went on sale last year.

The car was not without shortcomings. Consumer Reports said its drawbacks include limited range, long charging times and coupe-like styling that hinders rear visibility and crimps passenger access. The magazine also was concerned about buying a car from a startup company with no track record of reliability or resale value and a “skimpy (although growing) service network.”

The Model S tied a Lexus 460L full-size luxury car tested in 2007 for the record score.

The all-new 2014 Lexus IS sedans will feature an all-new multimedia system with a remote touch interface and will deliver real-time traffic and weather information over the air for free.

Lexus has made $1,400 worth of equipment that was optional in previous IS models standard in the new luxury sedans, including HID headlamps, L-shaped LED daytime running lights, Drive Mode Select, paddle shifters, a dual-zone climate control system, a next-generation Remote Touch Interface, Display Audio, a color 4.2-inch TFT multi-information display, and 10 airbags, while pricing the new Lexus IS 350 2.1 percent lower than its predecessor.

The revamped in-vehicle multimedia system features a 7-inch VGA multi-display as the centerpiece, providing drivers with climate, audio, and navigation information. The display can be operated via a Display Audio controller, which can access Info, Setup, Display, Media, Climate, and Phone screens, or by way of the carmaker’s new Remote Touch system featuring a next-generation haptic joystick.

The in-vehicle information system also features what Lexus describes as “advanced voice recognition” enabled by a new dual-microphone system and voice box built on the latest Nuance voice recognition software platform. The system searches a navigation point-of-interest (POI) database to conduct local search and Microsoft’s Bing for Internet search through a connected smartphone app.

Lexus is billing the free, HD radio-supplied weather and traffic info accessible in the 2014 IS sedan as an “industry-first application.” The same information service was previously provided via Sirius XM but required a subscription. Customers will have the option to add the Lexus Enform App Suite to their system, which uses cellular connectivity to provide weather and traffic info when out of HD Radio coverage range, and also includes fuel price, stock market, and sports updates.

Lexus’ RX has had an interesting history, with different tales on both sides of the Atlantic.

Lexus’ RX has had an interesting history, with different tales on both sides of the Atlantic. Being based on the all-conquering Toyota Camry, the RX’s blend of luxury, reliability and semi-rugged appearance has meant that the car has been a runaway success. All 3 generations have been top sellers in the crossover sector and in fact is the Lexus that sells most numbers-wise. In Europe however, the lack of a diesel has always meant that the RX has been a niche model…buyers claim that the first and second generation models were the highest selling petrol SUV’s in the UK, but given the tiny proportion of buyers who go for the thirstier models this is hardly surprising. The hybrid model was introduced in 2005 and from then the lion’s share sold were the 400h model, and with the introduction of the 3rd generation in 2009, the petrol model was dropped and only ’450h’ model remains.

the current RX

I have already touched on the RX’s origins, and in other posts I have talked about how it was the first car-based luxury SUV to be launched (pre BMW X5). The first generation model looked quite similar to the Mercedes ML, with a slanted C Pillar and truck-like design. I actually find the original very attractive, if a little dated in certain areas like the grille. It’s interior even holds up well and being a Lexus it will definitely be reliable. Yet although a decent model can be had for a mere £4,000 (for a 2002 model), the V6 petrol only gets about 20mpg…and then there are the horrific mirrored rear windows which look a mess.

90′s original

The second generation RX was launched in 2003 and blends certain aspects of the original with a softer, more futuristic look. It is this more feminine aspect along with the predominantly petrol powered models which has put me off the RX before, but the 400h has recently entered my budget and so I decided to take a look online at reviews and videos etc, and it quickly became a strong competitor to be my next car choice…to the extent that I told my Nan that she’d be climbing up into a Lexus into a few months! Why is this? Well the Lexus possesses loads of qualities which the majority of competitors in this category don’t.

Probably most important to me is reliability, yes a bit boring but if an X5 broke down and needed a £4k new gearbox I simply would not be able to afford it. Obviously any luxury car won’t be fault free but buying a Lexus seriously reduces the risk. Second there is the hybrid engine; I’ll accept that the 35 mpg fuel estimate is abit unrealistic but 30+ should be attainable, and the ability to cruise around on electric-only power is something that really appeals. Performance is an extra bonus, and 7.9 seconds 0-60 is faster than any other vehicle I’m considering, but despite this insurance isn’t that expensive. Lastly are the equipment levels; all RX400h’s come with heated leather seats and the majority come with an electric tailgate(!) and sat nav/rear view camera…a rear DVD system is abit more rare but not really something I am interested in.

