Dec 16, 2009 SHE was being interviewed for the post of administration and marketing executive when her interviewer pulled her close and kissed her on the lips.

Lim Peng Heng, 36, who told her that he was the boss of the advertising company called Imadgination, also bragged about the size of his penis and his sexual experiences.

On Wednesday, the 36-year-old pleaded guilty in a district court to outraging the modesty of the 25-year-old woman.

His lawyer Edmond Pereira will present arguments on Friday and press for a light sentence.

Lim can be jailed for up to three years, fined and caned.

Last weekend I picked up two new lip balms at Sephora. One, I had some previous experience with; the other, I had been lusting after but was a little freaked out by the $22 price tag (I’ve never spent more than $10 on lip balm ). So how did they compare?

Sugar Rosé Tinted Lip Treatment ($22.50)

I’d read many excellent reviews of this tinted lip balm (er, excuse me, treatment) and finally I decided I had to give it a try. This stuff is awesome – it gives lips a natural-but-better flushed look, some shine, and it moisturizes to boot. Plus, it has SPF 15, and I can use all the SPF I can get, even on my lips. Or should I say especially on my lips – last summer I got a hell of a sunburn when going on a 12 o’clock boat ride with no sunscreen (I know, genius!) and the next day my bottom lip was swollen to Angelina Jolie-like proportions. This may look hot on her, but on me, it looked ridiculous. Especially since only my bottom lip got swollen.
Anyway, the moral of the story is: lip SPF = not so pointless after all.

Korres Lip Butter in Quince ($9.00)

Like I said before, this wasn’t the first Korres Lip Butter I’ve tried – I owned one before that didn’t have any tint. I loved it, and this one is no disappointment. It’s *so* moisturizing, and same as the Sugar Rosé, it adds a little flush to your lips, although this one is more pink. Sadly though, the tint & moisture don’t last as long as they do with SRTLT. After about 3 hours they start to wear off, whereas the Sugar Rosé lasts around 5-6 hours.

Overall: 4/5 for the Sugar Rosé Tinted Lip Treatment (would be 5/5 if it didn’t cost so much!) and 4/5 for the Korres Lip Butter (would be 5/5 if it lasted longer.)

This is what I woke up to yesterday: I love the snow. It’s the only thing that makes the cold seem not-so-bad. Plus, yesterday it meant I got the day off work!

Here we have a young lady who came in to get her tongue pierced.  She had it pierced a couple times before, and it had not worked out for various reasons.  After I pierced her, I asked her what she thought of the way that we did things compared to the other times she had the piercing done.  She happily told me that “this was way better”!

We constantly strive to provide our clients with an experience that is above and beyond what they expect from the typical piercing shop.  Hearing feedback like this helps us know that we are doing things right! 

This is a piece I have been really excited to work on.  It was at the request of a distant friend online.  This material is a very unique variety of petrified wood.  The blue color is not very common, and the rusty browns and oranges really make this a striking piece of jewelry!  Hopefully, now that people have seen what this material looks like worked up into a wearable form, I will get more requests to have pieces made from it!

I’m afraid that’s all I’ve got for today.  I’ve been super busy with the shop and jewelry making, so there hasn’t been a whole lot of picture taking.

Let me start this post by telling you how this came about, because something happened to me that I had never heard of before, nor had any of my friends.  So, in a way, this can kind of be like a public service .  (That’s me, alright!  Dr. Star, educating the public!)

Several years ago, I had to have extensive dental work in order to save my teeth.  It needed to be done relatively quickly, so my dentist and I settled on a plan in which I’d have a four-hour appointment every Friday morning for a couple of months.  In doing this, we accomplished in almost three months what might have taken a year in regular appointments.  But I won’t kid you, four hours of having your mouth stretched, having shots and drilling was grueling, to say the least.  But I had my eye on the end result, so I soldiered on.  One day, toward the end, I woke up to discover a big bubble or blister in the  middle of my bottom lip that hadn’t been there before.  I had no idea what it was, but I didn’t like it.  I asked my dentist, who told me it was a varicose vein!!!  IN MY LIP!!! I was shocked and on the verge of freaking out.  I asked him what I could do about it.  He answered (and I’ll never forget this,) “Well, you’ll probably just have to live with it.  I suppose you could have a surgeon try to fix it, but the scarring could make it worst than when you started.”

