I don’t blame Lily Allen for being Lily Allen but she can’t blame me for hating her some days. Here Lily is up on stage in some ridiculous outfit trying to be fashionable or sexy or something, I can’t tell what she was going for here and that makes me hate her because we all know she can look better then this. Sometimes I think that singers just want to wear clothing that will get them noticed, you know what would get you really noticed? Wearing nothing at all! Anyways I still like Lily Allen, she is a cool chick but she needs to cut it out with all the crazy outfits and just be cool for awhile.

Oh and she has a innie belly button.

I first came across Eleanor’s music about a month ago after hearing about her on the Urban Outfitters blog. After listening to her song, “Belgium,” I was hooked and haven’t stopped listening to it! I was amazed when she found my blog so I asked her if she would be interested in doing an interview. Let me just say that Eleanor is one talented lady. She was also super excited to do this interview

Q: Eleanor, how old are you and where are you from? Plus, I have to know. Is Eleanor Seabird your real name?!

Eleanor: I’m 22 years old, and I’m originally from America! I still like to call London my hometown as it is the first place I finally feel able to call my home.  No, Eleanor Seabird is not my real name, it actually came from my old landlord/friend who was in the music business briefly and we were driving along and I was trying to come up with a stage name and I wanted to be Eleanor SEBERG after Jean Seberg my favourite actress and Sandy thought I said SEABIRD and was like, “Genius! Eleanor Seabird is great!” And I never corrected him. It might not be the name on my birth certificate, but Eleanor Seabird is a real person it’s who I am and who I’ve always been.

Q: When did you first begin singing and was it just for fun or could you see this as a possible career?

E: I began singing when I was four. I started off with Elton John cassette tapes and a little walkman and then did talent shows with my kid sister (we’d sing gruesome versions of the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen songs) then when I was about 17, my aunt took me to this music group and I would sing Wham! Songs at the mall to people. I didn’t take it seriously till I moved to London and felt like I had nothing to lose, so now I’m embarking on a proper career.

Q: Who are you usually compared to? And do you think that this person and you are alike?

E: Looks wise, people say I have this Karen O thing going on, and music wise it’s a combination of Karen O and Lily Allen, both of whom I love so I take it as a compliment.

Q: What is your favorite song to cover?

E: ANYTHING by Hall and Oates. I end my sets with a killer acoustic version of MANEATER and we want to do a Hall and Oates show of just their songs. They are so much fun to sing!

Q: Who were your influences growing up?

E: BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN! He was and is one of my heroes. I really loved Elton John, AC/DC, Genesis, the Police, a lot of classic rock growing up as I think I was in a state of rebellion coming from a conservative home so anything loud that made me feel like I was going to get the heck out of dodge had an impact on me. As I got to my late teens’ early 20s when I moved to London I became seduced by French pop of the 1960s and fell madly in love with Jacques Brel. He is, to me, such an amazing vocalist and performer. I really hope as an artist to be as captivating as he was/is.

Q: If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?

E: Jacques Brel, Dizzie Rascal, or Bruce Springsteen.

Q: What influenced your relocation to London from America?

E: Because I left the states to pursue a better life for myself I don’t have too many good memories but I will say the ones that mean the most are the ones with me and my radio. I always found solstice in listening to music. I think now as an adult and coming back to the states on different terms I’m looking forward to meeting people who love music, who are passionate about life, and to be able to see the parts of the country I haven’t seen, such as Seattle. I think growing up in a small town you’re just not inclined to travel so I’d only go to places where I had relatives, we never really could afford to travel much so even though I’m from America I’ve met Europeans who have seen more of it than I have.

Q: Describe to me the London music scene.

E: The London music scene is vast. Music is on every night of the week, and there is sooo much of it. That’s what’s great about London, it’s really chaotic and multi-cultural and the music capital of the world and any and everything goes here. I will say it’s cool to be a artist here as it does feel like a community and you go out to support your peers and they come out to support you and there are some big faces around so it’s cool to bump into some bands you really like and get the chance to strike up a conversation.

Q: What is a typical day for Eleanor Seabird?

E: This question makes me laugh as I know people expect a musician to have this lifestyle, but I’m quite boring to be honest. I eat breakfast at the same café every morning, I’m usually writing and recording throughout the day and at meetings with different people I want to collaborate with, and in the nights I’m either rehearsing or checking my Myspace and then off to bed. I had someone ask me where all the great nightclubs are in London and I couldn’t name ANY! I prefer films, art galleries, photography exhibits in my spare time. And of course going to gigs to see friends play or  a really great band I like.  It’s pretty standard.

