oh my lawd

Hearty post-gym breakfast. Needed the colours of the rainbow to replenish the calories I burnt.

Reds: goji berries, tomatos
Greens: broccolli, Chinese leaves / napa cabbage, spring onions, wakame
Yellows: egg, tofu puffs
Grey: oyster mushrooms
White: ramen

The broth was a rich concoction of red miso, dashi, soy sauce, mirin, black pepper, white pepper, chilli flakes.

And don’t forget to eat it straight out of the pan. Who needs bowls?

Inside my head I shrugged my shoulders and replied, “Hell if I know! You remember you are being raised by a single mom right?” Instead I told her usually when a boy likes you he talks to you about anything/everything unimportant and he will find a way to be near you all because he wants your attention.

Later, we were at an awards banquet at her school and all the kids were outside taking pictures on their androids and I-Phones. The parents left the children to their fun and talked amongst themselves. Out the corner of my eye I noticed several girls running and screaming followed by group of boys laughing and high five-ing each other. I casually walk over to observe and what do I see? Three little boys run up and kiss The Major all at once. My jaw dropped and before I could go over and snatch up the little hooligans I see The Major slap two of the boys across the face and punch the other one dead-center in his chest. My jaw drop turned into a smile.

One little boy stayed there apologizing to The Major. I inched closer so I could get a better listen at what was being said and I guess it turned out to be a bet amongst the group of boys to see how many girls they could kiss for the night. Cute, but typical boy stuff.

The biggest surprise and also my proudest moment of the night came when The Major told the boy, “Look, I’ll be the one to help you keep count but I am not the one use in your little bet. Got it?” The boy nervously nods his head and walked off as I walked up.

“Major! What was that all about?” I asked.
She said, “Oh just these immature boys acting stupid. But I handled it.”
“I see,” I replied and laughed and told her to get ready to come back inside the school.

Later on back at home, The Major informed me that the boy she checked is the boy she likes and was wondering how to tell if he liked her back.
“So do you think he likes you?” I asked.
She said, “Yes, but not for the reasons you gave me. I am pretty sure he likes me because he does whatever I tell him to do just like all the other boys who like me.”

I was speechless. I have no idea where she gets this stuff from but it made sense to her so I let her have it. However I did leave her with final question, “So if someone doesn’t do exactly what you say do you think that means they don’t care about you?” She hesitantly said no but I know I gave her something to think about and myself too. I wondered how much of my own reasoning about men and relationships came from my earliest experiences with boys?

To The Major’s defense her logic was not far off. If every other boy who had ever liked her let her boss them around then it made sense to assume that any boy who allowed her to boss him around also liked her. Her limited experience with boys limited her rationale. Accordingly, has my experience with boys aka “men” also limited my understanding of the opposite sex? Am I still using my junior high school judgment to know if a man likes me or not? Well, that’s a new one for me to reflect upon as I try to teach The Major that a person can still care for you and not follow your orders and that relationships are built on mutual respect and when you respect someone you respect the choices they make whether you like them or not.

However, I don’t want to utter all of that to The Major just yet. She just may try to use that against me and tell me she doesn’t have to do what I tell her to do and if I respect her then I have to respect her decisions. Unfortunately that principle only applies to people who pay their own bills and buy their own underwear. But I will slowly get her there.
