We discussed about some design tips for Marmoleum floor patterns in an earlier post. People do find it intimidating when it comes to so many colors and design possibilities.

Marmoleum Click for residential applications

Some homeowners like to go with checker board pattern just because it is an easy solution. But to my mind, your pattern does not have to be so typical and so obvious. Now that you decided to go with Marmoleum Click for your new floors, make sure you get the most for your money. You really have so many options to add that visual impact to your room. Spend some time to figure out your unique design now. You will cherish your new floors for years to come.

Sahara, Van Gogh, and Barbados from Marmoleum Click series

See if you would like to go with a little bit of abstract design. Add a bright accent color in to couple of coordinating colors, and play with them! Depending on how big your space is, you may have a module of 4 or 9 or 16 tiles and repeat it.

Using a border around the perimeter or say, kitchen island, also is a simple way to add character.

Various borders are available from Forbo

If you are designing kids’ rooms, involve them in picking colors. A simple pattern like this is enough to create visual interest.

accent color to add that character

A rug like look may work good in any bedroom.

I don't need an area rug for 10 months of the year, really!

Make sure you try to stagger the joints if you are using panels. With the revised Click II system, the length of a panel now equals to 3 square tiles. It may be hard to calculate the quantities for each color if your pattern is too complicated. Why not hire the professional instead! At LFD&M we are experts at space design, material estimation, and installation. Whether it is just new floors or you need a holistic design upgrade, talk to us and we would be happy to assist you.

Why does everyone use vinyl flooring instead of linoleum, even though the latter lasts longer and is

Why does everyone use vinyl flooring instead of linoleum, even though the latter lasts longer and is “greener”? Because vinyl is cheaper? Maybe, but I suspect it has a lot to do with the fact that you can actually go to a store, see it, and buy it! Installers are everywhere in case you don’t want to lay it yourself. I’m finding out this is not the case with linoleum, at least in these parts.

The Colorado Forbo Marmoleum rep gave me the name of a company in Pueblo West that sells Marmoleum. We make a trip out there today to check the place out and, after much driving around, find the address. It’s a little warehouse-type building hidden back off the street in an industrial area. There’s no name whatsoever on the building and the door is forbiddingly steel and windowless. And it’s actually a painting business. Hmm! This doesn’t look right. Looks like it’s just a place where they keep their equipment.

So I call another Forbo telephone number and get the name of another Pueblo dealer. They have a display of Marmoleum Click, a different kind of linoleum tile that we don’t want. No, they can’t get what we want, not even by special order. Why? Because they don’t have a certified installer on their staff. What difference does that make, since we’re going to install it ourselves? Because they don’t, they can’t, they won’t, and they are about ready to get rid of the Click display anyway. And that’s that. Ye gods, how many sales do they lose because they haven’t gotten around to sending someone to the installation class?

Now what? Are we going to have to go to Denver or Colorado Springs to find someone who will sell us this stuff? Or buy it online from heaven-knows-who? In frustration I call the painting company, expecting to get an answering machine at best, and to my complete amazement a nice man answers and says sure, we can get it for you. He will call Forbo to make sure the colors we want are still available and let me know. He acts like he understands what I am talking about.

I should point out that we are nowhere near ready to lay linoleum. So why the rush? Because it’s getting close to the end of the year and very soon Forbo will discontinue some colors. You and I know exactly which ones those will be! They already got rid of Cool Green, a nice 1930s color, in their heavier weight linoleum but I think — and this has to be confirmed — that it’s currently available in a lighter weight material suitable for the upstairs bathroom.

Edit: I waited and waited for the painting company to call back. I had to call them twice before I got any help at all, and it was meager help at that. So in the end I ordered tiles by phone from Building for Health Eco-Center in Carbondale, Colorado. The owner, Cedar Rose Guelberth, was immensely helpful and tracked down everything I wanted. She even contacted Forbo Marmoleum and found out that they do recommend, and have instructions for, the use of their product as a countertop material. I’ll be ordering from Cedar Rose again.

