I spotted her silhouetted against the light of a candle at the open window of a ruined seafront house – apparently staring out to sea. But, I soon realized that she was blind to the gathering storm when she said, “What a beautiful day – he will soon return in his little boat and he will once more fill the hole in my aching heart”.

As the sky filled with dark clouds and the first heavy spots of rain began to fall she continued, “My love is coming home and my heart warms – like my face in the sun”.

A shard of lightening fractured the charred sky and thunder ruptured the air. “I can hear his boat as he draws it up upon the beach – soon he will be with me and I will be in his arms once more”.

The wind tore in through the broken window whipping the ragged curtains while the rain pounded on the roof above. “And now I hear his boots upon the stone steps leading up to our house – he is here!”

The splintered door was blown open – the air was sucked from the room – the vacuum snuffing out the guttering candle – and I could see her no more in the dark eye-socket void of her window.

A few blog post ago I mentioned how this summer I was going to storm chase and last night I kicked it off with an impressive lightening show over Forresters Beach.

They predicted a thunder storm around 11pm and it hit around 7pm with rain and then lightening around 8pm. So I headed out to Terrigal and shot towards Forresters Beach (the headland in the background on the right) to see the best of the lightening.

I played around with iso’s, f stops and shutter speeds to get the best combination of strikes, ambient light and low noise (noise seams to be the biggest issue). Still a work in progress and learning heaps. At the end of the summer I will be publishing an article about my findings of shooting both digital and slide film which will be accompanied by a feature in the field video as well.

Well a whaddis fadda?!

Just yesterday we blasted the eediat gal Lisa Hype over her song Proud a mi Bleaching.

At least she owned up to it openly.

However, Major League batter Sammy Sosa wants us to believe that he is undergoing a “rejuvenation process for his skin” and that is why he was photographed at two different events last week looking like a duppy.

After the pictures came out of Dominican Republic-born Sammy last week and people (naturally) asked what in the Little Kim, bleach face, Nadinola-rubbing hell is going on, a former Cubs employee, Rebecca Polihronis, the former Cubs Care/Community relations manager, jumped to his defence… and of course, promptly made the whole situation more absurd.

From the Chicago Tribune:

He is going through a rejuvenation process for his skin (read: bleaching),” Polihronis said. “Women have it all of the time. He was surprised he came out looking so white. I thought it was a body double. Part of (the photo appearance) is just the lighting.

“He is in the middle of doing a cleansing process to his skin (as in cleansing it of melanin?). The picture is deceiving. He said, ‘If you saw me in person, you would be surprised. When you see me in person, it is not going to seem like the picture.’

“People who saw him in person did not react the same way. He can’t believe it is such a big deal.”

Polihronis, the former Cubs Care/Community Relations manager for the team, said Sosa told her he has used moisturizing treatment (like Ambi or Fair & White?) at night on his face.

“He has always been concerned with the way he looks (you mean black?),” she said. “Probably just bad timing going to an awards show.”

“He was doing a dermatological skin process after years and years (of playing baseball) in the sun,” Polihronis said. “It did come out looking weird (in the picture).”

You know what we at islandista have to say to this – EH! Especially when you take a look at the photo below of how he looked back in 2005.

Not that we need to point out the flipping obvious but – if he is just undergoing something as innocuous sounding (to white people like Polihronis who ent know nuh better or pretending she don’t) as skin rejuvenation, how does that explain the obviously straightened, slicked back hair and the creepy green contacts? Creepy contacts, which by the way, he started with several months ago, as seen in the pic below of him from May.

And if it was just a ‘lighting’ problem at the event, why was he pictured at two events on two subsequent nights – November 4th and 5th – looking like Casper the Dominican ghost?

I mean, come onnnn Sammy. If you’re bleaching, just do like Lisa Hype and be “proud a yu bleaching cos yu cream dear”. These flimsy arguments just insulting, man and we will not play along and pretend your self hatred is other than what it is.
While they are on another level of majical capabilities, their emotions run just as deeply as ours do, more so in fact because of their wide range of mental prowess. The pictures in this collection depict Faeries in their true states. Most are pretty, some not so pretty. So if there’s anyone who gets offended or upset easily by unpleasant scenes, please turn away now. Otherwise, enjoy….. if you believe.

