Ninguém sai bem na fita: Sua esposa Altovise, com quem ele teria casado por conveniência, surge como uma bêbada desesperada por dinheiro e atenção, a família Sinatra – conhecida pelo ódio dos filhos do cantor por sua última esposa, Barbara – merece uma advertência de um advogado que os conhecia bem: “respeite os Sinatra mas nunca confie neles”

O livro começa com a morte de Sammy e o roubo de tudo que o cercava – suas joias, fotos e até de seu olho de vidro!!!

No geral, acho que é o caso mais triste de showbiz que eu já li, a história de um homem multitalentoso que se cercou do que havia de pior em termos de advogados, mafiosos, empresários, mulheres e empregados.

Uma passagem surreal (e para mim totalmente delirante, apesar de ser apenas um detalhe do livro): um de seus biógrafos recusa-se a liberar o acesso às entrevistas que fez com Sammy porque ele saberia a identidade real do assassino de … John Kennedy (e mais: Jacqueline teria recorrido a Sinatra para garantir que ela e os filhos não fossem alvo destes assassinos)

I am in a good mood tonight despite the state of play with regards to the farce that is Royal Mail. Why? Because I finally have the two Linda Lovelace books I have been after for ages. Who is Linda Lovelace? She is of the 70’s Deep Throat film fame. No, in fact she WAS Deep Throat.

I am off on a flying visit to the UK  and I can’t wait! I am looking forward to stocking up on food goodies and also visiting Ann Summers: hopefully there will be a sale on as Ann Summers do the most amazing reductions. I am hoping to get some new bras  (I haven’t found any shops that stock big enough cups sizes over here). Perhaps if I went to Marbella or somewhere where most of the women are surgically enhanced I would stand a chance, but then the lingerie will cost a fortune.

Because of my holiday to the UK I prob. won’t get the opportunity to blog or answer any mail. But don’t fear I will sort everything when I get come back to Spain.

As in Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, the shadows cast upon the walls of a wine cellar outline not reality but the truths of those who live them. Little clarity has emerged from Montalcino, even in the light of Italian officials’s findings in their investigation of adulterated wine there. As outside observers, we see only shadows of reality cast upon the walls of Brunello’s caves.

The following interview was conducted last week via email with a young winemaker in Montalcino who works with and for a small family-run estate. S/he has asked me not to reveal her/his name and so I will simply call her/him Deep Throat. Her/his English-language ability allowed her/him to answer the questions in her/his second language. For the sake of immediacy, I have not made any edits whatsoever to the answers. Read them below as I received them at the end of last week. I doubt we’ll ever know the truth about what really happened in Montalcino but I hope this point-of-view (however factual or speculative it may or may not be) helps us to understand the disparity between what we have been told by the wine media and the perceptions and sentiments “on the ground,” as we used to say when I worked at the U.N. Read and digest it for what it’s worth…

Why did the investigation happen in the first place?

The whole bomb came officially out about 16 months ago. Strategically… just few days prior to Vinitaly 2008. You can imagine what kind of backlash this gave to everybody in the appellation. The Brunello collective stand at the fair was like a war zone… Why did it come out? Likely because it was no longer possible to hide the lack of controls by the Consortium or, maybe better, the lack of actions by the Consortium after finding vineyards, cellars and/or wines not conforming to the Brunello production rules.

Was it because banks were checking on vineyards supposedly planted to Sangiovese and used as collateral in loan applications?

Let’s say that this could surely be a factor… many illegal vineyards were planted with big loans or (even worse) with EU funds. Just to give an example: a hectar of Brunello is worth about 500.000 Euros while an IGT one could be around 100-150.000. Do it yourself: this is very simple math! Only the producers were blaimed for the illegal vineyards and/or wines but those very same wines were tasted and passed at the Tasting Commission (official and external). The vineyards were supposedly checked and obviously passed by Officials form the Consortium, from the “Comune”, from the “Provincia” and I ask myself why nobody there was then involved in the investigation…

Now newcomers to Montalcino (Gaja, Frescobaldi, Folonari) are asking for “relaxed” rules and a more flexible set of rules. Screw you! Did you arrive to Montalcino for the idea of producing Brunello or for the value of the land? Be clear and make a choice. Or be nice and… get the hell out of here!

Or was it because “anonymous letters” were sent to the Siena prosecutor by disgruntled Brunello producers?

I have very good reasons to think that The Letter was clearly sent. This is going on a personal level: it is a very personal “faida” between some of the top managers of thee most visible estate in Montalcino (especially on the US market) and one of thee most radical and straight forward producers. Is David hitting Goliath. But I must say that little David was hitting the wrong enemy this time: is not Goliath’s fault if David’s wines are usually NOT conforming to the mandatory analysis due prior to the tasting at the Official Tasting Commission. The wines must conform to the parameters. Period. If they are out, they are out and you should adjust your winemaking method instead of complaining with the rules if they are not according your personal taste. Orelse… go your way without labelling your wine as a Brunello… but like this… the value of David’s bottles is going dramatically down. And David is already in deep shit with sales.

