From an interview in the November 1999 Linux Journal magazine, some excerpts with my refutations:

Margie: How about religion?

Linus: Hmmmm, completely a-religious — atheist. I find that people seem to think religion brings morals and appreciation of nature.”

Really genius? You mean you didn’t know that the Bible says to be thankful for God’s creation? Dur? It only says that all throughout the Bible and has been taught by millions of Christians for hundreds of years. You’re a moron narcissist with your head stuck in your feelings living in your own tiny closed-box little world. Wake up already stupid and stop focusing only on you.

“I actually think it detracts from both.”

Well that’s neat, the ignorant FEELS (barely “thinks”) it “detracts”, APPLAUSE HE USED THE WORLD “DETRACTS” EVERYONE! THAT MUST MAKE HIM A GENIUS IN PHILOSOPY AND RELIGION!

“It gives people the excuse to say, “Oh, nature was just created”,”

No moron, the Bible does not say, “Just say nature was created”. Why would it you truth-lazy idiot? Think man, and finish your thoughts for once.

“and so the act of creation is seen to be something miraculous.”

Oh you mean you know how to create particles and physical laws from a formless void, and you’re still not impressed? Do you even know what the word “miracle” means?

“I appreciate the fact that, ‘Wow, it’s incredible that something like this could have happened in the first place.’

But you don’t appreciate that God made it? What a moron.

God: “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”

God: “The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, 10and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.”

“I think we can have morals without getting religion into it,”

And whatever you feel is true because you feel it. And whatever you think is true because you thought so. Dumb.

“and a lot of bad things have come from organized religion in particular.”

Yes the Bible shoots flaming arrows and spears and tells people to lie, steal, commit adultery, disrespect your parents, hate relatives, neighbors, foreigners, enemies, the needy, lowly, orhphans, elderly, widows, kids, males and females, and to make idols and worship them and deny because you feel like it that anyone more intelligent or powerful than you could exist. Evil slandering moron.

“I actually fear organized religion because it usually leads to misuses of power.”

Wow you fear men, women and children? So you’re paranoid, a coward, you’re thoughts are irrational and warped by fear? Yep: sounds disorganized to me. And don’t you know that disorganized, ranting, anti-social lawless idiots who love ignorance and are addicted to pleasure are so much LESS scary than those who abuse the world by NOT LYING, NOT stealing, NOT committing adultery, NOT hating their family, their neighbors, foreigners, enemies, the young, elderly, needy and disadavantaged, NOT making idols or worshiping imaginary gods, BUT HELPING those who really need help, EVEN WHEN THEY THEMSELVES ARE POOR AND SUFFERING, being friendly to all, being loving even to those who hate them for doing good? Damn those Christians for being scary by being loving and organized and not hateful and chaotic! Wait, where have I heard that chaos word before… reminds me of random, of random accident… of “randomness did it!!!” “things are random and just because of chaos!!!” What a stupid “god” of the gaps God-haters have.

“Yeah [as in holy wars], and I find it kind of distasteful having religions that tell you what you can do and what you can’t do.”

God isn’t a religion moron, he’s a person, not a set of rules. And since you can’t tell the difference between something living and non-living, being instructions and a living thing, you must have also hated your parents and hate the government and police and scientific books for telling you what you can and can’t do, what is and isn’t possible you morality-hater, you law-hater, you science-hater, you reality-hater, you truth-hater.

And don’t you know that Baptists and Presbyterians, especially the kids, for feeding and clothing the homeless and giving them for free and helping them to understand the most peace-bringing, helpful, studied, and oldest book in the world, and not expecting any thanks back except in brief moments when they aren’t obeying that very book which tells them not to expect thanks, but to think that they are unworthy of even a thankyou being that they are far from perfect by God’s standards? Yeah, they launch so many holy “Wars”. That’s Muslims you blind moron, who is so thick-skulled that not even a thousand Muslim blowing themselves up along with innocent people, even the unborn and little Muslim kids, even other Muslims, makes a dent on your thick reality-hating skull. Not even atheist dominated governments killing 150,000,000 in less than 100 years, 33.33 times more than Catholics kill every hundred years (and it took them 1000 years to kill 50,000,000), wakes you up to the evil of denying that God exists and ignoring him and the teachings of the Bible and the extreme “radical” hypocrisy and opposite of any physical evolution that atheism leads to.

