Friday the 13th celebrated Olivia’s 25th birthday (again) aka End of Season, lol, and also the going away party for Nick Chaney aka Massive Clearance, as he’s moving back to New Zealand.

What a celebration it was! We started off at Hook, the basement bar beside the 711 behind Luxy. Then moved on to Dark + Light put on by A State of Sound at Luxy, featuring Burn Electric (Stefan & Dom) and Genetically Modified Beats (GMB – Eben & Matt), with DJ Hooker (Dom) playing at the end of the night.

It’s never a good idea for soaps to stray far from their usual arena. At present we have the continuity announcer saying gamely, ‘and in just a minute, we’ll be heading off, not to Ambridge, but to Costa Rica’, and our hearts sink.

Dodgy Matt’s done a runner, dragging a reluctant Lilian in his wake. For every cockroach the size of a terrier that terrorises Lilian, Matt sees only a nice little pastry shop. He is as determinedly upbeat as she is down. It’s like two sides of a bipolar personality in one fractious relationship.

The long-distance phone calls between Lilian and her anxious sister Jennifer are splendidly done. Jenny’s primary role is to say, ‘Oh, LILIAN!’ and she can imbue this simple phrase with exasperation, sympathy or horror. Some yokel asked Jenny where Lilian and Matt were, and rather than admit to a country in Central America – soap opera code for ‘bail-jump’ – Jenny rather wonderfully found herself murmuring, ‘Oh, they’ve gone to one of the Costas.’

Poor Lilian hates the Costa she’s in. She’d rather be in Costa Coffee, as Matt pointed out, when she said she had nothing to do all day. ‘Do what you do at ‘ome!’ he snapped. ‘Go to lunch! Get your ‘air done!’

‘Twice a day’, retorted Lil, ‘Given this humidity.’ She sounded for a moment as if she would rather like to have her hair done this often.

Lilian’s been so stressed and shrill, she has managed to force Matt into doing something that Archers characters absolutely hate doing: namely, reveal the cost of something. Prices are never specified. It’s too vulgar. Even in the shop, when Susan dourly rings up purchases, we are not privy to exactly what the items were in the wire basket which led to the sum of £5.21. Generally, no sum beyond a tenner is ever mentioned. Which is why it was so shocking when Matt finally admitted to Lilian how much he was paying for their flea-hole in an insalubrious barrio. He hedged and flannelled in usual Archers style for a while. ‘Less than what we’d pay in England’, and ‘He’s charging a fair sum.’

I was barely paying attention at this point, toying with my tea and wondering if it was too early to pour in a slug of gin. Then, with a final push from Lilian, he suddenly said, ‘800 dollars a month.’ You could have knocked me down with a cockroach. I pushed my tea aside and grabbed the gin bottle. I don’t know what this means for the Archers, but I suspect it’s the beginning of the end for Matt and Lilian.

Lillian will also be hosting the BRUNCH OF THE YEAR at Roxy Roots where she’ll be cooking up a storm from 11-5 on Sunday, October 18th. (This Sunday!!) It’s called Caribbean Pride, and will be the head chef making delicious yummy foos she’s know for – like the Fry Jacks and the famous (my personal fav) beans! The Mayan chicken is pretty damn good too, a flavor you won’t find outta the Caribbean. Her momma sends it t her, you can’t buy that spice here, you MUST try!

Long night. Think we rolled in a 5:30? No wonder I felt like shit all day on Sunday. Now you see my struggle? Might keep it a bit easier this weekend, don’t wanna miss out on brunch! (and neither should you, chickens!)

For this assignment, I chose to use a photo taken in our Core class. In Core we made abstract objects. We photographed the objects, using them as props and played around with them with the human figure. I decided to erase the body because most of my doodlings of creatures have no bodies.

“Create a digital photograph that is a contemporary re-interpretation of another artist’s work”

I chose to render Steamboat Willie by Walt Disney. Steamboat Willie was the one of the first animated cartoons that started it all for Disney. The mouse Willie became the now infamous Mickey Mouse. I wanted to create a version of Steamboat Willie that portrayed how I got into the art world. Also, I have always been a huge Disney fan because of how genius most of his original characters are. As I child, I loved Disney movies, not for their stories, but for the characters and animation.

How it all began for me: Calvin and Hobbes was the first comic book that got me to start drawing. I drew my version of Hobbes when I was 8 years old which I will never forget how to draw. My tiger in hardwired into my brain. Black and White Photography was the first “official” art class I had ever taken. I spent my middle school years taking a lot of photos and going to photography camps. The background is painted with solid colors and outlined in black because I wanted it to resemble the roughness of how a picture can turn out from the program Paint (found on most PC computers). I used to mess around with Paint on my dad’s work computer, while my brother and sister tried to figure out how to play Solitaire. The floor is covered with Pablo Picasso’s Three Musicians because my first fine arts teacher introduced me to painting through his work I was hooked immediately.

