Dead fish are a staple of the comics. They’re often used (along with dead birds) to teach young children valuable lessons about mortality. But it seems to me that Lio is breaking new ground by showing an actual goldfish floating belly-up in a fishbowl. It’s a bracing image that makes the character’s trademark silence seem genuinely affecting. I’ve also been rendered speechless at the loss of a pet. As for the miniature grim reaper that shows up on Lio’s doorstep wielding a small fish scooping device? I think stunned silence is the only remotely appropriate response to that.

Words from an angel’s mouth aka Mike. Shameful…haha. Well another exciting Sunday filled with football (and Dexter) is behind me…thankfully. (Well, not the Dexter part!) I noticed today that the football hand signal for “false start” is the same as the hand signal for “traveling” in basketball. You’d think that the NFL could come up their own original hand gestures. I don’t blame them I guess…people always want to copy cool things. Not that you care (I do, so suffer through it), but here is what I learned today about, “The Answer is how to look fine at 34 Alex.”

Head coach Lionel Hollins said Saturday night that Iverson’s departure was “indefinite.” Owner Michael Heisley said Iverson’s absence has nothing to do with his displeasure about his role on the team.
“I’m not going to get into the personal reason but it has nothing to do with the other stuff,” Heisley told the Commercial Appeal, referring to Iverson’s unhappiness over his sixth man role. “I’m the guy who said he could go. It’s a real family issue that I don’t think should be reported.” “I flew out there to try and calm things down,” Heisley said. “I don’t feel good about losing and that there’s a lot going on in the media. But we need Allen. “He has to make some adjustments. This is something we knew we’d have to address. But Allen leaving has nothing to do with a penalty or Allen being (annoyed). I don’t know what the hell is going on with Iverson but it sounds serious. Just in case it is serious, I would like to pass on the “blessing” that the Mormons offered me in the parking lot today at Ralph’s. Awww, how sweet am I? I sooo deserve to win the lotto now right? 

No se puede decir que soy una mujer celosa o al menos no me considero como tal pero ultimamente noto a Mike raro, muy pensativo y màs despistado de lo normal y comentándolo el otro día con Gaby me hizo ver que igual Mike tenía un lio por ahí. Al principio me reí y le dije a Gaby que eso no era posible, que en mi Mike encontraba todo lo que deseaba pero luego cuando fui a casa empecé a pensar que a veces los hombres son incomprensiblemente estúpidos…

Esa noche después de cenar estaba deseando que se fuese a dormir para poder mirarle el móvil, ya se que no está bien pero hay casos como éste que pienso que es necesario saltarse las normas; pero ¡maldita sea! todo el rato lo llevaba con él a todos lados.

“Mike, amor si estás cansado vete a la cama yo voy ahora y deja aquí los pantalones y todo que asi mañana cuando te levantes no tienes que subir al tercero por ellos”; así podría mirarle el teléfono pero no, se lo quita todo y coge el móvil para llevarlo con él a la habitación; ya me estaba empezando a mosquear tanto llevarlo a todas partes.

Estuve esperando a que se durmiera para quitarle el dichoso aparato, cada vez que me movía para levantarme, él estiraba la mano y me agarraba y vuelta a esperar a que se girara para volver a intentarlo… por un lado ya estaba prefiriendo los cuernos a tanto trabajo que no me dejaba dormir.

Al final lo tenía en mi mano, los nervios me hacian que casi no acertara a darle a las teclas, había bajado a la cocina para que no me sintiera; abro la carpeta de mensajes y veo que tiene 100, me veía toda la noche leyendo….. pero bueno yo solo buscaba los que tuviesen de remitente el nombre de alguna golfa que yo no conociera.

Al final di con lo que queria, una tal Chumeca le habia escrito” hola Mike, te espero en la Galanaview a las 5 para unas sidras”; la mano me temblaba tanto que no podía ni leer; me entraron ganas de correr en ese momento a la habitación, tirarle el movil a la cabeza y pedir explicaciones pero no, tenia que ser más lista, no podía delatarme.

Cuando Mike se levantó yo ya estaba esperando como una loca para poder empezar a hacerle pequeñas insinuaciones, “de qué conoces a Chumeca?”, la verdad que habría qerido ser más sutil pero no pude; ” no se de qué me hablas Susan”; antes de que acabara la frase ya tenía la tostada con mantequilla pegada a la cara.

