Some say you never get a second chance to make a first impression. 50 Cent was on that train of thought when making his debut single, 1999’s “How to Rob.” Then, the grimy Jamaica, Queens, MC was signed to TrackMasters/Columbia Records and prepping his solo debut, Power of the Dollar. Although the LP never came out, “How to Rob” dropped on the In Too Deep movie soundtrack, in August of that year. It wasn’t a hit, but it did become a staple on NYC’s late-night mixshows, gaining much industry and street notoriety for its threatening content.

“How to Rob”feat. The Madd Rapper

(Right click, “Save Target As”)

Recorded in the spring of 1999 at three New York City studios (the Hit Factory, The Cutting Room and The Lion’s Den) and released to the streets via New York’s Hot 97 soon after, the fiery debut single took aim at more than 25 established celebrities, relieving most of them of their cash and jewels. A jab at Mariah Carey, who was divorcing her then-husband, Columbia Records president Tommy Mottola, stirred so much controversy before the record’s release that it had to be pulled from the original version. (“I’ll manhandle Mariah, like, ‘Bitch, get on the ground/You ain’t with Tommy no more, who gonna protect you now?’”)

The Madd Rapper, a comedic act and MC alias of former Bad Boy producer Deric “D-Dot” Angelettie, was added to the song’s hook for levity, saying, “This ain’t serious/Being broke can make you delirious/So we rob and steal so our ones can be bigger/50 Cent, how it feel to rob an industry, nigga?” That helped cushion the blow, but folks still caught feelings. Several rappers fired back, most notably Jay-Z, who spit his response onstage at the 1999 Hot 97 Summer Jam, rapping, “I’m about a dollar, what the fuck is 50 cents?”

Still, the track hit hard and sparked both love and contempt for 50. While he eventually achieved mega rap stardom with his real solo debut, 2003’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’, hip-hop heads will always remember the first big 50 Cent song. To mark the 10th anniversary of his official arrival, XXL took a trip down memory alley to reminisce on one of hip-hop’s greatest heists.

50 Cent: Writing the song was my idea. I wrote the lyrics in pieces. It wasn’t just random. People came to mind based on what rhymes. Once I was able to say it in different orders, I said the verse to Rich Nice. Before I brought it to him, I’d been doing it over a Beanie Sigel beat, other tracks. I was just playing with the concept in my head… It wasn’t hard to come up with the concept of robbery, when you’re not in a great financial space. It kind of felt like I was being rejected during that time, while I was trying to make music. And after it got even worse. I was doing what [rappers] were afraid to do at that point… They were actually afraid to mention each other’s names, because Biggie and Tupac had kinda gotten out of hand… [When] Rich heard the lyrics, the whole song was done. I laid both of the verses, and then it was time for us to record the chorus. He got D-Dot…to create clarity, to show that it wasn’t a dead-serious attack at them. Without D-Dot, it was straight robbery lines. There was nothing that said whether you dead serious or you ain’t… I kinda went after everybody who was relevant, and it was really like doing my own [version of Biggie’s] “Dreams of Fuckin’ an R&B Bitch.”

Rich Nice, A&R for Columbia Records, for Power of the Dollar: The label had no idea about the record. [We had been] trying to do it under the radar, ’cause, at the time, I kinda felt that the building would be against it and be like, “Nah, don’t make that kind of song… We want him to be serious rapper.” [But] the song was intended to be lighthearted, [not] to go at everybody and piss everybody off.

Deric “D-Dot” Angelettie, Brooklyn beatmaster, former member of Bad Boy’s Hitman production team, MC known as The Madd Rapper: I didn’t even know 50 Cent. We both were on Columbia Records… One night, I get a call from Rich Nice… He said he had this record that he really needed my help on. I was like, “Man, I’m about to go home… You gotta get here in a few minutes.” He got there real quick, put on the record, and I was like, “Man, this shit is hot.” It reminded me of Big, but his angle was perfect. I definitely wanted to get on, and I told Rich, “Just tell son that he gonna have some problems, though. But I’m with it.” I felt like, if I got on it, it would lessen the blow. Plus, if I make it funny, it’ll almost look like he’s my artist, even though he wasn’t. I did the hook right then and laid it down. Rich loved it and took it back. He called me up two days later, like, “Everybody loved it,” and they were putting it out.

