There’s a lot of file-sharing programs out there: Limewire and Kazaa to name a few. Most of the things discussed in this quick note are for Mac users (which you will be one day). Ok, I’m going to break it down really quickly and give you the links and information you need to optimize your iTunes, iPod, or party experience.

1. Audio Hijack Pro – (Mac Only) – This utility has unlimited free usage for 10 minute recordings, and for $35 more you can unlock it to go unlimited. WHAT IT DOES: It allows you to grab the audio stream from anything playing on your computer: a music video on youtube, a BBC broadcast live (I love Trance), part of a song or mix you already have but can’t get enough of, quotes from movies playing on your computer, or even Gchat. This works well with:

2. Dubset – www.dubset.com – FREE -  This is  a phenomenal website. It used to be hard to get good mixes, and often you’d get them randomly and not knowing what to expect from DJ’s you’d never heard of. With Dubset, it’s all premium DJ’s and their best mixes. It has a calendar and you can see who had a set last saturday, what type of mix it is (Electronica/Hip-Hop, 80’s/Mashup, etc). Their selection is unparalleled as far as I’ve found being a fan of good mixes for years. Before my tastes were usually confined to trance and techno, but this site should open some doors for you. THEORETICALLY, you could unlock Audio Hijack and grab any mix you wanted from the site, add it to iTunes, and put it on your iPod for your next run up and down the California coastline.

3. Pandora – www.pandora.com – FREE – This is a great website which most of you have probably heard of but I’m posting anyway to be thorough. Technicians go over every song and ascribe to it 200 traits (called genes), and your thumbs up/thumbs down let’s Pandora figure out what about the music you actually like that you didn’t even know you liked. This is great for setting up a lot of different stations, or instant make-out music if you’re in a hurry (Coldplay channel). Also theoretically works with Audio Hijack, but you have to be on your toes about pausing the song right before it starts if you’re going to get the whole song. Theoretically.

4. Musicovery – www.musicovery.com – FREE (kind of) – This is a cool website because it allows you to pick music by time period, mood, genre. Pretty cool and awesome graphics. I’ve just started playing around with it, but that’s mainly because I’m stuck on Dubset. They try to charge you if you want to move to the next song though (if you want to take the step and become a premium member).

5. Podcasts – Go into iTunes, podcasts, search – There’s a very high number of very high quality weekly podcasts which are 1-2 hour mixes from all over the world. My personal favorites are Dave Pearce and Judge Jules who are BBC DJ’s that have weekly podcasts. You can subscribe to one or two of these and then, presto, you have an hour of new music to work out to each week. The only thing is that you need to move the podcast to a playlist (e.g. Get your run on). Also, with Audio Hijack you can grab certain 3 minute segments from a 1 hour trance section (you can hijack iTunes too!).

6. Zshare – www.zshare.net – FREE – No sign-up required – Taken in tandem with Audio Hijack and Dubset, this site allows you to quickly and anonymously upload short music files, really long music files, videos, photos, anything, like √. This is great for passing files back and forth quickly and efficiently.

7. Radioshift – www.rogueamoeba.com/radioshift/ – (Mac only) With this tool you can record any AM/FM or internet radio from anywhere in the world on your schedule. So if I’m living in LA, but I want to record 1010 wins (1010 AM NYC news station, “you give us 22 minutes, we’ll give you the world”) for 22 minutes once a day, here’s the way.

8. An external hard drive – with so much music, you’re not going to want to have it slowing down your computer. Although with Audiohijack I’m not sure if you have a choice.

Primero y principal, deberían de tener el programa E-mule, pueden conseguirlo desde su página web oficial o desde este mismo blog clickeando aqui.

