Listening to- Memento Mori: Flyleaf’s new album. Good, though I still like their first album b

Listening to- Memento Mori: Flyleaf’s new album. Good, though I still like their first album better. More emotion in it [the first].

So after a month or so dinking around in Welcome Areas- as stated in my past post, I’ve decided to create my list of observations. not to be taken personally, seriously or official. Welcome Areas, such as Ahern, Korea, Hanja, Waterhead, etc- are Rezz areas for newbies, and gathering areas for those who have nothing better to do, aka, me lately. Also the home for many of Second Life’s griefers and trolls. This can be the laughable level of “haha noob”, to taking it too far and getting personal with said person. Example, last week, I was in Korea while this woman played rap music over her mic. Being the somewhat-bitterbitch, rap-disliking person I am, emoted ”shoots self.” The woman then went on to a rant on how no one would come to my Second Life funeral, and nobody liked me. This was a 5-ish minute rant, one-sided. Apparently she’s really attached to her rap music. Now I was split, somewhat hurt because I have always remained fairly nice to people in Second Life despite perhaps over-opinionated or witty remarks; so this “burn” came as a shock to me, the first time someone had gone out of their way to try to hurt me, well, they succeeded a little. The other half of me was cracking up- wait, people hold Second Life funerals?! Why have I never been to one?! Easily shaking it off within the next hour, I actually paid attention to what people say to each other in Welcome Areas. Some of the people, or “av’s” (as they can easily hide behind a pixel and say whatever they want) are hilarious. Their comments are personal, but just witty or informal enough to get a laugh out of me. But there is a strict crossing line when your real life is mentioned, and you are not inviting them into that part of your life. Now, if you go around blabbing about your life, what and who you are, that’s your fault- that’s giving ammo to the anonymous. But I have seen people get single-handedly harassed when they didn’t deserve it at all, and it makes me feel indifferent. I’m not going to lie and say I’m all cupcakes and sunshine, I enjoy drama- and that’s usually why I go to Welcome Areas. It’s like Second Life’s bad sitcom. You DONT want to watch or listen, but you CANT look away. Either way, when you snap out of your virtual world, you realize these are people, saying these things to people they don’t know, and usually have never met. That’s the reality of it. However you take this, I know I will still visit these areas from time to time, the same reason you might. Better than a sex sim. Anyways, here you are- the top 5 things you might want to think about (written with humor, nothing more) before bravely stepping into the battle ground of some of the lowest.

1. Dont speak unless spoken too
Apparently, Lindens gave avatars free speech. In contrast, griefers and trolls took it away by telling people to “stfu” when they give their opinion on a said subject.

2. Keep an anchor on/Make yourself phantom
Keep WILL bump, push, thrust, whatever. One time I was thrusted across the sim. Funny, though annoying.

3. Only get on voice if you know you have a good mic.
This includes if you are foreign.

4. Dont private IM people you havent talked to
The IM, timestamp included, will be copied and pasted into group/main chat, where others can ridicule you untill they get bored. If they find it lame enough, they will read it out loud on voice. Shamefully, I have done this.

5. Dont expect to get the spotlight, unless you are an OG.
The only people I have heard on voice that I can understand are in empty sims, or have “earned other griefers respect”; otherwise, others will rudely talk over you. Amazingly enough, most Europeans actually have tact and take turns.

In closing- I am still at a newfound love/hate relationship with Welcome Areas. Some, I believe were losers all their lives and finally got some sort of popularity via the interwebs, and maintain that status with cruel remarks. Others are kind, helpful, creative, friendly, sexy-voiced, etc. I now expect if this is ever read by one of my unfavorable’s, I will be griefed. SLife goes on.

XOXO

Linking things or people together is actually things you can do in Second Life (and probably other virtual worlds, or games on the internet).

When I think of linking things in Second Life I think of many things. You can link Prims together. Torley Linden is showing how to do it

here

But then I also think of Google mashup, or as in Second Life where people are connected, or linked together.

I know a priest Pellegrina, she is a priest in real life, and a really sweet person. She has a church on her SIM called Denmark, where you can get married. I think she actually in the beginning also had other ceremonies. Perhaps she will do something for christmas? The SIM is described more thoroughly here.