Many chemical tooth whiteners on the market are very irritating to gums, even painful, and have short-term benefits at best. Regular beverages such as coffee and tea stain the teeth, and while you can do your best to keep stains at bay through brushing, you will still need regular teeth cleanings twice a year. That said, there are some natural remedies you can try to help eliminate stains.

Herbal Tooth Whitener:
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp 3% hydrogen peroxide
Dip toothbrush into the mixture and brush for three minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Fllow with regular tooth paste or herbal mouth rinse.

Strawberry Whitener:
To lighten tooth stains and whiten your teeth, crush a fresh strawberry and rub it onto your teeth. The natural alpha-hydroxy acids found in strawberry should help lighten teeth. Follow by rinsing with water.

Hibernation of the sun, wintering and in its night-time shade

Only rearing its head when forced or pulled out

Up, into its orbital arc of arching skyline to heat the lands cold furnace

But for now it is thickened fog that whirls, spinning pools

All waspish dust cloud blending with the glass spikes of silvered grass

Through the mirrored finished lakes of grey ashen rain

Frost which catches the lightly splintered hands of the tree beech

They reach down from the skylines over open concrete pastures

The bogeymen, waiting for their chance to fright

Whipping down lightening rods from behind their boughs

Crashing down on hunched figures, huddled, sheltering below

Unsuspecting, these giant urban monsters cast shadows

Their menacing looming blackness that stretches out

Like black holes sleeted by disappearing hailstones

Cosmically star-like, driven into that other universe

All planetary dust

Now the skittering sun slides from path to trunk to bank

Whilst its eclipsed crimson mask slips from view

It becomes lost in the limitless grey places

Blocked out by the statuesque bold towers, hell raised to heavens eye

The entrapped rouge ball of light refracts its prismatic trails

Right across the glinting fractured lenses of mirrored reptilian beanstalks

All is emblazoned glass and fiery metal

Even the nooks and ledges for the sheltering wintering crows

Blacker than the howling winds and quickening thunder claps

That drags in the pitted pewter platter of the moon

Now enthroning the candied cabochon of sun

To eat it whole like a celestial winter apple

Whose pips where spat out into the galaxy, to revolve

All dazzling in perfect frosted striations

Lighting the way home for those that seek a safe haven

Settled in cosy hibernation until the suns return

In the appearance conscious society in which we live there is a myth for women of colour, that light

In the appearance conscious society in which we live there is a myth for women of colour, that lighter paler complexions portray beauty, riches and success. This misguided belief has resulted in a huge market for skin lightening pills; creams; soaps and bleaching products. Some people use them secretly knowing what the side effects are, others use poorly labelled under the counter products not knowing the danger. In India, women strive to achieve the “wheat” colour much-requested on Asian dating websites. In the Caribbean, light skin is also highly desired while in African countries even seemingly minor variations in skin tone can contribute to ethnic conflict.

The subject is a controversial one. Skin Deep will engage young women, to produce a visual art exhibition whilst gaining skills in photography, visual art and learning aspects of film-making and interview techniques. The aim of the project is to create more awareness about the long term effects of using skin bleaching products on skin but also to highlight the effect on the person within. Exhibition Launch: Tuesday 10th November

Exhibition November 2009 until January 2010 Monday – Friday 10am – 4pm

Venue: BVSC, 138 Digbeth, Birmingham, B5 6DR

I don’t know about you, but I find sleeping in trees rather difficult, for many reasons. Here’s some of them:

1. Not enough leg room.

2. Monkeys. ALWAYS a problem.

3. Fighting for tree space. There’s always one person who wants to steal your turf (foliage).

4. Autumn. You have to find an evergreen.

5. No where to put your toothbrush.

6. Rolling around in your sleep. *THWACK!* “OW!”

7. People staring. My favourite way of getting them to go away is to make monkey noises. (They don’t always go away, but it’s so much fun)

8. Getting up there in the first place.

9. Disgruntled Squirrel families. (they throw things).

10. They can’t have to many leaves. (That would make it too comfortable, according to my dad.)

11. Lightening. Trees are nature’s conductors. I advise that you dress in rubber.

Mary back in the drivers seat, our first trip to NJMSP!

