A day or two ago I noticed that I’ve been having problems getting Evolution opened due to a glitch in the RSS plugin that also affects Liferea and my affect other RSS readers. You know you are affected by this bug when you launch your RSS reader in the terminal and see an error that says something like

symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libwebkit-1.0.so.2: undefined symbol: soup_content_decoder_get_type

I found a thread on the Ubuntu Forums that has a great fix for this bugger. It turns out something happened withe the WebKit Team PPA and they have to do a major upgrade. The short form answer is that you should open Symantic and do a search for libsoup. Look for libsoup2.4-1 and libsoup-gnome2.4-1, then select each package one at a time and use Package > Force Version to select these versions:

• libsoup2.4-1_2.28.2-1~kkwkt1
• libsoup-gnome2.4-1_2.28.2-1~kkwkt1

Apply the changes and you should be able to open your app. Please do not accept upgrades for these packages until you see an updated package that’s newer than today (the best place to see that info is to check the PPA link I posted above and check for a published date that’s later than today).

The Evo bug is one I’ve been dealing with for a few days, but after getting the daily updates I was found that Chromium flat won’t run anymore.  Not even Epiphany would run anymore so I had to fire up Firefox to find a bug report. I found Issue 31809: chromium does not start: Inconsistency detected by ld.so. Comment 17 has a fix for us.

Please stop confirming. We have enough info to show that it’s reproducible on a bunch of different ubuntu distros so it’s not something else. the bug is definitely in chromium (or in the way it is built in ubuntu). The error message seems to indicate
something about memory corruption.

In the meantime, you can downgrade to yesterday’s version, or shift to one of the other channels/PPAs:

fta’s comment about not needing to confirm it anymore is because most of the previous comments were “me too” comments. I added the first PPA (the “dev” one) and was able to roll back Chromium to a version that works (version 4.0.266.0 (Developer Build 33992)).

I need to run to the grocery store before the place gets too crazy but I wanted to make sure I had the fixes for these two issues posted before I run out the door.

Updated 9 January 8:15am: I just saw a comment on the Chromium bug that I wanted to pass along.

malloc overrides have been reenabled in r35823, using a different method.

Ubuntu folks: tomorrow’s PPA will not have any malloc overrides and the next day’s will have the new set. Hopefully that will be enough to disambiguate any issues.

At some point, bugdroid will wake up and spam this bug will all the change records

In other words if you’re running Ubuntu don’t take the update today (Saturday), wait until Sunday’s update is available. And before you accept the update pop over to the bug report and see if there’s a confirmation that the bug is fixed for us. I’ll update this post again when I have confirmation that the daily build runs on Ubuntu again. Big thanks to agl for fixing the bug and for making sure Ubuntu users have the status information we need for running this great browser.

Updated 10 January 9:35am: I am very happy to say that the Chromium Daily PPA once again has packages that can be used by users of Ubuntu 9.10. Open your Software Sources (Applications > System > Administration > Software Sources), go to the Other Software tab, and make sure the only Chromium PPA enabled is the PPA for Ubuntu Chromium – Daily Builds (http://ppa.launchpad.net/chromium-daily/ppa/ubuntu) or a similar source for your system. The PPA should not be the dev or beta source I listed in my original post. Then update your package information with sudo apt-get update and you should see that there are updates available for chromium-browser. As the screenshot on the right shows the version you want to take to is 4.0.295.0~svn20100110r35882-0ubuntu1~ucd1~karmic, specifically looking for “r35882″. Install the updates, close Chromium, and when you relaunch Chromium you should be able to go to about:version and see something like this:

If you can’t launch Chromium after installing version 4.0.295.0~svn20100110r35882-0ubuntu1~ucd1~karmic than I think it’s safe to say that either you didn’t get the proper version or you have a glitch in your old install. Go ahead and remove, but not purge, Chromium with sudo apt-get remove chromium-browser and then reinstall it (sudo apt-get install chromium-browser). That should get your system able to launch Chromium again.

[Updated to include some great news on the evolution-rss bug. -Peng]

The Ubuntu devs released the beta of Ubuntu 9.10 “Karmic Koala” back on the first of the month (now available as a Release Candidate), and while I snagged the disk image pretty quickly it wasn’t until Friday a week ago that I was able to actually get a chance to fire up the LiveCD long enough to see how well it played with my system. I couldn’t find any major glitches in it other than a problem with my USB WiFi adapter, and I had already seen that people were having enough major issues with the combination that there was a request to change the status on the support for the adapter from some support to absolutely no support. Luckily I was already having enough connectivity issues with our Linksys WiFi router that I has already gone back to using the good, old-fashioned CAT 5 cable to connect to it.

After looking at a number of other items that are important to me I went to the page on the Ubuntu website about the 9.10 beta to check for any known issues that I needed to be aware of and decided it was an upgrade I could probably do safely. I ran command sudo do-release-upgrade -d with the Run Application (Alt-F2) tool, although you could also run it in the terminal, and waited the two hours plus while my system got upgraded. Your system may take the upgrade more quickly or more slowly than mine, but having done a clean installation for version 9.04 I decided I didn’t want to go through the hassle of having to reinstall every bloody app and tool I use this time around. I did notice a number of dbus errors during the upgrade and unfortunately I didn’t think to document what they were about. They may have had something to do with how long my upgrade took, but I hadn’t found any dbus issues connected with the upgrade so I have absolutely no clue what the errors should have told me.

