Inaugura il 9 Dicembre alle ore 18.30 la mostra collettiva “Colla” a Lido di Venezia. Si tratta di un evento curato da Matilde Favaro che vedrà partecipare giovani artisti provenienti dalla facoltà di design e arti dell’università IUAV. Si tratta di un’iniziativa che vuole svincolarsi dal circuito studentesco e universitario per aprirsi indipendentemente al mondo artistico, in totale autonomia, portando alla luce nuove tendenze e sguardi sul mondo d’oggi.

In questa occasione presenterò un estratto da un lavoro in via di pubblicazione, intitolato “the crystal cathedral”, basato sulla letteratura dell’autore inglese James Ballard e in particolare sul suo romanzo “la foresta di cristallo”.

L’ingresso è libero e il vernissage verrà seguito da una serata di performance e musica presso la Zona Bandita, vicino Piazzale Roma a Venezia, con inizio circa alle ore 21.00.

La mostra sarà aperta con i seguenti orari:

Mercoledì 9 Dicembre: 18.00-21.00

Giovedì, venerdì e sabato: 16.30 – 19.00

Domenica 13 Dicembre: 10.00-12.00/ 16.00-19.30

Gli artisti saranno presenti per tutta la durata dell’evento presso lo spazio espositivo, a disposizione totale dei visitatori.

So, it’s elevenses time or mid-afternoon and you’re meeting a friend. My guess is that most of us would reach for a coffee of some description (understandable as tea in most cafes/coffee chains isn’t worth drinking), a latte or a cappuccino, and a huge slice of sticky, overly sweet cake, a cupcake or a muffin.

Lovely Lido

All very well but when you find somewhere like the Lido in Bristol and they serve delicious loose leaf tea what you really want is something lighter and more refined. What on earth happened to a lovely light and snappy biscuit? Luckily at the Lido poolside bar they have a very clever lady called Laura! She makes some truly lovely little treats that are just perfect with a cup of tea. I’m particularly partial to her Baby Palmiers with my pot of Earl Grey tea. If you have the change please go and try them for yourself.

Chatting to the ever-so lovely Fiona Beckett about lovely food and drink finds for her new blog, we were bemused at just how many crackers and biscuits there are to pair with cheese yet so little choice of really good biscuits to have with tea. It got me thinking and I’m on the hunt for the perfect little bite of just sweet enough and buttery enough goodness to be the perfect accompaniment to Lahloo Tea.

I’m starting by making some biscuits tonight and I’ll take them to St Catherine’s Artisan Christmas Market in Frome tomorrow, Sunday 29th November 11-6pm. The lucky shoppers will be our testers – Spelt, honey and cinnamon crisps and Lemon Sables. I’ll report back…

I’ve been back in Sydney for 6 weeks now & love taking the time out to rediscover this city.  There have been so many lovely days, so it’s not difficult to be motivated to pick up the camera & go for a walk.  On this day I walked from Bellvue Hill to the city (approx. 3hrs) passing Woolloomooloo Wharf….

Then headed toward the Botanic Gardens, passing the Andrew (Boy) Charlton pool, situated in the Domain, overlooking the Navy base…..

then I  sat with an ice-cream for a well earned rest. I loved this day – just taking it all in, appreciating the gorgeous landscape, sunshine & open spaces.

yep…. I certainly did have a lovely day rediscovering Sydney

Otra noche nos aventamos a ir al Lido de Paris  que también es famoso por sus bailes y bailarinas, y aunque el show ni el lugar son tan grandes como el Moulin Rouge, el Lido tiene unas casetas privadas desde las cuales puedes ver el show, pero son más caras que sentarte con los demás. Además parte de los viajes es conocer a las personas del país en el que estás de vacaciones. En el salón general puedes sentir la atmosfera parisiense como si estuvieras en una película, la música y los bailes hacen que te sientas en medio de un musical. Padrísimo. La banda tenía una cantante muy buena con una voz extraordinaria que aunque cantaba en francés le ponía muchísimo sentimiento a su canto. Pensábamos que el lugar estaría lleno de turistas pero y también había franceses aunque no nos quedó claro si eran de la capital o de algún otra provincia.

Wenn es sich nur irgendwie ermöglicht, die Horrors live zu sehen, tut es! TUT ES!
Es war ja so guuuut.

Aber immer der Reihe nach:
Support war S.C.U.M.
Als als erstes: Wen mir jemand sagen könnte, wie alt die Herrschaften sind, nur her mit der Info.
Ich war schon leicht geflasht, wie jung die aussahen.
Man muss jedoch sagen, dass sie als Support echt gut gewählt waren.
Vom Sound her haben sie sehr gut zu den Horrors gepasst.

Nun aber zu denHorrors.
Das komplette Set (inklusive Zugaben) ging genau eine Stunde.
Erwähnenswert hierbei:
Das Hauptset bestand komplett nur aus Primary Colurs, plus Whole New Way und minus Do You Remenber.
Nichts mit alten Sachen.
Aber: Es hat so gut gepasst. Es war wunderbar. Wenn sie da alte Sachen mit reingemischt hätten, hätte das alles nicht mehr so gewirkt, wie es halt gewirkt hat.
New Ice Age war der absolute Hammer, ebenso NATÜRLICH Sea Within A Sea und Whole New Way.

ABER dann kamen die Zugaben…
… inklusive Count In Fives sowie Gloves.
Und  da gings dann richtig ab. Eskalation erster Güte.
(Wobei man amerken muss, dass das Publikum sonst etwas “lustlos”. Das hätte auch besser sein können.)

Fazit: Ich will mehr! Gebt mir mehr! Und Faris ist perfekt!

It’s not famous for its natural potential but London has some of the very best concrete respite in the UK.