A couple video’s to cap the weekend before we dive into writing:
Mary Around the Lightbulb
Mary Passing Before the Bridge
Kyle Passing Before the Bridge

Mary writes:

September 25th-Friday
Kyle and I were very excited for our 1st track event in New Jersey on Lightning. We began our journey north out of Vienna at about 8pm- Kyle leading the way in his M and me following close behind in mine. Kyle had chosen the quaint “Country Inn” in Millville for us to stay on Friday night- (although he toyed with possibly pulling into one of the many “shady” motels along the way just to get a reaction! )

We hit the bar for a night cap- Kyle enjoyed a couple of dixie cup sized Crown on the rocks- then off to sleep for an early morning at the track.

September 26th- Saturday
We arrive at the track, recognizing some of the Mercedes club members from my first event at Shenandoah. I was trying to scope out a good instructor. We were approached by a guy, who appeared to be on a mission directly towards us- he asked who was driving the BMWs- we both fess’d up as being the guilty ones. Turns out he is also a BMW guy and wanted to drive with us. He introduced himself as “_____”. (Neither one of could remember his name). I quickly told him he could be my instructor and Kyle chimed in as well. He was off to do his 1st run with the instructor group so I joined along to get a feel for the track from his POV. I jumped into his E30 and awkwardly tried to hook the harness- he pointed to what I needed to connect so that he didn’t have to reach any inappropriate areas (haha!) and off we went! It was much faster than the track I was used to but that made me even more excited to be behind the wheel- could I possibly be this fast too???

Time for the Green group. “___” seems to be a bit cautious with me. I’m sensing that he is uneasy about my skills as he keeps telling to take it easy and slow down around the turns. He points out the line, I listen closely and feel like I am getting it-yet he is still being cautious with me. I want to go faster! Patience! Learn the track- get the line down. He tells me after the 1st session that it was good that there were no white knuckles- “from me” I ask, “No” he is talking about himself!- I am his first female student!

After a few more sessions I’m feeling more and more confident and getting impatient with him being cautious- turn 5…I don’t fully track out- he waits…pauses… then asks what I was doing. Uh-oh, did I actually just start to day dream?? I seriously just mentally drifted away with lack of adrenaline!
I have to stick with his plan if he is going to trust my excellent driving! It just feels like I am going slowww. He wants me to let people pass-but I want to do the passing.

Finally! Session #4 he lets me pick it up! Oh yea, Kyle has confessed that we forgot his name and tells me it is “Rob”. Now I’m having fun! Get to 125m I think on the straight. After the last run of the day, I finish feeling fulfilled! Can’t wait for Sunday (weather forecast is rain!)

We leave for Sea Isle to stay at Michelle’s family beach house with her and Wynn. We’re exhausted, go to the Lobster Loft for dinner- then back to her place for an early night to sleep again.

September 27- Sunday
Up at 6:20am and RAIN. Get to the track- looks like a lot of people may have bailed out but the show must go on! I’m a little surprised that I had no apprehensions about the track being wet- off I go!

“Rob” is cautious again but appropriate to the conditions. He was testing the grip of the car and pleased with the results. He lets me push it a bit more. Over the next couple of sessions I’m having fun with turn #6- getting a little slide in the rear and happy that he says I handled it perfectly!

Session # 3- yellow flag is out- yikes- someone in front of me goes off track- grass is like ice and into the guard rail! I take special note of that!

I have just discovered that “Rob” is actually “Bob”!! We really need to get better with names!! I have also just discover that Bob- who is from Jersey- knows one of my best friends Billy from Baltimore through work! Small freaking world!!