So we’re looking at a freshly (if feminine) styled car, reliable, well-equipped and reasonably cheap to run. Negatives? Well a couple of easy to explain ones are the high price, or rather the fact that cars in my price range are a little higher mileage than I’d like and also a bit thin on the ground-so I might have to travel to find the car I want (and also settle for less desirable equipment/colours). But my main problem with the Lexus is…erm that its a Lexus. The Japanese brand suffers from the same sleepy image as Honda and Toyota, and the traditional RX buyer is probably over 50 (at least) and female. For the average buyer this might not be a problem, but for a 22/23 year old male it is a reason to be hesitant.

I would definitely like to test drive an RX400h, just to see how I get along with the CVT gearbox, handling and hybrid drive. On that front handling reportedly abit soft (although the ride is meant to be good) and the gearbox is bearable…but this still pales in significance to the issues I might have with the car’s image.

I often tell my clients; whatever product or service you are promoting, your desired prospects are searching for you on the Internet - right now. Whatever the product; frozen mice (real example), hotel rooms (real example) or used Lexus cars (another real example). The customers are there, on the Internet, looking, now.

Our system attracts prospects for you.

For example: We set up a marketing campaign for Lexus last year that now produces 2100 PA interested buyers of used Lexus cars. They read a page that interests them on average for over six minutes. 220 PA of those visitors are sufficiently interested and are delivered to their site. We can ‘tweak’ the offer on the page to ‘tip-in’ more buyers. The better the offer the better the response. The offers can be flexed depending on the desire for a new client and seasonal changes.

Our system works with any product or service. It works well in-line with the new Google Penguin and Panda algorithm adjustments too.

Starter campaigns are available from £250 and fully scalable.

Are full size sedans about to join body-on-frame SUVs (Expedition, Tahoe) and lose market share to other segments? Was it a mistake for GM and Toyota to spend R&D money on the new Impala and Avalon? Why are they losing sales to other segments?

The popularity of large sedans will have a slow decline into irrelevancy given current market trends. These poor dinosaurs are coming under attack from every side. Even taking into account that many cars in the segment are no longer fresh (Taurus, Genesis, 300, Maxima), there appears to be a market shift taking place.

Mid-size sedans have started taking over now that many have grown in size to fit American tastes. This is one of the segments that can lay claim of being all things to all people. Over the years, mid-size cars have grown in size, features, and price. They now top out at over $30K. Mid-size sedans now offer enough passenger and cargo space that the increased cost of a large sedan, which start at 30K, are not worthwhile.

Once you hit 30K, a psychological barrier, you are now in luxury car territory, occupied by entry level luxury cars such as the Lexus ES, Mercedes C Class, or the Acura TL. Without going into psychology or economics, I believe more people would prefer a slightly smaller entry level luxury car over a larger mainstream sedan. Large mainstream sedans are no longer aspirational like they were in the past. Moving up now means moving up to a different brand, even if it’s with the same company.

Finally, families are embracing crossovers like never before. Sedans will never offer the cargo space, flexibility , or ground clearance of an SUV/Crossover, no matter how large they become. Americans will not embrace the wagon any time soon either. Most midsize crossovers such as the Explorer, Traverse, or the Highlander* also start at the 30K mark. They offer AWD, ground clearance, and most importantly, S P A C E for stuff. Americans love their stuff, and we need places to put our stuff. I’ll stop here before I go too deep into our hoarding culture, but you get the idea.

* That is the actual 2014 Highlander.

Large sedans are under attack from above, below, and even from the side. All three of these segments are rapidly growing and taking sales from large sedans. Automakers might even begin to phase them out or put in fewer resources to update them in future generations. I haven’t heard any news on the next Maxima and Honda doesn’t even offer a full-size sedan. The market is still formidable, but is rapidly losing relevance.

I am an avid reader of EcoTextile News, it’s where I glean most of the info I learn regarding

I am an avid reader of EcoTextile News, it’s where I glean most of the info I learn regarding all things sustainable/ethical within the textile/fashion/retail industry, worldwide.

In any event, I was reading a story about Hong Kong’s fourth annual “Eco Chic Design Award” a competition organized by Hong Kong based NGO Redress challenging designer applicants to “convince consumers that sustainable fashion can be the norm, using design techniques that eliminate textile waste, and upcycle or reconstruct materials.” (EcoTextiles, 2013)

Sounds awesome right? Of course it does, and we Westerners have our current eco-design competition as well (i.e., CFDA/Lexus Eco-fashion challenge) all of which imply a global push to promote environmental sustainability in the fashion industry.

However, it was something that Redress’ CEO, Christina Dean, said that truly stuck out to me, making me ponder its stark truth: “Sustainability in the fashion industry is an over-discussed but under-actioned issue…“

This sent chills down my spine as I read each convicting word.