The first time I heard “Oxbow” mentioned, I imagined a large piece of farmland where cows and oxen wore giant red bows. I never imagined I would end up spending a semester at Oxbow, living the best sixteen weeks of my life, so far.

Oxbow is an art semester program for junior and senior high school students located in Napa, California. I attended the program in the fall of 2007, the first semester of my junior year. It was the second time I was fully immersed in an art program. (The first time was the summer of 2007 when I attended RISD precollege, but that’s another story and possibly blog).

I love receiving “real” mail.  Usually I open our mailbox to find a Victoria’s Secret catalog, a water bill, three pieces of unnecessary mail from the VA for Danny, and some strange letter from Rice suggesting that the university still somehow believes that I have graduated.  If I’m lucky I find one of my Netflix selections.  (Anne of Green Gables!  Woohoo!).  Sometimes my celebrations are cut short when I realize that it is, instead, one of Danny’s picks.  (The Spirit.  Bah.)

Anyway.  Real mail.  I love real mail — when I unclog our narrow apartment mailbox and find something with a handwritten address.  I appreciate the immediate satisfaction of email, and I’m grateful that I can fire up gchat and send Bee a quick note about the latest link to a ridiculous news item about a cat who can read the newspaper.  But who doesn’t love receiving something that required a stamp and some forethought?

While I appreciate real mail and certainly love  sending it, I’m not much of a letter writer.  I write pretty slowly, and I get impatient and hand-crampy.  And then I decide halfway through a sentence that I want to revise, and it’s too late!  Blast!  And there’s nothing I hate more than crossing out words in a letter.  Oh so gauche.

So I’ve been thinking about real mail because my friend Lilian moved to Asheville, and I know that she is also a real mail person.  Because I am a failed letter writer, I have been on the lookout for quirky postcards.  I figure that they’re the perfect balance — real mail but requiring only a few witty sentences.  I have discovered that while Borders might have a few interesting images, Barnes and Noble has a much more interesting selection.

So far I’ve purchased a few postcards with illustrations by Edward Gorey and a slew of Texas-y postcards published by the Found Image Press.  A selection of my most recent purchases (and I apologize for the intrusive press logo):

But my favorite by far features a photograph by Martin Parr entitled “The Actual Boot.”  Apparently this is a well-known photograph postcard — famous enough to merit a place in the title of The Actual Boot: The Photographic Postcard Boom, 1900-1920 by Parr and Jack Stasiak.   (Or perhaps Parr is just a shameless self-promoter).  Anyway, here is the wonderful photograph:

The note attached to the boot reads: “The actual boot the lad was wearing on Thursday June 24 at Ringmors when struck by lightning, a horse being killed at the same moment not more than a yard away.”

Lilian has a well-developed appreciation for the folksy and weird, and I know she’ll love this one when I send it along.  After all, who doesn’t want to open the mailbox on a humdrum Tuesday and receive, alongside the electric bill and a circular for Target, a picture of the actual boot – a piece of real mail that is in fact an invitation to speculate on the frailty of life, the sturdiness of boots, and the ill fate of an equine friend?

Que no se diga que este blog cae en la rutina y lo predecible. Esta semana no tocaba entrevista pero por azares del destino e Internet, y sobre todo tras un día medio aplatanado ayer, estoy posteando esto. Ya veré como le hago la próxima semana, pero por lo pronto no quería dejar que esto pasara mas tiempo en el tintero.

Todos los blogueros (espero) tenemos comentaristas. En muchos casos son la mejor parte de tener un blog. Es en donde uno socializa, aprende, se divierte y entra en contacto directo con sus lectores. En lo personal tengo muy buenas experiencias con las personas que comentan en estas páginas. Literalmente he hecho amigos a través de los comentarios que luego dejan.

Sin embargo, hay veces que escuchamos cosas que no necesariamente son agradables, en algunos casos son útiles y necesarias, en otras son completamente irrelevantes. Es parte de la vida de alguien que expone sus ideas, peripecias y creaciones en la red, no hay de otra.

Hace un par de semanas una bloguera que tiene un lugar ganado en mi RSS tuvo un episodio de los del segundo tipo. Me refiero a Lilián de La Isla al Mediodía.  Todo empezó con un post que personalmente considero bastante divertido y que normalmente no hubiera tenido mayor consecuencia. Sin embargo, generó un comentario que dio pie a toda una controversia. No me crean y vayan y léanlo para que entiendan que pasó. El comentario es el de las 10:05.

