I read a nice quote the other day about writing

I think this is so important for people to keep in mind. If you don’t love it, don’t do it! If you don’t feel as though your life depends on writing (or whatever you may love) find something else to do.

The thing about doing something for a living is that you need to do it. I abhor when people tell me about how much they hate their job: why are you doing it if you hate it? You are better off quitting, and finding something you like better*.

Even if you are not doing something that you NEED to do for yourself (like writing) you should at least enjoy what you are doing. I for example would never get a job in a cubicle … I just cannot do it. I see it as a waste of my time to be stuck doing something I hate just to pay the bills. And to me, being in a cubicle, nine-to-five is the upmost horror.

I just thought I would mention that. This is just how I feel; life is too short to hate something.

My inner philosopher wants to come out right now and say that some people cannot quit their jobs despite their wanting to because they don’t have free will … just ignore her. That is a very convoluted topic (and a sore spot for most people), so I’m going to ignore any arguments against or in favor of any free will theory. Other comments are very much welcome.

One of my co-workers told me that she was so proud of me for coming back to work and staying strong and getting the job done.  She said that I was very strong.

Some days, I feel strong… some days I feel weak.  Sometimes weakness leads to strength.  Occasionally, strength dissolves to weakness.  Grief is a strange beast.

Earlier this week, I noticed that the one jeep tire was low.  John has cool caps for the jeep that are green if the tire is full and turn red if it is low.  The passenger rear was 1/2 red.

The evening got off to a rough start (not including the tire).  I went to take Nathaniel out while I fed.  He enjoys playing with rocks.  When you’re a year old, it’s really cool to pick up rocks & put them on a plate.  Don’t ask me why, but it is.  It has occupied him for days!  As long as he doesn’t eat them, get dust in his eyes, or get too filthy, I’m fine with it.  Happy toddler= happy mom!

Well, it was raining when I headed out… just a drizzle, but a COLD drizzle.  Not weather that a youngster needed to be out in if it could be avoided.  So, I stuffed Nathaniel in the pack & play on the porch and decided to turbo feed.

Nathaniel promptly decided that was not appropriate… he’d rather be in the drizzle plating rocks.  So, he screamed…. and screamed… and screamed…

I fed quickly.

Then debated the pros and cons of filling the tire.  I needed gas in the Subaru and didn’t have time to stop for gas.  I could chance the tire.  But… probably not the smartest move.  Adding air to a tire is complex enough… attempting to change a tire is out of my league for right now.

So, I decided to fill the tire.  John had recently gotten a new air compressor.  He’d gotten it with the idea that it would be easy for me to use.

Well… he over-estimated my abilities.  I’ve tried to use it several times and end up letting more air out of the tires than I’m putting in.  I’ve quit in disgust several times with the John Deere tire.  Threw up my hands and found a man to help.

Well… that evening there was no man… there was no help.

So, I figured that I had to be smarter than the air compressor… it can’t be THAT difficult.

It started poorly… the tire gauge was loosing air.  I was loosing patience.  Nathaniel was screaming…. and screaming… and screaming.

There I was… sitting on the ground in the cold drizzle, with a baby screaming and no help… loosing air.  I thought… this is my life… this is reality.  I was so frustrated.  I wanted to cry, but what good would that do.

Then somehow I got the positioning correct and air went into the tire.  I stopped, re-capped, and took the baby inside.  I even had time for a shower before work.  Everybody lived.  Tire was filled.  Life went on.  I accomplished something.  I don’t feel like I was proficient and learned a new skill.  I think luck and persistence is what got me through that task.

In the end… it’s whatever works.  I know that my new life won’t always be pretty.  It won’t always be easy.  It won’t ever be the same.  I  will have happiness.  I will have deep sadness and loneliness.  But, life continue till the end (how is that for a profound statement).  Life is to short to wallow in despair.  Anger is a wasted emotion (Thanks, Steve, for reminding me).  Hopefully, I have a lot of living left to do.

