A lip dub is a type of video that combines lip synching and audio dubbing to make a music video. It is made by filming individuals or a group of people lip synching while listening to a song and then dubbing over it in post editing with the original audio of the song.  This one in particular is from a group of students from Quebec and it’s just way cool! The song in question is I’ve got a feeling by Black Eyed Peas. Cool song as well.

My friend Garrett and his classmates are famous! Or at least on their way.

Shorecrest High School students made a “lip-dubs” video for school spirit and it’s wonderful, joyous and funny. One of the school teachers challenged his students to make a video as a class project. 4 other teachers caved to pressure and about 150 student participated in the project.  6 rehearsals and they were ready.  The video was shot in a single 4 minute and 11 second take.

Their cross-town rival school is in the game and a  ”lip-dub” competition is under way in North Seattle.

My friend is the kid in the green sweatshirt and yellow shirt — he powers the wheelchair, and has a few other scenes.

Share it, celebrate and give thanks for teachers who use current tools to teach leadership, collaboration and thinking-out-of-the box.

It all started with the  Connected Venturesvideo… lipdubs! Not just lipsynch on webcam numa numa boy style… but a group of people staging a lipdub all together, that what I call SPIRIT LIPDUBS. And they exist in various forms…

First, Office lipdub, whether they are one-take or not, a couple years ago it really felt like it was the team building activity of the holidays celebration, some were at the initiative of a few employees and some were definitely sponsored by the company management (and professionally set up), as if any company that wanted to be considered a cool company (to recruit or to sell more) had to upload company lipdub on youtube or on their press website… At first as most internet meme it was mostly Internet/Communication companies but it has quickly widened to any type of companies.

 A few examples, sorry most of those are French, but I guess the meme is worldwide

- AOL : this one is the first famous French one/big one done Venture Connected style, and that has been massively shared among online French companies.

- Groupe Beumanoir : a multi-brand clothing company, so its basically a lipdubbed fashion show, its definitely sponsored by the management as a team building event, its perfectly staged, choregraphed, synched.

- Toys R’Us : I think this one particularly good as well : location all the rows of the shop give really good movement and the shop itself provide funny accessorizes, the genuine fun & average Joe style of the participants is heart warming, its prepared but its not staged like the Beaumanoir one, they are both great examples of the 2 different types of company lipdubs.

- zaOza : this one is interesting as its a multi location one, across Paris Berlin Marseille offices, but transition are flawless and you can barely noticed its 3 locations,  you can identify Berlin by all the beers.

- Kia Motors : this one is not a One Take, but its very well edited and synched, and the choice of the song is great for this kind of editing.

- RTL radio group : one of the reason why this one was somewhat famous is because among the employees that participate several are radio host, of the various radios of the group, who are also famous TV show host in France, it would be like having a lipdub with Jay Leno, David Letterman Oprah and others at the same time, at the small French level of course.

- Poulets de Loué : I selected this one for 2 reasons to show that lipdub trend has reached every industry, and to show that from just lip-singing more and more lipdub project try to promote messages as well, here traditional poultry farming (no battery/ only outdoor), the song says “no no nothing has changed, every thing keeps going the same”, the footage is compared current farming with a few old footage of the company, but most of the black & white videos have been shot for the lipdub “old style”.

2/And after company lipdub… University lipdub, if you can build team spirit in a company, just imagine how much you can do with student to show school spirit…

- UQAM – University of Quebec Montreal : A very big hit on youtube with more than 2.5 millions to date as it’s a very good lipdub : a lot of people (172 students), location is perfect for the one take movement, the song is great as it’s the current big hit from Black eyed peas I gotta feeling , staging is professional and creative… at the end of the lipdub you basically just want to go party with them. 1 month of planning for the organizers, 1 day preparation for the students, 2 rehearsals, 2 take, 2d take with no edit…

but the UQAM  lipdub actually comes 3 years after the first HEC Montreal lipdub (though not one take) , and they have produced several since the latest one already quite big in views on youtube and quite well set up one take.

So its to wonder if there is going to be some kind of rivalry for the best university lipdub on Montreal streets? Well considering the list of business schools, universities and even now high schools producing lipdub during orientation week, student board election campaigns or just for the fun of it, the contest for the most viewed university lipdub is definitely on and its with no surprise there is now even websites dedicated to the phenomenon http://universitylipdub.com/

The UQAM lipdub has been so huge, that already a dozen of other I gotta feeling  lipdub have been made in a few weeks. The song is particularly fit and fun for this. Would there be a sub² meme to this sub meme, called I gotta feeling lipdub?

3/ As lipdub are all about showing together our spirit and unity around something it’s not surprising that some took it to the next level: Demonstration Lipdub! Whether it is to claim for changes or show your support and opinions!

