Your magnificent Miss November 2001 was the lovely and talented and unremittently marvelous, in this shiksa’s opinion, Lindsey Vuolo. Ms Vuolo’s interview with Playboy touched on her recent trip to Israel, included a picture from her bat mitzvah, and set off a shitstorm of reactionary crossfire about pornography, sex, and religion in the conservative Jewish community, from which she valiantly refused to back down. Preach it, garrl!

Lindsey’s Italian father converted to Judaism to marry her Russian mother. “I traveled to Israel as part of an exchange program and it was an amazing trip,” she says. “Being in Jerusalem was so emotional for me — I broke down and cried.” (“Lindsey,” Playboy, November 2001)

Holy shit, if that did not apparently ruffle feathers for her to be naked emotionally as well as physically by describing what being Jewish meant to her in terms of her personal identity and emotions. (You can bare your breasts, and you can bare your bajango*, but you can’t bare those with your soul and be religious!)

*thank you, Tina Fey, for the term “bajango.” I’ll get to the Playboy interview where she first dropped that term for ladyparts another day.

What happened next was, this guy Rabbi Shmuley Boteach caught wind of her appearance –especially her emphasis on her religion and what it meant to her identity– and publicly took Lindsey to task for posing for Playboy (though he had himself appeared in the magazine promoting his book, Kosher Sex).

Feminists and porn-purveyors alike took Lindsey’s side, and soon everyone from rabbis to radical social theorists was weighing in with their opinions on faith and sex. These are two topics that everyone has touch them in some personal way, so I’m not surprised that people felt personally authorized to comment on the issue. I remember noting in college classes that the discussions during lecture in which everyone was the most engaged usually involved universal human issues like religion, sex, or love. Everyone experiences these things, so everyone has an opinion!

Taking advantage of the publicity which resulted from the itty-bitty-titty holy war, Boteach enticed her to come to a recorded and Extremely Accusatory “discussion” with him of the issue of pornography and Judaism vis-a-vis what the religion’s teachings were and how pornography impacts marriage, traditional ideals of femininity, and sexuality. She had the balls to show up, and not only that, defend herself. Reading the interview, I felt ashamed. I could have never made it through to the end the way she does. I’m easily humiliated by disapproving men. Not so Ms. Vuolo. She has an admirable self-awareness and a respectful but strong spine of steel. Check some of these excerpts, which I’ve thoughtfully and even thought-provokingly interwoven with the quotes from the “interview”:

Shmuley Boteach: So tell me what you think about the following ideas, okay? Number one: Pornography or Playboy ultimately, far from being sexy and titillating, is actually boring and monotonous because the moment you see someone’s body in its entirety, the first few minutes, sure, it’s very exciting but after that nothing is left to the imagination. It loses its erotic allure. I mean, all studies show that when women go to bed with guys too early, it almost always destroys the relationship because the thrill of the chase is gone, the mystery is gone. The human body requires mystique in order to retain its attractiveness. There also has to be the involvement of the mind in order for there to be fantasy, and nudity and sexual over-explicitness actually hinders fantasy.

For example, as a marriage counselor, I always say to wives, don’t ever walk around the bedroom naked unless it’s time for sex and he has to earn the right to see your body naked because–


Lindsey Vuolo: I disagree with that.


SB: You disagree with that?


LV: Yeah. Because you know, my husband–well, I don’t have a husband but if I had a husband, and we share everything together and I’m his, I’ll run around naked for him. That’s for him, I mean, then he doesn’t need to see anyone else naked.

SB: I wish what you were saying was true but according to the Hite report the fact that 75% of husbands are unfaithful and the fact that half of marriages end in divorce shows that unfortunately men need variety when they feel they get bored. Many men who cheat on their wives claim to love their wives. They do it only because they need something new. So clearly, it is very possible to get bored of your wife’s body, no matter how much she runs around for you.


LV: Well, I think for all time men will always look at women whether it’s their wives or someone else. And I don’t think that they get bored, you know, they look–


RS: No, no, we know they look at women’s bodies. The question is, will they look at the same woman’s body. You’re Miss November. They’re not going to make you Miss December under any circumstances. The reason is the guys have seen you and they’ve just seen you. They want someone new now. Doesn’t that alone prove to you that pornography gets boring?

Playboy has used you and you’ll never be a playmate again.