These will be the linoleum schemes for the Blizzard Gulch “Ranger Station”. (Sorry for the fuzzy images. I haven’t figured out a way to make them sharp once they’re loaded into the blog post.)

*

- materiali d’attrito: materiali tessili

In Italia, l’esposizione all’amianto è motivo di morte per circa mille persone all’anno.

The barn cats don’t use a litter box. They go to the door when they want to go out, like a do

The barn cats don’t use a litter box. They go to the door when they want to go out, like a dog does. Of course sometimes they’re just tired of being in. Sometimes they’re downright annoying.

I’d heard a cat meowing and ignored it. Finally, I got up to let the cats out. Punkin was sitting on the steps and had an expression on her face that looked like… you don’t really expect me to go out in the cold.

Since John passed away, I’ve been booting them out overnight. They have a bad habit of deciding at 4AM that they want to go out. That doesn’t thrill me. John would always be the one that would get up and let them out. He never commented he just did it. If I’m getting up at 4AM there better be a much better reason than a cat deciding to go outside.

Well, I went to get Punkin and wondered why she didn’t want to go out now. I then realized that it wasn’t her that I’d heard. Rascal is frantically running around upstairs. Rascal is laid back and mellow so I have no idea what is up with him. I call him to come down. He starts to head down and then bolts to my bedroom.

I think what in the world is wrong with him.

As I’m walking upstairs to get him, he runs behind the door and deposits a pile of poop that was huge for his size (If he was a dog I’d say Great Dane sized)!

Grreat. It stunk worse than Nathaniel’s worst diaper. It’s 2 AM. I’m tired. I just want to go to bed.

I grabbed him and deposited him on the front porch. I couldn’t even be mad at him. Poor cat had told me that he needed to go out. I’d just tuned him out. He’s five years old and never had an accident before.

I thought to myself… this wouldn’t have happened if John was alive. John would have put him out long ago. Sigh.

So… 2AM, I’m trying to get stinky cat poop cleaned off of the carpet. Rascal couldn’t even follow John’s command of, “keep it on the linoleum.” That’s is what he’d always tell Winnie when she was having a hairball (she’s an inside cat). Actually, worked most of the time with her. Of course, Winnie cat would do just about anything for John. He adored her and she adored him.

Winnie & John

In one of John’s visits to the hospital, they’d sent biological odor eliminator home with us. Turns out that it came in handy to get rid of the stench.

I went to bed missing John… wishing I’d paid more attention and been more attentive. John just did such a good job of taking care of things.

More than 80 percent of the 400 Olson Hall residents broke out in a nasty rash this week. The flaking, itching, red students first mistook the rash for an STD.

“We had an orgy last week and found out afterward that my friend Jake has crabs,” said sophomore business major Lee Wilks. “We were pretty relieved to find out the rash was from something else.”

After a few of the students mustered the confidence to have their potential STD diagnosed, they found out they were allergic to linoleum.

“It makes sense,” said fashion design major Sally Rabble. “We were rolling around on the floor a lot during that orgy.”

Rabble added, between intense scratching of her scalp and inner thighs, that she was unaware of her linoleum allergy. The rash appears as a lumpy red mass on various body parts and often bleeds unexpectedly. There is currently no cure, according to CDC spokesman Tim Rimmel.

“At least it’s not crabs,” Rimmel said.

Soooooo…. (averts eyes, whistles)……remember my post about the bathroom floor being my Moby-Dick? And how I was going to use my bare hands to chip away at the linoleum to reveal the beautiful wide-plank pine floors underneath? Well, yeah, that didn’t go over so well.

I had Sunday afternoon all to myself to get the job done, so I started by buying a little crowbar at Ace hardware. The tip was the perfect size for noodling under the brittle, dry, linoleum. But even with that fine tip and beautiful torque, the linoleum still wasn’t peeling up in great strips like I hoped it would. Out of frustration or inspiration, I’m not sure which, I just started jackhammering away at the linoleum with the tip of the crowbar, and lo and behold, I actually started making some recognizable progress. I suddenly realized that being too deliberate–placing tip of crowbar under flooring, carefully lifting–was going to take all day. But this Psycho-esque stabbing was getting me somewhere. (Remember– this was all taking place in the bathroom!)