“Catholicism is an example of that kind of non-permissiveness, and I think that is very easy to get into if you are an organized religion.”

Why do you keep referring to beings as religions? And now you’re calling them organized religions? PEOPLE join religions, not “organized religions.” And oh yeah God-forbid anyone telling anyone else right from wrong… hey wait, then shouldn’t you shut up about organized religions being bad and anti-social, anti-learning loners being good? Confused contradictory hypocrite much? And hmmm, what a suprise (not) that you’re Hellish operating system has a cult following of so many anti-social, socially-poor “misfits” and loners, also known as “geeks” and “nerds” who reject professionals while lying by pretending to want their help. Such fanataics remind me of a certain polluted, wicked encyclopedia who wage a holy war against the truth. Is anyone intelligent enough to figure out which cult encyclopedia I’m referring to?

“Religion is a very strange idea. In Finland, nobody cares. Many people are religious in Finland,”

Contradict yourself much? And who cares if nobody cares in Finland except careless people like you? Why do you say pointless things? Stop ranting.

“but it’s not a political issue.”

Nah: religion never affects governments and governments never have anything to say about religion, especially Finland where “many people are religious”. Nah, beliefs about what is moral or not just never affect anything let alone who you pick as your leaders and how your leaders treat those they are governing don’t ya know? Blind moron.

“Over here, religion has become politicized,”

No moron: America laws have always been heavily influenced by the Bible, that’s because the founding Fathers were either Christians or partially Christian. Even Thomas Jefferson who was too evil and stupid to admit that God had the power to do a single thing, let alone an amazing one, promoted the laws of Christ (though Jefferson hypocritically ignored the greatest: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your mind and with all your strength and with all your spirit and with all your soul” and not suprisingly then, chopped the Bible down into a little convenient book more tolerable to his evil heart, mind and body.

And oh no, you mean Christians actually don’t want atheists ruling over them, atheists who love disorganized stupidity, who worship Randomness and Chaos? You mean they actually try and have good laws over them and not, “Thou shalt give your tax dollars to ‘children’, including true Christian children, so that they can murder their ‘babies’ while in emotional distress or unable to think impartially or clearly, if they were raped by an agnostic, atheist, false Christian, pagan, Satanist or decided to have sex so that life will be more convenient for them and their atheist, false Christian, pagan, Satanist and more convenient for their cut to pieces baby or babies thrown in the trash without a drop of care for them or the pain they suffer when cut to pieces.” What was that about you, an atheist, not liking laws forced on you by organized religions? What do you think of organized atheists, agnostics, pagans, Satanists, Catholics and other “Saved-by-my-deeds-and-obeying-God-a-little Christians”? What do you think of organized liberals? Why single out “orderly religions”? Since when is any and every philosophy that doesn’t acknowledge god or a God as whom we are responsible to, always good or even partially good? So the philosophy of “randomy do whatever you want” is really a good thing to you Mr. Disorganized Go-At-It-Alone Atheist?

“so you have the fringe people in the news.”

What? So, the majority of Americans, being Christians, let alone religious, and who protest against various anti-Biblical laws, are the ones who are the “fringe”? Atheits don’t even make up the a third of the world’s population let alone being the majority in America you non-genius.

“And then people are afraid to talk about it because it has political implications,”

Paranoid, ranting, truth-ignorer says what?

“and that’s usually not true in most of Europe.”

You mean Christians can openly preach the gospel in Russia and the former Soviet nation-states? Yes, I love these examples!:

“Religion is a personal matter,”

You mean religion has no influence on anything outside of a person’s mind? Really Mr. “Over here, religion has become politicized”? Really Mr. “Yeah [as in holy wars], and I find it kind of distasteful having religions that tell you what you can do and what you can’t do.”?

“but does not matter for anything else.”