Now that I’ve used and updating Karmic for just over a week I found some things that I want to point out, some good, some not so good.

Overall Thoughts

I kept seeing people say that the boot times for Ubuntu 9.10 are shorter and sure enough my boot time is shorter. Of course since the Ubuntu devs decided to switch from using Usplash for the initial boot splash to XSplash any Mac4Lin boot splashes would have been broken anyway (I never did get a Usplash working for Mac4Lin 1.0, much to may chagrin) but I have to say that I really do like the look of the new splash screens. The boot splash is a simple Ubuntu logo on a dark background, but I have to say the new XSplash is a thing of beauty. As you can see in a YouTube video posted on Softpedia’s article on the newly released Ubuntu 9.10 beta, it’s no longer a simple case of the Ubuntu logo and a progress bar. The Ubuntu logo is now suspended and lit by an overhead spotlight and the animated bar now scrolls up rather than going from left to right.

In addition, they’ve added the Ubuntu Software Center (USC) as a new tool for adding software to the usual collection of Synaptic and Add/Remove Software. When I first looked at it I thought, “So what? I can do the same thing with existing tools.” Except the UI for the USC makes it a lot handier than Add/Remove Software. You can either search for a specific app or browse through the library and when you find what you’re looking for you’re provided with a much nicer information screen complete with buttons to wither install the software as well as to go to the app’s website where you can get even more information. The information screen even lets you know the version that’s available, something that Add/Remove Software never had. Have software you installed from a Debian package (.deb)? The USC knows about the app (at least what the package told the system) and gives you a button to remove it. It may not always have the application’s icon, but that may be more of a limitation in the package itself. Yes, you can do all this via Synaptic, but not everyone’s all that comfortable with it.

The Good

For the most part I’m pretty happy with the upgrade. I won’t bore you with a ton of specifics or screenies (I’ll include a link to some screenshots I made at the end) but there are a few things that I noticed are definite improvements in the user experience for me. The first thing I noticed was a dialog that popped up on my first reboot after the upgrade was done. I knew my hard drives were getting a bit old in the tooth, but now I could see just how bad things are getting. I dismissed the dialog, but now when I boot up I get an icon in my notification area and when I click on it I get a helpful message. I can click on the message and get more information, and I know I need to replace that drive one of these days but now I know I need to do it sooner than later (picture). I can disable the message if I want, as I can for the warnings that I’m getting low on disk space on my partitions. Those warnings come up each boot, as well as when I’m working with videos and the available space gets too small. Yes, they can be a little annoying, but I haven’t decided to silence them just yet.

An even nicer improvement comes in the Update Manager. Now it lets you know the source for the particular updates, plus it flat-out gives you more information on the update, such as the version number. This is information that’s been missing from the Update Manager for as long as I’ve used Ubuntu.

Another small, yet a very nice set of improvements came in Evolution. The first is a better visual notification of new messages coming in. In the past when you fired up Evo you simply saw the folder names bold when you had unread messages, which is okay, unless you left some messages marked unread to follow-up on as I do. Now you’ll see that there’s a star on the folder that has brand new unread messages.

The other improvements come to those who use Evo as their RSS reader. Not only does Evo show the site icons for the folders with feeds where available (the other folders use the stock RSS feed icon), but on many sites you can now see the comments when you look at the article summaries. I’m not sure why they show up on some feeds and not others, but I have noticed that some feeds still show a count for the number of comments without actually showing the comments themselves. But it’s not all good news with Evo though.

There’s one more fan-damn-tastic improvement in Ubuntu 9.10 that I just discovered trying to get caught up on my RSS feeds: It’s a piece of baklava to enable using Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to force a new X session. Just go to System > Preferences > Keyboard > Layouts > Layout Options. Then select Key Sequence to kill the X server and check Control + Alt + Backspace. That’s all it takes. The Not So Good

First off all let me warn you about a potential deal breaker in the updated Evolution. If you’re like me and you use Evo for your RSS/ATOM feed reader you won’t want to grab the new Evo. The reason for this warning is the fact that for some unknown (to me) reason the evolution-rss plugin no longer works and no feeds are updated (filed as Bug #460462 with fixed link). Luckily you can export your feed list (Edit > Preferences > News and Blogs > Export) so you can migrate your subscribed feeds to another app like Liferea and hopefully not miss too many days’ posts. There’s also an advantage that Liferea has over Evolution’s RSS plugin: You can sort and rename your feed folders to your heart’s content without borking the feed settings, something that you can’t say about evolution-rss. Updated 26 October 4:00 pm: Thanks to some very quick work by Andrew Starr-Bochicchio the evolution-rss bug is already fixed. There’s a .deb package on comment #6 on the bug, or you can wait for it to be available through the Update Manager as it’s already been accepted for distribution.

There are more upgrades in Ubuntu 9.10 that aren’t such good news, and one that sticks out like a sore thumb on my system is the GNOME web browser, Epiphany. As I mentioned back in December I finally got tired of the decisions Firefox devs were making and switched to using Epiphany for my web surfing. There were two flavors of Epiphany, one using the Mozilla Gecko rendering engine and one using Webkit, but the Webkit version didn’t quite seem ready for prime time so I was using the Gecko version. It was great that I had the option and it allowed me the option of using a Gecko-based browser without dealing with what I thought were boneheaded UI decisions from Firefox devs. Unfortunately the Epiphany devs have stopped supporting the Gecko engine and since with the release of Epiphany 2.26.3 Epiphany/Gecko no longer exists, Epiphany/Gecko is simply not available in Ubuntu 9.10. You may think that’s not a big problem, except there are some basic behavior issues that no longer available.