Fui por el telèfono y se lo puse delante, ” ¡ahora dime que no la conoces, dímelo a la cara!” grité; Mike aunque estaba enfadado por la tostada, empezó a reirse como un loco y  a decirme que era una clienta suya que tenía que darle las llaves de su casa para hacerle unas cosas.

¿Unas cosas? pensé yo, a partir de ahora le tendrìa bajo vigilancia absoluta, si en esta casa alguien tiene que llevar cuernos que sea él, soy de las que pienso que mejor ser la primera en ciertas cosas.

Auteur de bandes-dessinées, comédien de théâtre ou musicien, Baptiste Lalieu, au tournant de l’adolescence, a hésité entre ces trois destins. C’est le théâtre, via le Conservatoire, qu’il a choisi, mais c’est la chanson qui l’occupe maintenant, avec beaucoup de succès.

Commencées en projet parallèle de son groupe de rock My Second Skin, ses chansons en français ont trouvé un écho dont il fut surpris et l’ont mené à publier 2 albums et tourner dans une bonne partie de la francophonie.

Saule était ce vendredi à la mBxl pour une séance de canapé au cours de laquelle il a récapitulé les étapes de sa démarche artistique, raconté ses rencontres marquantes, commenté le panthéon de ses influences et bien sûr assaisonné le tout d’anecdotes irrésistiblement racontées.

Quelques souvenirs en vrac de ce moment inédit…

Comment devient-on chanteur ? C’était la question d’une jeune personne du public (moins de 10 ans !). C’est quelque chose que l’on a en soi depuis l’enfance, raconte Saule, quelque chose qui pousse à l’adolescence à chanter à tue-tête sur la sono du salon poussée à fond, c’est une boule dans la poitrine qu’on travaille sans se décourager, parce que c’est elle qui donne l’énergie.

Comment apprend-on à chanter ? En imitant ! Queen ou Jeff Buckley (“mon prof”) dans le cas de Saule. Et cela me fait penser au slogan de notre magazine la Sélec n°4 « Copier c’est apprendre », développé par Harrisson, et partagé depuis longtemps par la Médiathèque. Convergence !

Viciousness aside, I’m intimidated by the notion of caring for an abominable snowman. I have enough trouble caring for my cat, who is probably the lowest maintenance house-pet imaginable. He sleeps most of the day and only requires intermitent food, water and litter scooping. But a Yeti? I would have to empty out my refrigerator and stuff the beast inside, no mean feat considering its size. Then again, it will be winter soon and if past years are any indication, an abominable snowman would be quite comfortable amid the bone-chilling Chicago temperatures.

It’s taken me a while to get used to text speak. As soon as I became fluent in the intricacies of LOL, I ran smack dab into the sheer insanity of LMAO. When I first encountered this acronym in an e-mail, I had to ask my fiance what it stood for. When she told me it was short for “laughing my ass off,” I felt as if that should have been obvious. Then again, I have a low tolerance for shorthand and try to avoid it at all costs. For a while, I refused to use the phrase 9/11, instead referring to “the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.” But that didn’t last long, and now I fear it’s only a matter of time before the rest of my writing devolves into acronyms.

The queasy notes emanating from Lio’s instrument in panel one suggest that he’s playing some type of classical composition in an excruciatingly sour manner. But my preferred interpretation is that he’s playing a violin version of a classic punk rock song by the Dead Kennedys. Or the wavy lines could denote the manic energy of an early Talking Heads record. That’s the type of music that would infuriate Lio’s teacher even if it was played flawlessly.

The compilation CD I’d bought, it turns out, wasn’t really a great introduction to Falco’s work. It was a slightly odd selection of songs. A mix of singles and album tracks, taken only from the first three albums. A CD compiled not through any appreciation of Falco’s music, but apparently as a product of licensing agreements and contractual loopholes. The cheap looking sleeve should have been a warning, but at this point I was too ignorant to notice details like that.

Around this time (I think it must have been about five years ago), my taste in music had been gradually moving away from the Hi-NRG disco I’d been listening to for a few years and I was becoming more interested in the music of Europe. An idea was slowly forming in my head. I realised that I’d been short changed by the version of pop history I’d been taught at school. The version of history which goes from the birth of rock and roll through the British Invasion to the experimentation of the last years of the Beatles into hippy, then follows Marc Bolan into glam where it gets made self-aware by Bowie and Roxy, eventually becoming bloated and over-elaborate, being energised by punk, stylised by the New Romantics, before growing too big, stadium-sized, irrelevant, only to rescued by the dance scene etc. It’s a well rehearsed history, which forms a simple narrative, but excludes anything which doesn’t fit.

