This month, Rohrbach Library is dedicating its Voices and Choices Center to a celebration of Black History Month. From now until the end of February, there will be a different event each week to commemorate this month.

On Thursday, February 11, from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. come listen to Frank Gilyard speak about the history of the Underground Railroad in Berks County. Gilyard is a local historian and president of the Central Pennsylvania African American Museum (CPAAM). CPAAM is located in the Old Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church on North 10th Street in Reading. Gilyard will talk about the museum, about the Underground Railroad, and about the 177 years of African American history in Berks that he’s been studying.

The following week, on Thursday, February 18 from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., local artist Ed Terrell will speak about African Art. This will be followed by a reception and question and answer session from 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. Terrell is a painter who was born in Philadelphia but grew up in Reading. He currently works in the ACOR Gallery in Reading’s Goggleworks.

The last Thursday of the month, February 25, brings two special events. First, from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m, listen to Dr. Ellesia Blaque, KU English professor, speak about African American writer Maria Stewart’s role in abolition in and feminism. Dr. Blaque’s area of expertise is in Africana and ethnic literatures. In addition to teaching, she runs her own website (http://www.ellesiablaque.com/) and her own publishing company, banned Books & Company, in Sinking Spring.

In addition to Dr. Blaque’s presentation, join us for a viewing of the short film “Out of Obscurity.” This film details an anti-discrimination sit in in Alexandria, Va., in 1939. The event took place when a small group of African American men went to a public library and asked for library cards. When they were denied based on their race, the men sat down at a table and began to read. These men were soon arrested. A discussion will follow the movie. There is no time or location set to view this movie yet, so listen for updates.

With the exception of the movie, all of these events take place in the library’s Voices and Choices Center; this is on the second floor. We hope you can join us as we celebrate Black History Month and honor an important part of our nation’s history.

Ok- I know I could go on and on and on about our new website.

So, I will.

One of the coolest features (in my humble opinion), is the “I Want To…” tab. You can do anything from viewing the catalog to requesting a book from Inter Library Loan. But my absolute favorite, favorite part of the “I Want To…” tab is when you click on “Find A Good Book.” This tab links you to several outside resources to assist in your search for your next favorite tome. When you click on the “Find A Good Book” tab, here is what you will find:

–Good Reads Good Reads – Book recommendations, reviews and blogs, genre lists, trivia and quotes, available with or without sign-up. For popular lists, click “Explore”.

–What Should I Read Next What Should I Read Next? – By entering the title and author of a book you liked this site will give you a list of suggestions of what to read next.

–What’s Next: Books In Series Database of Kent Library District What’s Next: Books in Series – This library website providing information on books in series and many other popular lists and links for readers. Find out what book comes next in your favorite series.

–LibraryThing Library Thing – A community of 900,000 book lovers that connects you to people who read what you do. Following sign-up, users may access booklists, join in discussion groups, talk with authors and blog with book lovers.

–WhichBook.net whichbook.net – A unique way to choose the right book. By choosing various options this website provides the closest matches for your personal reading preferences.

So, try it! I’m telling you, it’s quite addictive. Sometimes we find that searching for a good book is just as enjoyable as reading one!

Turns out that is not really the best definition partly because it depends more on how something is used rather than how it was created that makes it a primary source. Rather than try to explain this myself, I’ll leave it up to Yale University.

We’ve heard worries from a number of patrons lately about how fast cars zip down Mountain Boulevard outside the library. Please remember the nearby school, library and neighbors — and all the associated free-range kids — and obey the posted speed limits, don’t make u-turns over the double-yellow line, etc. And if you’re on foot make sure you look around carefully, especially when parking across the street from the library.

MSIC has identified this street as one of their pedestrian safety focus areas, and OPD is aware of the problem and has been stepping up enforcement when they can.

If you have further concerns about traffic safety near the library, please contact MSIC or the OPD’s Neighborhood Services Coordinator (NSC) for Beat 13Z, Jacqueline Long, at 238-7750/615-5912 or jlong@oaklandnet.com.