Pellegrina also has this sign in front of her church:

Pellegrinas sign infront of her church

You can see more L words here

You can visit her SIM with a click here if you already have an account, otherwise it is free, and you can get one here.

Hello Second Life! Sorry I have been lacking in my blog posts, but I am alive! Just havent been updating as much…been more active on Plurk and Flickr than on here due to having barely anything if anything at all to write about or review. I’m still DJing, rarely roleplaying anymore- but have taken an interest in the grief-world of Welcome Area’s. Unlike most sims in SL, they are more actual chat-like, rather than focusing on RPG, fashion, etc. It’s nice, when you are lonely or bored. Though a good percentage of the people are middle-aged, alcoholic, and yell things on mic that we could care less about. However, this doesnt mean it isnt entertaining. I have also talked with/met some interesting individuals there- whom names are to remain unsaid. A few with rough background, a few with rich background, a few from the USA, a few from Europe. Then your occasional foreigner nobody can understand. Overall, if you want a random handful of unique people, I suggest visiting a Welcome Area (search Ahern, Hanja, Korea, etc.). Though you are warned, some of them take pleasure in picking apart other people lives- whether it’s SL or RL. Why? Some say they’re immature, bored, insecure, whatever. I just think that if you can’t take the heat, get out of one of Second Life’s most controversial region.

I’ll post a regular update soon, assuming I dont get distracted with other things again.

There’s a funny little shop in Linden called Yugo Stores, branded with the Coke sign you expect to find in a berg village. Here you can find the smallest possible packets of sugar, puncture repair kits, bulked packed blue and white mugs for funerals and yellow kettles that you can plant bergrosies in.

It is not a beautiful building, and the people that walk in and out do not have sunglasses perched on their heads. Here, you can buy a loose xxx mint or creme soda in a bottle (not the organic kind). They also sell small packets of koeksoda which I still think is the best name for a chemical that eradicates cystitis.

Recently a large red white and blue auction sign was erected over the shop. Oh my god, it’s going to become a franchised restaurant. This is wrong, being opposite the best biltong in town, according to some or other neighbourhood survey. I am surprised Biltong Man has not dropped dead yet he is so biltongly large as he strides behind the counter of cholesterol encrusted salamis and forces handfuls of tastes on anyone gazing up at his signed collection of rugby team photos. He is next to a pawn shop, a hardware shop and a shop that sells large floral dresses. I can imagine him in one.
Anyway, Mr Yugo – I don’t know his name but he has a large hairy mole on the left side of his jaw that wobbles when he speaks – told me a few months ago he was doing blerry everything to keep the business in the family after the Recent Sad Death. Details of which I don’t know. Jasmine always insists I speak Afrikaans to him for some reason while I’m buying her a R20 plastic toy that costs R120 in Cresta.

There is also a block of flats cobbled on to the building. I looked at one once. Vast. Parque floors peeling up like lichen. Why didn’t I take it? Too big I thought at the time.

Well, I’m pleased to say the auction sign is down, and Mr Mole is happily still offering rainbows of lighters as he hopes that he will be there for at least the next 10 years.

Mommie bragging here, but come on, isn’t she just the cutest?! I kiss those sweet cheeks every chance I get and I fear the day when those kisses won’t be well received.

Here is a picture I took of Linden and I playing at the park behind the Highlands Ranch library yesterday afternoon. She was much more concerned with walking around and exploring, rather than playing on the playground. I really think her favorite part was climbing up on a park bench and telling me all about it – my baby loves to talk!

She also loves to sleep. This weekend she went to bed at 7 p.m. on Saturday and woak up at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, and then napped from 1:15-4:20 p.m. on Sunday afternoon! Oh my goodness…I haven’t slept in that late in a very, very long time. I think someone must be growing! I just have a feeling that we were super lucky with Linden in the sleep department and I would be fooling myself to think that any future child (yes, we are beginning to admit that we might consider having more than 1!) might also start sleeping 12 hours a night at 3 weeks old Either that, or I am a nazi schedule mom – I’m going with that it was a combo of luck and nazi. I am just thankful for awesome sleep before more teeth to come in (I think we only have a couple of baby teeth left to have a complete set!) and LP wakes up in the middle of the night crying and holding her mouth in pain.

