Het mooie, de parels van het leven zijn relaties.

Het moeilijke van het leven is het missen van mensen om je heen die je zo lief zijn.

Vandaag is het een jaar geleden dat Jonathan overleed, onze goede mattie van de jongerenwerkersopleiding, wat was hij een mooi mens! Mijn gedachten en gebeden zijn bij zijn vrouw.

Crisis Communication: On a more personal note

I’d like to preface this blog post with this: I realize that if this blog were my child, it would have been taken away for neglect. I’ll be writing a blog about what’s been taking up all my time tomorrow but until then, fellow FPRA-er Lauren Novo has been kind enough to write the following blog post. PR professionals are taught to hope for the best but to prepare for the worst; to always have a plan of action ready in the event of a disaster. It’s called a crisis communication plan, and every pro should have one.

Last week, on an FRPA (Florida Public Relations Association) student trip, I found myself in an undesirable situation and couldn’t help but wish I had a crisis communication plan of my own. The three day trip promised to be an informative and insightful look at some top industry leaders of the Orlando area; we were to visit a local PR firm, the Florida Hospital, Darden Restaurants, Orlando Magic and Universal Studios. Needless to say, I was stoked.

Never did I anticipate being sick for most of it. The runny nose and sore throat were at the forefront of my immune system failure. By the time I was headed to Orlando, my body was full of various over-the-counter medicines, none of which had any effect. On day one of meetings, my eyes were still completely red.

I don’t consider myself a vain person, but I don’t leave home in glasses. Ever. They are neither trendy nor the correct prescription, so wearing them on what was supposed to be a professional outing was downright horrifying. My lackluster look was the least of my concerns, however. My eyes, sporting a new “bloodshot” appearance, twitched at bright lights and became teary at virtually everything.

At a typical professional event, I enjoy asking the speaker relevant questions, introducing myself and at the very least, making eye contact during the presentation. That simply wasn’t going to happen in Orlando. In my one attempt to ask a question, the speaker gave a thoughtful, in-depth response and thought I was crying by the end of it. Humiliating? Yes.

My experience was no fortune 500 crisis, but it affected me negatively nonetheless. I didn’t want to leave an impression as a bloody-eyed, disease-ridden individual who couldn’t contain her sniffles. In the end, it just seemed best to learn as much as possible and stay under the radar.

But what would you have done? Do you have a personal crisis communication plan of your own when things don’t go as planned? What if this had happened during a crucial interview? Or during a presentation that you were giving? Sometimes, I think we just have to do the best with the hand we’ve been dealt. But maybe there’s a secret, and if so, I’d love you to share.

Saturday morning coffee

I woke up extra early to try and finish up a project that I have been working on for a couple of days. It is a lovely zipper pouch that has a lot of ruffles and detail is completely hand-stitched and takes a lot of hand-eye coordination to get the stitching just right, I will post pics when I am at a better stopping point. Instead I find myself blogging and twittering while sipping my piping hot coffee extra light and sweet.

I wanted to share my lovely pearl beaded mugs from Pottery Barn that my husband and I got on sale -(yes, a major sale – like 50% off) at the Tanger outlets in Riverhead, NY. That was back in the day when we used to live with our parents on L.I. and we would escape out “to the country” ie. Riverhead, Mattituck, Aquebogue and go look at the horses, go wine tasting at Pindar Vineyards and eat lunch at Erik’s in Southhold. They have the best vegetable panini using veggies from local farms, oh and the seasoned fries are amazing too.

Oh yes, we also always made a stop to Love Lane in Mattituck where we always made sure to by some chocolate from the Love Lane Sweet Shoppe in the tiny town.

My husband and I share a lot of memories from Love Lane when we were first dating, heck we pretty much could have lived out there because we traveled the hour drive every weekend. Ahh I love the North Fork. We will be traveling back to LI for the holidays and plan to shop our hearts out on Black Friday, especially to buy a huge case of Sweet Scarlet from Pindar.. . so sweet, so indulgent.

