“The big tradition, I think, is unity. And I have that in mind; and with that, you know, you could break all the traditions- all the other so-called rules, because they are stylistic.. and most are not true. As long as the marks are related to one another, there is unity. Unity in the work itself depends on unity of the artist’s vision.”

I am not, and never have been, a fan of George Burley. The performance by Scotland against Wales on Saturday defied description in the first half. At 3-0 down we gave away a stone wall penalty that wasn’t given and Marshall, the goalie, should have been sent off. So that would have been 4-0 with ten men. We’d no doubt have shut up shop at that point and sloped off with a four goal defeat. As it was we lost to a bunch of schoolboys by three.

He had to go. And go he has.

Our game is a mess. I mean, let’s face it, Hibs are within a win of topping the league despite a makeshift team in parts and having sold 11 internationalists in five years. How is that possible? I’lll tell you how. Because everyone else is shit. And if you want proof of that look at Rangers’ and Celtic’s positions in their European groups. Both bottom, neither with a pot washed.

Investment in Scottish football’s youth (outside of Easter Road) is lamentable and that’s why that old saying “There’s no easy games in international football” is true once again. Scotland is an easy game. Fuck sake, Falkirk went out of Europe to a team from Leichtenstien.

Lichstentsien!

In the past, had a Scottish team drawn a team from Lichstentsien we’d have needed a fucking calculator to work out the aggregate score.

So back to Burley. Cheerio and good riddance I say. We’ve had two clowns in charge both utter pish (Burley and Vogts) a sort of shit sandwich in reverse. It seems remarkable that the rose between those two thorns was dour old Walter Smith who got the team playing again, reaching unheard of heights.

He leaves? Splash, right back in the poo.
Smith is sitting in the Ibrox ejector seat so I suspect the SFA (pricks that they are) will make the predictable decision to send him a parachute. Indeed this may all be part of a “plan”.

As for Burley? He can get back to looking really, really creepy and doing dodgy stuff that no-one can write about, out of the glare of the public eye.

See ya. Wouldnae wanna be ya.man tommorow. You’ll like it.

1) os versados na ciência do amor;

2) os que têm habilidade para contar histórias;

3) os que conhecem as mulheres desde a infância;

4) os que conquistaram a confiança delas, mulheres;

5) os que lhes enviam presentes;

6) os que falam bem;

7) os que fazem coisas de que elas gostam;

8 ) os que nunca amaram outras mulheres;

9) os que conhecem seus pontos fracos;

10) os que gostam de festas;

11) os liberais;

12) os que são famosos por sua força;

13) os empreendedores e corajosos;

Liechtenstein is the fourth smallest independent European state after the Vatican City, Monaco and S

Liechtenstein is the fourth smallest independent European state after the Vatican City, Monaco and San Marino. It is predominantly Germanic but the only German speaking state that does not have a national border with Germany itself. When the Holy Roman Empire was abolished by Napoleon in 1806 all of Europe seemed to forget about this tiny insignificant Principality and the royal family were able to keep their heads down and have continued to exist as an independent state ever since and as such it is the only state in Europe with a remaining direct continuity with the thousand year old Holy Roman Empire of Charlemagne. It is one of only two countries in the world that are double landlocked, the other is Uzbekistan, as neither of its neighbours, Switzerland or Austria have access to the sea either. It is therefore safe to say that fishing is probably not an important contributor to the economy in Liechtenstein.

After an excellent breakfast and with Sally in possession of the map and entrusted with navigation duties we set off from the hotel and attempted first of all to plot a route over the mountain behind us. The roads were narrow and after a while it became clear that they just went round in big circles without ever going across the top and down the other side so we had to abandon this course and return to the main road that took us effortlessly to the town of St Gallen, which is a sort of gateway to the Alps. Here things became slightly more difficult and Sally’s navigational skills were tested to the limit as she was entrusted with the task of getting us through the town and on the road to Vaduz.

Unusually for a girl it turned out that she is a natural at map reading and she guided us through and then selected a minor road and scenic route where the scenery was wonderful with green fields that looked like watercolours in the rain and clean alpine meadows all bathed under a gentle pastel blue sky. In the fields adjacent to the roads there were honey coloured alpine cattle with full udders feeding on the lush grass and clanging noisily about on account of the huge cow-bells that they had hanging around their necks. They were friendly and inquisitive and when we stopped to admire the view they came close and posed obligingly for photographs.

