GateHouse — A short parable for this holiday season, starring .htaccess files, five lightsabers, inessential ambition and egregious, carrying-a-walrus-with-two-hands-over-your-head stupidity:

I am, as anyone who has spent more than four minutes with me and my collection of stories involving personal interactions with “Weird Al” Yankovic (there are six) will attest, a nerd. Not a geek, mind you, nor a dingus, and not really a twerp, although there was a good period of pronounced twerpery between the years of 1987-1989 that cheerfully coincided with the purchase of a new camera by both my Dad and the school yearbook staff. Good times.

The point is, nerd. To wit, I spent Thanksgiving this year at the home of lovely and hospitable friends who have one baby and five lightsabers. Also to wit, I just said to wit, which actually makes me want to beat myself up. Anyway, after dinner the husband component of this couple produced the replica lightsabers — I’m going to stop and do that again with overbearing punctuation: five. replica.lightsabers — and the small percentage of guests who were able to regard this development without releasing a sigh of utter despondency adjourned directly outside and — well, there’s no other way to say this — had a Jedi fight. I would say we did this for the benefit of my five-year-old son, but I’d be lying if I suggested that I found the entire endeavor to be anything south of way awesome.

Anyway, this minor though not entirely un-violent episode coincided with a time in which I decided, hey, you know what, this Internet thing seems to be gaining traction amongst the youngsters and the media, in that order, so let’s see if I can’t get my blog looking a little spiffier and moved to a new host that can make that happen.

Now, please note here that ability to name “Star Wars” bounty hunters or not I am about as familiar with Internet-based behind-the-curtain futzing as I am with competitive weightlifting, and this sort of work is not only something I have zero experience with, but so far removed from my skill set as to compel anyone who knows me personally to make a snarky yet accurate wiseapple crack, such as, “Great idea, and maybe next you should try out for the basketball team!”

Anyway, you can pretty well imagine how this blog thing went. Everything actually seemed to be gliding along pretty smoothly, until I clicked the first button, and then black clouds closed over my house, I began receiving all manner of colorful error messages about my root directory and .htaccess files, tongues of flame began shooting out of my USB ports (which hurts), and I got a rash, which may or may not be related but I thought I’d bring it up. This is true: at some point I deleted my primary password; at another point the blog reverted to 1997 and everything was in Times New Roman on a white background without character styles and if you know anything about design you know THIS IS THE WORST THING IN THE WORLD. Also in honor of this last hopeless error, I now have Spice Girls songs stuck in my head. Sigh.

So, as my to-do list tonight included two things: 1. Write column and 2. Endeavor to destroy the Internet, I’ve given up on the blog thing and gone back to No. 1, so I’m writing this over a ramshackle muddle of windows that basically serve as a road map of my failures: There’s an FTP site open for some reason, there’s my blog, which seems awful forlorn for something which has no face, and about 400 text documents on my desktop, all of which have “config” in their names, which is a word that screams “Do not jerk around with this file, gravy-brain.”

And oh my goodness but I have just now this very minute no joke noticed that I have managed to temporarily resolve what has been hours of chaos by embarking on my usual plan for fixing all things, from cars to baseboards to toy trains: just putting it back where it was before, and walking away slowly, which is what I am doing right now, the lesson being if you’re going to be all stupid and ambitious have a real nerd around, because he can either fix the problem for you, or provide a lightsaber with which you can take out your aggressions.

This idea came about when I was thinking about how I really, really, really, would like a Lightsaber™ only to steal cool street signs.

I also might be inclined to use it to put holes in things, but otherwise, that’s all I would use a Lightsaber™ for.  Not for good, not for (truly) evil – only for comedy.

Then it occurred to me that I think the same way in regard to having superpowers.  My reasons to possess them aren’t grand by any means.

1) Flight

I talked about this once before, but I’ll bring it up again.  If I could fly, I’d use it to travel, of course, since it would cut my commute time to work in half!  (I’m still employed with this amazing ability.  Great fantasy.)  But the biggest trick I’d pull would involve me showing off my new talent at the Academy Awards™ while the stars walked the Red Carpet®… you know, just to show them up.

2) Invisibility 

C'mon... he deserves it...

If I could turn as transparent as the Balloon Boy Hoax©, I wouldn’t be hanging out in ladies’ locker rooms (although I might sneak into gym to workout for free if I was so inclined).  I’d use it key douchebags’ cars.  If you’d like to know what I’d take the time to scrape – see above.  Carrie Underwood (Patent Pending) should take notes before the next time he cheats…

3) Indestructibility

Bar fights, natch.  Maybe X-Treme Sports®…You know, just to show douchebags up.