Yes, you’re right, it was atheists who came up with:

Don’t make up imaginary gods
don’t make idols of them to worship
don’t use the name of Yahweh,
the name of your God,
FOR A SELFISH REASON
TO MAKE YOURSELF
APPEAR GREAT IN
THE EYES OF OTHERS
UNJUSTLY,
don’t lie,
don’t steal,
honor your father and your mother,
don’t crave your neigbor’s wife or his property
don’t murder.

And were so wise that they came up with all those profoundly basic good things all
in a row too! And just a few minutes and hours later even came up with these!:

Don’t mistreat a foreigner or oppress him;

Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan;

Don’t hate your brother in your heart, instead, love your neighbor as yourself;

Don’t follow a group in doing wrong;

When you give testimony in a lawsuit don’t pervert justice by siding with a group;

Don’t pervert justice; don’t show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great,
but judge your neighbor fairly;

Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought: “The seventh year, the year for canceling
debts, is near,”so that you do not show ill will toward your needy brother and give him
nothing. He may then appeal to Yahweh against you and you will be found guilty of sin.
Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart;

If a man has recently married, he must not be sent to war or have any other duty laid on
him. For one year he is to be free to stay at home and bring happiness to the wife he has
married.

When you lay siege to a city for a long time, fighting against it to capture it,
don’t destroy its trees by putting an ax to them, because you can eat their fruit.
Don’t cut them down. Are the trees of the field people, that you should besiege them?
However, you may cut down trees that you know are not fruit trees and use them to build
siege works until the city at war with you falls.

Do not move your neighbor’s boundary stone set up by your predecessors in the inheritance
you receive in the land Yahweh your God is giving you to possess.

This is the rule concerning the man who kills another and flees there to save his life—
one who kills his neighbor unintentionally, without malice aforethought. 5 For instance,
a man may go into the forest with his neighbor to cut wood, and as he swings his ax to
fell a tree, the head may fly off and hit his neighbor and kill him. That man may flee
to one of these cities and save his life. 6 Otherwise, the avenger of blood might pursue
him in a rage, overtake him if the distance is too great, and kill him even though he is
not deserving of death, since he did it to his neighbor without malice aforethought. This
is why I command you to set aside for yourselves three cities.

select some towns to be your cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone
accidentally may flee. They will be places of refuge from the avenger, so that a person
accused of murder may not die before he stands trial before the assembly;

(This passage was given by God soon after Moses died): When he flees to one of these cities,
he is to stand in the entrance of the city gate and state his case before the elders of that
city. Then they are to admit him into their city and give him a place to live with them. If
the avenger of blood pursues him, they must not surrender the one accused, because he killed
his neighbor unintentionally and without malice aforethought. He is to stay in that city until
he has stood trial before the assembly and until the death of the high priest who is serving
at that time. Then he may go back to his own home in the town from which he fled;

If Yahweh your God enlarges your territory, as he promised on oath to your forefathers,
and gives you the whole land he promised them, 9 because you carefully follow all these
laws I command you today—to love the LORD your God and to walk always in his ways—then
you are to set aside three more cities. 10 Do this so that innocent blood will not be
shed in your land, which the LORD your God is giving you as your inheritance, and so
that you will not be guilty of bloodshed.

But if a man hates his neighbor and lies in wait for him, assaults and kills him,
and then flees to one of these cities, the elders of his town shall send for him,
bring him back from the city, and hand him over to the avenger of blood to die. Show
him no pity. You must purge from Israel the guilt of shedding innocent blood, so that
it may go well with you.

Anyone who kills a person is to be put to death as a murderer only on the testimony of
witnesses, but no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness;

Don’t accept a ransom for the life of a murderer, who deserves to die. He must surely
be put to death.

One witness is not enough to convict a man accused of any crime or offense he may have
committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. If
a malicious witness takes the stand to accuse a man of a crime, the two men involved
in the dispute must stand in the presence of the LORD before the priests and the judges
who are in office at the time. The judges must make a thorough investigation, and if the
witness proves to be a liar, giving false testimony against his brother, then do to him
as he intended to do to his brother. You must purge the evil from among you. The rest of
the people will hear of this and be afraid, and never again will such an evil thing be
done among you. Show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand,
foot for foot.