We climbed the road through the town of Tregen and continued along the scenic route and through the Ruppen Pass with more impressive views and then we picked up a main road that took us south through the low-lying plains of the Appenzell region. This wasn’t quite so scenic but as we drove the Alps got closer and their high peaks began to loom overhead rising in dramatic style from the meadows and arable farmlands of this relatively flat part of Switzerland. Unfortunately the weather ahead was beginning to change and dark clouds were hanging in the mountain passes. Just before we crossed the border into Liechtenstein we came across a picturesque little town called Buchs where we stopped to admire the views of the Alps that completely surrounded this delightful little place and its attractive lake. We didn’t linger for long because by now we were excited about arriving at our destination so we moved on and resumed our gentle drive south.

We passed through the unremarkable state capitol of Vaduz with the castle of the ruling Prince, the Schloss Vaduz, perched high overhead and with magnificent views of all that he possesses stretched out below. Out of the city we began our ascent to the village of Triesenberg a thousand metres above Vaduz into the Alps. As we climbed a road with spectacular hairpin bends it unexpectedly started to rain, gently at first but about half way to the village it really started to fall quite steadily which made driving more difficult than it might have been and we were glad when we arrived at the top. We found a bar with an outside terrace overlooking the Rhine valley below and across into Switzerland and although it was still raining the terrace was sheltered and we took an outside table and enjoyed a drink and the magnificent view. Although the rain was disappointing and the bar staff and the regulars thought we were slightly daft to be sitting outside we wouldn’t have missed this view for the world and it was so good that after the first drink we had a second and stayed a while longer.

First of all before setting back to Rorschach we drove to the very top of the mountain above the town to the winter sports resort of Malbun. The road was quiet and we made a leisurely ascent through small villages with an abundance of unoccupied winter ski chalets and as the road became steeper the car began to strain in objection to the uphill task. The smell of burning clutch was enough to confirm that it wasn’t altogether enjoying the assignment of taking us to the top. When we completed the drive and stopped in Malbun we were one thousand six hundred metres above sea level and there were good views to be had all around us. The place was almost completely abandoned because by May there is no snow remaining in the valleys or on the ski slopes and only the very tops of the mountains still retained a covering. The number of days of snow cover in the Alps is steadily reducing and the snow line is retreating because recent years have seen the warmest winters on record in the Alps and climate projections predict even higher temperatures in the future. Scientists say that this is due to global warming and some warn that within twenty years skiing will not be possible below two thousand metres and already some investors are refusing to offer loans to resorts under one thousand five hundred metres as they worry about future snow cover. Most ski resorts now rely on snow cannons to create simulated snow by pumping thousands of gallons of water into the air which turn to ice crystals to provide an artificial skiing surface but unfortunately these machines use so much energy and consume so much water that they are also contributing to the environmental damage and this solution to the no-snow problem may be self defeating.

We didn’t stay long at the top and not being able to get across the mountain because the road terminates at Malbun we returned down the mountain stopping in the Hamlet of Steg where we looked at the charming little chapel of St Wendelin that stands next to the River Samina that was flowing swiftly, full as it was of the last of the melted snow from the mountain top, and babbling excitedly as it surged towards the river valley below. The views were excellent and we stopped a time or two to enjoy them, although we were reluctant to leave them behind we wanted to leave the Alps and return to the lake where to the east of us we could see that the weather looked much better.

So we drove out of Liechtenstein the way that we came, back through the unremarkable Vaduz and then across the Rhine and back into Switzerland. Vaduz was a bit disappointed but I don’t really know what I was expecting really, it just sounded as though it should be more interesting than it is, the very fact that it has been able to remain independent through two hundred turbulent years of European history should have given me a clue. If none of its more powerful neighbours had taken a fancy to it or annexed it for themselves in all of that time that probably says a lot. Although it is regarded now as a wealthy country this hasn’t always been the case because in the immediate aftermath of the Second-World-War the Prince of Liechtenstein had to sell off family heirlooms to stay solvent but in response to this sorry state of affairs the economy of Lichtenstein was completely modernised and the advantage of low corporate tax rates attracted many foreign companies to the country. These days the Prince is the world’s sixth wealthiest head of state, with an estimated wealth of three billion Euro (by comparison, the personal fortune of Queen Elizabeth II of England is estimated at seven and a half billion Euro) and the residents of the country enjoy one of the world’s highest standards of living. And that’s not bad for the world’s sixth smallest country!