PS Last minute news: David’s estate is now for sale. But he’s asking way too much.

Has your winery been inspected by Treasury officials? What do they do when they inspect the estate? What technical tools do they use? How often do they visit? What are they looking for?

I cannot talk for other people but our tiny estate was checked several times by several different authorities especially in the last 2 years. I don’t know how much other people has been inspected. We ALWAYS conformed and they ALWAYS came back for more. We had: Tresury officials, Consortium inspectors, Ministry of Labour officials, etc. To make it short: you name it… they came! To check everything… I wonder what they have been checking at the other places. There was no way to get out of it with something out of the line. Of course it makes a big difference if you go and inspect a vineyard to check for the different varietals in July or in December… we got checked last week too for the countless time.

Was the issue yields or was the issue Merlot? Is it true that some were using grapes from Apulia?

The issues were several, being the non-Sangiovese grapes the most important one and the yeald per hectar another one. By the beginning of the investigation, I have personally seen a 4 hectars vineyard (supposedly Brunello) litterally destroyed with a Caterpillar by the owner from a day to another; and another one grafted with a new and different varietal (Sangiovese, this time?) in late June (???). I know a very influential Consulting Wine Wizard that, in order to come and make the wine for the estate of one of the past President of the Consortium, strongly demanded (as a condition to accept the job) to plant some ALICANTE grapes for the color. Come and drive around Montalcino in October and look at the leaves… You’ll have fun!

Wines in bulk were a point too. But we must say that: it is absolutely not illegal to buy wine in tanks from somewhere else. Illegal could be the use of it in some certain ways in the cellar. We must also say that: some of this wine could have been (and IT WAS) used illegally, out of the DOC and DOCG rules. You know… quality and quantity rarely match. Following the Brunello rules, you should not exceed 7 tons of grapes per hectar. Let me tell you that, to have a great juice (as Brunello should demand) it’s hard to go over 4-4,5 tons. Figure it out yourself!

As a small producer of traditional-style Brunello, how do you feel you have been treated in a sea of commercial producers?

As a small producer, we have been treated like we had nothing to say. We felt absolutely NOT represented by the Consortium, neither protected. DOCG means that our Appellation of Origin is Controlled and Guaranteed. This was the only supposed role of the Consortium. None of this things was provided by them: oviously NOT the controls, NOT the guarantee and, sometimes, NOT even the origin. So I am asking myself what is the reason of the Consortium to be. Right now, the Consortium is just a cost for a small producer, and it’s giving no advantages at all. Many people will soon leave, I am sure. We asked them how to act to protect ourselves from this situation, we were told to shut up! The big guys are messing around… and we suffer the real damage, being all commonly treated as cheaters. Our reputation is on the line and they could not care less. It’s hard to accept this, especially when they ask you to shut up, I feel I want to raise my voice from the top of the mountain. They have even payed (BIG MONEY) an very high-ended external press office from Milan to… shut up. With our money too… How pathetic!

You are a litterate person: write a few lines about the origin and the history of the word “Consortium” and you will find very little similarity with the recent image of the Consortium of Brunello.

PS. Is there any other kind of Brunello apart traditional? Don’t think so!

Would weather conditions in the dismal 2002 and 2003 vintages have had such an impact on wineries if growing sites were limited to the south and southwest subzones Sant’Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell’Abate and the Montalcino township subzone?

The problem is that many people planted vineyards only for the sake of investement more than for the love of wine and the respect of a tradition. A lot of people arrived to harvest and bottle the wine with no idea on how and where actually sell that wine. This was the main reason for the price drop: fear and unprofessionalism!

Right after the 2002 harvest, everybody apparently agreed on the fact that the vintage was absolutely not good and not suitable for producing Brunello. You could go around and ask producers and they all would tell you that they were not going to release any 2002 Brunello. The fact is that very few people hold to that word: probably 98% of the producers actually released a 2002 and a single real genius (or a magician… previously President of the Consortium but not the one I was telling about before) even released a 2002 Riserva. Come on! Be serious and give me a break… We are talking about integrity here. Or, at least, we are trying… some of us is trying harder than others!

2003 was hard too and this was surely not helping in this moment as the beginning of the scandal hit Montalcino right after the official release of the vintage. so many importers and/or distributors took the chanche to invest -in moment of great financial crisis- in other (cheaper) appellations while waiting for the great 2004 vintage to come out. We must also thank the Consortium for the dangerous overrating of recent vintages that have been generously given too many stars…

About sub-zones, I am a fervent believer! But you, as owner of a vineyard in Torrenieri, would want this to be written on your label? And you, as a regular but somehow skilled customer, would prefer to buy a Brunello from the sub-zone of Castelnuovo dell’Abate or Sant’Angelo, or one from the lowest vineyards in Torrenieri? You already know the answer: that’s why sub-zones of Brunello are never gonna happen.

What is the future of Montalcino? Will other grapes be allowed?