Lilián lleva un rato blogueando en varios lados y no es precisamente una novata en esto, pero en este caso las circunstancias se armaron para que la cosa se hiciera mas grande de lo que quizá todos hubiéramos querido. Creo que es un ejemplo muy interesante para todos los que escribimos y es por esto que le pedí a Lilián que nos contara en sus propias palabras que sucedió y que pasa dentro y fuera de un bloguero en estos casos.

Sin mas preámbulos, les dejo a la rizada y frecuentemente correteada Lilián:

Llevas mucho tiempo escribiendo y publicando en Internet y es de esperar que hayan habido episodios similares previamente ¿Por qué ese comentario generó esta reacción?

La respuesta es muy sencilla, y obedece a un rasgo de mi carácter del que he hablado muchas veces en mi blog y en la charla común: soy muy irritable.

Y acá debo contextualizar mi enojo. Nunca reacciono así. Me han dicho cosas peores, cosas que los niños no deben escuchar ni proferir, pero jamás había respondido con tal saña. La razón es personal: había tenido un día especialmente duro, una semana de tensiones y estrés innecesario, y justo antes de leer el comentario me habían propinado un regaño colosal, absurdo e injusto en mi trabajo. Luego entonces, tal como lo asenté, no estaba para aguantar las hijodeputeces de nadie. Sencillamente, a veces no estás de humor para sonreír y tomártelo a la ligera si llega un extraño a exigir cosas que ni tú misma sabías que debías dar. Y, además, me pareció sólo la puntita del iceberg dentro de una serie de comentarios y situaciones que había recibido en la semana que me parecían el más perfecto ejemplo de la doble moral: quien me acusa de corrupta (y exige, con ello, una moralidad que según ellos no tengo) no se detiene medio milímetro para levantar el dedo y señalar.

¿Donde pintas la raya entre un comentario que dice algo que no es muy agradable pero tiene utilidad y otro que nada más es ofensivo?

Para mí la línea divisoria es muy clara: cualquiera puede espetarme que soy una boba, frígida y que mis gustos musicales son patéticos. Puede que me ofenda, pueda que lo lea con ira y los puños crispados, y hasta que le dé una patada a la cama de puro coraje. Pero no digo nada: me lo aguanto, porque no significa nada.

Pero hay dos temas en los que no tolero comentarios ofensivos, y por dos motivos diferentes: mi trabajo y mi árbol que da moras (o la moral, como dicen). El motivo número 1 es que tengo un problema declarado y aceptado (aunque no superado) para aceptar críticas. Y no porque me sienta infalible, sino porque genuinamente me siento pateada por todos los flancos cuando me señalan los errores, que por otro lado ya intuía.

El segundo motivo es más bien personal, y creo que universal también. Simplemente, piensa qué sentirías si un extraño cualquiera, a quien jamás has visto ni verás en tu vida, llegara un buen día a decirte que has tomado decisiones incorrectas y que lo decepcionas. Te cae en la punta del hígado, porque ni te conoce ni sabe a qué obedecen tus decisiones.

Creo que es lo mismo.

Todos tenemos una opinión pero saber plantearla es importante también ¿crees que la forma de decir las cosas es importante, sobre todo aquí en línea?

La única forma que defiendo y me importa es la forma gramatical: si sabes decirlo y escribirlo, con estricto apego a las reglas ortográficas, lingüísticas, semánticas y filológicas, lo aceptaré. Fondo es forma, dicen.

Mi confesión es que si llega cualquier estupidín a decirme, con faltas de ortografía, que soy una pelmaza… automáticamente se autoinvalida y lo direcciono a la sala de gente-que-no-importa. Si sus argumentos son articulados, lo leo con atención y luego paso a lamentarme porque gente inteligente me considera una tonta (cosa frecuente).

De ahí en fuera, estoy totalmente en contra de la corrección política. Nada me provoca más escozor que la gente que se cuida de no ofender a nadie con lo que escribe, ¿con qué propósito? Siempre habrá gente que sienta herida su susceptibilidad aún si nos la pasáramos escribiendo “personas con capacidades diferentes” o “adultos mayores”.

Así que, respondiendo a tu pregunta, sí: la forma es importante. La forma en que algo está escrito. En cuanto a la “forma” de decir las cosas, de cómo suavizarlas o matizarlas, todo eso se puede ir al diablo (y aunque parezca que me contradigo, el comentario ante el que me puse como energúmeno está escrito con las patas).