I complete my last session with Bob with his special test- he “claims” that he closed his eyes for a whole lap to see how I handle it- aside from one more rear dance in #6 on the wet track which I caught him with one eye open on- I pass the test! I’m back up to top speeds (for me). I had to ask if he was ok- I hadn’t any talk out of his mouth for a few laps- I guess that means I was doing a good job! Then we start chatting a bit more, I’m passing lots of people-(that’s how I think I remember it) and we are just chatting and telling stories as I am racing around the track. Bob reminds me to keep both hands on the wheel-oops- I talk a lot with my hands!!

I have decided to finish the weekend with that great last session and skip the final round out! I’m exhausted and fulfilled the adrenaline rush I was looking for during this event.

The rain that I thought would put a “damper” on our driving turned out to make the weekend so much more exciting! I definitely learned from it and look forward to advancing these new skills to other events!

My overview of this is that while Bob was cautious with me in the beginning- I received many claps from him during my sessions. I think I made him proud!

On to the next…maybe I can get solo’d at Shenandoah next weekend!

–
Kyle writes:

After a 3.5hr drive from DC to Millville, NJ on Friday night Mary and I check into the Country Inn in Millville just 5 miles from the track…we have to be there for tech and registration at 7am on Saturday morning. Dreams of racing fill our heads until the alarm sounds at 6am.
We will be driving the Lightning track at New Jersey Motor Park, a highspeed circuit, 1.8 miles long, 7 turns, 5 right handers and 2 lefts, the slowest of which we find out shortly can be taking at 50mph.
Mary is in Green group (Novice) and somehow I get put in Blue (Advanced) … having never driving this track before I was a bit nervous! After a tech, registration and a short 8:15 drivers meeting Mary and I unload the cars, check tire pressures and check to be sure all our tire lugs are torqued to spec. During our prep a fellow BMW instructor comes over introduces himself and offers to be our instructor. I’m relieved because now I have someone to “show me the line” on this new track.

Day1 – learning a new track
Session 1 – going slow, learning the track, drive at 4/10ths, nice and easy…a line is always easier to learn at low speeds when it’s easy to place the car where you want on the track.

Sessions 2&3 – got the line down, keeping it smooth and going quicker, up to 7/10ths.

Session 4&5 – head out solo and start pushing 8/10ths, a few extra mph out of the lightbulb and I’m hitting nearly 130Mph on the straight.

Day2 – rain, rain, puddles and more rain

Session 1 & 2 – back out with the instructor, more grip than expected in the wet, still hitting 120mph on the main straight.

Session 3 – solo in the rain, taking it easy, get the DSC to engage a few times on the tight left turn #4, definitely leaving DSC on while it’s wet out!
It stops raining, the sun comes out and the track dries up with the exception of a few puddles at the edges where are easy to avoid.

Session 4 – this was going to be my last session of the day, DSC off because it kept killing power out of the lightbulb (turn7) and the blind right hander (turn1). Pushing hard 9/10ths, passing my red Porsche buddy (not David) and others, now I’m taking 2,3,4 & 5 in 3rd, putting the peddle all the way down between 4 and 5 and between 5 & 6, passing under the bridge at 105mph, then braking hard for the tightest turn (6), up to 110mph before the lightbulb.

Session5 – over ½ the drivers in attendance have headed home announcement is made that Blue and Red groups will be combined for an extended 30minute session, yup that’s right I’m headed out with the other advanced drivers and the instructors…wow, a few of those instructors are really quick in their race prep’d cars, I’m humbled, pit in after 20 minutes, want to avoid the Red Mist (end of day mental exhaustion) and call it a great weekend!