Algo novedoso que tiene E-mule es su capacidad de añadir nuevos servidores a medida que éstos sean abiertos, reemplazando los viejos y garantizando una constante existencia y disponibilidad de material de todo tipo… pero esta lista no se actualiza automáticamente, y para garantizarnos ambas, disponibilidad y velocidad, deberemos realizar ciertos pasos que listo a continuación:

1) Primero y principal, deberíamos descargar el archivo server.met, recomiendo esta página pero ¡CUIDADO! como todo lo gratuito, tiene su vuelta: No visites esta página si estás con menores al lado o gente sensible, ya que el sitio donde podrás descargar el server.met tiene banners eróticos/pornográficos como propagandas. Es necesario advertir de eso.

2) El apartado tendrá “All servers” (Todos los servidores), “Best Servers” (Mejores servidores) y “Connect List” (Lista de conexiones). Si ya instalaste E-Mule, lo cual es muy fácil, lo que deberás hacer es en “Best Servers” elegir “Add to E-mule”. Deberás esperar unos segundos, si la seguridad de Windows o algun antivirus/firewall te advierten que otro programa está tratando de abrir E-mule, simplemente autoriza la operación.

3) Si todo salió correctamente, al abrir E-Mule verás que la lista realmente se ha hecho más frondosa. Ahora, deberías conectarte al que tenga mayor cantidad de usuarios, por eso en la columna “Usuarios” harás dos clicks lentos, o los que sean necesarios para que al lado de la columna “Usuarios” quede un triángulo apuntando hacia abajo (Lo que significa “Ordenando de mayor a menor”).

4) Ahora simplemente unite a un servidor que se encuentre relativamente alto en la lista. Cuando se conecte, andá a la pestaña Kad (Al lado de “Servidores”) y poné simplemente “Conectar”. Esperá un minuto para que consiga varias conexiones, y ya tenés E-Mule básicamente configurado para descargar a buena velocidad, pero ¿Es la máxima acaso?. Si simplemente querés bajar, podés parar acá, o bien, seguir con el próximo tutorial de pocos pasos y buenos resultados.

¿Todavía no estás conforme? ¿Querés exprimir hasta el último kb de tu conexión? Me parece muy bien, por eso pagás esa velocidad y no una menor, para usarla. Vamos a ver cómo aprovecharlo:

1) Apenas instalás E-Mule, aparecerá un cartel que te pedirá elegir tu tipo de conexión. El haber elegido mal este detalle, provocará un descontrol general. No se puede deshacer, por lo que hay que instalar E-Mule de nuevo ¡Pero lo descargado no se pierde!.

2) En Preferencias -> Servidor, activa las opciones “Control Inteligente de ID Baja” y “Usar sistema de prioridades”. La ID baja es cuando estás siendo restringido por una mala conexión debido a un error en la conexión propia o en el servidor, y el sistema de prioridades incurre en establecer prioridades para los archivos (Ahora van a ver por qué)

3) En Preferencias -> Archivos, activa la opción “Intentar transferir partes completas en todas las subidas”, esto hará que no pases simplemente retazos de una parte que otro usuario también está pasando, sino una parte completa, tarda más, pero recordá “Cuánto más subís, más y mejor bajás” ¿Por qué? Vean el siguiente punto.

4) En Preferencias -> Opciones Adicionales, activá “Usar sistema de créditos (Se premia a los que más suben)”, esto te permitirá bajar más rápido cuánto más subas. Sencillo y muy efectivo.

5) Comenzá bajando archivos pequeños y populares, como por ejemplo el Winrar, o algún antivirus, luego dirígete a “Compartidos”, selecciona todos tus archivos (Y acá entra en juego el sistema de prioridades) y haceles click izquierdo, en el menú elegí “Prioridad de subida”, y a absolutamente TODO lo que tengas, ya sea ahora o a posteriori, ponele “Lanzamiento”. ¿Qué significa? Que será enviado lo antes posible a quién lo solicite, lo subirá rápido. ¿A qué te recuerda? Exacto, cuánto más subas, más bajás. Ahora, hecho esto, cada vez que estés bajando un archivo, no olvides hacerle click derecho también y seleccionar Prioridad Alta, ya que vos los estás compartiendo con esa prioridad, merecés bajarlos de la misma forma.