The future of Montalcino is unwritten. I personally hope for the sudden death of the Consortium and the birth of a free association of producers with total dedication to PR and promotion and absolutely no role in the controls. I would like the controls to be completely made by State offices with less bureaucracy and very fast times of reaction to needs and/or infraction.

Allowing other grapes would mean to betray Mr. Biondi Santi original vision and dream. Dream that became reality and privilege for all of us. Allowing zelig grapes would kill the reality of a truly blessed terroir. We are always filling our mouth with the words “tradition” and “heritage”. It’s now time to stand tall behind our words. I have been doing this since forever. Like this they were doing at my estate before me. Like this they will do at my estate after me. The password is only one. Sangiovese! That’s the true reason why this land is so valuable. Why are they all so blinded by other less important things?

Danach war Porno nie mehr derselbe. “Deep Throat” war der Beginn des Pornofilms als Massenmedium, der erste spielfilmlange Porno mit einer durchgehenden Handlung.

Von Gerard Damiano in wenigen Tagen heruntergedreht, feierte der Film im Juni 1972 in einem richtigen New Yorker Kino Premiere. Gleichzeitig landesweit in 300 Kinos vorgeführt, schlug “Deep Throat” Hollywoods Blockbuster der Saison, “Cabaret” und “Shaft II”, um Längen. Innerhalb kürzester Zeit avancierte der Streifen zum Phänomen: Erstmals zeigte man einen Hardcore-Film landesweit – und Prominente wie Frank Sinatra, Warren Beatty und Truman Capote bekannten sich als Zuschauer.
Auf einmal war Porno Tagesgespräch und schick: Paare gingen gemeinsam in einen Porno, und niemand schämte sich, dabei gesehen zu werden. “Esquire” schrieb: “Wer ihn nicht gesehen hatte, galt irgendwie als rückständig.” Das Pornopublikum bestand nicht länger aus der Regenmantelbrigade.

“Deep Throat” beförderte den Pornofilm ins Reich der Popkultur. Der für nur 22.000 Dollar gedrehte Streifen spielte mehr als 100 Millionen ein. Er gehört zu den Top-ten-Moneymakern der Filmgeschichte und spielt in derselben Liga wie “Star Wars” oder “Titanic”. Der weibliche Star Linda Lovelace wurde zur internationalen Berühmtheit und gerngesehener Gast in Talk-Shows. Der Begriff porn chique entstand, und deep throat wurde zu einem geflügelten Wort und feststehendem Ausdruck der Umgangssprache.

Gerard Damiano era un parrucchiere per signora. Per sua stessa ammissione durante le ore passate a dialogare con le donne, tra un taglio e una tinta, avrebbe scoperto tutte le pieghe e tutti i segreti della sensualità femminile.

Talmente satollo dell’argomento decise, un bel giorno, di mollare phon e bigodini per darsi all’arte cinematografica. Il risultato, primo di una lunga serie, fu “Gola profonda”, il film porno più famoso del mondo. Costato appena 25.000 dollari ne incassò, in prima visione nella sola New York, più di un milione; a tutt’oggi la visione del film è un rito di iniziazione maschile, nonchè un punto di riferimento culturale per l’intellettualità. Il successo della pellicola è legato sia al momento storico, sull’onda della nuova cosapevolezza sessuale generata dal ‘68, sia ad un mix di divertimento, leggerezza e di un montaggio povero ma fatto con estrema genialità accostando, ad esempio, al raggiunto orgasmo della protagonista, un tripudio di fuochi d’artificio.

Già, perchè è l’orgasmo il vero protagonista del film; Linda Lovelace non riesce ad averlo, nonostante l’impegno profuso. La spiegazione, fantasiosa ma efficace, è che la nostra eroina non ha il clitoride al suo posto, bensì in gola. Lo specialista che cura la Lovelace si prodigherà per la sua guarigione e assumerà Linda come infermiera, facendole unire l’utile al dilettevole e al terapeutico.

Il film è fatto da persone comuni; l’attore porno medio nei primi anni ‘70 non aveva nulla di speciale, a differenza degli adoni e delle perfettissime ragazze che oggi sono tanto in voga nel circuito della pornografia “normale”; fa quasi tenerezza vedere quelle imperfezioni, quei chili di troppo, quelle stempiature. Ma il messaggio era chiaro; la sessualità, che non era e non doveva essere solo produzione seriale di figli, era alla portata di tutti. Gola profonda è la trasposizione dell’ideale democratico nella pornografia; tutti possono accedere al godimento, non occorre, necessariamente, essere degli adoni dei ricchi o degli altolocati.

Inoltre la Lovelace fece epoca. Come fece osservare Gerard Damiano in una successiva intervista “A quel tempo non esisteva neanche una parola per definire quello che Linda sapeva fare …”. Dopo Linda Lovelace quella parola divenne un sottogenere del porno, oltre ad acquistare carattere di sacralità.

Il film ebbe tanto successo e tante clonazioni che dovette essere rieditato con il nome di “la vera gola profonda” ed entrò nella storia politica prestando il nome all’informatore che, con le sue rivelazioni, portò il presidente Nixon alle dimissioni in seguito allo scandalo Watergate.

