Tetley is one of the most popular upmarket tea brands in Poland. Its main competitors are: Unilever

Tetley is one of the most popular upmarket tea brands in Poland. Its main competitors are: Unilever’s Lipton brand and Dilmah. I’ve always been a great fan of Tetley’s Earl Grey tea-bags and I also enjoyed the advertising that Tetley had in Poland a couple of years ago. PZL, a top Polish advertising agency, held the Tetley account at the time and created these beautiful TV spots with the slogan: Tetley. The Essence of England.

In the above spot called “kite” the voice-over says: The English are tied up to the taste of Tetley tea.

In the below spot called “ride” the voice-over says: According to the English, life revolves around tea.

The key visuals from those TV commercials were also employed in Tetley’s sales promotion – special Tetley mugs were attached to bigger packages of Tetley tea. Well, I bought two of them just to get hold of these mugs

The third commercial called “clipper” introduced Tetley Earl Grey Strong with the slogan: The full power of flavour.

The last in the string of PZL’s commercials for Tetley promoted a new variant called Tetley Strong. In a humorous manner the spot depicts how the Tetley Strong’ tea-bag outpowers the proud English gentleman who is trying to impress the ladies with his stories of conquering the North Pole.

Advertising Agency: PZL, Warsaw (Poland)

and pray to the lord above
our father who art in heaven
hallowed be thy name

YA GOTTA HAVE A GIMMICK: Thanks to Ashton Kutcher for sending me (and maybe a million others) news of that new iPhone app that lets you start your car from your phone. I would start saving up for it but I’m saving up for a new TV set instead. No, not HD – 3D. Yup, Panasonic unveiled its prototype 50-inch Viera plasma 3-D set in Tokyo this week. Apparently it’s a wow. The technology works by rapidly alternating between left and right frames of the video. Viewers wear glasses that sync with the television over an infrared signal. The right frame is seen only with the right eye and the left frame with the left eye, creating the illusion of depth.

So all they have to do now is persuade producers to make reality TV shows in 3-D, and we’ll have even more reasons to go back to the movies.

Have a great weekend!

The answer to that is – both. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) aims are to please the company’s

The answer to that is – both.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) aims are to please the company’s stakeholders, improve its branding on a wider level and ultimately make more money, all via adhering to ethical/value based behaviours that are arguably beneficial to specific or broader societies.

All great and good if it benefits us while still making the companies a tidy sum. No problem at all. What a fantastic way to do business, dare I say, revolutionary?

It is revolutionary in the sense that the traditional ‘bottom line’ approach is now becoming the ‘triple bottom line’, where a sole fiscal focus has been replaced by a combined social, environmental and economic goal for the company.

You can’t argue with that, right?

To put it simply, yes and no.

It is a positive shift in the way business is done because corporations are now also recognizing that ethical behaviour will lead to more profit.

Many companies are trying to become more socially responsible, just look at most corporate websites and you will see their CSR campaigns prominently displayed.

Australia is ranked 9th in the world for the Responsible Competitiveness Index (2007), not bad.

'Responsible Competitiveness Index Rankings 2007' © AccountAbility 2007

However this conjures up mixed feelings as you become more aware that corporate social responsibility may also be (mis)used as public relations spin.

Multinationals such as Lipton, McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Shell and numerous others have CSR campaigns that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside initially, then following further investigation the blanket is pulled off and you’re left feeling cold and cynical.

For example, McDonalds CSR campaign is extensive and delivers page after page explaining how they put the values that they purport into practice.

In particular in their ‘Employment Experience’ section, they categorically state,

‘We respect the right of employees to associate or not to associate with any group, as permitted by and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.’

Yet McDonalds has had a very long and dodgy history with unionized labour.

Their advertising was ruled in court (in the infamous McLibel case 1997) to be exploitative to children, their food causes obesity and other health related problems and their commitment to keeping the minimum wage – at a minimum – is truly abhorrent.

Coca-Cola also has an extensive CSR campaign with a section titled ‘Global Workplace Rights Policy’ which states that their employees have the right to associate with unions.

However many (450 so far) unionists have been murdered in Colombia. More recently, one union leader was murdered and several others unionists tortured at their bottling plant.

In August this year, a U.S. court dismissed the case against Coca-Cola due to lack of evidence.

Here is a trailer for a forthcoming documentary on the issue:

(source: nfb and National Film Board of Canada):

Lipton Tea CSR claims to provide housing, education, health, etc. for their employees in the developing world. Yet they fail to mention that these benefits only apply to a small percentage of their workforce who are employed full time.

In Pakistan for instance, Lipton employs the majority of their workforce on a casual basis – these workers do not receive any benefits (including sick leave) or job security.

It is PR spin at its worst.

See for yourself.

(source: iufasia)

I could go on and on – but I think you get my point here.

Ok, the world is not perfect – agreed.

