Time for my second weekly This Weekend At The Movies, and it’s a good one, since this one officially marks the start of the summer session!

And May is set to be the month of franchises, and as you already know, there’s one big franchise coming in this Friday. That’s right, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is hitting up over 4′000 theatres in the U.S. alone this weekend, and will feature Hugh Jackman as his most iconic character, as well as many other great X-Men characters, like Sabretooth, Deadpool and Gambit.

Now, how much money will this flick make? 9 years ago, X-Men made $54.5M, in 2003 X2 made $85.5M and the last one in the franchise, X-Men: The Last Stand, made $102.8M three years ago. What I mean by this is that every new installment in the franchise has made more money than the previous one, however this new one has some things against it: Firstly, some of the most beloved characters like Cyclops and Professor X won’t be around, then, many will have had enough of the franchise by now, which is understandable, and then of course was the leak of the movie some weeks, though I doubt that’ll affect the movie much.

However this weekend is great for the comic book franchises, what with Iron Man killing it this time last year, and Spider-Man 3 doing the same thing this time in 2007, and X-Men wants it share of it, and I guess the studio thinks they will get their fair share, after all, there’s already another one of these Origins flicks about Magneto being prepared. The marketing has been strong and pretty much everyone knows that this’ll be out this weekend, so I’m guessing an $85-90M debut could result. Do I think it’ll be worth your money? Probably, yeah, it’ll be a blast, not a good blast really, since I think the plot will be overshadowed by too many effects, but a blast nevertheless, and that’s what the Summer Session is all about.

Now, just like big franchises like to open on the first weekend of May, there’s another kind of movie that likes to open against them, to smaller, but still profitable, opening grosses, and those are the wedding-centered rom-coms. We’ve seen examples of this in the recent years in Mamma Mia, Made of Honor and License to Wed, and this weekend we’ll see it with Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.

Look for this one to have the same effect that What Happens in Vegas had a year ago, a nice initial bow, and then solid word-of-mouth to carry it nicely enough for following weekends. And seeing as how Wolverine won’t really appeal to that many women, other than because of Hugh Jackman’s hotness factor, then there should be a market for women in this film, especially since it stars Matthew McConaughey, which does really well in the box office with this sort of movies. Expect a nice $20M debut. Do I think it will it be worth your money? Not really, I doubt it’s any different from any other rom-com starring McConaughey.

The other wide release this weekend is the animated action flick Battle for Terra, which although has a nice voice cast which includes my beloved Evan Rachel Wood, will probably do poorly and end up making its real business when it hits the DVD shelves. A mediocre $4M could result. Do I think it’s worth your money? Only if you’re a dad with a child not old enough yet to see Wolverine, since this movie still has some nicely crafted action, but other than that, then no.

What about last weekend’s holdovers you ask? Well, last week’s champ, Obsessed, will probably get about $15M this time around, bring the cume to about $50M which is really solid stuff.

17 Again will continue a nice enough run, and will probably make about $7M this weekend around, getting its grand total to just below the $50M mark. Fighting, last week’s number 3, will probably suffer a larger dip since Wolverine is direct competition for it, and will probably end up with just $4M or so, getting the total after two weeks to a mere $17M.

Overall the weekend will probably do just like this weekend last year, maybe more if Wolverine overperforms, which it just might. This weekend last year Iron Man debuted to an amazing $98.5M.

Films:
Fracture: 4/5- well-written but not as chilling as it’s meant to be
Willow-4/5 – given the fact that it’s essentially a children’s film with cheesy special affects, it’s still rambunctious, hilarious, and very sweet
The Lake House-3.5/5-cute and very warm and feel-good, but definitely lacking in plot
The Nanny Diaries-2.5/5 – clever satire of upper-crust Manhattan selfishness but lacking in terms of either romance or comedy
License to Wed-1/5
Knocked Up-2/5
Love Actually – 2.5/5
The Family Stone – 4/5 -quirky, sad, funny, unusual
Mean Girls-3/5 -there’s not that much going on in this film, but, y’know, it’s Lindsey Lohan at her charming but not-particularly-good best, and it’s a teen girl-flick. They’re all pretty much the same.

Books:
The Undomestic Goddess, Sophie Kinsella: 4.5/5(for chic lit)-charming, breezy, warm-hearted and wholly entertaining. Also funny and very well-written for the genre

Music:
The Devlins – 3/5-versions of Keane and Coldplay, lacking their crisp clarity and talent

An insightful article about sexism in cinema recently appeared in British newspaper, Guardian.

Excerpt:

[The] women who people today’s romantic comedies seem to have three main obsessions. There’s shopping, of course, as seen in Confessions of a Shopaholic and Sex and the City. There’s babies, as witnessed in Baby Mama, Juno and Knocked Up. And there’s marriage, which was front and centre of the noxious recent release Bride Wars, featuring Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway fighting over their dream wedding – described by Purkiss as “what some drunken bozo who never got a date in high school thinks women are like”. Marriage is also at the centre of Made of Honour, License to Wed, The Wedding Date, The Wedding Planner and 27 Dresses.