When the “inner city pressure” overwhelms the best of us, there are plenty of places to walk it off or cry it out.

London is home to:

15 City farms (complete with animals, adventures and smiling children)

11 large parks (with heritage, rivers and the chance to see a celebrity)

11 Outdoor places to swim (A good alternative to other exhilarating remedies available in London)

and lots of other small parks, cemeteries, allotments and communal gardens in between

To conclude, it’s not Surrey (thank goodness) but London has a lot to offer. Recently voted the coolest city in Britain, the capital can be a place to rest as well as play.

However, much like a failing MP in Westminster, green space is in urgent need of protection, encouragement and positive press.

After an eight year absence, the 11th ceremony of the Hot d’Or Awards, the grand ceremony of French porn, made its return this week without missing a beat.

The event was held on the prestigious stage at the Salle Wagram in the City Of Lights – Paris, France – some 200 meters from the Place Charles de Gaulle-Etoile and a stone’s throw away from the Avenue des Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe.

In attendance was a plethora of porn elite including Jesse Jane, Jenna Haze, Alexis Texas, Katsuni, Jessica Drake, Kristina Rose, Christoph Clark and John Stagliano.

The overwhelming attendance of the mainstream journalistic press was an historic opportunity to give back to the French adult industry its place in mainstream media.

Evil Angel director Christoph Clark, nominated for Best Director of Gonzo, agreed “This ceremony is fantastic. It will be an unforgettable moment for me because I knew the first Hot d’Or 20 years ago. This will prove to the media that pornography is always.”

French director and nominee John B. Root echoes Clark’s thoughts “We have a great need of sequins and media, reminding people that the X is primarily a genre with artists. By coming out to Hot d’Or, the media restores speech to people who do this job and they return the cameras and the press to this kind of art, which still has plenty to say.”

“This is the ceremony where everyone should be,” admits nominee Mike Angelo, in the race for the title of Best Performer. “An old image when it was still the difference between amateur and professional. The time has come!”

In the history of the Hot d’Or, the Salle Wagram succeeds Lido, which hosted the ceremony in the capital in 1997, for the first time alternating with the tradition of Cannes. Formerly devoted to evenings of the Napoleonic Empire, the stage has seen the likes of Maria Callas, Georges Carpentier, Rostropovich and Lino Ventura. Created in 1865, this space of 850 square meters entirely wooded, with balcony, is the ideal setting for a gala dinner, followed by a lavish awards ceremony, presented by 1970s porn sensation Brigitte Lahaie, to honor France’s Hot Video Magazine’s 20th Anniversary.

Jesse Jane says with wide-eyed amazement, “This place is beautiful, it looks like a ballroom. Kinda like a French castle – you’re in a big, huge, grand

ballroom of a French castle. It’s very classy with all the columns and the detailed chandeliers. I was excited before but now I’m really excited because this place makes you want to dress up. This is gonna amplify everybody being all done up. It’s not going to feel like your typical porn awards show. I love France. I love the Hot d’Or show. I’m so glad to be here. Ooo La La!”

“I’m very grateful to win this award. For all the people that voted for me and to be recognized internationally as an actress out of the thousands of girls that are in the industry, that’s a big deal,” says Jane of her Best American Actress award.

“This is my first time out of the states. Coming to Paris is just great. It is breathtaking to have a ceremony here. Everything is so graceful, it’s unbelievable,” Kristina Rose says visibly excited. Nominated for Best American Starlet, the California actress didn’t hesitate for a second to cross the Atlantic to attend the Hot d’Or. “I came with Mr. Pete and Alexis Texas. We are all nominated and once we found out, we knew we absolutely had to come here. It’s like living in a dream. I would bet that this is the best ceremony in the business. Even better than the U.S., though I probably shouldn’t say that. There is something very classy here. It really is totally different than any award show in the states.”

When asked what she thought of the European girls Alexis Texas replies, “I’ve seen some with very big tits. I like the big boobies.” I guess after such a long transatlantic flight, we know where her mind was.

Kayden Kross, who later took home Best American Starlet, must have been on the same flight as Alexis. When asked about the differences between the U.S. and France she springs to life with, “there are so many gorgeous people in this country it’s not even fair! I’m eyeing a few really gorgeous performers that I’ve never met before. Like that blonde over there with the ponytail.” Kayden must have a good eye because it just so happens she’s talking about euro-hottie Tarra White, who picked up a few awards of her own including Best European Actress. “I named her my nymph. I love her. I’ll meet her later!” Kross says enthusiastically.

Jessica Drake seems genuinely shocked to be recognized so far away from home, “A lot of people seem to know who I am. It feels strange. I go to introduce myself to them and they stop me with ‘Oh My God, I know you!’ It’s very exciting that the Hot d’Or is back. I was already here for the last edition in Cannes and I’m really happy to be back! There is a glamorous side that comes with this unique event and the international recognition is absolutely incredible.”

The international craze also agrees with Dana DeArmond, who made the trip just to accompany her friend Bobbi Starr, who’s nominated for Best American Performer. For DeArmond, the Hot d’Or represent “a very important event, especially when considering returning to the United States. When people learn that we were in Europe for a ceremony, our popularity breaks through the roof!”

“Having a Hot d’Or is truly coveted,” says French actress Katsuni, who took home the award for Best French Actress and Best Actress Blog. “It’s so good to be recognized in your own country!” On the Best Blog award she continues, “I was not expecting it at all. Generally people like hard[core], but my blog is super soft so I didn’t think it would be successful.”

“For me the Hot d’Or Awards were before. All the stories I heard from others who told me about the ‘big time.’ Unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity to live it. So today I’m delighted it’s back. Vegas is Vegas, the city of excess. But Paris is the Parisian chic, it has lots of charm, the American dream. So it’s really nice to have this event here.”