Track WalkThrough
Entering Turn1 from the back straight, hard on the brakes at the faded white line between start/finish and the #3 braking marker, last part of the braking zone is uphill which means you can save yourself during those late braking moments by holding the brakes just a bit longer and digging into the incline before turning in late for Turn1. No need to hug the inside apex, ½ a car width away is fine, up over the crest then tracking out all the way to the left. I wasn’t getting back to WOT until after the crest of the hill but I see myself in the future putting the foot down prior to the crest, DSC was consistently kicking in after the crest as the car got light and would 4 wheel slide to the outside of the track with good speed. Having downshifted into 3rd from 5th during braking you can wind out 3rd and shift into 4th before a quick 1second but firm brake before entering turn 2, a sweeping right hander, shift down to 3rd. Another corner best not to tight apex, a car width from the curbing feels about right, heading about ¾’s down the track before turning in harder for turn 3. Import to get parallel with the right hand side of the track to set yourself up properly for a tight left hand turn 4, once turned into 4 crossing the apex tight knowing you are in the clear to track out just as the right side of the track comes in you can put the pedal down and start winding out 3rd as you head for the turnin point (left side curbing) before turn 5, medium 1second brake before turning into 5, important to apex late and very close to the curb, track is off camber and downhill to the left as you are turning right, back to WOT! Track out left straighten the wheel a bit as you are parallel with the curbing on the left and shift to 4th, continue 5 a long sweeper to the right that straightens out just before going under the bridge, I was hitting about 105mph here toward the end of the weekend, I could see 115 coming easily as you carry more speed through 5. On the brakes hard midway between the bridge and #3 braking marker, downshift to 3rd, late apex the sharp left hander and track out at the end of the right hand curbing, wind out 3 going uphill, shifting into 4th as you run out of gear and head back a gradual decline toward turn 7, the lightbulb…hitting about 110mph, medium braking for a second to pull speed down below 90mph (at least this weekend), entering the lightbulb about ¾ track left, looking around to the very late apex at the bottom end of the lightbulb, if you are looking there you will naturally and gradually turn in to meet the right hand apex at the curbing as you move from maintenance throttle to WOT at the lowest point on the track. Trackout after the lightbulb shouldn’t happen until after you crest the hill on the back stretch and are into the passing zone, then shift into 5th, I was cresting the hill at about 100mph, winding out 4th and shifting to 5th will put you upwards of 130mph before braking hard and returning to turn #1.

So I was walking from Western to meet my mom at her work during the rain and I was getting so fed up

So I was walking from Western to meet my mom at her work during the rain and I was getting so fed up. Today I hated the rain, hated my tiny umbrella, hated that I was wet and cold; basically I was angry at the world for having made it rain today. Which was obviously unnecessary frustration aimed at the wrong subject.

But often times I don’t mind the rain at all! I actually find it quite calming, especially when you are lying in bed and you can hear the pitter patter of the raindrops against your window. Or when you’re all snuggled up in your warm blankets and you can just hear the distant rumble of thunder. I always feel so safe being inside, all cozy in my pj’s, and listening to the chaos of a good thunder storm outside. Last night I was woken up at around 4:30am by a mildly serious thunder storm: the rain sounded like golf balls hitting my window, and every so often a flash of lightening would light up my room. But instead of keeping me awake, the sounds of the storm almost lulled me to sleep… like the roar of waves hitting the shore.

All in all, I guess rain storms and thunder storms really aren’t that bad, as long as you are safely tucked away inside where you can watch the tremendous spectacle through a window. Next time I might be caught outside in a rainstrom though, I’ll have to make sure to get a bigger umbrella… and maybe some rain boots!

I’m so confused. I woke up this morning with a lot more room in my lungs to breathe and I remember reading something about dropping or lightening in the 3rd trimester. I did some research this morning, but apparently this doesn’t usually happen until about 4 weeks before labour. But I’m only 30 weeks! Did we miscalculate? I’ll be seeing Dr. Tai (my O.B.) on Friday and I will find out more.

Does anyone have any idea if it’s normal to experience lightening at 30 weeks?

Still adorable, despite the sexism.

Friendships are fucking weird. I’m not saying they’re weird in a bad way. In fact, it might be the only thing that keeps us sane. Think about it. Where would you be without your friends?

More importantly, who would we be without our friends? If it weren’t for my friends Jason and Tim, whom I’ve known since 7th grade, I wouldn’t be the same today. Together we formed our senses of humor, our tastes and our overall demeanor. We always bounced ideas off of each other in regards to music (we were in bands together), relationships, the appropriate time to make AIDS jokes, etc. I will be forever indebted to them for everything they ever did for me. Although, I don’t talk to them as much as I wish, they are still always there in my mind. Friends do that to you. No matter what stupid, sweet things you ever do with your partner it’ll never surpass that prank you pulled during the Ravens-Giants Super Bowl. I always laugh at the IDEA of predictive text. I still sometimes refer to Jason as “jarmo”. The experiences that you share will never go away. That’s how it is with childhood friends, I guess. I know I’ll never have that again. I’m not at all sad about that.