¿En algún momento te han dado ganas (o tenido motivos) de hacer algo parecido en el blog de alguien?

Claro, pero si me dan ganas de hacerlo firmo con mi nombre y me atengo a las consecuencias. Jamás he dejado anónimos.

Otra cosa ante la que me defendí es que yo he reaccionado violentamente en los últimos días. Mi excusa tonta es esa: son reacciones. Jamás he tenido la iniciativa de ir al blog de alguien a chingarlo nomás porque sí. Jamás me meto a blogs ajenos a criticar o burlarme del autor. Y no porque sea el ejemplo número 1 de cortesía y respeto, sino porque sencillamente me da flojera. Con trabajos comento en algunos blogs que me gustan, y eso no siempre, ¿por qué habría de ir a perder mi tiempo a los blogs que no me gustan?

¿Que tanto el lograr notoriedad (mas visitas a un sitio) juega en este tipo de sucesos antes que la genuina opinión personal o discrepancia de criterios?

No sé si te refieras a mi caso o al del muchacho que me comentó (N. del A. – Me refería al de el). Creo que se dan casos, pero no siempre. La provocación vende, y por eso quien se la pase denostando o burlándose de la gente (como es mi caso, para ser honesta) va a ganar adeptos. La incorrección política per se es casi o más horripilante que la corrección política.

No creo personalmente que este chavo lo haya hecho para jalar visitas a su blog. Es una forma de publicidad inversa muy tonta, en todo caso. Pero sí, ocurre.

¿Crees que personas con trabajos tan visibles como el tuyo (Chilango.com, elchamuco.com, etc.) o con una vida en línea tan activa como la tuya son mas susceptibles a esto?

Supongo, pero en realidad es un asunto de probabilidad. Todos somos blancos de ataque, porque todos somos criticables. Sin embargo, los que de alguna manera tienen más “proyección” tienen que recibir, por lógica, un número mayor de ofensas. ¿Obama es peor que Calderón? Desde luego que no, pero es más conocido y por ello recibe más críticas. Es un ejemplo idiota, pero siempre he sido mala en matemáticas y no me dan las palabras para explicar el fenómeno. Todo se reduce a que, mientras más te leen, más te critican.

¿Alguna recomendación para estos casos a los blogueros que leen esto?

¡No actúen como yo! Me costó toda una semana de regaños, reflexiones y largos periodos bajo la regadera (con ropa y en posición de inválida) para entender, de una vez y por todas, que la única arma poderosa contra estos “ataques” -no sé si llamarlos ataques, porque a lo más son meras provocaciones de gente ociosa a la que no le importas un comino- es la llana indiferencia. Es la recomendación que te daba tu mamá cuando te molestaban en la escuela y hoy, en tu vida adulta, sigue funcionando: ignóralos, hijo, ignóralos.

Como dice uno de los grandes aforismos de internet:

Do not feed the trolls.

Sabiduría pura.

Ciertamente. Ya lo oyeron, que no les digan, ni les cuenten.

Le agradezco a Lilián que se haya dado tiempo para responder esto, sobre todo estando fuera de casa y en una odisea burocrática en provincia. Så har då kronprinsessan Victorias fästman Daniel Westling gjort sin debut i de större sammanhangen. Och han tycks ha gjort det med den äran.

Det var söndagen den 12 juli som Victoria och Daniel, tillsammans med kung Carl XVI Gustaf och drottning Silvia, fick representera kungahuset vid en mottagning för Republiken Koreas president Lee Myung-bak med hustru Kim Yoon-ok på Sollidens slott på Öland. Expressens rutinerade hovreporter Johan T. Lindwall ger Daniel goda vitsord den 13 juli och påpekar, att herr Westling gjort en remarkabel återhämtning efter sin njuroperation.

Som monarkist glädjer jag mig givetvis åt de goda nyheterna och ser fram emot bröllopet nästa sommar!

Men vårt kungahus får minsann inte enbart inkassera lovord. Under Expressen-artikeln om statsbesöket från Sydkorea utgjuter vänsterpartiledaren Lars Ohly sin vredes skålar över det förgripliga i kronprinsessparets framtida boende på Haga slott. “Jag tycker det är skandal att de har fått tillträde till det här slottet alldeles gratis”, citeras Ohly bland annat och uttrycker även som sin mening att herrskapet “borde fixa sitt boende själva.”