But the final word rests with the enthusiastic Kristina Rose: “It’s so good to be here I think about saving as much as possible to come live here! Just this …”

“Wir leben auf der Milchstraße”

All I ever wanted / All I ever needed / Is here in my arms / Words are very unnecessary / They can only do harm. Ja, bei diesen Zeilen kommt sicher jedem von uns das eine oder andere traurige Andenken hoch. Damit es nicht zu traurig wird, lege man sich ein Hirschgeweih in die Arme und schaukle es sanft. Komisch? Nein, das ist einfach die Interpretation des Depeche Mode Hits „Enjoy the Silence“ auf moriartisch, wie man sie am Sonntag als Schlussakt des 5. Francophonic  Festivals erleben durfte.

Was diese Künstler kreieren, könnte man als Ergebnis vielfältiger „transpositions d’art“ beschreiben, als ein Mosaik unterschiedlichster Genres der Kunst. Moriarty bedienen sich zwar vorranging des Mediums Musik, aber das, was sie ihrem Publikum am Sonntagabend präsentierten Konzert zu nennen, erfasst schier die Bandbreite dieser Formation nicht. Es war ein Spektakel, das man sich ansehen und erleben musste, bei dem man, so man es wollte, mitsingen oder dazu tanzen konnte.  Auf der Bühne hebt dieses außergewöhnliche Quintett eine dem Laienzuschauer angewöhnte Band-Hierarchie von Sänger – Gitarrist– Schlagzeuger – Rest einfach auf. Jedes Mitglied ist nicht nur musikalisch bedeutend, sondern ebenso integral im Bühnenbild und in der Performance verhaftet und irgendwie immer im Mittelpunkt. Auch wenn man einräumen muss, dass die Aura, welche Rosemary umgibt, zusammen mit ihrer unglaublichen Stimme wohl am direktesten unter die Haut geht, da diese auch auf der Bühne Studioqualität und somit einen Wiedererkennungswert besitzt.  Hier nun einige Elemente eines Spektakels, die sich nur live erleben lassen: beispielsweise das nicht nur herrlich anzusehende Spiel des Kontrabasses, der kurze Xylophon-Exkurs, die mich in die Welt des Blues tragende sich mit dem Künstler bewegende Mundharmonika oder der zeitweise am Boden liegende und sich der Dinge erfreuende Gitarrist Arthur, der uns auch später ein kurzes Interview gab. “Die anderen von unten zu sehen war eine fabelhafte Erfahrung.” Nein, keine Drogen und sehr selten Alkohol. Moriarty eben. Zur Erinnerung –the Almighty Oracle Blog schreibt: „ They have their own imaginary world and paint it around with each song.” Ja, das fühle ich nach diesem Abend noch mehr als vorher, da ich nur ihre Studioaufnahmen oder einige Konzertmitschnitte kannte. Eine wahrhafte Inszenierung, die Akt für Akt unterschiedlich funktioniert und viel Raum für Spontanes lässt.

Wo sie lebten, frage ich sie. In Paris, New York oder in den Hotels dieser Welt. “Auf der Milchstraße”. Das sei das einzige, dessen Arthur sich sicher sei.  Da war sie wieder, die augenzwinkernde Leichtigkeit Moriartys. Die Konzerttermine auf ihrer Homepage lassen der Band scheinbar kaum Freizeit. Arthur Moriarty stört sich daran nicht. Zim Moriarty, der Architekt unter den Moriartys, kümmere sich dennoch um die städtebauliche Bildung der restlichen Moriartys. Und diese freut’s. So wird jede Reise der Band auch eine touristische.

Nach dem Konzert war es nicht möglich, alle gemeinsam zum Interview zu bekommen, da jeder irgendwie mit mehreren Fans oder mit Signieren beschäftigt war. Das ist auch eine Sache, die Moriarty so einzigartig  macht. Jedes Bandmitglied scheint irgendwie sein Ding zu machen und zusammen ergeben sie dennoch ein in sich stimmiges Ganzes. Wie eine bewusst gewählte Familie. Das sehen auch die Fans des Moriarty-Landes so. So habe ich vor und nach dem Konzert mit einem französischen Pärchen  gesprochen, die Moriarty bereits vorher live gesehen haben und sie gefragt, was die beiden an der französisch-amerikanischen Gruppe mögen. Die Atmosphäre der Konzerte sei es – stets eine sehr intime, familiäre, auch wenn die Band in großen Clubs auftrete.

Als ich Arthur später davon erzähle, sagt er, sie müssten wohl einmal versuchen, auf der Bühne aggressiver zueinander zu sein. Keine gute Idee!

Eine ziemlich gute Idee hatte allerdings Ben, mein Blogpartner. Anstelle gewöhnlicher Interviews haben wir die Leute gefragt, die Konzerte von Moriarty und Peter von Poehl in drei Worten zusammen zu fassen.

Leider haben wir ihn nicht nochmal getroffen… Wenn du das liest, bleibst du dabei? Oder konnte sich Moriarty als Hauptact behaupten?

Am Donnerstag war es dann endlich soweit! Housse de Racket, Stuck in the Sound und Benjamin Diamond kamen ins Lido nach Berlin! Um 21 Uhr öffneten sich die Türen des Kreuzberger Clubs , 23 Uhr ging es schließlich los mit Housse de Racket. Dann kamen Stuck in the Sound auf die Bühne und schließlich Benjamin Diamond mit einem DJ-Set.

Schon beim Ankommen fühlte ich mich wie eine Deutsche in Frankreich.