There’s finally a semi-usable spell checker in Epiphany now. I saw semi-usable because if I select a correct spelling the misspelled word is deleted but not replaced with the correct spelling (filed as Bug #460450).

The biggest issue is that you can no longer right-click a link and select Open in New Tab from the context menu. You also can’t middle-click a link on every site and open it in a new tab, especially when the links are on a Google site like Gmail.

Another serious usability issue for me is that the extensions that I used don’t seem to work quite properly anymore. The biggest issue for me is the fact that my beloved New Blank Tab extension no longer seems to be working. I’m hoping someone will come along and fix it because while the Tab Foreground extension works it doesn’t let me open a new tab and go straight to the location bar so I can type (or paste) in a URI. This is a rather big pain in the arse, although not quite as big as the no middle-click issue.

Wallpaper Tray is another app that has broken in the upgrade. For some reason it flat out won’t launch on booting for some reason. I ended up switching to Desktop Drapes, which is a nice app that I can put right on my upper panel, but doesn’t have the hover feature of showing the path and filename for the current wallpaper like Wallpaper Tray does. Hopefully we can get that fixed before too long.

On the Whole

One the whole there are some nice benefits to the upgrade, as long as you don’t depend on the features I mentioned above. As I finally finish this post we have a mere four days before Ubuntu 9.10 “Karmic Koala” is released, now may be a great time to snag the ISO for the Release Candidate and try it out on your own system. Remember, try the LiveCD before you make the upgrade, and look at every app that you use now to make sure the upgrade won’t bring bad news as I found. make sure you also read the overview before you make the upgrade for more information on what’s coming in the upgrade as well as the known issues.

Record de fréquentation hier — je ne précise pas à combien histoire de ne pas avoir l’air ridicule — pour mon web-log alors que je n’ai pas posté depuis plus d’une semaine. Bon, le titre est explicite. Je teste la beta de la dernière version d’Ubuntu. (En tant que système d’exploitation principal. Oui, il y a en qui n’ont peur de rien… Ne reproduisez pas ça chez vous.)

Au fait, je ne maitrise pas encore la mise en page sous wordpress, donc ce sera un pavé indigeste. Désolé.

Niveau installation, peu de différence. L’ext4 proposé par défaut. Une option en plus : protéger le /home/user par mot de passe. (ne paniquez pas si l’installation « bloque » vers 90 %, c’est normal. Ça dure presque 1/3 du temps d’installation total)
Plus visible, on a enfin des explications sur les logiciels présents pour patienter pendant l’installation. Bon, ça demande à être un peu développé. (à 57 %, on passe à une explication, importante il est vrai, sur les méthodes à utiliser pour trouver de l’aide. N’empêche que passer presque la moitié de l’installation sur un seul écran est moyennement passionnant)

J’apprécie beaucoup l’esthétique du thème gdm.

Même si ça se voit mal sur mes captures d’écran réalisés sous VirtualBox, on a en bas des listes déroulantes qui permettent de choisir la langue, le clavier et l’environnement de bureau. C’est très pratique. (et, avec une résolution d’écran normale, ce n’est pas à la ramasse comme sur mes captures d’écran)

Un piège à noter pour ceux qui n’utilisent pas l’azerty : lors de la première connexion, c’est le clavier par défaut si vous avez installé le système en français. Même vous avez sélectionné le bépo lors de l’installation.
(vous vous en rendrez compte très facilement lorsque gdm refusera votre mot de passe  )

Passons au Bureau :

Oh les salauds ! Ils ont plagié Ubuntu !
Bon, sérieusement, quasi pas de différence avec la version antérieure. (oui, ils ont changé le fond d’écran) D’ailleurs, elles sont quasi toutes visibles sur cette capture d’écran.
En vrac :
— les icônes de notification se sont MacOSisées (je ne suis pas fan) ;
— l’indicateur de session affiche l’identifiant au lieu du nom complet de la personne connectée (c’est peut-être plus logique, mais je ne suis pas fan non plus : une option pour choisir aurait été bienvenue) ;
— Empathy remplace Pidgin. J’en reparlerai d’ici un mois, parce qu’aucun des deux ne marche à 100 % pour l’instant ;
— Ubuntu One apparait. On ne peut pas encore l’utiliser, j’en parlerai aussi quand on pourra s’inscrire ;
— last but not least, « Logithèque Ubuntu » remplace « Ajouter/supprimer des applications ».

Bonne nouvelle, on a des icônes différenciées pour les différents dossiers de documents.

On retrouve notre bon vieux « Ajouter/supprimer des applications » exilé dans la partie administration, malgré ses bons et loyaux services pendant plusieurs années.
Enfin, je dis ça, mais je ne l’utilisais quasiment plus. J’en étais à la louche à 50 % Synaptic, 49 % ligne de commande et 1 % A/sa… (contre 100 % A/sa à mes débuts  )

Enfin ! Nous n’avons plus que les pilotes graphiques ATI et nVidia comme logiciels privateurs — ou logiciels sous licence d’utilisation/étude/diffusion/modification restreinte pour faire plus simple — installés par défaut. Pour mesurer le chemin parcouru, il faut signaler que le jeu d’icônes par défaut était non-libre il y a six mois… Et avec le pilote libre radeonHD qui va arriver, on va encore avancer. :p

Abordons le changement majeur de Karmic Koala : le Software « ex-Store » Center.