So, I had been living with it all this time, but I’ve always been self-conscious about it.  I saw people noticing it and feared the worse.  “Oh my God – she’s got Herpes on her lip!” My female friends told me they thought it was a blister of some sort.  But friends, no blister lives forever, like this baby.  But, what could I do?  A logical part of me advised that I should just name it something  (maybe Maurice?) and go on with my life.  So, that’s what I’ve tried to do.

Then, in September, when I had to have some outpatient surgery, I thought to ask my surgeon about it on one of my post-op visits.  When I asked him if it could be fixed, I was impressed by how confident he was.  He said, “Of course!  I just need to make an incision and cauterize the veins.  I can do it right in my office.”  He then set it up for the day before Thanksgiving.   It didn’t hurt a bit and now, instead of Maurice, I have a big scab that is filled with stitches.  Here is what it looked like BEFORE the surgery.  Maurice is that big bubble in the middle of my bottom lip.

This next shot is the day I had the surgery, AFTER the surgery.

Go ahead!  Call me Octo-Mom!  You know you’re dying to!  Several days after the surgery my lip was still puffy like this. It’s better now.  From a purely objective standpoint, I think the scab with the stitches looks exactly like someone smashed an ant on my lip.  Doesn’t it?  It really does! The stitches are supposed to be self-dissolving, but so far two are left which don’t appear to be going anywhere.  That would be okay except for the fact that the ends of the suture thread are sticking up and I can feel them with my top lip, which is very distracting.  It feels like I have a bunch of whiskers in the middle of my lip!  Yuck!  I read on-line that some people remove their own stitches, but, as much as I love impersonating a doctor, I draw the line at that!  I go back to the doctor tomorrow and he said he’ll remove any stitches that haven’t dissolved, praise the Lord!

Oh, by the way, the surgeon told me that this can be caused by trauma to the lip (as in having your lip stretched for four hours every Friday for like…forever!)  So, whatever you do, don’t let someone grab your lip and pull it halfway across the room.  You, too, might pop a varicose vein!

So, that’s where I stand now.  I plan to write Part 2 when I have a nice smooth bottom lip.  (Said Star, the Eternal Optimist!) If you have a spare prayer handy, I wouldn’t mind you sending one my way that all will go as planned.  I thank you in advance.

“Is that a cleft?” I asked the doctor kneeling next to the tub in which I had just delivered our first son.  “Yes”, she replied.  I looked down into the eyes of my son and saw straight through to his soul.  He spoke to me in that moment; he told me that we were kindred spirits and by that I could know that he would be alright.  In fact, I knew exactly then that he would more than alright; I was in the presence of greatness.

It was clear in that very moment that our lives would never be the same.  It is tempting to believe that I felt this way because of the unexpected cleft lip and palate (incomplete unilateral for those of you for whom this means something – for the rest of you, my next post will be about clefts and will be linked here), or even because, regardless of how deeply maternal/paternal you may be, the birth of a child is a life-altering event.  This was something else entirely: it was because this child’s soul communicated immediately and deeply to mine.  We are warriors, this child and me; we are one.

You may be wondering how warriors became the subject of the initial post on a blog supposedly about children born with clefts.  Allow me to explain.  There are often psychological and emotional components for kids living with cleft.  There are some excellent articles here: http://www.ijoms.com/home.   Kids growing up with facial anomalies have some extra challenges beyond the usual “Is my hair too thin, my nose too big, my ears too sticky-outy…”.  Although they are often aware of any differences early on, between 1st and 2nd grade kids’ awareness and sensitivity surrounding their appearance becomes heightened.