- Castres – Mazamet Highway  : Hell we are French we love to have political or labour claims and demonstrate and here the lipdub has been very nicely used to show why and how much south of Tarn region needs a new highway to connect the people, help them grow business, develop their cities without leaving their region. The song Toi  + Moi (You + Me, by an online discovered & produced artist Gregoire) has been rewritten to explain all the benefits expected by getting the highway like any usual demonstration hymn

- Quebec City mayor Regis Labeaume : In Quebec city mayor election was held on 1^st November and following the success of the UQAM lipdub, NRJ Quebec radio and a supporter group of the current mayor created a lipdub during the campaign before the election, also based on the Black eyed peas song but rewritten to list all his achievements and projects for next mandate

It all started back in 1977 with the release of Rock Collection song by Laurent Voulzy, the song tells how everybody have great memories linked to great rock songs, and so the song itself is a medley of famous songs… So a big web 2.0 event has been set up on youtube where the singer invites any group of people to produce a lipdub on one of the rock extract of his original song, and then all those are put together to create a new music video for the Rock Collection song. Well the latest edit is now 19 minutes long and shows many different group of people lipdubbing from primary school classroom to fishmarket traditional companies rugby teams and hair salon…

I think it’s a clever and honest way that this singer found to surf on a meme …

Croyez-moi chers lecteurs, cette photo deviendra réalité!  En effet, je prédis que d’ici 2015, Steven Spielberg remportera un Oscar pour le premier film tourné entièrement en Lip-Dub!  Pour ceux qui ne savent pas ce qu’est le phénomène incontournable du lip dub (ne vous faites surtout pas voir! Des tireurs d’élite vous ont en joue en ce moment même!), il s’agit du 8e art, pur et simple.

Cette technique raffinée où des participants lip-synch les paroles d’une chanson populaire dans un plan séquence a révolutionné le paysage artistique ainsi que notre âme collective.  En effet, qui aurait pensé il y a à peine deux ans que des gens puissent mimer les paroles d’une chanson connue?!  C’était de la pure folie de songer qu’un tel concept soit possible!  DE LA FOLIE, VOUS DIS-JE!!  Mais, dans un élan de brillance, des visionnaires ont tenté le coup et ont atteint l’inatteignable.

Par contre, comme lors de l’arrivée d’arts mineurs tels que la musique ou l’écriture, cette nouvelle ère de lumière amène son lot de réfractaires…  Ainsi, plusieurs affirment que le lip-dub est seulement un exercice dévoué d’originalité qui réussit à envouter les masses sous le couvert du regroupement social.  Certaines langues sales vont même jusqu’à déclarer dans leur statut Facebook de leur “calicer la paix avec vos Lip Dub”.  Ce à quoi je (et tout le reste de la civilisation) répondrai: ALLEZ DONC CHIER, GANG DE MANGEUX DE RHUBARBES, DE PRIMATES IMPUISSANTS, DE NAZIS CANNIBALES!!! LE LIP DUB EST LA MEILLEURE INVENTION DU 21e SIECLE ET VOUS LE SAVEZ TRES BIEN!

Vous êtes seulement jaloux du niveau de préparation que ça prend pour synchroniser 50 personnes à dire une ligne quand la caméra passe devant eux!  Vous êtes jaloux parce que vous ne vous faites pas chanter “Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)” par une douzaine d’étudiantes en droit de l’UDM qui émanent le sexe pur!  Vous êtes jaloux parce qu’en l’an 2250, les chercheurs vont retrouver une foule de lip-dubs et que vos autres précieux concepts originaux seront démodés!

Car le lip dub ne se démodera jamais.  Jamais.

O tema musical do vídeo abaixo é o mesmo de outro post que fiz no registro da nova temporada do programa da Oprah. Neste, um grupo de estudantes canadenses faz um “lip dub”, uma espécie de dublagem ou sincronização de lábios enquanto a música é executada, durante a semana de integração da UQAM (Quebec, Canadá).

Lembra bastante a dinâmica do programa Shop Tour, em que praticamente não há edição.

Peut-être en avez-vous déjà entendu parler sur la toile ; le Sorbonne Post-Scriptum (l’association des étudiants et anciens élèves de l’université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne) compte lancer le premier lip dub de notre université, en partenariat avec le Service Communication de l’université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.

Voici quelques petites explications tirées de leur site afin de vous expliquer le concept : un lip dub est une vidéo diffusée sur Internet (site de l’université, YouTube, Dailymotion…) faite par les étudiants d’une université qui chantent en playback sur une chanson et effectuent une chorégraphie sur le campus de leur université afin de la promouvoir dans leur pays et dans le monde. Phénomène très en vogue à l’étranger, en France, seules les grandes écoles ont tourné des lipdubs connus.