Rich Nice: One day I was in the office, and I got a call from Donnie Ienner [then Chairman of Sony/Columbia]: “Come to my office right now… It’s about the 50 song.” I go up to the office, and they’re just like, “You gotta take Mariah’s name out.” And I’m just like, “Ooohhhh, shit!” Cory Rooney called and was like, “The name has to come out. They’re really upset about it.” I’m like, “It’s just a line, one line.” I call Fif, and Fif says, “See, that’s that bullshit.” But he changed [it]. I’m being nice when I say how upset [Mariah] was—like, absolutely enraged.

Cory Rooney, former senior executive vice president of Sony: The whole bane of [Mariah’s] existence is to be accepted by Black people…because she’s half-White, half-Black. She looks White, and everybody felt she was White, but she never really could gain acceptance… So when she heard that, she went off, and she called and threatened to sue the label… She demanded that Tommy did something about changing the record… [She and Tommy] were basically legally separated. 50 was a Columbia artist, but she was the Columbia artist. So they had no choice… Mariah was still a very valid artist, and Tommy was still in power. It’s funny. Mariah had a similar problem with Biggie, when he said, “Mariah Carey/Kinda scary” [in “Just Playing (Dreams)”]. She hated him so much.

D-Dot: I was in one of the meetings when Donnie Ienner told us that Mariah wants the thing out… So 50 went back and changed it to Case and Mary.

50 Cent: I was mad to make any changes [to my lyrics]. I didn’t want to change anything. You had more artists that were more effective not being changed… You had Big Pun on there, the best Latin rapper ever. Master P was an explosion at that point. They was, like, the hottest thing out of the South ever, No Limit, at that point… Mariah’s been a star since as far back as I can remember. I was signing to the label; she’s the biggest thing on the label. And married to the guy who runs it. It’s a different thing, man.

Cory Rooney: [When the record came out to the public,] I remember people listening to [it] and going, “I hope he don’t say nothing about me.” Even me… It’s like, “Oh my God… We let this nigga in the industry, and we have an animal amongst us.” And nobody felt safe anymore. He was really direct [in what he was saying]: “I would rob you, and I would rob you, I would rob all y’all.”

Rich Nice: Chaka Zulu, was doing radio at the time at Columbia and was taking 50 around backstage at Summer Jam, introducing him to people, on some cool, like, “Let’s put a face with the name, and everybody be easy.” When he met Jay, Jay said, “You know I gotta get you back for that, right?” And he was like, “No doubt, no doubt.” But he didn’t know he meant right then. When Jay went onstage and said his rhyme…I called [50] and said, “You on, kid. You on right now. It’s on and poppin’. You got the biggest dude in the game sayin’ your name.” And that wasn’t the intent. We did it more to make him an individual, to separate him from everybody.

50 Cent: That song had momentum. It had impacted where the hip-hop culture was aware of it, and me, based on it… A lot of people didn’t [respond to] it. The ones who had the egos had to respond. Because they weren’t used to somebody openly putting them out there, and who was I to say it? They all battled with each other, had stuff to say about people subconsciously. They always wrote subliminal shit. That’s the sucker way to do it. Just say it, if you got an issue.

Why is it that in order for women of color to “make it” they must first go blond and mimic the eurocentric standard of beauty? The latest victim or willing participant (you cannot rape the willing) is Nicki Minaj. Nicki is the “it” girl reencarnation of Lil’ Kim’s uber sex appeal for marketing purposes. She is a rapper, not emcee (there is a difference) with an annoying voice, banging body and lyrical context with no content. In other words she only raps about how sexy she is and how much money she got. Sooooooo! Excuse me, I digress. The issue at hand is the image that is repeated over and over by women of color to so called fit in or get in “the industry.” The video below is behind-the-scenes look at Nicki Minaj’s photo shoot for Right On Magazine.

From federal prosecutor to accused violent gangster, pimp, and drug-dealer…That’s the unusual career trajectory taken, say the Feds, by Paul Bergrin, who was indicted earlier this month in a 39-count racketeering indictment.

