Come mi promuovo?

Ugh…I tell ya. I am NOT inspired. I want to do something awesomely creative, but alas…the ideas are not here. They’ve stepped out…please leave a message…beep.

I’ll take this moment to do two things.

(1) Share with you a song… How about this one? Sugar High.

(2) Next, lemme tell you a story about my neighbor, aka, “The Crazy Lady”. I feel amused and slightly annoyed, so I thought I’d share. I live next door to a little old lady who seems nice and innocent if you do NOT live near her. But to us next door, and those living upstairs from her, she is BAD! She once accused our upstairs neighbor of making erotic noises for three hours. She said she had proof as she recorded these noises…IN HER JOURNAL! I would love to see this journal. lol. About two years ago she aggresively harrassed me and my husband. We caught her outside smelling our windows and when she caught sight of us she began screaming that our children stink. We don’t HAVE children. Oh man, it was strange, and we couldn’t calm her so we finally called the police. I know I know, how horrible to call the police on a little old lady. But she is scary. lol. Anyways, the police and property management told her very firmly not to harrass us anymore, and she hasn’t, but after that she hung an air freshner on her front door. You know, one of those little evergreen trees you hang in the car…no joke. I’m always tempted to just yank it off and toss it in the bushes, but I don’t want any trouble. Then today I noticed she has added a SECOND little tree to her door knob! A silent indication that she still believes we have smelly children. Ooooooh ….she’s a nasty little thing. I wish she was one of those nice little old ladies I could bake cookies for, but oh well…at least it’s amusing.

Yesterday saw the first Content is King conference take place in the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. Organised by Media Contact, the conference promised some world-class speakers which we certainly got.

First up we had Tom Hayes from Lightbox, an award-winning Irish web design company. Tom was there to show us how to produce a winning website and went into some detail of layouts and the importance of placement of various elements of a website and how a simple a change of name or more forceful calls to action can change the success of a website.

Will McInnes, well known online marketer and director of Nixon McInnes was there to give a very entertaining talk about blogs. Will showed us how to take a simple blog and add to it to make it a lot more than ‘just a blog’. He told us about adding widgets and gave some examples of companies who have used very simple but innovative ideas to transform their online business. One such example was Nike Plus, who have created an online community of exercise enthusiasts with their Nike Plus digital pedometer, which can be inserted in a running shoe to take details of a run and then the data can be uploaded to your profile and shared with other runners and enthusiasts.

Next up was Social Media, marketing and communications expert Krishna De. Krishna gave 20 useful tips on social media in 20 minutes and got everyone thinking about which elements of social media will best suit their business and how to stand out from the crowd.

The mid-morning session was concentrated on how to create videos and podcasts that stick. First speaker Joe Conway from Digicast gave us an insight into the best way to create a podcast. Some of the tips were very helpful, from what equipment one needs -digital recorder, microphone, headphones, computer – to how to talk into the mic to avoid pop sounds -speak into it sideways.

Phil Scott Vice President, Consumer Digital Group of Kodak was up next and he brought us through the history of Kodak and their technologies and how they are used by businesses to create high quality videos.

The final speaker was Colin Hetherington from Zoo Digital who came to speak about how to make a winning video and boost it with guerilla PR. Colin had some interesting insights though I’m not sure that telling people to get their video on the ‘most viewed’ page on YouTube by any means necessary was a great idea when spam is such a problem for companies these days. You can see all of Colin’s presentation here as he has kindly uploaded it for Content Is King attendees.

That was the end of the morning session and after the lunch break there was an interesting panel discussion about viral videos. Sophie Merry of Groovy Dancing Girl fame was there as well as the participants and creators of a new video for Age Action, Growing Up Is Optional. Age Action are hoping that this quirky, funny video will go viral and promote Age Action and the elderly.

You can follow all of the tweets from yesterday by going to http://search.twitter.com and searching for #CIK the hashtag used yesterday.

<script type=”text/javascript” src=”js/prototype.js”></script>
<script type=”text/javascript” src=”js/scriptaculous.js?load=effects,builder”></script>
<script type=”text/javascript” src=”js/lightbox.js”></script>

<link rel=”stylesheet” href=”css/lightbox.css” type=”text/css”

I used the red channel in Photoshop to print a cartoon of this design for tracing. I darkened some of the lines with a black Micron pen and also added a few extra lines here and there to delineate major colour gradations.