Page d’accueil fonctionnelle. Pas grand chose à dire.

Là, ça se complique, on ne peut plus cocher les applications qu’on veut installer.

Je pense que c’est là le but du Software Center : avoir une page moins « rugueuse » que l’ancien « Ajouter/supprimer des applications ». C’est réussi, quoique garder les étoiles de popularité et les logotypes — soutenu par Canonical, conçu pour GNOME, conçu pour KDE, etc. — aurait été une bonne chose.

Bon, ça, ça ne défrise personne…

Gestionnaire de téléchargement basique. Mais facile à lire et à comprendre.

Là, ce n’est pas pratique. Il n’y a AUCUN moyen de ranger les logiciels installés pour faire ressortir quoi que ce soit. À améliorer impérativement.

Rien à signaler.

Au final :
points positifs :
— séparation des logiciels installés et non-installés ;
— les fiches des logiciels, beaucoup plus agréable à lire que sous « Ajouter/supprimer des applications » ;
— la visualisation les chargements en cours dans un onglet dédié, et la possibilité de les arrêter en cas de changement d’avis ;

points à améliorer et/ou changer avant Lucid Lynx :
— remettre la possibilité de sélectionner plusieurs logiciels à installer en même temps, ne serait-ce qu’en option, serait sympathique ;
— remettre le classement par étoiles ;
— remettre les logotypes d’aide (soutenu par Canonical, conçu pour GNOME, etc.) ;
— catégoriser les logiciels installés comme le sont les logiciels non-installés. Et rajouter une catégorie « tout ». Permettre un rangement anti-alphabétique et un rangement par popularité.

Au final, on a une application plus accessible aux débutants, notamment ceux qui entrent dans l’informatique par la fenêtre, mais pour l’instant moins fonctionnelle. Je pense qu’il n’est pas impossible de rejoindre rapidement le niveau de fonctionnalité de « Ajouter/supprimer des applications » sans perdre de l’accessibilité gagnée, donc je suis globalement content de l’arrivée de ce logiciel.
On pourra signaler que les prix des logiciels sont affichés. (tous gratuit, pour l’instant)
Si ça pouvait servir, en plus de proposer des services payants, — Canonical Ltd. a, comme toute entreprise, et ce n’est pas honteux, vocation à gagner de l’argent à long terme — à faire des dons aux auteurs des logiciels libres, ce serait une très bonne chose.

Autre nouveauté : Firefox 3.5.

(avec Firefox 3.0.*, on sentait bien les 15 mois qui étaient passés)
Bon, pas grand chose d’autre à dire. Il n’en est qu’encore plus mon fureteur principal. (j’ai développé une assuétude à ma version optimisée à grand renfort d’extensions)

À noter que Liferea — agrégateur de flux de syndication — aussi va bien plus vite, ce qui fait que le passage de Jaunty à Karmic est très agréable pour la partie surf.
[edit : la lenteur de Liferea sous Jaunty était dû à un bug entre la base de donnée et l’ext4]

Oui, je rajoute des jeux non-libres. (pas bien) Sinon, je me demande pourquoi XMind est considéré non-libre. (il est pourtant sous double licence EPL/LGPL)
Aucun rapport, on remarquera que l’indicateur de session n’aime plus être placé sur une barre verticale. (c’est dommage)

Globalement, le système est stable. (4~6 crashes les 2~3 premiers jours, mais rien de notable. Rien depuis, pourvu que ça dure…)
[Edit] Je voulais en parler, mais j’ai oublié au moment de rédiger l’article. Out of the Box, la gestion du temps n’est pas correcte sur mon ordi, donc je devais attendre deux heures après un arrêt d’Ubuntu pour pouvoir y ré-accéder. (le problème ne se pose plus une fois les mises à jour faites)

(ce qui NE veut PAS dire qu’il est conseillé de l’installer chez soi si on a pas un minimum d’expérience. C’est d’autant plus vrai que les traductions n’ont pas encore été publiées…)

Firefox and Liferea both use SQLite as their database-backend. You might try out running…

If you run a desktop PC, you might want do do this parallelized to your boot-up, so on Archlinux I did the following:

• copy both code snippets in separate scripts, in my case ~/bash/speedup/(firefox|liferea) and give them executable rights
• write something like that (don’t forget to replace the username!) in your /etc/rc.local:

su yourusername -c ~/bash/speedup/liferea &

Hace un tiempo atrás les había hablado de Liferea, un lector de noticias para Linux que permite organizar de manera sencilla los feeds de tus páginas web favoritas. Para instalarlo lo que tenemos que hacer es abrir una terminal y añadir lo siguiente:
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/liferea/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list" && sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 412F055D
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/webkit-team/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list" && sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 2D9A3C5B
Actualizamos e instalamos Liferea con sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install liferea. Si ya lo tenemos instalado, escribe sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade.