Il rovescio della medaglia fu che Linda Lovelace non vide mai un soldo. I suoi proventi furono dissipati dal suo ex compagno che, a quanto sembra, la costrinse ad accettare di girare il film a suon di schiaffi. Linda, successivamente, non ebbe un buon rapporto con il mondo del porno e morì in un incidente stradale nel 2002.

Ma a noi piace pensare a Gola Profonda, con le sue luci e le sue ombre, come un punto essenziale della cultura del ‘900, non solo come un’esperimento nel settore della pornografia. Ad un livello filmico, ripetiamo, nonostante il budget ridotto, il prodotto è ottimo, ben montato, ben interpretato, ben diretto.

Salutiamo con affetto quelle idee che ci hanno cresciuto e che oggi svaniscono, purtroppo, strette da un lato dall’onda lunga del cattolicesimo militante e dall’altra dal moralismo piccolo borghese di tanta sinistra radical chic.

On The Beach

It began with a Lincoln Continental and a bottle of Mateus Rose. It ended in a drug-addled implosion that signified LA noire’s final trippy comedown, writhing on its belly like a hallucinogenic serpent, baying for blood.

What transpired in between these two fabled bookends is the story of Neil Young’s seasick salute to the demise of the sixties, in all its glory/glorious failings.

On The Beach would be released to an apprehensive and critical audience, led by a Rolling Stone headshake that labelled the record ‘one of the most despairing albums of the decade.’ Thirty years later its demented deterioration of sound would come to define Young’s knife-edged spirit in the face of critical acclaim, spurring over 5000 fans to sign an online petition in 2000 calling for the release of the album on CD. In 2003, their prayers were answered…

Released before the demonic cackle of Tonight’s The Night, On The Beach was deemed a bleak follow up to the critically acclaimed smooth sounds of bestseller Harvest. In all respects, this was Neil Young’s statement of intent. An unforgiving one-fingered salute, brought to life by opening track ‘Walk On’: a vitriolic mix of world weary cynicism and focused drive that would spur Young to keep moving, whatever the cost. ‘I hear some people been talkin’ me down/Bring up my name/Pass it round’ he gnarls. ‘Walk on’ he concludes. It’s an anthem that still continues to define the lone wolf’s career…

On The Beach came to being at the Sunset Marquis Hotel, suffocating beneath Hollywood’s bleak underbelly at the close of 1973. Porn star Linda Lovelace was a regular visitor to Young’s congregated players, as were the Everly Brothers, who would often prop themselves up amidst a sprinkling of Playboy bunnies. As bassist Tim Drummond succinctly put it, the hell-raising sessions embodied ‘Hollywood Babylon at its fullest.’

In 1973 the sleazefest was fully in session, fuelled by a ‘honey slide’ homemade concoction of sautéed marijuana and honey labelled by Young’s own manager Elliot Roberts as, ‘much worse than heroin…within ten minutes you were catatonic.’

As guitarist Rusty Kershaw’s wife Julie cooked up the debilitating psychedelic goop, wolfed down by Young and co in-between regular trips to Dr. Feelgood for B12 “popcorn” shots, Neil Young turned his attentions to flesh-eating feelings of antagony and disintegration. No stone was left unturned: what with his marriage to actress Carrie Snodgress on the rocks, vampire sucking oil tacoons/Richard Nixon/CSNY weighing on his mind and baying critics on his back, the singer was hardly starved of inspiration.

The heavy guitar playing of The Band’s rhythm section (namely Rick Danko and Levon Helm) only added to the album’s sodden and weary disillusionment.

Defined by his own distinctive take on the blues: ‘Revolution Blues’, ‘Vampire Blues’ and ‘Ambulance Blues’ act as soulful psalms amidst the chaos.

Whereas ‘Vampire Blues’ launches a millionaire rock star’s attack on the blood sucking exploits of the oil industry (listen carefully and you may just hear the “chhh-chhh” of a capitalist credit card against Tim Drummond’s defiant beard), the concluding knell of closing ‘Ambulance Blues’, inspired by Bert Jansch’s ‘Needle Of Death’, addresses fractioned feelings of antagonism towards critics, Richard Nixon, and even fellow collaborators CSNY (lamenting lyric ‘you’re all just pissing in the wind’ is a direct quote from manager Elliot Roberts regarding the inactivity of the quartet.)

Crucially, ‘Revolution Blues’, inspired by Charles Manson who Young met in his Topanga Canyon days, best sums up the record’s juxtaposition of fiction and reality, as musician-and-ringmaster Rusty Kershaw bewitched the track’s recording, instigating chemically in-balanced anarchy during recording, (Kershaw bizarrely claimed to be possessed by animal spirits and slithered like a snake on the floor, even managing to spook chief hell raiser David Crosby and Graham Nash who contributed on tracks ‘On The Beach’ and said ‘Revolution Blues’.)

The circus-act wasn’t lost on Neil Young, who adopts a demented Manson persona during the song as he manically rants the couplet ‘I hear that Laurel Canyon is full of famous stars/But I hate them worse than lepers and I’ll kill them in their cars.’