I’m sure many will read this and become bewildered as to why chose this qupte when the preceding paragraphs indicate the “action” being taken through these design challenges. Which is true, but, to me it leans more towards the “discussion” side because the implementation is rarely applied. I believe Eco-design innovation can become “actionable” not only when used as a catalyst to convince consumers of its sustainable viability but empowering to consumers who can use their purchasing power to safeguard such implementation through regulatory measures imposed by government. Safe fabrics, clean water, environmental protection shouldn’t be a privilege…but a RIGHT!

Therefore, I wholeheartedly encourage designers to continue their innovative quest to eliminate waste from their design/production framework, however, I believe the onus is on us (the consumer) to not merely be convinced, but convicted to support their work.

(The Grand Prize: Winner designs a line for Espirit, that will be retailed globally.)

(This is my vintage Espirit sweatshirt, I was very pleased when the company pledged to eliminate waste from their supply chain by 2020, in response to Greenpeace’s Detox Fashion Campaign)

“I have a Benz S550 …and I live in an apartment.”

I wonder how or why some people have chosen to do this?

Why would you choose to spend more than $100,000 on a car, rather than buy …a house?”

Surely, some people have more money than they know what to do with and buying a rare or expensive this and that shows their ‘status’ I guess you might say…. but this guy? He lives in an apartment relatively close to the station, I’m sure their rent is more than 100,000 yen/month. But why?

I could even imagine their friends think the same.

\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///

On a similar note, the other day after I went hiking, on the way home, I saw a Lexus LFA. Seriously. No, really I swear I did. I didn’t have my camera ready, or phone out to take a picture, but it definitely was an LFA. A yellow one even.

I think it was this one…

….

I also watched it on YouTube.. at least I’m pretty sure it was this one. How many yellow Lexus LFA’s could there be in Japan??

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iST6IafCJFo

….

Then I looked at Lexus’s webpage for the details about the car…

And I thought, wow.. that’s kind of expensive. Wait.. that’s really fu**ing expensive!! 37.5 million yen.

$375,000 dollars?

2012 Lamborghini Aventador $397,500 ~

2012 Ferrari 458 Italia $236,000

2013 Bugatti Veyron 16-4 Grand Sport Vitesse $2,250,000 ~

–==–==–==–==–==–==–==–==–

You could buy a pretty decent house instead of buying an LFA. You could pay twice that much and live in a REALLY nice house in Yokohama, or a nearly the same spec’d house as mine but in the middle of Tokyo (or residential Tokyo)

Case in point…

This house in Tokyo, actually a residential part of Tokyo (Setagaya, renown for being an expensive area), is going for 87.8 million yen.

It’s about a 10 minute walk to the nearest station (Chitosekarasuyama 千歳烏山) (my station is also a 10 minute walk! Granted it takes only 15 minutes to Shinjuku from this house, whereas it takes me about 50 minutes!… but I don’t work in Tokyo either, so….)

It’s just over 104 square meters (land plot size) and the building structure size is roughly the same (103 sq.m) (This house is only slightly bigger than my house by about 4 sq.m)

Floor plan of the house. (the second floor looks identical to my house!)

Really poor quality picture of the living room, dining and kitchen. (From the looks of it, the first floor doesn’t look too much bigger than my first floor!)

–==–==–==–==–==–==–

I’m sure glad I didn’t buy a ridiculously expensive car instead of a house.

And I’m not sure I quite see the value of this house either. I’m quite happy I didn’t spend that much on a house either.