Uno de los detalles que descubrí cuando abrí Liferea es la mejora imporante de la velocidad, tanto de carga como de proceso de información. Si quieres ver lo nuevo que trae esta versión puedes revisarlo en Gnome Files

Ich bin noch immer nicht sicher, warum ich dieses Bild für veröffentlichungswert halte. Hier ein paar vorläufige Thesen:

Estoy preocupado este domingo che. No es para menos, la segunda tanda de mates viene saliendo bastante más fea que la primera y a mí el mate me comunica el estado de las cosas en el universo.
Los santafesinos no somos tipos supersticiosos, no vaya a creer, nada de que si andás con el “asunto” se te corta la mayonesa o cosas por el estilo, pero el mate es otro tema. Es prácticamente una herramienta chamánica heredada.
No tendremos Gualichos por estos días, pero un mate bien compartido nos puede conseguir gratas compañías.
Estando así de preocupado por el mal augurio yerbero, preferí hacer huevo en casa, y acotar las probables desgracias a la categoría de accidentes del hogar.
A recorrer feeds me dediqué, una actividad que me suele dar grandes satisfacciones, hasta que en un momento determinado sufrí la inclemencia de un corte de servicio de parte de mi ISP.
No es que haya sido una tragedia (de hecho no duró más de cinco minutos), pero ahí me di cuenta que en esta parte del globo, a la web 2.0 te la pueden prender y apagar cuando quieran, y esto puede complicarnos el acceso a los servicios que usamos a diario de manera transparente.
En mi caso, una de las herramientas que más utilizo es Google Reader. Pero si al momento de querer revisar mis feeds no dispongo de conexión a internet, no podré acceder al servicio.
Decidí luego de semejantes premoniciones, instalar un feeds reader local para contar con el material de lectura descargado, aún en esos momentos en que no tengo acceso a la web.

Luego de modificar nuestro sources.list y antes de actualizar la lista de paquetes, deberemos importar las claves correspondientes:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 412F055D && sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 2D9A3C5B

Ahora actualizamos la lista de paquetes:

sudo apt-get update

Y procedemos con la complicadísima instalación de liferea ejecutando los siguientes tortuosos e interminables pasos:

sudo apt-get install liferea

Listo.
Liferea cuenta con una serie de feeds precargados que no están mal, pero yo quería agregar los míos, los que tengo en Google Reader. Entonces me remití al blog de Nicoman, donde había visto algo al respecto.
No es para nada complicado.
Habiendo ingresado en nuestra cuenta de G-Reader, basta con dirigirse a “Administrar Suscripciones”, y en la pestaña “Importar/Exportar” seleccionamos “Exportar tus suscripciones como archivo OPML”. Esto último nos descarga un archivo xml llamado google-reader-subscriptions.

Internet es un sitio donde no para de emanar información. A veces se nos hace difícil mostrar y separar lo realmente interesante, sin que por ello nos perdamos leyendo varios sitios, perdamos tiempo y orientación abriendo ventanas o pestañas en el navegador. Otras veces agregar sitios en forma de marcadores dinámicos se hace ya pesado si estamos sindicados a varios sitios (botón naranja situado en la barra de navegación) al tener varios sitios cargando sus “feeds” en nuestro navegador, puede suponer un lastre importante para el navegador y para una navegación más fluida. Para aligerar el navegador de este posible inconveniente existen algunos métodos:

-Utilizar un sitio de sindicación de noticias on-line (Netvibes, Google Reader, iGoogle, Bloglines…)

-Utilizar un programa de sindicación de noticias como Akregator o Liferea. En este caso nos centraremos en Liferea que es un administrador de noticias para GTK+

En Ubuntu ya disponemos de la versión 1.4.0 de Liferea lista para instalar, pero si queremos instalar la última versión que es la 1.6.0, seguiremos los pasos que nos indican en Web Upd8. Así pues abrimos la terminal y ponemos las siguientes líneas que incluyen el agregado de los repositorios al sources.list (con lo que se actualizará el programa) y las llaves correspondientes:

sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/liferea/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list" && sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 412F055D
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/webkit-team/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list" && sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 2D9A3C5B

Actualizamos los repositorios e instalamos Liferea.
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install liferea

Actualizamos para ver si hay alguna actualización de la versión:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
Ahora ya podemos acceder al programa y  administrar fácilmente los canales de noticias. En la barra de herramientas de Gnome, nos aparecerá un globo terráqueo que al posicionar el puntero nos mostrará el número total de titulares. Si hacemos clic sobre el nos abrirá Liferea con nuestra configuración de noticias.

Tal vez nos sea más cómodo añadirlos desde algún navegador,  como por ejemplo Firefox, del que ya hablé de cómo sindicarse a un sitio on-line. Para ello nos vamos a la barra de herramientas, hacemos clic en Editar–> Preferencias–> Programas–> Contenidos web –> en el desplegable elegimos “Usar otro” para dejar Liferea como predefinido, o “Preguntar siempre” si queremos que Firefox nos pregunte en qué sitio dejar la sindicación de la web generadora de feeds, después de que previamente pulsasemos el icono naranja de la barra de navegación.

Si elegimos a Liferea como programa predefinido (opción “Usar otro”) debemos poner la ruta /usr/bin/liferea-add-feed . Tal y como viene en la captura:

Si elegimos “Preguntar siempre” Firefox nos mostrará una página con los titulares,  ya nosotros debemos decidir dónde situarlos.

Liferea (abreviatura del inglés Linux Feed Reader, Lector de Feeds de Linux) es un agregador de noticias para nuevos feeds en línea. Es compatible con la mayoría de formatos de feeds, incluyendo RSS, RDF y Atom y permite importar y exportar listas de suscripción en formato OPML. Liferea intenta ser un agregador rápido, fácil de usar y fácil de instalar para GTK+, lo que permite usarlo con el entorno de escritorio GNOME.