Some of you surely know LimeWire if you often download songs or videos. LimeWire will allow you to download a song with a fast and efficient time. LimeWire also makes you stay in one software instead of navigating from one website to another website, searching audio or video.

LimeWire is very easy to use because you only need to search for songs according to the band, album, or song and instantly download it via LimeWire to be kept on file in the LimeWires’ folder in My Document.

LimeWire gives two options of display namely a compact and also lists. In a compact, you’ll see the circular in the sense that a large but typical. I recommend this display for more comfortable viewing. However, if you likes to download dozens of songs at once, then I suggest a list of display for easily accessible.

LimeWire can be downloaded via the official website: http://www.limewire.com. LimeWire offers three options for download. For free, choose Basic. But if you really need LimeWire to download songs for particular reasons, download the Pro because it has more quality services and features which more valuable and efficient than Basic.

A group of young friends sat around a coffee table the front room of a one-bedroom apartment. The group, with drinks in hand, listened to the thick waves of sound and soft crackling disruptions resonating from speakers as the vinyl record spun on the old turntable. The scene could have taken place in the 1970’s, but it happened last week.

Danielle Ezell, 20, invited me and a few other guests to a house gathering to celebrate music on vinyl. Ezell and other guests from Chicago brought records to her Lakeview apartment to share in this seemingly old musical platform.

Vinyl record sales increased 89 percent between 2007 and 2008 up from 85.8 percent from 2006 and 2007, according to Nielsen SoundScan, who provides records of sales data in the U.S. and Canada. Sales data for 2009 is expected to reach more than 2.8 million.

Ezell, a Colombia College student, first began listening to music on the vinyl after she researched the vinyl community at Dave’s Records, a vinyl only store on Clark Street in Chicago’s north side, for a class assignment.

While studying the costumers at Dave’s Records, she noticed what owner Dave Crain said he has notice for the past five years. Younger people are visiting his record store in greater numbers.

“A lot of young people would go, ‘Oh, you’re vinyl only?’ and walk out.” Crain, has been in the record business for 25 years, said. “Now they say, ‘that’s cool.’”

While vinyl may only account for a small percentage of the music industry’s total sales, around 1 or 2 percent, its sales are on the rise. Nielson SoundScan predicts vinyl sales will reach 2.8 million units in 2009, up from 1.9 million in 2008.

Most sales are digital singles and albums

“When I download music I download millions of songs at a time.” Ezell said. “Vinyl has more meaning because when I buy a record its because I like it and I can hold onto it. Its not some invisible file.”

In the mp3 age, music listeners have an infinite number of songs at their fingertips, giving a new meaning to collection.

Crain agrees. Younger people missed out on the physical connection to music with CDs because they are smaller and indicate a digital era. Album covers are less tangible and listeners connect to them in a less physical way.

MP3s are even less physical, a music listener can obtain collections of music larger than all the tracks on every album in Crain’s vinyl store all on the hard-drive of their computer.

“It’s more personal when you’re collecting vinyl than 200,000 mp3s,” Crain said. “There is something about taking a collection in a physical way. A lot of kids connect to that part of it.”

While their collections may not include as many vinyl records as mp3 files, young people are collection their favorite songs on vinyl. About 30 percent of the top 200 artists are available on vinyl, according to Crain.

“Even if I have all my favorite songs on my iPod, I like to have the record because it’s a physical form.” Ezell said. “I like leafing through my records rather than scrolling through my iPod.”

What happens to CDs?

As for CDs, Crain believes they are on their “last, last leg.” Crain cites limited shelf space in retail stores as a clear indicator.

The music industry told consumers in the late 80s through the 90s that CDs were the new and right platform for listening to music, according to Crain. Vinyl sales dipped because of that. But in the age of Limewire and iPods, CDs are obsolete. And because the sound quality varies with digital music. Vinyl’s authentic sound, ripe with crackles and fuzz, makes them excellent options for listeners looking for genuine sound.

“Music was meant to be recorded on vinyl,” 19-year-old Carol English said. “I think there is no emotional connection to CDs. CDs are shit; they’re worthless.”