4) Super Strength

I’ve always wanted a steamroller to run over different things.  I suppose I’d do the same (or at least similar) with my own hands.

5) Telekinesis

To be lazy.  From my couch.  Also – my bed.  Maybe the shower.

6) Telepathy

To win arguments.  And ladies’ hearts…

7) Time Travel

I’d go back a few days to post this on time on monkeyBLOGmonkeyDO™.

Been spending a lot of time this week playing with and exploring the new iPhone, getting caught up on the last three years of technical and social innovations I’ve been in the dark about. Cut to scene in our kitchen on Tuesday where I was again giving an awesome demonstration of the capabilities of the Lightsaber app, through which you can brandish your space phone and have a simulated — even musically soundtracked — laser sword battle. Upon completion, roommate Brittany said to me: “So is that how you’re going to get a new girlfriend?”

As I was loading up other apps, I couldn’t help but be baffled why the New York Times app, which provides updates from all sections of  the paper in an eye-friendly format, was free, while this skeeball app — and all its incumbent Jersey shore nostalgia — cost 99 cents.

If I can drop a dollar to spend hours trying to win pretend plastic combs and erasers, I can justify spending at least another dollar on the top news of the day.

But you shouldn’t have to pay for the lightsaber app. Lightsaber, like information, wants to be free.

Well it’s Halloween 2009 and I thought i would go and p the Space Shuttle Atlantis to the International Space Station, drop off some halloween candy, play a couple of halloween jokes on the rest of the guys and then come back home. Here a shot that Dark Vader snap as he went by, glad he used his camera and not his lightsaber. Oh well you know what they say….they say a picture is worth a 1000 words!

Right now i can’t think of any collectibles cooler then the force fx lightsabers. Also recently, the item that goes top in the things-that-i-want-list is a darth vader / anakin skywalker force fx lightsaber. Its priority goes even higher than my wanting of a desktop computer. I’m not talking about the ones manufactured by Hasbro, but by Master Replicas. They are higher in quality, made from durable materials and some even feature mark hammil’s (luke skywalker) signature on the lightsaber display stand. Every detail on the replica exacts the one from the movies, and the hilt is often made of metallic materials giving them a glossy finish. These things produce a power-up / power-down sound when activate / deactivated, hum in idle mode and clashing sounds upon contact, which are taken from the real sounds from the movies. Extremely cool! It could be displayed on the stand given with the words “STAR WARS” engraved on it and also could be hung on walls.

your parents, classmates, teacher, grandparents, and anyone else who had no interest in video games until Guitar Hero appeared). In other words, there is not that much hardcore games on it except with a few like Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Sonic Unleashed and others. But most of those are either first or second party games. Most of the games on the Wii are either shovelware or games ported from another system like the PS2. Let us not forget games that are based on franchises like Bratz, High School Musical, and George of the Jungle [add groaning here].

Well look no further for the action-adventure hit No More Heroes is a breath of fresh air from the typical games on the Wii.

Story

Travis prepares to go outside doing the usual: Filling up gas tanks, mowing lawns, and slicing heads off

Travis Touchdown is an Otaku (a Japanese equivalent of a nerd/geek) who has a Light Saber-Esq beam katana, called Blood Berry, that he won after an online auction. After winning the auction, he runs out of money to buy video games and lucha libre (Mexican wrestling involving mask) videos. He meets a woman named Sylvia Christel (who has blond hair and an accent) who sets Travis up with a job to assassinate a character named Helter Skelter. After doing so, Sylvia tells Travis that he is 11th ranked of the United Assassins Association. Travis makes use for this by asking and promising Sylvia that “When I become #1, will you do it with me?”. She accepts and our main protagonist is out to kill a total of 10 assassins.
It sounds simple but that’s not what matters for there are other things that make this game awesome like slicing up henchmen, street gangs, and criminals.

Gameplay

You are able to walk or ride your motorcycle, the “Schpeltiger”, in a free roaming world. When you are not assassinating, you can be able to dig through trash to find money or T-shirts or find balls and take them to a Russian man who is located at a Japanese-style bar. You could say that it’s similar to that of the 3D Grand Theft Auto games but you do not kill pedestrians and you can not steal cars.