Now, at a time when 70% of women are in the workforce, career women in romantic comedies are generally either portrayed as incompetent, cruel, or both. Dr Tamar Jeffers McDonald, an academic at the University of Kent and an expert on romantic comedies, says that she finds it “quite insulting that a career woman now is something that is so frowned upon. You see depictions of women who are supposedly at the top of their game, yet they can’t walk down a corridor in a white suit without pouring coffee on themselves or walking into a bush. The films are not very subtly saying ‘yes, they may be at the top in their jobs, but actually what they really need is a man. In fact, a husband.’”

So basically what it’s saying is that in the media, women who are successful in movies and TV are portrayed as having “their shit together.” That sounds great to me; the only great downside to this is that they are negatively seen as single and lonely. Since when was that a bad thing? Anyway, this leads to the conclusion that only women who don’t have their shit together, will end up with the fairytale ending; a goal that young girls are drilled with to keep as a lifelong aspiration (which is something that is also displayed in movies). Kind of insulting, wouldn’t you say? Don’t get me wrong, I love romance/comedies. I’d just like to see a little more variety and not have women constantly being depicted as clumsy chicks who can’t have their shit together from beginning to end, not constantly talk about boys, and be respected by men without being labeled “dykes, bitches, and hoes” or anything of the like. Although, I personally think there’s nothing wrong with being a bitch today.

Dear lord this movie is horrendous. I kept waiting for anything remotely funny to happen; it didn’t. Plenty of creepy things happen though, like Robin Williams’ priest character drilling Mandy Moore about her sex life in graphic detail. Just what you need from a priest.

Ben (Jim from The Office) and Sadie (Mandy Moore from Entourage) are a young couple who need to pass their wacky family priest’s (Robin Williams, Mork from Ork) tests before they’re able to get married. The setup is there, but there are absolutely no moments worth enjoying. I was going to write that there are absolutely no moments worth laughing at, but really, no part of this movie is even slightly enjoyable, laughs or otherwise.

There is one particularly painful scene in which Jim is forced to watch over a few real kids and some fake baby robots that spit up and cry. The babies are clearly fake, yet when Jim gets overwhelmed changing diapers and in frustration slams them off walls in the changing room, an onlooker watches in horror as though the babies are real. I point this pathetic scene out because it may have been License to Wed’s most valiant attempt at a laugh, and it’s so dull and unbelievable.

License to Wed is so poorly executed in every department that the cast and crew knew it was horrible as they were making it. You’ll catch glimpses of their disappointment if you make it to the gag reel at the end of the movie.

Avoid License to Wed at all costs. If you have the opportunity to watch it for free as an in-flight movie, turn down the free headphones and drink some NyQuil instead. It is that bad.

Newly engaged, Ben Murphy (John Krasinski) and Sadie Jones (Mandy Moore) can’t wait to start their life together and live happily ever after. The problem is that Sadie’s family church, St. Augustine’s, is run by Reverend Frank (Robin Williams), who won’t bless Ben and Sadie’s union until they pass his patented, “foolproof” marriage-prep course. Happy couple Sadie Jones’s (Mandy Moore) and Ben Murphy’s (John Krasinski) perfect compatibility is tested to the limits with extraordinary (and hysterical) assignments like caring for twin baby robots that cry and poop without restraint while baby-sitting a friend’s two young children and shopping for wedding china. Driving a car blindfolded while one’s intended gives directions is no simple task either, but abstinence from sex and writing their own marriage vows may be the couple’s most difficult homework assignments. Comedy reigns throughout the entire movie thanks to Robin Williams, his choir-boy assistant Josh Flitter (Nancy Drew) and the rest of the cast and laughing out loud is definitely a course requirement for viewers, but underneath the hilarity is a serious message about making marriage work. –Tami Horiuchi

While the streets had previously cleared up from the snow days earlier this week today was a non-stop blasting of snow. Plus wind gusts that dropped the temp to single digits and there is not only more snow in the forecast for tonight along with the NW classic, freezing rain. So while my plan was to break out and use today to do all my holiday gift shopping I instead settled for another day in while the white out blizzard conditions swirled outside my windows. 

I started a new book two days ago, got about 17 pages into it and am on track to finish that off today – so I haven’t been totally slothing around. But I did find time today to catch up on blog reading online, to make a delicious dinner and to somehow get sucked into watching two totally sappy movies. 

I, like most women I know, am a fan of the romantic comedy. But even I have my limits on what movies I won’t go see or even rent. But when you are snowed in, all caught up on a LONG list of DVR’d shows and needing to feel like taking breaks from marathon book readings will keep you from getting cabin fever you let your standards slide a little.

