Nu-i bai.

In tetiera scaunului in fata, observ una bucata tembelizor. Buuun. Si pe deasupra este si aprins. Excelent. Nu-i bai.

Mi-a placut! Partea nasoala e ca atunci cand ma intorc, tre’ sa „returnez” orele castigate acum. Asta e viata, asa-i in tenis.

In curand, o sa va povestesc aventurile din Peru, prima tara vizitata in excursia aceasta. Chiar aventuri! Asteptati si o sa vedeti.

Pana atunci, sa fiti iubiti si fericiti.

Hello,

I will be blogging about my gap year abroad when I was sixteen and spent a year abroad in South America, I hope people will find them interesting.

Please let me know what you think and thank you for reading,

owj44

My Peruvian Adventure (P.1)

Leaving home alone

If I thought getting on a plane was a big step to take in conquering my fears it soon became clear to me that stepping off it into a completely different culture and foreign land was something that I had not properly considered before boarding the aircraft from Heathrow to Lima in the first place.

The day before I left I decided to cook a bacon sandwich in my parents’ kitchen. Spending several days in Miami children’s hospital is something I certainly hadn’t expected to be doing half way on my travels. Having an Aga is great when it works as it was intended, but when it doesn’t and has trouble producing enough heat to cook the simplest of dishes it’s another story… food poisoning they later told me in hospital.

I was sixteen; fresh faced and just finished my GCSE’s. The idea of going abroad for a year to learn a foreign language and a new culture was one of the most unconventional things I had ever heard of, so naturally I was interested. I had never been one to conform to the normalities of life at school. I spent several years studying Spanish at school but had yet to master the basics. So when I arrived at Lima airport, welcomed by a host of unfriendly Peruvian taxi drivers harassing me for what I suspected was my custom, it wasn’t exactly reassuring or comforting. I landed in the late hours into the airport in Lima; the lights of the city looked exactly like those in England, which eased my anxieties of the year ahead until I returned to England. I was planning on taking every day as it came, a strategy that I had already adopted in my former life in England. I silently wondered how different it could be from what I called home. From the air it appeared that this foreign land I was about to spend the next twelve months in at least had some of the western comforts I was used to, such as electricity and it wasn’t the desolate landscape I had created in my over active imagination during the flight from Miami to Lima. I had no knowledge of Peru before I left, I simply knew I needed a change from my current life and seized the first opportunity that came my way. A radical but necessary action and opportunity I thought impossible not to act upon. It was an adventure to me like the ones I had read about in books when I was younger and I too wanted to explore, as well as getting to know the real me and having that sense of freedom I yearned for just like all those characters in my books.

In hindsight I suppose there were several reasons I decided I had to do something considered so unorthodox, the most compelling reason for my swift departure from my comfortable and tranquil life was the poor relationship with my family. The reaction I generally received from the majority of people who knew I had decided to go was that I was being silly. Why not do my Alevels and then go? Looking back on my situation then I had every advantage in life and I could see why some people thought I was throwing it all away. I was from a middle class family with the comforts that were accompanied by that life style. Why would I give it up to go and live in a third world country for a year? In truth, I felt I needed an escape, to prove to myself as well as my family that I wasn’t incapable of taking the initiative and equally capable of using my intuition to get through life.

This 97-year-old woman from Huarez, a mountain town at the foot of the Cordillera Blanca’s (which I visited and blogged about months back) broke out in hysterics when Fiorella mentioned Pishtaco’s to which she referred to me as a “ufo”, a person from outer space…

This popular spot on the coast of Lima has its very own cliff diving monk who re-enacts a story of a monk who fell in love and then killed himself by jumping into the rocky waters at this very spot. He does it for change. Every 5 minutes.

Nothing like askew cleavage and cocaine to get u going on a Sunday afternoon right?

The bags are full of coca leaves. If you add 20 liters of GAS and an assortment of other nasty stuff u get the white stuff.

The mean temperature has been shown correct to one decimal point in the record whereas figures for 2007 are shown in round figures. So I have rounded off the mean temp. figures too, for proper comparison.

Except in a few cases, there is remarkable similarity in temperature recorded 200 years ago and now ! This exposes the fallacy of global warm-mongers. In big cities like bombay the increase in temp may be due to huge concrete forests constructed and this can in no way be called global.