Thousands of years later this “always only angry”, “merciless”, “nonsensical”, “distasteful”
God continued to speak out against disobedience:

The people of the land practice extortion and commit robbery; they oppress the poor and needy
and mistreat the alien, denying them justice. – The prophet Ezekiel

“That’s how I think it should be done.”

What? “but does not matter for anything else” is how religion should be done? So you should only think about religion and that’s all, even if you realize it’s right or good and that God exists and commands you to teach others why they should believe and persuade them to love him and do right? Extremely stupid much?

A woman named Margie, replied to this atheist with: “Yes, we were founded to keep the two separated. Then the Moral Majority found out what a large constituency they had, and…” No moron, THE CHRISTIAN MAJORITY YOU MORON NOT “OH JUST SOME ATHEISTS WHO HAPPENED TO BE MORAL”. AND NO MARGIE MORON, RELIGION WAS NOT KEPT SEPERATE FROM THE GOVERNMENT:

“We, greatly commending, and graciously accepting of, their Desires for the Furtherance of so noble a Work, which may, by the Providence of Almighty God, hereafter tend to the Glory of his Divine Majesty, in propagating of Christian Religion to such People, as yet live in Darkness and miserable Ignorance of the true Knowledge and Worship of God…

John Hancock said, “In circumstances as dark as these, it becomes us, as Men and Christians, to reflect that whilst every prudent measure should be taken to ward off the impending judgments, …at the same time all confidence must be withheld from the means we use; and reposed only on that God rules in the armies of Heaven, and without His whole blessing, the best human counsels are but foolishness… ” – April 15, 1775″, the proclamation of the “Day of Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer, with a total abstinence from labor and recreation”;

Patrick Henry said, “It cannot be emphasized too clearly and too often that this nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religion, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason, peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.” May 1765, Speech to the House of Burgesses;

Patrick Henry said, “This is all the inheritance I can give my dear family. The religion of Christ can give them one which will make them rich indeed.” — The Last Will and Testament of Patrick Henry;

Patrick Henry said, “The Bible is worth all other books which have ever been printed.”;

John Jay said, “Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.” – October 12, 1816., The Correspondence and Public Papers of John Jay, Henry P. Johnston, ed., New York: Burt Franklin, 1970, Vol. IV, p. 393;

Samuel Johnston said, “It is apprehended that Jews, Mahometans (Muslims), pagans, etc., may be elected to high offices under the government of the United States. Those who are Mahometans, or any others who are not professors of the Christian religion, can never be elected to the office of President or other high office, [unless] first the people of America lay aside the Christian religion altogether, it may happen. Should this unfortunately take place, the people will choose such men as think as they do themselves. – July 30, 1788 at the North Carolina Ratifying Convention, Elliot’s Debates, Vol. IV, pp 198-199, Governor Samuel Johnston;

James Madison said, “We’ve staked our future on our ability to follow the Ten Commandments with all of our heart.”;

“We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We’ve staked the future of all our political institutions upon our capacity… to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.” – 1778, to the General Assembly of the State of Virginia;

Thomas Paine said “It has been the error of the schools to teach astronomy, and all the other sciences, and subjects of natural philosophy, as accomplishments only; whereas they should be taught theologically, or with reference to the Being who is the author of them: for all the principles of science are of divine origin. Man cannot make, or invent, or contrive principles: he can only discover them; and he ought to look through the discovery to the Author. … The evil that has resulted from the error of the schools, in teaching natural philosophy as an accomplishment only, has been that of generating in the pupils a species of atheism. Instead of looking through the works of creation to the Creator himself, they stop short, and employ the knowledge they acquire to create doubts of his existence. They labour with studied ingenuity to ascribe every thing they behold to innate properties of matter, and jump over all the rest by saying, that matter is eternal.” – 1810, The Existence of God;