During the “initiation week” at the University of Quebec At Montreal, the Communication Class made a wonderful LipDub. This is one of the best LipDub made so far, if you look at the ones you can watch on YouTube.

What is a Lipdub?

Remember Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk and all the user generated content it triggered. Whether you prefer the Daft Bodies or the Daft Hands – I think their both great – both videos were a huge success. Generating over 40.000.000 views combined – Am I reading this right?! The fact Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger is a compelling track made it perfect for this use.

Lately “I got a Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas has been used on several occasions and this next video will most definitely turn a smile on your face.

The video is a lip-dub video brought by Canadian students at UQAM during their integration week. 172 Communication students participated and it was shot in a single take.

Depois do maior flashmob do mundo, os alunos do curso de comunicação da Universidade do Quebec em Montreal/CA resolveram fazer a própria versão de “I Gotta Feeling”. Mas não é um flashmob, é um lip dub – vídeos onde as pessoas dublam a música – aka. Ganha pão de Britney Spears. O vídeo foi comentado até pela CNN.

The lip dub is a relatively old meme, but one that gets revived from time to time when a new video gains notoriety. The most recent lip dub video to take the internets by storm was filmed by a large group of communications students at UQAM during frosh week. It probably doesn’t hurt that the song they used in their video is inanely easy to sing along to (or lip synch, in this case) and doesn’t seem to be losing popularity any time soon.

What really sets this lip dub apart is the scale of the production. Filming a video in one take is no small feat  and when you factor in 172 people over the course of 5 minutes… well, it’s a logistical nightmare. So it’s pretty impressive that this group of students were able to shoot the video in a little over two hours, without knowing how many people would show up ahead of time.

The history of lip dubs:

The term lip dub was first coined by Jakob Lodwick, the founder of Vimeo, in 2006. He later went on to direct a lip dub of Flagpole Sitta’ in the Connected Ventures office, which includes College Humor, Vimeo, and Busted Tees. This lip dub went on to spark many imitation office lip dubs, and not surprisingly, compelled a lot of people to send in resumes in the hopes of working at Connected Ventures. To date it’s received over 2 million views, making it the best know and most watched lip dub ever.

What makes a good lip dub?

There are a few general rules to follow if you want to make a great lip dub.

• Choose a catchy, well-known song
• Film the video in one take
• Choose an interesting location and take advantage of the space (hallways, stairs, etc)
• Have young, attractive people in the video (this is not necessary if you’re making another form of meme-worthy office video:  the senior management rap video)

Non, on fait un lipdub.

Mon ami consultant en marketing me disait récemment que pour devenir populaire, fallais faire un sextape. Pfff, consultant en marketing mon cul, t’es 2 ans en arrières. Asteur ce qui pogne, c’est les lipdub. Rien d’autre. On a pu rien a foutre de Rémi-Pierre Paquin qui exhibe ses T pis son P devant une C. Rien a foutre de Michelle Richard qui fait caca sur un tapis de chambre d’hôtel. On veux la voir chanter un vieux hit en séquence avec des jeunes de 16 ou encore 172 étudiants de l’UQAM qui font une tune de Black eyed peas.

Parlant de 172 étudiants qui font un plan séquence/lipdub/trucmuche machin chouette complètement débile en voici un vidéo.

Bravo à l’équipe, vous avez une patience que je ne possède vraissemblablement pas.

If this doesn’t put a smile on your face you might want to consider seeking professional help, because something is wrong with you. I just learned about “lip dub” this morning and couldn’t stop watching videos of different groups performing. The best part is they are all foreign people. And one of my favorite things about foreign people is how much they love American pop culture.

Regardless, “lip dub” is the wave of the future and I have been thinking all morning about what song my friends and I are going to sing. More on that later…

The paradox of peer-to-peer marketing is that by adding on to an idea, you often subtract from its pass-along value. The difference between viral and not-so-viral is a matter of split-second simplicity.

This video was part of a fairly successful launch campaign in 2007. And it was achieved at a fraction of what the official TVC probably cost.

But I do think it could’ve been bigger if we had stuck to our guns on filming day. And, of course, if annotations, linking and insights had been available on YouTube then.

To celebrate the start of the ever-brilliant Peep Show’s sixth season on UK TV’s Channel 4 last night, here’s an oldie but goodie lip dub video featuring the show’s theme tune.

The song is Flagpole Sitta by a band called Harvey Danger. They people doing the dancing are from a New York new media company called Connected Ventures and, impressively, the single-shot video was filmed in just one take.