In a drama that could have been made for HBO, Bergrin — a white-collar defense lawyer who once represented, pro bono, a solider accused of abusing Abu Ghraib detainees — seems to have allowed his gangster clients to drag him into a world of violent crime. And he may have gone a lot further than Maury Levy ever did for Stringer Bell.

Bergrin, a former AUSA with the U.S. attorney’s office in New Jersey, is charged with leading a criminal enterprise that used violence, intimidation, and deceit to generate millions of dollars, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. Among the most eye-catching allegations against him:
- That he used a Newark restaurant as a front for a cocaine-distribution network.
- That he oversaw a $1,000-an-hour call-girl ring in New York City.
- That he had a witness killed in one drug case, and hired a hitman to kill another.

You can read a key portion of the indictment here.

Bergrin was first arrested in May. His lawyers have argued in court papers that prosecutors have tied together baseless cases. And they have argued successfully to have Bergrin removed from solitary confinement, where he had been held after his arrest in May. But since a more detailed indictment was filed earlier this month, they have said little publicly.

According to an affidavit from a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, Bergrin came to serve as “house counsel for a number of criminal organizations, including . . . the Latin Kings, the Bloods, and a number of high-level drug-trafficking organizations.” And Bergrin had “essentially become one of the criminals he represents,” according to Ralph J. Marra, Jr., the acting U.S. attorney for New Jersey.

His client list has also included Queen Latifah (Dana Elaine Owens), Lil’ Kim (Kimberly Denise Jones), and mobster Angelo Prisco, as well as a U.S. soldier accused of detainee abuse at Abu Ghraib, who Bergrin represented pro bono. Bergrin also represented the “King of All Pimps,” Jason Itzler, who ran the high-end New York escort service, New York Confidential, that proved to be Eliot Spitzer’s undoing. (Itzler called Ashley Dupre (Ashley Rae Maika DiPietro), “one of the best hookers ever.”) Indeed, prosecutors allege that Bergrin took over the management of the company after Itzler was jailed in 2005.

A retired Army Reserve major and the son of a New York City Police Department officer, Bergrin, 53, was an Essex County prosecutor who later worked in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Newark, before starting a criminal defense practice in 1991.

But he may have offered his clients more than just legal representation. The Inquirer reports:

Though the indictment includes one murder and one murder conspiracy, investigators contend that witnesses have linked Bergrin to at least three other homicides. They also say Bergrin routinely bribed witnesses to win cases. And, they contend, when bribery wasn’t an option, he resorted to violence.

“No witness, no case” was the phrase he used repeatedly in his criminal-defense work, authorities say.

In addition to the charges related to bribery, witness intimidation, and running the escort service, Bergrin also allegedly used a Newark restaurant, Isabella’s, as a front for drug dealing; and formed a real estate company that conducted phony mortgage deals.

Bergrin’s undoing may have come when he allegedly smuggled a cellphone into a jail so a client could call a Chicago hitman to set up the murder of a witness. Bergrin himself then traveled to Chicago to meet with the hitman, say the Feds.

But the hitman was a cooperating witness. According to prosecutors, he recorded Bergrin saying things like: “Put on a ski mask and make it look like a robbery. . . . It cannot under any circumstances look like a hit . . . make it look like a home-invasion robbery.”

The hitman also recorded a conversation in which he told another lawyer, working with Bergrin, that Bergrin wanted to personally take part in the hit.

“He said he wants to do it with me,” the hitman said “I said, ‘No, Paul. For what you went to law school to become . . . stick with that s-.’ Let me do what I have to do.’ “

Replied the other lawyer: “Paul’s a stone killer, bro. . . . That’s what he is. . . . He’s done work [meaning, committed murder], bro.”

One underworld source, a former Bergrin client, told the Inquirer that Bergrin “enjoyed life on the edge.” Sounds like he may have enjoyed it just a little too much.

Sometimes I have to address the ladies. Fellas, I’m sure you can relate to this one, but ladies, pay attention.

I was hanging out with a few friends at a bar not too long ago, just letting off some steam on a Saturday night over a few drinks. It’s a neighborhood dive and it’s a little ghetto, but the music is decent and the drinks are cheap.

I like to people watch. I’m a people watcher. As I look across the dance floor, I’m beginning to think that you can tell a lot about a woman over the kind of music she listens to. Maybe I’m putting too much stock into that but I don’t think I’m too far off.

