Last week, as I was listening to Malcom Gladwell’s “Outliers” during my commute, this thought came to my mind…”

Well, there were good times and bad times. The grad school ended up taking all the profit, because they apparently were under the impression that I was “donating” the cupcakes.

That’s okay though, because Cakeybake cupcakes did end up selling out, within just an hour of setting up! So, success on the purchasing part, fail on the bank account!

Here are some pics of the baking and the ingredients I used.

I like to use brown cage free eggs because I personally feel like they taste better. They are a tiny bit more expensive, but at Bruno’s or Publix it is usually only 2.50$ for 12 eggs.

I only use Pure Vanilla extract, and to be honest I don’t feel like the brand makes that big of a difference, but the fact that it is 100% Pure Vanilla Extract can make or break the cakes AND the frosting.

Never put your flour and sugar in first.

I personally like to have the butter melted, not just softened, when I am making frosting. I think it creates a smoother effect. Surely fancy pastry chefs will disagree, but just put my cupcake in your mouth and be happy.

One rule I ALWAYS follow is to put wet ingredients in your mixture first. I also like to bake in small batches at a time to find out exactly how many small batches it takes to make the perfect amount. This way there is never a ridiculous waste of ingredients. I find that three small batches of frosting puts a nice amount on each cake for a dozen.

This was actually a learning experience for me, because I was unhappy with the amount that two batches of frosting yielded for the cakes.

The first batch and second batch of cakes came out perfect. Unfortunately, the chocolate batch of cakes was a wee bit dry for my taste, but because of the time constraint, I had to finish up. I’ll know for next time to check twice every time!

All in all this was a good learning experience. It was my first bake sale and the pressure got to me a little, especially when I found out I was not going to make my money back.

Alas, the baking will go on!

This relates back to a previous post: The Challenge.  The sermon was about Jesus being the light and the call for Christians to reflect it.  The Sunday School was discussion-based on the Truth Project that we finished last Sunday.  We talked about the need to step into the political realm and other realms to bring light to non-Christians.  It’s funny that the sermon and the Sunday School always compliment each other in message.The pastor brought up a quote by Rick Warren, the author of “The Purpose Driven Life”:  ”there are two reasons why a person does not know Christ: 1, they haven’t met a Christian and 2, they met a Christian.” (This may not be exact wording.)  There was a lot of discussion about this and Flash, the tattooist in the series who gave his life story.  Flash tried to go to church and was called a “pagan.”  This Christian did not embody the love of Christ.

We talked about the fact that “God weeps for the outcast.”  Obvious sins like being gay, stealing, murdering, and adultery are evaluated ahead of internal sins like lust, greed, envy, and pride.  We shun the gay when we should love all people including the gays.  There were antidotes of people continue to befriend the gays that they knew and other Christians telling them to stop associating with them!  At the same time, Christians need to speak out against things that are wrong.  This is the truth in love principle that is hard to do (but easy to do one without the other).

Finally, part of the message was to shine the light on the darkness inside.  This is to examine what you are doing wrong.  One of my problem areas is unwillingness to serve Christ.  I have never consistently been involved with a ministry and have only gone a few short-term mission trips.  I also have had a problem with lust but I have had Christ shine the light on this.  I haven’t done these things in a while but that doesn’t mean that they went away.  Additionally, I have a lack of generosity.  God has been working on me with this fault but I have a long ways to go.

In Sunday School, a person had the courage to say that things weren’t going so great for her.  This stuck me a lot.  I don’t have the courage to confide my problems to a group of people.  This brings me back to the light analogy.  If we are more transparent with others, then others can hold us accountable.  I was speaking with someone in the new fellowship hall about “fine” or “good” being a quick response so you don’t actually have to answer the question “how are you doing?”  (I say “a person” and “someone” to protect identity.)