Es waren wirklich fast ausschließlich französische Muttersprachler dort. Kein Deutscher wollte uns vor die Kamera kommen. Hm. Aber das ist doch ein französisches Festival in Berlin, Leute! Wo sind bitte die Berliner, die Bock auf Musik aus Frankreich haben? Schon beim ersten Artikel zu Benjamin Diamond sind wir durch Berlin gerannt und trafen dort niemanden an, der die Bands des Abends kannte. Außer einen, aber der ist selbst Musiker!  He, wir werden doch von allen immer  toll gefunden, weil wir angeblich so weltoffen sind. Dann kommen die Nachbarn schon mal und wir bleiben schön zuhause, oder wie?

Naja, wir haben uns dann entschieden unsere Videos mit deutschen Untertiteln zu versehen und hoffen, dass es beim nächsten Mal mehr Berliner bei den Konzerten zwischen den Exilparisern geben wird!

Aber dafür mal echt Hut ab für die Franzosen, die aus allen Ecken als Unterstützer am Start waren!

Sogar die Jungs von Housse de Racket:

Denn einfach hatte es Benjamin Diamond nicht…Viele der Gäste haben erst gar nicht begriffen, dass er schon loslegte und zogen im Raucherraum noch genüsslich an ihren Pausenzigaretten.  Andere waren nach Housse de Racket und Stuck in the Sound schon nach Hause gegangen. So standen wir zunächst  fast allein auf der Tanzfläche. Die Angst, dass die Leute vielleicht nicht bleiben würden, hatte Benjamin uns schon im Interview verraten. Dass die beiden Bands vor ihm live spielten und er aber für ein DJ-Set gebucht war, hielt er für schwierig. Aber irgendjemand hatte den Leuten dann mitgeteilt, es müsse getanzt werden. Und das hat irgendwie funktioniert. Das Lido  füllte sich langsam aber stetig und die Franzosen und die wenigen Deutschen tanzten!

Denn die Musik hat echt Spaß gemacht!

Das sagt auch Aniko, eines der Mädels hinter der Bar des Lido: „Benjamin Diamond – ja schade, dass er erstens nicht live gespielt hat, wie ich dachte und zweitens, dass er erst nach den beiden Bands aufgelegt hat, als alle Gäste schon im Begriff waren zu gehen. Die Musik war aber sehr tanzbar und mitreißend. Aber es war ja zu dem Zeitpunkt auch schon spät. Vielleicht hätte man das anders organisieren können. Ihn vielleicht zwischen den beiden Bands auflegen lassen.“ Ihr persönlicher Favorit des Abends waren übrigens die Jungs von Housse de Racket, von denen sie sich aufgrund der Beschreibung im Vorfeld schon die Platte besorgt hatte.

Wir haben für euch mit dem Künstler gesprochen!

Del: Warum bist du heute Abend in Berlin?

Benjamin: Na, weil ich für das Festival auftrete. Ok. Nein, im Ernst. Es ist cool, ich war schon mal hier, so vor ungefähr zwei Jahren für die Popkomm. Wir haben ein Festival mit meinem Label gemacht. Und ich kannte die Leute des Festivals, die mir vorgeschlagen haben hier zu spielen.

Del: Hast du schon mal mit den Künstlern gespielt, die heute Abend auftreten? Kennst du sie?

Benjamin: Ja, Housse de Racket haben in meiner Band gespielt. Naja, jetzt haben sie ihre eigene Band. Victor hat Schlagzeug mit mir gespielt und Pierre Gitarre. Das war meine Band für Liveauftritte.

Aber heute Abend mache ich lediglich ein DJ-Set und keinen Liveauftritt.

Del: Und warum?

Benjamin: Äh…  Anscheinend war ein Liveauftritt zu teuer. (lacht)

Del: Hast du schon mal in Berlin gespielt?

Benjamin: Ja, ich habe schon hier gespielt und habe auch mal hier gewohnt.

Del: Du kennst  Berlin also gut?

Benjamin: Ja, Berlin kenn ich gut find ich total toll!

Del: Und glaubst du, heute Abend wird es was anderes sein, einfach, weil es ein französisches Festival ist?

Benjamin: Immer, wenn  ich hier gespielt habe, war es jedesmal ein komplett  anderes Ding Als DJ habe ich bei Partys für große deutsche Labels aufgelegt. Also, das war dann schon anders. Zum Beispiel für das Label Perlon. Das ist einfach schon deswegen anders, weil du ein ganz anderes Publikum hast. Eine Party unter dem Motto „französisch“ zu organisieren, halte ich schon für etwas schwierig. Außer für diejenigen, die französische Musik mögen. Aber das heute Abend gibt einen Einblick in das, was gerade in Frankreich aktuell ist. Das ist nicht schlecht für Stuck in the Sound, die auch gerade auf Tour sind. Sie waren ganz schön sauer, weil sie nur ganz klein auf den Plakaten standen.

Del: Ah, ja?

Wie erklärst du dir, dass jeder deinen Namen kennt?

Benjamin: Ah, das weißt du doch…

Ich habe mein zweites Album bei dem deutschen Label  K7 gemacht

Del: Du hast aber selbst auch ein Label…

Benjamin: Ich habe einen Vertag mit K7 unterzeichnet und bin dann viel durch Deutschland getourt, nicht nur in Berlin. Ich habe ein bisschen überall gespielt.

Del: Man könnte sagen, heute Abend ist dann für dich ein bisschen wie zuhause spielen?

Benjamin: Nein, das nicht, aber ich bin nicht zum ersten Mal hier und kenne daher einige Sachen und habe quasi Anknüpfungspunkte.

Del: Und für deinen Auftritt heute? Bist du motiviert?