Den magsure kommunisten Ohly är inte ensam bland representanter för den röd-gröna oppositionsröran om att lufta sin republikanska svenska avundsjuka. På sin blogg den 23 april är John Johansson, politisk sekreterare för Socialdemokraterna vid oppositionskansliet i Örebro, inne på samma linje som Ohly. I ett tårdrypande inlägg, som går ut på att i tider när det finns uteliggare, trångbodda människor och fattigpensionärer så borde inte Daniel och Victoria få Haga slott till sitt förfogande, skriver Johansson:

“Så finns familjen Bernadotte. Med en årsinkomst på flera miljoner utför de sitt värv som kungafamilj i Sverige. Och som när de gifter sig får mer pengar. Och när de ska flytta ihop med någon annan person får ett slott. (…) Mitt förslag är att vi byter regering och statsskick.”

Den allmänna avundsjukan mot vårt kungahus från socialistiskt disponerade personer är tarvlig, okunnig och kortsiktig. Till och med en kommunist som prästsonen Ohly och en socialdemokratisk propagandaskrivare som Johansson i Örebro borde kunna inse att rikets blivande statschef och hennes gemål har ett behov av att bo ståndsmässigt. Det blir inte färre uteliggare om de, som Ohly föreslår, får “fixa sitt boende själva.”

Om regeringschefen tillåts disponera ett palats i Stockholms stad så borde rimligtvis den blivande statschefen kunna få tillgång till ett mindre slott i stadens utkant!

Dessutom är det inte sant att kronprinsessparet “får” Haga slott så där annars bara. Den mörkblått knökkonservative Michaël Lehman konstaterar således på sin blogg “Kunskap*Bildning*Tradition*den 10 juli, med hänvisning till en artikel i Svenska Dagbladet, att det regeringen gör är att överlåta dispositionsrätten för Haga slott vid Brunnsviken i Stockholm till Daniel och Victoria.

Att kommunister och sossar inte gillar kungahuset särskilt bra visste vi redan. Men att en monarkist tydligen har ett horn i sidan till ätten Bernadotte är väl litet otippat. Jag vet nämligen inte hur man eljest skall tolka en debattartikel som Jakob E:son Söderbaum gjorde sig skyldig till i Aftonbladet, av alla tidningar, den 19 juni.

I artikeln, rubricerad “Daniel kan inte bli prins”, ondgör sig Söderbaum över konungens planer på att upphöja Daniel Westling till prins samt hertig av Västergötland efter det planerade bröllopet med Victoria nästa sommar. Juristen Söderbaum hänvisar till att den nuvarande konstitutionen förbjuder kungen att adla folk och påpekar, att den siste som adlades var upptäcktsresanden Sven Hedin 1902.

Att adla å ena sidan och att utnämna någon till prins å andra sidan är emellertid inte riktigt samma sak. Enligt Söderbaum, för övrigt ordförande i Förenade monarkister, har Carl XVI Gustaf lika fullt “inte alls rätt att tilldela Daniel Westling titeln Prins.” Nej, hävdar Söderbaum (på fullt allvar, får man förmoda), kungen kan inte ens utnämna någon till “Herr”!

Visst skall grabben få bli prins!

Det är till att göra bort sig med besked. Herr är förstås ingen officiell titel ens med stor bokstav - till och med jag kan “utnämna” någon till “herr”… Söderbaum har desslikes ovanan att stava kungliga titlar med stor begynnelsebokstav: “Prins”, “Kronprinsessa”, “Drottning” och så vidare. Så gör man i engelsktalande länder men på intet sätt i Sverige. Söderbaum utnämner till på köpet kungens farfars (Gustaf VI Adolf) söner Sigvard, Carl Johan och Lennart – vilka samtliga tvingades avsäga sig sina prinstitlar därför att de gifte sig med damer ur borgerligheten – till dennes bröder!

En sådan fadäs får man knappast göra sig skyldig till om man gör anspråk på att hålla sig till tradition och fason.

En kommentator som kallar sig Ällin påtalar mycket riktigt på Aftonbladets nätupplaga Jakob E:son Söderbaums pinsamma grodor på bland annat följande sätt:

“Rätten att förläna prins- och hertigtitlar är över huvud taget inte reglerad i 1974 års (Söderbaum skriver 1975) regeringsform. (…) Men i och med att prinsessan Lilian blev prinsessa och hertiginna 1976 och att denna förläning inte bestreds av statsmakterna, får denna rätt anses etablerad genom praxis.”

Med vänner som Söderbaum behöver kungahuset inte några fiender!

För övrigt markerade det sydkoreanska statsbesöket, att det i år är 50 år sedan Sverige och Sydkorea inledde sina handelsförbindelser.