Then I traced it with an HB pencil and my lightbox. That lightbox is the best $50 I’ve ever spent. In an ideal world I would have bought one with a huge surface area but even this little box is a huge help to me.

ot1:
ot1: siiii
ot1: undeva are o chestie de-aia, surub-ish
ot1: de rotesti sa invarti aparatul
ot1: stii?
Z: da
ot1: pe-aici
ot1: na si ala e un surub mare
ot1: si am putut sa pun surubul ala in spoturi
Z: :|
ot1: ca aveau si ele niste gauri pt alte suruburi
Z: asa usor ?
ot1: it wasn't easy man
ot1: ca nu erau chiar de aceeasi dimensiune
Z:
Z: I want one of these!
ot1: )
Z: crap
Z: that didn;t work very well
Z: am facut paste, totul era in regula, pana am salvat
Z: atunci au disparut liniile
Z: :|
ot1: de la placa video
Z: ?
ot1: e cumva serialul in background? pe pauza?
ot1: ca asa pateam eu cu pc-ul vechi
Z: da
Z: de unde stii ?
Z:
Z: you are absolutly right
Z: acum se vede bine
ot1: aren't you glad that you have smart friends?
Z:

I plan to design a portion of a song for this Music Video Projector. SONG: Fujiya & Miyagi

I plan to design a portion of a song for this Music Video Projector.

SONG: Fujiya & Miyagi – Collarbone (2:01 – 2:53)

CONCEPT: To follow the lyrics as faithfully as possible, while labeling the parts of the skeleton mentioned in the song.

INSPIRATION:

STYLEFRAMES:
1. SUPERBRIGHT
Playing off the childish nature of this section of the song, I tried to fuse the colors of the mesmerizing neon x-rays with addictive candy colors. Playful. Jovial. The labels are in the background, but it is the quirky bones that take center stage.

2. CLASSIC
This will have a very ancient, vintage, organic atmosphere. A full body, realistic rendering will be marked up with circular pencil marks which will reveal a “pencil x-ray” of the bones underneath the layer of skin. This will be complemented by handwritten labels giving a modern day interpretation to classical analysis.

3. LIGHTBOX
X-Rays are illuminated on top of a lightbox. Hands will present and then drop X-Ray Sheets onto a light box as the song continues, with strong, aggressive labels naming each bone.

That’s it for now. Community is a good show. Seacrest Out.

Pictures are worth a thousand words! And in the online selling world, pictures can make or break you

Pictures are worth a thousand words! And in the online selling world, pictures can make or break your business. When you go to the store and shop you are able to try things on, see their true color under different light, feel the texture and material, and get a good idea of just what it is that you’re buying — right?! But what happens when the items you are trying to buy are listed on the internet? You can’t feel, smell, touch, or hear … all of your senses are disabled with the exception of sight. You are going to judge whether you like or dislike that item based on the way it is presented in the pictures that are listed.

So, what does this mean for sellers on the internet? This means that if you want to maximize the number of sales you have, you need to present your items in the best light possible (every pun intended here!).

If you’re like me, you don’t want to spend money if you can do it yourself and yield the same results. One day I was at my local photography store I saw one of these “Pop-Up” light tents. It consisted of a collapsible white fabric box with a hole in the front and 3 lights – used for photographing small objects in photographic studios (like the shot of the chocolate reindeer to the left).

I was going to purchase it until I saw the $100 price tag. No way I am going to spend $100 on some fabric and 3 lights when the material costs far less. So I set off and built one of these light tents and it did not come out bad at all.

Here are the tools and items you will need to get started:

A Box — any box will do. The size of the box will depend on the items that you are selling.

Fabric — any type will do, but it is recommended that you buy a white muslin. You will need to buy enough to cover the entire box that you have chosen to use.

Tape

Glue — a glue stick or spray adhesive is fine (really any glue is fine, liquid just takes long to dry)

White bristol board (a heavey weight paper that is used for drawing) — I would suggest that you buy about four of these because you will need to do a little cutting

A Light — a bright desk lamp will work best for small and medium sized boxes. A clamp light may work well for larger boxes.

Here is the process:

Take your box with a tape ruler and marker and measure in 2″ from the side of the box marking multiple points with your marker. When your done you will see your border, connect the points using your straight edge to where you should have a nice looking square/rectangle in the middle of the box with a 2″ border around it. Leave the top and bottom of the box alone as you will not need to mark it

STEP 1

Cut out the boxes you’ve drawn. Repeat that to the sides of the box where you have drawn the boxes. When you’re done, cut off the top of the box or remove the flaps on the top of the box. LEAVE THE BOTTOM INTACT!

