Summarization Pyramids

A summarization pyramid is a versatile tool that comes in many formats, has many sizes, and can be used with many prompts. It’s easy to adapt the basic foundation of this technique to your curriculum and your students’ needs.

Basic Sequence

Construct a pyramid of lines on a sheet of paper. When first playing with this format, begin with eight lines, as shown below.

For each line, choose prompts that yield one-word or short answers for the shorter lines and longer responses for longer lines. If you have a large pyramid and a prompt that requires a lengthy response, consider asking students to use more than one line of the pyramid for their response. Consider these prompts and add your own as you experiment with this strategy:

• A synonym for the topic
• An analogy between the topic and a sport
• One question the topic sparks in you
• Three attributes or facts about the topic
• Three words that best describe the topic
• A news headline that would capture the essence of the topic
• One or two other topics related to this topic
• Causes of the topic
• Effects of the topic
• Reasons we study the topic
• Arguments for the topic
• Ingredients of the topic
• Personal opinion of the topic
• Demonstration of the topic in action
• The larger category from this topic comes
• A formula or sequence associated with this topic
• Insight gained from studying the topic
• Tools for using the topic
• Three moments in the history of the topic
• One thing that we used to think about the topic that we’ve discovered to be incorrect
• Samples of the topic
• People who use the topic
• What the topic will be like in 25 years

This list could go on forever. As you decide on prompts and pyramid sizes, challenge yourself to choose experiences that will allow the students to interact with the topic in several ways. Your goal is to have your students learn something from more than one angle in order to promote retention of the concept or skill.

Variations and Extended Applications

Consider asking your students to create a visual related to the topic as they respond to your prompts. For example, use clouds with various forms of precipitation to express information about the water cycle, a ziggurat to express information about Mesopotamia, or a bar graph or pie chart to express information about graphing data.

Dual-Coding

Research on the “dual-coding” theory of retaining knowledge suggests that knowledge is stored in two forms-a linguistic form and an imagery form. The linguistic mode is semantic in nature. The imagery mode, in contrast, is expressed as mental pictures or even physical sensations, such as smell, taste, touch, kinesthetic association, and sound (Richardson, 1983). The imagery mode of representation is referred to as non-linguistic representation. The more that we ask our students to use both systems of representation—linguistic and non-linguistic—the better they are able to think about and recall knowledge.

“Linguistic contact is a key to the minds and behavior of other people.  When using their native language people not only communicate words, but also emotions and the roots and culture of their people.” —Ann-Christine Marttinen

Here are some thoughts from Ann Marttinen:

• When confronted by a new country, culture, and language, a child has to reestablish his personality in order to explain himself and to be accepted.
• Children should be encouraged to speak the local language, but not at the expense of their native tongue.
• Parents and teachers need to prevent excessive stress and help the child preserve his national identity, language and culture.  A strong sense of heritage and cultural identity gives the child a feeling of personal worth.  Destroy his self-esteem in his ability to communicate, and the child becomes frustrated easily.
• The worst thing a parent can do is to abandon the use of their native language in order to help their child quickly adapt to the language used in the new school or country.  When learning a new language, one’s vocabulary for endearment is limited.  The relationship between the parent and child suffers, as does closeness and family unity.

Here are few suggestions and cautions from Cynthia Storrs, SHARE, 1996:

• Don’t try to teach your child to read English the same year he or she is learning to read another language.  If your child is in a national school or preschool and is not beginning to learn reading at that time, you may want to start teaching if other indicators show that the child is ready to learn to read.
• Many children learn easily to read in their mother tongue with instruction coming first in another language.  They do this by transferring the phonic skills they have learned in acquiring the second language.
• As you read to your children in your mother tongue, get into the habit of asking them what they think will happen next.  At the end of the story, ask them to summarize what you read.
• Read-along stories with cassettes are very helpful.  Buy books in both languages (but not bilingual books—the child will probably pick one of the languages to read every time).
• Choose books and subject matter they really enjoy to encourage reading for pleasure (Ranger Rick, comic books, joke books, etc.).
• Leave notes around the house for them to read, with a treasure/reward at the end of the paper trail.

Is this baby crying in German or French?  A new study says we may be able to tell. The study was originally discussed on my sister pod, The World’s science podcast. It   concludes that we begin language acquisition in the womb. At that stage, we are, well, a captive audience to mama’s words; researchers say we pick up a bit of her accent and intonation. Then after birth, we cry in ways that imitate that accent and intonation.

Then it’s off to Ukraine, where the Ukrainian language (see alphabet above) is enjoying a government-sponsored revival. This comes at the expense of Russian – with the notable and ever-delightful exception of swear words: people still curse almost exclusively in Russian. Why? you tell me, please…In any case, the government’s support of Ukrainians, especially in schools and colleges has turned this into an election issue. The two front runners in next January’s presidential vote are the pro-Western Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who generally favors the promotion of Ukrainian, and the more Kremlin-oriented Viktor Yanukovych, who believes Russian should be protected.  Which leaves our Kiev-based reporter, Brigid McCarthy, somewhat conflicted as to which language to study.