So today I am thankful for the healthy, funny, joyful and sweet little girl that God has given to our family.

Giving tips either in cash or goods has been a trend in the world of business and Second Life is not

Giving tips either in cash or goods has been a trend in the world of business and Second Life is not an exception to it. Tipping is an expression of acknowledgment for a job well done. It is thought to be reasonable for owners of publicly accessible sims and clubs to ask the users for voluntary donations and tips that is used to defray some or all of the cost of running the business.

The most notable areas of monetary exchange in SL are heavy transactions in ‘virtual estate’, virtual sex industry and music performances. Ever since the inception of SL, its economic effects have been controversial. It has been a constant dilemma of how to view the in-world money transactions. Should the virtual money be taxable or not? Governments, economists and ordinary players all have mulled over this matter.

Some argue that as long as virtual activity stays within the virtual economy, it shouldn’t be taxable. However, the linden dollars have now been spilled in the real life (Reference 1, Reference 2) and money can be freely exchanged between real life and Second Life. With this development, there is the looming possibility of money laundering by unscrupulous people including funding of terrorist groups.

In fact, the Swedish Taxation Agency Skatterverket has seemingly declared that any virtual transaction of money in the game is taxable. The US Internal Revenue Services (IRS) has also been keeping a close eye on the Linden dollars to enforce taxation. Skatterverket wants to tax in-world transactions and expects the users to send invoices for any transaction. But this approach may not be reasonable since one of the basic premise of SL game is the anonymity of the users. The users don’t know who they’re interacting with.

Arguably, in SL, the largest transactions of money are through tipping in numerous virtual sex businesses and music clubs. SL residents are particularly drawn to the music clubs to experience a social interaction while DJs or live performers playing their favorite music. Tipping the DJs, live performers and the hosting clubs and sims is an accepted practice that in some cases is essential for keeping these clubs viable. These seemingly innocuous gestures of donation and receipt of Linden dollars may have deeper economic repercussions.

Recently, a new trend has been noticed in SL. Tip a little too much and someone from the Linden clan will chase you, audit you, and make sure that you are not evading taxes or laundering money for a drug cartel. This brings us to the question whether large amounts of money can be laundered in Second Life? It seems that using multiple alt accounts and bots, it may be possible to launder petty cash of a few hundred dollars without being tracked by the authorities (Reference 3). But laundering any larger amount of money will be almost impossible without raising a red flag in Linden Lab’s exchange department. A bitterly true account of Linden economy is presented at Reference 4.

Coming back to the taxation of the tips and donations, in real life, the IRS calculates an average percentage based on actual credit card tips the server or restaurant earns and applies that number to cash transactions. Can this model be adapted to SL? Theoretically, it is possible to track these donations that are channeled through the tip-jars.

The omnipresent tip-jar at the public sims and clubs can be quite a complex device. The tip-jar is not just a receptacle of the tips and donations dropped in it. These tip-jars come in a variety of fancy shape, sizes and decorations including the personalized ones with the pictures and themes. The facade of these tip-jars may hold a complex calculator that faithfully apportions the obtained tips into the accounts of the hierarchical management system. A number of these tip-jars have been designed by astute builders who have put innovative scripts that distribute the tip to the performer, establishment and the sim owner. Sophisticated tip-jars may subtly create competition among donors and recipients alike. For example, a tip-jar may display the biggest donor at a venue making other generous donors to up that amount. A tip-jar may also display the most tipped employee at a location to generate ‘healthy competition’ which invariably may help the owner of the establishment. In addition, these tip-jars can hold or relay the entire transaction of the event or the day to a web-based server or to your email account for record-keeping.

In any case, it is not clear why suddenly Linden Lab has been tracking people for their monetary transactions in SL. There are several theories about Linden Lab’s apparently whimsical actions of suspending SL residents from the game. I have attempted to contact the Managing Director of Marketing (Linden Lab) through email, but Linden Lab server has refused to receive my email. Until we hear from them, it remains an unsolved mystery!