Now take your Bristol board and make lines with your marker for every two inches 16 times. Then proceed to cut out 16 strips with your scissors. Glue the paper strips into the box. Make sure the side with marker goes against the cardboard so it can not be seen.

STEP 3

Take another piece of Bristol board and cut is so the width is the same as the inside of the box and the length is much longer then the box. Place the long piece of Bristol board into the box to where the piece curves to the bottom. Avoid creasing as it will show up in your photo. Cut off excess paper that is sticking out the top.

STEP 4

Cut your fabric to where it will cover the holes. Then cut a big piece to where it will cover the top of the box. Tape the fabric to cover the holes in the box except the one that is facing your background. Then tape the top piece on.

STEP 5

YOU’RE DONE!! Now all that you have to do is light the box.

Voila!

There are many variations on creating a light box, but this is what I have found works for me. If you are having a shadow problem then I suggest lighting the other sides of the boxes. Once you have it constructed, feel free to play around with your new construction and have fun!!

Happy photographing, and I’ll see you at checkout!

Other Materials

Lighting (utility lights, photography lights, and desk lamps with bright bulbs will work)

Sewing machine

Two yards of white fabric (for a 60″ bolt — I used 100% cotton stretch jersey in bright white)

White thread

At least twelve 1/4″ eyelets (and eyelet setter, though pliers and creativity will also work)

Rubber hammer

Measuring tape

Scissors

Pencil

K’nex Lightbox Structure Instructions (with clickable images!):

My apologies for the yellowish image quality, but unfortunately I did not have a lightbox for my lightbox!

Note: In the first four steps, I have indicated places where blue K’nex/red or white connectors take the place of white K’nex/purple or blue connectors in the general model using an *asterisk symbol. These longer blue pieces are used as ground supports on the bottom, and as places where the eyelets of your screen will catch along the top or side of the structure (depending on which direction you are photographing). Furthermore, not all blue replacements have been indicated with an asterisk — just those that are hard to see. Keep an eye out for these subtle changes in the general structure!

Make the bottom most piece (Note: here I have used two blues and an orange connector to replace eight red pieces where I ran out)

Outer Bottom

Construct bottom supports, noting places where blue rods have replaced white ones

Inner Bottom (upside down)

Join the two bottom pieces together so that blue rods slide into their red and white connector pieces, creating feet.

Bottom Structure

Make for side supports as follows:

Side Supports

Connect side suports to their appropriate positions on the bottom support

Bottom and Side Supports

Make topmost piece (easy!) noting the asterisks where blue rods replace white:

Outer Top (upside down)

Construct top supports, noting locations where blue supports replace white

Inner Top (upside down)

Connect two portions of the top structure together, so that blue rods slide into place, while white rods make solid connections to the remainder of the structure

Top Structure (upside down)

HURRAH!

Finished piece!

Lightbox Screen Sewing Instructions (It’s easy! You are making an opened box shape!):

Iron fabric flat

Cut the following: One “bottom” square measuring 17.5″x17.5″ and Four “side” squares measuing 17.5″x20″. [Remember: Jersey material is stretchy, which is great for pulling the screen across the sides of the lightbox, but treacherous in the cutting department. Be careful not to pull the fabric while cutting or your squares will come out wonky-shaped.]

Pin and sew all four side pieces to four sides of bottom piece (Using a 1/2″ seam allowance)

Iron all four bottom seams flat

Pin and sew adjacent edges of side pieces together (Using a 1/2″ seam allowance), thus completing the box shape.

Iron all four side seams flat

Pin and finish the circumference of the opening with 3/4″ seam by folding the unfinished edge underneath itself

Iron the finished opening flat and trim loose thread

Eyelet Application

Fit the finished lightbox screen over the K’nex structure with the opening at the top, and seams along all four corners

For each side, pull the flap across the top so the screen fits snugly around the sculpture with two opposing sides overlapping their adjacent opposing sides

On all four corners, use a pencil to mark the eyelet placement at all three points where the blue K’nex poke outwards from the frame

Remove screen from K’nex structure

Cut small holes at each point where you have made a pencil mark for an eyelet opening

Hammer eyelets into each opening using a rubber hammer and an eyelet setter (Lisa at U*handbag has a great eyelet tutorial if you need a visual for this part)