As the sessions became increasingly frenetic, the shambolic goings-on proved too far-out for engineer Al Schmidt who walked out on the session before its completion, amidst exasperated exclaims of “what the fuck is goin’ on?”

Good question: what the fuck was going on? Simple: Neil Young was making his escape. The iconic album cover speaks the only truth you ever need know: trailer trash patio furniture is strewn under the grey breezy sky as a 1959 cadillac fender rises out of the sandy rubble. The day’s paper is discarded on the anaemic sand, reading ‘SENATOR BUCKLEY CALLS FOR NIXON TO RESIGN’. Someway in the not-too-distant horizon, a windswept Neil Young stands with his back against the world, staring out to sea in a yellow and white polyester suit. Subversive when you bear in mind the album’s defining mantra: ‘The world is turnin’/I hope it don’t turn away.’ With that, Young’s pre-emptive strike against the world is complete…Half a heartbeat before the world dares contemplate turning its back away from him…

The documents released to The Associated Press show the expanse of agents’ investigation into the film: seizing copies of the movie, having negatives analyzed in labs and interviewing everyone from actors and producers to messengers who delivered reels to theaters.

Dotično, ostvarenje, snimljeno 1972. godine s budžetom od 25.000 dolara je postalo jedan od najvećih kulturnih fenomena svog doba, s obzirom da je predstavljao prvi javno distribuirani film pornografske tematike, zahvaljujući kome je pornografija na mala vrata postala dio popularne kulture u SAD, a kasnije i u ostatku svijeta. Taj događaj, koji mnogi smatraju velikim trijumfom seksualne revolucije i simbolom epohalnih kulturnih promjena započetih burnih 1960-ih, po svemu sudeći je prilično išao na živce konzervativnom establishmentu oličenom u tadašnjem predsjedniku Nixonu, ali i FBI-ju.

Associated Press tako navodi da se dosije o filmu sastoji od 4800 gusto kucanih stranica, a još oko 1000 stranica je pod oznakom tajnosti. Iz onoga što je dostupno se može zaključiti kako je istraga bila nevjerojatno temeljita, te je autor filma Gerard Damiano bio ispitivan, te se čak razmišljalo o tome da mu se da status svjedoka-pokajnika. Među nedostupnim dokumentima je, pak, intervju s glumicom Lindom Lovelace.

Ono što cijeli slučaj čini još bizarnijim jest da je istragu između ostalih, detalnno nadgledao i pomoćnik direktora Mark W. Felt. Gotovo tri desetljeća kasnije je isti taj Felt razotkriven kao ključni doušnik vašingtonskih novinara Boba Woodwarda i Carla Bernsteina – dvojca čiji su zapisi razotkrili aferu Watergate i doveli do ostavke predsjednika Nixona 1974. godine. Bernstein i Woodward su, nastojeći zaštiti Feltov identitet, svog doušnika opisali kao “Duboko grlo” i pod tim je imenom ostao poznat desetljećima. Ironijom sudbine, kada su manje-više svi akteri drame oko “Dubokog grla” (Felt, Damiano, Lovelace) mrtvi, otkrilo se kako Felta s “Dubokim grlom” povezuje ipak nešto više oko zločeste mašte vašingtonskih novinara.

When Land of Punt saw the headline, “FBI files show wide `Deep Throat’ investigation” we immediately had an image of the headline writer’s wide grin over getting the word “wide” pass her editor.

Then we thought this headline must be in reference to W. Mark Felt, the Watergate informant who used the alias “Deep Throat” when briefing Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein.

The movie Deep Throat was released in 1972.

Imagine our surprise when we learned that the FBI was actually investigating the movie Deep Throat.

According to recently released documents, the FBI investigated the 1972 pornographic film, Deep Throat, in an effort to stop the spread of this type of licentious entertainment. The investigation was the government’s last desperate attempt to stem the tide of America’s rapidly dismissive attitudes.

We have the folks at the Associated Press to thank for pouring over the thousands of pages complied by the FBI. AP gained access to the material via the Freedom of Information Act.

The files the AP uncovered revealed that the FBI seized copies of the movie, had negatives analyzed in labs, wrote play-by-play accounts of the movie’s plot, and interviewed everyone from actors and producers to messengers who delivered reels to theaters. Agents were working around the clock from Detroit to Honolulu.

Deep Throat was directed Gerard Damiano. According to FBI reports he cooperated with the investigation and the Feds even discussed granting him immunity. Immunity from what no one knows.

LOP found it humorous that even though legend says the Mafia funded this movie, and the Mafia has been involved with pornography for years, the newly released FBI documents didn’t once mention the Mafia.

As you might expect, the reams and reams of information about the movie made their way around the FBI, up and down the totem pole. We’re sure some were even taken home for further review.

The movie Deep Throat, directed by Gerard Damiano and starring Linda Lovelace, was a huge success and widely popular when it was released. Some even view the movie as a revolutionary. It still is the one porno title everyone knows— well that and Buttman Does Europe 7.

