Newport, Rhode Island- Beautiful and vibrant in the summer, home to the rich, the famous and site of America’s Gilded Age mansions and families. On our recent visit, I also discovered it is the repository of a great diversity of sculpture, both private, municipal and funerary. I always love returning to my photographic roots, and although I always shoot digitally these days, I delight in restricting myself to shooting exclusively in black and white. There is just something about visual expression in a monochromatic medium that hearkens back to my youth, Pan X, Plus X, Tri X. I miss them all, but I admit, I’m lazy and love shooting in an indiscriminate manner. See the results. Newport in stone and bronze.

Morning Dew, Portreath and Making up the Beds

1 Beautiful dewdrops on the tiny hairy buds of the courgettes. We’re hoping the sun will get them flowering soon. They were planted late after the gales destroyed the earlier planting.

2 Portreath this morning was beautiful – the water turquoise, the sun glorious and lots of colour in the pavement flowers. I have shown you the lion sculpture before but the mosaics were glinting so beautifully in the sun that I had to show you again!

3 We’ve just finished making up the beds for KJ and the Shanticot for the children and the spare room bed for P&V who will be staying here for their last weekend before going to London for two days and returning to Atlanta on Wednesday. It is truly beautiful to have so many people back in our house for the weekend.

Bavarian Bronze

In my numerous adventures scouring the universe for lions , I discovered a Bavarian bronze lion, and was told it was quite rare. This bronze beauty was rather costly, but I’ve never seen another like it. The bronze reminds me of my family: Myself–the daddio lion; my wife at the time, Giselle, and my two daughters, Liseanne and Margo.

So, there before me in a New York City antique shop was this elegant bronze — a beautiful family of lions, holding hands, frolicking with joy. The male lion, with his gorgeous pride is proud as he can be. It’s complete with perfect tails, and a nicely-aged bronze patina.

‘Lion’ Jason Oliva 2011

For a number of years I had thought about how I might be able to create a two-dimensional sculpture based upon one of my sold works on canvas.

In 2010 I completed the painting ‘Lion’..

…and this image in particular seemed to lend itself to a sculpture of this kind. It was around this time that a sculptor named Chris happened to wander into New York Vintners purely by chance: he had been unsure whether NYV was a wine shop or an art gallery so his curiosity got the better of him and in he came. Chris and I got to talking about my needs for an art fabricator and he suggested I meet with a highly respected and skilled fabricator named Karen Atta.

To cut a long story short,

I went and met with Karen at her studio in Chelsea whereATTAINC has been in operation since 1986 and together we began work on my first resin cast sculpture, ‘Lion’.‘Lion’ stands at 13″ tall, 16″ long and 4″ wide at the base. It is cast in resin and weighs approximately 7 lbs. So as to remain true to the original painting, ‘Lion’ uses the same line work and the resin was colored to match, in order to capture the character and vibrancy of the work on canvas.