Unfortunately, everything outside of Britain or the US fails to make the cut in this version of history. It’s a shame, because interesting things were happening everywhere, in countries less chauvinistic than our own. As I soon discovered, the fact is that punk happened everywhere. Disco happened everywhere. There were New Romantics everywhere. The eighties happened everywhere, it just didn’t happen at the same time.

Stumbling across this huge hidden history of pop, it seemed a shame not to let other people know about it. So, Now We’ve Got Europe was launched (the club is currently dormant).

The great thing about launching the club was discovering so much new (and old) music. The trouble was that discovering so much new (and old) music at the same time, meant I couldn’t really listen to anything in great depth, so Falco struggled for my attention, alongside Fancy, Amanda Lear, Elli et Jacno, Matia Bazar, Lio, Ivan Cattaneo, Alaska y los Pegamoides and dozens of others.

Last February marked the tenth anniversary of the death of Falco. The club fell on a night just a few days from the anniversary date, so we decided to dedicate the night to his memory. It was then, preparing for that night, that I really listened to Falco for the first time.

I’m a huge fan of geography, so much so that I can spend hours examining the intricacies of a map. I once went into a luggage store and spent an indefensible amount of time playing with their largest and most expensive globe. I walked out without making a purchase. When my long-time girlfriend and I got engaged recently, I spent 10 minutes enlarging and rotating the web-based product image of a globe as we were trying to choose items for our wedding registry. It didn’t make the cut thanks to its pale hue and prohibitive cost. I’m sure I’ll get a globe some day, and when I do I’m equally sure that I’ll whittle away countless hours looking at faraway cities in faraway countries and pretending they’re only a short spin away.

Over the years, many of the comics that I grew up went out of syndication or the content got really terrible. Schultz is dead, Watterson is retired, and Henson is a hack. In recent memory I haven’t had a comic that I looked for in every LA Times newspeaper save for Lio. Lio is a mixture of Dexter from Dextor’s lab coupled with my own child hood where I thought of various sinister ways to kill insects. Enjoy. (btw, I’m really sorry how I’ve been late to post every day this week. It wont happen again (hopefully) as I will try to write most of the posts over the weekend)

En medio de la conmoción internacional que ha provocado el anuncio del compositor y guitarrista Noel Gallagher de que abandona la banda Oasis por diferencias irreconciliables con su hermano, el cantante Liam, su madre Peggy ha salido al paso quitándole hierro al asunto y considerándolo una simple pelea entre hermanos.

En declaraciones al Sunday Mirror, Peggy Gallagher desmiente la imagen de tipo duro que transmite su hijo menor, Liam, cantante del grupo Oasis, y afirma que, pese a las continuas peleas que a lo largo de 18 años de carrera musical han protagonizado ambos, el pequeño de los Gallagher “adora” a Noel.

“Se quieren mucho el uno al otro, pero siempre han sido muy diferentes. Lo divertido de todo esto es que no se peleaban de pequeños. No se peleaban hasta que comenzaron en la banda”, señala la madre de los hermanos Gallagher, cuya banda se convirtió en uno de los emblemas del britpop de los 90 con canciones como ‘Wonderwall’.

“Son dos caracteres muy distintos y creo que cuando estás con alguien 24 horas al día durante 7 días a la semana y tienes dos egos distintos hay oportunidades de chocar de vez en cuando”, ha señalado Peggy Gallagher, quitándole hierro a una pelea que, según testigos presenciales de la escena del viernes 28 de agosto, llegó a las manos.

“Espero que esto no sea el fin de Oasis. No creo que lo sea. Están simplemente cansados al final del tour. Han tenido peleas antes y las han superado”, añade la madre de Noel Gallagher, que la misma noche de la pelea con su hermano mayor comunicó en la página web de Oasis que abandonaba definitivamente el grupo.

En aquel momento, Noel se limitó a afirmar que había llegado al límite con Liam y pidiendo disculpas por los conciertos cancelados en Paris esa misma noche y los siguientes en Alemania e Italia. “Los niveles de intimidación verbal y violenta hacia mí, mi familia, amigos y camaradas se ha convertido en intolerable”, sentenciaba.

