You may know this lady from her work with Madonna (“Like a Prayer,” anyone?). Mary Lambert’s video work tapered off by the mid-1990s, as she transitioned into features like Pet Semetary. She’s also worked on documentaries, and I fully intend to rent 14 Women, a 2007 title she directed about the 109th Congress, which featured a woefully unprecedented 14 female Senators. The first two Madonna albums are perfectly lovely garage pop.

Coming out of New York City in the early ’80s, Madonna struck upon a time when a robust dance scene melded the best New Wave and disco influences. She could pull from them all as she set about turning the music industry on its ear.

Madonna’s big influence for New Wave hooks in low-fi, high-dance pop music came from Debbie Harry and Blondie, who had called it quits with their album The Hunter a year before Madonna released her self-titled debut in 1983. Reggie Lucas produced that album but renowned DJ John “Jellybean” Benitez wowed the dance floor with his production on “Holiday” and his remixing elsewhere.

The second album really takes the sounds of the first to another level, thanks largely to the production work of Nile Rodgers of CHIC, who had produced perhaps the most amazing pop album of all time–David Bowie’s Last Dance–at this point.

For years, my favorite song off Like A Virgin was “Material Girl,” but even during that time, I couldn’t help but think of “Dress You Up” whenever the album came up. The combination of the New Wave synth and the funky guitar played by Rodgers himself makes the song an incredibly irresistible classic.

Producers today could take some lessons from Rodgers and stop overproducing crap to the point where it is nothing more than a collection of shrill bells and whistles. Instead, you could arrange actual instruments in such a way that they simply roll out a pleasing dance number–pure and simple.

Lo cierto es que no hay en las Escrituras ninguna base para esta creencia basada an las obras apócrifas de los siglos III y IV según la cual el cuerpo y el alma de la Virgen María fueron llevados al cielo después de terminar sus días en la tierra. Debido a la influencia del libro llamado el Seudo-Jerónimo el cual ponía en duda si María fue asunta al cielo con o sin su cuerpo (aunque manteniendo la creencia en su incorrupción)  se produjo un  debate sobre la asunción corporal de la virgen. Finalmente se aceptó la asunción corporal de María gracias a textos como el tratado Ad Interrogata, atribuido a San Agustín, el cual aceptaba la asunción corporal de María, y el posicionamiento a favor de Santo Tomás de Aquino y otros grandes teólogos. Pío V en el siglo XVI al reformar el Breviario quitó las citas del “Seudo-Jerónimo” y las sustituyó por otras que defendían la asunción corporal, que fue definida como dogma (verdad de la que no puede dudarse) por el Papa Pío XII el 1 de noviembre de 1950.

Uno de los períodos en los que más se fomentó el culto a la Virgen fue el siglo XIII con la aparición del libro de Santiago de la Vorágine la Leyenda Dorada, que se convirtió en un libro de consulta muy conocido entre los artistas. En él se narra como mientras los apóstoles estaban sentados junto a la tumba de la Virgen, tres dias después de su muerte, se les apareció Cristo acompañado de San Miguel, que llevaba con él el alma de la Virgen “Y al momento el alma volvió al cuerpo de María, y salió gloriosamente de la tumba, y fue recibida en la cámara celestial, y con ella una gran comitiva de ángeles”. La Asunción comenzó a representarse con profusión en la escultura gótica del s.XIII, especialmente en los pórticos de las iglesias dedicadas a la Virgen. Su forma característica (composición a base de dos o tres elementos superpuestos) se encuentra en el Renacimiento y se ha ido repitiendo posteriormente.

También necesitó la ayuda de los ángeles María Magdalena cuando en su retiro montañoso y solitario cerca de Saint-Baume, donde  pasó treinta años de penitencia y de ayuno , “siete veces al día bajaban unos ángeles que la subían hasta el cielo, donde se le permitía atisbar la dicha futura” según nos narra  la Leyenda Dorada de Vorágine.

Asunción de María Magdalena

Dejando a parte la teología, no se puede obviar la influencia que la Antigua Grecia y sus diosas paganas deberían haber ejercido en el hecho de representar a estas santas mujeres elevándose por los cielos. Ya lo hizo en su momento Medea, no rodeada de ángeles, sino de fuego y en un carro del diós Helios (el Sol) tirado por dragones o la Calisto, convertida en constelación. Ahora tenemos nuevas diosas y santas a las que adorar:

Santa Barbie  tampoco precisa de la ayuda de los ángeles para subir al cielo y su música celestial en vez de a cantos gregorianos o música de órgano más bien suena a Like a Virgin de Madonna.

