I must admit. I am a mobile phone freak. I almost always get hooked to the latest in telecom gadgetr

I must admit. I am a mobile phone freak. I almost always get hooked to the latest in telecom gadgetry during special occasions when I have the extra fund to buy one. I’ve had continuing flings with Nokia, Samsung, LG and the iPhone 3G (which keeps me company without fail) but the search for the perfect partner hasn’t reached (or will ever reach) the end. This Christmas, it won’t be any different because I have a new toy.

It’s the Blackberry Bold 9000. This is not the first time that I entered into a relationship with Blackberry. The first one, though, was relatively forgettable because the unit I had lacked the features I enjoy using in a cellphone. But not this one. From the moment I laid my eyes on the ‘Bold’ and started tinkering with it, everything worked like a charm.

The (pre-stored) images are the clearest and crispest I’ve ever seen in a handset. And that is just the beginning. After migrating my Smart regular account to a Blackberry, I started to experience true ‘push email’ features. No need to access the internet or find a wi-fi hotspot to promptly get my emails (from between 1-10 free email accounts on the net). The messages come automatically pouring into my unit. But wait, there’s more. The applications (although not as varied and numerous as the iPhone 3G’s) get synchronized as well. My Facebook account gets regularly tapped so the contents in my inbox appear in a jiffy. The camera (only 2mp), though, can dampen anyone’s spirit if taking pictures is a top priority. But since I have my Nokia NSeries for that function, this concern is no biggy. By the way, it’s a quad-band phone so worldwide roaming is right at your fingertips.

The size can be another annoying factor to some. Not me. I’ve gotten used to using handsets that practically cover my entire palm area. I actually prefer using the QWERTY keyboards since I type messages faster that way. And with the sensitive and glistening trackball in the middle, navigating the whole thing is quite a breeze!

However, the battery life could be better. I can opt to switch off the 3G and wi-fi signals if I want to make one full charging last for three days, but I’m currently into a 2-day mode. There’s also an option to automatically switch off the device during certain parts of the day (like when you’re in deep slumber) to save on batt.

Over-all, I am more than happy with my new toy. I was supposed to get the Blackberry Curve (which is significantly cheaper) but it’s a good thing my supplier ran out of stock. True, I ended shelling out more for the ‘Bold’ although after further analysis, this one is definitely a better buy.

The two loves of my digital life - the Blackberry Bold and the iPhone 3G

The Blackberry is not for everyone. And I don’t just mean the price. It tends to cater to a select group which finds enjoyment in using a wide-bodied handset with QWERTY keypads. But I’m not giving up on iPhone 3G. I love both devices and have assigned them to be my two permanent love affairs.

P.S. If you’re on Blackberry as well, you can directly send me messages via: norman@smart.ap.blackberry.net

The world’s second largest LCD maker in the world, LG, has designed the thinnest HDTV in the world, measuring 2.6mm (or 0.1 inch) thick. LG showed off a working 42 and 47″ HDTV that weighs 4 kilograms, making this HDTV ideal for mounting on just about any wall.

The 42″ panel weighs less than 4 kilograms, runs at 120Hz refresh rate, and displays full 1080p (1920×1080) resolution. The two HDTV’s are as thin as two American dimes and use LED-lit backlight and proprietary optical film technology for the display.

LG has improved over their previous 5.9mm HDTV, making this the world’s thinnest consumer product, but the TV will not be for sale, just yet. LG will show off their LED-lit backlight HDTV at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2010 in Las Vegas.

This PC World reviewer raves about the top of the line LG Blu-ray player stating:

The images it delivered to an HDTV were among the best we’ve ever seen. And with support for BD-Live, CinemaNow, DLNA, Netflix On Demand, Wi-Fi, and YouTube, the BD390 provides top-flight networking capabilities.

However, just the only thing he finds lacking is the built-in Wifi networking:

Speaking of poor video quality, the BD390 is one of two Blu-ray players we’ve seen with built-in Wi-Fi (the other is the Sony BDP-S560). This is a convenience for viewing BD-Live and YouTube content, but unless you have an exceptionally strong signal, we would advise against using Wi-Fi for CinemaNow or Netflix. When we tried it, we noticed a serious drop in image quality.

If that’s not screaming for a wired home network connection, either Ethernet or MoCA, to the living room – expect to hear more. Stay tuned for more news from CES on why MoCA is THE way to go for networking to the Home Theater.

Eric Zeman pieced together some CES 2010 meeting requests and deduced that Sprint could be introducing an LG handset that runs Windows Mobile and supports WiMAX. Eric’s a bright cookie and has his pulse on the phone market, so I’m inclined to agree with him. Last year Sprint (s s) had a big CES splash with the introduction of Palm’s Pre (s palm), and the carrier needs something big for this year’s show. It all makes sense to me — a capable smartphone that supports Sprint’s investment in Clearwire (s clwr) and the national 4G network. Such a phone would surely use 3G when outside of the 4G coverage area, just like the new hybrid USB adapter that Sprint is offering. Hopefully, a plan for this smartphone offers unlimited 4G usage to supplement the 5 GB cap on the 3G network. Even better would be the ability to tether the phone for use as a WiMAX modem — Windows Mobile (s msft) supports such functionality, but carriers sometimes remove it.