Jackie Chan, the great living legend, is probably my number one inspiration in this world.
When it comes to his accomplishments in life, his talents, fame and fortune; there are few to surpass him.
He spreads happiness and inspiration wherever he goes, truly great.
Sometimes I wonder, if I can ever do even half of the things he has done during his long life; atleast I am fighting to
Jackie is surely a man who will go down in history as one of the biggest icons of the 20th and 21 century, being only in his mid 50’s; but with the amazing stamina and will of a 20 year old, he has a lot left to do

I am really proud that I was born in ‘The Time of Jackie Chan‘ and one of my goals is to meet him, someday…

Though to a more serious topic regarding Jackie.
Last year, in February of 2008 hsi father Charles Chan passed away, and the images of Jackie at his funeral brings tears to my eyes and pain to my heart, to see such a happy man so sad
Jackie’s father ment a whole lot to him, and looking at footage of the two really shows how happy Jackie is and how he loves his father.

I know the day my parents die, I will be equally sad.
One must only realize that the natural way of the world is that change is the greates truth of them all, as time and space is in constant motion; all life ends, so a new can begin.
To bare the emotion of grief and loss is another thing, we must just learn to accept.
Just like Buddha teaches.

I would also like to honour the great Jet Li, another icon of the modern world.
Not only is his martial arts and film work utmost impressive, but his engagement in philanthropy mainly through his ‘The One Foundation‘ is amazing!
An active Buddhist like myself, through his website he answers some very good questions thru his point of view based on Buddhist teaching but also through his own experience and opinion ( though not very updated anymore there are loads of great material there)

Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson (born 18 March 1986), better known by her stage name Lykke Li (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈlʏkə li]), is a Swedishindie singer. She released her debut album, Youth Novels, in 2008.

Li was born in Huddinge, Stockholm in 1986 and was raised by artistic parents; her mother was a painter, her father is a musician.^[1] The family moved to Stockholm when Li was a toddler and later moved to a mountaintop in Portugal when Li was six, where they lived for five years; the family also spent time in Lisbon and Morocco and spent winters in Nepal and India.^[1]^[2] She moved to the neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklynin New York for three months when she was 19.^[3]^[4]^[5] She returned when she was 21 to record her album.^[6] When not touring, she resides in the Södermalm district of Stockholm.

According to her Myspace Blog, she has started writing material for her second album but insists it will be a long wait until it is finished for fans to hear.^[8]

Lykke has become increasingly popular with indie music fans and took her particular flavor of music more mainstream with an appearance on Last Call with Carson Daly on February 18, 2009. She has received a great deal of notoriety for her cover of “Knocked Up”, originally recorded by Kings of Leon who had approached Lykke to cover a song of her choice, and “Gifted” in which she performs with Kanye West. Going further mainstream, Lykke performed at the 2009 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 19. Lykke has recently wrapped up her herYouth Novels tour.

The song “I’m good, I’m gone” was featured in the film Sorority Row.

The song “Possibility” was written for the forthcoming New Moon (2009 film) after Lykke had been asked to contribute, she wasn’t sure she wanted to write a song. It was after she had seen an early screening of the movie, she decided she wanted to contribute to the soundtrack. The soundtrack was released on 16th October 2009.

Ik ben niet vaak wat kwijt, maar als ik dan iets kwijt ben, dan ben ik het vaak ook echt goed kwijt. Zo ben ik sinds een paar weken mijn oortjes met microfoontje kwijt, waardoor ik niet kan skypen. Grhmpffff.

En sinds een paar dagen ben ik mijn slofsok kwijt. Jep, mijn linker slofsok wel te verstaan. Ik weet niet wat een slofsok is, maar de sok die ik bedoel past wel bij die naam. Het is een groene sok met balletjes erop van een andere kleur groen, met anti slipmatje er onder, extra dik, te gebruiken als slof (héééé, ik zie de connectie), de slofsok die ik gekocht heb tijdens mijn uitje met blogger Sonja in Leiden, een paar weken geleden, bij de HEMA.
Wel, nu weet je alles van mijn slofsok, alleen nog niet waar hij is. Maar goed, dat weet ik ook niet.

De betekenis:

Het betekent eigenlijk dat je geen tijd hebt om goed te doen, dat je met alles afrekent wat je tegen komt in negatieve zin. Geen tijd om je hart te laten spreken, maar hard ga voor wat van jou is. Het is geen goede zaak, hier gaat het om je eigen hachie!! Je hebt dan geen vrienden.

Het is moeilijk om de lading die hier achter zit duidelijk te maken, maar het komt een beetje op neer dat ieder voor zich gaat, geen hart, oog of oor voor een ander.