Benjamin Rush said, “I lament that we waste so much time and money in punishing crimes and take so little pains to prevent them…we neglect the only means of establishing and perpetuating our republican forms of government; that is, the universal education of our youth in the principles of Christianity by means of the Bible; for this Divine Book, above all others, constitutes the soul of republicanism.” “By withholding the knowledge of [the Scriptures] from children, we deprive ourselves of the best means of awakening moral sensibility in their minds.” c. 1790, a letter in Defense of the Bible in all schools in America;

Benjamin Rush said, Christianity is the only true and perfect religion.”;

Benjamin Rush said, “If moral precepts alone could have reformed mankind, the mission of the Son of God into our world would have been unnecessary.”;

Benjamin Rush said, “Let the children who are sent to those schools be taught to read and write and above all, let both sexes be carefully instructed in the principles and obligations of the Christian religion. This is the most essential part of education” March 28, 1787, Letters of Benjamin Rush, “To the citizens of Philadelphia: A Plan for Free Schools”;

Noah Webster said, “The duties of men are summarily comprised in the Ten Commandments, consisting of two tables; one comprehending the duties which we owe immediately to God-the other, the duties we owe to our fellow men.”

Noah Webster said, “In my view, the Christian religion is the most important and one of the first things in which all children, under a free government ought to be instructed… No truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian religion must be the basis of any government intended to secure the rights and privileges of a free people.” 1828, in the preface to his American Dictionary of the English Language;

Noah Webster said, “Let it be impressed on your mind that God commands you to choose for rulers just men who will rule in the fear of God [Exodus 18:21]… If the citizens neglect their duty and place unprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted… If our government fails to secure public prosperity and happiness, it must be because the citizens neglect the Divine commands, and elect bad men to make and administer the laws. The History of the United States, New Haven: Durrie and Peck, 1832, pp. 336-337, 49;

Noah Webster said, “All the miseries and evils which men suffer from vice, crime, ambition, injustice, oppression, slavery and war, proceed from their despising or neglecting the precepts contained in the Bible.” – History, by Noah Webster, p. 339;

Noah Webster said, “The Bible was America’s basic textbook in all fields.” – Our Christian Heritage p.5;

Noah Webster said, “Education is useless without the Bible” [Noah Webster. Our Christian Heritage p.5;

George Washington said, "What students would learn in American schools above all is the religion of Jesus Christ.” [speech to the Delaware Indian Chiefs May 12, 1779

"To the distinguished character of patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian" [May 2, 1778, at Valley Forge]

During his inauguration, Washington took the oath as prescribed by the Constitution but added several religious components to that official ceremony. Before taking his oath of office, he summoned a Bible on which to take the oath, added the words “So help me God!” to the end of the oath, then leaned over and kissed the Bible.

“O Most Glorious God, in Jesus Christ, my merciful and loving Father; I acknowledge and confess my guilt in the weak and imperfect performance of the duties of this day. I have called on Thee for pardon and forgiveness of my sins, but so coldly and carelessly that my prayers are become my sin, and they stand in need of pardon. … I have sinned against heaven and before Thee in thought, word, and deed. I have contemned Thy majesty and holy laws. I have likewise sinned by omitting what I ought to have done and committing what I ought not. I have rebelled against the light, despising Thy mercies and judgment, and broken my vows and promise. I have neglected the better things. My iniquities are multiplied and my sins are very great. I confess them, O Lord, with shame and sorrow, detestation and loathing and desire to be vile in my own eyes as I have rendered myself vile in Thine. I humbly beseech Thee to be merciful to me in the free pardon of my sins for the sake of Thy dear Son and only Savior Jesus Christ who came to call not the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Thou gavest Thy Son to die for me.” George Washington; from a 24 page authentic handwritten manuscript book dated April 21-23, 1752
William J. Johnson George Washington, the Christian, New York: The Abingdon Press, New York & Cincinnati, 1919, pp. 24-35.

George Washington said, “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and Bible.”

“Yeah, it’s kind of ironic that in many European countries, there is actually a kind of legal binding between the state and the state religion. At the same time, in practice, religion has absolutely nothing to do with everyday life. Maybe the taxes to the church, but that’s it. They don’t have any political power.”