LV: I posed for this for me. So if I’m degrading anyone, I’m just degrading myself. What other women do–


SB: But the biggest sins in life are where we hurt ourselves even more than other people.


LV: But I don’t feel like I’m hurting myself.

Holy fuckballs, what a passel of ice-cold punches to the gut. If you have sex or display yourself as sexual, you have used up your ace in the hole, blown your wad of feminine mystique, as it were, and will forever forth be undervalued. Um … is this so? I don’t even know! I just want to go shower and cry! Bitch magazine, help a Catholic girl with deep-seated Daddy Issues out:

Unwilling to cow to the rabbi, (who, it should be noted, promoted his own book in Playboy) Lindsey stood her ground, explaining that she had done nothing wrong. According to Lindsey, Playboy doesn’t even count as pornography because to her the word conjures up images of “penetration, urination, and things like that.” (“My Meidel is a Centerfold,” Bitch Magazine, Deborah Kolben, May 2002.)

Okay, well, at least I know other women will give me a hug and a “it’s okay, honey,” whether or not we are any of us sure about anything after the tirade about how men will grow tired of us and we must not be naked in front of even our husbands.

So. Quick word about this shoot: okay, obviously I have a majah girl-brain-crush on Lindsey Vuolo, but, strictly from an unbiased perspective, from the artistic standpoint, I strongly believe that this photoshoot stands head and shoulders above most of the others from the 2000’s.

It has a clear unity of vision: the story is, this super-super-cute, vintage-lingerie-loving, wholesome, upbeat gal works at an old-fashioned pie-and-coffee kind of diner as a pastry chef or baker of some kind, and it's after-hours.

If this does not melt your heart with its brain-asplodin’ cuteness, you are made of STONE and we have nothing to offer each other.

First she’s with you in the dinette, then she’s showing you around at home. It’s cut and dry and adorable as shit. Love it. Okay! Back to the hot button side of the story. Final thought, for clarification and prompting of to-be-determined further discussion:

Some have incorrectly claimed that Vuolo is the first Jewish Playmate. Vuolo herself has agreed it is more likely that she merely is the first openly Jewish Playmate. (the wiki)

This has been certainly a long enough entry already, all apologies, so perhaps we ought to save the important and striking issue of why a beautiful woman looking to be famous in America might consider her Judaism a liability rather than an asset and choose to downplay this important aspect of her heritage and womanhood (*cough, cough* Holly Madison) for another day.

Après la folie Jimmy Choo du 14 novembre dernier, H&M nous présente une collection lingerie et accessoires signée Sonia Rykiel. Cette ligne de lingerie sera disponible à partir du 5 décembre dans 1 500 magasins H&M et certaines boutiques  de la maison Rykiel (une première pour une collaboration H&M). Surnommée ” reine de la maille”, la créatrice mode nous propose ici des pièces griffées à prix très abordables. Devant le succès de ces collaborations, la marque suédoise développe ce procédé pour  proposer à ses clientes des collections de créateurs à prix raisonnables.

Une seconde collaboration verra le jour le 20 février prochain avec une collection de tricots colorés, destinée aux femmes et fillettes.  Une collection exclusive qui rendra la collection encore plus désirable avec seulement 250 points de vente.

Une campagne de communication a été lancé pour l’occasion.  Dans la presse féminine on peut voir des publicités mettant en scène les mannequins Lara Stone, Caroline Trentini et Anne Vyalistsyna habillées des pièces sobres noires ou encore d’articles rétros roses poudrées.

L’agence Ubi bene a mis en place dans le métro parisien une campagne sténographiée, du 1er au 7 décembre. Ainsi, les deux stations  habituellement “fantômes” depuis 1939,  Croix-Rouge*  et St-Martin**, seront revêtues des visuels de la campagne. Les passagers pourront découvrir cette mise en scène lors du passage de leur rame de métro.

Une soirée de lancement se déroulera également demain soir, 1er décembre, au Grand Palais. Les internautes pourront assister en direct au défilé sur le site H&M à partir de 23h. Pour ne pas oublier cette date, le site H&M propose à ses visiteurs d’ajouter l’événement à leur calendrier et de  partager l’information sur différents réseaux sociaux (twitter, delicious, facebook etc.). La marque utilise désormais des techniques de marketing viral pour promouvoir ses collections.