Perfecto para los amantes de los blogs, este programa es realmente útil para estar siempre al día de las actualizaciones de las webs. La interfaz es muy sencilla, similar a la de Thunderbird. Pero si uso este programa y no otro (hay muchos) es por su buena integración con el escritorio Gnome. Se minimiza en el area de notificación y te avisa con una ventana emergente cuando hay nuevas entradas. Además si usas Ubuntu es compatible con el nuevo sistema de notificaciones.

Características

• Es software libre, de código abierto y gratuito. Está publicado bajo la licencia GPL.
• Implementa las librerías gráficas GTK+ para mostrar los controles de la interfaz, por lo tanto se integra con los escritorios GNOME y Xfce.
• Es compatible con feeds en formato RSS, RDF y Atom.
• Permite importar y exportar listas de suscripción en formato OPML
• Permite usar carpetas para organizar las fuentes.

su -c ‘yum install liferea’

Si hemos instalado Liferea en Ubuntu 9.04 sobre una partición ext4, notaremos como su ejecución es lentísima y el uso del disco duro constante, incluso veremos casi todo el tiempo la ventana gris mientras se actualizan los canales. En definitiva, Liferea sobre ext4 va fatal. Y lo peor es que, al parecer, no se va a solucionar de manera oficial hasta la versión 1.8.

Por lo tanto, si quieres seguir usando Liferea y mantener tu sistema de archivos en ext4 quizá te convendría probar la siguiente solución.

Antes de leer cuál es la solución tal vez deberías saber que este arreglo hace que Liferea se vuelva un poco más frágil porque la solución consiste en no hacer nada al llamar a la función fsync().

Los pasos a seguir desde un Terminal son los siguientes:

1. Nos situamos en el directorio /usr/src:

   cd /usr/src

2. Creamos un directorio con el nombre libfsync:

   sudo mkdir libfsync

3. Nos situamos en el nuevo directorio (libfsync):

   cd libfsync

4. Creamos un fichero de texto con el nombre libfsync.c

   sudo nano libfsync.c

   con el siguiente contenido:

   int fsync (int fd) {
return 0;
}

5. Ejecutamos el siguiente comando para compilar el archivo anterior:

   sudo gcc -Wall libfsync.c -o libfsync.so -shared -fPIC -Wl,-soname,libfsync.so

6. Editamos el archivo /usr/bin/liferea con el comando

   sudo nano /usr/bin/liferea

   y añadimos en la segunda línea el siguiente texto:

   export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/src/libfsync/libfsync.so

Y con esto ya podemos usar Liferea sin que muera nuestro disco duro en el intento.

I just want to write down, that I am using Liferea which is a great RSS-Feedreader. You can do so many things like view comments on supported blogs (eg all wordpress based ones) or display feeds which only contain one or two sentences instead of the full article directly in the frame where you read it. It works only with Linux, although I use it on windows (I boot that one mainly for gaming) with CoLinux, too.

PS: I think Feed-Readers are very important to catch up with politics (everyone should do that to have a working democracy).

Muchas cosas ve uno a lo largo del día. La mayoría pasan desapercibidas. De las que nos damos cuenta, no les prestamos atención a gran parte de ellas, y del resto no sabemos apreciar casi ninguna…

Hoy vengo a hablar de algo que pienso defender a capa y espada. Hace algún tiempo, escribí un post sobre un extraño temor a apreder cosas nuevas. A dia de hoy admito que me cuesta entrar por el aro en muchas cosas, y de hecho en determinados casos lo hago incluso a drede. Resulta que hace unos día lei un post en Genciencia, uno de los blogs que tengo en mi Liferea, que me llamó muchísimo la antención.Este post del que os hablo venía a defender una postura que yo ya mantenía desde hace tiempo. Realmente al hablar las cosas se avanza sobre ellas, y ha sido esta mañana cuando, hablando con un amigo, he llegado a la conclusión de que, si se dividiese el saber en las dos grandes ramas de letras y números puros, los umbrales para considerar una persona culta, estarían a distinta altura.

Yo mantengo que en España los sabios de las ciencias están totalmente infravalorados, mientras que los sabios de las letras se encuentran sobrevalorados. A la sociedad española les vale que un periodista les hable del LHC, es algo que está bien visto. Sin embargo, si van a hablar de un tema científico tan avanzado como es el tema de física de partículas, debería ser inadmisible que las opiniones al respecto únicamente viniesen de gente experta en el tema, y no, no me vale un periodista experto en ese tema.

Quizás sea demasiado crítico, pero yo, por mucho que me ponga a leer y a aprender sobre valores del se, ambiguedades sobre el lenguaje o cualquier otra temática propia de discusión entre entendidos de la lengua no me atrevería jamas a dar mi punto de vista al respecto como voz entendida en el asunto con capacidad de informar. Aquí veo claramente que la ignorancia es atrevida.

Ya es hora de que a los científicos se les trate como se lo merecen. Me llegan noticias de que en países como Alemania o en Estados Unidos los científicos son gente reconocida, tal y como aquí lo serían un buen escritor, un gran hombre de negocios o un periodista de renombre. Esto me da una idea de las ideas que nuestra sociedad tiene. Muy típico eso de:

-Oye, ¿tú qué estudiabas?

-Física.

-¡Ah! Educación Física, ¿no?

-…

Y demás variantes con Física y Química, etc… que todos hemos tenido que escuchar alguna que otra vez.

