“Pyjama donkey”, that was the name given to the zebra in this photo, a descriptive name indeed. Makes you wonder, why did the zebra’s evolved these striking and vivid stripes. With lions prowling around you need to be unseen, yet the zebra species are surviving in the African bush for the last 1.2 million years. The secret lies in the pattern, not the black and white coloration. These unique patterns have been under discussion many times and not one argument has yet been fully proven.

The advantage of the zebra stripes and how it is used to defend the species from predation can be seen in the following photos. Let me show you how these stripes make the zebra unseen to predators, yet visible to the human eye.

Zebra’s may look docile, but they are vicious animals. The stallions kill the young fouls that are not of their bloodline. Many lions bare the scars of zebra retaliation attacks and the kick of a zebra can break the jaw of a hyena. The important thing for the predators is to avoid the stallions and prey on the young and weak. The zebra’s know this and will bundle together while fleeing charging predators. It is while running in herd formations that the stripes make the young zebras unseen to the predator’s eyes.

Predators will always try and attack prey animals from behind. The herbivores of Africa have many defensive mechanisms; this includes sharp hooves, horns and teeth. The predators need to concentrate their efforts on the less dangerous individuals in the herd. This is where the patterns are creating an illusion to the predator’s eyes and the hunters struggle to single out the weak elements in the herd. This illusion effect is enhanced by the fact that the young zebras fouls will always stay in close proximity of the mares and the following photo shows the effectiveness of this unique adaptation.

The zebra species took more or less 500 000 thousand years to evolve this formidable defence mechanism and are still prolific breeders when found in wilderness areas. The patterns give the zebras the ability to hide their weak links in the chain, influencing the predator’s perspective of the herd. The stripes act like a magic cloak under which the future zebra generations can hide. Maybe that is why that young lady on the game drive called them “pyjama donkeys”.

The previous articles in this category I explained the different dynamics involved in a lion hunt. The different adaptations the lions evolved are all used to better the chances of killing large prey animals. We saw the sharp end of the hunt, the soft colouration of the camouflage and the teamwork amongst the lionesses. All theses special and unique adaptations must be kept on a tight lease and what is holding everything together is the tail.

The tail most important purpose is for communication. Hunting lions need to be deathly quite and communication to co-ordinate the hunt are achieved through signals from their tails. The next photo shows a lioness that was stressed because her cubs were to close to a game viewer vehicle. The lioness tail is swishing from side to side and is a clear indication that she is not happy with the closeness of the humans to her cubs.

The most dangerous situation in the African bush is a confrontation with a lioness with young cubs. The lioness will first warn the intruder with a low growl and the sideways movement of her tail. The rule of thumb is that the lioness will rather flee than fight, but if the intruder refuses to back-off; the lioness will prepare herself for a full charge. The tail will be jerked up and down and the charge is immanent.

The tail is also used for a more docile purpose. The lioness when walking through tall grass is almost invisible and the tail acts as a beacon for the cubs to follow. This black tipped tail is also the source of amusement for the cubs and the young lions will spend lots off time attacking this fast-moving appendix.

In the hunt the tail will come in to its own only in the last moment before the killing bite. Most of the prey animals depend on agility and speed to out manoeuvre the lioness. The tail acts like a rudder for the lioness when she has to do sharp turns when chasing light-footed prey. The next photo the reader can see the importance of the tail and how it keeps the lioness upright and on course with the prey animal.

Well, the warthog the lioness was chasing in this photo didn’t make it, there was nowhere to run too and the hunt was successfully completed. It started only minutes ago and the lightning fast happenings give me only seconds to capture these images. I have whiteness countless killings and some times I wonder, why the bloodshed, is there a less violent alternative. The answer lies in the next photo.

The bloody death of the warthog gave the two lion cub’s nutrients’ to survive and to grow into formidable hunting machines. Until the day arrives when these two super cats makes their first kill, they must depend on the lioness that evolved all these adaptations just to secure her own species survival.

We had some very heavy snow for about a week then. The University was closed for many days giving us almost a whole week off to play around in the snow. After having a very warm day inside me and Arron thought lets go out and take some photos. We were out for a good couple hours as it kept coming down around us.

Two lions burgled the enclosure of a rare white tiger at a zoo in the Czech Republic, killing the occupant, BBC News reports.

The big cat blue-on-blue is attributed to the zoo’s peculiar cage rotation policy. Lions and tigers share nocturnal accommodation in the same “pavilion”, and are released into separate open-air enclosures at daybreak.

But for reasons that are not at all clear, the external habitats are assigned to different species on a rota system.

The friendly-fang incident took place when the two lions — Sultan and Elsa — prised open a trap door leading to their previous accommodation, perhaps in an attempt to reclaim their old territory, and surprised Isabella, the new occupant.

Staff rushed to respond to the tigress’ cries for help, but in vain.