Este Miércoles me acordé del Concurso que realiza LomoSpain todos los meses, el Spanish LomoCovers.

Siempre me gusta ver la foto ganadora y las que seleccionan para el slide.

Este mes me gustaba mucho el tema: “pintando con luz, dibujando rayos, creando fulgores, jugando con incasdescencias, escribiendo con destellos”… Es uno de mis temas recurrentes. Incluso a veces creo que abuso un poco del Bulb!

Mi sorpresa fue encontrarme con una Lomo mía en el slide, de nuevo. Esta es la tercera vez. Da mucha alegría ver que se han fijado. Y concretamente en esa. Son de esas Lomos que yo llamo inimaginables. Cuando recoges el negativo y te dispones a escanearlo, no esperas una foto así.

Dos fotos que las “medio montas” y la siguiente que la haces al día después. 12 horas de diferencia entre una y otra y al final coordinan muy bien, a mi parecer.

Es un gusto compartir slide con unas Lomos tan buenas. Este mes el Ganad@r fue Mckenzye (JMSAINZ en el Flickr). Sencillamente me encantó. Una Diana muy buena!!! El resto están también para verlas. Muy interesantes todas .

Madonna, Part.1

Je ne connais pas la femme, mais j’aime beaucoup l’artiste interprète, sa carrière, et le staff dont elle s’entoure et qui lui font sortir de purs tubes.

God knows, Madonna’s virginity probably ended about the same time as the Nixon regime,…errr…presidency, so there could be some angst. But according to the Material Girl, she would need somewhere in the neighborhood of $30 million to perform either Like A Virgin or Holiday, again. What an arrogant though from Madge!

Let me assure you, in my opinion, no matter how much I used to want to bang her in the 80’s, there isn’t a chance in hell I would want to see her Crypt Keeper looking self in the clothes from either of the videos. She was hot then, she ain’t now.

However, I also don’t understand why she would so hate these two songs. Or maybe, she just hates looking at the sea of middle aged, saggy, people who were there in the beginning? You know, those of use who made her rich? Maybe, she can recall how long ago she was like a virgin. I know, from this videos, I forgot how hot she USED to be when we were both much younger!

I think she has also tried to forget that in some ways she’s forgotten that she was a voice in our generation. While most of the music she did was completely commercial, how many of us can remember Crazy for You as an anthem for some teen relationship?

I don’t care what Ms Ciccone thinks, however, I still like the songs and the memories they recall, especially of a particularly hot girl a year ahead of me in high school, some 25 years ago. She was the one Crazy for You was for!

1985 was Madonna’s annus mirabilis, barely a week passing without a saucy New York dance-pop nugget brightening up the UK charts. She bagged eight Top 5 hits, including bona fide breakthrough ‘Like A Virgin’, ‘Holiday’ recharting 18 months after its initial Top 10 appearance, first No.1 ‘Into The Groove’ and the utterly forgotten ‘Angel’. Try and sing it, go on. So the slutty Material Girl angle was all sewn up; now it was time for the serious artiste.

We’d already had the ever-so-earnest ‘Live To Tell’, but ‘Papa Don’t Preach’ was the big one. A rather less trashy tackling of her Catholic guilt than ‘Like A Virgin’, it was real, honest and oddly – paradoxically – innocent. Dramatic too. ‘Like A Prayer’ would scare the horses, but ‘Papa Don’t Preach’ is the raw truth. Madonna was still fresh and unpredictable and winningly rounded too, not the skin-smeared Terminator we blanch at today.

Taken purely at face value, ‘Papa…’ is an easy singalong, but Junior might just have seen it as an oblique way of telling me to shut up. We can salute creativity like that. We also found the song good for call and response – “Papa preach?” “Papa DON’T preach!”

Pressed on the actual quality of the record, Junior declared it “good.” A future in music journalism awaits.

Drinks are on Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The only problem is, no matter how many of them you chug, the only place they’ll get you is bathroom. And not even to puke but to pee.

Yes, MADD is planning to release a range of alcohol-free beverages. (Funny how you can go from heaven to hell just by switching words around. Observe: “Free Alcohol” = Paradise / “Alcohol Free” = The Fiery Pits.) The line of beverages will include non-alcoholic mojitos (every time you say ‘non-alcoholic mojito’ a Hemingway dies), margaritas, piña coladas, beer, red wine, white wine and sparkling wines, and shall be christened MADD Virgin Drinks. (Whence the tunes at the top of the page to serenade you.)