This garbage rap song comes on and the women rush the dance floor, some screaming, “Gurl, that’s my song!” The chorus goes:

“I know a lil’ freak, in in Hollywood, Sucks on d*ck, does it does it real good

I know a lil’ freak, in in Hollywood, Sucks on d*ck, does it does it real good

I long d*ck her like UGH UGH UGH, I long d*ck her like UGH UGH UGH,”

And the women in the place are singing along like UGH UGH UGH, making thrusting motions, and smacking each other on the ass. They’re getting it in like they’re shooting the video for this sad ass song.

The only thing I could think was “I feel sorry for the poor bastard that picks a wife out of this sorry group of harlots.”

Now if a man ran up to one of these hoes and asked her “WHAT’S UP WITCHO PUSSY?”, she’d be offended, saying that she’s a woman and should be respected…but two seconds ago, she had her girlfriend bent over givin’ it to her hard and singing along about how her head game is so good.

B*tch please.

If you want me to treat you like a woman, act like one. Don’t run around the bar with your titties poppin’ out screaming “I long d*ck her like UGH UGH UGH”. You can bet if a guy asks you to dance while you’re talking about the good head you give, he isn’t thinking that you’re an intellectual and that he might take you home to meet Mom one day.

Trust me, the fellas are not trying to turn hoes into housewives.

My question is where did the ladies run off too? When did women like Anita Baker and Melissa Morgan get replaced by Lil’ Kim and Trina? (I admit though, I had the Lil’ Kim “Hardcore” album cover poster). And when the f*ck did we think it was good thing?

I wish I could say it’s a sign of the times, but I can’t. I remember back in the mid 90’s, we use to go to this bar not too far from school. The DJ would put on a certain record and all the girls would rush the dance floor screaming:

“Put it in my mouthhhhhhhhh. In my muthaf*ckin’ mouthhhhhhhhhh.”

You didn’t need to ask a girl to dance. Akinyele, Mr. “Ak-nell, you know I rock well, girl I’ll get up in that ass like K-Y Gel” did it for you. And I knew none of these girls would ever be Ms. Right, just Ms. Right Now. By 6:15, I was kickin’ em’ out….

I’ll call a ho a ho in a second. If any lady reading this got offended reading this because they were singing UGH UGH UGH last week at the club…I’m sorry….but you’re probably a ho, or at least have ho tendencies.

If you want a man to respect you, act like the woman you claim to be. Bottom line.

Feel free to comment.

Soooo, my new favorite bitch is (drum-roll please)………………..The Harajuku Barbie, Nicki Minaj!!!! She

