The fact that my junior year is going to end in less than a week is just hitting me now. And it’s not just hitting me. It’s full-on slapping me in the face.

I’m not going to go into a nostalgic post looking back at how far I’ve come in the past three years (pretty far out of the closet, at least), how much things have changed (I entered with one major and minor and am going to leave with a completely different one), and how much I’ve grown (out, but not up). I’ll save that for senior year. But I will say that this year was a good one, for the following reasons:

My writing took off: It all began with my creative non-fiction writing class: I wrote between 10 and 15 pages per week, and learned lessons about writing that I am sure to take with me wherever my writing journey takes me. I started this blog, and I would say it’s successful: it was found by the Newhouse professor here that runs TheNewsHouse.com and I was invited to write for them. I had four articles published in the LGBT magazine The OutCrowd, one of them being one of my creative nonfiction pieces (check it out here). I got an internship at SU’s publishing house in the Editing & Production department, and a job as a content writer at a web development organization. Finally, two of my creative nonfiction pieces were chosen to be presented at a reading and a conference. It’s only going to continue going up from here.

Twenty-first birthdays: At the beginning of the month, I turned twenty-one, and three weeks later, so did my roommates Chelsea and Isaac. Although I’m not much of a drinker, it still resulted in several fun nights that made April one to remember.

Went out to eat (more than I should have): Bleu Monkey sushi. The Melting Pot fondue. P.F. Chang’s Chinese bistro. Panera, La Cantina, Jimmy John’s. You can tell it’s my junior year when I’m getting sick of the dining hall food and hit up the local restaurants – a lot. Places I still have to go: Pastabilities, Stella’s Diner, and Empire Brewery Co.

Mayfest & Block Party: Nothing will come close to the Kid Cudi concert my freshman year. But this year, Ke$ha came pretty close, regardless of her drunken on-stage presence. She was pretty entertaining, when the glitter cleared the air. Mayfest was good, too: after two years of cold and rainy Mayfests, the weather was finally warm enough to not wear a sweatshirt and a rain jacket. The perfect ending to a great junior year.

I’m ready for break, when I go home for a month and return back for a summer in Syracuse - gulp. I’ll keep you updated on how that goes.

Always,

We are looking for LGBT+ photographers for our new magazine. If you would like to get involved, we are compiling a list of contributors, email us at: equal.contact@gmail.com, and we will add you to our list of contributors. Each month we will then email out a list of ideas for topics, events that need covering, articles that require a photograph, and our contributors can choose which one they would like to cover.

We are also looking for people with photography projects that they would like to gain publicity for. If you have a series of photographs, an exhibition, or just a single photograph that you would like to gain publicity for, and earn a bit of money from, send us an email! Or, if you have a project that you are considering doing, send us a message and we will consider publishing it in an edition of our magazine.

(Projects can be anything, so long as they are showing the creative talent of LGBT+ people. However if they are to do with LGBT+ issues, Pride movements, LGBT+ rights, or equal rights – we are even more interested!)

So if you are an amateur LGBT+ photographer, who would like to get some of their photographs published, or maybe you just came back from a LGBT+ event, and have some interesting photos from it. Get in touch!

(All submissions that are published are paid. We do not support people working for free.)

Over the next few days, this space will be used to give more detail on what we are doing, and what we are looking for, from our contributors. So lets start with artists/designers.

What we want to achieve with this section of the magazine, is to give young artists/designers a space where they can gain publicity and show off there work. There is no restrictions to what we will put in the magazine, so here are a few examples of things we are interested in:

(with each of these examples, if it is related to gender/sexuality/LGBT+ issues, that is a big plus, however it is not a requirement. The only requirement is it must be done by members of the LGBT+ community)

Digital Designs/graphics work,

Pieces of art

Details of exhibitions/events

Details of performances

Drawings, paintings, illustrations.

Comics (if we could find a re-occurring comic to feature each week, this would be highly valued).

sculpture

Any thing you can think of!

So let us know if you have any ideas, or any work you would like to show, or if you would like to be one of our regular contributors. We would love to hear from you!

Contact at: Equal.contact@gmail.com

thank you