There are two ways to make money quickly. One is by either doing optional part time jobs like filling up gas, mowing the lawn, or cleaning graffiti. The other is going through a list of optional assassination jobs (not part of the UAA) that tell you to kill some henchmen of a fast food restaurant or using a special power up to kill more. By doing these jobs, you will be able to pay for assassin ranked missions, video tapes, clothes, beam katana upgrades, and training sessions. Clothes (T-shirts, pants, belts, coats, and sun glasses) are not a necessary thing to buy but it allows you to customize Travis to your fancy.

During gameplay (in a 3rd person view), when you are fighting against a group or a ranked assassin, you use your Wii remote for combat. You can also use the B button to use wrestling moves when an enemy is unconscious. In order to attack, you press the A button and when an arrow appears, you wave your remote in a direction and Travis will slice the enemy in half either

When he's not busy assassinating he's usually at home, petting his pet cat.

vertical or horizontal. It may sound tedious but it’s quite fun when playing for the first time. To control Travis, you use the Nun chuck. You are able to dodge attacks with the D-pad. This is especially helpful when enemies have attacks that launch energy balls at you or when an assassin is about to charge at you.

As you progress through the game, you will learn new moves and abilities like running quicker and being able to spot enemies on your map. Training in a gym will allow you to get stronger and be able to fight later assassins and henchmen.

Also when roaming in the world, there will be spots where you have the option to accept a mission but be warned that in these missions, if you get hurt once, you failed the mission and you restart from the point where you first accepted the mission.

Music

Let me just say that every assassin/boss battle has unique music playing in the Background, usually fitting the assassin. When fighting against henchmen, the main theme of the game will play unless you are in some power up mode.

This game has music that ranges from Techno, Hard rock, Ambient, to Alternative Rock. So this would mean that while you may not like one song, there are other songs to listen from.

Sound

Sound is very clear and there are a few that sound like it came from an old Atari/NES game (which is only heard when opening the main menu or when saving) while others are the sound of your beam katana swooshing, energetic effects (Again, inspired that of the Light Sabers)

I’m not going to be too detailed about this part but the voices are all in English and they’re not bad. EVEN the Japanese version has the English voices which is strange since you would think Suda 51 (the creator) would have chosen Japanese but he didn’t.

The enemies say lines but it can get somewhat annoying listening to a henchmen/enemy shouting “My spleen!” more than 7 or so times.

This game also makes use for the speakers on the Wii remote. When Travis reaches to an end point of a level, a ring comes out of the little speakers. When answering the call, Sylvia will talk to you through the Wii remote which, I think, is really cool.

Graphics

The graphics of the game are that of cell shading. Similar to Killer 7’s graphics except No More Heroes appears to have more of a comic-like style to it. This means that the character models, buildings, and such have detail to them. In other words, you are able to see detailed shirts, pant folds, and etc.

A few things…

Although I described this game as some form of video game deity, there are some things that I didn’t liked or I thought could have been added.

For one thing, there is little to do in Santa Destroy. It’s purpose is to just let you go from one part of the town to another (this doesn’t include finding goodies and treasure, BTW). When you run over pedestrians, they simply just flinch while still remain standing.

For cloths, I would have liked it if there were not so much T-shirts that had little to no changes except for the color of the shirt. It would of been also neat if you had the option to take your jacket off or even your sunglasses.

After killing a top ranked assassin, there are checkpoints where you can try to earn money. The problem with these missions is that if you get hit once, you’re done and you are back on the main map.

But seeing as how No More Heroes is already being made and developed, they may fix one of the problems I listed like the overworld.

Final

Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who has an interest in hardcore games and/or is an otaku if they don’t mind some small cons. It’s really nice to have a main character that people can relate to.

As if in reply the bed shook again, harder this time. Nathaniel grabbed his blanket and held it tight—the image of Luke Skywalker wrinkled under his firm grip. If only he could pull the lightsaber out of the blanket and use it to defend himself. That would be a sight to see. No one would dare threaten him then.

A sharp pain pierced the back of his neck. His heart stopped. Something was behind him. Perhaps it was a creature from another world, a fuzzy furball, similar to the ones from movies such as Critters and Gremlins. It would chew off his fingers and his mother would find his bloody corpse in the morning. Did he dare turn around and look? Another sharp pain jabbed into his neck and then vanished. Nathaniel’s hand instinctively grasped at the wound. At this rate he was going to die, and slowly, so what difference did it make?

He turned his head and gasped. The end of a tiny crossbow was pointed strait at him, and behind it, the face of a small wookie.

“Wrrrrrrooooow,” it growled, as if taken directly from a Star Wars soundtrack.

This wasn’t his imagination anymore. It was for real. Of all the times he pretended the action figure of Chewbacca was alive, never once did he imagine it would actually happen.