For this Mondays Meet ‘n Greet Assignment the designer whom I really wanted to get to know better and tell you all about was IndigoBlue Dagostino, the fabulous designer behind Eternity Brides and Seldom Blue.  I first met IndigoBlue earlier in the year and since then have had the pleasure of blogging many of her wonderful designs.

I met the very gorgeous and talented IndigoBlue Dagostino at her instore cafe as pictured above, when she kindly agreed to answer a few questions for our Opium readers.

KV:  What brought you to SL and was designing something you had in mind when you joined?

IndigoBlue: I was looking around for a new game to play and had just discovered World Of Warcraft.  My cousin also plays a large part in EVE-TV so I was also playing around with that BUT…they just weren’t holding my attention, and were a bit too impersonal for me.  Then I stumbled into Second Life one day and that was it…I was hooked.  I had no idea about all the design opportunities when I joined, I was just loitering around in see through pants looking for the fun side of town!  I had picked up an old vintage victorian dress that was going for free when I got to the mainland and I was in heaven.  I had dreadful hair and body issues and nobody was coming near me and then all of a sudden a total GODDESS walked past with glittering shoes and flexi hair!!!  I couldnt believe what i was seeing! I practically rugby tackled her to the ground to get some tips.

KV:  Why did you start designing and how long ago did you open Eternity Brides and Seldom Blue?

IndigoBlue: I soon discovered the shopping side to SL and I started to do a little digging, how to make your own clothes, and since I’m already a graphic designer in rl, I thought I’d give it a go.  I downloaded the templates and BANG! I was in it for good, I think I probably set up my first wall of clothing around summer of 2008 so about 5 or 6 months into my sl experience.

KV:  How did you come up with the name Eternity Brides and Seldom Blue?

IndigoBlue: well…I started the game, got addicted and then decided that addiction loves company…so I dragged my brother, my sister AND my dad for a brief time into sl so my dad created Seldom Blue and we stuck with that.  More recently my sister and I have more or less taken over the business, and she wanted to concentrate on the bridal side, so she came up with the Eternity Brides part.

KV:  What was your first ever design and is it still for sale at any of your stores?

IndigoBlue: yup! my first ever design was my crochet outfit which is free in the back of my store all my early stuff is now free or a linden. The crochet is a trashy shorts and top combo with cutouts all over the place, totally sleazy but I was ecstatic when I finally put it on!

KV:  What is your favorite design and why?

IndigoBlue: I think if I had to choose just one, it would be my metallic blush latex range.  Latex is not my area of expertise and it was definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever worked on, simply because of all the shading.  It was tortuous but I love the way it turned out, its smooth, shiny and still girly without being too slutty.

KV:  I have tried designing myself and gave up as my photoshop skills were less than average and it was also very time consuming, how long on average does it take to complete one of your designs?

IndigoBlue: Theres a real pain barrier that I go through with every design.  I try to limit myself to one hour a night on sl and I’m always designing in the shop, I rarely go out.  I would say that EACH part of an outfit, ie thong/ bra etc..would take about 6 hours to design from start to finish, AND it was taking about 30 uploads per item before i was happy with it, the longer I go on, the more critical I get.  Now of course i’ve discovered emerald which allows for free temporary uploads which has revolutionised my work.  There ARE glitches with emerald but for designing its incredible to be able to upload multiple times and not get charged for it each time.

KV:  What do you think is the key to being a successful designer?

IndigoBlue: I realise myself how fragile my SL experience is since being suspended. At one point I was nearly ready to just wash my hands of the whole thing. I know how quickly SL can become a drain rather than a joy and it’s really sad when designers have to close down because its simply not working for them anymore.  I also don’t think I’m a successful designer, really nowhere near yet. I look up to a small specific selection of designers myself and admire their work greatly, but there are always people in their shops and hardly any in mine lol, so I think I’ve got a HUGE mountain to climb if I want to be successful.  The other thing is that I don’t actually HAVE enough time to design as much as I’d like, I would LOVE to do this full time! Wouldnt we all ?

KV:  How does it feel when you see someone wearing one of your designs around SL, or when you watch your designs being presented at a runway show?

IndigoBlue: I’ve only ever once seen someone at random wearing one of my outfits, and it was a highly emotional moment for me lol, I stalked them silently and gladly until the sun went down lol.   I’ve done one runway show and it was utterly AWESOME!!!!!!!! I felt totally overwhelmed and filled with joy and silliness that so many people had come together to make it possible, it was a fabulous experience!