Head-scratching zoo director David Nejedlo told the BBC: “The current security system has been in place for 12 years and such an accident has never happened before.”

Fun, fun! After the film we went into town to start a little Christmas shopping, i cannot believe its that time of year already! D: .. not that I’m complaining! But still, I feels like I was enjoying the rays of summer only 2 weeks ago! .. Blimey. But hayho? .. Where was I, oh .. We were in town and brought a new stretcher for my ear 3mm, it hurts like fuuuuckk!!! D’: ..It’s hurting right now, as i sit in media doing fuck all. (: (Well I’m doing reviews on blog sites .. LOL Cha’right ;D) The soundtrack it quite good actually, its surpirsing how I remember which song was used for what scene in the film. I’m so awesome ^^, im hand has cramp again! .. Perhaps people sell cramp-wrist harnesses? D:- If only.
I had the weirdest dream last night! D:
I was in a pet shop with my family, and a couple friends, but the pet shop had a model section, and there was this hulk model under this batman one. And he was laying down on some lab bed in his green hulky form, and he looked really serious. But in the middle of his chest was a button, i obviously pushed it and i made farting noises! D: LOL .. so i kept pushing it, having myself a nice chuckle. I read the side and I was called something like, Whoopsie, there I go again! D: They walked off and my parents and that were like we’re going now, so they went I was gonna go aswell, but then inside one of those heater tank things was my friend Mark! D:< .. Wth? :L :L :L .. and he was sleeping, I go to him, 'Mark?! .. When I die can my funeral have a Lion theme?' He ignored me and proceeded in sleeping. I dont remember anymore, but I was strange. LOL! (: … Anyways I have to go now! Art awaits ¬¬'
Caio! ^^

This dream started out with me on an airplane, and we were just reaching our destination.
Upon our descent, most of the people on the plane started to get airsick (and if you know me, I’m the type of person who can’t STAND to see, hear, smell, etc. ANYone vomiting. It is extremely disturbing to me). Once the plane landed, I rushed off of it to get away from these people.

We had landed in the middle of a wide, open plain. I can’t say for sure, but I’m guessing it was Africa, and you’ll see why in a second.
We were all of the same group, and we began to walk towards the edge of a cliff (which wasn’t too much of a cliff–it had a slope downwards that was fairly steep, but we were still able to climb down it). We were walking, and then we came upon a giraffe. I started yelling at everyone to go AROUND the giraffe rather than near it, because they are actually quite dangerous, but nobody listened to me. The giraffe then proceeded to swing it’s head at people and hit them with its two bony horns (which, I recall from watching National Geographic the other night, is how giraffes fight amongst each other in real life).
In an “I told you so” manner, I began to climb down the slope with a few other people.

Once at the bottom of the slope, we were on a second plain, and then we got into a truck. Most of us were in the bed of the truck, because there wasn’t much room in the cab, of course. as we were driving, a cheetah started to attack us–it was jumping so high that it was above the bed of the truck, and trying to jump into it.
I, for some reason, had some sort of a club or a baseball bat, and I hit it to fend it off, which worked.

A little while later, we got out of the truck, and started walking….and then some male lions started chasing after us.
We ran as fast as we could, and eventually someone saw a beach, and yelled “head towards the water! They’re cats, so they don’t like to swim!!”, and so we did just that…and it actually worked.
The lions didn’t follow us into the water, and after about 5 minutes, they got bored with waiting for us to come out of the water, and wandered off.

In a second part of the dream, I was taking pictures of fiddler crabs on the shore.
Then, it switched to a scene where I was still in this Africa-type place, but I was conducting an interview for the teacher of an elementary school. The interview was being held on the playground of the school, and the person that I was interviewing for the position was messing with a piece of fabric on the sand for some reason….after a few minutes, this all changed–I was the interviewee, and the woman was the one who was interviewing me.
The interview concluded, and at about the same time, a male teacher came up to the interviewers, who were his superiors, and told them that, from now on, he would like to be addressed as Mr. 33702 (or a number similar to this–I know that the first two digits were 3s, but I can’t remember the last 3 digits), which was his zip code. I made a joke that he was definitely not the only one in that zip code, and that there must have been hundreds of other “Mr. 33702″s, but he ignored me.

The dream then changed again, and I was still in this Africa-like area, but this time, I was a senior in high school again. I took a few different artsy classes (which makes sense, since, in real life, I’m a photographer and all-around artist), and in one class, I won a contest where the prize was to pick one of a variety of corsets. I chose one that was all-white, had a lacy pattern, and was very elegant and feminine. Then that class ended, and I ran into a friend (a friend who I actually DO know in real life, but whom I haven’t seen or talked to in a few years, and she just happened to be in the dream), and she was very hysteric, going on about how she thought she might be pregnant. I was telling her that she shouldn’t worry, because the only reason why she thought this was because she was a day late on her period, and she hadn’t even taken a pregnancy test yet, but it didn’t calm her down.