Soooo, my new favorite bitch is (drum-roll please)………………..The Harajuku Barbie, Nicki Minaj!!!! She is signed to Lil’ Wayne’s label, Young Money, but by no means from the N.O. She is from Queens, NY, and bringing some much needed femininity to the game. I had been hearing a little buzz around her name, and she really got my attention on the “5 Star Chick” remix with Yo Gotti, Trina, and Gucci Mane, while her rhymes on this track are sub-par compared to her others, but she definetly has theeeeee hottest chain in the game right now which is what reeeeeaaaaaalllllly got my attention, seeing as how my alter ego is also BARBIE!!!! So I “bought” a few of her mixtapes, and FELL IN LOVE with her flow, her swag, and (some of) her style. Sometimes her diction sounds a little bit like Lil’ Kim, and she covered a few Biggie hits that Kim also did covers of, and Kim first called herself the “Black Barbie dressed in Bvlgari” and posed as a Barbie doll in her “How Many Licks Does it Take” video circa 2000, when Nicki, ( who is now aged 24 about to turn 25 in about two weeks) was surely alive and listening, but I can’t really knock her for trying cuz all things old are new again, and she has taken the Barbie alias to different heights. She calls herself the Harajuku Barbie because she appreciates and her style semi-mimicks the Harajuku culture of Japan, and there are constant references in her raps to Asian culture “faster than a sprinter, pass me my chopsticks, I eat this rap bitches for dinner”, her other aliases include Nicki Lewinsky (cuz she only fucks with Presidents), Nicki the Ninja, and of course Minaj is not her real name, she changed it from Maraj because Minaj was a play on her bisexuality, the fact that she has a nasty flow, and she eats the other rap bitches with her flow!!! IDK how I feel about her style, it needs a little work, I love and appreciate the pink girly glitzy glam look, but she needs to step her cookies up in the fashion department, it looks a little “Wet Seal” or “Forever 21”….I am NOT HATING at all, I love dat Bitch, but she should perhaps marry the style of Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, Lil Kim, Hayden Pannatiere, Barbie, and the Harajuku Girls to create some sort of Haute Couture style that is unique to her. I love the chain, love the hair (with the lil pink at the bottom) love the Barbie pink nail polish, buuuuut we gon need you to cut the stripper nails a little; short nails are def the trend, and have been for the past like 3 years, that long shit is played. But on an interview at Honeymag.com, she did say that her style was evolving, and that she was going to step outside of the rap fashion box, so I would love to see her in some sexy Barbie Pink mini dresses, maybe even a gown on the red carpet, I do adore the tutu’s and happen to be the proud owner of a Haute Couture tutu (I’ll have to find you guys the website), But I would really like to see Minaj step out as a true fashion icon, and not just a caricature like Lil’ Kim. Her lyrics and metaphors are crazy, she raps over the hardest and most popular beats as if they are her own, and we cannot wait for her album, which is stated to be released in the second quarter of 2010. But in the meantime, we can get our Nicki fix with the latest compilation cd of Young Money artists, the first single is called Bed Rock featuring Nicki, Lloyd, Drake, and Gudda Gudda, and a video soon coming. Also, she is featured on the newest Robin Thicke single “Shakin it for Daddy”, and Jay-Z personally suggested to Thicke that Minaj be featured on the track!!!! In the meantime…..IT’s BARBIE BITCH!!!!

Just as his Toussaint L’ouverture lead the Haitian Revolution, Wyclef Jean has returned to his Hip-Hop roots with his latest EP From The Hut, From The Projects, To The Mansion to spark a musical revolution. Despite never really having left the public eye, the pioneering musician felt it was necessary to return to rhyming under an alias to reflect his current revolutionary mindframe. Introducing Toussaint St. Jean, but this does not mark an exit for Wyclef Jean, but rather a new chapter in his already fascinating story.

“Revolution is in my bloodline,” he says, before explaining how Toussaint was one of the key figures in the Revolution for Haiti. “So with the tone of the message that I would be giving when I rapped, the name automatically came to me,” he elaborates. “The EP goes back to the essence. It was important to go back to the basics and the fundamentals, because sometimes you get so big that people forget where you come from,” he adds. “I wanted people to understand that I have not forgotten Hip-Hop. I’ve not forgotten lyrics; that is very important in what I do.”

Sean “Diddy” Combs turned the big 4-0 and celebrated at the ritzy Plaza Hotel in New York City on Thursday (Nov. 19). The star-studded event drew the likes of Jay-Z, Bono, Young Jeezy, Nelly, Estelle, Cassie, Rick Ross, Lupe Fiasco, Martha Stewart (hmm..yes I guess she lost her GPS), and Kim Kardashian. Trey Songz and the legendary Al Green performed.

Kim Kardashian looked uber sexy in this unique black & white number, as she arrived at Diddy’s birthday bash Thursday night. We saw her jetting out of LA the other day, so now we know where she was heading! Yum.

Amber Rose surprisingly didn’t quite have the same degree of sex appeal, looking just a tad above average in this simple red dress…

Mrs Kanyeezy didn’t look as bad as some of the other guests though! Here’s a rundown of The Good, The Bad and The Just Plain WRONG!

First up, Cassie…

Then we have Diddy’s mother, Janice Combs

The Dirty Money girls…

Estelle…

And Lil’ Kim…

Some evil person obviously switched her Diddy invite with one of her old Halloween invitations! How dreadful!

Diddy has hit the big 40 and celebrated last night in NYC at The Plaza Hotel with the elitest of elites of Hollywood. He also brought along his adorable sons. Hands down, hottest look of the night goes to Ms. June Ambrose. Sister was ‘haute’ in all white!! Major props for having Al Green as entertainment for the night too. I do have to wonder how many times did Diddy say ‘Ciroc is in the building’ though. LOL!