And so the iPhone app avalanche continues. As far as I can tell.

I do not own an iPhone, but I live with someone who does. And I have seen many, many iPhone commercials that showcase that many wonderful iPhone apps. Consider me educated.

I’m not sure whether all of these apps are improving roommate relations though.

When I asked her if she was almost done drying her hair after 45 minutes of trying to study over the drone of the blow dryer, the only reply I got was the humming of a lightsaber from the bathroom. There’s an app for that.

When we asked if she wouldn’t mind loading some of the dishes from the girl’s night bake-a-thon, we did not expect to have a shotgun cocked and fired in our direction. There’s an app for that too.

It gets stranger. There’s even an iPhone woopie cushion, but I can’t really figure out how or why you would want somebody to sit on your iPhone.

Now I’m no scientist. I theorize how cold it is in the morning by experimenting whether or not my tongue will stick to the flagpole. This also determines whether I will have a good day or a bad day. (If you happen to have a cat up a tree, I am friends with many firefighters.)

However, I can theorize that we are approaching an iPhone event horizon, if you will. The point where there is an iPhone app for everything imaginable, and there can be no more iPhone apps invented. This event may bring about the Apocalypse. Just to to be sure I will check the “This Week’s Sign of the Apocalypse” app.

We’ll be getting closer once we get an iPhone app that can cure cancer. The conversation with a doctor will go something like this:

“Well, Mr. Smythe, it’s time for your chemo treatment. Here, hold this.”

“What’s this for?”

“We’ve had too many malpractice suits to afford real radiation machines at the hospital.”

“Is that bad?”

“Very. But I did just download an iPhone app for radiation treatment.”

“Should it be sparking like this?”

“You turned it on already? I wasn’t even out of the room yet!”

*Farting sound*

“Whoops. This must be the woopie cushion app.”

(both laugh)

At any rate, I’m still slaving away at this computer as I write. There’s no iPhone app for WordPress. Yet.

The first time I came to the United States was partly to see Star Wars: The Phantom Menace on its opening weekend. My friends and I positively bubbled with The Force as we were treated to the classic logo, the crawl and the genius of John Williams.

Initially I could even forgive Jar-Jar’s annoying presence, the stilted dialogue, and all the small things that were included to get in the way of the dreamed return of greatness.

Darth Maul was a genuine villain worthy of the saga’s ambition and Liam Neeson mainly pulled off the task of being the Jedi Master who could have prevented all the despair that was to follow, even if the script got in his way at times.

The glow faded away though as time wore on, the flaws became harder to ignore and the next film confirmed that Lucas was too busy playing with new toys at ILM to pay too much attention to character and plot.

"Stand there and act less natural"

The dirge of Attack of The Clones really was horrific and the sporadic successes of Revenge of The Sith couldn;t make up for the ham-necked-fistedness that Lucas brought to his creation.

The 3D extended television episode of The Clone Wars deepened the feeling that a Tauntaun was being flogged post mortem, particularly with the excruciating character Ahsoka Tano who speaks like a 50 year old trying to hang out with their teenage daughter’s friends.

I found myself wondering if I would ever be excited about a Star Wars project again, mainly due to my wife becoming gloriously addicted to the Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga game on the X-Box 360. The game is a lot of fun, particularly the parts dedicated to the original trilogy, I found my Star Wars denial fading only very slightly.

But then, a powerful disturbance occured…

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

The Knights of The Old Republic games were engrossing so when it was announced that Bioware would be teaming with Lucasarts to create an MMO one could say I was intrigued.

Then this trailer was unveiled. Yes it was utterly brilliant and made millions wish the people behind the cinematic had made the films, but as any gamer knows, the great cinematic can often paper over the shoddy game.

However each small sliver of information makes me regress a decade and believe once more that Star Wars will be brought to life in a truly satisfying way.

Each developer video seems to point towards a Star Wars version of Mass Effect except it is online, massively multiplayer and fully voiced. The ability to have a party of friends share in-game conversations with full voice acting for both themselves and the NPCs is staggering in its ambition.

The video here shows some of the breathtaking settings, the focus on storyline and three of the classes that will be available.

Note how the Smuggler has the “Run Up and Kick ‘Em in The Balls” melee attack. Nice.

At one point a Sith Warrior does a Force Charge move, flying a hundred feet at an opponent with lightsaber brandished, attacks his target and then swings the saber round and over his head in order to deflect a blast from between his shoulder blades without taking his focus from the first target.

And once again I am a child and The Force is the coolest thing ever invented.