The funny thing is — a Windows Mobile phone from LG that supports WiMAX was seen at last year’s Consumer Electronics Show. That particular model supported seamless transition between GSM and WiMAX networks, but LG stated that there’s no reason CDMA couldn’t be substituted for GSM. This actually lends even more credence to Eric’s thoughts — WiMAX is available in many more markets this year, so the timing is far better for such a device in 2010 than it was in 2009. The lack of coverage for WiMAX this year earned it a negative spot on our GigaOM Pro Mobile Winners and Losers (subscription required) but perhaps that changes next year. While a WiMAX phone might offer cutting-edge wireless technology, it’s sure to only run an older-feeling Windows Mobile 6.5 — the next release of Microsoft’s mobile platform, version 7, isn’t due out until the second half of 2010, which could spell trouble.

I bought this drive in hopes of having an inexpensive replacement for the dead internal SuperDrive inside my Mac. I had read a favorable review elsewhere indicating that someone else had bought it for this purpose and it was working fine. Interestingly, it seems to function great while in OSX, but I am having significant trouble booting from it. Installing OSX is the primary reason why I need a DVD drive at all, and so this is a bit disappointing.

In LG’s defense, the drive does not advertise Mac compatibility. I assumed this meant that there was no Mac compatible software, but it seems that it also means more.

I guess this one will be a return.

New data on the top 10 mobile phones puts Apple on top due to the sheer number of iPhone owners. But

New data on the top 10 mobile phones puts Apple on top due to the sheer number of iPhone owners. But both Research In Motion and LG actually control more market share because they sell multiple, popular models.

Nielsen’s data on the top 10 phones in use in the U.S. from January through October shows Apple with 4 percent market share, RIM with 6.3 percent, and LG with 6.4 percent. But the trio lead a very fragmented market. In fact, the top 10 phones account for just over 20 percent of the total devices in use.

With an estimated 271 million U.S. mobile subscribers at the end of 2008, accounting for about 88 percent of the U.S. population, even 1 percent market share is significant.

RIM BlackBerry devices and LG handsets–voluminous in offering compared with the singular iPhone also have the benefit of longer time on the market and of promotion by the carriers that don’t have the iPhone. LG is the No. 3 handset maker behind Nokia and Samsung. RIM and Apple have nowhere the number of models offered by the top three handset makers, yet they enjoy a stronger market share.

The Nielsen data shows both the opportunity and the challenge of creating the next big thing in mobile devices. Just a few years ago, Motorola’s Razr was the belle of the ball, and RIM was firmly fixed as an enterprise device. However, the convergence of voice, e-mail, and browsing, as well as new 3G networks, brought the smartphone to the forefront and helped push both RIM and Apple to the top.

All hope is not lost for currently less popular handset makers, as the market can very quickly change dramatically.

Indeed, there is a big challenge under way from Android-based phones such as the Droid that could thrust laggards such as Motorola back into the spotlight, provided that Google doesn’t stomp all over the developer community that has been building up around the new mobile operating system.

And mobile phones are not just for those on the run. Nielsen’s Convergence Audit (PDF), an annual survey on voice, video, and data products, “shows a rise in households who have ‘cut the cord’ by trading their traditional landlines for wireless cellular services and an increase in mobile media device usage among a diverse set of households.”

In the second quarter, the report said, 21 percent of households were using wireless cellular service only–compared with 18 percent a year earlier. “This increase comes from…households who have dropped their landlines as well as from young adults that started new households with just a wireless phone service,” the report said.

Odds are that these percentages will continue to climb as young mobile users reach adulthood and as adults look to their mobile devices to do more than just make calls.

Saturday morning, I awoke to discover that I had shattered the touch screen on my LG Voyager.

RATS!

(Okay, I admit that’s not what I said when I discovered it, but for blogging purposes, RATS it is!)

Fortunately, I was available for an upgrade so Verizon is sending me a brand spankin’ new Blackberry for free. However, as I broke it on a weekend, they couldn’t get the phone to me until today…and of course nobody was home when FedEx tried to deliver it, so now I will have been without a fully functioning phone for four plus days.

This has taught me three important lessons:

1) Being without a phone can be quite liberating, as you are no longer beholden to speak with anyone you do not wish. “Sorry, my phone is broken” is the best excuse EVER.

2) Conversely, I never realized how much I have come to depend on being able to contact my loved ones immediately. Despite newfangled inventions like Facebook and email, it has taken less than a week for me to feel isolated and out of the loop.