Linda Boreman, a.k.a. Linda Lovelace, later dennounced her pornography career and claimed her sadistic first husband forced her into the buisness.

Land of Punt did some research as well and found this transcript of meeting between a Special Agent in charge of investing the movie Deep Throat and his five man task force:

Special Agent: Men, America is facing a new threat to its way of life. It’s an immoral and decrepit movie called Deep Throat. This type of depravity must be destroyed.

Special Agent: Who is willing to investigation this pornographic menace to its fullest?

All the agents cheer.

Special Agent: Good. It’s nice to see everyone is up for this assignment. Now, does anyone have any ideas about how best to investigate this Deep throat?
Agent #1: I could go to the movie, sir—as many times as you’d like me too.
Special Agent: Good idea. Get to know that movie like the back of your hand.
Agent #2: I could interrogate the movie’s star, Linda Lovelace.
Special Agent: Very good agent. I’m also impressed that you knew her name without a briefing. Way to stay on top of things.
Agent #3: Maybe instead of interrogating Ms. Lovelace we should do some undercover work. I could show up at her house delivering a pizza. I hear people like her really open up to delivery men.
Special Agent: Excellent.
Agent #4: Sir, sometimes movies have different endings depending on where they are shown. I could travel across the country and view the movie in different cities?
Special Agent: I like it, but that sounds grueling. It would be a long hard task. Are you up to the challenge?
Agent #4: Anything for my country, sir.
Agent #5: How about I examine each individual frame of the movie carefully and slowly. Maybe I’ll even blow up some of the more subversive frames for further examination.

Special Agent: Sounds time consuming, agent.

MIAMI – Newly released FBI files show agents across the country and at the highest level of the agency investigated “Deep Throat” – the 1972 porn movie, not the shadowy Watergate figure – in a vain attempt to roll back what became a cultural shift toward more permissive entertainment.

The documents released to The Associated Press show the expanse of agents’ investigation into the film: seizing copies of the movie, having negatives analyzed in labs and interviewing everyone from actors and producers to messengers who delivered reels to theaters.

All of it in a failed attempt to stop the spread of a movie that some saw as the victory of a cultural and sexual revolution and others saw as simply decadent.

“Today we can’t imagine authorities at any level of government – local, state or federal – being involved in obscenity prosecutions of this kind,” said Mark Weiner, a constitutional law professor and legal historian at Rutgers-Newark School of Law. “The story of ‘Deep Throat’ is the story of the last gasp of the forces lined up against the cultural and sexual revolution and it is the advent of the entry of pornography into the mainstream.”

The papers are among 498 pages from the FBI file on Gerard Damiano, who directed the movie and died in October. Released this month following a Freedom of Information Act request by the AP, they are just a glimpse into Damiano’s roughly 4,800-page file. More than 1,000 additional pages were withheld under FOIA exemptions and because they duplicated other material; the balance of the file has not yet been reviewed and released.

Many parts of the released files are whited out and the FBI’s ultimate targets are unclear, but the seriousness with which the agency treated the investigation is unquestionable.

Authorities have long said the movie was made with mafia money – and the FBI has linked the mob with porn over the years – but the file includes no mention of mob links.

The file includes memos between the FBI’s top men – L. Patrick Gray, William Ruckelshaus and Clarence Kelley, successive heads of the agency after J. Edgar Hoover – and field offices so widespread, it seemed nearly all of the country’s biggest cities were involved.

While much of the probe centered in New York, where many involved in the film lived, and Miami, where it was largely shot, agents from Honolulu to Detroit were involved.

On various entries in the file, a checklist of top FBI brass appears in the top right corner, with initials next to some names. One of those listed is W. Mark Felt, the FBI second-in-command whose “Deep Throat” alias as a Watergate informant came from the movie’s title. However, none of the markings indicate he read any of the materials on the movie whose name became synonymous with his role in bringing down Richard Nixon’s presidency.

Felt got the double-entendre nickname because he leaked crucial information about Nixon administration corruption on “deep background” to Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward. His identity remained a secret until 2005. He died in December.

Aside from investigative records tracking subpoenas, interviews, screenings and shipments of the film, the Damiano file includes various FBI agents’ play-by-play accounts of the movie’s plot, and the specific role of Damiano in the agency’s investigation.

The FBI notes Damiano had been “somewhat cooperative,” On Aug. 7, 1973, an assistant U.S. attorney general writes to Kelley, saying Damiano is being considered for immunity. The memo doesn’t specify the crime, though mentioned throughout the file is the charge of interstate transportation of obscene material.

Among the areas of the case file whited out is an interview with the star of the film, who at the time went by the name Linda Lovelace.

“Deep Throat” achieved fame unlike any pornographic film in history and become the most widely known adult film to reach a general audience. It was hugely profitable – made for about $25,000 and amassing hundreds of millions in receipts – and became a cultural buzzword.

Officials at every level of government tried to stop screenings and obscenity trials continued for years. But in the end, experts say, it represents the end of an era in which the government sought to stop the changing cultural tides.