Contradict yourself much? So your interviewer, Margie, agrees that religion had nothing to do with the laws of the United States after you lie by claiming it has nothing to do with European laws, but then you say religious laws are bound to government laws? And if they have nothing to do with every day life, as you love to mention, how does that make it right? Doesn’t that make those who are religious and don’t enforce them, or those who are not Christians or religious who don’t enforce them, but who swore to, hypocrites? Yet just as the Bible says, you promote and approve of evil, you approve of hypocrisy.

Then your intervewier, Margie, replied, “Here it’s called tithing, not taxes.” No idiot, there is no tithing law in government law.

This interview came from “http://www.celebatheists.com/wiki/Linus_Torvalds”

“There are like two golden rules in life. One is ‘Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you.’ For some reason, people associate this with Christianity.” – The San Jose Mercury News profiled him in a piece titled “Linus the Liberator” by David Diamond, 1999

Maybe it’s associated with Christianity because Jesus said that you non-genius?:

Do to others as you would have them do to you. – Luke 6:31

What, you couldn’t at any time in your self-centered personal-opinion-throwing life be bothered to read anything from the most popular book in the world, most popular and most studied and most written about and most widely available book in the most known languages for hundreds of years? You couldn’t even have look up “do unto others” in any search engine Mr. Inventor of the Linux Operating System? Not in one library database? You couldn’t have asked someone, not a single person from any church or any religion Mr. Me Can’t Figure It Out, But I Approve of that Law, Just Not Those Stupid Christians or Christ Whom They Follow For No Good Reason.”

Then Linus said, “I’m not a Christian.”

NO WAY REALLY LINUS? REALLY? I JUST COULD NOT FIGURE THAT OUT BECAUSE THE BIBLE JUST SAYS NOTHING GOOD AND JUST KEEPS WASTING MY TIME.

“I’m agnostic.”

Want an applause non-genius?

“The other rule is ‘Be proud of what you do.’”

Yeah, be proud of being a stupid lazy-minded, truth-hatingm disorganization-loving, and spreading stupidity and deliberate igorance everywhere. Be proud of murdering babies, molesting kids, raping, lying, stealing, murdering, ignoring the truth. Just be proud, cuz, Linus the agnostic said so. Oh wait he modded an already existing operating system that repels and digusts most people who want to have a life.

If “Do to others…” is a “golden” rule to you, and of the two highest, what was your excuse for not finding out it’s origin? What is the excuse of anyone who doesn’t believe in God for not seeking the truth? You are a perfect example, one of millions, as to how the Bible is right about atheists having no excuse for not believing in or obeying God.

Earlier this summer at the Sasquatch Music Festival, someone captured the three minute video I’ve pasted below. One guy dancing to M.I.A. (we love her!) starts what becomes a massive dance mob by the end of the song. The video became an YouTube sensation, with over 2,000,000 views.

Many folks have written interesting posts analyzing the event (here are a few of my favorites) and at some point you’ve gotta stop analyzing and realize this man just needed to DANCE and maybe the rest of us do too. But before we do that, a couple of observations from the place where open source community-building intersects with Sasquatch guy dance mob-building.

Observation #1: Don’t stop dancing too soon

According to some reports, dancing Sasquatch guy had already been dancing for quite a while before someone turned a camera on him. It sometimes takes a while for people to notice what you are doing, so be patient and stay true to your vision while the community is still growing.

Wikipedia has a nice history of open source that shows how the “dancing” started. Early dancers included Richard Stallman, who started the free software movement and the GNU project in 1983. Another key “dancer” was Linus Torvalds, who filled in a missing piece when he began the Linux kernel project in 1992. Red Hat was founded in 1993. The term “open source” wasn’t even coined until 1998– about 15 years after Stallman began the free software movement.

Observation #2: Dance with your earliest supporters

In the video, when the first guy shows up to join dancing Sasquatch guy 20 seconds into the video, the first thing dancing Sasquatch guy does is run up and pat him on the shoulder, then he starts dancing with him. In fact, if you watch closely, you’ll notice guy #2 starts doing a move with his hands, and dancing Sasquatch guy actually starts following his new recruit’s move.