KV:  I am aware that many of your new designs are blogged and appear on the main fashion feeds of SL and as a blogger myself I have often wondered how much of an impact do you think this has on your sales and the number of people visiting your stores?

IndigoBlue: I think the blogs are utterly imperative when I’m doing a general release. When I send notecards out to lots of different groups, it adds up to about 20,000 avs!! Which is incredible when you think about it. However the amount of girlies who actually drop into the store is considerably lower, I think I’m lucky to get 50 or so through the doors on an opening night. So I’m always sooo grateful for my wonderful friends and colleagues who are happy to blog my items, and thanks to them spreading the word it’s more likely that I will have more visitors inworld.

KV:  What would be your main advice for anyone wanting to start designing in SL?

IndigoBlue: Ask questions!!! questions questions all the time! harras groups for info, read LOADS of tutorials.  when you hit your designers Wall of Pain, stop for a night, and then go back and beat it down with a shovel.  I’m always happy to help out fellow designers and have passed psd files on to play with, i think its important for designers to help each other.

KV:  Aside from desiging, what other things do you like to do in your spare time in SL?

IndigoBlue: You know what i actually DONT have any spare time in SL, well maybe a few minutes here and there. What I would LIKE to do …is be much more sociable with my friends here in sl, so when they ask me out to dance I GO out to dance…but the devil in me won’t leave the shop, I’m my own worst enemy! The furthest I go from the shop is to “TRUTH” for new hair and straight back again, like a pinging elastic band, thats me lol

KV:  And finally, what are your goals for the future?

IndigoBlue: hmmm well my future in SL has changed now, due to the suspension. I no longer feel like I will stay forever (or until my fingers drop off), simply because (like I say on my blog) I don’t trust SL now.  So the way I feel about SL has changed, and is evolving in a different direction.  However, in terms of Seldom Blue and Eternity Brides, I am going to slow down on the bridal gowns because they take a LOT of time and I think I’m going to concentrate on lingerie and get utterly brilliant at that! I would like to do more runway shows and if I DO stay on forever in SL I’d love to expand the store and get my sister a better bloody computer so she can get more involved!!

Why do so many women (about 80% according to some studies) wear a bra that doesn’t fit? This is something that has always baffled me. Some I constantly have to fight the urge to go and tell random women that their bra doesn’t fit. I wonder if it would be more or less rude if I used these notes…

When I was 13 my boobs decided to make themselves appear pretty much out of thin air. I don’t remember going to buy my first bra or anything but I do remember jumping straight to B-cup (a size I should have realized to move on from way earlier than I actually did). The next three years can not really be described as fun. I was teased, by my so-called friends, as my bra didn’t quite fit and I was bigger than them (say it together now: jealousy). But at the time I didn’t know any better and I’ve inherited my breasts from my dad’s side so my mom was no use at all. As my boobs just kept on growing I eventually got fitted and into the habit of buying really good bras (which, especially in my current size, are a bit more expensive and hard to find — Change has some really good ones).

So, if you’re still a teenager and your body is constantly changing, I can understand that sometimes the bra just doesn’t fit. But grown women wearing ill-fitting bras should be made illegal. If it feels like everything wobbles too much when you walk chances are your bra is the wrong size. If you are constantly tightening the straps and the back of your bra is higher than the front your cup is too small and the band is too big.

So, if you are reading this and are uncertain whether or not your bra fits properly, go to a lingerie store or department and get yourself fitted. If you (for some reason) don’t like strangers seeing you without your shirt on, this is the way to measure it. The sizes in Europe and the US go differently, so here you can see a comparison of them.

The lovely and talented Swedish-born Ulrika Ericsson was in America working hard as a swimsuit model and looking for acting gigs when she posed for Playboy as Miss November 1996.

Get it? She is done up like the newsboy, at the newsstand in front of the display of Playboys. “Wuxtree, wuxtree!” Super-cute. Great theme, well-executed, and she has a very sweet innocence that makes it playfully tease-y instead of costumey and skankeriffic.

However, the acting thing must not have panned out, because other than Playboy credits, the imdb lists her most recent work in front of the camera as being a host for a Swedish show called “Nyehtsmorgon.”