Lo único que me consuela de todo esto es que al menos podemos sabernos más cultos que una buena mayoría de los considerados socialmente cultos. Estoy convencido de que la relación del conocimientos números/letras es mucho más próxima a la unidad en nosotros que en ellos. Aparte de que usamos más letras que ellos

Nell’ottica di una sempre migliore convergenza fra le mie varie home page, oggi ho dato un’occhiata a Google Reader e me ne sono subito innamorato, abbandonando il fido Liferea che aveva comunque svolto un ottimo lavoro fino a qui, ma che non poteva comunque competere con un prodotto online che mi permette di seguire da qualsiasi computer i miei feed RSS e di pubblicare i più interessanti contenuti sulla mia home page di Facebook con un solo click.

Così ho aggiornato il mio profilo pubblico su Google, aggiungendo tutti i social network a cui sono iscritto e ritoccando la sezione apposita nella colonna di questo blog.

Ein paar Schnellschüsse vor dem Schlafengehen, die ich noch unbedingt loswerden muss:

Durch ein scheinbar nicht ganz vollständiges Kernel-Update auf meinem eee-701 konnte ich nach einem Neustart die Tastatur nicht mehr verwenden. Nun gut, ich hatte eh vor easypeasy zu testen!
Mehr oder weniger in dem Glauben, dass es bei einem kurzen Testen bleiben wird, und danach wieder ein komplettes Ubuntu auf die Kiste wandert, schnell einen bootbaren USB-Stick mit UNetbootin erstellt und auf dem kleinen Netbook installiert… erste Verwunderung überkam mich, als ich gesehen habe, dass die SSD in ext3 formatiert wird. Aber egal, die werden schon wissen, was sie tun, immerhin ist easypeasy auf den eee-PC optimiert.
Die Oberfläche von easypeasy ist scheinbar das NBR (Netbook Remix) von Ubuntu, das sehr schon aussieht! Auf dem Desktop befinden sich die Orte und Favoriten auf der rechten Seite und Links findet sich das Gnome-Menü. Bei einem Klick auf die Einträge werden dann die Applikationen im Raum zwischen den Menüeinträgen und den Orten angezeigt. Sehr nett!

Alle Anwendungen werden im Fullscreen-Modus gestartet. Von offenen Applikationen werden nur die Icons in der Fensterleiste angezeigt, außer von dem Fenster, das aktuell den Fokus hat. Von dem wird der Name angezeigt! Sehr nett, so etwas wünschte ich manchmal (!) auch daheim auf dem Desktop-PC!
Natürlich habe ich einige Programme erstmal deinstalliert. Warum brauche ich auf einem Netbook einen

• Terminal-Server-Client
• Bildschirm-Leser
• Bittorrent-Client
• Songbird (ich mag Rhythmbox lieber q: )
• Openoffice.org-Impress
• Openoffice.org-Draw
• und noch andere…

Durch diverse Recherchen zu easypeasy bin ich per dummen Zufall über ein weiteres, nett aussehendes Ubuntu-Derivat gestolpert: CrunchLinux, welches wohl auch als CrunchEEE verfügbar ist. Beim Durchschauen der Anwendungsliste bin ich über Gwibber gestoßen, einen gtk-Microblogging-Client! Der kleine scheint ziemlich mächtig und unterstützt so einige Plattformen, u.a. Digg, Facebook oder Flickr. Wofür diese Protokolle nun nützlich sind, weiß ich nicht, aber auf jeden Fall hat er meinen bisherigen Twitter-Client Twitux abgelöst!
Zur Installation unter Ubuntu 8.10 muss man die entsprechenden PPAs in die sources.list eintragen:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/gwibber-team/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/gwibber-team/ubuntu intrepid main

Und schon kann man gwibber wie gewohnt installieren.
Achtung: Fremdquellen können das System beschädigen… Ihr kennt das ja sicherlich von Ubuntuusers.de, gell?

Und wenn wir schon mal bei Neuerungen sind, habe ich direkt mal Liferea daheim auf die aktuelle unstable 1.5.10 geupdatet! Komischerweise lief die 1.5.5 im Betrieb problemlos, ohne Abstürze, mit kleineren, verkraftbaren Macken. Gleiche Version hat zu hause unsagbare Probleme gemacht und ist eigentlich alle 5 Minuten abgestürzt. Darum einfach mal:

tar -xzvf liferea-1.5.10.tar.gz
cd liferea-1.5.10
sudo apt-get build-dep liferea
sudo apt-get install libwebkit-dev libcurl4-dev

und schon habe ich eine wesentlich stabilere Version von Liferea laufen, die Google-Reader-Unterstützung hat! Wofür ich das brauche, habe ich bereits beschrieben (;

Meiner Faulheit hat dann auch noch Christoph Langner Unterstützung gegeben:
Anstelle von ssh IP-DES-RECHNERS-IM-NETZWERK kann man auch ssh $HOSTNAME.local eingeben. Voraussetzung ist die Installation von libnss-mdns:

sudo apt-get install libnss-mdns

PS: Warum kann WP.org eigentlich nicht den small-Tag??

This particular problem of Firefox starting in Offline Mode is particularly because of a network unavailability problem. And is common when you have your NetworkManager turned on along with the network service. The bes possible workaround for this problem is you disable the NetworkManager service as this will also get you off from some other similar network problems such as Pidgin not logging in and staying on a status message mode – ‘Waiting for Network Connection’ and other Network consuming programs such as Lifrea – too starting in offline mode. You can disble NetworkManager service from starting by issuing the following commands in a terminal as root:

If you want NetworkManager to keep running then you could try this fix for Firefox instead, but then you won`t be able to get your Lifere and Pidgin programs running correctly!