Benjamin: Ja, das ist schon cool. Ich hoffe vor allem, die Leute bleiben auch. Im Allgemeinen, ist es so, wenn es ein Konzert  gibt, bleiben die Leute eher nicht, um eine Clubatmosphäre zu haben. Der Gig geht bis 2 Uhr. Ich hoffe dennoch, dass  die Leute etwas bleiben werden. Im Allgemeinen kommen die Leute für das Konzert und hauen danach ab.

Del: Ja, aber du hast dennoch Fans heute Abend hier!

Benjamin: Ah, ja wirklich? Cool! Ich hoffe, die Leuten tanzen ein bisschen.

Del: Ja, dafür musst du gute Arbeit machen! Hast du deinen Fans irgendwas zu sagen?

Benjamin: Eh, bien je leur fais une bise!

Christin: Ich habe mit Sebastian Demmin von Micatone über dich geredet und er kannte sofort deinen Namen durch Stardust. Nervt dich das nicht manchmal?

Benjamin: Nein, das nervt mich keinesfalls. Aber es stimmt schon, das alles ist jetzt schon fast 10 Jahre her. Aber umso besser, wenn die Leute sich nur daran erinnern. Für mich ist das überhaupt kein Problem. Aber heute mache ich andere Sachen.

Christin: Wie würdest du deinen persönlichen Werdegang seit Stardust beschreiben?

Benjamin: Seit 10 Jahren habe ich nun mein eigenes Label, habe viele Leute kennen gelernt, habe viele  interessante Sachen erlebt, auch Enttäuschungen, ja, aber so ist das Leben.  Aber es stimmt schon, dass der Erfolg damals schon ziemlich atemberaubend war. Und das wiederum hat es mir ermöglicht, gewisse Dinge nach vorn zu bringen. Für mich war es der Anfang meiner musikalischen Kariere, besser gesagt, meiner professionellen Karriere. Auf der ganzen Welt gab es auf einmal Leute, die mich kannten. Das hat es mir erlaubt, vieles zu machen. Es gab mir vor allem viel Freiheit.

Del: Du hast eine echte künstlerische Laufbahn hingelegt!

Benjamin: Ja, das war wichtig für mich. Der Erfolg durch Stardust hat es mir erlaubt, das zu machen, was ich machen wollte. Natürlich habe ich auch viel Mist gemacht. Aber ich bereue nichts davon!  Manchmal hatte ich schon Gewissensbisse, aber wirklich bereut habe ich nichts.

Del: Was deinen künstlerischen Stil angeht, gehörst du zu den tiefgründigen.

Benjamin: Ich bin eigentlich Sänger. Und wenn ich meine Songs mache, packe ich da auch Vieles rein. Das ist dann schon tiefgründig.

Ich habe drei Alben selbst produziert. Und jetzt arbeite ich gerade an einem etwas anderen  Projekt. Ich habe gerade eine neue Band aufgezogen und werde also nicht alles selbst machen.

Del: Kannst du uns was davon erzählen?

Benjamin: Ja, ja. Im nächsten Jahr werde ich ein neues Album heraus bringen. Ich bin gerade noch dabei.

Del: Unter deinem Namen?

Benjamin: Nein, nicht unter meinem Namen. Es wird Manchild heißen. Wird sind im Moment noch am Komponieren. Ich habe einige Stücke geschrieben. Aber  nicht alles stammt von mir. Ich werde mich vor allem auf den Gesang konzentrieren. Wir teilen uns die Arbeit. Es sind nicht mehr meine Musiker, es ist eine richtige Band.

Del: Das wird also etwas Neues für dich sein?

Benjamin: Ja, das ist cool. Ich habe die Erfahrung  gemacht, allein zu arbeiten, zu versuchen ein Album zum Laufen zu kriegen. Und jetzt mache ich was anderes, das ist was ganz Anderes.

Del: Ich habe mir dein letztes Album angehört und fand, dass es echt sich echt nach Arbeit angehört hat.

Benjamin: Ja, ich habe echt Lust andere Sache zu machen und vor allem habe ich Lust mich Leuten zu arbeiten. An einem bestimmten Moment, wenn du ganz allein arbeitest, kommt dir ein Bild hoch und es ist, wie wenn du dich selbst im Spiegel anschaust. Auf einmal siehst du deine ganzen Schwächen. Und es ist wichtig mit anderen zu arbeiten, die dich zu dem zurück schicken, was du suchst. Das ist echt was Anderes, ganz andere Ideen, und ich brauche das. Letztendlich glaube ich, dass ich nicht dafür gemacht bin, alles immer allein zu machen. Auf andere zählen zu können ist eben auch wichtig. Das heißt nicht, dass ich allein keinen Bock habe, aber es ist eben auch eine gute Sache anderen zu vertrauen.

Del: Und kannst du das ohne Probleme?

Benjamin: Ja, das ist super. Alles geht total schnell und das ist gut so.

Del: Ein Glückskind also?

Benjamin: Nein, aber ja, klar!  Manchmal verbringe ich ziemlich viel Zeit über der Musik und am Bearbeiten der Stücke und so weiter. Zum Beispiel haben wir in diesem Sommer acht Stücke geschrieben. Das ging voll schnell. Davon werfen wir vielleicht sieben wieder weg und behalten nur ein einziges. Das ist eben Kreativität! Ja, es geht gut nach vorn.

