I.    Requirements :

To create a lightscribe image compatible with a LightScribe duplicator, you need :

1.    A computer running Windows XP (It’s possible also on Mac or Linux, but the software delivered with the duplicator is compatible with Microsoft © Windows) plus a CD-RW or DVD-RW drive
2.    For Windows XP , you’ll also need the LightScribe Host Software ( you can get it from http://download.lightscribe.com/ls/LS_Update_1.18.5.1_.exe . For Vista, you don’t need to install this additional software.
3.    The LightScribe software CD that was delivered with your duplicator.

II.    Step by step :

El HP Pavilion dv3, presentado en el CES, llega ahora a España. Lo hace como un equipo bastante portable pero con suficiente potencia para funciones multimedia e, incluso para jugar con él, además de un diseño bastante cuidado.

Hablando del diseño, habrá disponibles dos modelos distintos, uno en color blanco, el Moonlight Imprint, y uno en color negro, el Espresso. Ambos ofrecen una pantalla panorámica de 13.3 pulgadas iluminada con LEDs y una tarjeta gráfica Nvidia GeForce G105M, junto a procesadores Intel.

El HP Pavilion dv3 ya está a la venta en España con un precio de 699 euros y con el sistema operativo Windows Vista. Aby móc drukować obrazki na płytkach lightscribe potrzebujemy 2 rzeczy:

Sterownika i programu

Pobieramy je, następnie instalujemy alien:

sudo apt-get install alien

Następnie wchodzimy do katalogu w którym mamy paczkę ze sterownikiem:

u mnie to pulpit i wygląda to tak:

cd /home/krzychu/Pulpit

tworzymy paczke .deb:

sudo alien -d lightscribe-1.8.15.1-linux-2.6-intel.rpm

i instalujemy dwuklikiem, zainstalowaliśmy sterownik.

Teraz pora na program, wystarczy go rozpakować i wrzucić do systemu plików, potwierdzając połączenie folderów, następnie aktywator robimy z prawami roota:

gksudo 4L-gui

Vroeger een groot fan geweest van Split Enz. Die hadden een elpee, True Colors, die was aan de afspeelkant met een laser ingekleurd en getekend. Dat had ik me bedacht bij Lightscribe.

Dus ik wandelen naar de MediaMarkt en schaf 5 dvd+r’s  aan met Lightscribe oppervlak.

Ik open Cyberlink DVD Suite Deluxe, en kies voor de optie labels afdrukken via Lightscribe. Ik componeer afbeeldingen en zet de brander aan het printen. Dat duurt 20 minuten, maar het was ook een kleurrijk geheel geworden:

Ik dus meteen op internet kijken of ik een instelling gemist had, of ik een firmware update moest hebben, want ereg kleurrijk kon ik het resultaat niet noemen. Ik heb zo eens wat rondgeneusd, maar nu snap ik waarom je -hoewel het toch al een paar jaar bestaat- nooit iemand over deze techniek hoort praten.

Dus ik kies nu als afbeelding een nóg kleurrijker affiche van mijn eigen hand. Dát moet echt fraai worden:

Ik denk als je gewoon in strak zwart/wit werkt je een fraaie “druk” krijgt, en er schijnen gekleurde dvd’s te zijn die een mooiere afdruk garanderen. Er is overigens een van het Lightscribe afgeleide methode ontwikkeld, maar ook die zal het niet worden:

One of the expectations when one shoots a wedding or any other event is that your product will look “professional”. What I mean is that you really can not hand out a DVD of a 3,500 dollar wedding with the title scrawled on it in sharpie ink. Well, you could  but I doubt you would get much word of mouth referrals.  We photographers are always are looking for a way to be professional in our presentation, or we should be as it is a simple thing that can really separate you from the rest.

So with this in mind, I picked up a Lightscribe DVD burner to play with some. For those that do not know what Lightscribe is, pay attention, it is a pretty cool idea. You take a DVD and make it burnable on both sides. But the label side is set to  be a high contrast burn so you can burn an image and text into the label side and  have it viewable. Cool idea huh?  Yeah, I thought so too. It’s still a cool idea but not nearly as much as so as in the beginning.