Here at the Bar None we don’t get MADD, we get even. The following is a line of drinks DAMM (Drunks Against Mad Mothers) & D.R.I.N.K.E.R (Drunks Really Involved, Now Known as Exiles Reunited) plan to unleash on the general public in the not so near future. The products are designed to seem like virgin drinks, but in fact pack quite a punch. That way, you can drink them in any social situation where booze is unwelcome. You’ll note the cocktails have been named in honor of MADD.

The Rear Ender

Take a Passion juice (Star fruit works really well, mango too, in a pinch) and lace it with rum (use lots of lace). Serve in a juice glass or juice box.

This is a good drink for breakfast and a nice way to gaily start your day.

Side-Swiped

Open a can of Dr Pepper, drink 1/3 and fill it back up with gin. (White alcohols are hardest to detect on the breath.)

Drink this while you’re at work. Work is sobering. Sobering is bad.

Head On Collision

Empty an entire bottle of mineral and refill it with 1/3 white tequila, 1/3 gin and 1/3 vodka.

A good drink after (or during) effort of any kind. Note: family reunions and talks with the spouse count as ‘effort’. You pro’lly won’t be able to finish it but, then again, you pro’lly won’t need to.

Esse clássico da carreira da Madonna, e dos anos 80, faz parte do segundo álbum de inéditas da cantora, o “Like a Virgin”, lançado em 1984. A faixa título, “Material Girl” e “Into the Groove” (apenas nas versões européia e japonesa do disco) se tornaram hinos da rainha do pop.

A canção, injustamente, ficou um pouco “esquecida” na memória do público em geral. Mesmo sendo tão ou mais sensacional que “Like a Virgin”.

Na segunda parte da “Sticky & Sweet Tour”, realizada em 2009, Madonna trocou “Borderline” por “Dress You Up“. Ótima escolha!

Oggi ad un Presidente (un po’) abbronzato, e sorridente come solo lui sa essere, è stato assegnato il Premio Nobel per la Pace. WOW! Per il nostro Presidente del consiglio di premi e di pace neanche a parlarne, azzoppato com’è dalla decisione della Corte Costituzionale di cancellare il Lodo Alfano, sul quale faceva affidamento per legittimare la sua condizione di SuperUomo, di Dio delle libertà, di “lei non sa chi sono io” de’ noialtri insomma. 

Il povero Silvio non riesce proprio a farsene una ragione: il Popolo lo ha eletto, i giudici non possono ribaltare il volere del Popolo. Qualcuno ha già cercato di fargli presente che così infatti non è, solo ora è stato un tantino riportato il suo status al livello degli altri popolani. Disdetta! Ma del resto saranno proprio loro a salvarlo.

Gli elettori di Silvio Berlusconi sono per lui una “virginity soap” personalizzata. Torneranno a premiarlo, ci scommetterei. Il prossimo slogan della sua campagna elettorale potrebbe essere “Più virginity soap per tutti”, confidando che abbia una funzionalità estendibile ai vari orifizi, non per una questione di femminismo eh!

True story: I got a karaoke machine for my 21st birthday because I had a penchant for getting up on the table in our apartment during my junior year of college and drunkenly belting out Scissor Sisters and Franz Ferdinand and the final number from Hairspray.  It really was a great gift, if for no other reason than that it prevented the inevitable trip to the emergency room when my drunk ass attempted a high kick and fell off the table.  As I recall, the karaoke machine looked like this:

I spent most of the evening of my birthday party karaoking to my copy of U2’s recently leaked How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, and while this was tolerable during “Vertigo,” it was not flying by the time I was taking a shot at “Love and Peace or Else.”  At one point, a friend of a friend at the party even gave me what I thought to be a stink eye during my performance, but that could’ve been all those birthday cocktails talking.

ANYWAYS, I was finally persuaded to take on something a little more crowd pleasing.  Naturally this translates to “putting on your drag costume from Halloween and singing ‘Like a Virgin’.”  I’m pretty certain the end result–coming from a combination of drunkface and inability to find a proper pitch–sounded like a tranquilized cat warbling for mating call.  It.  Was.  BLEAK.

After that, I always thought that nobody could ever do any worse, but then I saw this demo video from an aborted American Idol karaoke arcade game (which is obviously something the world really needed but will now never have).  I was obviously wrong:

I’m sorry, I should’ve warned you to shove cotton balls in your ears so the torrents of blood now pouring out of your ears wouldn’t get all over everything, but WHOOPS, I guess misery loves company.  Fortunately, though, there are still things we can glean from this video.  

Firstly, “Like a Virgin” karaoke is clearly an excellent barometer for figuring out if a guy is straight.  No self-respecting gay would ever let something like this happen, let alone post it on the internet.  And secondly, so long as I remember this shit show, I can karaoke with confidence.  