1) Goto the about:config property editor of Firefox by typing the about:config and click on the next message that says something like “careful…..promise…..”.

2) In the filter, search for toolkit.networkmanager.disable and set it`s value to true and restart your Firefox browser, You`re done!

من همیشه از این گلایه می‌کردم که چرا Google رابط برنامه نویسی Google Readerش را منتشر نمی کنه (منظورم همون API هست). یه مدت بود که با این
Google Reader سر جنگ داشتم. سعی می‌کردم تا اونجایی که میتونم ازش دوری کنم و معتادش نشم. یه مدت از Bloglines استفاده می‌کردم و به دلیل سیاست بسیار خوبی که در زمینه‌ی API داشت از استفاده‌ی اون لذت می‌بردم.
به راحتی میتونستم با استفاده از نرم‌افزارهای third-party موجود به خوراک‌هام به صورت Offline دسترسی داشته باشم. اما از وقتی که به لینوک مهاجرت کردم با یک مشکل اساسی مواجه شدم و آن نبود نرم‌افزار مناسبی برای برای چک کردن خوراک‌هام بود. راستی یادم رفت بگم، تا زمانی که توی Windows بودم از GreateNews استفاده می‌کردم که امکانات بسیار خوبی برای Synchronize کردن خوراک‌ها با Bloglines داشت.

خلاصه از وقتی اومدم به دنیای زیبای GNU/Linux مجبور شدم از همون Google Reader قدرتمندی با امکانات قدرمتند اون در به اشتراک گذاری خوراک‌ها استفاده کنم. البته یک مدتی هم به سرم زده بود بشینم یک خوراک‌خوان اختصاصی برای Bloglines بنویسم.

یک مدت گذشت و ما هم با همین وضع کنار آمدیم تا اینکه چند روز پیش این خبر به گوشم خورد:

Niall Kennedy اخیرا جزيیات رابط برنامه‌نویسی Google Reader را به صورت غیر رسمی منتشر کرد. البته این API رسمی نمی‌باشد و توسط Google پشتیبانی نمی‌شود. نکته‌ی قابل توجه اینجاست که Kennedy اعلام کرده که او تصدیق‌نامه‌ای از Google به خاطر گزارش این API به صورت دقیق دریافت کرده.
همچنین Kennedy اعلام کرده که Jason Shellan، مدیر پروژه‌ی تیم Google Reader گفته که به زودی Google رابط برنامه‌نویسی Google Reader را به طور رسمی اعلام خواهد کرد.
واقعا جای تاسف هست که Google باید بعد از اینکه APIش توسط دیگران فاش بشه قبلا اون را به صورت رسمی منتشر نکرده. شاید این واقعه برای من به یک کابوس تبدیل شده بود. همیشه از اینکه google reader رابط برنامه‌نویسیش را اعلام نمی‌کرد در عذاب بودم.

از این پس باید شاهد تحول بسیار بزرگی در زمینه‌ی خوراک خوان های تحت و روی میزی در سال جدید باشیم. مطمئنا third-party های قدرتمندی در این زمینه به فعالیت می‌پردازند. از مزایای استفاده ازاین API در ساخت Feed Aggregatorها این هست که:

1. گوگل و تیم مهندسی آن و همچنین serverهای قدرتمند آن دارای توانایی بالایی در عملیات واکشی feed ها (parse) و همچنین دریافت فرم‌های متفاوت feed از جمله XML و RSS 1.0 , RSS 2.0 , Atom 0.3 , Atom 10 و … می‌باشد. عملیاتی چون validation خوراک ها نیز از معضلات موجود در سر راه برنامه نویسان می‌باشد که همگی این فرایند ها در google reader انجام می شود. و برنامه نویسان نیازی به تمرکز بر روی واکشی خوراک ها با فرمت های مختلف را ندارند زیرا این API تنها یک خروجی دارد.
2. کاهش هزینه‌ها در پهنای باند مصرفی: در استفاده از این API دیگر نیازی به بررسی کردن آدرس خوراک های مختلف را نداریم. علی الخصوص اینکه با هر بار بررسی آدرس خوراک‌ها تنها تعداد معدودی از خوراک ها به روز شده‌اند و در نتیجه مصرف پهنای باند کاربر به شدت پایین خواهد آمد.
3. استفاده از امکانات Web 2.0: همان طور که می‌دانید یکی از دلایل محبوبیت خوراک خوان Google Reader، امکانات اشتراکی آن می‌باشد. که باز هم می‌توان از طریق این API می‌توان به اقلام اشتراکی نیز دسترسی داشت.
4. بازدهی بیشتر در کامپیوتر‌های قدیمی: به علت استفاده‌ی شدید از JavaScript و تکنولوژی Ajax در این خوراک خوان. باعث سنگین شدن بیش از حد آن شده به طوری که عملا با استفاده‌ی منابع زیادی از سیستم باعث کند شدن فعالیت سیستم عامل می‌شود. اما در صورت استفاده از نرم‌افزارهای third-pary در کامپیوتر های قدیمی می‌توان از استفاده‌ی بیش از حد منابع سیستمی جلوگیری کرد.
5. طراحی خوراک‌خوان برای تلفن همراه: از این بعد می‌توان شاهد سیل عظیمی از نرم‌افزارهای خوراک خوان برای تلفن‌های همراه بود.