ANALYSIS OF TEMPERATURE DATA

Figures speak the truth. The temperature data, comparing previous periods with the current period in respect of Indian and foreign cities are available in the statements above. Statement-1 shows temperature of Indian cities (both coastal and inland).

These have been collected from the meteorological department library at Mausam Bhawan, Delhi.

You will see that in the cities mentioned below, the temperature has remained stable during the last 50 years.

Bhuj, Bhawnagar, Surat, Punjim, Honavar, Alapuzha, Kakinada, Port Blair, Vishakhapatnam, Kolkata (temperature has actually decreased by 3 degrees), Bhubneswar (decreased by 3 degrees), Ajmer, Pune, Bangalore, Agartala, Alhabad, Kota, Madurai, Koimbature, Kolhapur, Udaipur, Nagpur.

The increase in temperature by 5 degrees in Mumbai is glaring, especially when we see the temperature in Surat remaining stable. In other words, for Mumbai the reasons my be local and not global. This requires investigation. My guess is that the huge increase in concrete buildings in Mumbai has contributed to the increase in temperature.

So far, I have been speaking about the maximum temperature. A scrutiny of the minimum temperatures reveals a certain trend of distinct increase.

Bhuj, Bhavnagar, Mumbai, Ajmer, Pune, Hyderabad, Udaipur and Kanpur show increase in minimum temperature by 3 degree. If you total the minimum temperatures of all the cities, then and now, there is an increase of 20degrees in respect of 15 inland stations whereas the maximum temperature in respect of the same stations show a decrease of 8 degrees. It should be remembered that the minimum temperature are recorded during winter months (December, January) when the sun is far away in the Southern hemisphere and this cannot be assigned to the heat radiated from the sun. Mr. Milner has also written about the winter becoming milder over a period of time. In my younger days, I use to find it difficult to take bath in cold water in winter in Delhi. Now, excepting some days of severe cold mostly caused by heavy snowfall in the Himalayas, the water is not so cold. The obvious inference is that this is actually global defreezing caused by geothermal energy.

Statement 2 shows temperature variation over a wider period of 200 years. The figures for the previous period have been taken from Milner’s book which was published in 1853. As these figures are in Fahrenheit scale, current figures too are shown in the same scale. The figures in respect of the following stations indicate stability.

Cairo, Algiers, Cincinnati, New York, Beijing (decrease of 3 degree), Paris Dublin, Copenhagen (decrease of 6 degree), Quebec, Petersburg, Bordeaux, Vienna (decrease of 4 degrees) – 12 out of 20 cities. London, Geneva and Paris show exceptional increase. However, it should be remembered that the increase is over a period of 200 years.

A word of caution: the current data have been extracted from the website “World Weather Information Service” and so the authenticity has to be verified independently.

A very reliable and scientific method for evaluation of the temperature of the globe, is latitude wise mean temperatures. Milner’s book shows 29 degree centigrade at equator, gradually and linearly decreasing to zero degree centigrade at the poles. I am unable to get corresponding figures for the current period. However, I could see from the website that figures remain almost constant, even though the figures for the polar region, now shows as approaching minus 20 degree centigrade. This may be due to better technology being employed by scientific team exploring the polar regions. I have calculated the value of current mean temperatures in respect of a few stations, comparing this value with that shown in Milner’s book. These are given in statement 3.

MELTING OF POLAR ICE CAP

The density of water at zero degrees centigrade is 0.9999 grams per cm. The density of ice at zero degree centigrade is 0.9150. In other words, 1 cc of ice weights only 0.91 gm and hence will displace only 0.915cc of water, when the ice is floating in water. When the ice float, almost the whole of body sinks below the surface of water, expect a small portion projecting above the surface. In the North Pole area, there is no land. The crust of the earth forms a huge bowl filled with seawater and a huge mass of ice floating in it just like an ice cube placed in a bowl of water. The volume of ice submerged below the ice may be almost 9 times more than the icecap which we observe above the surface of water. The molecules covering the underwater portion of the icecap absorb heat from the sea water in which it floats and melt into water. This is a continuous process happening round the clock, allover the year, irrespective of summer or winter. As I have explained in my booklet, the necessary energy is supplied by the earth itself. The role of the Sun which shines only for a limited period is too insignificant to have any impact on this process. As the density of water is more than that of ice, the volume of water generated by the melting of ice is less than that of water originally occupied by the ice block in the ratio 9999:9150. Therefore the sea level will actually come down because of the melting process. In practice, this may not happen because of the continuous deposition of snow in the polar region which will continuously push down the ice cap.