Según informaciones de Contact Music, la pelea se desencadenó cuando Liam apareció borracho antes de la actuación en el Rock en Seine de Paris y Noel le acusó de falta de profesionalidad. Pero fue el cantante el que provocó la ira de su hermano mayor cuando insinuó que su hija de nueve años Anais no era suya.

Fueron los Bloc Party los encargados de anunciar al público que la actuación de Oasis había sido cancelada, algo que su cantante hizo no sin cierto humor ácido, señalando que eso les convertía en “cabeza de cartel” y considerando a los hermanos Gallagher “gemelos fruto de una relación endogámica”.

Dinsdag 1 september was het dan zover….Ik moest echt gaan beginnen aan mijn Lio!

Pfff en toen kwam ik er pas achter hoe onzeker en gespannen ik was van de vorige (misgelopen) Lio! Bah was is dat naar als je wakker wordt met buikpijn en denk Oh help… als het nu allemaal maar goed gaat! Ik hoop niet dat het weer zo’n fiasco wordt als vorig jaar! Tja en dat kun je natuurlijk ook weer merken als je voor de klas gaat staan. Er ging een hoop mis, ik ging te lang door met vertellen en uitleggen, terwijl de kleuters allang afgehaakt waren… Mijn instructie voor het werkje was veel te ingewikkeld, en er lag veel te veel spul in de weg op tafel. Daarna de beginnersfout met inschatten hoeveel kinderen tegelijk het werkje kunnen maken. (Dat kun je dus niet met 7 kleuters van groep 1 tegelijk!!!) Ik had het geluk dat de kinderen van groep 2 zich wel redden in de hoeken, want anders was het echt chaos geworden! En noem maar op…. Maar gelukkig voor mij heb ik een super coach die zelfs van deze dag nog positieve dingen wist te noemen!
Een succeservaring voor juf!
Maar dan komt de tweede dag, ik was mijn gespannenheid kwijt en heb een super dag gehad! Ik had nog wel wat puntjes… bij het werkje uitleggen aan groep 2 had iedereen zijn plak- en knipspullen gepakt… En niet alleen M. die ik had gevraagd het voor mij te pakken. Ik liet het liggen, volgende keer dus gelijk laten opruimen, want het ging natuurlijk niet op deze manier… Ze zaten veel te veel met hun schaar of matje te knooien! Wel een super pluspunt: het stappenschema voor het vouwen van de vis! Echt een aanrader, je kunt de kleuters er steeds weer even naar toe sturen om te kijken hoe het ook al weer moest.
En een ander punt: zeg je tegen een (heel jonge) kleuter “ga eens goed zitten”, maar hij weet heel niet hoe dit moet… Oja… das waar ook, hij zit nog maar 2 weken op school… Dus even naar toe lopen en hem voordoen hoe dat moet. Al met al heb ik deze dag wel een geweldige succeservaring opgedaan!
Ik ging na deze dag dan ook met een super gevoel naar huis. Ik heb weer helemaal het gevoel dat ik het wèl kan! En daarnaast heb ik het enorm naar mijn zin met kleuters! Dat ligt mij toch meer dan de hogere groepen.

Nog even een paar leuke quotes…
- “Juf, ik kan je lekker toch niet horen, want ik heb DOOROPPEN in!” (Nadat ik het opruimlied had gezongen)

- We hebben vissen in de klas, een kringgesprek over de vissen en hun verzorging, ik vraag de kinderen: waarvoor zouden die steentjes zijn onderin de kom? Een van mijn kinderen weet daar wel wat op: “Nou die zijn om de kom zwaar te maken, dan kunnen de vissen de kom niet omduwen!”