I got my drive from OWC, a Superwrite Master DVD external burner. It arrived and was unpacked and plugged into the Macbook Pro ASAP. Hey!! not so fast cowboy!!! I could not see the drive with the Lightscribe labeling software. Ahh, so says the instructions, NO FIREWIRE. You can only burn Lightscribe using USB. Ugh.. So unplug it and replug it with USB. Now I take my special Lightscribe DVD (oh yes, special media if you want the label) and stick it in the drive. Turns out the software is just a driver and the label software is something I already bought that supports the Lightscribe driver/disk. Here is another dirty secret, Lightscribe only supplies a driver to the OEMs so the OEM has to come up with the software. In the case of Lacie, it’s ALL special which means you can only get support from Lacie which Lightscribe admits to on their site.

So I get the DiskCover software set up and make a new label. I insert my DVD and tell it to burn the Lightscribe label. And I wait.. and wait and wait some more. It takes 20 minutes to burn a single disk’s label. Not exactly what I wanted for my work flow for anything more than a single off disk. Damn.. It makes a very cool label but god, it takes FOREVER to burn it. When you can burn the disk in 5 to 10 minutes and it takes 20 just for the label, making a coaster by mistake really hurts the time line.

I still use it but only for special cases. And I’m still shopping around for a place that can print decent silk screened DVDs without breaking the bank in very small runs. I’ve tried inkjet DVDs and while they work, I am hoping for something a bit more professional  than the inkjet. Still, it’s faster than Lightscribe and its in color. I just give them a quick coat of photo sealer to keep the ink from running and call it a day.

Because a lot of our clients are using Windows XP and they encountered a lot of problems , I decided to make this short tutorial about saving LightScribe images good to use with your duplicator.

1.First of all, before installing the LightScribe software, please make sure you log out of your user and login as Administrator, otherwise you will encounter issues with the LightScribe Host Drivers .

2.Insert the CD you received with the duplicator, in the optical drive of your computer, and run LightScribe Setup_ IDESelected_ v20.exe

3.Check I Accept, click Next , enter your identification details and the product key (you find it printed on the disc) , click Next.

4.Next windows shows you two panels with drive models. On the left there are the supported drives, on the right panel you have the drives you selected (“your selected drives”). Remove everything from the right panel, excepting the DVD LightScribe burner model that your duplicator has ( in this case, you will leave there only the LG GH22LP20.IDE 162). If you are not sure that your drives are LG GH22LP20, you can ask our tech support, but at least for the moment, the LightScribe towers are shipped with this model, LG GH22LP20 because it has no compatibility issues with the controller card. Then click Install.

5.While installing, other small programs will install too (the LightScribe host software, the actual LightScribe service that is needed in order to be able to burn LSI images.
When everything is installed, please restart your computer and run LightScribe Template Labeler .

6. In the first screen of LightScribe Template Labeler, select a template for your disc. When everything is done, click Next > . On the second screen, you can customize the template as you wish, add pictures , add text. When everything is done, click Preview and Print .

7.Another window will pop up , the LightScribe Print Options. Chose your contrast level and disk background, and then click Print. You will get a window called “LightScribe image (.lsi) file destination folder . Navigate to the location in your computer where you want to save your image file, type the name of the image file, and click Save.

8.For the next step, you will need to burn the image file you just created to a blank disc. Do that using any burning program, and burn the .lsi file as any other data .

9.Insert the disc you just created in your duplicator’s source drive (usually the first drive, counting up to down) , then make sure that drive is selected as Source drive ( navigate through your duplicator’s menu to the Select Source option , and chose Channel 00 ) .

10.Navigate to second option ( Print ) , press ENT, then the name of the lsi file will be shown on the duplicator’s display. Confirm the selection by pressing ENT , and then you’ll get the “Waiting for blanks” message . Insert ONLY LightScribe discs, with the label side facing down (so the data side facing up, backward as you usually insert a disc into a drive) , and again confirm with ENT.

11.The printing process will start.

I hope this will help most of the people who encountered problems with the LightScribe technology drivers over Windows XP.