The importance of  excellent quality assistants can never be under estimated. When one works at the level of photography that I am often engaged to under take, namely marketing shoots. The level of responsibility is huge and that responsibility is shared on my part by the confidence I have in the team of people that work WITH me. In the first instance that is a camera operator whose job it is to manage the images on a high res Hasselblad camera, change lenses and ensure everything is working smoothly, next is my number one lighting technician who must be proficient with a wide range of strobe lighting and all the various accessories, soft boxes, snoots, grids reflectors and attachments that we use on a shoot, next is his right hand man who will work with him putting together the component parts. Then there are the two film lighting technicians that I use to oversee the powering up and management on the continuous lighting that I use on poster shoots, they are very knowledgeable people able to mould and control light in a filmic way. All this team are professional in their own right and have amassed their knowledge over a number of years and a good team such as the one I enjoy are able to work collectively with me as one, second guessing what is coming next. This is what makes a successful shoot and is reflected in the results.

With everything happening so fast … it’s hard to believe that there is luck. I tend to believe the is but things that happen around us aren’t based on luck, 80% of the things happen without and explanation. And I believe that’s the way it has to be … unexplainable!.

Avem tendinta sa incercam sa gasim o explicatie pentru toate lucrurile care ni se intampla. Avem tendinta sa gasim pe cel ce este vinovat de cea ce s-a intampla si mereu avem tendinta sa ne gandim cum de s-a intamplat. Insa trecutul nu se schimba insa putem schimba viitorul concentrandu-ne la prezent, concentrandu-ne la ceea ce a mai ramas.

Pentru ca independent de noi, viata merge mai departe. Poate nu pe drumul pe care am vrea noi sa mearga dar merge. Trecutul este in trecut tot ce conteaza acum este prezentul, greselile s-au facut si chiar nu mai avem ce face decat sa ne concentram pe diminuarea consecintelor. Nu trebuie insa sa refuzam ajutorul celor care ni-l pot oferi pentru ca, un lucru se rezolva mai usor in 2 … 3 … 10.

Stiu ca sunt si persoanele alea care ne calca pe nervi cu intrebari pe care tind sa le repete … insa eu vorbesc de persoanele care au rabdarea sa te asculte si sa inteleaga exact care este problema. Pentru ca nu este ok sa te “arunci” cu picioarele inainte.

Norocul este doar o mica parte care trebuie ignorata in luarea deciziilor. Pentru ca nu noi “ne facem norocul”. Defapt definindul este doar acel precentaj in care decizia pe care am luat-o sa se intampla si/sau sa fie mai buna decat planuisem noi. Insa nu este ceva pe care trebuie sa ne bazam.

Viata nu este nasoala, o nu, asta pentru ca nimic din ceea ce se intampla nu se intampla fara un rost, poate suna stupid si stiu ca sunt enspee mii motive pentru care nu este asa si stiu ca sunt si oamenii aia … care zic ca viata este nasoala pentru ca bla bla bla. Stiti ce … mi se rupe mie de ce v-ati trezit voi sa ziceti intr-o zi in care erati plictisiti, viata este asa cum vrei tu sa fie atata timp cat ai curajul sa iei deciziile pe care vrei sa le iei bazandu-te pe propia ta raspundere si pe propriul tau “instinct” in a lua deciziile.

Oricum nu stiu de la ce am pornit cu acest “chapter” si nici unde vroiam sa ajung insa … am zis ceea ce vroiam sa zic (cred) asa ca … let it go.

Twilight seems to happen a lot around here right now. It would be a good town for vampires. It’s completely dark by four, and when I drive to work at eight, they sky is still only thinking about waking up. I’ve hardly seen the sun in a month. One morning I watched it rise from the window of the barnehagen – bright and orange and clear – but it was raining again two hours later. One mercy is that the icy weather has receded for the moment, so no scraping frost off windscreens or skidding on the roads. (The boardwalk by the river, however, remains treacherous.)

In less than a month I will be in Australia for Christmas. I can’t wait, though sunshine and beaches seem mighty improbable right now. But I am not wishing the time away. There are many things to do before then in my twilight world.