So if you’re ever in New York City, and you think you hear a heavily sedated cat howling out for a mate, you might want to check the nearby karaoke bars before you call animal control.  Chances are it’s just me.

Cette semaine, ou la dernière, ou la prochaine, je ne sais plus, Madonna sort un Best of monstre, intitulé Celebration, pour fêter ses soixante ans de carrière (et accessoirement aussi parce que c’était marqué sur son contrat avec Warner). Et vu que je suis le Pédé de la bande, je ne peux décemment pas me permettre de passer à coté de cette célébration de l’icône ultime de tous les homosexuels, des confins de l’Ouzbékistan à la pointe du Cap Horn.

Alors je vous propose une rétrospective chronologique de la carrière de la dame, en trois parties, parce que sa carrière est presque aussi longue que celle de Valéry Giscard d’Estaing.

1958: Madonna Louise Ciccone naît à Bay City, dans le Michigan.

1963: Sa mère meurt prématurément alors qu’elle n’a que 5 ans. Ses futurs biographes prennent note.

1963-1982: Des trucs sans intérêt ont lieu: école, adolescence, débarquage à New York, débuts difficiles; la routine.

1983: Pendant que le monde se remet du disco avec une sévère gueule de bois, Madonna débarque -le cheveu en pétard, de la dentelle rapiécée sur le dos, une jupe par-dessus ses leggings ou ses bas résilles, et recouverte d’assez de crucifix et de verroterie pour fournir une demi-douzaine de brocantes spécialisées en bijoux fantaisie- avec son premier album sobrement intitulé Madonna. Holiday casse la baraque (et restera son hymne national), suivi par le très drôle Borderline et l’inoxydable Lucky Star. Un million d’années plus tard, force est de reconnaître que ce premier album est un assez irrésistible concentré de son pop-dance eighties, et qu’en ces temps de revival années 80, il a plutôt très bien vieilli, pour peu qu’on se délecte des sonorités d’improbables synthés et autres boites à rythmes crépitantes.
Mon choix: le très rock’n'roll Burning Up, et Think of Me, idéal pour une séance d’aérobic.

1984: Madonna débarque aux premiers MTV Video Music Awards et entonne Like a Virgin, vêtue d’une robe de mariée spécialement conçue pour faire le tapin, perchée en haut d’un gâteau, puis se roule par terre en couinant. Et en passant, entre dans l’histoire, et devient la femme la plus connue du monde. Britney Spears, qui a trois ans à l’époque, prend note. La chanson devient son titre phare et l’une des plus célèbres de l’histoire la pop, et l’album Like a Virgin sort dans la foulée. Comme la jeune fille n’aime pas s’entourer de manchots, elle a choisi Nile Rodgers, leader de Chic -qui vient tout juste de produire les blockbusters Diana pour Diana Ross et Let’s Dance pour Bowie- pour le lui confectionner. Carton plein. L’ironie du second single, Material Girl, passe inaperçue, et le surnom lui collera à la peau jusqu’à la mort. Malgré quelques titres inutiles (Love Don’t Live Here Anymore) ou grotesques (Over and Over), l’album demeure un classique pop incontournable.
Mon choix: Dress You Up, imbattable pic de kitsch bariolé, aussi jouissif au premier qu’au douzième degré.

1985: Madonna tient son premier rôle au cinéma dans l’amusante comédie Recherche Susan Désespérément. Elle est éclipsée par son blouson, mais se rattrape en chantant la chanson originale du film, Into The Groove, probablement un des titre les plus implacablement dansants ce côté-ci de Michael Jackson. Puis elle se marie avec Sean Penn. Je sais, ça parait dingue aujourd’hui, hein?

1986: Madonna sort True Blue. 24 millions de personnes l’achètent. Ou 12 millions de personnes l’achètent deux fois. Quoi qu’il en soit, c’est un succès. Madonna a grandi (ou mûri comme on dit dans le jargon musical), lâché ses oripeaux de punkette, s’est fait couper les cheveux courts, et le public suit en masse. L’album, tel un Dr. Jekyll et Mister Hyde musical, se divise entre cinq singles monstres -Live to Tell, probablement sa meilleure ballade de la décennie; l’immortel Papa Don’t Preach; l’énérgique Open Your Heart; l’effervescent True Blue; l’indéboulonnable La Isla Bonita- et le reste, composé de titres bâclés et inaudibles qui constituent sans doute le pire de sa discographie. Dans le même temps, Madonna et Sean, voulant jouer à Humphrey Bogart et Lauren Bacall, se compromettent dans un mirifique navet, Shanghai Surprise, et nous mettent dans un embarras profond.