This past weekend TCU faced one of their toughest opponents this season, Utah and our family was, of course, glued to the TV wearing our purple…. and jealous of our friends and family back in Ft. Worth who got to go to the game

And we weren’t the only ones wearing purple – so was our food. We bought purple potatoes at Whole Foods and made homemade purple french fries to go with our grilled buffalo chicken sandwiches for game time. Delicious!

I’ll admit it. I would never, in a month of Sundays, put Sadie on my daughter’s birth c

I’ll admit it. I would never, in a month of Sundays, put Sadie on my daughter’s birth certificate. It would be Sarah, thanks very much, just in case she grows up to run for office or take up brain surgery or otherwise wants to sound like a mature, serious adult.

I’m not necessarily in the majority. And I’m not necessarily right, either. Plenty of women named Julie and Jodie have turned out just fine. And plenty of Sarah/Sadies are irritated at having to constantly explain that yes, Sadie is a nickname for Sarah.

So for your consideration, I’ve pulled together a list of ends-in-ie-names just might stand on their own.

I’m excluding choices like Katie and Maggie - names easily connected to formal versions, as well as feminizations like Billie and Charlie. And if it more commonly ends in -y, you won’t find it here – so no Mollie, Lillie or Lucie.

That still leaves bunches of names:

Arlie – Arline started out as a well-born child kidnapped by gypsies in a nineteenth century opera, but today she’s the outdated Arlene. Arlie might be a short form, or she may related to a surname. Either way, she sounds fresher than the -een ending original.

Birdie – Lady Bird was worn in the White House. Actress Busy Phillips bestowed this avian appellation on her daughter. While there are more subtle ways to evoke the finely feathered, Birdie isn’t quite unthinkable.

Bonnie – Worn by the ill-fated daughter of Rhett and Scarlett in Gone With the Wind – who was actually named Eugenie Victoria. She means pretty – and she is just that.

Callie – If Kelly and Kaylee are independent given names for girls, why not Callie? She’s also a possible nickname for classics like Caroline and Charlotte, as well as the less-expected Calla, Calista or Calliope.

Dessie – In Ireland, Dessie is a nickname for Desmond – and thus, exclusively masculine. In the US, it sounds more like a riff on Bessie.

Dulcie – She’s sweet – literally, from the Latin dulcis. Longer form Dulcinea conjures up the Judybats, Toad the Wet Sprocket and Don Quixote – though the literary Dulcinea was actually named Aldonza.

Erie – Eir was a Norse goddess; Éire, a Celtic one – she lent her name to Ireland. Eiry is a Welsh girl’s name – related names abound, all meaning snow. Erie may be linked to any or none of the above, and could rhyme with fairy, or have a totally other pronunciation.

Hattie – You might put Harriet or Henrietta on the birth certificate, but millinery references aside, Hattie has some style.

Hettie – Another possibility for Henrietta, as well as Hester or Hestia.

Lettie – Formal name options include the salad-esque Lettice, or the lacy Letitia. If Victorian valentine isn’t your style, Lettie might appeal.

Lindie – Lucky Lindy was aviator Charles Lindbergh’s nickname. The Lindy Hop was a swing-era dance craze named in his honor. Linda is a Baby Boomer – as are elaborations like Melinda and Belinda. But today, Lindie might work as a nickname for hippie chic tree name Linden – or on her own.

Lottie – Charlotte is in the US Top 100 and rising, but it seems as very few Charlottes are answering to this nickname – so far.

Maisie – Like Maggie, she could be a diminutive form of Margaret, via the Scottish Mairead. But if Daisy stands on her own, maybe Maisie does, too.

Millie – Mildred might be too dowdy to ever make a comeback, but Millie is Thoroughly Modern. She’s also a spunky nickname for the super-sweet Millicent.

Minnie – Yes, there’s the mouse. But there’s also the actress – who was actually born Amelia Fiona Driver.