A lot has been talked about the rising of sea level because of Global warming. This is a misconception. In some places, the sea level goes up and in other places, it recedes. This phenomenon has been extensively discussed in Milner’s geography.

My contention can be tested by a simple experiment. Place ice cubes in a tumbler and fill it with water until the water overflows. Leave it until all the ice melts. Watch for any overflow of water during this process.

I quote from Milner-page-513

Excessive summers

In 763 the summer was so hot that the springs dried up.

In 870 the heat was so intense ,that near Worms the reapers dropped dead in the fields.

In 993 and again in 994,it was so hot that the corn and fruits were burnt up.

The year 1000 was so hot and dry ,that, in Germany ,the pools of water disappeared ,and the fish ,being left in the mud ,bred pestilence.

In 1022 the heat was so excessive ,that both men and cattle were struck dead.

In 1130 the earth yawned with drought. Springs and rivers disappeared ,and even the Rhine was dried up in Alsace.

In 1159 not a drop of rain fell in Italy after the month of May.

The year 1171 was extremely hot in Germany.

In 1232 the heat was so great ,especially in Germany, that it is said that eggs were roasted in the sands.

In 1260 ,many of the Hungarian soldiers died of excessive heat at the famous battle fought near Buda.

The consecutive years of 1276 and 1277 were so hot and dry as to occasion a great scarcity of fodder.

The years 1293 and 1294 were extremely hot ;and so were likewise 1303 and 1304,both the Rhine and the Danube having dried up.

In 1333 the corn fields and vineyards were burnt up.

The years 1393 and 1394 were excessively hot and dry.

In 1447 the summer was extremely hot.

In the successive years 1473 and 1474 the whole earth seemed on fire. In Hungary , a person might wade across the Danube

The four consecutive years 1538, 1539 ,1540 ,and 1541 were excessively hot ;and the rivers dried up.

In1556 the drought was so great that the springs failed. In England wheat rose from 8 shillings to 53 shillings a quarter.

The years 1615 and 1616 were very dry all over Europe.

In 1646 it was excessively hot.

In1652 the warmth was very great, the summer being the driest ever known in Scotland. A total eclipse had happened that year, on Monday the 24th of March, which hence received the appellation of ‘Mirk Monday.’

The summer of 1679 was extremely hot.It is related ,that one of the minions tyranny ,who in that calamitous period, harassed the poor Presbyterians in Scotland with captious questions, having asked a shepherd in Fife ,whether the killing of a notorious Sharp, Archbishop of St.Andrews, which had happened in May,was murder; he replied , that he could not tell, but there had been fine weather ever since.

The year 1700 was excessively warm, and the two following years were of the same description.

In 1718 the weather was extremely hot and dry all over Europe. The air felt so oppressive that all the theatres were shut in Paris. Scarcely any rain fell for the space of nine months and the springs and rivers were dried up. The following year was equally hot. The thermometer at Paris rose to 98 degree Fahrenheit. The grass and corn were quite parched.

In some places the fruit trees blossomed two and three times.

Both the years 1723 and 1724 were dry and hot.

The year 1745 was remarkably warm and dry; but the following year was still hotter insomuch that the grass withered, and the leaves dropped from the trees .Neither rain nor dew fell for several months ; and ,on the continent, prayers were offered up in all the churches to implore the bounty of refreshing showers.

In 1748 the summer was again very warm.

In 1754 it was likewise extremely warm.

The years 1760 and 1761 were both of them remarkably hot, and so was the year 1763.

In 1774 it was excessively hot and dry.

Both the years 1778 and 1779 were warm and very dry.

The year 1788 was also very hot and dry ;and of the same character was 1811 ,famous for its excellent vintage, and distinguished by the appearance of a brilliant comet.

Whilst for some years now it’s been possible to send flowers to someone in Peru from another country

Whilst for some years now it’s been possible to send flowers to someone in Peru from another country the development of a network of online florists now gives you greater control over the flowers that are delivered on your behalf. So, if you’re currently studying abroad but want to send flowers into Peru, then searching for an online florist to choose the flowers to send – is definitely the best thing to do. If you want to, you can even check online what flowers are blooming in Peru at the time you place your order.

Sending flowers without going to a florist.