- Ik vertel dat de vissen in de klas mogen blijven wonen, en dat de kleuters deze mogen gaan verzorgen, het worden dan een beetje onze huisdieren: “Nee hoor juf, dan zijn het klasdieren en geen huisdieren!” En zo weet juf haar plek ook weer…

Voglio raccontare una storia, la mia personale storia. Non ho mai avuto il dono della sintesi soprattutto quando si parla di determinati argomenti, ma cavolo questa storia che mi propone la vita è sintesi della mia stessa vita, e soprattutto sintetizza me.
La storia è questa, è breve e non ha nulla di interessante:
Mare, sole, stato d’animo al top dell’ebrezza: nulla che non andasse, era tutto maledettamente ok.
Scoglio. vedo uno scoglio alto sì, forse, non troppo, non saprei, non ne ho misurato l’altezza; ma era uno scoglio è per me in quel momento era alto, altissimo.
Due. Due i secondi necessari alle mie sinapsi per portare il mio corpo nella direzione di quel “altissimo” scoglio, ripeto due secondi; senza paura.
Due. Due le ore che il mare ha dovuto attendere per potere abbracciare e ricoprire interamente il mio corpo.

Indecisione? Paura? Cosa?

Ieri sera distesa sul mio letto, stanca ma non troppo , mi sono soffermata a pensare a quello che in particolare in questo momento della mia vita mi fa soffrire, le cose che mi fanno arrabbiare, le cose sulle quali focalizzo, o almeno tento di farlo, tutti i miei pensieri. Cavolo, quanto tempo trascorso a leggere articoli di giornale, a cercare di informarsi su quello che accade nel mondo; quanto tempo trascorso nel leggere e nel cercare di interrogarsi sulla mia essenza, quanto tempo trascorso nel cercare di vedere in me qualcosa di Nietzsche, di Hesse, di Dostoevskij; quanto tempo trascorso ad ascoltare musica “impegnata”, quanto tempo passato ad arrabbiarsi delle ingiustizie che mi sono capitate sotto tiro; quanto tempo trascorso a cercare soluzione ai problemi sui quali nessuno mi avrebbe mai interrogato; quanto tempo trascorso nel cercare, cercare disperatamente di sognare. Pensavo ed ero angosciata. A essere causa del mio particolar turbamento il fatto che mi pensavo tra 20 anni a ridere dei miei 20 anni, a ridere di questo vano tentativo di prendere il volo. Mi faceva rabbrividire l’idea chiara e ben delineata in me, che tra 20 anni i miei 20 anni sarebbero diventati esilaranti. Ma come??? Soffro, soffro immensamente; vivo tutte le esperienze con tutte le energie a mia disposizione con tutta la linfa vitale in mia disposizione; faccio quel poco che faccio con la convinzione che possa essere un piccolo passo per cambiare il mondo; tento di amare… e di tutto questo avrei riso, mi sarei fatta una gran bella risata e sarei andata oltre a pensare alle cose veramente importanti. Quella ilarità futura provocava in quel momento soltanto grande angoscia e pianti rimasti inespressi, quella donna che ride di gusto di se, di me mi pare aliena e mi spaventa, mi terrorizza.

E di nuovo faccio i conti con la ruota spezzata che mi limita a ripensare al viaggio, a immaginare come sarà il viaggio futuro, e a starmene qui ferma, ferma ad aspettare.

This strip reminds me of a poem I read as a child wherein a street vendor made his living by selling a variety of less appetizing alternatives to ice cream. These included lice cream, rice cream, and even mice cream. Come to think of it, spice cream would be pretty sickening as well. Consider a big bowl of rocky road topped with parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. The bowl would get even more vile with addition of hot seasonings like curry. It’s enough to make me long for the wonders of plain vanilla.

Is it just me, or do Lio’s eyes seem a little bigger in the final panel? Maybe he’s hearing things from that skull that no living person was meant to hear. Maybe the skull belongs to Yorick from Hamlet and has floated from Denmark all the way to the Atlantic Coast. It may even have bobbed its way through the Great Lakes, depending on where Lio is set. What stories might Yorick have to tell after such a journey? Either harrowing and wondrous tales of life after death or dull anecdotes about plankton. From the rapt look on Lio’s face, I’m willing to bet it’s the former.

One of the records I probably play the most when I’m at home is the “Mutant Disco” compilation from Ze Records. It’s seriously banging, and how could you ever get tired of Kid Creole and the Coconuts, French Boys or Cristina?

I had randomly bought it whilst on a weekend in Florence in 2006 for just 5 euros (also bagged the Mutant Disco ‘Garage Sale’ at the same time) and fuck, it was probably the best value for money ever.

Other than a comic strip here and there, I’d never really read a lot of Lio. I can’t believe how much I’ve been missing out!!! A mischievous litte kid with a penchant for mayhem, monsters and robots???? What more could I ask for?!?!