Humbly embracing the ideas of your early community members is certainly a great way to gain their loyalty. Everyone wants their ideas to be heard. A vibrant community will be acting out a shared vision, and a founder often needs to collaborate with his community in order to truly get their support. If he tries too hard to impose his vision, new recruits may be turned off and leave.

Observation #3: Know when to get out of the way

Once guy number three shows up, almost one minute into the video, things start to change. Within seconds, a bunch more people join, and suddenly there is a movement. In fact, you even lose sight of dancing Sasquatch guy in the crowd.

I wonder what dancing Sasquatch guy was feeling at that moment. On one hand, he had created this instant dance party. On the other hand, a lot of the folks running up towards the end of the video don’t seem to have his passion, courage, and unique dancing vision.

The way community leaders handle these situations is fascinating to me. I’ve seen open source community projects where the founding members get very upset when their movement takes off, but then veers away from their original vision. Some community members embrace the progress and feel flattered to see what they’ve begun. Others get upset, start to exert control, and end up killing their movements in the process.

As a community leader, you should always attempt to influence rather than control the community you create. And if you feel like your community members are straying too far from your vision for the movement, well, maybe it’s not your movement anymore.

And when that happens, you have two choices. One, accept the change, and revel in what has been created. Or two, go start a new dance party somewhere else.

Thanks for the tips, dancing Sasquatch guy!

Ovviamente e’ in inglese.

OK. i’m happy with Ubuntu being free. I’m really happy that great effects are achievable

OK. i’m happy with Ubuntu being free. I’m really happy that great effects are achievable through packages such as CompizFusion. But isn’t it about knowing how to get the effects you want — it’s GETTING them and liking them, out of the box.

I think Linux is now in a position to say where it’s going to take free and open-source software-(FOSS) desktop computers with functionality and design in mind. We like the functionality. We love how it can do things and sometimes how Linux does them better. But mostly, the things that attract people to Windows 7 and Mac OS X are those that make people say “WOW! I don’t think I can live without that effect/feature!” Sadly, Linux is more catered to the technically-inclined people. Smart people. Don’t you think those on the other side need to be ’saved’ as well?

Well, yeah. Linus (yeah. We’re friends. First-name basis. ) mentioned how Linux became a bloated “penguin” that it has so much stuff on it now. But I guess that’s what needs to be done if you’re going after the other senses and a larger market.

It’s like buying a car. Two cars. Same engine, same features — ceramic brakes, leather seats, air bags… Both can take you from point A to point B. But you choose the Ferrari Red color ’cause black is boring. Add a SatNav and talking woman. Add great speakers. It weighs the car down but it will sell! And those people smart enough are getting Linux are those that have the hardware and know how to maximize its use buy adding the “SatNav” and the “great speakers” by themselves. I think Linux should put them in immediately and put it in a wonderful showroom so everyone will watch out for it.

I think the same article cited above also sees how ’slim’ Linux is compared to the 2 dominant OSes today. So it’s like comparing RAM requirements of 1998 and 2006. Right now, desktop PCs having Terabytes of space and Gigabytes of RAM, most Linux distributions are pretty slim. And pretty useful. Now, should we let all those resources ‘go to waste’ by just being there? It’s time to use ‘em up. MAXIMIZE them, NOT exploit them.

===

What I’m ultimately targeting with this one are the simple first-time users of PCs. It’s my wish for my grandma to use a Linux PC with no problems. That’s what I’m wishing for the Linux distros. Win 7 and OS X are pretty successful with it. My prayer is for the same to happen on Linux. For older hardware, there already are ‘ultra slim’ Linux distros. So i guess that answers the ‘fatso’ issue with Linux. This post was inspired also by Lifehacker.

TO QUOTE DIRECTLY: “Microsoft tried to torpedo the success of the Japan Linux Symposium by launching their Windows 7 product that same day. They even had setup a big promotion booth across the street from the conference center.
During a break, we decided to make some fun of Microsoft and dragged Linus over there. When we arrived there, Linus was sold immediately on the product as you can see in the picture. At least that’s what the sales guy thought. He obviously had no idea who he was dealing with. But in the end Linus surprisingly did not buy a copy. Wise man! “