Q: What has been most challenging for you as a musician?

E: I think taking the criticism. I have people tell me I’m crap or that my music is shit to my face and because I put a lot of myself and my life into my work, it’s hard not to take it personally. I have those moments where I’m ready to quit sometimes…….. it’s not a life for the faint of heart especially when trying to make a living doing it.

Q: At the end of the day, what makes it all worth it for you?

E: This! When people want to interview me or chat with me because they really enjoy what I do and want to learn more about who I am. It’s cool to know that there are people out there willing to give me a chance and come on this journey with me because I’m still unknown, but hopefully I’ll drum up support along the way. I really love to play and put on a good show for people and I’m glad that more people believe in me and my work than don’t so the fans and friends who believe in me make it worthwhile and it makes me want to really succeed!

Q: What are you listening to these days and who would you suggest my readers start listening to, besides you of course!

E: Oh there are a few suggestions: I really like this band called the Dark Room Notes based out of  Dublin, Ellie Goulding is great, The Temper Trap, The XX,  The Big Pink are great and put on a wicked show,  Pelle Carlberg is an indie guy from Sweden who’s great,  Dizzie Rascal is a rapper from London who I quite think is fun, and Mayer Hawthorne is cool! He’s like Amy Winehouse, but a bloke!

Q: Where can we expect to see you next Eleanor?

E: I’m starting up a show on my YouTube channel ELEAVISION called ELEANOR GOES where I go on little adventures. It’s not a reality show, though if I did a reality show I’d call it THE BILLS because that’s wherein my drama unfolds.  Me a telephone and the lady on the other line. LOL  It’s just a little documentary style show where I go off and do stuff. My first one is ICE SKATING and then I’m going to Norway to find this red phone booth I have an obsession with. Apparently phone booths are on the historical society’s list to preserve in Norway or so my Norwegian mates tell me. So going to go on a safari and try to capture them in their habitat before they disappear.  Good times……….

Coincidencia? pues a decir verdad tal vez,  ya que la nueva imagen de la campaña de la linea de accesorios de la marca Chanel de otoño/invierno 20090-2010 tiene una nueva cara y si es nada mas y nada menos que la artista londinense Lily Allen, las fotos estuvieron a cargo de nada mas y nada menos que del diseñador Karl Lagerfeld.

Una extraña mezcla para generos tan diferentes, sin olvidar que lily aparecio en el desfile de primavera-verano 2010 de esta prestigiosa marca, no cabe duda que aveces las cosas mas diferentes pueden encotrar un punto medio y relacionarse, les dejamos el video del desfile y la pagina para encontrar las demas fotos de la campaña, disfruntenlo.

On Tuesday night, Rich and I went to see Lily Allen play the Birmingham National Indoor Arena.   Neither of us felt particularly up for it (Rich bought the tickets on a whim) but after Rich rushed back from London, we managed to get up to the Mailbox in Birmingham to park (I really want to have a proper look around the Mailbox – it’s very posh).

We hadn’t eaten so we were desperately trying to find something vaguely healthy to eat but we just didn’t have enough time to eat somewhere proper so we ended up scorfing a sub-par hotdog / cheeseburger (me the hotdog, him the cheeseburger) with chips and a drink in the NIA.

We got down into the standing area in time for the support act, Example.  I had never heard of this dude but he was surprisingly good and he was also a bit dorky (and excited to play such a big crowd) which endeared me to him.  I recognised at least one of his songs and will non doubt be checking out more of his stuff.

We then hung around waiting for Lily to come on.  I’ll give her this – she does play some good tunes  to her waiting fans – Nirvana, Oasis, some old Ska…

The gig itself was very enjoyable – we don’t have her newer album but her tunes are very catchy and she is entertaining.  She was clearly very nervous and not used to performing to such a large audience.  She also managed to piss off half her audience by calling the people in the seated areas ‘posh’ and ‘moody’!  I think she was just overwhelmed by the large arena and it must be very weird having so many people sitting there watching you prance about (very few people in the seated areas were up on their feet dancing). With the bigger venue came a bigger budget for the gigs and when asked what she would like for her tour, she asked for a Guinness pump on stage so she could serve pints to her loyal fans who spend hours at the front before the gig to reserve their place (thus missing out on the bar!).  It was a nice idea but a little clunky especially since one of her songs ended while she was still pulling a pint, meaning it was a little anti-climactic.

