In my quest to become a great artist I do a lot of sketching, I focus on doing lots of quickies with a great “look and feel” instead of obsessing on a single drawing for too long – here’s my latest Inspector Gadget, a free hand sketch that took about 10 minutes to complete!

Journey of a logo

Today’s post isn’t very grand, but I was going through my pictures and came across this old progress file. The drawing on the left was the initial sketch for my logo, featuring of course, Hanna, and my Martin A-style mandolin. I scanned the drawing and used it as a guide for the lineart for the final image, which I did in GIMP.

Otherwise, I have a big commission I am working on, and a new design partially sculpted. Things are on the way .

From Self Doubt to Xanadu

Almost every day, I doubt my abilities. I look at all the amazing artwork around and think to myself how mine pales in comparison. I think to myself that my style is immature and that nobody would ever part with their money to own a piece of my work (not that it’s about money)… I can tend to get very down on myself and wonder why I bother. At times I have to (metaphorically) slap myself across the face and give myself a little snap-out-of-it shake. It is then that I realise, I don’t create any of my artwork for anybody other than myself… Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate any compliments I get, but the reason I create anything at all, is because I need to, for me. The health of my mind and soul depends on it… and so, if I never make a cent creating my silly little pictures, deeply, I am satisfied because I get to do something I love for the pure joy and nothing else. My latest little doodle… Xanadu Zebra… I hope you enjoy them as much as I loved putting them together.

This is what came of my mucking about with copic markers yesterday. Hand drawn in ink and coloured in photoshop.

My favourite is the little owl with the sparklers, he looks as though he’s wiggin’ out, too cute.

Line art

Step two of my art process is finished! I’ve now gone over the original lines of the scanned image in my sketchbook with my editing program. This can be challenging because my hands aren’t very steady and I often get frusterated when the lines that I make do not go the direction I intended them to go. As you can see, I’ve done some tweaking with the picture. I’ve gone and cropped up the sides, mainly because I was having a difficult time with the legs. I’ve also re-posed the hands and fixed some details on the kimono and made a few tweaks to the hair.

At this point I begin to color the image. This is a rather tedious task and takes a long time to complete. I will post step 3 in my next post!

Sometimes I just realize I want to do something I was supposed to do for a long time but never get the motivation, and decide to do it against the odds anyway. In my current room there’s no chair or table, so when I decided to paint with my inks it had to be on the bed. But anyway I made it. Need a lot more practice but I realized that starting small is the way. I get bored drawing simple stuff and want to go for the more advanced things right away only to fail and scraping the idea of drawing for an other few months.
They are all made from photo references.