I can’t actually remember what I was doing on specific days but fortunately I am an adept stapler (if that makes sense… basically I am keeping ticket stubs and the like in a notebook).  By the way, this gets really long:

• On the evening of the 4th, Kat and I sought out Russian food and we ended up at a place in Dongzhimen called Traktirr Pushkin.  I thought it was a decent meal, but it was substandard for Kat who has standards for such things.  When I got back to Ben and Verena’s, they were watching Twilight with Jake and I caught the last half hour or so and it was absolutely ridiculous.  Later, we watched The Proposal.
• October 5th: I got up relatively early and returned to the Summer Palace with Kat.  It was busier than when I first visited but it is the Golden Week.  We had lunch in Wudaokou and returned to Ben’s before going for Peking Duck with Ben, Verena, Jake, and Lorelei (who is in town from Shanghai) and her friends Cedric and Philippe.  We ate at Dadong which is supposed to be one of the best places for 北京烤鸭 roast duck in the city and while it was very good, I think I’ve had duck of equal or better quality in Toronto with less hype.  The accompanying dishes were all right.  Later, drinks in 三里屯 Sanlitun and the rest of them went clubbing at Destination but I went back to Ben’s and caught up on Desperate Housewives.
• On the 6th, I finally moved to Kat’s where I stayed the rest of my time in Beijing.  I met her at Miss Me Coffee & Cake where she spends most of her time after work, studying for her CFA.  That night, we went to see Zhang Yimou’s production of Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot at the Bird’s Nest with her roommates.  I enjoyed what I could of the opera itself and was very impressed with the tenor who sang the part of the Prince (and I have some thoughts on the production itself in the Bird’s Nest that I plan to write later), but omigood the family sitting across the aisle from us was sooooo annoying.  I basically had to tell them to shut up, except without words, because my Chinese ain’t so great yet.  I accepted mild chatter and eating-noises because we were in a stadium and people were clearly explaining to each other what was going on, but this family (a grown son and his parents) were literally just chatting: awful.
• The next day, Kat and I got our hair cut at a place just outside her apartment complex.  I think it went well.  This wasn’t one of those loud music-blaring salons that are so common, but I relatively low key one.  I insisted on skipping the first one we saw because of the crazy hair the staff member standing in the window had, and then we skipped the second one.  We ended up at the third because it had recognisable brands in the window.  Afterward, we had lunch with Michele (one of Kat’s roommates) and I think we just killed time meeting up with Ben, Verena, and her IR friends at Lush for trivia night.  The night ended again with dessert and the novelty of dining on swings.
• At this point, I’m having trouble distinguishing Thursday and Friday, but one of those days, we just hung out at Kat’s cafe and the Sculpting in Time in Lido and basically chilled out.  When we got home, we weren’t sure what we would do about dinner, but Kat’s other roommate Cameron had their fellow English teacher Brian (who I met on the plane), his Chinese girlfriend, and her friend over and they made dinner and it was yum.
• On the other day, we set out to the art district 操场地 Caochangdi.  It was really cool, and maybe that’s another post, but I hope to go back again, especially when it isn’t the holidays and when most of the galleries aren’t closed.  We did see a few cool exhibitions though.  After that, we made our way to 押宝路 Alien Street to look for better Russian food but somehow we ended up at the other location of Mirch Masala.  After that, we head to the Drum & Bell District to a 疆进酒吧 Jiangjinjiu Bar to check out something advertised as, “Panjir Uighur folk band make the sounds of Xinjiang heard in the alleys of Gulou.”
• Saturday was my last day in Beijing.  Kat and I went to 五道口 Wudaokou to have lunch with Ben at BLCU; said goodbye to him and Jake and later Verena.  Succeeded at buying some long underwear at Uniqlo (and wish I bought some more, because they’re comfy) but failed at finding any good ankle boots (apparently my feet are too big for China).  I bought some sandwiches and returned to Kat’s to chill out and get ready to leave.  Brian and Corey (also from the plane) were there for a little bit, and then Kat walked me to my taxi which got me to the station with perfect timing.  The driver was very friendly when we started talking during the crazy traffic jam close to the station.
• Sunday morning I got back and all was chill.
• Monday we went back to school and I think it went well.  I remembered thinking the day before that I return to spending about 7 RMB per meal on weekdays eating in the school cafeterias (as opposed to 30-50 RMB eating out in Beijing) but of course Marco texts me to say that a bunch of people are going out for Arab food again at the restaurant where we celebrated my birthday and we ended up spending almost 70 kuai per person.
• Yesterday was similarly chill except that we had our first (optional) evening class.  At first I thought, o no, but I actually liked the opportunity for a study hall sort of time to focus and work.  Li Laoshi will be there Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings from 7pm and I plan to make every Tuesday and Thursday as long as I can stand the cold.  Also, I met a friend of a friend of Jenny’s who will be going to study Spanish in Beijing so that the government can post her to a Spanish-speaking country to teach Chinese.  She seemed interesting and I hope to keep in touch.

An einem Donnerstagabend bei mildem Herbstwetter war ich vom Team des Francophonic-Festivals in das Kreuzberger Lido eingeladen worden, um mir die französische Band Stuck in the Sound anzuschauen. Offizieller Einlass laut Programmheft war 21:00 Uhr.

Pünktlich um 21:00 Uhr öffneten die Türen des Lido und ein relativ verhaltener Ansturm begann. Ein Großteil der bis dato anwesenden Gäste stand auf der Presse- und Gästeliste. Ich war gespannt was mich an diesem Abend alles erwarten würde.

Das Lido bot im Konzertsaal ausrechend Platz für knapp 600 Gäste. Meiner ersten Zählung zufolge waren es 21:30 ca. 80, eine eher magere Ausbeute um diese Uhrzeit.

An diesem Abend spielten 3 Acts – Housse de Racket, Stuck in the Sound und Benjamin Diamond. Um 22:20 spielte dann endlich die erste Band. Da ein anderes Blogger-Team vom Auftritt der Band Housse de Racket berichtet, gehe ich an dieser Stelle nicht weiter drauf ein.