She got into her swing though and despite her worrying about her poorly voice, she sounded great.  I wasn’t too keen on her backing musicians who at times drowned her out and generally made bit of a racket.  For me, the best bits were when the music was kept simple and her voice could shine.

At one point, Lily had to stop mid-song to get help for someone at the front who was ill.  She was visibly shaken by it and it threw her for just a moment but then she was back on form.  She performed a few covers: Oh my God (originally the Kaiser Chiefs which she covered for Mark Ronson), Naive (by The Kooks – I loved this!).

She also sang a version of Dub be Good to Me (originally Beats International) with special guest Professor Green (I am not nearly cool enough to know who this person is).

We left at the end of the main gig before her encore so we just missed her version of Womanizer (by Britney Spears, as if  I need to tell you) although we heard it through the door as we walked around the outside of the arena.  She also played my two favourite of her songs, Little Things and The Fear, before we left, so I was happy.

K introduced me to a delicious new curry restaurant last weekend so I thought I’d share. Not that it hasn’t gotten enough press what with Lily Allen’s recent appearance.

We ordered takeaway because it was too busy, but the atmosphere inside is buzzing, cozy with low lighting, lots of festive decorations, a few different eating areas and a well-stocked bar with smiling staff.

Being the only blond one in curry house is always a good sign. Indian people know Indian food better far better than I ever will even though I love it. I ordered lamb biryani and naan which were delicious, though slightly spicy for my sensitive tastebuds.

Queensbury’s a bit of a trek from the centre of town, but I would definitely recommend it!

I’ll blame my wife and sister-in-law for this one. You see, the latter procured for the former a copy of Ms. Allen’s new album, upon which the former proceeded to incessantly play the song in question in the car much to her and the girls’ delight. Dad being a sucker for pretty much anything featuring a banjo found the honky-tonk twang styling from such a mainstream artist compulsively disarming. Ms. Allen CD was henceforth exchanged for the regular Barney and Winny The Witch CD and the natural order of the universe was once again restored. That was until I stumbled on a behind-the-scenes clip of the making of the video for the song in question whilst compiling my CosmoRocks post.

The video tips the hat to ye ol’ country shows of a bygone era and even has Porter Wagoner introducing the singer. Lily comes across like a smokey 70’s inspired Dusty Springfield with one-piece suit and the finest bangs I’ve seen in a while. It’s seriously cool and now I feel like a dirty old man. But like I said, I blame my wife and sister-in-law.

Oh, I was so bummed when I missed posting this song the first time around. You may have heard Lily Allen on the radio as you did your grocery shopping or ran laps at the gym or turned on the tv. She does make the most insanely hook-happy, airwave friendly little ska-flavored ditties. Anyone so popular on the radio and in the tabloids is deeply suspect to me,  but Lily Allen won me over. First, because she has the adorability of a woodland creature a la Walt Disney combined with a distinctly non-Disneylike guttermouth and a thirst for alcoholic misadventure that almost rivals the great Wino herself. Those things, appealing as they are, I can take or leave. What matters is that Lily Allen happens to be one of the wittiest songwriters I’ve heard in a long, long time. Pretty girls so rarely have a sense of humor, sorry to say, that I’m prepared to fall in love with anyone so lovely and snarky as Lily.

Just a little poor excuse for not writing for such a long time: studying! I enjoy it, though. The Video Production module especially! I still have loads to do as I’m working with my group on press conference that will take place in a week and a half, so I’m here just to post a couple of new music videos you may enjoy. I have quite a few drafts of nice posts (at least I find them interesting), but I can’t find time to finish them… Hopefully, I will find some time just after I’m done with this conference. Have Jaxxes ever made a poor music video? If they did, I must have missed it – let me know about it, please. I absolutely love this one, it’s so cosy! Simple, colourful, and engrossing. And funny – maybe not in a way that you burst with laughter, but I’m sure you’ll smile a bit (at least inside) while watching it.

Keep an eye on Tomek Ducki who directed that music video, he’s a really talented guy. His videos on his vimeo profile are worth looking at, just give it a shot – click here (I highly recommend ‘Life Line – Életvonal’ – a short movie with touching story and great visuals).

Finally, the song. Brilliant. That’s why I love Basement Jaxx: there is something special about each and every of their songs. No exception here. Irresistably catchy melody, killer beat, and most importantly – soul. Perfection.

Lily and Greg Kurstin created an amazing album this year, here’s just another single to prove that. Good concept for a music video; I really liked it, even though not much was happening in there.
I  hope Lily wasn’t serious about quitting the music industry! Who’d be voice of our generation then?