For us, our son’s emotional response to his cleft manifested as the exhibition of “defended” behavior that began around age 2 1/2.  His preschool wasn’t sure how to deal with him, although that was as much a function of an incompetent director as our son’ behavior.  I don’t mean to slander; this opinion is based not only on my own observations and interactions, but also my experience as a board member for the school during this time.  Regardless, he has never been aggressive or violent; he simply marches to the beat of his own drum.  When he respects the authority figure, he’ll do anything that’s asked of him.  When he perceives the request as bunk he is much less likely to willingly comply.  I recall being on the way home from school one day and having a discussion surrounding the need for him to listen to his teacher, even when he thought the request unnecessary.   His response to me was, “Mama, I like to listen to myself”.  He knew exactly who he was, even then at the ripe old age of 2 1/2.

As you probably have noticed by now embarrassing moments stalk my every movement.  A gastric gurgle let loose during a important meeting brought on by an empty stomach because I skipped breakfast that morning.  Letting racial slur slip which I had no idea was a racial slur in a first place.  Publicly embarrassing myself in front of a room full…no a store full of strangers by walking in through the exit door (which dosn’t open that way) smacking face first into the Plexiglas.

Yep. Those moments that cause me to turn bright red with shame, and a side helping of humiliation, are waiting around every corner along the path of life.  Last night was one more corner I had to round.

It all started when I was eating my lunch.  Was about 90% finished with a jello snack cup (Orange, my favorite) when I spilled the last heaping spoon full onto the table.  Don’t cry for me Argentina because by some lucky break the mount of giggly gelatin landed on the foil lid.  And being the plumpy hungry being I am I looked around to take a peek I was alone.  Then I slurped the last spoon full off the foil lid.

But this last sinful bit was not without it consequences.  In my haste to slurp up the last remaining Jello I was reckless with the foil.  I sliced the left corner of my mouth on the metal lid.  Luckily it wasn’t that bad.  Hurt like hell but didn’t bleed much.  Ashamed to admit it but this isn’t the first time I’ve cut myself on a jello cup lid.  This incident was fairly mild compare to the lip gusher of the summer of 89′ but that’s story for another time.

The rest of the afternoon it felt as if the corner of my mouth as sunburned and chapped at the same time.  I tried to use some lip balm but that just burned.  They really need a warning on those.  “Do not use on broken skin caused from licking a foil jello cup lid.”

At the end of the day I was making my way down the stairs the opened up to the lobby so I could leave.  While talking down the stairs I was alone and in full out licking my wound mode.  Had my tongue out as far as it would go and lapping the side of my face to relive the stinging sensation caused from my noontime battle damage.

Try it.  Stick your tongue out all the way and lick the corner of your mouth as far to the left as you can go.  Feel stupid right?

Now imagine my fright and red embarrassment when I looked up walking down the stairs and there was a lobby full of people waiting.  Not sure why they were waiting, perhaps to be interviewed or to talk about a charity on air, but they were there.  About six women waiting patently as I walked down the stairs, tongue out, appearing to try and devour my face via licking.  My body froze….yet my tongue keep licking.  Dammit it tongue!  Stop!   Once I snapped back and made peace with how stupid I must have looked I put my head down pretending to be reading a text message on my cell while walking that awkward walk out the building.

I think in the future I’ll just pack a few extra jello cups per lunch so I don’t have to scrounge to get every last bit out of one.

One of the absolute banes of my life happens to be dry lips. With working in an office that has air conditioning plus the hot sun of New Zealand, I find myself licking my lips only to find them a little cracked.

Lipstick does nothing by colour in the dry patches and accentuate them. Lip gloss makes them feel sticky and inevitably worse. Lip balms are okkkaaayyyyyyyyy… But tend to not really moisturize those poor little lips.

After whining about this problem for quite a while, one of my friends (We’ll call her Essy) introduced me to Lucas Paw Paw ointment. It’s available in a small tube and also in pots, and is used for everything from rashes, cuts, dry skin to – you guessed it – extremely chapped lips. 

Created by a botanist over 100 years ago, this is one of those old-school remedies that you might have seen your Nan use at one time. It is gentle, nourishing, and makes your sore lips (Or any skin ailments!) feel better and heal super fast. Many of my friends followed suit and bought some (Available from most chemists for about NZD$13.00) only to find their lips never felt better!