Um 23:15 standen die 4 Jungs von Stuck in the Sound auf der Bühne. Die Band bestand aus einem Gitarristen, einem Gitarre spielenden Sänger, einem Bassisten und einem Schlagzeuger. Das gesamte Set war sehr gemischt gestaltet und bot für jeden der inzwischen 250 Zuhörer etwas. Immer wieder kommunizierte der Sänger mit dem Publikum, was auch prompten Anklang fand. Bewaffnet mit einer halbakustischen Gitarre und einer Kapuzenjacke, deren Kapuze tief ins Gesicht gezogen war, überzeugte er mit einer beeindruckenden Stimme, die auch sehr angenehm variabel eingesetzt wurde. Schnell kam der Vergleich mit Muse oder Radiohead auf, da die Kopfstimme des Sängers ab und an denen der Sänger beider Bands ähnelte.

Bassist und Gitarrist bewegten sich mitreißend und rhythmisch zur Musik, was dem Publikum gefiel und es Song für Song immer mehr mitwippen ließ. Die Drums trieben in verschiedenen Off-Beat-Variationen die Band an. Hin und wieder hatte ich jedoch das Gefühl, dass das Schlagzeug nicht ganz tight war. Der Stimmung auf und vor der Bühne tat das keinen Abbruch. Ab und an unerstützte der Bassist mit einigen Shouts den kopfstimmelastigen Gesang und auch der Schlagzeuger sang ab und an die Zweitstimme.

Stuck in the Sound

Die Kommunikation der Band wirkte angenehm locker – die Band sprach miteinander und hatte sichtlich Spaß. Kleine Showelemente, wie beispielsweise ein „Einfrieren“ in der Bewegung, komplettierten das Bühnenbild. Aufgrund der Spielweise und der Dynamik im Set waren Stuck in the Sound für mich die besten Band des Abends.

Insgesamt kamen Stuck in the Sound live sehr nah ans Album heran, sodass die Besucher, die im Vorfeld nur das Album der Band gehört hatten, keine Probleme gehabt haben sollten die einzelnen Songs wieder zuerkennen.

Viel zu bieten hatte der gestrige Abend im Lido Berlin in Kreuzberg. Zumindest für alle die, die sich nach der Arbeit und kurz vor dem Wochenende gern von französischen Elektro-, Rock- und Indiesounds in die freien Tage schicken lassen wollten. Auf dem Programm standen neben Benjamin Diamond und Stuck In The Sound auch Housse de Racket, die vor einiger Zeit ihr neues Album “Forty Love” vorgestellt haben.

Nach knapp 90 Minuten Wartezeit im Lido, das sich langsam, aber sicher, immer mehr füllte, ging es gegen 22.30 Uhr endlich los und die beiden Bandmitglieder von Housse de Racket machten sich auf den Weg auf die Bühne. Zu Beginn noch etwas unsicher, in welcher Sprache es sich am besten mit dem Publikum kommunizieren ließe, begann es in den ersten Minuten mit einem rockig-elektrischen Intro. Endlich kam etwas Bewegung ins Publikum und nach den ersten Stücken fanden dann auch immer mehr Leute den Weg in Richtung Band und Bühne.

In der nächsten knappen Stunde folgte dann eine rockige, elektronisch-angehauchte Darbietung der Beiden. Viele der anwesenden Leute aus dem Publikum gaben zwar vor Konzertbeginn an, Housse de Racket nicht gekannt zu haben, beim wohl bekanntesten Song der beiden, “Oh Yeah”, ergab sich allerdings ein anderes Bild – viele unterstützten die Beiden, sangen mit und tanzten mit. Insgesamt hätte man sich noch etwas mehr Leute auf der Tanzfläche gewünscht, gute Akustik und eine sehr coole Location konnten das allerdings wiedergutmachen. Nicht zu vergessen ist natürlich die überzeugende Arbeit der beiden Bandmitglieder – Victor le Masne und Pierre Leroux.

Die hier im Blog angesprochenen Einflüsse von Daft Punk und Phoenix wurden während des Abends gut deutlich, das Housse-de-Racket-Bild mit weißen Poloshirts in Tennismanier absolut bestätigt. Insgesamt erschien der Auftritt etwas zu kurz, aber schließlich standen mit Benjamin Diamond und Stuck In The Sound ja noch zwei andere Acts auf dem Abend-/Nachtprogramm. Und kurz vor Schluss, als Pierre und Victor endlich komplett auf Französisch mit dem Publikum ins Gespräch kamen, machte dann auch das Francophonic Festival seinem Namen alle Ehre – der Großteil der Fans kam erst dann richtig in Schwung, als es die beiden komplett in ihrer Muttersprache versuchten.

Off the shore of Venezia are several islands, including Murano and Burano. Murano is known for its glass, and Burano is known for its crocheting.

Another great Venice deal was our vaporetto (water bus) passes – three days unlimited travel for 22 euros each. Sounds expensive, we know, but it’s not the TTC! We took the “vap” to Murano one morning, and set off to find the nearest fornace where they would be blowing glass. Had to pay 5 euros each, but well worth it. First, we watched the assembly line where two artists and a handful of helpers were churning out leaves for an extravagant chandelier. Must have been huge because we watched them make somewhere between 50 and 100 ornate, curling leaves. Then, we were on to Marchello the Master who must also have owned the place because he was also signing the cheques. He had two helpers, and was making some incredible decorative faces coloured with different minerals that you could only see once the glass had cooled down.

We learned a lot about glassmaking, like that the pieces need to be placed in a cooler oven or else they will explode from cooling too quickly, and that safety equipment while handling molten glass is not required.

After becoming extremely warm from sitting beside the ovens for two hours we hopped back on the vap and got off at Burano (the Veneians were obviously not too creative when naming the islands). Here we saw Nonnas hunched over their needles crocheting tablecloths, baptism gowns, parasols and embroidery for jean bustiers (they seriously sold such things, and I overheard two ladies drooling over them). There wasn’t much to do in Burano, so we had a nap and a gelato and called it a day. Have we mentioned that afternoon naps have become a favourite pastime of ours??