We do need to understand CSR for what it is. It can be beneficial for both the company and society.

However it is also imperative that we continue to have a healthy amount of scepticism for CSR and an increasing awareness of the company’s actual behaviour.

Ensuring companies are held accountable when they falter in their CSR commitments remains all important.

This is where people and the internet can act as watchdog’s and make an enormous difference in keeping this revolution an honest one.

This may seem like a bizarre recommendation, but this is in the vending machine downstairs in the building that I am in, so I get it a lot. This is sort of a hard taste to pinpoint. While you are drinking it, you don’t really taste how sweet it is. It has a mellow taste as it’s going down, so that it’s smooth, you know? You can drink it without being annoyed by it.

Then, once you’re done sipping at it, you start to taste exactly how sweet it is. But I wouldn’t characterize it as a sudden rush of taste; rather, I would say that it’s a gradual progression of sweetness that just happens to occur extremely quickly. Those two things may seem the same, but they’re not. Finally, when you think that it can’t get any better, the raspberry flavoring comes in like Batman who, while he was there all along, watching you get manhandled by the Joker’s goons, finally decides it’s time to strike and swoops down and turns the scene from an armed robbery to a daring rescue. That’s what the raspberry does; it changes the drink from mellow tea that happens to be a little bit sweet into an unbelievable raspberry drink.

Somehow it manages to fight cottonmouth and make your mouth dry. But then when you’re done drinking it, your mouth isn’t dry any more. I think the dryness just comes from the knowledge that this delicious drink is right there and you can have some more, but for some reason you aren’t. So, naturally, the dryness is really just a craving that you feel in your mouth, around the sides of your cheeks. But once it’s all done, you don’t feel the craving anymore, and you are really quite satisfied. The cottonmouth is gone and you can just chill out. It also leaves remnants of its flavor, so you can remember how great it was.

By the way, even though it looks like it’s healthy (“It’s TEA dude!”), it’s not. So don’t be thinking that you can just drink a lot of this instead of coke and everything will be all right. It won’t be.

A new pizzeria Pizza East opened in a trendy Shoreditch area, at the corner of Shoreditch High Street and Bethnal Green Road – very close from Albion Cafe I wrote before. Pizza East is situated on the ground floor of Tea Building, former Lipton Tea Warehouse. The interior makes the most of the features of the former industrial building, such as concrete walls and exposed beams, pipes and pillars, with contemporary touches and retro atmosphere. The pizzeria boasts the capacity of up to 170 guests on its vast space. There is also to-go (coming December 2009) and deli counter service where ingredients, accompaniments and accessories used in the restaurant are for sale. Opening all day from noon until midnight (Sunday until 11 pm) 7 days a week is a big plus in London, where most of the decent restaurants close at 11 pm.

Their pizza was fresh and crispy, while around the puffed-up edges was soft and chewy. According to the Time Out review, there’s some Italian-American influence on many of the dishes, such as New England specialty pizza with clams, because the owner of the pizzeria Soho House has a branch in New York. There are a loads of antipasti (appetizers), salads, mains, and deserts, so you will be fine even if you don’t feel for pizza. M’s green salad was rather big as the reasonable price of £4, with celery and broccoli on a mountain of mix leaves, but according to M, the taste was not bad. Warm Fig Cornmeal Cake with ice cream, our desert, was delicious as well.

Pizza East is the place where I want to go on a sunny day and relax with the sunshine coming through the large windows.

“Oh,” said Jonas, although the word ended in a different time zone than it began in. Heather shrugge

“Oh,” said Jonas, although the word ended in a different time zone than it began in.

Heather shrugged in response. She was the cause of this deflated outburst, or at least her attire was, but she didn’t feel that guilt was necessary. She had come in costume, as was customary for a Halloween party, and she’d obviously put in more effort than most, particularly the four slightly post-college men who each had purchased a costume that for licensing purposes had to be marketed as a “Eurasian Traveler.”

Heather had made her own costume. And while it wasn’t particularly skillfully made, it was recognizable, at least by the person it was directed at.

In honor of the protest movement that her mother had joined, Heather was dressed as a teabag.

She had added “I’m with stupid” in red nail polish where “Lipton” would normally go. Before the party, she waited on the couch for her mother to see. Mrs. Dupont involuntarily noticed her daughter and her rare pilgrimage outside her bedroom before remembering that she had nothing to say and dramatically ignoring her. Heather’s unusual dress demanded a second glance, which Mrs. Dupont did grant. She even shook her head at it and rushed into the kitchen. It was the closest thing to words that Heather and her mother had exchanged in four months.

To Jonas, Heather affected a phony Southern Belle accent and declared, “I know it’s not very good. My girl was just turned into a zombie.”

Jonas chuckled and thrust some Smarties into Heather’s hand, which she playfully threw back at him.