Fietste ik vanavond met iemand die toevallig bij de recherche zit naar huis, hij zonder licht, ik met licht, wordt hij aangehouden door 2 Polizisten. Hij noemt ff dat ie rechercheur is, laat z’n kaartje zien, wordt ie gewoon gematst en mag die verder fietsen naar huis. Matselaar.

Een geweldige Antilliaanse spreuk geleerd van de Antiliaanse meiden in ons jongerencentrum:

wat niets minder betekent dan: tijdens de oorlog is er geen kerk! Het is maar net dat je het ff weet. Verder heb ik geen flauw idee wanneer je het kunt gebruiken. Dat konden ze me niet helemaalduidelijk maken, maar je weet het: tijdens de oorlog is er geen kerk! Het heeft wel iets met luiers verschonen te maken. Misschien.

Dire que je suis une grande sportive, serait exagéré. Non, ce qui me plait dans le sport ou dans la vie, c’est la nouveauté et l’adrénaline. La sensation étrange que l’on peut ressentir entre l’excitation et la peur suivie d’un grand soulagement et une certaine fierté lorsque la difficulté est passée.

Cette année je me suis lancée dans 2 nouvelles activités: le roller et l’équitation. Toutes deux pouvant être risquées si les patins ou le bourin font un écart. Et je l’ai eu ma dose d’adrénaline, ma petite drogue naturelle. J’ai effectué avec brio quelques cascades spectaculaires dont je suis ressortie miraculeusement entière! Pour complètement vous rassurer sur l’état de la marchandise, voici quelques clichés en tenue presque complète de mes 2 nouvelles passions.

Ben beetje moe. Gister half 10 op m’n nest, gewoon onder het voetbal van het NL elfatl naar bed gegaan. Nou dan ben ik echt moe. Overigens weer verloren gisteren, met 4-1 van de nr. 1. Maar goed, die had ik wel een beetje ingecalculeerd. Ze waren niet eens zo heel ernstig goed, maar ze straften onze individuele fouten goed af. Komende zaterdag tegen Nootdorp, dan maar weer eens punten pakken.

Gister BHV training gehad: brandje blussen, stabiele zijligging, reanimatie, ontruiming, etc. Was wel tof. Daarbij ook een bizarre film gezien van een brand in een Engels stadion waarbij 54 doden vielen. Bizar in de zin van dat het zo snel gaat, binnen een minuut staat een hele tribune in de fik en hangt er een giga rookwolk en sterven er mensen, en ook bizar in de zin van hoe mensen er op reageren, de ernst van de situatie niet inschatten en nog steeds als hooligans te keer terwijl er echt een ramp aan de gang is.

Setting up Twitter within my Linkedin was easy to do.

After logging into your Linkedin account, go to the add applications portion of your home page and find the Tweets application.

About the Tweets application:

With Tweets, you can now display your most recent tweets on your LinkedIn profile. Tweets also gives you instant access to the updates of people you are following on Twitter and the power to tweet, reply, and re-tweet — all from your LinkedIn home page.

1987.
My grandmother is moving around in the kitchen.
The carafe looking coffee maker is placed above a blue flame of fire.
She continues to bustle around the cramped kitchen.
The slight whistle coming from the stove signals a temporary moratorium of movement.
She pours herself a cup of coffee and mixes in some milk and an abundant spoonful of sugar.
She finally sits down.
She takes a sip with eyes closed as I breathe in the sweet aroma.
She finally opens her eyes and asks me “¿Quieres un poquito?”
I’m 7 years old I’m bonding with my grandmother over a cup of café con leche.

To some, coffee is a morning cup of energy. A liquid boost that’s needed to face the day. But to me, it’s probably the only food that’s synonymous with home.
When I was growing up in my parent’s home, my father and I were the only ones that drank coffee.
During my college days, Papi would meet me in Miami and take me to my favorite Cuban restaurant. We would never leave until he had his cortadito and I had my super sweet café con leche.
Just recently, I had a very serious and heavy conversation with Papi. I arrived at my parent’s house with my nerves, stomach, head, and emotions all in a mess. After the initial spilling of my guts, my Dad asked me if I had eaten. Being that I was such a wreck, I had not eaten since lunch the day before. Papi immediately went to the coffee maker and started brewing the Bustelo. For those 5 minutes it took us to drink our cups of coffee, all the drama was gone and it was just a Father feeding his Daughter.