We followed the road back through Buchs and across the alpine plain and back towards the lake at Rorschach taking a different route back across the hills surrounding the town but always making for the blue sky and the sun ahead of us. In the late afternoon we arrived in the town and found a car park and took the short walk to the lakeshore. The sun was shining now and the sky was a brilliant blue, and although the town had a Saga like feel, it was pleasant and safe and all that I needed to make this perfect was a bar.

We found somewhere nearly perfect, a swimming club building built on a promontory extending into the lake and with tables and chairs with a stunning view of the water looking out over to Germany on the other side of the water. We spent a leisurely hour drinking beer and eating ice cream and then we walked along the promenade and back to the car. Sally’s navigational skills continued to astound me and although I had completely forgotten the route back out of the town she negotiated our short drive to the hotel effortlessly.

On the block: Lehman art for under $2,000. The first batch of artworks from the collection that once

On the block: Lehman art for under $2,000.

The first batch of artworks from the collection that once filled the corridors of Lehman Brothers’ offices will be hitting the auction block on November 1. And while the works by David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Rauschenberg may be small potatoes for museum curators, the collection provides the opportunity for aspiring patrons of the arts to pick up brand-name artists for under $2,000. Bankers looking for an elegant office decoration — and one with a conversation-starting provenance — should check out the catalogue at freemansauction

Obviously, Lehman’s creditors, who have lost most of their money, are hoping Freeman’s will be able to generate more proceeds than have been estimated. Freeman’s will also be auctioning off another 30 lots of European fine paintings, from the Lehman collection, on December 6, and another 500 lots, or so, also from the Lehman collection, on February 12 of next year. These two subsequent auctions are not expected to generate much in the way of proceeds either, according to Henry, perhaps between $280,000 and $430,000 from the two sales.

The modest valuations on these first groups of artworks from the Lehman collection stand in sharp contrast to the priceless art collection once owned by Robert “Bobbie” Lehman, one of the patriarchs of the investment bank. When Lehman died in 1969, his foundation donated some 3,000 of his artworks to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, on Fifth Avenue. The museum has called that Lehman collection “one of the most extraordinary private art collections ever assembled in the United States.” The Robert Lehman wing of the museum opened in 1975.

The collection being sold by Freeman’s is also not part of the personal collection of Dick Fuld, the former CEO of Lehman, and his wife, Kathy. The Fulds sold a group of 16 artworks through Christie’s last November for around $13.5 million below the $20 million the auction house guaranteed the couple. Kathy Fuld is on the board of the Museum of Modern Art.

Still, the 283 lots that Freeman’s will be selling early next month do include any number of iconic images by many familiar artists. For instance, there is a group of 10 Berenice Abbott photographs of New York City street scenes (as well as one of the Flatiron Building) on which Freeman’s has placed a seemingly modest price range of between $6,000 and $10,000. There is a set of nine Walker Evans photographs of the Brooklyn Bridge, priced at $1,000 to $1,500. There is a Christo print of wrapped buildings in lower Manhattan ($1,000 to $1,500) and a signed Alexander Calder print ($800 to $1,200). There is a 1973 David Hockney print of spring flowers in a vase that Freeman pegged at between $7,000 and $10,000.

A Roy Lichtenstein print, “I Love Liberty” from 1982, is estimated to fetch between $15,000 and $25,000. The Lichtenstein is one of the few lots being sold subject to a reserve price, or floor, so that if a minimum bid is not received the artwork will not be sold. Most of the collection, however, will just be sold without a price floor, which may be why Freeman’s has put relatively low price ranges on a number of the pieces.

There are also a number of prints by artists such as Jim Dine, Louise Bourgeois, Claes Oldenburg, Wayne Thiebaud, Yaccov Agam, Alex Katz, Robert Motherwell, Louise Nevelson, Frank Stella, Robert Indiana, and Andy Warhol. In many ways, the collection is very typical of what Wall Street banks and law firms use to line the many walls of their offices. There are also a slew of works by lesser-known artists as well as French, Indian, and Chinese artists.

Although the dollar amount is relatively small, selling the collection is a bit of a coup for Freeman’s. Usually, one of the three titans in the auction art market, Christie’s, Sotheby’s (BID), or Phillips, would be expected to sell such a collection. But Kelly Wright, an art advisor to Lehman, conducted a beauty contest earlier in the year and Freeman’s was selected. “We are very excited about it,” Henry said. “This is a very important provenance in the art world and there are number of top quality artworks being sold in good condition.” Of course, Freeman’s will get its pound of flesh. The auctioneer will add 25% on the first $20,000 of the hammer price of each lot, and 20% on the portion from $20,001 through $500,000.