Finally, a conversation with the two French guys behind cover band Nouvelle Vague. Their new album re-imagines punk and new wave classics by The Sex Pistols, Plastic Bertrand and others. The singers tend to be non-native English speakers, female and young — young enough in some cases not to have heard the originals, or know about the ethos and vibe of punk. I like a lot of their reinterpretions because they’re so wildly different from the originals, yet add something that was seemingly overlooked by the original artists. It’s as if the musical code — the language — is flipped to reveal something previously hidden.  So, the vicious anger of the Sex Pistols’ version of God Save the Queen becomes a sweet, hymnal folk song. The Police’s poppy So Lonely becomes a desperate, haunting dirge. There’s a great linguistic flip too:  for the one song with lyrics in French, Plastic Betrand’s Ça Plane Pour Moi, the singer is an English woman who enunciates the French words with a marked English accent.

At the end of our interview, I offered the Nouvelle Vague guys my two cents on the punk classics they might next tackle:  anything from Elvis Costello’s My Aim is True album, Richard Hell’s Blank Generation,  Iggy Pop’s Dog Food, and top of the list:  a very early single from Adam and the Ant called Young Parisians. They should sing that one in French.

Next imagine that you only sold these for the lowest price which your license allows of £197 Sterling each set (License Holders may never sell lower than this price to ensure that you all make maximum profits) in truth you will be charging nearer to £397 for each retail set sold, but for the sake of this example imagine they sell at £197 each. 

That would be a total income of: £19,700 from an average of just two sales at just £197 each per week (allowing for two no sale weeks)

 Consider that each 21 disc set requires 20 blank DVD-R discs and 1 blank CD-Rom disc to produce and that’s a total of 2,000 blank DVD-ROMs and 100 CD-ROMs required to manufacture and fulfill the orders. 

Using a site such as www.dvdshoponline.co.uk  (for this example – there are actually even cheaper sources) the DVD’s (which enable you to print direct onto the disc) would cost you £30 per 100 discs so for 2,000 DVD’S that’s a total of £600. 

Then you’d pay £10 for each 100 printable blank CD-ROM’s thus meaning that so far its cost you £610 to manufacture 100 sets of the entire package! 

Next you will need Two Ten Way DVD cases for each set and also one single DVD case for each set, a total of 200 ten way (£25 for 50 at example site shown) and 100 single DVD cases (£10 for 100 on example site) being required. 

That’s a total cost for cases for 100 sets of the package of: £110 thus bringing our running total so far to £720. 

Next each case will need a nice colour cover printing with each set needing three covers (as there are two ten way cases and a one single case) so that’s a total of 300 sheets of photo quality paper required and as 50 sheets costs £3-00 that’s a total of £18 for paper. 

Then there is ink which when you buy your ink cartridges cheap (via ebay etc) should cost you no more than the equivalent of 10p for each cover and lets say 5p max for each full colour DVD face which you print. So with 3 covers for each set and 21 discs that’s an ink cost for each set of £1-35 and a total cost of £135 to manufacture 100 sets. 

Finally you will need 100 large Padded jiffy envelopes to use sending the packages out to your customers which bought cheaply on net will cost you around 50p each so that’s a total of £50 to send out the 100 sets. 

And finally First Class or Airmail Postage to send out each package will need to be paid for so let’s say an average of £10 per set which is £1,000 to send out the example 100 sets being discussed here. In truth to send to UK they will be little more than £5 each first class but the rest allows for International postage costs. 

Add together the total of everything stated above and it comes to a figure of:£1923.

That means that each set to manufacture and send out to your customer costs you in this example £19-23p and even in this example where we are imagining you are only retailing them at £197 a set it gives you a total profit from each sale of: OVER – £177 

So with even only 100 sales in a year (average of 2 per week for 50 weeks) and even if you were only selling them at the bare minimum retail price allowed of £197 you’d still make by selling just 100 sets a profit of: £17,777 

Assuming that you have made the intelligent decision to make your one time payment to secure your Personal Limited Edition Platinum Master Resale Legal License to this set in full and as such will be paying just £1297.00, then even after getting back your original investment in this “Worst Case Scenario Example” you stand to make a BIG PROFIT OF – £16,480. 

And as this is a “worst case scenario” lets say you decide to buy a DVD duplicator which can burn Ten copies of each disc from your master each time without the need to use your computer. Well these can be bought online for less than £400 and will save you many hours of work. 

Oh and perhaps you need to buy a new printer that can be used to both print the covers and also the “labels” directly onto the discs then one of these can be got again online for less than £200. 