A little while ago, I went to my home away from home. I couldn’t leave without seeing my favorite aunt. After kisses and hugs, the first thing I asked her for was coffee. Being that my aunt is a bona fide caffeine addict (love you, Iz!), she happily (and quickly) obliged. We then spent the next 2 hours drinking coffee in her kitchen. As we held our warm cups in our hands, we talked, laughed, and just enjoyed the moment of being together with no rush to get on with the day.

I’m not saying that only Latinos drink coffee, but there is something about the Latino culture and coffee. A Latino household will most likely brew coffee every day and for nearly every occasion. Baptisms, parties, after funerals, whenever. Perhaps it’s because we know that while a cup in the morning by yourself will do, there’s nothing like sharing those few moments with the ones you love.
(Who doesn’t love going to Starbucks with friends?)

I have continued the tradition of coffee in my home.
I hope that one day my kids will join me at our table with their cups.
We’ll talk about life, love, and everything in between. And, when it’s necessary, I’ll console them over a cup just like my Dad did a couple weeks ago.

Until then, I continue to brew and share with those I love…as long as it’s light and sweet.

Ik geloof dat ik een beetje humor mis op mijn blog. Dat is dan één van de weinige nadelen van het niet meer op school werken, want ik denk dat de meeste humorblogs daar ontstonden. Wie kent niet het verhaal van die keer dat ik zo nodig naar de plee moest tijdens het lesgeven, en ik uiteindelijk rennend door de klas de deur te laat opende en de deur uit zijn voegen beukte. Of die keer dat ik ongemerkt ontbijtkoek met schimmel at. Of een verstopte leerling achter de kast water gaf. Of de leerling die zeker een half uur onder mij bureau zat zonder dat ik het merkte. De spiekbriefjes die ik afpakte en het glorieuze smile daarbij. Dansen met een leerling voor de klas. Een leerling wijs maken dat ik bij het circus heb gezeten. Goede oude tijd…

Daar tegenover staan collega’s G en R die verstoppertje of tikkertje doen in The Mall. Keiharde karaoke doen met een chilisausfles in je hand (filmpje komt nog steeds, nog ff geduld). Mall collega’s die game-nerd zijn in de pauzes. Verder kom ik niet echt. Ben dus blijkbaar echt een beetje afgezakt op de humorschaal.

Mijn werk nu is wat meer serieus, maar… wel uitdagender en bevredigender. Ik kan me ergens in vast bijten, dat miste ik op school enorm, misschien had ik daarom zoveel tijd voor grappigheden. Of zijn jongeren gewoon grappig en ouderen en beleid maken en uitvoeren wat minder?

Laat mij ff lachen, vertel me wat jouw grappigste moment was deze week! Kan gewoon bij reacties

Het leukste woord dat ik vandaag gehoord heb, is: troeteltruus. J refereerde aan mij als zijnde een soort mascotte: troeteltruus dus. Vind ‘m wel leuk verzonnen.

Op plaats 2 eindigt zeker brainstillen, de tegenhanger van brainstormen. Komen er niet veel meer ideeën uit rust, dan uit storm voort? Trek je even terug, word rustig, laat alles bezinken en de ideeën als vanzelf opkomen.

Vandaag heb ik me verder bezig gehouden met alles wat tussen predikanten en het missionaire vraagstuk en tosti’s en karaoke zingen in zit. Erg gevarieerd dus. De tosti’s waren erg lekker. De karaoke erg grappig (komt als het goed is nog op deze blog te staan). De predikanten met het missionaire vraagstuk erg boeiend.

I usually try to be very conservative about adding in new races to my races of man post, but sometimes I just feel like I’m forced to. Based on this article, and in particular, the figure above, forced me to make some new splits.

The question was what to do about the Taiwanese people. Not the Taiwan aborigines – but the Hakka and Min Nan people of SE China who settled in Taiwan in the past 400 years. It turns out that they appear to be a discrete race, and that they are linked to Singapore Chinese and the Thai Chinese. In Singapore and Thailand, Chinese form a market-dominant minority position.

They are a minority of the population, but they tend to run businesses and be very wealthy. Similar cases are seen in Indonesia and the Philippines, where tiny Chinese minorities of 2-3% control up to 70% of the wealth in the nation.

So the interesting question arises – who exactly are the Chinese minorities of Thailand and Singapore? By genetic studies, we can now see that they are SE Chinese people related to the Min Nan and the Hakka.

The Min Nan and Hakka both speak languages that are called Chinese dialects, but in reality, they are completely separate languages. Both languages are doing fine – Min Nan (Southern Min) with 49 million speakers and Hakka with 34 million speakers.