It was then that I recalled a nice fellow at Ace hardware telling me several weeks ago, back when I first started this project, that they had a power tool for rent that could help me get rid of the linoleum. After tantalizing me with this magical tool, he then advised against it, saying it would gouge the floor. But I decided yesterday that this tool was going to be the answer to the bathroom problem, so I got back in the car and went back to the rental counter at Ace hardware. I told the tool rental guy I needed something that was like a reciprocating saw (this I picked up from All the Way Home, because I swear that’s what Giffels said he used for the tiles in his kitchen. Oh wait–maybe they were actual ceramic tiles, not resilient flooring after all, now that I think about it.) Anyway, my mistake, I think, was in saying “reciprocating” without really knowing what that means. The guy behind the counter rented me a Sawzall.

I also bought a $10 blade called The Shark or The Tiger or something, which you’re supposed to stick inside that little clamp-like thing at the end of the saw (the same clamping thing that’s in drills, where you put the bit in), which was then supposed to be tightened with a little allen wrench like the ones that come with every box of furniture you buy at Ikea. I don’t know if I just didn’t tighten the thing up enough or what, but within minutes of turning on the Sawzall, the blade first fell over, kind of limp-like, then shot out the end of the Sawzall and ended up about 2 feet away from the linoleum it was supposed to be scraping up. Not to mention that the Sawzall itself was so heavy and made so much noise that it scared me half to death, especially considering that I was alone in the house at night with nothing but construction lights hanging from nails to light my work. I think I used the Sawzall for all of 15 seconds before deciding that Nick was right–I should have just asked the Horseman to do it. The Horseman could probably get rid of this flooring using nothing but his bare hands in a few hours. But no–I had to go spend $18 on a replacement crowbar (I lost the first one I bought), $15 on a Sawzall rental (yup–a dollar a second), and $10 on a stupidly named blade that doesn’t stay locked into place, only to realize that the same amount of money could have bought me about 3 hours of the Horseman’s time. And he actually would have finished the job.

Nick was kind enough not to say “I told you!” to me, even though I say that to him so often that now he knows to beat me to the punch by saying, “You told me!” In fact, he even defended my honor by saying that the tool rental guy was a jerk for suggesting a Sawzall in the first place.

But we all know the real culprit here: hubris. There are some things you just have to learn to let go of. This floor is one of them. We’re calling the Horseman first thing tomorrow.

Forbo, the manufacturers of Marmoleum Click floating floor system claims that their new design for the joints is almost waterproof. The tongue and groove joints are pretty tight and when installed correctly form a snug fitting. As mentioned in the earlier post, they mention if the spills are wiped dry right away, one should not worry about water penetrating through.

However, you raised a very good point. The sheet linoleum just like vinyl, being a monolithic surface acts as a very good water barrier. Even though it is stated that Marmoleum Click can be installed anywhere in the house, one has to be careful while laying this floating floor system next to bathtub or next to sinks where kids may spill some water and there may be a possibility of it going unnoticed for several hours. If your situation allows you to use a “J” mold flashing next to the bath tub or such, that would help keep water from flowing down on the floor.

I came across one instance where we had installed Marmoleum Click in the kitchen for one client here in Bay area. They happened to have a leak in the sink pipe underneath and did not notice it right away. The water leaked through the cabinets, under the floating floor for what seemed like couple of days. The cork base on Marmoleum Click readily absorbed water and eventually the floor swelled with moisture. They actually had to take the floor apart, dry the panels all the way, and re-install after few days.

With such fancy floor materials one has to be vigilant especially in areas like kitchen and bathrooms.

And call this floor my Moby-Dick. I will conquer this.

Night shot of the bathroom floor

I finally got to take a second stab at this thing tonight after work while Nick was home with Sadie. When I first tried to pry off this flooring, it was stuck to the 135-year old pine boards underneath it with a viscous glue formed from all the cat pee that had seeped through the carpet and plywood tacked down over the linoleum and mixed into the original adhesive that bound the linoleum sheets to the floor. I was able to lift up a lot of the stinky flooring with a thin crowbar, but vast swaths of it stayed stuck.