Eugene Volokh, a law professor at UCLA, said the oddity of the scope of the investigation into “Deep Throat” is a reflection of very different times.

“Certainly today, with our broadly socially less restrictive attitude to most pornography and to sex more broadly it may seem odd that the government was spending so much effort on something like this,” he said. “But attitudes back then were much different.”

I was thinking back to when I was a teenager or younger and what I ‘d get up to. I remember reading a rather old Linda Lovelace book and finding it very exciting. I proceeded to try a number of things that she and the other women got up to. I used a hairdryer on my pussy as some woman did in the book. Hammondorgel und Schlagzeug in perfekter Pornoharmonie – eigentlich fehlt nur noch die Blockflöte. Der „Soundtrack“ – wenn man ihn denn so nennen darf – ist immer wieder von lustigen Filmzitaten unterbrochen („Don’t worry honey, everybody gets a little piece of this action“). Als Zugabe gibt es einen Reprint des Filmposters sowie einen tollen Klappentext inklusive Filmfotos von Linda Lovelace beim Deep Throating. Toll! Aber am tollsten sind die Gitarren- und Hammondsoli. Dann dieser Chorgesang und die grottig-pornomäßige Produktion, die heute jeder Hobbymusiker besser hinbekommen kann, wenn er denn will. Wer auf Musik steht sollte mal reinhören, wer einen guten Soundtrack hören will, sollte zu Deep Throat 2 greifen (Songtext: „Every morning she makes you hard with just one smile“). Und nächste Woche gibt’s wieder was Besonderes… mit etwas Glück sogar was richtig Seltenes…

I’m going to deviate a bit from the vintage Hollywood theme of the blog to pay homage to two ladies that are stars of “The Other Hollywood”.  Linda Lovelace and Marilyn Chambers are the reigning queens of the Golden Age of porn films and this day in history marks two anniversaries.  The recently, departed Marilyn Chambers, star of the Mitchell Brothers’ Behind the Green Door was born on this date in 1952.  Deep Throat star Linda Lovelace, sadly, was in a fatal car crash on this day in 2002.  While these lovely ladies of lurid cinema are no longer with us, they leave a body of work that speaks for itself.  They helped make porn a mainstream indulgence for the masses and paved the way for todays stars like Jenna Jameson to earn success as well as credibility as a business woman who is her own brand and an advocate of sexual freedom.  Both ladies also shared a personal connection.  Aside from careers in porn, they, at different times, were married to Chuck Traynor, a man who made his livelihood in various areas of the porn industry.  He basically discovered Lovelace and, after divorcing her, went on to marry Chambers and revive her porn career in the 1980s.

Whether you like porn or not, you cannot deny it’s impact on our culture and Lovelace and Chambers are, no doubt, a part of that.  R.I.P.

1926 – Charlotte Rae, the loveable original housekeeper from Diff’rent Strokes (you know the show that produced the most notorious child stars, Dana Plato, Todd Bridges and Gary Coleman) and house mother Edna Garrett on The Facts of Life (the show that brought us a girl named Tootie).

1928 – Aaron Spelling – television produced extraordinaire.  This is the man that brought The Mod Squad, Charlie’s Angels, Dynasty and Beverly Hills, 90210 into our lives and I thank God every day for his genius.  His first wife was Carolyn Jones, Morticia Addams from The Addams Family.

1935 – Glenn Campbell – The Rhinestone Cowboy and Wichita Lineman all in one.  He started out as a musician with the Beach Boys who filled in for Brian Wilson when he was not up for touring and enjoyed his own successful singing career along with a bit of acting.  He also was one half of a torrid couple with the country songbird Tanya Tucker.  Their exploits fueled tabloid stories throughout the late 70s.

1937 – Jack Nicholson – He is the only actor to have earned 3 Academy Awards.  I considered him one of the greatest in all the history of cinema.  He actually has one thing in common with crooner Bobby Darin.  Each grew up believing that their grandmothers were their mothers while they thought their actual mothers were their sisters.  It’s a crazy mixed up situation that was born out of the unforgiving society of the 1930s and it’s bias against unwed pregnant women. 

1950 – Peter Frampton –He Came Alive on this date.  He enjoyed enormous success with his life rock album in 1976 but fell from grace along with the Bee Gees and Disco in the cinematic disaster Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

1952 – Marilyn Chambers – Adult film actress.  Star of Behind the Green Door and Ivory Snow model. See below.

Porn star/actress Marilyn Chambers is dead at 56. She was found April 12 in her Southern California home by her 17-year-old daughter, McKenna Marie Taylor.  Chambers is also survived by her brother, Bill Briggs, and her sister, Jann Smith.   

But, sadly, news of her death barely made a blip on the Las Vegas virtually anything goes  entertainment news radar. 

Las Vegas Backstage Access waited and waited for something to appear, then decided an article was in order on the verge of her birthday.  After all, she is credited for bringing pornographic films into the mainstream and, in so doing, substantially added to Las Vegas’ colorful and alluring mystique. 