Min Nan and Hakka both strangely lack official status anywhere, although Southern Min is widely spoken in Taiwan. It’s odd that some of the world’s most widely spoken languages lack official status – Min Nan is the 24th largest language, and Hakka is the 35th largest language, in terms of numbers of speakers.

Both languages are vigorous and are in good shape. Southern Min has a roman script that is fairly widely used. Hakka also has a roman script, but I am not sure how widely it is used.

Southern Min is actually a number of separate languages: Min Nan proper, Amoy, Teochew and Hainanese , at the very least.

Click to enlarge. Here is a map of the various Chinese languages. These are not Chinese dialects, but actual separate languages. Some may be dialects of other Chinese languages though. The main languages are Mandarin, Wu, Cantonese, Min, Xiang, Hakka and Gan. Ping, Hui and Jin are classed above as dialects of those larger languages.Jin is classed as a dialect of Mandarin, but it is actually a separate language with 45 million speakers, making it around the 25th largest language in the world.Min is said 5 separate languages, but it is actually many separate languages. The 5 separate recognized languages are Min Nan, Min Dong, Min Zhong, Min Bei and Puxian. Min Nan itself is a number of separate languages. Huizhou, or Hui, is a separate language that is actually a set of related languages. Wu is more than one language.

Ping is traditionally considered to be part of Cantonese, but it is a separate language. Mandarin is also a set of related languages instead of one language. Cantonese is also be more than one language. Hakka is also be more than one language.

It is nonsense to say someone speaks “Chinese”. There is no such thing as a language called “Chinese”.

Instead, there are various languages in the Chinese language family – at least 14 separate languages, and actually many more. Mandarin is by far the largest of these languages, and most of the smaller languages are suffering under the influence of Mandarin. In addition, the Chinese government favors Mandarin and does not support the other languages much, if at all.

I also split off a group called the Li and another group called the Oroqen based on the chart above.

The Li are a transitional group between the Northern Chinese and the Southern Chinese, though they live on Hainan Island in the far south of China. They speak a Tai-Kadai language called Hlai which has 667,000 speakers. Use is vigorous; the language is doing well, but it is generally not written, although a Roman script exists. Mandarin is used for writing.

The Oroqen are nomadic people who live in far northeastern China and speak a Tungusic tongue. As you can see from the chart, they are closer to the Japanese than to the NE Chinese. There are only 1,200 speakers left out of a small 7,000 population, but there are 800 monolinguals, and use is vigorous by those who speak the language.

They live by hunting and used to practice shamanism. They still lack an official script for their language, but there are radio programs in Oroqen.

The truth is that both the Oroqen people and their language are in poor shape, and most of the blame can be placed on the Communist Chinese regime, even though the regime has also done many good things for the Oroqen. The Cultural Revolution in particular was a period of insanity, stupidity and terror.

An Oroqen Race was added to the NE Asian Major Race due to the extreme divergence of these people. I also added Inner Mongolians to the Mongolian Race inside of NE Asian.

I added the Buyei to the Tai Race within the SE Asian Major Race and created a new race called SE Chinese Race, consisting of Min Nan, Hakka, Singapore Chinese and Thai Chinese. The Buyei live in southern China and northern Vietnam and speak a Tai language that has over 2 million speakers yet has no official status. Buyei language use is vigorous, and it is in good shape.

There is a romanized script, and there are newspapers in the language, but they mostly use Mandarin for writing. The Buyei language is probably made up of a few separate languages, because some of the dialects are not mutually intelligible. The language is very close to the Zhuang language.

The SE Chinese Race really consists of the descendants of the ancient Chinese people known as the Yueh. The Yueh, or Yue, formed a state in southeastern coastal China during the Warring States Period and the Spring and Autumn Period. The state lasted from about 525 BC to 334 BC. The Chinese were already involved in metallurgy and were producing excellent swords during these periods.

We drove by their old church, and saw a FOR SALE sign nailed to the door. This past weekend Henry and I attended mass in Most Holy Trinity Church in Easthampton, Long Island, where we go in summer and on weekends. In his homily, the pastor noted that he was happy to see the church so packed and ended by saying, in effect, We are in dire financial straits and our future is bleak. The church has enormous debt and is on the verge of disaster. If you want to continue to come here to worship on Sunday, you’ll have to double your offering so that we can pay our debts and remain open.