In its glossy and colorful 250-page catalog, Freeman’s does acknowledge, briefly, the circumstances that led to the sale: “The company’s history ended abruptly in September 2008, when it was forced into bankruptcy during the recent financial crisis.” Not quite as dramatic sounding as the fall of the Medici, a previous patron of the arts whose banking empire was undone by fiscal mismanagement, but nevertheless a sign of our times

A few days ago, Real Madrid was beaten by Utah Jazz in the match of the NBA European Tour that took place here in Madrid. Why not having a walk through typical American places, shops and flavours?

We can start out by visiting Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, where we will find in its permanent collection some canvases by some of the most important American artists. Maybe the famous Woman in the Bath by Roy Lichtenstein, or Richard Estes’ Nedick’s, where the master of photorealism shows a fast-food shack with the Coca-Cola sign in amazing detail.

Source: peggysues.es

After contemplating this work, we can’t help booking a table at Peggy Sue’s restaurant, which imitates the style of the American cafes of the 1950’s, in pink and light colours. We listen to Aretha Franklin’s and Chuck Berry’s music from the jukebox while we taste, for example, a hotdog, onion rings, a strawberry milkshake and, of course, hamburgers. Or would you like a Mary Lou with bacon? Another place to eat hamburgers in Madrid is the Home Burger Bar, always served with a homemade coleslaw.

Source: telva.com

If we want to get deeper in American food, we shouldn’t miss visiting Taste of America, a unique food shop where we can find anything, from the traditional American apple pie to all kinds of sodas, pop-corn, chocolates and sauces, including Newman’s Own, with a picture of a smiling Paul Newman, which are one of the most famous products in the United States to season salads and pasta.

Source: esmadrid.com

We go on shopping and we get to the heart of the Golden Mile to visit Tommy Hilfiger’s shop and continue to the Salesas Quarter, where, a year ago, the Newyorker designer Marc Jacobs opened his shop in Madrid, a shop with large windows which used to house a Mini dealers shop. Pure glamour… Now we’re talking about glamour, is there a best way to end the day than drinking a genuine Manhattan cocktail? A very cosmopolite cocktail prepared to perfection in Bar Chicote. Have a good journey!

As unreliable as it is, I often check Wikipedia for any new additions to the Eurovision 2010 article

As unreliable as it is, I often check Wikipedia for any new additions to the Eurovision 2010 article; who the hosts might be, where and when etc…but recently I have been growing apprehensive about the lack of nations coming forward to confirm their participation. In addition, there are multitudes that cannot seem to make their minds up (pardon the 1981 reference!) about whether or not to come at all. Currently sitting at 26, the number of confirmed countries at the moment is sufficient for the old days of one final – but not the three-day extravaganza that we now know and love! For example, I currently see that Austria, Monaco and Italy are still refusing to participate despite my ESP-like demands that they come back (seriously, what is Italy’s problem? They left on such a high note!), which is no real surprise. But to make matters worse, Luxembourg will NOT be there, the Czechs have already withdrawn and Estonia and Andorra are considering doing the same. If things continue like this ESC 2010 will be a very sad affair indeed. On a more positive note, I am happy to see that countries who failed miserably this year have got straight back up on the horse for another go – and why shouldn’t they? I’m talking to you, Finland/ Germany/ Malta! Plus Lichtenstein is set to make its debut which I am v. excited about, and San Marino are considering returning after money troubles forced them to miss out in 09. I know this has been a rather boring post, but look out soon for my exposé (ooh) on Eurovision’s most successful/ most enthusiastic competitors of the last decade! xx

Fig.1. Vicky, 1964.

Fig.2. Hawkman, 1962.

Fig.3. Devil doll, 1963.

Fig.4.Chiquita, 1964.

Fig.5. Candy, 1965

Fig.6. Miss Corn Flakes, 1964.

Fig.7. Banana Split, 1971.

Fig.8. Nude brunette, 1965

Fig.9. Nude descending a staircase , 1989.

Fig.10.Chiquita banana, 2007.

80 kr förlorade i kväll alltså. Saldo just nu: 205,73 kr.