In fact, the simple explanation was that the costume was beyond Heather’s skill level. Her experience in sewing was limited to about two weeks in junior high home ec. She was aware that sewing machines existed, and had even used one once, but that didn’t mean that she was comfortable setting it up herself. (Let alone using her mother’s machine, or even rummaging through a closet to find it.) So Heather had bought some white gauzy fabric and attempted to stitch it together by hand.

Cutting was ludicrous; the fabric stretched and was far too large for her to hold and even though she simplified by dispensing with niceties like sleeves, the edges were still as jagged as a werewolf bite. She tried sewing the sheer rectangles together by hand. That attempt lasted half an hour and a total of five stitches.

The next day, Heather bought some strips of Velcro. She chose black, because they were marginally cheaper than the white, and using them made front and back pouches to hold the curled black construction paper that served as tea. Then more Velcro connected the two pouches into something that technically hung on Heather’s frame.

By the time she arrived at the party, the joints were already strained. In the act of tossing candy, she managed to catch the side of her bag on the doorknob, spilling the contents across the floor.

She shrugged and pulled off the entire costume, stuffing it into Jonas’s trick-or-treat bowl. Any kids who want candy, well, they can work for it.

*****

I’m calling this part of Clean Hippie Murders, since it features Heather Dupont, who is if not co-protagonist at least a high-level sidekick. Realistically, however, I doubt that teabagging (in a protest sense) will be relevant by the time it could conceivably be published. So just consider this non-canonical back story.

The inspiration is pretty directly from my life; I am going as a teabag this year (probably without “I’m with stupid,” but who knows) and construction is not going so well. But what can you do?

I have an addiction. Well, actually, I have many. But the addiction I am talking about now is my add

I have an addiction. Well, actually, I have many. But the addiction I am talking about now is my addiction of tea. It’s not like I drink it all the time, I am actually more addicted to coffee. But I can not go into a store without checking out the tea isle.
If I see a new type I haven’t tried, I have to buy it. The most recent types I bought were Lipton Indian Chai Tea and Twinings Green Tea & Cranberry.
My collection as of today consists of the two I mentioned, plus: Twinings Earl Grey Green Tea, Ricola Herb Tea, Confecta kamomille te, Confecta Nype te, London Fruit & Herb Company tea (Strawberry & Vanilla Fool, Apple & Cinnamon Twist and Raspberry Rendezvous), Lipton Camomille Tea, Lipton Thè Vert Green Tea and Lipton Blue Fruit Tea !

I drink mostly camomile and green tea. Blue Fruit is best for when I want something sweet. I LOVE the green tea & cranberry kind, because I love cranberry juice, and you cant get cranberry juice in this country without paying a fortune for it. So this tea allows me to enjoy both green tea, and cranberry. Obviously. And how wonderful life is, when you can mix the things you love

I don’t know if you guys heard but today was all about the balloon boy! When I first saw the title I

I don’t know if you guys heard but today was all about the balloon boy! When I first saw the title I was like oooh a real life “UP” maybe? Ahh that would be so cool! Finally, I would be able to travel around the globe in the cheapest way possible. Okay so it might be a little risky, scary, and perhaps a little too adventurous, hmm…yeah I can see being attacked by birds especially Hitchcock’s “Birds” they were all so creepy, and there is the whole thing with coming into a plane’s way but hey let’s not go there, yikes and what if all the balloons popped!? I mean are helium balloons really durable? And of course am I really qualified as a grumpy old person yet? But then does it really matter? At least they take you up, up and away and you don’t have to worry about checking in or paying fees for your luggage, see what I’m saying (taking a sip of my hot beverage) Ahhh…lovely! Ok so how did I get here, YES! The balloon boy!

So after all that serious thinking I actually read the article and saw the picture of the runaway balloon. Two things, one the balloon boy is really not a balloon boy because guess what? He never even got on the balloon! Whaaat!? Yeah, that’s what I said! He was actually just hiding in the attic because his father had yelled at him earlier. It was his older brother who told the dad that “Falcon” that’s the kids name might have taken a flight! And you can imagine the rest of the horror! But fortunately little Falcon is just fine. And second, this is no “UP” kind of balloon ride! I was so disappointed to see a gray flying saucer looking balloon instead. Really? What is this? Man, I was really hoping to see thousands of colorful balloons with an attached house floating around.

Anyways the good news is little Falcon is out of hiding and his father will try never to yell at him again. Unfortunately on the other hand people are now debating whether or not this whole thing was real or a hoax? I don’t know and I don’t care! But in case you want to hear the whole interview, check out not the balloon boy and his family in an interview in the following link.

http://www.hulu.com/watch/102720/nbc-today-show-was-it-a-stunt-balloon-boy%E2%80%99s-family-speaks-out

My tea for the moment: Lipton’s Decaffeinated Black Tea. Try it with some milk and sugar or without with a touch of mint. Either way it’s a great black tea for such a brrrr…cold weather!
