Lichtfaktor n’est pas un groupe de métal allemand, ni une usine à pourboire. Non, c’est un collectif d’artistes allemands (ah quand même), de Cologne plus précisément, spécialisé dans l’art du light painting.

Ces artistes sont bien équipés et n’utilisent pas qu’une lampe torche pour leurs créations. En effet ils fabriquent leurs propres “lights”, et on trouve parfois des choses assez surnaturelles :

Julien Vallee is a graphic designer based in Montreal, Canada and Berlin. He’s currently working on a range of projects including art direction, motion graphic, print design, art installation and video for the music industry. His work is very distinctive and unique because it usually involves using brightly coloured card and paper to create something 3D with visual impact.

The members of German group Lichtfaktor use light to give expression to their creativity. They take advantage of a variety of light sources to produce photos and videos in cities by night. They create films by taking a series of long exposure images and putting them together frame by frame. Watch

Lego characters give a humorous effect when put into surreal surroundings. And by using macro stop motion animation the characters can come to life. The image above was taken by flickr user Jeremy van Bedijk (jere-me). Watch

BBC2 uses the number 2 to represent the channel in its idents. Creating the number 2 in different ways makes it more interesting, for example it can be animated. The 2 shown above was knitted by flickr user Gillian (hey, mippy).

The image above is very eye-catching and uses a simple technique. Taking life size head shots of people and holding it in front of your face. I saw a similar thing done by Smooth FM on a TV advert, where a vinyl sleeve was held up instead to match the body of the person holding it (look here). The image above was made by Jason Smith on Flickr.

I also saw this on flickr and thought it was a brilliant idea, but maybe more suited to a science based TV channel. However the concept is great and links to the slogan “MTV is a virus”. The creator is Ross Colquhoun. This work also featured in The Sunday Times and on the BBC. Watch

Durante um workshop no Ars Eletronica do ano passado

Gosto da forma como as obras colocam espaço e luz em diálogo. É como se as formas se tornassem tão efêmeras quanto o flash que as percorre. E as linhas fazem uma composição harmônica com a paisagem arquitetônica. Nessa daí de cima, é quase como se as luzes fizessem parte do croqui do porto, concorda?

E esse “bicho”? Não parece um grafite que se soltou de algum muro e saiu pela cidade? O reflexo no chão é um detalhe fantástico.

Pra quem ficou fã do trabalho deles, assim como eu, tem mais coisa lá no site do Lichtfaktor. Até porque, os caras acabaram de inventar uma “impressora de luz”, pra escrever e desenhar no ar… Né?

Step into the Future of Graffiti Art

With Graffiti becoming a global problem for our governments and harsher and stronger laws being put into effect, Graffiti artists are finding it tougher to express their art without facing the consequences.

This can deter a lot of artists and may see the end of Graffiti Art as we know it. But luckily a group of forward thinking artists are taking humble Graffiti to the next level in the form of Light Graffiti.

Light Graffiti is a photographic technique in which exposures are made usually at night or in a darkened room by moving a hand-held light source or by moving the camera. In many cases the light source itself does not have to appear in the image. The term also encompasses images lit from outside the frame with hand-held light sources.   

Anyone who has checked long time exposure on cameras already knows the basics of Light Graffiti writing. It´s a simple but efficient photo and animation technique, which has developed only within the last decade.

It is by no means a new thing. Pablo Picasso already worked out this technique in his own way. Picasso was photographed ‘painting’ a quick sketch in mid-air in a darkened room with a torch, and the image was composited with a shot of Pablo in a studio to create the effect of painting with light.

Using this new method, a number of graffiti artists have been tagging the impossible without being caught. How? – it’s actually not illegal for them. They’re not using paint and they are not leaving a long term, ‘hard copy’ of their artwork on public or private property. Though this form of graffiti exists in cyberspace at the moment it wont be long before we see it in art installations in our cities. 

As it turns out, time-lapse photography isn’t just for blooming flowers, skyscapes, or brake lights anymore. Tag artists are taking their ‘colour’ to an all new level.

The light can either be used to selectively illuminate parts of the subject or to ‘paint’ a picture by shining it directly into the camera lens. Light painting requires a sufficiently slow shutter speed, usually a second or more. Like night photography, it has grown in popularity since the advent of digital cameras because they allow photographers to see the results of their work immediately.

Light painting can take on the characteristics of a quick pencil sketch. Flash lights or light pens or LED ‘throwies’ can also be used to create Full Bleed images. Different colored lights can be used to project an image on the CCD.

Making a light graffiti doesn’t necessarily need to be done in a dark room or at night. Sometimes using artificial light, like LEDs and mobile phones, or through the limited sunlight beaming in a curtained room creates a shadowing effect. Using a mirror creates a double image, which adds up to a more creative result.

Light Graffiti is also known as Light Writing/ Light Painting.

Recognition – Gathering Momentum

Darklight is the first international Light Graffiti writing festival, paying tribute to this virtual graffiti and urban space art. It’s goal is to invite the most outstanding artists of this genre to Berlin for one week to hold workshops, jam-sessions and to organise the exhibition for the public.

“LightWriting” kombiniert Stop Motion Animation, Graffiti und Licht miteinander und ermöglicht somit beeindruckende Videos und Fotos. Während Urlaubsfotos wegen Überbelichtung und unerwünschter Lichtstreifen keine Verwendung mehr finden, machen sich “LightWriter”, wie die Jungs und Mädels von Lichtfaktor, in der Dunkelheit an die Arbeit, um aus genau diesem Effekt Kunst zu machen. Unter dem Motto “Energy in Motion” sind sie mit ihrem ersten Video LIGHTSTROM auf eine Reise durch deutsche Städte gegangen.

Elmo: I absolutely love graphic design. One of my favorite artists are the guys from Lichtfaktor. Coming from Germany is always a plus too. Lol.
The collective from Cologne, consisting of members $ehvermögen and JIAR are experimenting with various sources of light to make their pictures and movies. They even give you an instruction how to do it.

Finally the red and white LEDs came in and I never knew how exciting a flashlight would be.

Although this experiment brought me at a dead end with the drawing project: What gets carried away and what gets left behind, it was still a very valuable experience and I hope to apply this means of medium for future projects.

I wanted to try other colors unfortunately the shipments hadn’t arrived on the day they were supposed to.