You can buy !WeatherTech Custom Fit Rear FloorLiner for Lexus LX470/Toyota Land Cruiser (Black) Shops & Purchase Online. Product Description In the quest for the most advanced concept in floor protection, the talented designers and engineers at MacNeil Automotive have worked tirelessly to develop the most advanced DigitalFit floor protection available today. WeatherTech FloorLiner Mats are designed to keep your interior carpet clean, with quality floor protection proudly designed, engineered and manufactured in the USA. Precision-crafted, rugged, and available in multiple colors All-Weather Floor Protection The WeatherTech FloorLiner DigitalFit accurately and completely lines the interior carpet giving absolute interior protection. Digital laser measurements of interior surfaces offer a consistently perfect fit. A patent pending High-Density Tri-Extruded (HDTE) material allows for a rigid core for strength while offering surface friction to the carpet, as well as tactile feel to the surface. Advanced surfacing creates channels that carry fluids and debris to a lower reservoir with further channeling to help minimize fluid movement while driving. Once fluids become trapped in the reservoir, away from shoes and clothing, they are easily removed from the WeatherTech FloorLiner DigitalFit over the door sill…no muss, no fuss. Simple to Install WeatherTech FloorLiner mats are simple to install, with grommet holes that match the factory carpet in your vehicle. Note: FloorLiner is designed for vehicles with factory carpet installed when manufactured. They will not fit vehicles with vinyl floors unless otherwise specified. Please take your old floor mats out before installing your new WeatherTech FloorLiner. Protect Your Investment FloorLiner protects the resale value of your vehicle, too. Simply put, the cost of owning a vehicle is the difference between what you pay for it and what you sell it for. There are many factors that influence resale value; miles, exterior condition, maintenance history and of course interior condition. FloorLiner mats protect against some of the most common causes of interior damage, helping to keep your investment in good shape for years to come. Warranty The WeatherTech FloorLiner is guaranteed against faulty materials and workmanship for a period of three years from the date of purchase. Exclusions to this warranty are wear due to severe abrasive conditions and chemical contamination, such as spilled gasoline, bleach, etc. Depending on the situation, MacNeil Automotive will either replace your FloorLiner at no charge or charge you a prorated amount for a replacement. Tag : @$@WeatherTech Custom Fit Rear FloorLiner for Lexus LX470/Toyota Land Cruiser (Black), $WeatherTech Custom Fit Rear FloorLiner for Lexus LX470/Toyota Land Cruiser (Black), #WeatherTech Custom Fit Rear FloorLiner for Lexus LX470/Toyota Land Cruiser (Black), *%WeatherTech Custom Fit Rear FloorLiner for Lexus LX470/Toyota Land Cruiser (Black)

(Googlers turned Sergey Brin’s Tesla Model S into a pink Batmobile for April Fool’s Day)

According to a report from Bloomberg, Tesla’s Elon Musk has discussed with Google the possibility of adding self driving vehicle technology to its fleet of all-electric cars. The problem, says Musk, is that Google’s approach to the technology is currently too expensive compared to camera-based systems:

“The problem with Google’s current approach is that the sensor system is too expensive,” Musk said. “It’s better to have an optical system, basically cameras with software that is able to figure out what’s going on just by looking at things… “We’ve had some technical discussions with Google” about its Light Detection and Ranging, or Lidar, laser tracking system, Musk said last week, noting that it’s an expensive approach that may not prove feasible, Musk said.

Am a fan of Larry, Sergey & Google in general, but self-driving cars comments to Bloomberg were just off-the-cuff. No big announcement here—
Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 07, 2013

While it’s possible Google could contribute to bringing the driverless features to future Tesla vehicles, Musk told Bloomberg it’s more likely the company will develop its own “autopilot system”. That’s something that other automakers are already doing with Toyota, Lexus, and Audi all showing off self-driving car technology at CES back in January:

“I think Tesla will most likely develop its own autopilot system for the car, as I think it should be camera-based, not Lidar-based,” Musk said yesterday in an e-mail. “However, it is also possible that we do something jointly with Google.”

Unconfirmed reports from earlier this year suggested that Tesla was possibly prepping vehicles to be used as Google self-driving vehicles. Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page were originally investors in Tesla before the company went public in 2010, and just last month Brin was spotted driving his Tesla Model S near Google HQ (pictured above).

Last year Nevada became the first to issue a license to Google for testing of its autonomous vehicles on the city streets, while since other states have passed driverless car legislation supporting Google’s effort to bring its self-driving cars to public roads.

Well – the reason I called this Part 3.5 is because it’s not good enough to be a part IV and I want so bad to make sure that part IV is the car dropped on the ground and part V to be the finale, the creme de le creme, the cherry on top – the wheels finally on the car and ready for Driven. Jackie is aiming for tomorrow night for it to be done. I stopped by quick with Diana to see if we could help wrap the trunk piece all over again since it had to be ripped off to bolt everything down. The fabric was catching and in retrospect, we should’ve glued it down. Those of you doing air installs – remember that haha.

Anyways here are some quick pics I snapped.

You can see the e-level wires hanging. They are routed.

The rear. These wires are so damn long for some reason…

The front.

A shot of the front where Jackie replaced the 90 degree angle air valve to a straight one to prevent rubbing on the inside wells. Love it.

The board with the tank tied down and the compressors bolted down. The VU4 and ECU need to be bolted down as well. Holes have been drilled to route the air lines and wiring as well.

On the way home. Got a shot of Diana’s car randomly. We slapped her wheels on finally today and it looks great. The Meisters were meant to be on the Fit. So good.

Anyways – tomorrow my sister is dropping my wheels off at Urban X South for Gary and Cort to mount them because my tires came in today. In the evening, I’ll be going to pick them up and then heading over to Jackie’s. I’m hoping that we’re on time and I can drive it home tomorrow. I know Jackie doesn’t want to look at another air suspension set up again and I don’t want it hanging there anymore so it’ll be a win win. I hope to have a good update tomorrow for you guys. Instagram will probably be the first place I update – so check in the evening!