Most importantly, I never want to be in the position where Nathaniel grows up and tells people about his childhood and says, “My mom gave up.”  “My mom quit.”  “My father’s death left my mother in shambles.”  I want him to grow up and say that he had a great childhood and his mother raised him well.  I want him to know how much his father loved him… loved us… and what a great person he was.  I hope that Nathaniel grows up to be a lot like his father… a good person… moral… ethical… true to himself… honest… hardworking… courageous… with an awesome sense of humor… a thinker… a fighter… confident… faithful… committed… loyal… intelligent… dedicated… and so many other things that John was…

The sun rises, the sun sets, time passes on… how you chose to use your time is up to you.  I don’t want life to pass me by.  Onward & upward.

I am often online looking for new items…either for myself, or something I feel my readers may like. Lately I have been thinking about organizing our home. My plan is to do it after my last class, which will be Monday, August 24, 2009. I plan to take a 4 month break before I return to school. During this time I plan to organize all areas of our home…including the basement.

I did some checking around, and I came across a really good site. Chez Larsson. There is some wonderful information on this site, and I am in awe of the neatness of the spaces organized. Here is a photo from the site.

I would definitely like to have a section of the basement as a laundry area, then the other side will be my craft section.

My wife and are are planning to re-do the bathroom soon. I love a neat, organized bathroom. In addition to it being neat and organized, it also has to be functional. It is of no use unless it’s functional. I came across some pictures of some really nice bathrooms over at decorology. Here are a few photos from that site.

It’s always good to have an area set aside to read and do some fun web surfing. This looks like a very comfy reading area. I would like to find an oversize chair like this one. (Both pictures below are found on decorology)

Since I have once again taken up knitting, I would love to knit this pillow and throw. I think it would go very well with the chair above. Since I don’t have that chair, I will just make it for the one that I do have.

I am not only into decorating and crafty things. I also love books. I wish I had more time to read. Maybe once I take my 4 month break I will find some time between organizing to read.

I came across a book today that I would like to add to my library. I love a book with a message. This book is Perseverance by Carolyn Rubenstein. Here is a little snippet of what the book is about.  “Imagine being in high school or college–enjoying the “best times of your life” –when you’re told you have cancer. Perseverance tells the gripping, first-person accounts of twenty such young people who persevered with an incredible sense of purpose and strength, while reminding everyone that now is everything.”

I think that a lot of times we lose sight of what’s important. I hear a lot of people say that “life is too short” and we must “live each day like it’s our last”, but how many of us actually do that? I know I don’t. When someone passes, I find myself saying how short life is, and how I need to live each day to the fullest. But, eventually the shock wears off and I am back to just existing. I think it’s time for me to actually live my life to the fullest. It should not have to take a potentially fatal illness to help us see that we should value each day. I hope you all will join me in living your life like it’s Golden.

Evolution Two – week twelve

Hello Folks,

 Recently I found out that a friend of mine has cancer. This is a huge shock to me, because she takes pretty good care of herself…doesn’t do the usual cancer causing activities like smoking or working for a nuclear plant. Alright, realistically I know that it can happen to anyone at any time regardless of how well they take care of themselves. It is a fact of life!

This feeling of  life being too short to sweat the small things reminds me of the book call Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse about Buddha. He tells the story of a young man who lives in a castle full of wealth and youth and what seems to be perfect happiness and immortality. The young man leaves the castle and discovers that there is sickness, old age and death and basically all kinds of suffering. Because of his discovery (this is my theory of course), he decides there must be more meaning to life than all that he was experiencing. He becomes a monk (essentially) at first to liberate himself from suffering, maybe hoping he could somehow transcend it and when he couldn’t really transcend it and realize it just was a part of life he becomes enlightened and discovers the middle way. Ok, so that is the very simplified version.

The point is that in the buddhist tradition there is a belief to hold death close to you. It sounds kind of morbid unless you turn it around and think of it as the preciousness of life. Today that is how I feel about my friend…how precious life is to realize that your body will  eventually no longer sustain you. I am imagining myself in that position and also realizing how important gratitude is in the scheme of things.

When I focus on my blog and fitness goals and remember how grateful I am that i can exercise and breath and eat and afford to feed myself, cloth myself, pay my bills…etc….it makes meeting my goals seem very easy.

 This is dedicated to my friend. I wish for her that she heals quickly and suffers very little.

I’ve never really been one for routine. I get bored quickly and I’ve always had too many things to do or people to see in too short a period of time to feel entirely comfortable committing to long set periods. The only major exceptions to that in recent years have been church and role-playing.