Benjamin Diamond heißt eigentlich Cohen mit Nachnamen, aber weil der Frauen liebstes Ding wohl der Diamant ist, nun eben Diamond…  So die Mär. Auf jeden Fall ist der gebürtige Pariser ein echtes Multitalent: Musiker, Labelchef, Arrangeur, mehrere Instrumente kann er spielen und die Liste bekannter Namen, die sich durch seinen Lebenslauf ziehen, ist einfach zu lang zum Zitieren.

Auch wenn viele hier in Deutschland ihn nicht von seinem Namen her kennen, dürfte euch der Stardust-Titel „Music Sounds Better With You“ sicherlich was sagen, dem er 1998 seine Stimme lieh.

In der Compilation „French Attack 2“ ist Benjamin Diamond neben Größen wie Alex Gopher oder Mondkopf zu hören und er selbst beschreibt seinen Stil mit Soul, Psychodelic und Club… Mit Cruise Control ist 2008 sein drittes eigenes Album entstanden, erschienen bei seinem eigenen Label diamondtraxx. Ansonsten findet man Benjamin Diamond auch bei MySpace. Richtig geil ist aber der Titel des Albums: Cruise Control. Hallo? Wie bitte soll ich auf der Straße Leute finden, denen ich Cruise Control vorspielen soll? Wir sind im Herbst, nicht am Meer! Nix mit Strand und Sonnenschein und so… Aber ich versuche es trotzdem und – wie erwartet – klappt es nicht. Daher ist nun Eigeninitiative gefragt, um euch das Album vorzustellen. „This Is It“, denke ich mir und verlege kurzerhand unser Wohnzimmer nach Südfrankreich. Eine kleine Spritztour im Cabrio mit Benjamin Diamond auf den Ohren, da kann die Bratwurst gleich in den Müll und wieder der Bikin raus! Ab an den Strand, Leute! Es reicht ein einfacher Umzugskarton, ein bisschen Phantasie und dann ist alles kein Problem mit der Cruise Control! Seht selbst!

En voilà un nom de groupe… avant d’être un clin d’œil au tennis, les deux housses de racket expliquent que « ce nom était essentiellement leur manière de signifier qu’ils étaient là pour « racketter la house » ».
- « Racketter la house » vous avez dit ?
- Oui, tout a fait. Un plan simple et efficace n’est-ce pas ?  Devenir riche et célèbre en « rackettant ».

Si on continue de lire leur bio, assoiffés de vérités que nous sommes, on apprend que le groupe se compose de Victor et de Pierre, adolescents dans les 90’s qui se sont rencontrés au conservatoire municipal de Chaville (entre Paris et Versailles) parce que l’un des deux portait un t-shirt de Pearl
Jam ; c’est ça le hasard des rencontres. A l’époque le grunge fait des ravages chez les ados, tout semble donc possible : Il décide de monter un groupe. Le temps passe, le grunge décline, et la so-called “french touch” devient omniprésente : Daft Punk, Air, Phoenix : des « success stories » planétaires ! Tout cela va vite, très vite et s’exporte bien, très bien même !

Nos deux compères n’ont donc d’autres choix que de se laisser influencer. Ils songent un instant à appeler leur premier album « La vitesse des exportations » (ils chantent en français). Et puis non merde, c’est trop con, cela n’a pas de sens et surtout c’est imprononçable à l’étranger. Ce sera donc “Forty Love”.

Paru en 2008 sur le label Discograph (General Electriks, stuck in the sound ou encore Demis roussos), mixé par Renault Létang (le Nigel Godrich français ?) « Forty love » est un album « épique » avouent-ils. A la manière, de certains de leurs classiques qui racontent d’abord une histoire : Ziggy Stardust, L’Homme à tête de Chou, l’histoire de Mélodie Nelson, cet album est une histoire d’amour qui tourne mal dans un « virage »… Un récit de « fond de cours » en sorte ? Oui c’est ça, imaginé par des adolescents en fond de classe. Voilà, tout est dit sur le style et l’écriture des « lyrics ».

Pour le reste, la musique donc, on est en présence d’un formidable pot-pourri de tout ce que les « big names » de la french touch (Daft Punk, Air, Phoenix, Justice…) ont produit depuis dix ans.

On s’aventure même un peu plus loin dans le temps parfois, pour faire quelques clins d’oeil bien appuyés aux deux albums emblématiques de Gainsbourg, « l’homme à la tête de chou » sur le titre « champion » et « l’histoire de Mélodie Nelson » sur le titre « virage » ce qui permet sans doute de donner une « top credibility » au bordel à l’étranger (Gainsbourg étant plus connu que Johnny partout hors de France).

Alors ne me faites pas dire ce que je n’ai pas encore dit ! Tout cela est loin d’être mauvais (à part la voix et les textes tout de même…). Mais Dieu du Seigneur ! Pourquoi deux gars qui sont donc loin d’être des tacherons, se retrouvent à produire un recueil de citations… Pourquoi gaspillent ils leur savoir faire à enregistrer par exemple un titre comme « Sur le papier » qui sonne comme un mauvais clone de Phoenix ?! Je m’emporte, alors que la réponse est en haut : « pour devenir riche et célèbre en rackettant » même les idées musicales des autres s’il le faut… Ok, je m’incline, c’est imparable.

Reste à savoir ce que nos deux compères donneront sur scène le 08/10/2009 au Lido à Berlin aux côtés des Stuck in the Sound. Et comment le public réagira,  curieux de savoir moi !