Born Marilyn Ann Briggs on April 22, 1952 in Providence, Rhode Island, Chambers was an attractive, effervescent young woman who had begun her career as a mainstream model and actress, finding fame as the smiling blonde cuddling a laughing, nappy-clad baby on Ivory Snow ads, a popular brand of detergent. When she then appeared in an adult film featuring hard-core inter-racial sex, Procter & Gamble, whose products were claimed to be “100% pure,” quickly pulled the boxes from the shelves. 

Though the manufacturer quickly replaced her,  it was later discovered that she also had a small role in the 1970 Barbara Streisand film “The Owl and the Pussycat.” 

Chambers traded her wholesome image as an all-American pin-up girl for notoriety as a porn star, credited with bringing hard-core adult films into the mainstream consciousness when she starred in the explicit very low-budget 1972 movie “Behind the Green Door.” 

Chambers was the first crossover adult movie star. 

Chambers, also known as Marilyn Ann Taylor, and then-husband/manager Chuck Traynor were fairly high-profile Las Vegas residents during the 1980s, when they co-owned a local gun and survival store, The Survival Store, backing operating partner Bob Irwin in the gun store and shooting range at Interstate 15 and Spring Mountain Road in Las Vegas. 

It was Chambers that popularized the “machine gun and bikini” image used to promote the store – a similar ploy used even today by gun stores around the country – for several years before she separated from Traynor, who was controversial for his earlier marriage to porn star Linda Lovelace (Linda Susan Boreman) and her allegations of abuse. 

Chambers and fellow actresses Linda Lovelace and Georgina Spelvin skyrocketed to fame and stardom at this time when both American social mores and the quality of hard-core sex films were changing. 

For the first time, films like “Behind the Green Door” and “Deep Throat” (also released in 1972 and starring Lovelace) had decent acting and legitimate, albeit fairly thin plots. As the audiences for them grew to include couples, they also began to take on higher production values and to be seen in places other than sleazy theaters. 

She followed the “Green Door” film with other hard-core films “Resurrection of Eve,” in 1973 and “Inside Marilyn Chambers” in 1975. Then she announced in 1976 that she was giving up adult films to pursue other interests. She starred in the 1977 horror movie “Rabid” and to put together a song-and-dance show that played Las Vegas and elsewhere.  After this, the rest of her career she spent shuffling between sex and horror flicks. 

In October 1974, Chambers performed in the dinner-theater comedy “Mind With the Dirty Man” at Las Vegas’ Union Plaza (in reference to the Union Pacific railroad station that originally stood at the site now known as the Plaza Hotel and Casino).  It was at this period she was attempting to spin her notoriety into non-porn endeavors, with plaza owners including the likes of prominent Las Vegas businessmen Sam Boyd, Howard Cannon and Jackie Gaughan.  She returned to the Plaza stage in early 1978 for “Last of the Red Hot Lovers.” 

But by 1979, Chambers was back acting in sex films and onstage for a short-lived engagement in the one-woman show “Sex Surrogate” at the Jolly Trolley casino in Las Vegas. The show drew the quick ire of Las Vegas officials because full nudity is banned in casinos with unrestricted gaming. 

In 1981, Chambers became a fulltime Clark County Nevada resident and known well-known enough that a routine summons for jury duty caused a courthouse stir and generated newspaper coverage. She was dismissed after explaining to the judge, “I’m an entertainer and I have to be in Cleveland Wednesday for an engagement.” 

Chambers, married and divorced three times, remained in Las Vegas through the 1980s after her separation from Traynor, who died in 2002. She also dated Bobby D’Apice, who later made headlines as the Crazy Horse Too shift manager in Las Vegas that was sentenced to prison for breaking the neck of a customer. 

In an online chat with AdultDVDtalk.com in 2000, Chambers attempted to explain what caused her to take such a radically different career path after “The Owl and the Pussycat” and her modeling work. 

“Back then in my naive brain I was thinking that something like ‘Behind the Green Door’ had never been done before and the way our sexual revolution was traveling I really thought it was going to be a stepping stone which would further my acting career,” she said. 

She learned afterward, she said, that wasn’t the case. “There will always be a stigma on people who do adult films,” she said. “It’s unfortunate that that’s the way society has made it.” 

She returned to adult films in 1980 in “Insatiable” and through the rest of her career went back and forth between explicit movies and R-rated ones. Hirsch noted that one of the most striking things about Chambers’ career was its longevity in a business where stars quickly fade. She still has a photo gallery on the Web site Adult Video News and the Internet Movie Database credits her as recently completing a film called, “Porndogs: The Adventures of Sadie” with Ron Jeremy. 

Although Chambers was quick to point out in 2000 that she had done more R-rated films that X-rated ones, she made no apologies for the latter:  ”I have to say that the adult films have been a total pleasure,” she said. “They were like getting paid to live out my greatest fantasies. The rest of the stuff … sometimes got to be a real grind.” 

Marilyn Chambers was ranked by Playboy magazine as one of the top 100 sex stars of the 20th century and was named among the top 10 adult film stars of all time. 

Her Southern California death currently remains under investigation.