1987: Pas échaudée par son Razzie Award de la pire actrice de l’année, Madonna s’enfonce avec Who’s That Girl, dans lequel elle se prend cette fois très malencontreusement pour Judy Holliday, mais n’arrive même pas au niveau de Melanie Griffith. Elle fait une Tom Hanks, remportant un second Razzie Award consécutif. La GÊNE.

1988: Madonna soigne son orgueil blessé. Puis divorce.

1989: Madonna est un femme. Elle sort Like a Prayer et surprend tout le monde, montrant qu’elle a ce qu’il faut pour durer. La chanson titre, sublime mélange de pop, rock et gospel, est accompagnée d’un clip plutôt gentillet dans lequel elle fait un bisou à un Jesus Noir. Les vieux croûtons du Vatican s’étranglent avec leur osties, et les minables qui dirigent Pepsi annulent le contrat publicitaire sur lequel ils s’étaient engagé avec la star, préférant perdre leurs sous que garder leur culotte. Le reste du monde écoute l’album, kaléidoscope de titres imparables aux sonorités éclectiques dans lequel Madonna, pour la première fois, semble vraiment parler d’elle. Le monde se demande si elle ne serait pas une artiste.

1990: N’ayant pas compris que la musique lui réussit mieux que le cinéma, Madonna couche avec Warren Beatty, qui semble lui-même embarrassé par la situation, puis tourne dans son adaptation très colorée de Dick Tracy, où elle interprète une chanteuse de cabaret, et de belles chanson de Stephen Sondheim. L’aspect cartoon limite les dégâts, d’autant qu’un Pacino en plein délire désintègre tout ce qui tente d’exister sur un rayon de vingt kilomètres. (L’expérience Madonna aura néanmoins sévèrement traumatisé le célibataire endurci et niqueur légendaire Beatty, qui s’est empressé après coup d’épouser Annette Bening et de lui fait quatre enfants en à peu près vingt minutes.) Maligne, Madonna sort un album entier inspiré par le film, I’m Breathless, dans lequel elle parodie comme une idiote le style musical des années 40-50, et qui ne serait qu’une vaste fumisterie si le dernier titre du disque n’était une sorte de bombe nucléaire appelée Vogue -dont David Fincher tire un clip légendaire inspiré par les stars du Golden Age que la garce pille sans vergogne depuis toujours- prouvant qu’un disque de Madonna n’est jamais un achat inutile.

Elle embraye avec le Blonde Ambition Tour, éléphantesque cirque ambulant dans lequel elle simule des relations sexuelles avec un lit. Le Pape, toujours aussi à la page, incite les chrétiens à ne pas assister au concert. Les chrétiens s’en cognent et y vont.

Madonna clôt la décennie avec son premier Best of, joliment titré The Immaculate Collection, qui contient une merveille élégamment érotique concoctée avec Lenny Kravitz, Justify My Love, dont le clip réalisé par Mondino, qui contient des bouts de fesses et de nichons, fait scandale, et devient le tout premier à être interdit sur MTV. Pas impressionnée, la Diva le sort en VHS, et fait un nouveau carton. Épuisant.

Ve lo dico io di che parla “Like a virgin”. Parla di una figa che scopa come una matta a destra e a sinistra, giorno e notte, mattina e sera. Cazzocazzo cazzocazzo cazzocazzo cazzocazzo cazzo.

Finché un bel giorno incontra un tipo cazzuto alla John Holmes e allora vai alla grande! Cioè, uno che con l’attrezzo ci scava i tunnel, come Charles Bronson nella grande fuga. Lei ci da dentro come una maiala, finché sente una roba che non sentiva da un secolo: dolore… Dolore. Le fa male! Le fa male… Non dovrebbe, perché la strada e bell’e che asfaltata ormai, ma quando il tipo la pompa, le fa male. Lo stesso dolore che sentì la prima volta, capite? Il dolore fa ricordare alla scopatrice folle le sensazioni di quando era ancora vergine… E quindi, “Like a virgin”!

Teen queen Miley Cyrus continues to pull out all the stops when performing her smash hit “Party In the USA” — this time on VH1’s DIVA program. Unfortunately, she didn’t whip out the goods until later because her first performance was an absolute disaster (below).

Between the top hat clad dancers and gothic wedding dress (?) I couldn’t help but wonder if Miley was going all Madonna “Like A Virgin” on us. All that was missing, really, was the cake.

I’ve gotta say Miley, country-rock suits you. Stick with it!