Ever since there have been reliable postal and delivery services people have
been arranging for flowers to be ordered and delivered on their behalf, without having to personally go into a flower store. Obviously, before motorized transport became common, the time taken for a letter requesting delivery of flowers and the actual delivery of the flowers themselves, could well mean that the date they were required for might have passed – and/or the flowers would arrive ‘past their best’! The development of the telegraph and then the telephone systems speeded up the process of requesting flowers to be delivered; however, the person sending the flowers often had little control over the flowers or arrangement of them that was actually sent on their behalf. Today’s modern internet florists can not only arrange for you to send flowers to someone in Peru – but will allow you to choose exactly which flowers and arrangements are sent on your behalf.

Using an internet florist to send flowers online.

An internet florist will have an online catalogue that you can search through to choose the flowers you will send to Peru. Regardless of the occasion they will have a simple menu driven system to assist you in finding an appropriate selection of flowers; be it for a bereavement, Valentines Day, Mothers Day, a birthday, any other celebration or just to show someone that you really care and are thinking of them. You should also be able to choose from a selection of flower arrangements such as a bouquet
or a spray. Alternatively the flowers could be sent in a water-bulb, pot or
glass vase; that the recipient can keep and use for other flower deliveries they receive. As well as sending flowers many internet florists will arrange for the delivery of potted plants and plants in wicker baskets. If chosen carefully pot plants can be a longer lasting alternative to sending flowers online; depending on the skill of the recipient in looking after indoor plants, or re-planting them outdoors. Having selected the flowers you want to send a good internet florist will be able to accommodate a variety of delivery dates and times. Whilst obviously the more advanced notice of a delivery date and time, the better it is for the florist; a good quality internet florist will be able to arrange delivery of the flowers you send to meet your specifications. As a general rule of thumb flower deliveries can be
guaranteed within 24 hours from anywhere in the world to Peru. Even better, a high quality and reputable internet florist will quite probably be able to deliver flowers in Peru – the same day that they are ordered from anywhere else in the world. However, please be aware that varying international time zones could render a statement like ‘same day delivery of flowers’ meaningless. When processing your order to send flowers to Peru, you’ll find you’re able to pay online with any of the major credit and debit cards. Be sure to check that the florist’s website is secure for making a
online payments.

Gifts to send with flowers.

All companies are always looking for market extensions to their main products and online florists are no exception to this. Subsequently you might also consider sending a gift with the flowers. Classic options here are; to send balloons with flowers to celebrate a birthday or a ‘cute’ Teddy Bear or chocolates for a loved one. If you’re sending flowers to Peru for someone
recovering from illness or an accident; baskets of fruit can also be arranged.

Limenians head south on the weekends to their beach houses. We checked out Fiorella’s families place (a real cool, sorta of Frank Lloyd Wright/Greek style), swam, got burned and then headed out for a delicious lunch of fried fish and a tacu-tacu, a bean and rice dish with crab meat in a yellow cream sauce. The fish dish, besides the shrimp, had calamari, octopus, mussels and sea found miscellanea and is served with Yuca fries which are really tasty and much lighter than potato.

The road to the south (and beyond) is the 29,000 mile long Pan-American highway. The billboards along the 90km stretch we did were like studies in minimalism and pop-art. As was the mural in the parking lot of the restaurant which could have doubled as a Lichtenstein or Warhol.

Starting in 1570 the Spanish church used torture to punish different heretics here in Lima. And a startling high percentage of the people they tortured turned out to be Jews. That info changed my attitude while photographing these pathetic recreations. It was yet another reminder of the tough times jews have had in the last 4000 years. Didn’t expect to find that here in South America. Luckily, the amount of people who were victims of this psychopathic religious behavior only numbered in the thousands. The museum is in the original churches torture and courts building which later became the Peruvian congress building. The tiles pictured are original and date back to the 1700’s. The skull and cross-bones is 300 year old graffiti that comes from the wall of a cell in the basement.

What do u know! A form of WaterBoarding, the torture technique the Bush administration used during their “War on Terror”. Did our religious zealots learn it from these religious zealots?

300 year old tile work in the courtyard of the church’s torture building. Startling the idea that they could mix so easily the crafts of human cruelty and art so seamlessly.

The skulls image below is from the catacombs of the Monastery of San Francisco. 70,000 people where buried there.

Some amazing tile work from the church.