Which was when I woke up.

Hi!

It’s been a crazy week. In honor of it being done here are a few ways I am celebrating right now… well not number three… yet

1. Buying lots of pretty magazines like this October 2009 Australian Vogue (holy shipping delay!), and the new Elle and Elle Canada. I really like Elle, it’s just… grown on me so much. Plus the creative director Joe Zee is a fav and is everywhere all at once. Check out his great NY Diet post and then spend another 2 hours reading about what people eat in New York.

2. Downloading free fonts from Font Fabric and dafont.

3. Buying and popping champagne (aka $12 Spumante Bambino, watch an aweful/hilarious commercial here). Even the cheapest kind is packaged in a way that makes you feel like a million bucks. Gold foil anyone? Image from weheartit.

Tomorrow, themes and props I love in photoshoots: a list! (Next semester has me thinking a lot about it since I will be art directing a shoot for a double page spread (featuring a Ryerson fashion design grad) that has about a 1 in 20 chance at being published in Flare Magazine. I am so excited.

I also want to eat this picture it is so freaking good.

For a long time Deearne has wanted to go to Africa to play with lion cubs for her 40th birthday. Well, the planning is almost complete and come March next year we’ll be doing exactly that.

The plan is to fly from Australia to Johannesburg, where we’ll overnight at the Mondior Concorde Hotel, before flying on to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. From there we transfer by road to the Chobe Safari Lodge in Botswana.

While in Chobe we’ll do game drives and a Chobe River cruise with a view to seeing as many African animals in the wild as possible. However our chances of seeing any big cats here is relatively slim. After a couple of days in Chobe we road transfer back to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe where we’ll stay at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge.

In Victoria falls we have our first lion encounter with an excursion to the Masuwe estate. Here we get to spend an hour-and-a-half walking with two to three lion cubs aged from 3 to 16 months. In addition to the lion encounter we’ve also organised a guided tour of Victoria Falls—the largest curtain of falling water in the world—and a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River to see more animals in the wild.

From Victoria Falls we fly back to Johannesburg and then on to Port Elizabeth, on the south coast of South Africa. There we’ll be staying at the Beach Hotel from where we plan to visit the Seaview Game & Lion Park for our second lion encounter. Here we’re hoping to be able to play with some young lion cubs, and at this stage they should have some 4-month-old cubs around the time we are there.

From Port Elizabeth it’s then back to Johannesburg for another overnight stay before flying on to Mauritius for a week of rest and relaxation at The Sands Resort. So far we don’t have a lot planned for the Mauritius leg of our trip, other than the pool/beach, but we’ll probably take at least one outing to Cascavelle for another lion encounter at Safari Adventures Mauritius.

From Mauritius we then head home on a very long flight via Perth and Melbourne, but no doubt worth it for the experiences we’ll have had.

Then don’t hesitate to check out Nick Bandt’s gallery here!! You can choose the photos you like and just order your print!

To be honest I was never interested in looking at wildlife photographs, because it is always the same old thing. But Nick Bandt changed everything, I actually spent my time looking through photo by photo and it is amazing!
Leo the Lion is my first amigurumi from the book Amigurumi World since I figured out that I was croc

Leo the Lion is my first amigurumi from the book Amigurumi World since I figured out that I was crocheting them inside out. As you see, his head and his bottom are much rounder than my previous animals for this book. I also feel that he was easier to crochet than the elephant or monkey from this book. This is probably due to crocheting him correctly, not inside out, or just the fact that I have made 4 of the patterns in this book, as well as the ones from my other book. I am getting the hang of crocheting amigurumi now. Either way I really enjoyed crocheting Leo and I think he turned out really cute.

The part that I really dislike still is the sewing together of these guys. I love to crochet all their parts but just hate when it is time to put them together. I feel I did better on Leo though than on my other amigurumi’s. First I studied the pictures in the book very carefully, and I saw that the felt parts where not being stitched on with a back stitch as I had tried to do previously. Second, by the end of crocheting, I am excited to put my amigurumi together so I think I rush the sewing together part. So, following the suggestion in the book and the pictures closely and slowing down and taking all the time I needed, I am much more pleased with Leo’s face than his friends. His face is probably better looking just due to the fact that his head is not pointy, or maybe just practice.

His mane was a sources of contention for me though. I crochet really tight. I followed that pattern exactly to make his mane but it fell short around his head due to how tight I crocheted it. I stretched it around to fit, but if I make another lion, I will break the pattern down and see how many stitches to add for more dumps on his mane. I already tried to crochet it looser, but still did not get a nice fitting mane.

So, Leo needs a good home. If anyone would like to provide him with one, please let me know.