But now that some time has passed, and the carpet and plywood has been lifted and discarded, the old linoleum has dried out, becoming more brittle and more vulnerable to my crowbar. While Sadie was at home eating dinner in her high chair, I was able to go to the house unencumbered and alone for the first time in weeks. I plugged in the big chain of construction lights that now hang around the house and went to work with the only tools I could find. Missing from my arsenal was the perfect tool for the job, the small crowbar I used in the first round, so I used a small paint scraper instead. I imagined that the Horseman and his family could see my silhouette through the window, bending and scraping, looking for all the world like a mad Miss Havisham doing a renovation in her attic.

I was surprised to find that even without the torque afforded me by the crowbar, I was able to get up some decent chunks of linoleum with the tip of the paint scraper. This did not happen before. As the pieces came up, the scent of eau de gato wafted upwards, reminding me why we started this whole job in the first place.

Our floor sander claims he can just sand down the last of this linoleum stuck to the floor, but I really don’t want linoleum (or worse, vinyl) dust floating around our house, no matter how well we clean or filter the air afterwards. Nick thinks we should just hire the Horseman to do it, but I think we’ve already spent enough money paying other people to work on this house, and dammit, I want to get my own hands dirty! I know there will be plenty of time for me to do lots and lots (and lots) of work when we move in, but it’s really frustrating to sit by for three months feeling like you aren’t doing anything. This is one of the few things I can do now.

So this weekend, while Nick is working, I’m going to drop off Sadie at my mom’s, buy myself a new crowbar, and demolish this whale of an eyesore. Mark my words!

Some linoleum colors may be more prone to fading due to exposure to direct sunlight than others. Ov

Some linoleum colors may be more prone to fading due to exposure to direct sunlight than others. Over a period of time you may see subtle, slightly darker patches say underneath a chest. If you move such furniture though, the newly exposed area will fade in a short time, so you will not be able to tell the difference.

There is another phenomenon called “Ambering” that occurs during the manufacturing process of linoleum, though. While the linoleum is curing in the drying room, a yellowish film may appear on the surface of the linoleum due to the linseed oil oxidation process. So you may see some “yellowing” on your newly delivered product. But this film will disappear after the linoleum is exposed to either natural or artificial light. You don’t have to worry about dissipation of this yellow film prior to installation or prior to applying floor finish after your installation.

When we did Marmoleum Click floors at home, we did not really see any yellowing on our new product, even though we had dark and light colors. And as far as fading due to sunlight exposure is concerned, I am not too worried about it, because with a few hours of exposure, the darker patches will go away anyway!

There are many factors that need to be considered when you are designing your home. These include family composition, pets, hobbies and entertaining. The size of the rooms, colors and materials are important to the full design.

Selecting materials for your personal space is an extremely important step and need to match your lifestyle. Consider your need for product durability, function, stain resistance and available warranties. When I work with clients, I take a great deal of time to understand and assess both the needs and wants of the individuals involved.

The type, size and ages of your family members will help to determine your needs. If you live on alone, you may select white plush carpet or silk upholstery for your furniture whereas, if you have young children you would likely prefer linoleum floors and semi gloss washable paint for walls.

Do you have a dog, cat or guinea pig? Pets can ruin a home if the right surfaces are not installed. A back entry with a dog shower or tiled floors may be in your plan to accommodate the pets. To prevent fibers being pulled out by animal claws, manufacturers recommend shag carpets as opposed to loop styles.

Hobbies can be an important part of a persons’ daily routine. Proper lighting and book storage need to be available, for example, if you are an avid reader. You might purchase a games table if you play a lot of cards or completely decorate a separate room for sewing and crafts.

Is entertaining a big part of your evenings and weekends? Do you have a lot of dinner parties that require ample amounts of seating? A fully equipped kitchen may be considered if you love to cook for guests. A large island with stools will allow you to visit with your friends and family while showing off your culinary skills.

Your home not only should be designed to meet your needs but also be a reflection of you.