English began listening to her mother’s turntable vinyl when she discovered her Grateful Dead albums.

The vinyl platform is here to stay

Whether teens are dusting off a turntable that formerly belonged to a parent or buying a new MP3 capable turntable, Crain says its great they’re are buying records for them. He will continue to stock vinyl records only.

“If there are pressing plants around, then they’ll keep pressing vinyl.” Crain said. “I think there will always be vinyl stores even if they stopped pressing vinyl. There will still be people collecting.”

English, whose collection includes more than 100 vinyl records, says she will keep collection vintage and new vinyl records for the rest of her life. Like many young teens she feels a nostalgic connection to the past, even though she admits nostalgia is not the right word.

“Want to hear “Sounds of the Humpback Whale?” English asked while she put the vinyl version of the album “Bee Hives” by Broken Social Scene on her vintage turntable. “Nothing gets the party started like putting on some vinyl.”

“If you were a famous musician, singer or rapper, do you think downloading music is better than buying it in the stores? Is Kid Rock being serious?  Tell me why.”

I’m listening to The Postal Service on my iPod with the earbuds that came with the device. the infernal things always fall out of my ears. Every few minutes I have to stick them back in. To my right is our old CRT monitor displaying a spybot scan. One of my mom’s co-workers has been having computer trouble and I’ve been going at it all day, figuring out what’s wrong with the thing. After several failed attempts to rectify the problem I finally looked up Windows Enterprise Suite on Google. Big surprise, it’s malware, and a big pain to remove. The only way to get it, is to physically click on the pop-up, go to the website to download it, actually download it, then go through the full install process, and then you have one f’d up computer. I shake my head at how little people actually know about computers.

The perfect operating system for those who know nothing about computers, is Linux, and the only people who know about Linux are the tech-savvy. There are more versions of Linux than one can shake four hundred sticks at, but a simple google search can give you the name of the most popular. Ubuntu, recently updated to version 9.10 (Karmic Koala) is the easiest and most intuitive version of Linux that I’ve used. Either that or Mint, which is like a cousin from the same family. Here are the reasons I would like to push many non-savvy users to consider it:

-There are no viruses.
-It’s free.
-They will ship you a CD for free.
-You can still browse the internet.
-You can still get all your email.
-It comes with Solitaire.
-You can play music.
-There’s support for portable media devices
-You can’t ‘f it up by using limewire
-Better yet, you can’t use limewire!

I’ll bet you use a computer every day and I challenge you to name one thing that I use every day, that I have no clue how to maintain or use effectively. Go ahead, try me.

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I am indeed at home. Coming home always fills me with the impending sense of loss, as if I’m wasting my time. Not doing something here strikes me much harder than it does at school.

Bittorrent is the most common form of file transfer used by computers today. People have there certain favorite tools to use torrents and today I will show you mine and tell you why I think they are best suited for downloading files.

1. uTorrent

uTorrent is a small lightweight Bittorrent client that hardly leaves a system footprint and can be used on fast or slow machines with the same wonderfull results. It only takes 128k system ram and it can be run on a computer as low speced as Windows 95 with 14 meg of ram.

2.Bittorrent

Well what can I say this is the client that started it all. Its the original Bittorrent client coded by Bram Cohem. It installs a DNA moniter which freaks me out a little on your computer. However it is still one of the most well polished as small quick easy Bittorrent clients out there today.

3. Vuze

Vuze is a large Bittorrent client. It has a huge system footprint and I only really reccomend running it on a nice high end desktop comptuer. But the interface makes up for the system footprint. It reminds me of iTunes 8 and I really enjoy using it I reccomend it for all you hardcore Bittorenter’s out there.

4.Deluge

Deluge is just more of the same an easy to use Bittorent client with friendly looks. It leaves a rather small system footprint and is cross platform and works on any system.

5.BitComet

Definitly not my favorite of all the clients listed above due to the ugly interface. But I still use it and it has some very advanced features built it such as video previewing and swarm chatting. If you like Bittorrents and dont care about interfaces but like features check this bad boy out.