Tillie – Matilda is ever so fashion forward. Short form Tilda brings to mind the actress. Then there’s Tillie – perhaps a bit too cute, but possibly wearable on her own.

Trudie – It’s hard to imagine naming a daughter Gertrude. But Trudie seems like a logical sister for Sadie – spunky, retro and not too flimsy to stand on her own.

Zadie – If Sadie stands along, why not her zippy cousin? The z-to-s switch has worked out just fine for novelist Zadie Smith.

Zelie – There have definitely been women named Zelie, but her exact origins are unclear, though some link her to the French Zéline and she brings to mind the Yiddish Zelig.

I could go on – there’s Winnie and Elsie, Flossie and Roxie. But I’ll stop here and just ask: would you consider a short, ends-in-ie name for a daughter? And if so, would you put it on her birth certificate or opt for a more formal version?

This month has been so fun – every month is, and every month seems even better (and easier!) than the last.

Linden has added so many new words to her volcabulary, and teeth to her mouth, this month that it is hard for me to keep up!

Some of her favorite new words include:

Ball

Buh-Bye (she previously just said bye, and it is really bye-bye, but buh-bye is how it sounds!)

Ball

Uh-Oh (previously she would just say Oh!)

Blue

Star

Night-night

All done

More

Up

Grandpa (‘Pa)

Snow (more like ‘no)

Nose

Teeth

Ear

(will point to a picture of her self and say)… “Das’ Me!”

Nana (what she calls Ryan’s Mom)

Vroom-Vroom (the noise a car makes!)

Animal sounds and names for pig, cow, dog, cat

This month Linden has really enjoyed her nose…her little trick is to squeeze her nose and say “honk, honk,” and then she will generally lean over and do the same to you! She has also enjoyed hosting her own crib parties and would self entertain for hours if we let her stay there! The self-hosted crib parties seem to have curbed her desire to climb out of her crib, which she has already done 2-3 times. Oh my, I am not ready for that, and she is not ready for her big girl bed – she would never stay in it!

Right now she is working on her 2 top eye teeth and then 2 additional teeth on the bottom, next to her molars.

She will eat pretty much anything – especially if she can figure out how to eat it with her fork. She has successfully eaten toast and Triscuit crackers with her fork…she is yet to conquor Goldfish crackers with her fork, but I wouldn’t count her out yet.

Where did my little baby go?!

Another Tuesday night and another chance to watch the goings on at Holby City. After the drama of Ar

Another Tuesday night and another chance to watch the goings on at Holby City.

After the drama of Archie’s death and the suspension of Faye, Connie and Ric, it seems like the whole of the hospital needed Elliot’s skills. Now, whilst he may be an excellent surgeon and an adorable one at that, Elliot isn’t Superman and all the extra pressure proved just a bit too much for Mr Hope. Cue Penny to save the day.

For weeks now, Penny and Elliot have been getting closer and I have to say, I think the writers are on to something. The two of them bounce off each other well, have a heart-warming relationship that is part paternal/part mentor and it works. And let’s face it, with all of the hormones flying around Holby City Hospital, it’s good to see there is such a thing as a platonic relationship.

Elsewhere, the Faye/Linden/Joseph saga continued. A clearly distressed Linden was obviously wanted to be the one taking care of Faye, but was struggling with keeping his distance, following the whole “I kissed your bride on your wedding day” showdown with Joseph. Joseph meanwhile was wandering the corridors determined to get to the bottom of Faye’s treatment. He started by screaming at evil Lauren, who knows only too well that she was responsible for Archie’s death but is determined to blame Faye. Just when Joseph goes up in my estimations, he plummets back down and yet again he was like a school boy having a tantrum.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens between Faye and Linden when she returns. Somehow I don’t think we’ve seen the end of the will-they-won’t-they drama and I’m secretly hoping they will! Although judging by the preview of next week’s episode, it seems like Linden will have enough to keep him busy over the next couple of months.

Finally, two questions that are really bugging me:

1. Why has nobody mentioned Linden being Archie’s Godfather?
2. Holby’s F1s seem several years ahead of Casualty’s F2s. Why?