We spent hours and hours together every day for years, and it was hard going to college and having to find new friends. It honestly took me until senior year of college and after graduation to find people I was comfortable enough to be really friends with. I’m blessed to have really great friends in Austin. Truth be told, they’re probably the biggest reason I don’t leave. I’m afraid that lightening can’t strike twice and it’ll take me another 4 years to find people I can confide in and who will call me “gay” on the reg (If you click that link, read definition 3. Will changed that).

With this influx of outsiders trying to burrow their little lives into South Austin you find a lot people having trouble making friends. I feel bad for them. Outside of school and work, it’s hard to find people to befriend. In a world full of douchebags, myself included, you’re always rolling the dice when meeting someone new. Running the risk of sounding like Forrest Gump, you never know what you’re going to get. You might meet some D’n'Der who loves to talk about their favorite Viking Metal band. You might need some dude-brah with a new fucking haircut. You might find someone with the answers to why we all must cry.

Some of my all-time partnerships:

PB&J – I don’t like Peanut Butter, but I won’t deny its contribution to society or all-together catchiness.

Paul McCartney and Wings - Let’s not kid ourselves. When the Wings Remasters come out it’ll be a bigger deal than this trend the world is following called The Beatles. I refer to The Beatles as the Jackson 5 of Paul McCartney’s career, except The Beatles didn’t make Paul a sexual deviant… Or maybe it did. Who knows? “Maybe, I’m amazed at how OVERRATED MY OLD BAND WAS!”

Tango & Cash - Grew up knowing that a true friend was one that went into a compound with you and blew up a warehouse full of baddies.

Bert & Ernie – We know they were more than friends, but we look past that.

I feel like I should branch out more. I should meet more people. On the other hand, I’m really lazy and I love my friends already.

Does anyone have an awesome duo they’d like to share?

———————

Anyway, I’m really excited about a few new albums, and you should be too. Next week it’s Paramore! I know what you’re going to say, “Dago, u r a t0tallie br00t4l d3wd! wut r u doin listenen 2 PARAMORZ?!” Those of you who really know me know I love pop punk with all mi corazon. That album comes out next week and I’m getting psyched. Here’s their new video.

The Fall of Troy’s new album (October 6) is getting me so hyped. I fell in love with these guys in ‘07 when seeing Coheed at Waterloo Park. Coheed was awesome, but these guys totally stole the show for me. A lot of people might know them from playing their song “F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X.” on Guitar Hero III. Anyway, this is one of their new songs.

Finally, Between the Buried and Me is following up their masterpiece Colors with The Great Misdirect (Oct. 27). It’s a tie between these guys and The Mars Volta for my favorite band. These guys tear faces off and feast on the young of the vanquished. SO AWESOME.

This is going to be a great month. Thursday is coming with The Fall of Troy and The Dear Hunter in October.

Anyone wanna go?!

DAGO

PS: Chelsea laid into Tottenham and have secured first. The Texans went to work on Tennessee and ensured that I can hold my head up high for at least a week. Life is really good.

I have realized a fatal flaw in my blog idea. Most of the days I am here I am going to school, going home, eating, sleeping. If it gets monotonous for me, imagine how you will feel.

I don’t think we are at the point quite yet where I have to start making stuff up (dragons in cafeteria, pirate invasion of Intensive Latin Grammar etc) But everyday is not going to have an awesome adventure. That’s my disclaimer.

Today was one of those days that wasn’t all that exciting. I did go to the local gym though and run a kilometer which isn’t much at all but I felt good and got to stretch.

There is also crazy thunder and lightening which is totally awesome. So awesome in fact that it has distracted me from my homework which I will now have to leave for tomorrow. Oh well.

Goodnight!