Today I watched P.S. I Love You ; don’t ask me why. I personally don’t even like Hillary Swank. But the cute men characters with Irish accents totally sucked me in. Plus, I did take a liking to Lisa Kudrow’s character and while watching the movie there was a scene in an Irish bar (as in a bar in Ireland) and I put it on pause while I mentally racked my brain because one of the songs I knew all the words – it was Rewind; by Paolo Nutini. I believe my love of Paolo Nutini has previously mentioned during Savvy 6’s but it was one of the few high points in this movie.

After dinner I was in need of more entertainment and found License to Wed was on HBO OnDemand. I have to admit, this was a movie I previously would have rented. Robin Williams, Mandy Moore and Jim and many others from The Office – this thing had to be funny. It was cute and I did find myself laughing and taking tips from the decor of the apartment Mandy and Jim shared. But yet again in another bar scene – what is with the bar scenes? – there was another Paolo Nutini song! What are the odds? This time it was the more well known New Shoes single but still – a little odd, no?

So yeah – there are any where from 6-8″ of snow outside my home and I have been reduced to watching random romantic comedies while reading in my pajamas. I do alternate locations of my lounging so that’s something.

Okay, I wasn’t a total loser – I also ventured down to the mail boxes – located within my building, just two hallways down so no outdoor excursion required and I did two loads of laundry. I am ready for the winter storms to stop – can you tell?

Short version: While the presence of Robin Williams was agressively used to promote this movie, that’s about all he was used for. avoid at all costs, and if your cable company pipes it into your home report them for human rights abuses.

Long version: This movie is the work of Satan. seriously. You’d think, with ROBIN WILLIAMS as a priest, you’d get all manner of great satirical remarks and his usual riffing on societal norms.

but then you’d watch this movie, and be disappointed. he wisecracks a bit, but no more than a really lame priest. Mister Rogers was wackier.

But we cannot blame Robin Williams. Good, holy Robin Williams of the penis jokes and sagacious comedy that imparts one part wisdom for every two parts joy with a sprinkling of cocaine monologue. he was but an actor here, reading from a feeble script, and he does his best stuff when he is not a slave to someone else’s plot devices.

And such weak plot devices they are. Happy couple has been together a while, ready to finally tie the knot, and then it comes out that somehow, mysteriously, despite living together for a while, they have never argued. I called BULLSHIT right there. but that is the story of this movie, and this priest, this priest that Robin Williams was contractually enslaved to play, decided to goad them into finally having a big major relationship blowout before he will conduct their ceremony. and he’s a friend of the Bride’s family, conveniently enough, so they can’t just tell him to fuck off.

this is why the movie stank. It’s a romance comedy, so they have to take an unsuually-good relationship, force some conflict to make it seem more like a real interaction between two humans, then resolve it and have it made even MORE unusually-good and roll credits.

That is not a recipe for a good movie, my droogs. you could take the unwholesomely reanimated remains of George Carlin, Andy Kaufman, and Bill Hicks and have them fighting over Janine Garofalo and it would suck, because it’s a romance comedy, and not even the greatest comic minds can save a romance comedy.

Maybe it’s my fault. Maybe I’m just a cranky bitter asshole who can’t stand the sight of people pretending to be happier than they actually are for money and who would rather watch a movie where everyone winds up dead, maimed, or miserable.

but more likely, it’s just that this movie sucked rancid chupacabra balls.

Last week, I decided to put some movies in my iPod video. I love watching movies! I’d like to watch these movies especially if I get bored in the middle of the traffic:

License to Wed (Robin Williams, Mandy Moore) – This is a comedy with a touch of politics and religion movie. I’m interested to watch it because of Robin Williams. I really like him when it comes to acting.

Man of the Year (Robin Williams) – It’s Robin Williams’ movie again! He is a host who runs for Presidency and wins because of some error in the computerized voting system. I have watch the trailer of this movie before and I got interested in his comedic character.

Monster-in-Law (Jennifer Lopez, Jane Fonda) – A funny and romantic movie of a woman who finds the man of her dreams but struggles in dealing with her future mother-in-law.

Serendipity (John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale) – I have watched it many times and I’d love to watch it again and again. This is one of my favorite movies. Comedy, drama and romance in one. If you believe in fate, you’ll definitely love it.

50 First Dates (Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore) – Also my fave movie! I love watching it again, again and again. Perfect, I love it!

Bruce Almighty (Jim Carrey) – One of the best movies that really make me laugh to death. I remember when I watched this movie with my officemate, he almost cried laughing. Thumbs up for Jim Carrey! If you want to relax a bit, watch it!

Stomp the Yard (Columbus Short, Ne-Yo) – After I have watched Step Up 2, I got more interested in watching dramatical and musical movies like this. Since I can’t dance, I’d like to see the characters in this movie doing their moves and competing. =)

American Pie Beta House – I have watched the other American Pie movie series. This movie will surely be more funnier and wilder!