As my (as yet unconfirmed) departure date draws ever closer, naturally enough I find myself becoming increasingly aware of just how my life is going to change – by what order of magnitude.

Last Sunday was my last official gaming session. My character died. This was not unexpected. She died in a suitably heroic fasion, valient and worthy – and almost certainly helping to save the world.

The thing that’s struck me most about it is the way in which her ‘death’ has brought home to me the extent of what I’m doing. That’s not to say I decided to do this lightly – there was a lot of thought and prayer involved. I’ve been half-jokingly telling people that “I’m throwing my life up in the air and I’ll see where it comes down.” They laugh along with me and say things like “You do right.” (I live in Yorkshire remember.)

But I don’t think I’d really understood the cold hard truths of what I’m about to do. I really am walking out of a job, in a contracting sector in a hostile ecconomic climate. I really am upping sticks and moving 3,000 miles away from my family and all my friends, all the things, people and, dare I confess it, routines that I love, to live and work in a different culture. I really am only doing it for 12 months, just long enough to start to get a handle on it and then I’ll be coming ‘home’ again. And I really am doing it soon. Very soon.

Suddenly, for the first time ever I think, the thought of having nothing set in my diary is a little daunting…

I’m more excited than I am aprehensive (although the thought of all the paperwork and packing I have to do before I go is scary!). I don’t know how often in life one is aware of standing on the edge of a turning point, but from where I’m standing it’s a pretty keen edge. My future is what I make it. I’ve come to this point through a succession of decisions – big and small. Looking back I can see the chain, looking forward I can see potential new paths, almost laying down at the speed of thought. It’s exciting. It’s how I know I’m living my life, rather than just getting through it.

So what about you? Are you living your life?

How many times could one person possible hear this phrase during his lifetime? My guess would be that the average answer to that question is a hundred times or more. But regardless of the answers to that, the simple fact still remains: that a person only has one lifetime, and he better make the most of it.

The arrival of the Internet was just the thing to make people one step closer to doing just that. With the Net, countless possibilities arose not only for individuals, but for entire communities and industries as well. The internet improved life in a way no person a generation ago ever expected. It brought about changes to almost, if not all, aspects of everyday living.

When you think of it, all of these developments seem to have happened because of one naturally occurring, ever-needed aspect of life: communicating. People are social animals. We need to communicate to other persons to make our life complete; to make our life worth living. With the internet, communication has never been this easier and more convenient.

Gone were the days when people only sat on their couches, weirdly staring at the television hours at a time, eating something, and never talking to anything but their consciousness. Through the internet, those people can still watch their favorite shows, but this time, they have the capability to share their musings and rantings to every other enthusiast online. If they did not like what they have seen, they are just one comment away from reaching other concerned viewers and the program’s producers.

Gone were the days when people were constrained to limited choices. With the net, people can browse through thousands of entries of whatever they may think of, and see/get what they want almost every time. Needing a job? Finding a partner-in-life? Looking for that limited edition candy wrapper? Everything is in the Internet, it’s just a matter of finding it. Heck, a person looking for something may even pass out before having to check all possible choices. Also, it does not require for someone to be ‘looking for something.’ Questions, curiosities, and learning a thing or two can always be provided for through the web.

Gone were the days when organizations relied too heavily on papers and personal meetings. Nowadays, something is better off as “e-something.” Why pay for airline tickets when Mr. CEO and Mr. President can meet online? Why use up reams of paper when the Finance department can forward its annual report to every employee through the web? Cost-cutting became this much effortless with the help of the internet. And I strongly believe saving money is not restricted to offices and industries.

Simply put, gone were the days when people may find it hard to communicate. Friends, families, lovers, activity partners, and everyone can talk to each other online. Even advertisers and merchandisers took advantage of the market opportunity in the Net. (Anyone who is reading this probably had seen a couple or so annoying and not-so-annoying ads before reaching this page.) With the coming of the World Wide Web, life just became a major hop easier, faster, and better.

If there is one thing that can be done for both life and the Internet, it probably is this: “make the most of it.“

I had been reading several online articles about the death of Farrah Fawcett when I came across a story about the demise of yet another prominent person – Michael Jackson.

Like the rest of the world, I was really stunned by these events.