Even after investing into these two pieces of equipment you’d still in this “worst case scenario” have made a PROFIT OF – £ 15,880 and of course you’d still have all of the equipment which you can continue to use for years to come without any need for additional investment.

The recurrent Black Death of the Middle Ages has been viewed with horror by scholars of all periods. This essay will promote a more nuanced view of the effects of the bubonic plague and suggest that many of the consequences were based on factors often unconsidered.

The general view of this episode is incorporated in the following statements. “The Black Death was spread from port to port by inflected rats. It was then passed around by midgets. Victims of the Black Death grew boobs on their necks. Death rates exceeded one hundred percent in some towns” (Grossmonger, 1159, p. 14). “This was a time of stunned growth. The plague also helped the emergence of English as the national language of England, France and Italy” (Compostella, 1621, p. 34).

Forced by my reading of history to acknowledge the dire facts of a time in Medieval Europe characterized by plummeting health and wary physicians, I would present the Frommerian view that the crusades enlarged opportunities for travel (Frommery, 1439). As noted by Sallahaddin (1242), “Travellers are welcome in the home town of Christ. Come one, come all” (p. 32). Threats of infection were ignored as travellers made their way to the buffet of turkey spread before them on Christmas Day. In fact, figures of the amount of turkey disbursed on holy days were kept by clerks of the Vizier and amounted to an average of 3 lb per crusader (Vizier Stats, Vol. II, para 1297). On one holy day in 1309, for example, some 40,000 lb of turkey were disbursed, a figure that averages out to 104,000 lb per year between 1109 and 1309 (Vizier Stats, Vol. MCMII, para 4658), indicating a constant population of some 34,666 crusaders, which included woman and children.

These figures clearly show the considerable number of travellers arriving in the Holy Land despite threats of bubonic plague with accompanying disfigurement, and the frequent occurrence of midgets. Grossmonger’s (1159) statistics of over one hundred percent deaths in some [unspecified] towns are as much due to emigration as to death from the plague.

The second point to which I would like to draw the reader’s attention is the emergence of English as a parallel to the west-east propulsion of the crusades. It has been established by Fumble (1945, pp. 44-56) that the percentage of English spoken in England during the crusades was approximately 43%. Fumble (1945) noted that this percentage dropped as noted in studies carried out by graduate students across France and Italy during their summer vacations (Report on Linguistic Divergence, Francine & Giovanni, 1943-44). Francine stated that 12% of the French middle class (see Holzstein, 1932, for scales) understood “Hello,” “Goodbye” and “What” whereas the peasantry used purely gestural language forms. Giovanni found that 21% of northern Italians understood “Bank” and “Where” but only 2% of southern Italians understood “Show” and “Help” (see Appendices I & II). The findings were consistent with locational topography and direction of crusadical routes. The possibility must be acknowledged that not all crusaders reached the Holy Land but in fact settled down in palatable regions proximating the main routes.

Recent scholars have seen the Black Death as a negative factor in socio-economic stability in the Middle Ages but I would suggest that any instability was caused by push and pull factors related to the supply of copious amounts of fowl freely available in the Holy Land, rather than death from disease. A parallel to this mass exodus from England of crusading warriors was the dispersion of directional and practical linguistic terms along transmigrational routes. It can be shown today that travel in France and Italy is commoded by the natives’ fluent grasp of English, while percentages of English speakers in England actually hover around 25%. Thus, the Black Death can be seen to have engorged the European economy and promoted travel and linguistic prowess over a period considerably greater than two hundred years.

Do not confuse the spelling of descendant and descendent, which sound similar. Descendant is the only spelling of the noun, denoting somebody or something related to an ancestor, or something based on an earlier thing. Descendent is the usual spelling of the adjective, which means “going downward.”

It is estimated that Fifty to Ninety percent of the world’s languages will disappear in the next century; many with little significant documentation.

แต่ว่าในภาษาเหล่านี้มีคำจำเพาะที่หมายถึง God เช่นเดียวกับ Deus คือในภาษาฝรั่งเศส Dieu, ภาษาอิตาเลียน Dios, ภาษาสเปน Dios ?

มันน่าสนใจมากขึ้นเมื่อภาษาตระกูลอินโด- ยูโรเปียน เช่น บาลี ซึ่งเป็นสังคมพหุเวนิยมมาตลอด กลับมีคำที่หมายถึง เทพเจ้า เทวดา พระเจ้า ที่เป็น เพศสตรี!(อิตถีลิงค์) คือคำว่า “เทวตา” แปลว่า “สถานะแห่งการเป็นเทวดา, ความเป็นพระเจ้าหรือเทวดา” แต่คำว่า “เทวตตน” ซึ่งหมายถึงสถานะ หรือสภาพของเทวดา กลับเป็น นปุงสกลิงค์(Neuter) หรือเพศกลาง?