3) People love their Crackberries. The adulation began gushing forth the moment I mentioned I was thinking of getting one. I’m already hooked…and I haven’t even gotten mine yet! It’s like Christmas…before it’s even Christmas!

The washer and dryer have finally been installed. Angie’s been putting them through their pace

The washer and dryer have finally been installed. Angie’s been putting them through their paces in the last couple days. I can’t describe how much of a nightmare it was to get the ducts and plumbing in with a few inches of clearance. Anyway after 12 hours of cursing and about 1000 square yards of duct tape, they’re all ready to roll.

We went with a LG stackable washer and dryer for two reasons. One they were stackable, which given the inches of clearance was very important. Two, LG units are highly rated by JD Power: although Samsung’s washer and dryer are the top rated appliances, LG came in second in overall satisfaction, and the LG units were quite a bit cheaper than Samsung’s. So far we’re happy with both the washer and dryer, especially the high efficiency washer which is miserly with water use.

By the way is it weird that the dryer door opens right and the washer door opens left? I’m not sure that I care, just wondering.

Pioneer’s recent exit from the Plasma business has left only a handful of Companies fighting for the number one spot. Pioneer had just launched its premier “Project Kuro” line which promised total black levels and was designed to give consumers a no-holds-barred choice for high-end plasma displays and with the help of the custom installation market captured the high-end of the market. The problem is that Pioneer, while predicting several hundreds of thousands of plasma TV sales, was up against rivals Samsung who own the majority of the market and Panasonic who have planned to increase sales volume.

Choices today are limited. We have seen the exit of many major brands over the years including the pioneer of bringing Plasma to the domestic market, Fujitsu. Once regarded as the Premium Plasma to own and certainly reigned supreme at the high end.

So with a handful of reputable Companies to pick from we have, Panasonic, Samsung and LG in that order. Samsung is regarded as “Good Value” but Panasonic is only a generation behind where Pioneer were, just a few more hundred dollars more than Samsung. Panasonic also has a range of Commercial/Professional models without built in tuners and are almost comparable to the Pioneer range. Then LG, “Lucky Goldstar”, sorry clever marketing has seen the adoption of “Lifes Good”

Currently Panasonic hold the number one spot by default, closely followed by Samsung with the highest cut of the market and slipping into third place…LG

So I went to Oz yesterday. It was pretty awesome. For those of you who don’t know Oz is the name of LG’s 3G phone network so most of their phone shops are labeled Oz.

The guy at the store was super helpful, even if he didn’t speak much English and my Korean is coming along slowly. I looked at a few unmarked phones and asked the ever useful Korean phrase Eolmayeyo how much? And he looked up the prices.

I found a pretty nice Samsung phone, pretty basic model with a camera and Mp3 player…though it needs a micro-SD card. They also through in a nice hard plastic carrying case which turned out to be a plus as i accidentally dropped it in the cross walk today on the way to dinner.

There was a fair amount of pointing to numbers and them writing things out for me on a calculator, then they even were nice enough to call up their friend who spoke english with a bit of a south African accent and she made sure I understood everything i had agreed to ( i did actually either explicitly or implicitly in the case of if i go over my minutes I pay more than the base rate)

As an aside my green card says LG on it because one of my bosses offices is in an LG building. So the guys at the LG store thought I worked for LG and were incredulous at me buying a Samsung phone. I’m sure somewhere in America there is a corporate rivalry like this. But I’ve never experienced anything like that.

They asked me twice and then called someone who was fluent in English and while she was asking me other things about the price she asked me if I was sure I wanted to buy a Samsung.

All in all I think i ended up with a pretty nice model. I’ve got a few of my friends numbers in the phone. What really strikes me is how much easier the cell phone makes life. Last night I went to see Avatar with several people from all over Seoul. We only had two forms of communication, the cell phone and facebook messages. And it all went off without a hitch.

As I was watching National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation tonight, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw a commercial for an awesome looking phone called the LG eXpo.

Now normally I wouldn’t be all excited about the release of a phone (unless it was the iPhone for Verizon) BUT I saw an interesting feature on the LG eXpo that caught my eye.

Yes…thats right…that is a projector on the back of that phone.

The phone itself runs Windows 6.5 and has the S-Class interface overlayed on to it. The projector itself is basically an accessory that clips onto the back of the phone. Some of the other features are a 5 megapixel camera, microSD card slot for increasing storage as well as the usual Wi-Fi connectivity.

This would be a great idea when you have a fun video to show a group of friends or when you have some free time and no TV or computer…..think again.

The LG eXpo is only available for Business Customers.

Why AT&T and LG chose to make it exclusively for business customers I will never know, but I do know it is a dumb decision….although personally….I would probably never use the projector.

Here is a video showing a quick review and demonstration of the projector:

What do you think about it?