But more than that, Fawcett and Jackson also reminded me of how short life is, and that no one is spared from death: rich or poor, famous or unknown, powerful or powerless… all of us will leave the world someday.

So while I’m here, I will strive harder to be the best person that I can be. Life is too short and too precious to be wasted on petty things.

These words from the “King of Pop” himself are a good reminder:

So, here we are – blog post number three. Sorry about the delay. I suppose it’s time I started writing about what I’m actually doing!

As you know if you’ve read my About section, I’m about to start  a year of voluntary work in Botswana. To fund the year I need to raise about £3,000 (at least, this is the guide amount I’ve been given). It’s challenge, but not an impossible one. I just need to start doing things for it!

So, I’ve come up with a few ideas on how I’m going to raise the money. The first one I’m going to share with you is this.

I will dye my hair blue for one month.

I have quite a lot of hair – it’s nearly waist length and tends to have a mind of it’s own, so this should make quite a statement, and I hope it will help me start a few conversations. 

Here are a couple of pictures of me with it as it is now.

I’ve bought the dye, and I’m going to do it tomorrow (which by now is later on today). I’ll let you know how it goes!

Saya akui setelah sekian lama meninggalkan dunia kampus, rasanya mati inspirasi. Itu juga yang saya jadikan alasan untuk teman saya bahwa saya sedang mati inspirasi, tidak banyak bergaul dengan dunia luar, sehari-hari hanya di kantor, bertatap muka dengan layar monitor kemudian memulai pekerjaan atau sekedar browsing, bahkan sekedar baca bukupun membutuhkan waktu yang cukup lama untuk selesai.

Padahal, bagi saya pribadi, menulis merupakan salah satu hal yang sangat penting untuk lebih maju, dalam artian menulis bisa saya manfaatkan untuk belajar, untuk mengevaluasi sesuatu, untuk sharing info, untuk melepaskan kejenuhan-kejenuhan rutinitas dan lain sebagainya.

Selain itu, dari informasi yang saya dapatkan, menulis juga mampu meringankan gejala asma dan rheumatoid arthritis, bisa membuat kita menjadi layaknya pakar pada sebuah keahlian , dan banyak manfaat lainnya, bisa anda lihat pada links berikut ini.

Everything has to start somewhere (according to a certain school of thought at least), and that includes this blog.

I’ve had it registered for a while now, but held off publishing anything until it was ‘right.’ Which means I have a few half finished blog entries, a banner that I don’t like enough to share, and a message that’s going no further than the My Documents folder on my laptop. Not really the way to communicate with the world now is it!

I do this with a lot of things in my life, and I know I’m not the only one. We sit and wait, with great intentions, planning in great detail the things we’re going to do one day. But life is short, too short for ‘one day’. It’s the lesson I’ve been learning for a while now and the reason I’m about to throw my life up in the air and probably change it forever by working as a volunteer in Botswana for twelve months.

I’ve been saying I’ll do it for years now, “One day, I’m going to go back to Botswana. One day, I’d love to work in Africa.” But I’ve realised that if I don’t do it now, I probably never will. It doesn’t matter what you mean to do in life, what you plan to do. What matters is what you do – how you live your life, the person you are, the lives you touch, the connections you make. Life is too short for “one day…” and “in time…”

The time we have is here and now. That’s what we have to work with. Certainly, plan for the future, put aside savings if you can, make goals, but never loose sight of the fact that today may be all that you get. Life happens and death happens, and if something major were to happen tonight what would you wish you had done today? 

So, here’s my blog, in all its unfinished, nowhere near perfected glory. It’ll get better. I’ll put a banner on it (one day), but for now at least I’ve started it. And the fact that you’re reading it means I’ve done something today – right?

As both the completion of my newest feature, FRIENDS (WITH BENEFITS) …and the start of its film festival run nears, I thought now would be a good time to turn the main subject of this blog over to the making of my newest film.

March 28 – In Eternity Now

Heirs of God. Joint heirs with Me of Eternal Life, if so be that you suffer with Me, that we may also be glorified together.

Glory denotes perfection of character. This can only be learned as you allow discipline to play its part in your life, and also as you entrust your sinful past to Me.

Perfect through suffering. You cannot escape discipline and be truly My disciple.

If you think that life is too short for all you have to do and to conquer, then remember that you have already entered upon ETERNITY.
